Welcome President of the World Travel Awards Asia & Australasia Ceremony 2011 When we book holidays we aim for paradise on every front: magnificent attractions, rich culture, world-class beaches and perfect weather. Thailand offers this magic mix, and I am deeply honoured that World Travel Awards is hosting its Asia & Australasia Ceremony 2011 in this paradise corner of South East Asia. Thailand, in many ways, is a barometer for the changes sweeping across the continent of Asia. Whilst the traditional economic powerhouses of Europe and North America struggle to shake off the recession, growth in international arrivals is forecast at 5 percent for 2011, according to the UNWTO. This surge is being driven by intra-Asia travel – emerging markets such as India, China and Malaysia and their burgeoning middle classes discovering an insatiable appetite for travel. We expect this growth to continue for at least the next decade, making the future very bright indeed for the luxury hospitality sector. This year is already shaping up to be the most ambitious yet in the 18-year history of World Travel Awards. I am pleased to report that the number of organisations nominated for the “Oscars of the Travel Industry has risen 13 per cent year-on-year.

Meanwhile the number of voters is up 11 percent year-on-year, driven by a surge in consumer voting. This reflects how the public now rely increasingly on World Travel Awards as their gold seal of travel excellence. Winning a World Travel Award is the ultimate travel accolade, with the endorsement of over 213,000 voting travel professionals demonstrating to both the travel industry and the travel consumer that your brand stands in a class of its very own. I wish to extend a special thank you to our host, the incredible Dusit Thani Bangkok, as well as our event partners WeClickMedia, and media partners eTurboNews, TravelDailyNews, Travtalk and Breaking Travel News. Honouring and promoting excellence and innovation in travel and tourism are why we are gathered all here. Thank you for joining us on this very special occasion, and congratulations for your incredible achievements.

Spotlight on

Asia & Australasia Asia & Australasia was the first region to show signs of recovery from the global economic downturn of 2008/09, with tourism boosted by the economic strength of emerging Chinese and resilient Australian markets.

In total the region – stretching from Iran in the east, through India, Thailand and Hong Kong to New Zealand and Fiji in the west – accounted for 22 per cent of the global tourism industry last year, according to figures from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). More than 200 million international arrivals touched down during 2010 – some 24 million more than in 2009 and 20 million above the 2008 pre-crisis peak – generating $249 billion in revenue – or $1,220 per person. Truly staggering figures.

8

As is to be expected China was the regional superpower, welcoming 56 million guests last year. However, other established destinations – including Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Macau – all welcomed over ten million visitors.

during a devastating tsunami off the coast of Japan in March.

Following the culmination of a decadeslong civil war, Sri Lanka also saw a surge in tourism visitors – with nearly 50 per cent more guests last year than in 2009.

In the skies over Asia

But there have also been challenges. Nearly 200 people lost their lives in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand, in February this year, while thousands more were killed

However, neither has derailed the tremendous rate of growth

Malaysia Airlines – recognised last year as Asia’s Leading Airline by the World Travel Awards – has continued to go from strengthto-strength, with membership of the oneworld Alliance secured and over $800 million of aircraft ordered from Boeing in the past few months alone.

With new chairman, Tan Sri Md Nor Yusof, also now in place, and a share swap with AirAsia signed to the benefit of both parties, Malaysia Airlines is well positioned to take advantage of the booming tourism sector in the region. In Japan, All Nippon Airways is – finally – preparing to launch its Boeing 787 Dreamliner programme after a number of delays. ANA confirmed earlier this year the new aircraft will be based at Narita International Airport in Tokyo with Hong Kong expecting to receive the inaugural commercial flight in October. “We intend to use the Dreamliner to expand our business, particularly our international routes,” said ANA senior executive vice president, Mitsuo Morimoto. “We are aiming to increase our revenues from international operations significantly and the 787 will play an instrumental role in this.” Korea Air – which took the title of Asia’s Leading Airline First Class in 2010 – is also celebrating a new era following the launch of its first Airbus A380. The inaugural flight took off in June from Incheon International Airport in Seoul bound for Tokyo baring the codename KE380 to mark the historic milestone in the airline’s history. Korean Air has ordered ten A380 aircraft, with the first five to be delivered by the end of 2011 and the remaining five by 2014.

On the ground Asia's Leading Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, has also wasted no time in cementing its position at the top of its sector, ordering its tenth ship in ten years from the Fincantieri Ship Yard. When completed in October 2014 the new ship will have a gross tonnage of 132,500 and accommodate 4,928 guests in 1,854 cabins. “This new order, the tenth in ten years, not only consolidates the link between our company and Fincantieri, but also demonstrates the leadership achieved by Costa Cruises in Asia and its ability to drive the cruise business and tourism in general,” said Pier Luigi Foschi, chairman Costa Crociere. Back on dry land, Raffles Group – which presently comprises nine luxurious properties around the world – is currently preparing for new openings in the Maldives, Indonesia, the Philippines, China and Turkey over the next two years. Perhaps the most exciting is the Raffles Makati which will be situated in the heart of the Philippines’ fastest growing cosmopolitan centre, Makati City. The property will be a true oasis in the most stunning tower ever built. The hotel will have just 30 suites, with elegant restaurants and a fresh perspective on the famous “Long Bar” at Raffles Hotel Singapore. A comprehensive rebranding exercise at Raffles is also being led by Diana Banks, who was appointed a vice president for sales & marketing in February this year.

Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore, has been enjoying a strong year after the destination was name Asia’s Leading New Resort in 2010. Universal Studios Singapore opened in April to bolster an already stellar selection of attractions, while the opening of both the new Equarius Hotel and Marine Life Park in 2012 is sure to keep guests coming back for more.

Luxury Asia Thailand’s Six Senses Resorts & Spas has recently seen Yao Noi, Phuket, reopen after a month of renovation. This follows the launch of Six Senses Laamu, the only resort on the virtually uncharted Laamu Atoll, earlier this year. Both developments will have been noted by World Travel Awards voters as the group seeks to maintain its title of Asia’s Leading Resort Brand. Finally, our host this evening, Dusit Thani Bangkok, will be seeking its taste of success following victories for Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket in a number of categories last year. The sister property took the awards for Thailand's Leading Beach Resort, Thailand's Leading Golf Resort and Thailand's Leading Spa Resort in an unprecedented run of success in 2010 – with many now wondering if Dusit Thani Bangkok can emulate these achievements tonight…

World Travel Awards “The Oscars of the Travel Industry” Since its inception in 1993, World Travel Awards has been recognising and rewarding those organisations that have made the greatest contribution to the global travel and tourism industry. With voting growing year on year – over 213,000 travel professionals are now registered to vote – World Travel Awards continues to build its reputation as the ‘Oscars of the travel industry’. Cooke, Founder & President, World Travel Awards, said: “World Travel Awards is a unique benchmark for industry quality and business excellence in every region and sector.” “The increase in registered voters, despite a global recession, demonstrates the vital role of performance delivery in a challenging and highly competitive marketplace,” he added. For the tourism trade, winning a World Travel Award is more than an award – it is an endorsement from the thousands of professionals from around the globe, as well as a gold seal to the consumer of travel excellence guaranteed.

World Island Awards Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin, Germany 6 March 2012

WTA_Asia&Australasia_Prog_v3_Layout 1 14/09/2011 15:19 Page 84

World’s first ceremony to promote Island Tourism World Travel Awards has unveiled a new awards programme to celebrate and reward luxury tourism to island nations. World Islands Awards will take place on the eve on ITB Berlin 2012, with Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority signed as the official partner. It is the only event of its kind dedicated to recognising Island Tourism around the world.

84

Through this partnership, Mauritius will spearhead the drive for the promotion of Island Tourism worldwide, as well as ensuring that it remains at the forefront of the luxury tourism map. The paradise island is currently enjoying a thriving tourism economy under the leadership of Minister of Tourism, HE Nandcoomar Bodha, and Dr Karl Mootoosamy, Director, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority.

The inaugural ceremony will take place at Hotel Adlon Kempinski, Berlin’s most exclusive five-star hotel, on 6 March 2012.

Dr Karl Mootoosamy, Director, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, said: “Our new partnership with World Island Awards will serve as an excellent vehicle to promote the core values of Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority – in particular our emphasis on people, the environment and the capacity to ensure customer satisfaction.”

The two-year agreement comes hot on the heels of Mauritius being named one of the coolest destinations for 2011 by Futurebrand and British Airways, and being voted “World’s Leading Island Destination” at the 2010 World Travel Awards.

The Indian Ocean nation – which is best known for its azure waters, white beaches and luxury spas – will also showcase itself as a world-class destination to travel professionals and media from around the world.

Graham Cooke, Founder, World Island Awards said: “On behalf of World Island Awards, I am delighted to have Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority as our partner. “This nation typifies luxury tourism at its finest, and serves a benchmark for how island nations can travel and tourism for social and economic betterment.” The awards will serve to reward excellence across all areas of tourism of the world’s island nations. Categories will include: “World’s Leading Island Resort”, “Asia’s Leading Island Resort” and “World’s Leading Island Destination”. Over the past thirty years, Mauritius has expanded its luxury tourism sector. The travel and tourism sector has become more vital than ever to the nation’s economy due to declining sugar prices and economic infeasibility of textile production. Limited space for tourism means that Mauritius continues to promote only elite and specialist tourism, while budget travel is not encouraged.
