Global Tourism It has been an exciting year for tourism, with records being broken around the world, new hotels reaching for the skies and competition pushing airlines to new heights. Here Breaking Travel News brings you some of the biggest headlines of 2013.

Firstly, in the Middle East the JW Marriott brand celebrated the opening of its new landmark luxury hotel, the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai. Acquiring the coveted title of the tallest hotel in the world from the Guinness Book of World Records, the 72-story property is the first JW Marriott Marquis outside of North America and the 59th addition to the brand’s global luxury portfolio. Soaring at 355 meters, the hotel is just 26 metres shorter than New York City’s famed Empire State Building. In Dubai, known throughout the world for its aweinspiring architecture, the hotel’s towers

have already become an icon on the city’s skyline “Dubai is an important destination for Marriott International as one of the world’s most exciting cities offering world-class facilities and infrastructure, central location in the region and future growth potential,” said Marriott International president Arne Sorenson. “Our expanding collection of world-class JW Marriott hotels offers accomplished travellers a one-of-a-kind luxury experience. The investment in this unique and visually stunning

hotel is testament to the continued opportunities that lie ahead for the brand and company.” In addition to serving luxury business travellers, the hotel, which is owned by Emirates Group, targets the lucrative and increasingly important meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions market by filling a long-identified gap in the region. Groups, meetings and conventions of up to 1,000 people can now meet, stay and dine, under one roof. The hotel is the first in Dubai that is able to accommodate large groups

and will play a key role in attracting major conventions and events to the destination. One of the most exciting events on the schedule for 2014 is the World Travel Awards Middle East Gala Ceremony, which will visit the property in early May to kick off the annual Grand Tour. BIRTHDAY PARTY Still in the Middle East, Etihad Airways, which has been recognised as the World’s Leading Airline for the past four years by the World Travel Awards, has been celebrating ten years of successful flying in 2013. In recent weeks the airline has be promoting its global

network, including its latest destinations: Los Angeles, which will operate from June 1st 2014 and Vietnam, which launched on October 1st 2013, as well as its increasingly popular leisure destinations Bangkok, the Maldives and Seychelles. The addition of Los Angeles to the Etihad network means the airline will span 96 passenger and cargo destinations in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia and North America. The airline has also been consolidating its equity stake expansion programme, most recently boosting its holding in Virgin Australia to 19.9 per cent. Etihad Airways also holds equity investments in airberlin, Air Seychelles, and Aer Lingus, will acquire 49 per cent of Air Serbia from January 2014, and, subject to regulatory approval, will acquire 24 per cent of India’s Jet Airways. It also has codeshare partnerships with 47 airlines worldwide. Etihad president James Hogan explained: “We look for

partners who share our vision of best in class service, working to a commercial mandate and delivering trade and tourism into their national economies.” Will they win a fifth title tonight? SAND CASTLES Caribbean powerhouse Sandals International has also had a great 2013, with confirmation of three new resorts, with two on the paradise island of Barbados alone. Sandals and the government of Barbados reached the agreement following months of negotiations earlier this year, with the company reopening the former Couples resort earlier this month. Sandals Resorts chairman, Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart, said the ten-acre property would redefine luxury on the island. He added: “Barbados and its people are so rich in culture, charm and personality and has been one of the leaders in Caribbean tourism for decades. We have been in discussions to bring our award-

Guest Editorial winning brands to this country for some time and are thrilled that negotiations have now been successfully concluded.” In addition to the opening of Sandals Barbados, Sandals also announced that an agreement has been reached with the government of the Barbados regarding the building of a brand new Beaches Resort at the site of former Almond Beach Resort in St Peter, Barbados. Stewart added: “Since it first launched over 16 years ago, Beaches has captured the hearts and minds of holidaymakers everywhere and I can assure you that what we’re planning in Barbados will become one of the most sought after resorts in the entire world.” In Grenada, Sandals will open the doors to one of its most contemporary Luxury Included resort, Sandals LaSource Grenada Resort & Spa, in December. Situated on 17 acres of stunning land along the pristine Pink Gin Beach, Sandals LaSource Grenada will offer guests the highest level of luxury with an unprecedented look and feel. With so much attention focused on the successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup 2022, it is easy to forget there is so much happening right here in Qatar right now. Here Breaking Travel News brings you all the latest developments from this fast emerging tourism hotspot.

Qatari hospitality has been enjoying a boom in 2013, with hotel consulting group STR Global Research releasing results for June 2013 showing Doha’s hotel occupancy rates rose by nearly 27 per cent, the largest increase of any country in the Middle East and Africa. The report also highlighted Doha as one of the best performing markets for revenue per available room with a 23.5 per cent increase to $119.52. Emphasising the growth, Qatar Tourism Authority recently released figures illustrating Qatar’s growing tourism

which show that despite a 4.5 per cent increase in hotel rooms available, QTA’s second quarter (April – June 2013) showed hotel occupancy rates rise from 58 per cent to 67 per cent. Furthermore, the total value of stays in four and five star hotels increased by $42.8 million with a 20 per cent increase in revenue at five star hotels. His Excellency Issa bin Mohammed Al Mohannadi, chairman, QTA, commented: “The fact that the city of Doha topped the list of Middle East and Africa for gains in hotel occupancy

reflects the success of QTA’s strategy to develop the tourism sector. The high level of demand reflects positively on the products and services of the tourism sector in Qatar, which is witnessing rapid growth.” He added: “This result marks the direction of the Qatari tourism and hospitality sector, with Qatar moving toward a more diverse economy the tourism industry is also rising in tandem. We see a bright future for Qatar as a tourist destination.”

In the past year, a number of international hotel brands have opened new properties in Doha including the Intercontinental Hilton and the St. Regis, plus with many more in development, this demonstrates Qatar’s growing appeal to global investors as a lucrative and long-term market. QATARI SKIES Qatar Airways has also seen rapid growth in 2013 as it completers 16 years of operations. The carrier currently flies a modern fleet of 129 aircraft to 133 key business and leisure destinations across Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and the Americas, with a number of key routes added this year. These include Gassim (Saudi Arabia), Najaf (Iraq), Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Chicago (USA), Salalah (Oman), Basra (Iraq), Sulaymaniyah (Iraq), Chengdu (China), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Ta’if (Saudi Arabia) and most recently Clark International Airport (Philippines). Over the next few months, the network will grow further with Sharjah, UAE (March 1st, 2014), Dubai World Central, UAE (March 1st, 2014), Philadelphia, USA (April 2nd, 2014) and Miami, USA (June 10th 2014). Doha will also welcome the new Hamad International Airport in the first quarter of 2014, with the location set to revolutionise air travel to the Middle Eastern destination. With waterfalls running down the walls, a dome-shaped blue mosque and a wave-like roof that rolls from check-in to immigration and the departure lounge, the airport is certainly something to behold. The $15 billion development covers an area of 22 square kilometres, a third of the size of Doha, and will cater for 28 million

annual passengers when it opens, before being expanded to 50 million within about three years. In true Persian Gulf style, 60 per cent of the airport is built on reclaimed land from the sea, and it has two runways, one of which at 4,850 meters, is one of the longest at any commercial airport. About 8,700 passengers will be able to move through the airport each hour, roughly 80 per cent of which will be transferring onto to other destinations. There is even a separate terminal for the Qatari royal family that can accommodate an Airbus A380. MODERN ART Marking its arrival on the world stage, the Qatar Museums Authority is presently celebrating the first solo exhibition in the Middle East of iconic British artist Damien Hirst. Taking place at the Alriwaq, Doha exhibition space, the event runs until mid January and has already welcomed thousands of guests from across the region. Held under the patronage of Sheikha Al Mayassa, the exhibition is the largest collection of Hirst’s work ever assembled and includes both iconic and previously unseen pieces.
