Spotlight: Turks & Caicos Islands Partner - World Ceremony 2nd December 2008

The Turks and Caicos consist of 40 different islands and cays, only 8 of which are inhabited. The islands of the Turks and Caicos are almost as diverse as its people. From the main tourist centre of Providenciales to the quiet and tranquil islands of North and Middle Caicos to the historic Capital Island of Grand Turk; each one offers a different experience

16

and a unique character but all offer year round great climate, beaches and underwater activities.

This is probably why most of the visitors come back to the Turks and Caicos on a regular basis.

The only true way to experience the Turks and Caicos Islands is to experience each island in the entire chain.

Most of the islands are only about 10 to 25 minutes by air from Provo and most can be reached by boat, too. There

W O R L D T R AV E L AWA R D S

are also regular ferries from North to Middle Caicos. Providenciales is the most well known of the Turks and Caicos Islands and is the centre of the tourism industry with a wide range of hotels, restaurants, attractions and facilities.

green woodlands, the biggest cave network in the Caribbean on Middle Caicos, cottage pond and flamingo pond in North Caicos and a vast range of plant life and birdlife. North Caicos is also an up and coming resort destination with several new projects under development.

South Caicos is the centre for fishing, with lobster and conch exported from the islands, the

historic Cockburn harbour and the natural phenomenon of the boiling hole. This small yet friendly island offers many secluded beaches with awe inspiring views of the turquoise waters and surrounding islands. Parrot Cay and Pine Cay are privately owned islands and are home to the most exclusive resorts Parrot Cay Resort and Spa and the Meridian Club.

There is also development underway in previously uninhabited West Caicos (future home of a Ritz Carlton hotel and community), Ambergris Cay (site of the exclusive Turks and Caicos Sporting Club), and Dellis Cay (where a major lifestyle resort to be run by The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has just been announced).

In time, everyone will discover the beauty of Turks & Caicos. But for now, this magnificent paradise still remains the last of the Caribbean’s unspoiled islands. The incomparable beaches. Quaint exclusive boutique properties. And the most incredible scuba diving in the world. If you’ve got the urge to take your family and loved ones on a vacation they’ll never forget, go to Turks & Caicos. Fast. Before everyone else on the planet does.

News from Rio de Janeiro Rio de Janeiro is the city most visited by the international tourist – about one third of all who come to Brazil visit Rio. This can be attributed to two main characteristics – among so many others – its breathtaking natural beauty and the hospitality of its people. To delight the visitor even more, and of course those who live here, the city is always on the move, constantly investing in its infrastructure for leisure and services and its program of cultural and other events.

CULTURE “Marvelous Music City,” Rio de Janeiro’s newest attraction In keeping with the trend of all major world cities, Rio is coming center stage to feature famous architects and their creations in its newest landmarks. Once completed, Rio’s new venture, Music City, will be the largest concert and opera hall in Latin America. Opening date: December 2008. Rio’s City Hall commissioned famous French architect Christian de Portzamparc to design Music City, which is being built in an area of over 1 million square feet in Barra da Tijuca – Rio’s newest growth area. City Hall’s investment will give Music City the most advanced technology in electrical, acoustic and visual equipment, large and modern auditoriums and stages with multimedia facilities comparable to those of the Sydney Opera House or Disney’s Music Hall in Los Angeles. SAMBA CITY – Carnival all year round!!! Pick your costume and get into the Carnival spirit, parading in a dream come true. www.cidadedosambarj.globo.com Located in the Rio Docklands, "Cidade do Samba" clusters together the costumes workshops and float production centers of the largest Samba Schools in Brazil. This entertainment complex is planned to offer visitors all the grassroots charm and excitement of Carnival throughout the year, enjoying the magic of the festivities that make Rio de Janeiro the world’s carnival capital. World-famous sambas are featured in great shows, starring samba soloists in scanty costumes, swirling “baianas”, graceful standard-

bearers and their prancing escorts! After the show, visitors dress up in real Carnival costumes and dance along to the pounding beat of the drums and percussion instruments, taking part in a real parade, just like the Sambadrome! These are memories to treasure forever… The show will begin on October 23rd, every Thursday night, except on December that the dates will be on December, 4th, 11th and 30th.

SPORT EVENTS FIFA World Cup 2014 Brazil was chosen to host the FIFA World Cup in 2014. Maracanã Stadium – recently refurbished and one of the largest in the world – will most probably be the venue for the final match. Olympic Games 2016 Rio de Janeiro Candidate City After the successful organization of the 2007 Pan-American Games, the city now has more experience and expertise to face this even greater challenge. Some of the justifications for the candidature of the city were as follows: • Olympic values as a pillar of education and social development in a country like Brazil, with a predominately young population; • Reinforce the image of the Olympic Games, which have been fulfilling an important role in the planning and development of all the cities that host the games; • The impact of the Games on Rio would be immense. Bringing the Games to Latin America for the first time, with 400 million inhabitants, signifies launching Olympic values in a continent that is young and full of enthusiasm;

• Adding value to the Olympic symbol thanks to the Pan-American Games, which continues to gain importance for the success of the bid for the Olympic Games. In this Brazil’s capacity is insuperable. Mega-events such as Carnival and other major festivals are innovative, and Brazil’s experience in presentation, diversity and inclusion is invaluable. Imagine, the whole city will be transformed into an Olympic arena to celebrate sport and the Brazilian way of life. www.rio2016.org.br

LEISURE And to end with, we mustn’t forget Rio’s most obvious attributes: our beaches, our parks and our lagoon. The city is investing in infrastructure for services along the beaches, by building new kiosks, which apart from blending in with the landscape, with their design in glass, offer a large variety of good cuisine, plus the comforts of toilets, showers and lockers. Rio is one of the world’s greenest cities, with Tijuca Forest, the largest urban forest in the world, within its borders, and numerous parks, such as Flamengo Park, the Botanical Gardens, Parque Lage, the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon and surrounds, and many others, all with a services infrastructure for the comfort and enjoyment of visitors. Enjoy the diversity that comes together in the “Marvelous City”.
