GRAND FINAL CEREMONY 2014
President of World Travel Awards 2 0 14
Thank you for joining us here at CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa on the sunshine island of Anguilla for what I am sure will be an unforgettable World Travel Awards Grand Final 2014. This evening represents the end of a year long journey for World Travel Awards, with our annual Grand Tour having taken us to the four corners of the earth in search of the very best in international hospitality. We began the year in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, with the Middle East Gala Ceremony, before visiting Athens, Quito, and New Delhi, India, for three more successful events. Over 9,000 nominees came before the WTA voters over the course of 2014, with only a handful being picked in each region. These select few now join us here this evening, with the very best of them taking home the global awards – the highest accolade in the travel, tourism and hospitality industry. Situated here in the crescent curve of Rendezvous Bay, Anguilla, I am sure you will agree CuisinArt is the perfect location to host the World Travel Awards Grand Final. Offering luxurious suites and villas, an exceptional range of fine dining experiences, the highly revered Venus Spa, and a thrilling challenge for golf aficionados at the resort’s stunning 18-hole Greg Norman Signature Design Championship
Course, this is a truly unique resort. This icon of the island continues to lead the way in Anguillan tourism, and I wish the team here many more years of success. Each year at World Travel Awards the number of locations, categories, nominees and, most importantly, the volume of voting travel professionals increases exponentially, revealing the tremendous demand among the public for what a recommendation signifies. Other organisations have tried to copy World Travel Awards, but none has the experience, the gravitas, the organisation or the loyal following of nearly half of a million travel professionals worldwide. A World Travel Award is the result of hard work, innovation, dedication and passion. We are truly unique. The best of luck to all of our nominees tonight and thank you once again for supporting World Travel Awards, ‘the Oscars of the travel industry’.

CARIBBEAN
A boom in connectivity with the UK and a surging market in the United States have driven a renewed sense of optimism in the Caribbean tourism sector. Here Breaking Travel News breaks down the figures.
The Caribbean recorded a rise in visitor arrivals during the first half of this year as confidence flowed through the region. According to figures released by the Barbados-based Caribbean Tourism Organisation, the region enjoyed a 4.3 per cent increase in overall visitor numbers during the first six months of the 2014, much in line with the world average of 4.7 per cent.
Caribbean Tourism Organisation director of research and information technology, Winfield Griffith explained that just less than 14 million long-stay tourists visited the Caribbean between January and June, with nearly half this number, some 6.87 million, coming from the United States. Griffith said, compared to the same period last year when 6.61 million North American visitors arrived in the Caribbean, the 2014 figure
represents a 3.9 per cent rise in arrivals from the US market. He added: “There is enough evidence to suggest that there is growing economic confidence in the region’s biggest neighbour and this is releasing much pent-up travel demand caused by a long recessionary period.” The Caribbean Tourism Organisation research head also said it was clear more Europeans and Canadians were

gravitating to the region during the period, showing increases of six and 4.3 per cent respectively. For the winter period, January to April, at least five countries reported double digit growth and the Caribbean Tourism Organisation said that destinations continue to power through the current summer, showing signs of doing exceptionally well this year. Griffith announced that the cruise sector enjoyed an eight per cent increase in passenger arrivals, to reach 13.1 million, during the first half of this year. Meanwhile, Caribbean Tourism Organisation secretary general Hugh Riley said: “Tourism is the business of the Caribbean and when we look at statistics we realise that is the most tourism dependent region in the world. All of us have to engage in the business.”
SKY HIGH From the UK market, a significant factor in the strong performances figures has been the extra capacity British Airways put into the Caribbean for summer
2014. Last year saw the British flagcarrier switch some capacity away from the Caribbean, sending three flights to Orlando instead, and cancelling its Puerto Rico route. But this year, the airline added another flight to each of St Lucia, Antigua, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, Grenada and Kingston, Jamaica, for the season April to October. For winter 2014-15 too, British Airways is increasing capacity, with its thrice-weekly Dominican Republic/ Antigua double-drop service switching to two direct Dominican Republic services, and two direct Antigua services.
strategic importance for the firm going forward, when Jamaica became the first Caribbean island with a Sensatori resort, which opened in May. With a new flight from Birmingham to Montego Bay this winter, Tui’s capacity to Jamaica will have doubled over three years by summertime.
Critical to Antigua’s growth has been Thomas Cook’s launch of an Antigua route from Manchester last November, along with playing host to the EnglandWest Indies Twenty20 Series in February. The tour operator is also to restart a Dominican Republic route this winter, which the tourist board there hopes will help the country finish the year around ten per cent up from the UK.

Barbados, which remains the most popular island for the UK market, has had a healthy start to the year, up 8.3 per cent between January and July. St Lucia reports UK visitors were up eight per cent up in the first seven months of this year.

ANGUILLA
A warm and welcoming island destination tucked away in the northern Caribbean, Anguilla this year welcomes the World Travel Awards Grand Final for the first time. Here Breaking Travel News takes a look around the sunshine island.
Embraced by unrivalled white beaches and breathtaking turquoise seas, Anguilla is casual and easy, a unique blend of high style and low-key elegance, and the best of the good life set to a slow and casual island tempo. The most northern island in the Leeward Island chain, the destination is less than ten miles north of St. Martin and 200 miles east of Puerto Rico, two of its major tourism gateways. Anguilla is located just a small step off the beaten path, which helps to

protect its character and exclusivity while offering travellers convenience in getting there by air or by sea. From the United States east Coast, travellers can leave in the morning and arrive mid-afternoon in time for a swim and to catch the sunset. Approximately 16 miles from east to west, and three miles across at its widest point, Anguilla is flat, low-lying and comprised of coral and limestone, covered mostly with rock, sparse scrub
oak, few trees and some salt ponds. One main road runs through the centre of the island, making Anguilla easy to traverse by car in less than a half an hour. Envied for its pure, pristine white sands and wrapped in brilliant turquoise waters, Anguilla boasts well over 33 of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Beach access is public, and beaches are uncrowded. Dusty roads that branch off of the main road lead to quaint villages,
majestic hotels, romantic restaurants and, of course, the amazing beaches. Anguilla enjoys warm and sunny days and star-filled nights, with an average temperature of 80ºF and gentle trade wind breezes year round. Rains typically falls in September and October, but usually not all day; and February through March is the dry season. Most beaches are placid and calm with gentle shoals; occasionally, the Atlantic side of the island can produce some surf.
PEOPLE OF ANGUILLA The people of Anguilla are a great part of what makes the island such a magnificent place. Gentle and gracious, locals take pride in their home and pleasure in sharing it with visitors from around the world. Anguillans share a reverence for family, love, community and God. Peace, individualism and a soulful understanding of the joys of life create a home that is warm and welcoming, filled with joy and light. The island’s rich history and personality is embodied in its culture and heritage. From the ancient Amerindian settlements, through European colonisation, to the 1967 revolution, these and other events are woven into the tapestry of Anguillan life today. A British
Overseas Territory, English holidays such as the Queen’s Birthday, Whit Sunday and others are celebrated, but Englishspeaking Anguilla maintains a unique balance of historic influence that helps to create a truly individual island nation. May 30th, 1967, is celebrated annually as Anguilla Day, commemorating the repulsion of the Royal St. Kitts Police Force from the island. Britain intervened and a peacekeeping committee was established. Debates over Anguilla’s secession continued to be negotiated for over a decade, and on December 19th, 1980, Anguilla became a separate Dependent Territory with some measure of autonomy in government. Anguillians today celebrate their independence and their heritage of strength, survival, and determination with church services, uniformed parades, cultural performances and, of course, the traditional round-the-island boat race.

NORTH AMERICA With so much happening in North American tourism it can be difficult to know where to start. Here Breaking Travel News picks some of the biggest stories from the market as World Travel Awards arrives in the region for its 2014 Gala Ceremony.
Royal Caribbean Cruises has been causing a splash in North American tourism, recently announcing it has agreed with STX France to move forward on the order of a fourth Oasis-class ship for delivery in 2018. Royal Caribbean Cruises chairman Richard Fain announced the planned ship order at the keel-laying ceremony for the third Oasis-class ship at the STX shipyard in SaintNazaire, France. “The Oasis Class was a revolution in maritime design when it was launched in 2009,” explained Fain. “Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas continue to be in a class by themselves both in terms of guest

satisfaction and financial returns. Today’s announcement is a reflection of their success.” Known for pushing the boundaries and as part of the cruise line’s continuous improvement mantra, Oasis III will be approximately 20 per cent more energy efficient than Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, which already are the most energy efficient cruise ships in the world. The fourth Oasisclass ship will further build on that efficiency. The keel laying of the third Oasis-class ship marks an important milestone in the development of the ship, as it signifies the beginning of its physical construction.
During the ceremony, a 1,000-ton block was lifted by crane into the building dock. Newly minted coins were placed under the keel and will stay in place there until the end of the ship’s construction. Once the ship is near to completion, the coins are retrieved and presented to the ship’s captain and crew to be placed onboard the ship. According to maritime tradition, the coins are said to bring luck to the ship during its construction process and then to its Captain and crew when she is sailing out at sea. Still to be named, the third Oasis-class ship will be delivered in spring 2016. Royal Caribbean is considered North America’s Leading Cruise Line by the World Travel Awards.
LAS VEGAS Las Vegas - considered North America’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination by the World Travel Awards – has been leading a North American tourism surge, recording the third-highest number of tourists in a month in its history in July. Attracting 3.5 million people to the city, it was the best July visitation number on record, following up on the previous month being the best June ever. Although visitation was a 2.2 percent improvement over July 2013, it was the weakest monthly percentage increase of visitors for the year, a sign that the higher numbers are becoming the norm. For the first seven months of 2014, visitation is up 3.9 per cent from a year earlier to 24.2 million and is on track to eclipse 40 million for the year for the first time in the city’s history. The average daily room rate for the first seven months is up 6.5 per cent to $118.71 a night. July numbers were up 4.5 per cent to $105.23 in a month when hotels often discount rates to lure visitors into the summer heat. In 2007, Las Vegas recorded its highest average daily room rate with $132.09 for the year. The highest month on record was April 2007 when the rate averaged $146.53. Convention attendance climbed 14.1 per cent to 333,253, primarily because of the rotation of a major show. The Las Vegas Market Show, a furniture exposition at the World Market Center, drew 50,000 people in July, but was staged in August in 2013.
car rental giant Avis Budget Group has signed a multi-year partnership agreement with one of the fastestgrowing airlines in the Caribbean, Seaborne Airlines. Under the terms of the deal, Seaborne Airlines customers will have convenient access to vehicles from Avis Car Rental, Budget Car Rental and Payless Car Rental. Business and leisure travellers visiting the Seaborne Airlines website will have the ability to make an Avis, Budget or Payless reservation as a stand-alone car rental booking or by adding a vehicle rental to an existing flight booking. “This partnership is a strategic opportunity for us to accelerate growth throughout the Caribbean,” said Stephen Wright, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Latin America/Asia-Pacific, Avis Budget Group. “Seaborne Airlines has been operating in the Caribbean for more than 20 years and is well-respected throughout the region. We’re happy to land this new partnership and offer Seaborne Airlines customers an extended multi-brand transportation solution.” Avis is considered North America’s Leading Car Rental Company by the World Travel Awards.

Introducing
ANGUILLA
Ticked off Trinidad and Tobago? Been to Barbados and The Bahamas? Done the Dominican Republic? It’s time to try the British Overseas Territory of Anguilla - aka one of the Caribbean’s best-kept secrets.
38
WWW.WORLDTRAVELAWARDS.COM
On Anguilla - whose name means eel (an apt description for a long, thin island measuring a mere16 miles by three miles) - you’ll find turquoise seas together with gastronomy, history and culture in spades. Of course Anguilla’s biggest draw is arguably its beaches. Situated in the British West Indies, around 100 miles north west of Antigua, 150 miles east of Puerto Rico and nine miles north of St. Maarten, this laid back little island boasts some of the best beaches in the entire Caribbean. There are 33 to choose from including Shoal Bay East with its 2.5 mile stretch of sand, watersports facilities and restaurants, the secluded Captain’s Bay (accessed along a dirt track) and Little Bay - the latter of which is memorably accessed by boat from Crocus Bay. But regardless of where you decide to stretch out your beach towel, expect impossibly soft, squeaky sand the colour of icing sugar. But Anguilla offers so much more than just a day on the beach. Once you’ve had your fill of the eye wateringly beautiful beaches, it’s time to take to the sea: sailing is one of the most popular pastimes on Anguila but you’ll also find yachts, windsurfers and kayaks available for hire while, for true adrenaline junkies, water skiing can easily be arranged. Yet as enjoyable as activities above the water are, it’s what lies beneath that is of real interest. And if you’ve never snorkelled or dived on a Caribbean coral reef before, you’ll be wowed by the beauty and incredible diversity...

Anguilla is known as the ‘Wreck Diving Capital of the Caribbean’. The big headline grabber is the Spanish galleon, El Buen Consejo, but there are nine shipwrecks in its surrounding waters that are home to a wide variety of corals and marine life including angelfish, barracudas, margates, sharks, snappers and turtles. Back on dry land, the region’s gastronomy is a further pull. Food isn’t just for mealtimes on Anguilla - it’s a culture of its own. The island has over 100 restaurants - loved by the A-list likes of Robert De Niro and Paul McCartney - offering international and local cuisine, created by award winning chefs. And don’t worry about your waistline (you are on your holidays after all). Simply work off any excess calories consumed by following one of the numerous walking tracks around the island from the rocky coast line of Windward Point in the north to the ‘rain forest’ trail at Katouche. With jaw dropping view after jaw dropping view, you’ll want to get married just to have a honeymoon here. Or take to the fairways at CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa’s 18-hole, 7,063 yard golf course. Designed by Australian golfing legend Greg Norman, this US$50 million course has been hailed as the Caribbean equivalent of Pebble Beach thanks to its gorgeous ocean views and water features on no fewer than 13 holes. For those who like to stay where they play, the prestigious neighbouring resort (www. cuisinartresort.com )with its five restaurants and first rate spa, should fulfill every desire imaginable.

Other upscale accommodation options include the much loved Malliouhana - which is re-opening on a bluff high above Meads Bay and Turtle Cove as an Auberge Resort (www.malliouhana. aubergeresorts.com) in November 2014 following an extensive three year refurbishment. Whether you choose to stay at CuisinArt, Auberge or one of Anguilla’s other resorts, villas and intimate hotels, you can look forward to the sort of attention that makes you feel, even if only for a week, that you have entered a different world. So how to reach this idyllic low lying island? Currently, there are no direct international flights to Anguilla. However, from the United Kingdom, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic all have excellent services into Antigua and St. Kitts with onward connections to Anguilla. Flights are also available from Puerto Rico (one hour by air), which is served by several US and inter-island carriers. All told Anguila may be a good nine hour flight ride away from the UK, but that’s not much at all when you factor in how much fun and sun lies in store... technology, planning and product innovation has propelled Oman Air to the forefront of the aviation industry. The national flag carrier has recently taken delivery of its second Boeing 737-900, taking its fleet strength to 32. The arrival of the brand-new aircraft marks the start of a major three-year expansion programme. These are the first of 24 aircraft which will arrive with the Muscat-
based carrier between now and 2018, taking total fleet numbers to around 50 aircraft. The new arrivals are the first of 15 Boeing B737s that are expected by Oman Air, and will be joined over the next three years by three Airbus A330s and six Boeing B787 Dreamliners. Oman Air’s new Airbus A330-300 features 24 new Business Class seats designed by BE Aerospace.
Fitted in a 2-2-2 configuration, each comfortable and spacious 21-inch wide seat converts to a 77-inch long, fully flat bed. With electricallyoperated backrest, seat bottom, seat depth and leg rest controls, and a folding armrest, each customer remains in control of their own environment for the duration of their flight. Furthermore, one-piece meal table and cocktail table offer a range of dining options, whilst an integrated reading light and mood light controls enable customers to work, read or relax, according to their wishes. A literature pocket, headset compartment, life vest compartment and ample storage space keep each passenger’s space neat. Oman Air has also expanded its corporate social responsibility programme to include dedicated newspaper and magazine recycling points within its headquarters, and at Muscat International Airport. The initiative is being run in partnership with Mzaya Al Batina Modern LLC, an Omani company run by young local entrepreneurs. It will see Oman Air-branded collection points being placed in the airline’s HQ1 and HQ2 buildings, before being extended to include Oman Air’s extensive operation at its home airport. Paul Gregorowitsch, Chief Executive Officer at Oman Air, commented: “Oman Air is pleased to be extending our corporate social responsibility programme by working with Mzaya Al Batina to recycle more waste paper than ever before. The dedicated team at Mzaya Al Batina are experts in their field and are able to offer this service at no cost to Oman Air.
“We are proud to be promoting a greener, more environmentallysensitive agenda and we are sure that this latest recycling initiative will prove to be a major success. I would encourage colleagues throughout Oman Air to make the most of this opportunity by disposing of all their unwanted paper products at the designated collection points.” Oman Air currently operates direct international flights to major Gulf destinations such as Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Doha, Dubai, Al-Ain, Jeddah, Dammam, Kuwait and Riyadh from Muscat. The airline also flies to ten destinations in India – Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad, Delhi, Lucknow, Bangalore, Kozhikode and Jaipur. Chittagong in Bangladesh, Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad in Pakistan, Male in the Maldives, Colombo in Sri Lanka, Kathmandu in Nepal, Bangkok in Thailand, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Dar Es Salaam and Zanzibar in Tanzania. Oman Air also flies to Cairo, Beirut, Amman, Tehran, London, Frankfurt, Munich, Paris and Milan. The airline operates domestic flights from Muscat to Salalah and Khasab. To each one of the destinations that it covers, Oman Air lends a distinct touch of its legendary traditions of hospitality. To find out more visit www.omanair.com

Unforgettable
Marrakech
Historically, a trading post for Eastern and Western treasures, today the great city of Marrakech is an artistic crossroads, an international cultural centre and a “must-see” tourist destination.
Its surroundings are just as unforgettable. From the splendour of the High Atlas Mountains towering over the city’s 19 km ochre ramparts, to the beauty of the Berber villages and the wonder of the Medina – each one of them has so much to offer that some visitors never leave. In 1062, the first Almoravid emir, Youssef Ibn Tachfin, founded Marrakech and made it the capital city of an empire stretching from Barcelona to Ghana.

Five ways to unearth ten centuries of history include a walk in the rose garden surrounding the mosque and the minaret of the Koutoubia, a jewel of Hispano-Moresque art; the Bahia Arab-Andalusian palace with its gardens, patios, 150 richly decorated rooms, painted, gilded and inlaid wooden ceilings; the impressive Saadian Tombs, a magnificently decorated mausoleum; the Koranic school Ben Youssef Madrasa, formerly the biggest in northern Africa
and another jewel of Hispano-Moresque art; and finally, right next to it, the Marrakech Museum where treasures of Morocco’s cultural heritage and contemporary art exhibitions meet
THE HEART OF THE CITY... Jemaâ El Fna Square was listed as an Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity site in 2001. As the gateway between traditional Morocco and modern Morocco, it is irreplaceable. The
events organised for its recognition by UNESCO re-established the role it plays for Marrakech and Morocco. Worldwide, it is a symbol of deep rooted modernity and tradition. Located at the entrance of the Medina, in a huge enclosed pedestrian area lined with cafĂŠs, restaurants, shops and public buildings, the square is an explosion of culture, entertainment and commercial activity. It is alive late into the night, until the last lights go out and its pulsating nightlife goes quiet for a few hours. When morning comes, everything begins again; musicians, dancers, acrobats, fireeaters, fortune-tellers, henna tattooists, water carriers and storytellers reappear in their eye-catching costumes. They create, invent and share their knowledge of speech, movement and sound with their fellow citizens and with visitors from all over the world.
MARRAKECH, THE GARDEN CITY The Palmeraie of Marrakech, which dates back to the Almoravids dynasty, is a heritage symbol of the Red City. Covering 12,000 hectares, it is prized by local and foreign visitors. Over the years it has been subject to both internal and external soil erosion and degradation which has had impacted on the surrounding natural environment. His Majesty King Mohammed VI has taken hold of this situation, by creating The Mohammed VI Foundation for the Protection of the Environment, chaired by HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa. One of the programmes initiated by this foundation aims to mobilise different stakeholders to safeguard this natural heritage. Since the launch of this programme in 2007 and in accordance with the commitments of the partners, the rate of planting is on target: so far 412,552

seedlings have been planted and over the next six years, the foundation will continue to increase public awareness by running programmes and improving environmental education. This consists of plans to create an urban planning code of conduct and the creation of the International Living Museum, which will feature an oasis built around the three themes: Water, Gardens and Architecture. The water system is over 700 years old and is located in the Menara in the Hivernage area. It irrigates a vast, yet peaceful garden lined with olive trees.
In the nearby Gueliz, the Majorelle Gardens, created in 1920 and later restored by Pierre Bergé and Yves Saint Laurent, provide a habitat for three hundred species of plants and house the Islamic Art Museum, which displays more than four hundred objects.
MARRAKECH, THE MUSE Marrakech is an urban oasis. It knows how to make people feel welcome and inspired, and more and more creative adventurers favour Marrakech as their chosen place to share and develop inspiration. The abundance of studios, art galleries, literary cafés and restaurants showcase the city’s appreciation of art, design, architecture, interior decoration, fashion, craftsmanship and gastronomy. Its atmosphere goes beyond the medina and the history of the city: it bubbles in the old colonial cities Gueliz, Hivernage and in the very trendy Sidi Ghanem “industrial area”, where the most audacious showrooms have opened celebrating

the countries’ 1920s avant-garde urban planning and style. From candied Moroccan orange, to meltin-the-mouth lamb dishes combining the country’s famed fragrant spices, British Chefs such as Jamie Oliver and Heston Blumenthal have been inspired to bring Moroccan cooking to their own restaurants.
COSMOPOLITAN MARRAKECH Five-star accommodations such as Le Royal Mansour, La Mamounia and stunning guesthouses meet all the requirements for luxury travel in Marrakech. Famous restaurants, designer boutiques, show-rooms, fairs and festivals highlight the city’s appeal when it comes to attracting investors or stimulating entrepreneurship. Strategically, the priority now is to make such growth sustainable by combining it with the protection of the environment and with a
development which will benefit the whole population. ‘Openness’ and ‘worldly’ are characteristics that run in Marrakech’s veins. People are sophisticated but they feel at ease here; they can recharge their batteries or party at any time.
GASTRONOMY Marrakech gastronomy is famous for its outstanding “sweet and sour” flavours; from its saffron, cinnamon, cumin, chilli, ginger, mint and coriander aromas to its stewed meats and vegetable tagine. For special occasions, elaborate recipes are selected such as preserved mutton with raisins and almonds, pastillas, minced beef or chicken briquettes. And to end the meal, sweet honey pastries transform mint tea for an experience of pure culinary ecstasy.
Gushing down the steep slopes of the High Atlas Mountains, rivers have carved out fertile valleys and given birth to dozens of Berber villages. More and more of these villages and their clay Kasbah are now being restored and embellished with botanical gardens. In the Ourika Valley, a visit to the Safranière reveals all the secrets of the “red treasure”, Saffron. Used for fabric dying as well as in medicine and cooking, it is the most important aromatic and medicinal plant garden in Morocco.
SHOPPING Marrakech’s souks hold 40,000 craftsmen organised into zones according to occupation: dyers, ironmongers, blacksmiths, leather workers, basket makers, jewellers...
Continuing along the Ourika, go deeper into the Toubkal National Park and up the slopes of Mount Toubkal to the Oukaïmeden ski resort... The roads, which go through mountain passes from Tichka to Ouarzazate and from Test to Taroudant, reveal natural marvels such as the Zat Valley or the villages of Tighdouine and Talatast, Asni, Ouirgane and Imlil, and the lake Lalla Takerkoust.
Fabrics, clothes, rugs and spices are found here in a labyrinth of different markets. Behind the cries, scents, crowds and bargaining games lies an extraordinary social structure. There are souks... and there is Sidi Ghanem, Marrakech’s “industrial” area which has been reclaimed by new wave designers. In Sidi Ghanem, you can find contemporary crafts alongside traditional Moroccan design. Here, artists, decorators and craftsmen combine ancestral knowhow and international trends and exhibit in boutiques or show-rooms. They have approached all occupations – wrought-iron work, leather work, weaving, jewels, furniture, lights and lamps - in a unique way, reinventing the Moroccan art of entertaining. In March, the Riad Art Expo Fair opens to professionals and the general public, to showcase Marrakech’s contribution to contemporary design.
Only a few dozen kilometres away from Marrakech, their landscapes and panoramas are a ‘must see’ for any visitor.

With culturally-influenced cuisine – be it Berber, Arabic, Jewish or Christian – Marrakech is open to all and invites the world to come and enjoy a multicultural experience from Moroccan and international chefs.

REASONS TO COME TO
Quito
WHY VISIT QUITO? There is not only one reason, but several reasons which is why Quito is considered one of the leading destinations in South America, and therefore one of the best destinations to discover, according to the prestigious National Geographic Traveler magazine and the popular TripAdvisor website.
Quito is located in the middle of the world – Mitad del Mundo city Here you get close to the sun at 2,850 m and it is the only place in the world where you can put one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and one in the Southern Hemisphere. You can also experience the pure energy of the center of the world as you walk along the equator plotted by a French geodesic mission in the 17th century as it determined the point of Latitude 0 ° 0’0’’. This privileged location also gives Quito a wealth of virtues, evident in its climate and natural wealth.
CAPTIVATING CENTRO HISTORICO Discover the grandeur of Quito’s historic center, considered the largest and best preserved across America. It is also the jewel that prompted the declaration of Quito as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Centre. Here, you will capture the history of the city: the Society of Jesus, a masterpiece of Baroque in America; the Plaza Grande once the core of important historical deeds that tell the history of Quito and the country; walking the religious complex of San Francisco; also exploring La Ronda, a street that exudes charm with its traditional crafts and workshops. Don’t mistake The Centro Historico as a large museum when it is a dynamic,
vibrant place where its residents, merchants, clergymen, tourists, government officials and business people gather daily and night time comes alive with live culture and theatre.
LA COCINA QUITEÑA The flavors of Quito’s kitchens are worth exploring, including the traditional dishes of the mestizos (mix of pre-Columbian and colonial) and have a strong Andean and Iberian influence. Experience the flavor of the locro and the seco de chivo, some of the delicious dishes. In addition, Quito also offers a wide variety of international flavours along with vegetarian cuisine.
ARTISTS AT WORK In colonial times, Quito was an important cultural and artistic centre, and continues to be today. In Quito’s Centro Historico it is common to find artisans practicing traditional craft making in silver, toquilla straw, and tin working alongside barbers and toy makers. Some of the houses and original workshops of important contemporary artists such as Oswaldo Viteri, Eduardo Kingman Oswaldo Guayasamín are open to the public and wonderful places to explore and learn more about their lives and work.
OUR MUSEUMS, THEATERS AND CULTURAL CENTERS Quito is full of places that showcase
the history and vibrant stories of its past and where culture is also promoted through permanent and temporary exhibitions, theater, music and movies. The Museo de la Ciudad, the Museo Casa de El Alabado (with its extraordinary display of preColumbian art), the Museo de Cera, the Teatro Sucre, the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, and the Casa de la Música are all worth exploring. Additional museums around the city include Tulipe and Rumipamba (nature and archaeology museums) and La Florida, a site of archeologically significant burial chambers. Children also have special places to explore in Yaku Park Museum, the Interactive Science Museum and Train Museum.
CELEBRATING THE NIGHT There are several restaurants, cafés, bars and nightclubs in the neighborhoods of La Mariscal, La Floresta, Guápulo and La Carolina. Here you will find local music, local and international cuisine, festivals and many ways to celebrate life in Quito.
THE ROMANCE OF RAIL TRAVEL From the popular neighborhood Chimbacalle in Quito, is where you begin the journey on “the most difficult railway in the world”, now heritage tourist train. This rail line joined a country from the coast to the mountains and is an impressive example of engineering in the early twentieth century. There is also a Railroad Museum, which tells the early life story of this journey, which has been named one of the top railway experiences in the world.
SHOPPING In Quito, you’ll find a variety of shopping experiences for all tastes and budgets, including modern shopping centres like Quicentro
Shopping Mall and Scala Shopping Cenre, with the largest vertical garden in the Americas, featuring local and international fashion brands. And in the neighborhood of La Floresta and La Mariscal, you will find contemporary boutiques and galleries and explore the Centro Historico’s famous speciality craft stores like The Quinde. For art lovers, Quito is also the ideal destination. At El Ejido you will find paintings, sculptures, and a wide variety of art. And La Mariscal is the best location for galleries and antique shops.
UP IN THE CLOUD FORESTS! Just a short one hour trip from Quito is where you can enjoy activities on farms and rural areas in the wilderness of the Andes: hot springs, horseback riding, hiking, mountaineering, ecotourism and more. In the Northwest area, you will discover the beauty and richness of the Cloud Forest, a paradise for bird watching with more than 500 species, including quindes or hummingbirds and a wide variety of gorgeous orchids.
CLOSE TO EVERYTHING Quito is the gateway to all the amazing experiences in Ecuador: Pacific Coast beaches, fishing villages and wonderful cuisine; the Andes with its Avenue of the Volcanoes that dazzled the early German explorer Humboldt; Amazon and all its green and extraordinary magic that is home to an ancient civilization; the unique Galapagos Islands that showcases to the world the evolution of species and where Darwin shaped his famous scientific theory. Quito is your perfect starting point.
