Way out Oeste Portugal’s rising new star Europe Ceremony 2009

The Algarve’s Mediterranean climate and glorious beaches has long made it Portugal’s most popular tourism region. But the country also has a rapidly rising star: the Oeste – boasting miles of glorious untouched beaches, incredible golf, and a rich medieval Portuguese culture. History is to hand, including nearby Peniche, a pretty and unspoilt ancient fishing port, known for the sprawling landmark fortress overlooking its harbour, as well as some of Portugal’s finest surfing. But while the days are hot, the area around Praia D’El Rey is prized by sunbathers for its empty, pristine beaches, especially those near Baleal, a small island village five minutes from the resort. Almost every town near Praia D’El Rey can trace its history back to the 12th century but the most famous is Óbidos, 15 minutes from the resort but a whole world away. Its untouched town centre is medieval in feel and many of its buildings date back to the time of the Conquests, their whitewashed and ochre walls and blue-framed windows and doors crying out to be photographed. In the spotlight: Stuart Swycher, Owner and President of the Resort, Praia D'El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort Stuart Swycher is one of the hospitality industry’s sharpest talents with an uncanny ability to spot a potential development and make it happen. As chairman of Beltico Group, he developed Praia D’El Rey. What inspired you to build Praia D’El Rey? SS: I first came across Praia D’El Rey in the late 1980s. Back then there were just a few houses near the sea, no golf course and it was a good 90 minutes from Lisbon. But all I could see were the miles of sandy beaches, the natural dunes and the long hours of sunshine. I could imagine that others, like me, would want to spend time in this place. What originally attracted you to the Oeste region? SS: I had been to the Algarve often during the 1980s, but found it overdeveloped and expensive. In the Oeste region, especially around Obidos, I could see the potential to create a really integrated resort that would appeal to visitors, and it was obvious in the early 1990s that the region would benefit massively from the new motorway that was being built. Which aspects of the resort are you most proud of and why? SS: I am particularly proud that Praia D’El Rey has set the bench mark for professional tourism development in the Oeste region. We opened the Praia D’El Rey golf course in 1997 and the Marriott hotel in 2003 and we have created hundreds of jobs in the local community. I am also especially proud of the professionalism and high standards we maintain throughout the resort. How would you like the resort to evolve? SS: Praia D’El Rey Golf & Beach Resort is almost complete – we have a few more golf villas and beach houses to sell, but the resort is already very mature with a healthy resales market and the golf course and hotel are running very successfully. I am looking forward to beginning work on Falesia D’El Rey, a 230-hectare beachfront site very near Praia D’El Rey, where we want to create another world-class golf course, two boutique hotels and some spectacular homes. What is your vision/definition of the ultimate resort? SS: For me, it is “barefoot luxury”. Breaking Travel News World Report: Europe – ready for rebound?

One year on from the collapse of Lehman Brothers, how are Europe’s blue-chip travel and tourism players tackling the downturn? It has been just over a year since the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the world’s slide into recession. The effect on tourism across Europe has been severe, with business travel reined in, holidaymakers opting to stay at home and lucrative international markets drying up. It is only now that the various industry sectors appeared to have plateaued and in some cases are reporting a return to growth.

Airlines As business travellers stayed away from the front of the plane, premium traffic plummeted at the start of this year, both intra-Europe and on transatlantic routes. However, by September the sharp drops appeared to have levelled out. British Airways’ non-premium traffic appeared to have turned the corner, with a 0.7% increase compared to last year. However, premium traffic still continued to fall, by 7.9% compared to September 2008. Load factors also increased, by 2.4 points to 81.3%. The transatlantic routes continued to be

tricky for airlines to turn a profit and after a much-trumpeted launch in 2008, BA’s subsidiary OpenSkies was forced to pull its loss-making Amsterdam-New York service. By contrast, the airline defied all the naysayers and launched its all-business London City to JFK service in late September. BA also launched a number of new leisure routes from Gatwick and a business route from Heathrow to Las Vegas in October. However, its attempts to form a merger with American Airlines and Iberia were once again blocked by the EU. There was just one high-profile airline collapse in Europe this year, SkyEurope, a Slovakia-based low cost carrier, which at its peak flew to 38 cities in 19 European countries. It originally sought bankruptcy protection in June, but limped on after finding new funding, before ceasing operations suddenly and without warning on September 1. Alitalia meanwhile had yet another reprieve at the start of the year when Air France-KLM stepped in to buy 25% of the company for €323 million. It then merged with Air One the next day and relaunched.

Lufthansa continued its buying spree, with the purchase of both bmi and Austrian Airlines in September.

Hotels Hotels suffered a particularly tough start to the year, particularly at the top end of the market. The trend was predicted at the start of the year with a report commissioned by Amadeus and conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit which predicted a “new age of austerity” was dawning with travellers taking fewer, shorter and cheaper business trips. As corporate budgets were frozen or slashed many five star properties were taken off corporate travel policies, prompting them to try and get themselves re-categorised as four star hotels. Many were also forced to close floors to save money as occupancy levels sunk to new lows. The budget brands benefited from this downgrading, in particular Premier Inn, which announced it was spending £125m on building four new hotels at London’s main airports from Autumn 2011, two at Heathrow, one at Gatwick and one at Stansted, creating a total of 1,570

Like most other destinations in the Eurozone, Portugal has also suffered from the devaluation of the sterling against the Euro in 2009. Taking into account that 2008 was Portugal’s strongest year ever in terms of tourism, it is inevitable that figures for 2009 will be down. The Portuguese tourism industry is in a strong position to weather the recession. Portugal has been a key destination for the British travel industry for many years now. Excellent links to and from the UK, good travel deals and great weather all year round are crucial factors that will keep Brits visiting our country despite challenging economic conditions.

new rooms. Overall, hotels worldwide like airlines, appeared to have weathered the worst of the storm and were beginning to see some signs of pick up in September. A report by Deloitte predicted there will be a slowdown in the rate of decline with a pick up in the last three months of next year.

Car rental In the past 12 months, almost 70% of European drivers have changed the way they drive, as well as 60% using their car less often, especially for short distances, according to the Europcar Transportation & Mobility Observatory. The French and Portuguese have changed their driving habits the most, at approximately 94% compared with 90% for Europeans as a whole. In fact, some 40% of European drivers are considering doing away with their household car – more than double the number (18%) who said they were considering that in the Observatory’s 2008 edition. As was the case last year, the primary reason behind such a radical move remains the cost of ownership: 83% of respondents said they could be willing to do without a car

for financial reasons (up from 66% in 2008), compared with 48% for environmental considerations. So what alternative means of transportation would Europeans use if they don’t drive their cars? The survey reveals that in terms of mobility strategies, 80% of respondents would first turn to public transportation, followed by walking and cycling. For individual motorized transportation, car rental was the leading alternative at 53% - and even 60% in France and Spain - followed by carpooling (48%), and two-wheeled motor vehicles (35%). “We launched our Observatory last year to detect trends and anticipate needs in transportation and mobility across Europe,” noted Jehan de Thé, Europcar Global Marketing Director. “It has proven to be a timely decision. As the second edition shows, the economic crisis has prompted Europeans to take stock of their real mobility requirements and the various options available to meet them. European drivers have already changed their approach significantly and are giving serious consideration to still more changes.”

Bobby Davro The impressionist and comedian Bobby Davro has been one of the UK's undisputed stars of Saturday-night television for more than a decade. Bobby Davro made his TV debut in 1981, but his major breakthrough came with an appearance in LIVE AT HER MAJESTY’S IN 1983. This led to his own Saturday night series BOBBY DAVRO ON THE BOX, BOBBY’S SKETCH PAD, TV WEEKLY, which immediately topped the ratings for six consecutive years. In 1991 Bobby moved to the BBC and made three series, PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE, ROCK WITH LAUGHTER and RUN THE RISK. In 1997 Bobby hosted for Yorkshire Television’s WINNER TAKES ALL for 65 programmes. Bobby recorded the No 1 Hit by the proclaimers ‘for comic relief with Peter Kay. Bobby will be hitting the screens this October in the UK's top rating TV series Eastenders’ playing lovable rogue ‘Vinnie Monks’.

George McCrae George McCrae was the founder of The Miami Sound Machine and indeed most probably the first disco dance performer of all time when he hit the charts in 1974 with the worldwide No. 1 hit single “ROCK YOUR BABY”. This record still holds the world record for being No. 1 in no less than 82 countries throughout the world, selling an impressive 52 million copies worldwide, making it one of the highest grossing single releases in pop history. This disco hurricane from Florida went on to have further top ten hits with “I CAN’T LEAVE YOU ALONE” and “IT’S BEEN SO LONG”. George McCrae is still the king when it comes to the soul side of disco and is probably one of the best artistes from this era that you can still book today.

Steve Womack In January 2007, at the age of fifty, Steve Womack completed 31 years as a professional entertainer. In that time he has been a singer, musician, songwriter, actor, after dinner speaker and comedian. His current performances reflect the whole story. Steve is now firmly established as one of the UK's finest entertainers. Steve was voted winning comedian in Central TV’s New Faces Grand Final. This was followed by a 13 week series of ‘Corrigan and Womack’ (teaming up with London comedienne, Bernadine Corrigan) on Sky TV and the first series of ‘A Small Portion of Womack’ for BBC Radio 2.
