In figures scarcely believable just a few years ago, the global spa and wellness industry grew to be worth an estimated $3.6 trillion in 2014, according to figures from STI International. And there is more to come.
With a growing middle class in China leading the way, global markets can only see growth in the coming years. Coupled to an ever greater understanding of the benefits of wellness travel, and the future looks bright for the sector.

Nutrition and weight loss, preventative and personalised health, complementary and alternative medicine, and beauty and anti-aging treatments have all been among the biggest growth sectors, while ‘mindful living’ – the idea that action should clear clutter in the mind – has also drawn converts toward the spa sector.

This has led to tremendous excitement in the global hotel community, which is well poised to capitalise on the new trend. entiator to deeper, more multi-faceted programming, making the spa experience central a stay. The global spa industry generated $94 billion last year, according to the Global Spa & Wellness Economy Monitor Report, up from $60 billion in 2007. With more than 32,000 spas, Europe had the highest revenue of $29.8 billion, followed by the Asia-Pacific region with $18.8 billion and North America with $18.3 billion. Emerging markets in the Middle East and Africa have been growing the fastest in terms of adding spas. In Asia, China and India are leading growth, while in Europe it is Eastern Europe, Russia and the Baltic states. Strong growth in the sector is also coming from emerging markets such as Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and Turkey. Morocco has also seen wellness tourism trips more than double in 2013. Thermal/mineral springs generated $50 billion worldwide but the biggest industry sector was wellness tourism, or travel associated with maintaining or enhancing one’s personal well-being and health, which accounted for $494 billion. “Wellness travel is a very fast growing segment within travel. That’s because as people become more conscious about a healthy lifestyle they naturally want to extend that when they travel,” Yeung explained. The report showed that the number of people taking international and domestic wellness tourism trips grew by 12 per cent from 2012 to 2013. That was 36 per cent faster than overall tourism trip growth, which is estimated at nine percent.

coastal regions make natural homes for spa resorts with notable developments including the Ho Tram Strip project in the south of the country, which will accommodate five different resorts with spa offerings upon its completion in 2020. With the influx of spas to the country, plans are afoot for Vietnam’s first spa association, with membership slated to be open to facilities across the country. The new association intends to focus on international standards, training and collaboration, with a proposed spa school expected to follow.
STABILITY The political situation in Vietnam has also played a role. After decades of turmoil, Vietnam is quickly being discovered in the spa and wellness world. Guests can now revel in treatments inspired by loyal techniques and those passed down from generations, as well as those that honour nature. On offer is a chance to improve circulation with restful bathing ceremonies or to stimulate energy flow with massage services using pressure-point techniques. When not pursuing wellness, visitors to Vietnam can take pleasure in this home-
land made up of heavenly beaches, rice paddies and villages dotted with ancient historic citadels against stately forest and mountain backdrops.
OPPORTUNITY Despite this growth, wellness is still a relatively new concept in Vietnam and is currently limited to the luxury end of the market. This means properties like Six Senses Ninh Van Bay, Fusion Maia Danang and InterContinentalŽ Danang Sun Peninsula Resort tend to dominate. While the coastal regions are a natural choice for spa and wellness resorts, there are also other ideal locations to develop wellness. Highland locations such as Dalat and Sapa are perfect for their beautiful natural scenery, fresh air and mild climate. Vietnam’s numerous mineral hot spring locations could also be tapped into for wellness development. Existing properties interested in re-branding can start with something as simple as incorporating healthy foods to expanding spa services to include lifestyle consultation or Vietnamese Traditional Medicine in their service offerings.

One of the major port cities of Vietnam, Danang is the largest city on the south central coast of the country; situated on the Eastern Sea, at the opening of the Hàn River. The tourism sector is a vital component of the city’s economy, with its status as a transportation hub for central Vietnam and its proximity to several

UNESCO World Heritage Sites - including the Imperial City of Huế, the Old Town of Hội An and the Mỹ Sơn ruins - fuelling much of the activity. Mỹ Sơn is an archaeological site dating back more than a thousand years, in Quảng Nam. Located in a remote forested valley

some 70 kilometres west of Danang, this former capital and religious centre of the Champa Kingdom once contained in excess of 70 temples and stupas. Although badly damaged by bombing raids in the 1960s, the site still has more than 20 structures and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

Many statues, sculptures and reliefs recovered from Mỹ Sơn are kept in the Museum of Cham Sculpture, near the Hàn River in the heart of Danang. Dating from the fourth to the 14th centuries, the sensual artwork on these artefacts depicts daily activities as well as Hindu and Buddhist religious themes. The Marble Mountains are rocky limestone outcrops jutting out of the beach just south of Danang. Paths lead to the top of the forested cliffs, affording spectacular views of Non Nuoc Beach and the South China Sea. The caves nestled in the cliffs were originally inhabited by the Cham people. Later, the Nguyễn Dynasty built numerous pagodas among the caves. The Marble Mountains are home to various artisans producing sculpture and artwork at its base at Non Nước Village. Non Nuoc Beach is a white sandy beach on the outskirts of Danang, and is renowned for both its spectacular
beauty and for its history as an tourism destination for American troops during the Vietnam War, when it was known as China Beach. Today, the beach, along with My Khê beach to the north, are home to luxurious resorts, surfing and entertainment facilities. Finally, Bà Nà Hills is a mountain resort with a five km-long cable car system which carries guests up to Bà Nà’s peak at 1487 metres above sea level.

You’ll be asked to fill out a questionnaire that is equal parts medical and metaphysical, ranging from health and skin problems to your favorite colour, food, weather – even your personality type and greatest fears. Traditional Vietnamese medicine, called Dong Y, is derived from Chinese medicine and focuses on restoring balance between yin and yang and finding harmony among the Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. The flow of energy in our bodies is thought to follow the same path as nature: wood kindles fire, fire forms ash (earth), earth solidifies to form metal, metal (minerals) enriches water, water nourishes wood (trees). After your therapist finds your element, she will create a bespoke natural oil blend that best suits you. Your package will then include Dong Y treatment on a warm bed made from Danang’s famous marble, long regarded for its therapeutic properties. You’ll find this pattern of five frequently repeated throughout Vietnam. Marble Mountains, a popular attraction around 40 minutes from the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort, are better known to the Vietnamese as Ngu Hanh Son, or Five Elements Mountains, with each one named for a natural element. You’ll also encounter the Five Elements in Vietnamese cuisine, where each taste (sour, bitter, sweet, spicy and salty) corresponds to an element.
