Greece, Spain and Italy scooped a fistful of honours between them at the World Travel Awards European and Green Awards Ceremony. Lufthansa took the title of Europe’s Leading Airline, NCL Leading Cruise Line and The Westin Dragonara, perched on a private peninsula in Malta, received the Leading Family Resort award. Europe did not fare so well in the Green Awards, however, where the recognition and praise spotlighted the Caribbean, South America, Africa and Asia. The exception was AquaCity, the Slovakian resort in Poprad, where the presentation took place, which walked off with Europe’s Leading Green Hotel and the World’s Leading Green Resort. “This was our first Green Awards and clearly demonstrated that Europe’s mature destinations
such as Spain, France and the UK are dragging their feet over the growing consumer demand for sustainable and more socially aware travel products”, said Graham E. Cooke, founder and President of World Travel Awards. “They have much to learn from the passion and enthusiasm of emerging destinations such as Sri Lanka, for example, which is embracing an ambitious green initiative to become the world’s first carbon neutral destination in the world, with public and private sector working together. Cooke said that he hoped the launch of the first international Green Awards would help to change perceptions and shift a greater emphasis on to the environment.
“As climate change begins to impact, there is likely to be a change in travel flows, perhaps with more short haul, with consumers less inclined to travel long distances”, he said. “This could have a negative affect on the poorest countries where tourism is a life blood. That’s why responsible tourism is one of the greatest challenging facing the international travel and tourism industry right now.” The famous pink and white beaches of the Costa Smeralda on Sardinia’s northern coast in Italy was awarded Europe’s Leading Beach, while the Hilton Villa Igiea Palermo Hotel in Sicily was Europe’s Leading Island Resort and the Forte Village Resort, just outside Cagliari in Sardinia, got Europe’s Leading Resort.
Sea Cloud Cruises, operating luxurious cruises on traditionally rigged sailing ships and European riverboats was awarded the World’s Leading Green Cruise Line while Europcar took the Leading Green Transport Solution Company. The event forms part of a World Travel Awards Grand Tour with regional and sector awards staged throughout the world, ending with a Grand Final at Turks & Caicos in the Caribbean on 2 December 2008.

Slovakia was the only destination in Europe to be cited for Green Awards, with much of the recognition and praise spotlighting the Caribbean, South America, Africa and Asia. Graham Cooke, Founder and President of World Travel Awards said “This was our first Green Awards and clearly demonstrated that Europe’s mature destinations such as Spain, France and the UK are dragging their feet over the growing consumer demand for sustainable and more socially aware travel products. They have much to learn from the passion and enthusiasm of emerging destinations such as Slovakia.” Cooke said that he hoped the launch of the first international Green Awards would help to change perceptions and shift a greater emphasis on to the environment. In his acceptance speech for the two coveted top Green Awards AquaCity’s owner and
CEO emphasised the importance of tourism destinations embracing green issues as part of their business plan. “At AquaCity we’re saving around 27 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere each day by using geothermal water and solar energy to heat and power the resort. This saves millions of euros each year, contributing to our profitability and giving us a competitive, business edge while at the same time saving the planet. Until the tourism industry embraces being green as part of its business plan, instead of simply applying `green wash’ to its marketing, we cannot even begin to achieve sustainable tourism”. Slovakia is Europe’s fastest growing tourist destination and is currently attracting significant investment in its tourist infrastructure, with an 11m euro investment currently underway in the High Tatras to expand the ski facilities in time for winter 2008/9.

The Turks and Caicos consist of 40 different islands and cays, only 8 of which are inhabited. The islands of the Turks and Caicos are almost as diverse as its people. From the main tourist centre of Providenciales to the quiet and tranquil islands of North and Middle Caicos to the historic Capital Island of Grand Turk; each one offers a different experience

and a unique character but all offer year round great climate, beaches and underwater activities.
This is probably why most of the visitors come back to the Turks and Caicos on a regular basis.
The only true way to experience the Turks and Caicos Islands is to experience each island in the entire chain.
Most of the islands are only about 10 to 25 minutes by air from Provo and most can be reached by boat, too. There

are also regular ferries from North to Middle Caicos. Providenciales is the most well known of the Turks and Caicos Islands and is the centre of the tourism industry with a wide range of hotels, restaurants, attractions and facilities.

Dubai keeps on booming and its continued development was underlined and celebrated at the World Travel Awards Middle East Ceremony. Dubai was in winning form on an unforgettable night for travel and tourism. Fittingly, it was against the backdrop of the newly-opened $1.5 billion Atlantis, The Palm, Dubai that the emirate emerged with plenty of awards to display in its trophy cabinets. Dubai now goes forward with confidence to the finals of the World Travel Awards in Turks & Caicos on 2nd December 2008. The awards are coveted worldwide and described by the Wall Street Journal as the ‘Oscars’ of the travel industry. Among the evening guests was HE Sheikh Faisal K.S. Al Qassemi, chairman of the Al Qasimi Group. Making some of the key presentations were Miss World, Zi Lin Zhang of China; and movie and television stars, Maeve Quinlan and Kristy Swanson. Graham E. Cooke, founder and president of World Travel Awards, said: “Not only Dubai but the whole of the Middle East region is a constant signal to everyone in the industry of how bold vision and
innovation, investment and positive responses can make a difference – despite global economic fears. “The region is a supreme example of how to hold your nerve and act short term, when necessary, but always with longer-term benefits and a sound business strategy uppermost.” Dubai’s triumphs ranged through airline to business, building and beach categories. Etihad Airways walked off with the prized Middle East’s Leading Airline; Middle East’s Leading First Class and also Middle East’s Leading Airline Website. “These are the only independent travel and tourism awards for the Middle East and it was wonderful to reward the best from exceptionally high-quality nominations,” added Cooke. They were chosen by votes from executives working within travel and tourism throughout the world.
