A-ROSA Kitzbühel sees itself as a location where visitors can afford the “luxury” of being able to do what they want without actually having to do anything. We offer them the space and time they need for things which are often neglected in busy day-to-day life: a fun day on the ski slopes, a relaxing spa session or simply a lively conversation over a good meal. All guests have their own definition of luxury, and it is very important to us to meet these individual demands. I am convinced that all of the nominees for the World Ski Awards have similar standards. I would like to wish you all the best and I hope you have an unforgettable time at A-ROSA in SK I A D Kitzbühel.

Welcome to Kitzbühel! We are honoured that the World Travel Awards, “The Oscars of the Tourism Industry”, are celebrating their 20th anniversary in Kitzbühel and will, on this occasion, be holding the 1st World Ski Awards. Great things start with a dream and the realisation of a dream requires a lot of courage, skill and effort. Franz Reisch is a great example of this. In March 1893, Franz Reisch turned his dream into reality when he completed the first successful alpine ski run in Austria and the joy and enthusiasm from this astonishing feat is what led to the first ski races being held in the winter of 1894/95. Kitzbühel was, and still is, the home of many legends and it has produced a number of winners and sporting heroes, year after year. As a result, Kitzbühel is the perfect stage for hosting sporting events and the place for making history. When it comes to nominations, awards, famous names, and podium finishes, Kitzbühel has over 80 years of experience. The most spectacular World Cup downhill Ski race has taken place on the legendary Hahnenkamm since 1931 and the Hahnenkamm downhill is the race that every professional skier wants to win. With a maximum slope gradient of 85 percent, 80-metre-jumps and 140 km/h top speed, the course layout generates action, excitement and an incredible tension and drama that neither the 85,000 spectators, nor the 500 million television viewers worldwide, can escape. The Kitzbühel ski area attracts visitors from all over the world and the network of 51 cable cars and lifts elevates our guests to the highest points at 2,000 metres, providing breathtaking views of the record breaking 200 km2 area that the Kitzbühel Mountains cover. The 170 km of prepared slopes, an additional 32 km of ski trails, plus a unique microclimate that guarantees absolute snow security are just some of the things that make the Kitzbühel ski area one of the most popular ski resorts in the world. Kitzbühel wishes you a pleasant stay in the most legendary city of sports in the Alps and we hope that you take many unforgettable memories back home with you! Gerhard Walter Managing Director, Kitzbühel Tourism Board

With the Sochi Winter Olympic Games just around the corner, winter sports are set to be big business during the 2013/2014 season. But it is not just Russia which is set to benefit from the increased exposure over the next few months, with Breaking Travel News here bringing you all you need to know about the industry.

Next February the Black Sea Resort of Sochi will welcome leading athletes to the XXII Winter Olympiad, offering two weeks of international exposure to the already booming leisure market. Destinations across Europe, North America and Asia are set to see an influx of visitors, with everybody from those taking to the slopes for the first time to returning pros strapping on their skis. There are approximately 70 countries in the world where skiing is possible, with nearly 2,000 ski resorts opening to the public each year. Besides the major destinations - in Alpine Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan

- there are a number of other, smaller, destinations where skiing is developing quickly. Most obviously these include Eastern Europe and China, but there are a number of other small players, spread out across the globe, including: Algeria; Cyprus; Greece; India; Iran; Israel; Lebanon; Lesotho; Morocco; New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Turkey and many more. The industry currently offers about six million commercial beds in the mountains, the majority of which are concentrated in the larger, industrialised ski markets mentioned above.

the industry may be hit by weather conditions, it is estimated there are between 500 and 600 million ski holidays taken around the world each year. Nearly half of all skiers visit the Alps each year, with La Plagne, SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser, Les Arcs, CourchevelMĂŠribel-Mottaret and KitzbĂźhel drawing the biggest crowds. North America drew a further 20 per cent of all skiers during the 2012/13 season, with numbers falling in Asia & Pacific. Here continuous decline of the industry in Japan has still not been replaced by the growing ski markets in South Korea and China.

KitzSki calling!

Larger ski areas attract the most skiers, and as a result individual resorts in Europe are creating new alliances. Last year we saw the potentially lucrative marriage of Alpbach in the Austrian Tirol to Auffach in the neighbouring WildschÜnau valley. This year the tiny Warth-SchrÜcken in the Austrian Vorarlberg has joined up with more famous Lech and now offers a total 190 kilometres of pistes, enough to attract skiers from across Europe. Here in Switzerland, Arosa and Lenzerheide have linked to create one of the largest ski areas, with 225 kilometres of slopes, while Bruson is now part of Verbier and the Four Valleys ski area, with a new gondola running from Le Châble to Les Mayens de Bruson. A new ski area is opening on the Piz Val Gronda in Ischgl, served by a cable car called the Piz Val Gronda E5, while the lower Tignes satellite of Les Boisses reopens after

redevelopment as Tignes1800. The latter features the four-star luxury MGM-built Kalinda Village and offers a quieter alternative to the hustle and bustle of Tignes. Roughly 200 million skiers take breaks each year, with the number growing over the long-term. Most of these holidaymakers originate in Europe and North America, but this is changing over time. The United States, Japan and France have the most ski resorts, with more than 200 each. Germany has a similar number, but the majority are quite small. Only Austria and France have more than ten resorts that generate over one million skier visits per season. France, Austria and the United States top the list of countries with the most lifts, with about 3,000 each. They are also the

countries posting the highest total skier visit figures, with more than 50 million each, and the United States ranks first on a five year average. However, France is close behind and may soon be near or at the same level. South Korean provides a new record breaking figure as far as skier visits produced per lift is concerned, with 43,982 skier visits generated per lift per season. The number of skier visits per lift is also higher in Canada and the United States than in the other countries, showing the difference in the business model from that in Europe, where an emphasis is placed on lift mechanics and sophisticated infrastructure. With more than 1,300 million inhabitants, the biggest national market is China. However, at this stage, the size of the ski industry is not proportional.

Guest Editorial

India, which also has over one billion inhabitants, still has a very low number of skiers. The United States is the biggest mature market, with a population of over 300 million inhabitants. The Austrians, Swiss and Norwegians are the populations with the highest participation rates, with a quarter or more of the population participating in skiing. However, since they benefit from much large populations, the United States, Germany and France account for the highest number of national skiers, with around 12 million each. Despite these positive numbers the industry is facing the challenge of generating long term growth. In many places, the market is more than mature. The baby-boomers represent the majority of participants and this generation will progressively exit some of the mature markets without being adequately replaced by future generations with the same enthusiasm for skiing. The need to stimulate the market is extremely important and not always sufficiently addressed.
