Africa Gala Ceremony 2009

Welcome President of the World Travel Awards Africa Ceremony 2009 Dear Travel Friends, We are delighted to return to the ICC Durban and the beautiful Kingdom Zulu for the second successive year to host our World Travel Awards 2009 Africa Ceremony. In the twelve months since our last visit, the progress South Africa has made towards hosting FIFA 2010 has been nothing short of phenomenal. Now you can truly see that the nation is ready to welcome the world. Football fever is also helping South Africa navigate through the hurricane of the global downturn. Tourism arrivals rose 5.5 percent last year – an incredible performance given that the global tourism economy contracted 1.3 percent over the same period. This year, our industry is under no illusions will be a time for enforcing widespread strategic re-evaluations and making tough decisions, both globally as well as here in Africa. Yet these turbulent times are also being welcomed by true leaders as an opportunity to rise above the parapet by turning adversity into opportunity. And tonight’s winners all share this vision, entrepreneurial spirit and determination to succeed. Winning a World Travel Award is the ultimate travel accolade. The endorsement of over 170,000 voting travel professionals will demonstrate to both the travel industry and the travel consumer that your brand stands in a class of its very own.

This evening you will also be invited to take part in a special live vote to determine the brand that you think has contributed most to Africa’s travel industry over the past 12 months. The gala ceremony will culminate in the announcement of the winner of our inaugural Prix D’Or Africa. Congratulations to all award winners and also to those who have made this evening possible, in particular our host, ICC Durban, as well as our media partner BBC World News and Breaking Travel News. Thank you all for being here with us on this very special occasion. We wish tonight’s nominees the very best of luck, and the winners are cordially invited to join us in Jamaica this October for the World Travel Awards Grand Final. Sincerely yours,

Graham E. Cooke President and Founder World Travel Awards

Welcome Durban Tourism Africa Ceremony 2009

Sanibonani, It is appropriate that the World Travel Awards, one of the most prestigious honours in global tourism, chose to host their event in the city of Durban – for we both share a common goal and that is to strive towards new boundaries in fulfilling customer expectations. The customer experience goes way beyond good service, and extends to every facet of the tourism experience in a destination, from the moment of arrival until the final goodbye. Within the context of global tourism, cities in South Africa are fast learning to provide great experiences that exceed expectations, a learning curve necessitated by competition and by the need to catch up from years of isolation from world best practice during the apartheid years. We are learning fast, and as a city, we have hosted major international events from sport to conferences with the success that comes from highly motivated, dedicated teams of people with a common goal – to deliver the best.

Our biggest challenge of all will, of course, be the soccer World Cup, next year in 2010. The experience of making it happen in the slang of everyday South African speech is best summarised by the words “we’ll make a plan” - but you can be sure that it is a very well thought out and executed plan. It is all coming together; the iconic new soccer stadium with its symbolic arch crossing our deep blue skies, training and service excellence programs designed to exceed the best and deliver a great event that will leave a legacy for all South Africans. Durban salutes the goals and mission of the World Travel Awards and joins in celebrating the winners as well as all the entrants who strive to be the best. Sincerely yours,

Perry Moodley Acting CEO Durban Tourism

Welcome ICC Durban Africa Ceremony 2009

Welcome to the ICC Durban, welcome to Durban, and welcome to World Travel Awards 2009. Thank you for visiting our city and province, where delegates are exposed to a variety of authentic cultural experiences whilst enjoying the luxury and efficiency of a superior venue. We are honoured and privileged to once again be part of this event. The World Travel Awards celebrate achievements in all sectors of the travel industry and are regarded as the best endorsement that any travel product could receive. As the ICC Durban we are proud of our association with the World Travel Awards. Coinciding with Indaba, one of the top three destination exhibitions on the tourism calendar, the World Travel Awards are a showcase of what Africa has to offer the global traveller. We trust that the event will also afford you further opportunities for developing networks and relationships in the industry.

The ICC Durban extends its best wishes to all nominees of the World Travel Awards. We thank the industry for the concerted effort in growing this event and look forward to hosting you next year.

Sincerely yours,

Miller M Matola CEO, ICC Durban

World Travel Awards Inaugural Prix D'Or Africa Ceremony 2009 World Travel Awards will tonight unveil the winner of the inaugural Prix D’Or. The World Travel Awards Prix D’Or will be presented to the tourism brand or product that has contributed most to the development of the region’s travel industry over the last 12 months. Both the travel trade and consumers in the region were offered the opportunity to nominate who they think should receive the highly-prestigious award. A shortlist of the highest-ranking nominees will be showcased in front of tonight’s audience. You – the region’s travel industry elite – will then be invited to cast your vote for the overall winner.

The presentation of the World Travel Awards Prix D’Or will be the highlight of the World Travel Awards Africa Ceremony, heralded as the “Oscars of the travel industry” The inaugural overall winner will demonstrate to the travel and tourism industry and world’s media what it truly takes to make a positive difference and will act as the ultimate benchmark to which all others will aspire.

Travel industry's equivalent to the Oscars...” Wall Street Journal

Africa Regional Report by Breaking Travel News

With the hurricane of the financial meltdown that toppled some of Wall Street’s greatest names now sweeping across the world, how is Africa’s travel and tourism industry bearing up? Breaking Travel News investigates

Despite the global downturn, South Africa remains cautiously optimistic it is on track to hit its target of 10 million visitors next year. The FIFA World Cup 2010 will help boost visitor numbers from just over 9.5m in 2008 to top the 10 million mark by year end, according to tourism officials.

the 2010 FIFA World Cup will boost arrivals figures and will be a boon to the South African industry during a time when the global industry is sure to feel the pinch of continuing economic turbulence,” said Lebohang Mokhesi, country manager UK for South African Tourism.

Visitors from regional markets helped the country record a 5.5% increase in arrivals last year compared to the year before. However, there was a 2.5% fall in foreign visitor numbers in the second half of the year. Numbers fell from almost half a million to 485,000 in the last six months of 2007 compared to the same period in 2008.

Mokhesi said there had been “unprecedented demand” for World Cup tickets and predicted that many South Africans would choose to holiday domestically this year.

“The British Lions tour to South Africa, the Confederations Cup in June and, of course,

www.breakingtravelnews.com

Neighbouring Zimbabwe is also hoping for a boost in tourist numbers following a lift in travel restrictions to the country. Travel warnings from the US, German and Japanese governments were all lifted this month and other countries are expected to

follow suit. Tour operators and safari lodges are hoping that the move will lead to an increase in tourist numbers, which were the lowest on record in 2008, according to Tourism Minister Walter Mzembi. “2008 was the worst year in tourism arrivals,” he said. “We have not finished compiling the final statistics but [preliminary figures show] arrivals declined by 22 percent.” In Kenya, the riots that followed last year’s elections severely affected inbound tourism with a drop in visitor numbers at one point last February of almost 90%. Kenya ended the year 30.5% down on the year before from just over one million to 729,000.

However, a number of factors should help boost visitor numbers, not least the ‘Obama’ effect which is difficult to quantify but has cast a positive spotlight on his Kenyan roots. More practically, Delta Airlines will become the first US airline to operate a service from the US to Africa when it launches Atlanta via Dakar (Senegal) to Nairobi on June 3. And, the Kenya government has reduced visa fees for under-16s in a bid to boost demand for family travel. Tourism minister Najib Balala said: “With the above stimulus package among other measures we expect tourism will grow at between 10-15% in 2009 despite the global financial crisis.” Egypt is also expecting a good year for tourism despite a number of reports to the contrary. Visitor numbers dipped by 2.8% at the end of last year, but were offset by year to date growth to November of an 18% increase compared to last year with total figures for 2008 estimated at 12.9million. And tourism minister Zoheir Garranah predicts the country will hit 14 million in 2010/2011. He claims hotel occupancy rates along the so-called Red Sea Riviera, which includes Sharm El Sheikh and Hurgadah, were running at an average of 70% at the end of last year, and closer to 80% in Cairo. However, things have changed markedly since the start of the year according to a report by EFG-Hermes, a Cairo-based investment bank. The report states arrivals will fall by almost a fifth this year with the main declines coming from Western Europe and Russia – Egypt’s biggest source market. The resort areas have been worse affected with hotel occupancy now standing at less than half, battered by a number of factors including a strong currency and the overall global financial meltdown. Despite this, the government is pressing ahead to develop Egypt’s Mediterranean coastline and add a total of 50,000 hotels rooms in the next few years. Morocco continues to post strong tourism figures despite the world economic downturn. Tourist arrivals hit 6.7m in the 10 months to October 2008, a 6% yearon-year increase, and are predicted to increase by a further 7% this year to almost 8m according to the tourism ministry.

However the government is mindful that overseas visitor numbers particularly from its two key source markets – France and Spain – will fall which is why it is investing MAD50m in boosting domestic tourism this year. It also remains committed to attract 10m visitors by next year and create 160,000 new beds to bring the total to 230,000. It is developing Morocco’s south west coast as part of its Vision 2010 project through the creation of six new mega resorts with investment from Dubai-based Nakheel and Kerzner International. According to The World Travel and Tourism Council, Tunisia’s income from tourism is predicted to drop slightly over the next ten years from 16.7% of GDP to 16.3%, or US$14.11m. However, Tunisia is one of the most developed of the North African countries in terms of tourism and the longterm outlook for the country in terms of tourist numbers is bright despite the downturn as the country diversifies into cultural, heritage and spa breaks and the government spends money on improving infrastructure. Tunisia’s cruise tourism is also expected to grow with the expansion of the port of La Goulette which will increase capacity by 70% by 2010. The country will also benefit from foreign investment with a new air route from Dubai-based Emirates to the capital launching shortly and the first Radisson Hotel set to open. In 2007 visitor numbers hit 6.7 million – a 3% growth on 2006; and initial figures show it reached 8m last year. Tourism in Libya is still in its infancy, but one that has given a boost since the country has become rehabilitated in the world’s eyes. There are currently 13,000 hotel rooms in the country; the government has plans to increase this to 50,000. The latest visitor figures are for 2007, when the country had 180,000 arrivals. A number of UK-based tour operators including Audley Travel and ResponsibleTravel.com have upped their programmes to Libya, driven by a renewed interest in its five Unesco Heritage sites and miles of unspoilt Mediterranean coastline.

2009... History in the making World Travel Awards

As well as addressing the challenges that a deteriorating world economy will bring to the travel and tourism industry, the key message in the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer is that times of crisis often lead to the biggest opportunities. The industry is under no illusions that the course of 2009 will enforce wide-scale strategic re-thinks and many tough decisions will have to be made. But what is just as certain is that the industry is a highly-resilient sector and will eventually return to strong growth. These challenging economic times will only succeed in separating those companies who with fortitude and vision remain unbowed in their commitment to excellence from those companies complacent or average.

Since 1993, “the Oscars of the travel industry” has stood unrivalled in impartially recognising and rewarding those who set the standards across all sectors of travel and tourism. This year, all eyes will be on Durban and the World Travel Awards Africa Ceremony. Tonight’s winners will show what it truly takes to make a difference and will act as beacons of hope for the rest of the industry. History will prove that 2009’s World Travel Awards Winners will be those companies that best navigate economic fluctuations and will emerge from these challenging times with exponential growth, augmented market share and galvanised reputations.

Through an unswerving commitment to excellence, through recognising examples of best practice and through collective learning and solidarity, these challenging times present us with the opportunity to re-enforce the overall industry infrastructure. 2009 is a year of positive action for everyone involved in the travel and tourism industry. We hope that World Travel Awards can play its part in helping the region to be in the best possible shape for the upturn.

There has never been a more important year for positive action. Now is the time for individuals to step forward and demonstrate what can be done to make a difference.

BONEY M. original Maizie Williams The 1970s saw the birth of Disco - 100% freaking, boogying, hustling, bumping, busstopping, pure disco dancing. It started in the mid-70s and continued right through into the 80s. One of the biggest groups to stand out and make their mark was BONEY M. Their career was comet-like in that they seemed to blast out of nowhere. Suddenly every discotheque around the world played Boney M and every TV show wanting to be hip had to have this stunning-looking and fabulous-sounding foursome from the Caribbean. Their sound - a mix of reggae, disco, funk, gospel, soul and rock - hit the charts around the world in a flash. Within moments, it seemed, everyone knew the Boney M. name and music, and their onward progress would maintain its star-studded track through our consciousness, day and night for over ten years, with an endless stream of unforgettable, sensational hits. Maizie Williams was with Boney M. from the very beginning and to this day is recreating those unique special moments live with her own band of musicians.
