WORLD TRAVEL AWARDS LATIN AMERICA GALA CEREMONY On behalf of World Travel Awards, I warmly welcome you all to our Latin America Gala Ceremony 2015, this year hosted here in the stunning Colombian capital of Bogotá. With so much to see in the city, I hope you’ve had a chance to visit some of the sites before joining us as we celebrate excellence in tourism this evening. This is the first time World Travel Awards has visited Colombia in our 22-year history and it is an honour to finally arrive at one of the most sought-after destinations on earth. Led by Bogotá, Colombia has seen its reputation transformed in recent years, emerging as a true champion of tourism here in South America. Tonight’s exceptional event is part of our yearlong Grand Tour 2015 to celebrate the world’s outstanding travel brands, covering six continents and featuring over 9,000 nominees. We began in May at the Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach in the United Arab Emirates with our Middle East Ceremony and were welcomed to Kempinski Seychelles Resort in June for our Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony. Both events were warmly received, leaving us in a strong position for the rest of the year.

Also on our agenda for 2015 is Sandals Emerald Bay in the Bahamas, which will welcome the Caribbean & North America Gala Ceremony; and the InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong, which will stage our Asia & Australasia Gala Ceremony later this month. We will finish with the World Travel Awards Grand Final at Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort in El Jadida, Morocco, in December. Each year our locations, categories, nominees and, most importantly, the number of voting travel professionals increases exponentially, revealing the tremendous public demand for the recommendation a World Travel Award signifies. The recognition we offer is one of a kind, as no other organisation has the experience, the gravitas, or the loyal following of more than half of a million travel, tourism and hospitality professionals we possess. I wish to thank our hosts this evening, Bogotá Tourismo, and to thank you all for joining us on this special evening. Finally, congratulations to all our nominees on your endeavours and achievements this year – and the very best luck!

The World Travel Awards mission is to recognize and reward excellence in the field of travel industry and tourism. And you are the best of the guild, why we are here. Show the most beautiful in the world, promoting cities, it is a job for beings with free spirits; ready to live, to travel the five continents, to transmit each experience. And, certainly, these will be days to discuss about Bogotá, in Colombia, from the experience itself. Reason why, in this warm

SOUTH AMERICA
With the creation of LATAM finally complete, South American tourism is entering a golden age. Here Breaking Travel News brings you the latest headlines.
The big news in South American tourism has been the completion of the merger of LAN Airlines and TAM Airline – with the LATAM brand replacing both this year. The new LATAM branded airline group will unite all the passenger and cargo airlines for LATAM Airlines Group. The new group includes LAN Airlines and its affiliates in Peru, Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador; in addition to TAM Linhas Aéreas, and its subsidiary TAM Air Transport Mercosur, TAM Airlines (Paraguay), and the cargo carriers comprised of LAN CARGO, LAN CARGO Colombia, ABSA (TAM Cargo) and Mas Air. The decision to rebrand the carriers under a single flag follows a period during
which the group made great advances in achieving synergies for internal processes, network optimisation, and fleet restructuring and modernisation. For that reason, the new brand will incorporate the most valued strengths and characteristics of both LAN and TAM, in addition to the important histories of both carriers, 86 and 39 years respectively, during which they became part of the history of the region by contributing to its growth, development and increased connectivity. “Out of all of the options that we were considering, the name LATAM always seemed to us to be the most natural evolution of both the LAN and TAM brands, but a period of mutual understanding and maturation was necessary to make the decision. We knew that having a single brand was essential to consolidate LATIN AMERICA GALA CEREMONY

the connection between LAN and TAM, and the name LATAM creates a strong identity for the airlines that form the largest airline group in Latin America,” said Mauricio Amaro, president, LATAM Airlines Group. “With LATAM we will continue on the path of leadership that LAN and TAM started in parallel, working closely together over the past three years to implement an ambitious agenda of innovative projects for our passengers to have a better experience with us before, during and after their flight.

zil’s investment in public infrastructure ahead of the games. With over 480,000 tourists predicted to descend on Rio de Janeiro for the Olympic & Paralympic Games next summer, the Light Rail will carry approximately 285,000 tourists every day, easing the pressure on the city’s other transport systems. The stops will connect with major bus, train, ferry and metro lines, as well as a central vein running straight from Rio’s Santos Dumont Airport into the heart of the city. Due for completion in April 2016, the system will also connect Rio’s downtown district and Port Zone, home to the city’s most popular bars, clubs and museum, with six transport lines and 42 stops. The Light Rail’s futuristic design means that the electricity will be drawn from
the tracks via underground stores, rather than overhead cables or wires. The only other country in the world to have such a system is Dubai. The estimated cost of the VLT’s six lines is R$1.157 billion, and will open to locals in two stages. The first stage between Rodoviaria Novo Rio bus station and Santos Dumont airport will pass through Praça Mauá square, famed for its iconic Brazilian architecture, while the second stage will connect the central train station, passing the historic Avenida Marechal Floriano and Largo da Carioca, the social and cultural epicentre of the city. There are currently ongoing discussions to roll out Rio’s Light Rail to other cities in the country including Brasilia, Cuiaba and Curitiba.

BOGOTÁ
As World Travel Awards visits Colombia for the first time, Breaking Travel News here takes a look at its energetic capital Bogotá, host to the Latin America Gala Ceremony 2015. Bogotá came of age in the twentieth century, as the rapid transformation of the city’s cultural life accelerated. The trend was partially due to new methods of communication, with newspapers, domestic and foreign magazines, and cinema, as well as the introduction of radio, telegraph and the telephone. Suddenly the whole world was in town. At the same time the growth of air travel allowed citizens of the city to travel more

widely, bringing new ideas back to the Colombian capital. In the latter half of the century waves of peasants and farmers came to Bogotá looking for work and better opportunities, tripling the population, which went from 700,000 in 1951 to 1,600,000 in 1964, and 2,500,000 inhabitants in 1973. As the numbers grew, so the city modernised and expanded its employment
duction became one of the most appreciated ornamental and utilitarian expressions of city life, and a source of income for family businesses.
CULTURE Multifaceted and diverse, Bogotá palpitates to the rhythm of the most dynamic cities. Its cultural everyday nature is expressed with demonstrations of every type, from the most spontaneous to the most formal, in a wide gallery of events of every scale.
opportunities. Finance, culture, and education all boomed, while construction projects such as El Dorado Airport (which replaced ancient Techo Airport) were completed. This change acted a catalyst for the city’s urban development and a large amount of neighbourhoods were development to the West along the avenue that connects the airport to the city. The North Main Road also helped in the expansion of urban development to the north of the city. Today, Bogotá is a modern metropolis with a population of nearly seven million,
covering approximately 127 square miles. Due to the technical advances of big cities, and the substantial transformation in the past eight years, Bogotá is now a friendly and lovely city that offers a rich and varied cultural life. This is a city that provides any modern service or comfort required, without giving up many of the colonial customs that were preserved in traditional neighbourhoods. The economy of the city has greatly developed and diversified through the years. Industrial production has grown substantially, requiring the development of specialised industrial areas. Craft pro-

CENTRAL AMERICA
Cancun – considered Mexico & Central America’s Leading Destination by voters at the World Travel Awards – has been leading the way in Central American tourism, with Breaking Travel News here bringing you the latest. Thanks to the recent strengthening of sterling there has never been a better time for British holidaymakers to make the most of Cancun’s world-class beaches, hotels and attractions. Last month the Pound hit an all-time high against the Mexican Peso, climbing to MXN $27 to the pound, up from MXN $21 in August 2014; the change represents a massive 29 per cent year on year increase in spending power for Brits visiting Mexico.
24
Cancun has long been an affordable city for holidaymakers and business travellers alike, but according to September 2015 data from the research and cost comparison website Numbeo, visitors are now getting much more for their buck. When comparing the costs of holiday essentials, Cancun is offering much better value for money than many other Caribbean destinations. For example, a four-

new service will be the longest non-stop flight in the world, at a record 17 hours 35 minutes in the westbound direction. The new route will also be Emirates’ first gateway destination in Central America. Service to Panama City, Panama’s capital and largest city by population, will commence with a daily flight operated by a Boeing 777-200LR aircraft in a threeclass layout - eight in First, 42 in Business, and 216 in Economy. The aircraft can carry up to 15 tonnes of cargo. Key imports to the country include pharmaceuticals, machinery products, iron/steel rods, and electronics.
star hotel in Cancun now costs an average of £99 per night compared to £113 in Barbados and £129 in the Bahamas. It is a similar story with eating and drinking. Cancun has an exciting gastronomy scene with some of the best restaurants and most talented chefs in the region, yet average dinning bills are considerably lower than those in Barbados and Saint Lucia. According the Post Office Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer 2015 report, a three course meal for two costs on average just £43.61 in Cancun, this compares to £78.32 in St James in Barbados and £66.09 in Rodney Bay in Saint Lucia. Furthermore a round of drinks consisting of a coffee, a coke, a bottle of beer, a glass of wine and a bottle of water costs on average £9.98 in Cancun. The same round will set holidaymakers back £12.99 in Barbados and £12.09 in St Lucia. The nine latest additions to Cancun’s Underwater Museum of Art will be sub-
merged in the waters off Cancun in the coming weeks to join the underwater galleries of more than 500 statues created by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor. The new pieces were created by several artists, including the current resident artist, Elier Amado Gil. His piece, called “El Entendimiento (Understanding),” is composed of six figures gathered around a large stone symbolising Cancun and is designed to showcase the human ability of understanding. Each statue is made with materials that are safe for marine life and encourage the formation of artificial reefs. The museum, which debuted in 2010, is one of the best loved attractions in Cancun. Several local operators offer tours to the museum site each day, where the statues can be viewed by divers, snorkelers and through glass-bottom tour boats.
Service to Panama City will operate through Tocumen International Airport. Both a vibrant metropolis and gateway to tropical destinations, Panama City is also the economic and financial centre of the country with the major industries being international banking, commerce, and tourism. Ideally located between North and South America, as well as the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, Panama City has developed an unrivalled transportation and communication network. “Panama City will be our first destination gateway in Central America, providing a convenient option for our passengers travelling from or through our global hub in Dubai and onward to destinations throughout Central America, the Caribbean and the northern part of South America,” said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman, Emirates Airline & Group. “We’re also pleased to be the only commercial airline to offer a daily, First Class service to travellers on what will be the world’s longest non-stop flight.”

AVIANCA
Avianca - as Official Airline Partner for the World Travel Awards Latin America Gala Ceremony 2015 - has been an invaluable supporter of this evening’s event. Here Breaking Travel News brings you the latest headlines from the carrier. Avianca has launched its new Boeing 787-8 aircraft on its routes to and from Europe. In a first phase, the Boeing 787 will operate some frequencies on the Bogotá-Madrid, Cali-Madrid and Medellín-Madrid routes. The modern aircraft will progressively replace the Airbus A330 currently operating all routes to and from Barcelona, Madrid and London. The addition of these new planes to serve passengers on transatlantic routes means Avianca can offer a new experience when flying. With a capacity for 250 passengers: 28 in Executive Class and 222 in Tourist, the B787 is characterised by its sophisticated design and its progressive technology.
28
Adjustable lighting in the different phases of flight, more spacious seats, wider aisles and larger bathrooms are just some of the advantages on offer. The Boeing B787-8 Dreamliner is known for its high operational efficiency and the technological advances of its engines, which allow a range of more than 14,500 flight kilometres. Likewise, the aerodynamic conditions allow increased strength and flexibility, generating a more pleasant flight experience, even in turbulent conditions.
PASSENGER INCREASES During a record breaking July this year, the subsidiary companies of Avianca
WWW.WORLDTRAVELAWARDS.COM
Holdings carried 2,564,518 passengers, up 10.8 per cent when compared to July 2014. At the same time, capacity, measured in available seat kilometres, increased 8.5 per cent, while passenger traffic, measured in revenue passenger kilometres, increased 10.8 per cent. In July, the subsidiary airlines of Avianca transported a total of 1,530,033 travellers in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador, up 13.3 per cent compared to July 2014 and illustrating the tremendous strength of the carrier. Capacity increased 10.4 per cent, while passenger traffic increased 15.6 per cent. As a result, the load factor for July was 81.6 per cent an increase of 370bp when compared to July 2014.
In international markets during the same month Avianca transported 1,034,485 passengers, up 7.4 per cent compared to July 2014.
FABIO VILLEGAS RAMIREZ Finally, after ten years in office, Avianca chief executive Fabio Villegas Ramirez announced earlier this year he would resign in January 2016. “It has been ten years of intense collaboration and constant transformation to creating value for a company that, in 2004, was on the verge of closure,” he said. “The work we have done over the years has allowed us to position Avi-
anca as one of the most prestigious and fastest growing airlines in the region and the world.” The figures speak for themselves. Avianca went from carrying five million passengers in 2005 to 26 million in 2014. Its fleet went from having 39 aircraft, with an average age of more than 12 years, to having 181 next-generation aircraft, making it the most modern fleet in the region and keeping Avianca at the technology forefront. From its beginnings as a local airline focused on the Colombian market serving 35 destinations, it has been transformed,
after its merger with TACA in 2010, into a multinational airline with three hubs and a vast route network directly reaching more than 100 cities in America and Europe on a daily basis. Each of the projects and achievements has been focused on quality service for its Avianca’s customers. As a result, the company currently enjoys the preference and loyalty of its passengers, reflected in the more than 6 million LifeMiles members in its frequent flyer program. Amid the restrictions in local and regional infrastructure, the company has managed to appease its effects and advance in its operational efficiency reaching compliance levels that exceed 90 per cent. In 2014, operating income totalled US$209 million. Its financial strength has enabled the company to access capital markets and its shares are traded today on the New York Stock Exchange. Referring to the evolution of the company in these ten years Fabio Villegas concluded: “We set out to make Avianca a leading airline in the region and I am glad to see that we have done just that. I have to thank each and every one of the 20,000 employees of Avianca, through their commitment and service focus under clear guidelines and strategic planning; we were able to keep the Company on the path of profitable growth.”

ON A HIGH IN BOGOTÁ
Bogotá is the capital and largest city in Colombia. Located in the geographical heart of America, it is the highest metropolis on the continent, home to more than eight million people in total at an altitude of more than 2,600 meters above sea level. Bogotá, in other words, is a city of altitude. In nearly 500 years of history, Bogotá has been filled with honours and glory. Not in vain is it considered a boundless city which enchants with its historic architecture, rich culture and the thousand and one dining options. Few cities have a landscape like the one Bogotá enjoys, surrounded by the green sea of the Andes Mountains. These are the mountains that rise above the east, Monserrate and Guadalupe, and are the city’s sanctuary. These Monuments located on top of the city - at 3,152 meters above sea level - reminds the inhabitants

that the capital has a custodian who oversees the divine protection of all. Bogotá aims for sustainability, something visible in more than 392 kilometres of cycle routes distributed throughout the city. On Sunday, the city’s main avenues are closed to make way for pedestrian and bikes, a space that for over 40 years is recognised worldwide as the bikeway. In it’s a hybrid public mass transportation - covering more than 87 kilometres on trunk roads and more than 663 kilometres in feeder routes - the city also has electric taxis that care for the environ-

ment. One can also find wetlands recovered where Bogotá strives to reclaim the space for wildlife that lived there before. Although the city is a green power, Bogotá has a vibrant, modern feel, bathed with numerous coloured brick buildings; a legacy of Rogelio Salmona, one of our bastions of architecture. A visitor will find a city where nature is mixed with large buildings, making this combination, one in which the old magical city and the modern one are merged into one with the sole purpose of falling in love.
The cuisine is like the country, mestizo, and due to the coincidence of different ethnic factors, there is not just one single Colombian cuisine but various regional cuisines. Each region has its specialties. Indigenous and Spanish ingredients are mixed with African, Arab and Spanish preparation methods.
Bogotá offers a wide variety of options for shopping, with items of high quality, made by designers, craftsmen, artists, tailors or carpenters on offer to all buyers at very reasonable prices. The town has shops from the leading brands and restaurants, whose flavours and attention are distinguished internationally.
CULTURAL CALENDAR
Added to this are hotels with the highest standard, which will make you live a unique and personalised experience, only for people who are seeking an alternative without limits.
Bogotá, as the largest and most travelled of cities, boasts a rich cultural calendar. A mixture of national and international events hosting artistic expression of all kind are welcomed, including concerts, exhibitions , theatre, film clubs, art galleries, photography, literature and poetry. Bogotá offers activities for all kinds of people. This cultural diversity is reflected in a strong infrastructure of public spaces, with 58 museums, 70 art galleries, 45 theatres and 600 live music venues dotted around the city. Bogotá was the first Latin American city chosen by UNESCO as the World Book Capital in 2007 and Creative City of Music in 2012. It is also home to great artistic festivals, such as Rock al Parque, and hosts international shows of recreation and entertainment in the centre of the city. The city is also one of the best options for business and investment in the Latin American, being home to over 1,000 multinationals. Therefore Bogotá is a very productive and efficient city, located in the most competitive context throughout South America. These conditions confirm why the city is considered the sixth most attractive destination for investment in Latin America. This efficiency is complemented with the El Dorando International Airport.
Bogotá has a huge diversity of religious beliefs, welcoming Christians, Muslims, and Jewish residents. However, Catholic devotion is most widespread, drawing many to the places of pilgrimage such as the Shrine Divine Jesus or the Shrine of the Fallen Monserrate.
HISTORIC CENTRE La Candelaria and the surrounding area are known as the Historic Centre, and are the visible reflection of the Spanish influence on the city. But over the centuries, French, Italian and Anglo-Saxon architecture ha also left its mark on the city; which is particularly evident in public buildings and private homes. Unlike other capitals, Bogotá’s avenues are identified by numbers and not by names, as happens in other cities on the continent. Bogotá’s historic centre is the place with the highest concentration of tourist attractions in the city. Arguably it has a hundred symbolic places. Alongside the great capitals of the world, the city has prioritised visitors, allowing them to walk freely, and has determined that tours through the historic centre are made by walkways, which are accompanied by colourful gardens, cultural events and musical tunes.
Places to see and enjoy are endless, but highlights include the Nariño Palace, seat of the National Government, El Capitolio Congress’ seat, La Catedral Primada, Liévano Palace, headquarters of the Mayor, Major College of Saint Bartholomew, San Carlos Palace, former presidential house, Colón Theatre, Coin’s House Botero’s Museum, San Agustín Cloister, Gold Museum, Monserrate Sanctuary, La Quinta de Bolivar and Chorro de Quevedo Square, among many others. Another area that the city has positioned as an area of huge cultural, culinary and tourist importance is the International Centre. Located ten minutes from downtown heading north, this point becomes the place where the urban renewal of Bogotá begins. The transition from one era to another is evident and the possibilities of enjoying a distinguished Bogotá, appear. The International centre originates from city’s growth as it forced itself into a process of renovation and renewal. The place still has buildings with immense historical significance, but also one can appreciate modern buildings, large hotels, convention centres, entertainment and latest generation streets. Going downtown is wonderful and an experience nobody will forget, because it allows the visitor to get in to gracious streets and to witness houses over 200 years old. True, the tour of the International centre is not prolonged or extensive; but tourists are overwhelmed by the green freshness of the place, the rich cuisine, huge squares and even a good bar. Right there is located the Bavaria Central Park, District Planetarium, National Museum, Independence’s Park, Modern Art Mu-

seum, the National Library, Jorge Eliecer Gaitan Theatre and the Colpatria building, currently the highest in the country. At the International Centre, everything is distributed harmoniously and it can be easily intimate with a modernist architecture where dreams come true. Going north from the vicinity of the International centre is located Chapinero. The story tells this was a remote village in the city centre with huge estates; but when tram opened road in the middle of fields and pastures towards this sector of Bogotรก, the wealthy families chose to locate their homes, built their casasquintas and the city grew northward. The sector and its people never moved away from modernity and they were transforming the sector at par with the demands of the world, being awarded because of the construction of wide roads, the tram service and the establishment of new scenarios for entertainment, rest and trade. The constant movement of people, the arrival of new vertical buildings, the layout of the road and the street furniture; they symbolise the time passage and determine at least one hundred years between the historic and current. It is clear that every place has its place and time in history; but no one could say that Chapinero is not a classic, traditional sector of Bogotรก. The city is inclusive and seeks to treat each of its residents and visitors as an equal. The city currently has a range of commercial services focused on LGBT diversity, from bars, spas, shops, restaurants and clubs.

USAQUÉN Bogotá has made a great effort to preserve the original and authentic condition of the town and this has been achieved; so it is impossible not to be part of the story, a story written with notes of melody and verses, but one which has not yet reached its end. Usaquén is good to inspire love, to love and even for getting engaged, that’s why Santa Barbara’s church is often the ideal partner when a couple wants to marry. Visit Usaquén to find the Hacienda Santa Barbara Mall, Usabatá Market, Usaquén’s Square, The Cloister & Church of St. Barbara, the Local Mayor’s Institution, the Flea Market or Toldos de San Pelayo, Railway Station, Santander’s Museum, the Santa Ana mall and Unicentro Mall.
CORFERIAS With over 60 years of experience, Corferias has remained alive and active to economic exchanges between Colombia and the other countries of the world through creation and promotion of fairs, exhibitions, events and conventions; facilitating its work with national and international visitors and exhibitors in a space that meets quality standards. Corferias promotes and organises Colombia’s participation in fairs and exhibitions that take place abroad, and participates as partner companies with the same goal towards promoting industrial and commercial development.
Tourism and other attractive features of Bogotá are recognised worldwide and is very difficult to those who visit not to leave convinced that their expectations have been exceeded. In addition to the urban, the city has a rural attraction that makes it a comprehensive and complete tourist offer.
AROUND BOGOTÁ Enjoying a weekend, a holiday or vacation in one of the nearby municipalities to Bogotá is something of traditional, as the region is a melting pot, of food and historical zones. The inexhaustible gastronomic, cultural, entertainment and sport offer has no end. There is no excuse for not getting to know Nemocón and the mine, a wonderful underground spectacle. The mine is an adventure 60 meters underground with a distance of 2,500 meters. The mine doors are open to provide visitors a great opportunity to explore the depths of Colombian history. For an hour along the bowels of the earth you will travel, enjoying the beautiful salt formations, water mirrors, a wishing well, the chapel of the Virgen del Carmen and the heart of Nemocón.
MORE INFORMATION Multifaceted and diverse, Bogotá palpitates to the rhythm of the most dynamic cities. To discover more, visit the official website at www.Bogotáturismo.gov.co.
To Bogotá it is very important to have a multi-stage like this to ensure the best conditions for tourists and to treat the people who come with comfort and tranquillity to allow them to generate added value in satisfaction.

RELAXING SIGHTSEEING WITH THE ROPEWAY Nowadays, ropeways are not just there to move people from the valley to the top of the mountain. Besides the classic application of ropeways in winter sports, LEITNER ropeways is also very successful with projects in the alternative use of ropeways – for example with transport systems to tourist attractions. Thanks to their outstanding architecture, cable-drawn transport systems are often tourist attractions in their own right and offer a very positive experience for the passengers. The adventure of the ride on an aerial tramway is an experience in itself. Passengers are offered a view from above that they would have missed had they been traveling in a tour bus or private car. Furthermore, cable-drawn transport systems ensure a stress-free trip that saves time and is also ecologically friendly. Steep sections can be overcome easily and the last obstacles for visiting the fortress of Narikala in Tbilisi, the recreational area in Ordu or the Ritten near Bolzano are eliminated.

long-established ski region around the Kitzbüheler Horn, the Nordstau weather effect ensures virtually guaranteed snow from December to April. Thanks to the grass cover up to the summits, skiing is possible even with small amounts of snow. There are also 820 snow cannons to create the perfect conditions for winter sports. And even if you don’t come to Kitzbühel to ski, you’ll find plenty to do with winter hiking, snowshoe walks, and horse-drawn carriage rides, or simply stroll around the picturesque town centre. In addition to sports there are lots of events that make Kitzbühel a fascinating winter destination. For example, the town’s advent celebrations with a traditional Christmas market and the New Year’s Eve fireworks on the Rasmusleiten create a romantic and magical atmosphere. High-profile events like the Hahnenkamm Races and the Valartis Snow Polo World Cup reflect Kitzbühel’s more sophisticated and international side.
