As World Travel Awards arrives in Tanzania for the first time ahead of the Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony 2016, Breaking Travel News here takes a look at the latest developments in the national hospitality market. The president of the United Republic of Tanzania recently appointed Devota Mdachi to the post of managing director of Tanzania Tourist Board. Mdachi who was Tanzania Tourist Boardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s director of marketing, has been acting in the position of managing director for two years before being appointed in full to the position. It makes her to be the first Tanzania woman to hold the position of managing director of the Tanzania Tourist Board since its establishment in 1993. Mdachi, 50, was first recruited by Tanzania Tourist Board as a tourist information

officer, at the TTB branch office in Arusha 1994 before being transferred to Dares-salaam, the commercial capital city of Tanzania in 1998. She later rose to the level of senior tourist information officer in 2000; and later principal tourist information officer and head of the Tourist Information Centre, Dar-es-salaam in 2004. In May 2010 Mdachi was appointed principal marketing officer. In March, 2011, Mdachi worked with the regional tourism organisation of Southern Africa, under the marketing and communications department for a period of three months.

On her return to Tanzania in June, 2011, Mdachi was appointed director of marketing of the Tanzania Tourist Board and later acting managing director of the Tanzania Tourist Board in March 2014. Mdachi, who is also one of the five appointed Mwl Nyerere Golden Award Women achievers for the year 2015, has a BA degree in International Relations and Advanced French Language from the University of Dar-es-salaam; MA in Tourism from the Open University of Tanzania (2008); and post graduate certificate in Tourism from the International School of Tourism, Rome Italy (2000).

ITB BERLIN Taking its place on the global stage, Tanzania has successfully participated in the 50th edition of ITB which ended recently in Berlin, Germany. The event was used as a unique platform for marketing destination Tanzania and her tourist attractions as well as allowed participants a chance to make good business deals with the many visitors flocking at the Tanzania stand throughout the show. According to the managing director of Tanzania Tourist Boar, Devota Mdachi,

a total number of 90 private and public companies from Tanzania participated in this year. “We are pleased that we fully utilised some of the events at ITB such as the East African Community day that we hosted at our stand, media interviews by International television and radio stations, and other professional meetings that ran concurrently with the show to aggressively market our tourism attractions,” explained Devota. On his part the marketing manager Geofrey Meena noted that out of 90

companies 59 showcased the country’s spectacular tourism attractions as well as their services under TTB stand to tourism and travellers and travel trade professionals worldwide. Another 14 companies were under Zanzibar Tourism Investment, whereas ten companies participated under African Travel and Tourism Association, and the rest participated privately. Team Tanzania comprised of 56 companies from the private sector including Tour and Travel operators, and Accommodation facilities. More than 187 countries and 10,000 companies participated in the ITB 2016 which also attracted 196,000 visitors from all over the world.

LOUNGES AT JKIA Kenya Airways also recently unveiled two new swanky lounges at its dedicated Terminal 1A located at its hub the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi. The Simba Lounge and Pride Lounge are for the exclusive use of Premier World passengers flying from or transiting through Kenya Airways’ JKIA hub. The lounges are also used by Sky Priority passengers from the airline’s SkyTeam partners who rated them amongst the top in the world.

Pride Lounge, which is set on 991 square metres, features a circular layout overlooking the airside. It will provide premium hospitality complete with a Cigar Room, Piped music (sectional), Washrooms and showers, a Kiddy Zone and a Dining/ Working area. Simba Lounge spans 360 square metres. IMPROVED HUB CONNECTIVITY This year, Kenya Airways moved its operations to the newly build Terminal 1 A arrivals and departures. The new ultra-modern terminal is dedicated to Kenya Airways and its Sky Team partners. The spacious terminal boosts over 30 dedicated check-in counters, fast baggage belts as well as chic new lounges for the Premier World guests. Recent hub redesign will see Kenya Airways operate improved schedule that ensures efficient use of its aircraft and crew and flight connections for passengers. There is an increase in flight frequencies to some cities on its network especially in Africa and changed flight schedule. This has also improved connectivity through the Nairobi hub by 20% for transit passengers.

Air Seychelles’ switch to its new Sabre reservation and check-in platform at Mahe International and Praslin Airports has been successfully completed. The first service handled under the new system was flight HM3143 which departed Praslin for Mahe, while the first International flight was HM18 from Seychelles to Abu Dhabi. Roy Kinnear, chief executive, Air Seychelles, said: “The cutover to the new Sabre reservation and check-in platform has been an outstanding operation involving hundreds of Air Seychelles staff and months of hard

work. While one will always expect some minor disruption during an implementation of this magnitude, it was very pleasing to see such a smooth transition in such a well-executed manner with our team committed to delivering it successfully and on time. To have achieved this cutover with such minimal disruption to our operations and guests, is testament to the excellent teamwork between Air Seychelles, Sabre Airline Solutions, and our partner Etihad Airways.” Kinnear added: “We now have a reservation and check-in system that is world class, and we are confident it will provide a more customer

friendly check-in experience, which at the same time will allow us to grow our operations commercially in the future. World Travel Awards has reached an agreement with Realtours and the Associação Empresarial de São Tomé e Príncipe to host the World Travel Awards Africa Gala Ceremony 2017. The event will be held in the city of São Tomé, with major sponsors including CST, Mota Engil, HBD, BISTP and Ghana Link Networks Services already confirmed. This is in addition to official institutional and financial support from the government of São Tomé & Príncipe. The Maldives will welcome World Travel Awards as host of the Grand Final 2016. The ceremony will welcome winners from the six regional World Travel Awards Gala Ceremonies, with the events this year set to take place in Zanzibar, Dubai, Peru, Turkey, Jamaica and Vietnam. Winners from each region will be welcomed to compete for the global titles. WTA was established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry. Today, the WTA brand is recognised globally as the ultimate hallmark of quality, with winners setting the benchmark to which all others aspire.

Republic of the Maldives is a sovereign archipelagic nation positioned in the Indian Ocean. Notably the south Asian island nation has no counterpart in the entire world in terms of its unique geography and topography. The Maldives encompass more than 99 % of the sea and less than one per cent of the land. The 99 per cent of the sea is home to one of the most diverse marine treasures of the world. Less than one per cent of the land is a masterpiece in natural landscaping. The Maldives comprises of 26 natural atolls consisting of dual island chains. Incidentally the Maldivian language has the distinct pleasure of contributing to the English word “atoll”, which was derived from the Maldivian word “atholhu”. There are channels of various sizes between the atolls used for navigation. For efficient administrative functioning, the 26 natural atolls are categorised into 20 administrative divisions. Particularly the island nation is located in a strategic area with access to major international sea routes in the Indian Ocean. The Maldives, located on top of a vast underwater mountain range have around 1190 islands and sandbanks. The pearl string like islands covers a land area of no less than 298 km2. All the islands are encircled by a lagoon blessed with crystal clear water. These islands are protected by a reef structure, housing one of the most exclusive and spectacular underwater life.
