With its world class facilities, developed infrastructure, booming economies and highly competitive aviation and hospitality sectors, the Middle East has easily overcome recent travails to once again be considered the most innovative tourism market in the world.
As Breaking Travel News returns to the Middle East ahead of the annual World Travel Awards Gala Ceremony, we are greeted with a largely positive landscape. The region is still abuzz with new developments and grand plans with our hosts here in Dubai among those celebrating. Reporting a ten per cent increase in the number of hotel guests in 2011, compared to the previous year, the emirate recorded a total of 9.3 million tourists last year. The average length of stay also rose 12 per cent to 3.6 days, while revenue grew by 20 per cent to Dh16 billion, according to figures from the Dubai Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing.
A similar picture emerges in the neighbouring Abu Dhabi, which broke a host of records in 2011. Some 2,111,611 people stayed in the emirate’s hotels last year – beating the stretch target of two million by 6.5 per cent, or over 100,000 guests. The emirate has also been selected to host the Routes 18th World Route Development Forum later this year, with the 2013 World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit to follow next year. In Qatar, preparations are well underway for the FIFA 2012 World Cup. A host of new infrastructure developments – including the Qatar National Convention Centre – are already open, while the New Doha International Airport will reposition the
destination as a leading business hub when it opens later this year. Saudi Arabia has also been punching above its weight in terms of construction, with some $66 billion of contracts awarded in 2011, according to the latest research from Meed Insight, a six per cent increase on the previous year. This means Saudi is now by far the largest projects market in the region, worth almost as much as the other five GCC states combined. “For most companies and professionals involved in the region, the sheer size and potential of the Saudi Arabia market makes it the number one opportunity in the region,” said Ed James, head of MEED Insight.

Dubai is an emerging cruise destination in the Middle East
Aviation Insider In the skies over the Middle East, three regional players – Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways and Emirates – are all generating a tremendous amount of attention. Just this month Etihad continued its industry leading growth, reporting a 28 per cent rise in revenue to US$ 989 million in the first quarter, compared to the previous year. Passenger numbers at the airline also soared by 500,000 to 2.4 million, while recent partnerships – with China Eastern Airlines, Air Seychelles and airberlin – are likely to see this growth sustained as we move through 2012. Etihad Airways chief executive officer, James Hogan, said: “Despite the tough economic times we believe our business model of organic network growth combined with codeshare partnerships and strategic equity investments will enable us to continue to prosper and ensure sustainable profitability.” Rival carrier Qatar Airways has also been generating headlines, adding 14 new routes to its international network during 2012. The carrier also signed a $6.5 billion deal with Airbus in late 2011, which will see the European manufacturer deliver 50 A320neo aircraft and five additional A380s over the next few years. Emirates – with a fleet of 169 aircraft - now flies to 122 destinations, having recently launched Dallas, Lusaka and Harare and Seattle. Flights to Ho Chi Minh City get underway from June 4th and Barcelona joins the Emirates’ network on July 3rd. Emirates

will also soon benefit from the opening of the new Concourse 3 at Dubai International Airport, with the facility dedicated to its airbus A380 operations.
Hotel Golden Age In the accommodation sector, the Middle East is expected to utilise its world-class infrastructure and facilities and excellent geographic location to bolster is position on the world stage. The region can only grow as one of the world’s most competitive landscapes over the next few years offering value tourism and conference experiences to a worldwide customer base. Many of the hotels here in the Middle East are already recognised as the best in the world by the World Travel Awards. Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa was last year recognised as the World’s Leading Family Resort, prompting its selection as this evening’s host, while Grosvenor House Dubai took the title of World’s Leading Business Hotel and walked away with the trophy for World’s Leading Presidential Suite.
