Now the destination wedding market has Grown and Grown and Grown! In 2017 nearly 60,000 UK couples will say ‘I do” abroad. It’s a £450million market.
Fashion Editor
Why is it becoming so popular? Because it’s a great idea!!
Lulu Bousfield
And as for those other 240,000, or more, couples who will still chose to marry in the UK, 93 per cent of them will enjoy a luxury honeymoon overseas in a market now worth in excess of £650 million!

Why do couples spend so much on their honeymoon? Because it’s the most important holiday of their lives!! That’s why Brides Abroad is here to help you start married life in style!

If you need a little inspiration, what about a totally authentic Caribbean wedding? You’ll love the rhythms of Jamaica (P.20). Or perhaps you’d prefer the Elite Island destination of Antigua? (P28). Mexico is another firm favourite for destination weddings, with its crystal waters and pure white sand beaches. (P.34).
Photography
Or head in the other direction and go East to the Indian Ocean and discover the fabulous Seychelles – if you can’t choose between two islands, then stay at both! (P46.)
Zavian Patterson (www.cherisheventsw.co.uk)
Prefer closer to home? See our choice of sun-drenched venues in Europe including the island of Cyprus, one of the Mediterranean’s most popular wedding destinations (P.56). Another natural European choice is the Algarve (P.64) as is the magical Greek island of Crete (P.70). In our new fashion section, we can help you to look perfect on your big day with a choice of beautiful gowns and accessories, hand-selected by Brides Abroad’s fashion editor with destination weddings in mind (P.79). We can also guide you through the planning process, with expert advice from wedding planners and a world weather chart so you can be sure that it’s the perfect season for weddings at your chosen destination – see Weather Permitting (P.90). For honeymoons with a difference, we reveal the joys of the great outdoors with a Glamping trip to the French islands off the coast of Brittany (P.116) Or for something a little more conventional, with plenty of romance, head to the Italian lakes (P.108). Can guests afford it?
Everyone loves a wedding abroad, and in the next two years almost ninemillion Brits will be invited to one, but sadly only half will attend, mostly due to lack of money, according to new research from Experian. They reveal that 12 per cent of the nation are struggling to get a loan to attend the wedding. A further 12 per cent can’t get time off work. A third (31 per cent) of those invited will be under 35-years-old and in that age group personal priorities mean that 34 per cent will decline their invitation because they are saving for something special like a house or car. However, Britain is still very much in love with a good wedding party and it is the younger generation that
10 www.BridesAbroad.com
make the most effort to attend weddings abroad. According to James Jones at Experian, the key to surviving the wedding season is financial preparation. So before you respond to each RSVP, research the likely cost and whether you can afford it. Draw up a realistic budget and stick to it. Once you’ve accepted the invitation, plan ahead and set aside the cash. Book your flights and accommodation ASAP as the best deals are often those booked well in advance. Check with the bride and groom to see if there’s a discount code for guests. And don’t be afraid to say no if you can’t afford it!

Top 5 Things To Do
1 Each island in the Caribbean has its own distinctive character, and no other Caribbean destination is as colourful and vibrant as Jamaica - the island is rhythm infused and totally chilled. With its gorgeous year-round climate and stunning scenery, Jamaica is a fantastic choice for destination weddings as well as fun-filled honeymoons. Since Christopher Columbus landed in Jamaica in 1494, the natural beauty of the island has remained unspoiled and couples opting to say “I do” there will discover a gorgeous destination with breathtaking backdrops for their wedding photographs. Jamaica teems with culture, nightlife and beautiful scenery, with delicious cuisine, soothing spas and a host of activities and attractions to keep wedding parties and honeymooners delightfully content and occupied during their stay on the island. Be sure to explore the local attractions, including historic houses and nature trails, botanical gardens and bustling towns and villages. It boasts lush vegetation, sparkling waterfalls, white sand beaches framed by swaying palms and friendly locals. A visit to Dunn’s river Falls on Ocho Rios to climb the world famous waterfall is a must - it’s where Tom Cruise and Elizabeth Shue famously frolicked in the 1980s film Cocktail. Take a sunset cruise on a catamaran, indulge in watersports and scuba diving, golf and tennis or simply chill in the sunshine and swim in the warm Caribbean sea.

Visit Bob Marley Museum Take a trip to the King of Reggae’s former home and recording studio at 56 Hope Road, Kingston, now a landmark museum – and don’t leave without having lunch at Bob’s Café – the Irie ‘natural’ stew is a must, it was Bob’s favourite dish! www.bobscafe.net Gaze at the luminous lagoon Be awestruck by the amazing glowing lagoon in Falmouth. This phenomenon is only found in four places in the world and has been created in Jamaica by fresh water from the Martha Brae River meeting the saltwater ocean. The water is filled with phosphorous, causing it to illuminate brightly. Swim with dolphins Have fun swimming with dolphins at Dolphin Cove in Ocho Rios for a fast and energetic experience. www.dolphincovejamaica.com. Or for something slippery but slower, try swimming with stingrays at Stingray City on James Bond Beach. www.stingraycityjamaica.com. Visit Noël Coward’s home Noël Coward retreated to this spot, known as Look Out for its wonderful views over Port Maria where he lived until his death in 1973. It feels as if Coward was here yesterday - his shirts hang in the bedroom and the table is laid with the dinner service the Queen Mother used when she visited in 1965. River rafting Glide down the Martha Brae or Rio Grande rivers on a bamboo raft each raft take two passengers. Bamboo rafting was Errol Flynn’s favourite pastime, it may be yours too! www.jamaicarafting.com
As night falls the popular bars and nightlife of Negril come alive. You can enjoy cocktails or a glass or two of Jamaican Rum, and dance the night away to reggae music for which Jamaica is renowned. And if the music inspires you, visit the Bob Marley museum at the reggae legend’s former residence and recording studios.
Marry in Jamaica Getting married on the island is easy. You can exchange vows by the spray of a waterfall, at the altar of a church, on a tropical beach or in the lush gardens of your resort hotel under a floral arch or wedding pavilion.

Gina and Adam’s intimate Jamaian beach wedding
22 www.BridesAbroad.com
Gina Marie Simmons from High Wycombe had a schoolgirl crush on her classmate Adam Iliffe throughout her childhood. However, it was only after discovering each other on social media that the couple finally got together and celebrated their new found love with a special beach wedding in Jamaica – with just Gina’s mother-in-law to watch the lovebirds tie the knot Finding ‘the one’ We met at my Mum’s cousin’s wedding. We were both three-years-old and had to hold each others hands. I did not like boys so there are many photos with Adam standing alone! We do have a lovely photo of us together though! Was it love at first sight? No, as he was a boy! Adam and I both went to the same school from the age 5-16, we were even in the same class until we were 12-years-old. I had the most massive crush on him throughout my schooling life. Then he joined the army when he was 17 and I didn’t see him again for years. We got back together after finding each other on Facebook 24-years later. We got on so well after all those years that it felt right that we had to be together. On our first date I told Adam that I loved him, just incase he didn’t want to go on a second date.
The proposal One of our first vacations together was
going to America, and Adam proposed to me in Elvis Presley’s house ‘Graceland’ in Tennessee. He looked at me and said: ‘This would be the perfect place for me to ask you to marry me!’ He says we were in the Jungle Room and I say we were in the Hallway! He knew how much it meant to me to finally be at Gracelands. He was not all that interested in going, but since visiting the house he understands what it means to me and he really enjoyed it too.
Location location We had both been married before and we didn’t want to go through all the planning, involve families etc. This was just about the two of us and nobody else. We both love the sun and wanted somewhere lovely, sunny and hot. We had decided on the Caribbean and we were island hopping. Jamaica was the first island we stayed on for 48 hours or more (one of the special conditions you need to fulfil for marriage in Jamaica).

REAL WEDDINGS
The planning Tropical Sky organised our wedding arrangements with the hotel. They even told us the dates we could get married. The only thing we had to worry about was what type of cake we wanted with our package. We obviously had questions regarding the ceremony, but everything was worked out for us once we had decided on which package to go with. Tropical Sky were beyond helpful. I would recommend them totally to any bride-to-be. Before we went to Jamaica we got our outfits for a beach wedding and gifts for my future mother-in-law, but nothing else, as it was all done for us. The paper work for the actual marriage was submitted to Tropical Sky a few months before to make sure we were both OK to get married. We also bought our wedding rings in the UK before going away.
The guests The only guest at our wedding was my future mother-in-law! We didn’t invite anyone else. The three of us stayed at Sunset at the Palms, Nagril. We told our nearest family and closest friends about our wedding and then just put a wedding photo on facebook to surprise everyone else!
Getting the look I wanted a dress that was very lightweight as I thought there would be a chance
24 www.BridesAbroad.com
that we would go in the sea after we got married. I wanted something that didn’t crease, as we were not going straight to the wedding hotel on arrival in the islands. I wanted something cool for a hot summer day. I didn’t want a strapless dress as buying one online would be difficult with the sizing. The dress has little butterflies on it, which makes it a little different. I had a lightweight cardigan with a butterfly on the back, which I wore for the ceremony as I wanted my arms covered. I bought the dress from a fashion website for £40. I also wore a beautiful long veil, as I wanted to look like a bride and not just like someone wearing a long white dress at 11 am in the morning! The veil cost an awful lot more than the dress! When I got home I threw it in the washing machine on a cool wash to wash out the sea salt and its perfect again now. I wasn’t going to wear shoes as I thought they would sink in the sand (which they did) – but I found a lovely diamante evening pair that I could, and will, be wearing again. The wedding planner at the hotel booked me in to have my hair and make-up done on the morning and as I was having my hair done Adam had a full body massage in the room next to me. I heard him shout ‘see you later’ as he left. Both hair and make-up were outstanding. I told them what colour my flowers were
and they did my eye shadow in the same colour. They knew what make-up would be best for the humid weather and also with a tan. Whilst having my hair done I met the bride-to-be for the next day and she lived only about 20-minutes away from my home town in the UK!
Groomed to perfection Adam wore a new shirt from Next and a pair of beige cargo shorts and beach shoes. We both didn’t want him to wear a shirt and tie in the heat of the day.
The details We didn’t have a particular wedding theme, just a beach wedding! I was born in February and my birth colour is purple, so when our wedding planner showed us a book of flowers to choose from I asked her for the purple ones without Adam seeing. They also gave him a little matching buttonhole to wear, which was lovely. Together Adam and I picked the flowers for the decorated archway we were to be married under. This was the only additional cost of the wedding. I bought Adam’s mum a wrist corsage with a pearl bracelet, so she had some flowers on the day too and a bracelet to keep forever.

REAL WEDDINGS For our wedding cake we had lemon sponge and butter cream. We ate the cake over the next few days as they kept it cool in the restaurant. We were given a choice of cake from a large range of cakes and fillings. It was delicious and fresh and just what we needed for just the three of us!
The ceremony The wedding planner in Jamaica had asked if we wanted a religious service or non-religious. We chose non-religious. The ceremony took place on the beach front – they cleared a path for the aisle and combed the sand straight. Staff were there to make sure nobody crossed the path at the crucial point. They drove me from the hotel to the beach, although it was only a 30-second walk. I got out of the car and could see the decorated archway at the sea edge and also heard the music we had picked for our service playing out loud. The ceremony itself lasted about 10 minutes – it was very short and to the point. We were married by Glenroy Clarke, the local pastor – we didn’t meet him until a few moments before the wedding, he turned up just about on time (Jamaican laid-back time!) During the service I read out a pre-written poem to Adam and he also read words for me. We then exchanged rings. We were told that we would receive our official Marriage Certificate within six-months. Infact we got it within two months. Whilst we were staying at the hotel before the wedding, I was looking for a man to ‘give me away’ and I saw a lovely Canadian man who had been going to the same hotel for nine years! I asked him cheekily (at breakfast) if he was doing anything on the date and asked if he would do my ‘Dad’ duties. He agreed, and walked me down the aisle (I didn’t want to do it on my own as it was a long walk). He was with his wife who we asked to be our second witness. Whenever we bumped into him over the next few days we could hear him humming Here Comes The Bride. After the wedding I called him my Dad!
The reception We married at 11am, so our wedding reception was held on the beach and consisted of wedding cake and Champagne. We went for a posh meal in the evening – the hotel put petals on the table and we had a bottle of bubbly with our meal. 26 www.BridesAbroad.tcom
First Dance We met a local guy who was wonderful at playing Bob Marley songs on his guitar and I asked him a few days before if he would sing for us. As we walked back down the aisle as man and wife he sang One Love and by the time we decided that perhaps we should have a little dance (as we had not discussed this before hand), we actually danced to the Redemption Song by Bob Marley, which is by no way a wedding song! The hotel had a Jamaican band that evening and they took us to the front and informed the hotel guests that we were the couple that had just got married. We felt like we were famous for the day as everyone congratulated us all around the hotel – residents and staff alike.
Photographic memories We didn’t want to have any photos taken and got the witnesses to use our own camera to snap away. But they did lay on a photographer for free and he took loads. Of course when we saw them we bought the whole lot. My favourite photo is of Adam punching the air as soon as the pastor had announced we were finally husband and wife. Thankfully the photographer caught it and it’s now in a frame, blown up and in our lounge in proud place.
Magic moments Seeing Adam at the end of aisle and the happiness in his eyes was the best moment for me! Our funniest memory was taking the table that we had signed our Marriage Certificate on into the sea and sitting down at the table for photos. Thankfully the sea was lovely and warm
and we cooled off after the wedding. Unfortunately the rest of the wedding photos didn’t look as nice as my dress was soaked! I was 25-minutes late down the aisle as I wanted to Skype my parents before I got married. Everyone was OK waiting for me as they had a free bar down on the beach!
The honeymoon My mother-in-law had booked this Jamaican vacation a year before for her special birthday. We gatecrashed it with our wedding plans. She was, therefore, a pivital part of our day. We considered it a vacation/wedding/honeymoon. On seeing our wedding photos my parents did say they wish they had been there on the day, but thankfully they looked after my daughter and did the school run whilst we were away.
On budget? We were lucky enough for it to be paid for as our wedding present, so I have no idea!

The legals A civil wedding in Mexico is fully valid and legal worldwide. You can have a religious ceremony in Mexico, but it can only be a blessing as only civil marriages are recognised as legal. However, you can choose to have a religious wedding as well as a civil ceremony, which can be performed at the Registry Office or elsewhere, including in your hotel grounds or on the beach. Fees range from £65 to £160. The ceremony will be conducted in Spanish in the presence of an interpreter and the marriage certificate will be in Spanish, which you can then have translated into English. There are no Mexican residency requirements, but you should allow a few days in Mexico before your wedding for legal checks. You must also have a blood test done in Mexico. The Civil Registers Office can recommend a doctor or clinic. Those under 18 cannot marry without parental consent.
The paperwork Proof of ID – Your Birth Certificate, passport and entry permit will all be required. Proof of Status – For marriages to take place in Mexico you must both attend your local Registry Office in the UK and give ‘notice of marriage’. After 21 days a Certificate of Non Impediment’ will be issued, which is valid for 3 months.

A dream wedding in
CANCUN When Catia Fernandes Taixeira from Madaira and Philipe Carneiro from Brazil met in a London bar close to where they work, they were yet to discover that their love of living by the ocean would soon lead to them saying “I do” on the beach in Cancun, Mexico’s world-renowned seaside resort

REAL WEDDINGS
Finding ‘the one’ We met at Loop bar, in London, where both our companies used to go in groups for a drink after work. I definitely don’t think it was love at first sight as it took Philipe three months until we had our first date!
The proposal It wasn’t a proposal as such – we kind of decided together after our amazing holiday in Cancun in 2014, we loved it so much that we decided we wanted to get married there. So we went back in 2016 and had our dream wedding.
Location, location I am originally from the island of Madeira and while living there I used to live a five-minutes walk from the beach. So being by the sea is part of my character. Philipe, being Brazilian, also loves the beach and being by the sea. We wanted our wedding to be about who we are. We wanted a location where our families and friends could meet and when we spent our holidays in Cancun we fell in love with this place. We booked our wedding at Dreams Riviera Cancun just two months after returning home.
The planning Philipe and I started planning our wedding around 18 months before our big day. Kieren, from our tour operator Tropical Sky, did a brilliant job organising all the guests’ accommodation and requirements. The support from day one until our return to the UK was just superb. They were extremely helpful and we were very happy with their service. In Mexico, the hotel has a team of wedding coordinators, who organised the ceremony, reception, decorations and arrangements. I took some decor that I had created myself – including the cake topper; place cards; Guest Book etc.
The guests We had 37 guests in total who all stayed at Dreams Riviera Cancun with us. Most of the guests were more than happy to travel to Mexico for our wedding, except my family in Madeira, who unfortunately found it difficult to travel such a long way for economic reasons, which was a shame. 38 www.BridesAbroad.com
Getting the look
The ceremony
My wedding dress is from Pronovias, I went to Madrid to get it done. Jessica at the Velazquez store was amazing and helped me with both the fittings and finding the right accessories including the veil; the shoes were Cinderella from Melissa at Vivienne Westwood. My best friend did my make-up as she is a professional make-up artist (Txanan by Nisa Castanha. My hair, and my bridesmaids’ hair was styled by the hair dresser from the hotel. I changed into a second dress for the evening entertainment.
The ceremony was really gorgeous. It took place on the white sands of Dreams Riviera Cancun. We exchanged our vows under a beautiful gazebo decorated with yellow and ivory flowers, with billowing white fabric curtains tied back with the flowers. Our guests sat on white chairs in front of the gazebo looking out over the ocean. As most of our guests spoke Portuguese, we specially requested a Brazilian minister to marry us. We opted for a Traditional Sand Ceremony, which really impressed us – it was beautiful and very meaningful. The service lasted around 30 minutes and my father gave me away.
Something Old, Something New Something Borrowed and Something Old were earrings from my best friend; Something Blue was my engagement ring as it has a dark sapphire and Something New was my dress – as well as everything else I was wearing!
Groom & bridesmaids The groom was dressed by Moss Bros, and the bridesmaids dresses were bought in Madeira, where one of the bridesmaids lives.
The details We themed our wedding ‘Beach chic’. We had beautiful calla lilies, yellow roses and greenery in our wedding flowers and our wedding cake was Red Velvet with passion fruit filling.
The reception We chose a Mexican buffet for our wedding reception, which was served on the hotel’s decking area down by the beach. We requested that the hotel decorated the reception with fish bowls on each table, which were filled with sand and sea shells, I put a few finishing touches to the table decorations myself with décor I had brought from home. During the cocktail hour we had a special cocktail done for us – which was coloured to match the bridesmaid’s dresses. We also had a DJ with a dance floor and fireworks – our First Dance was Frank Sinatra The Way You Look Tonight. Later in the evening we all transferred to the hotel club where I wore my second dress.
Photographic memories We had a team of five photographers and videographers who flew in from Brazil to

REAL WEDDINGS
cover our wedding. They stayed for five days and followed us everywhere, so they could create a series of short movies before filming the main wedding video.
Magic moments Every moment was magical – but what I will always recall was the feeling of extreme happiness as I heard my chosen song, Thousand Years, playing on the harp as I took my first step down the aisle. My funniest and sweetest memory was seeing my mum dance for the first time. One near disaster was just as I was about to walk up the aisle my veil got caught up on a plant – thankfully my wedding coordinator immediately caught it and saved the moment. 40 www.BridesAbroad.com
The honeymoon As we like to do everything the other way around, we had the first part of our honeymoon first, because we arrived in Cancun two weeks before our guests started to arrive – we stayed at Fairmont Mayakoba and we did everything we didn’t have time to do last time we were there. We will do part two of our honeymoon right after I finish my Masters in Interior Architecture in September. Nothing booked yet, but we hope to visit Cambodia.

Marry in the
Seychelles
Exchange your wedding vows in the Seychelles and be blessed with one of the world’s most perfect settings on your special day. 44 www.BridesAbroad.com
You will truly feel like royalty if you marry in the Seychelles – after all, this is where Prince William and Kate Middleton chose to spend their honeymoon. The stunning tropical islands in the Indian Ocean are a poet and novelist’s dream, it is said that Ian Fleming found inspiration for the James Bond novel, For Your Eyes Only after staying on the islands and it is sure to inspire you too! Situated close to the Equator and 100 miles off the African coastline, the granite and coral islands of the Seychelles are the perfect choice for unforgettable weddings, blessings and honeymoons. A total of just 16 of the islands are habitable and provide a range of tropical island accommodation – ranging from rustic beachside bungalows to luxury five-star resorts. The history of the Seychelles is fascinating. The granite islands are actually the highest peaks of the submerged remnants of the super continent Gondwanaland, and represent the most ancient mid-ocean islands in the world, boasting some of the rarest species of flora and fauna and some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet, framed by granite boulders. According to legend, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Vallee de Mai, could be the original site of the biblical Garden of Eden. Today the Seychelles remain lush and natural, with little sign of the ravages of time and tourism.
Islands at a glance… The principal islands of the Seychelles are Mahe, Praslin and La Digue, granite islands which boast verdant peaks, virgin forests and immaculate beaches. The outer cluster of islands are flat, coral islands, which remain mostly uninhabited.
Mahe Mahe is the most popular island with soaring peaks and over 65 stunning beaches. North Mahe is home to the famous water sport hotspot Beau Vallon Beach. In contrast, South Mahe has some of the island’s prettiest beaches and villages plus Victoria, one of the world’s tiniest capitals boasting charm, traditional

Island hop Explore the neighbouring islands – including spending a day on La Digue where you can cycle around the island. Shop in Victoria Visit the colourful local market in Victoria, the capital of Mahe to buy souvenirs. Then stroll through the charming streets, botanical gardens and tea plantations. Hike to the highest point For the best views go to the island’s high points. Hike to the highest point of the Seychelles at Morne Seychellois National Park on Mahe for a magnificent panoramic vista. Visit the Garden of Eden Stroll through the giant palms in Vallee de Mai, said to be the biblical Garden of Eden and see the indigenous Coco de Mer – you may even spot a Black Parrot or two! Enjoy the sunsets Book yourself a sunset cruise – or simply raise a glass of chilled bubbly and toast the romantic island sunsets from your luxury hotel.
La digue The third largest island in the Seychelles, La Digue is famous for its incredible sculptured granite boulder formations on Source d’Argent beaches.
Other islands There are a number of smaller, more remote islands including Bird, Cerf, Chauve, Souris, Cousine, Denis, Desroches, Fregate, North, Silhouette, Round Island and Sainte-Anne. All absolutely stunning and providing gorgeous settings for weddings and honeymoons.
Getting married in the Seychelles The Seychelles provide many romantic wedding and blessing locations – from palm-fringed white sandy beaches to ceremonies aboard magnificent catamaran yachts. Most of the four and five-star hotels have designated wedding locations within their grounds. The majority of weddings in the Seychelles are civil and performed by a registrar, though religious ceremonies and renewal of vows can be arranged on request.
The legals For a civil marriage in the Seychelles, you will need the following documentation: • Passports and birth certificates • Documents to show that there is no impediment to marriage • Divorce papers (decree nisi absolute) if applicable • Previous marriage certificate and death certificate, if widowed.

Sand between their toes
Heidi-Jane and Matthew’s vows on a tropical beach 46 www.BridesAbroad.com
Globe trotters Hiedi-Jane Smith and Matthew Hill, who live in Dubai, decided that the most romantic place in the world to marry was the Seychelles, so they headed to the tropical Indian Ocean paradise for a barefoot beach ceremony. Finding ‘the one’ We met online, and had our First Date at Rosso Wine Bar and Restaurant, Amwaj Rotana in Dubai. It may not quite have been love at first sight, but I knew he was special immediately.
The proposal Matthew popped the question in spectacular style on the Great Wall of China whilst we were on holiday. We were hiking the unrestored part of the wall, and at one point with nothing and noobody around us, just the most amazing view, he asked my thoughts about ‘getting hitched’ It was a lovely surprise, but not totally unexpected as we knew we were going to spend the rest of our lives together already, so it seemed like the natural next step.
Location, location Living in Dubai, we wanted a destination wedding, and Seychelles was only four hours away. The resort looked perfect and was All-Inclusive, so we and our guests could really relax without thinking about money – we did not want to be away for long as we have dogs in Dubai, so the Seychelles wedding requirements were perfect as we only needed to be there two days before the wedding.
The planning We chose the location and Tropical Sky as our tour operator and we were provided with a wedding planner at the resort. Tropical Sky were very helpful with all the travel arrangements. The main thing we had to do was to find a suitable date, once this was done we did almost no planning until we arrived at the resort and met the wedding planner.

REAL WEDDINGS
The guests We had four guests at our wedding, two couples who stayed in villas at either side of our villa.
Getting the look My wedding dress was actually from Alibaba online and I had it adjusted slightly in Dubai once I received it. I fell in love with the dress design after some days of looking at pictures, I was looking for a dress that would work well for a beach wedding – comfortable but with some special features. My hairpiece was handmade from a lovely lady on Etsy, I was over the moon with it! Everything else was gifted or borrowed from close friends and had a very special meaning. A lady was supplied by the hotel to do my hair and make-up as part of our luxury wedding package organised by Tropical Sky.
Something Old, Something New Something Old: a broach containing my grandmothers hair taken when she was a baby. Something New: my dress. Something Borrowed: my bracelet and earrings from my bridesmaid/witness. Something Blue: a blue topaz necklace handmade from Iran from my awesome Iranian friend.
Groom & bridesmaids Matthew wore a tuxedo. My two friends were my bridesmaids – they wore whatever they felt comfortable in – as it happened, the colours were very similar. We wanted everyone to feel relaxed and comfortable.
The details Our wedding theme was simply ‘a beach’ theme. The wedding flowers I chose were Frangapani as it grows everywhere on the island. Our wedding cake was a delicious chocolate cake with a personalised wedding topper which I had organised myself.
The ceremony Our 20-minute ceremony was held on a beach at the resort in a very relaxed atmosphere, just as we wanted. It took 48 www.BridesAbroad.com

place under a simple wedding gazebo draped with white fabric. We were married by the registrar from Mahe.
The reception Afterwards, as there were only six of us, we had a private dinner at the beach restaurant, where the hotel arranged for our table to be decorated specially for us. We didn’t have a set menu, we simply chose from the menu. I did have a First Dance - Ed Sheeran Thinking out loud, but we didn’t have any other entertainment laid on, as we didn’t need it. On the last night of our stay, when our guests had left we were treated to a romantic meal, just the two of us. It was perfect 50 www.BridesAbroad.com
Photographic memories Our photographs were taken by the hotel photographer and we also had a video filmed by their vidotographer - both were excellent.
Magic moments My favourite memory was when the registrar asked Matthew if he would take me as his wife and his reply was “Absolutely”. The funniest memory was getting into the hotel pool in our wedding outfits.
On budget? Our whole wedding cost £7,000 excluding flights – which was right on budget!

Situated at the crossroads of three continents – Europe, Asia and Africa – Cyprus is a small island with a long history and a rich culture that spans 10,000 years, making it one of the oldest civilizations in the Mediterranean - as evidenced by the many fascinating cultural sights, museums, monuments and galleries. The island’s unique geographic position has played an important part in its turbulent past and now Cyprus is an open-air museum of prehistoric settlements, classical Greek temples, Roman theatres and villas. Party your socks off Head to Agia Napa and join in the lively nightlife – the town attracts the party crowd at night, but during the day the old fishing port is a focal point for tourists and it has one of the best beaches in Cyprus. Marry in Cyprus Cyprus is one of Europe’s leading destinations for weddings, blessings and honeymoons because of its beautiful scenery, numerous options for venues, ceremonies and celebrations and its easy access from the UK. There are many reasons why Cyprus wins the heart of couples planning to marry abroad including its short flying time from UK airports; significantly lower costs of weddings; simple marriage formalities which are legal worldwide; wedding certificate given at the ceremony on the same day; English widely spoken and of course a stunning variety of wedding venues to choose from, including beaches, yachts, castles, museums, wineries and rustic villages, where weddings can follow all the traditional local customs. Of course, the beautiful climate throughout the year has great appeal for UK couples, and to top it all, Cyprus offers a wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets – from 5-star resorts to self-catering apartments – which means that family and friends can combine your wedding with their own family holiday.
Religious Weddings_ All towns and cities in Cyprus have their own Municipal Offices where you can acquire your Marriage License and, if you are planning a civil ceremony, get married. For religious ceremonies, you must first apply for your Marriage License at the Municipal Offices, and then arrange your ceremony at the church or chapel of your choice. www.BridesAbroad.com 57

Married on Aphrodite’s
Island of Love
Lorraine and Fouad’s beautiful beach ceremony in Cyprus 58 www.BridesAbroad.com
When Lorraine Watson and Fouad Nashir from London set eyes on each other at a party, they immediately knew they had met ‘the one’ – so when it came to choosing a wedding venue, they decided that there was nowhere better to say “I do” than on the magical island of Cyprus, birthplace of Aphrodite, the God of Love
Finding ‘the one’ We met a friend’s party, and it was definitely love at first sight! We went for a date the very next day – and every day after that.
The proposal Fouad proposed to me at our old meeting point in Trafalgar Square – it was raining and we both had our brollies up. He stopped mid walk and pulled out the ring and asked me to be his wife! It was kind of unexpected, but we had been together for a long time and it was our anniversary.
Location location We made the choice to marry abroad because we realised that we are both super-relaxed when we are abroad – it’s an escapism. We chose Cyprus because we love the island and, after all, it is the land of Aphrodite, God of Love. It also has beautiful landscapes and beaches, which we knew would be perfect for our wedding.
The planning We used the services of wedding planner Sue Hall at the Paphos Wedding Company. She was absolutely brilliant www.BridesAbroad.com 59
REAL WEDDINGS and took all the stress out of the arrangements. And she has amazing skills with decorating a wedding. Pretty much everything was planned before we went out to Cyprus.
The guests We had 40 guests, who stayed at various hotels and apartments around Cyprus Almost everyone we invited happily accepted their invitation, as they saw it as a holiday for them.
Getting the look I found a Grecian style, Alfred Angelo wedding dress at Pascallai Brides in Poole which was just what I wanted for our beach wedding. It was very light chiffon, so perfecct for hot weather. I accessorised with diamante sandals and a matching bag. I finished off the look with matching earrings and necklace. I got some help with my hair, and my best friend, who is a make-up artist, did amazing things with my make-up.
Groom & bridesmaids Fouad wore a light, ivory waistcoat, dark pink cravat, white shirt and light grey trousers. The bridesmaids were all dressed the same in summery dresses with sweetheart necklines, however, in keeping with our colour scheme three of them were in light pink and three in aqua.
The details We themed our wedding Grecian/Beach in the colours pink and aqua. I chose my favourite flowers, which were roses, peonies and carnations. Instead of a wedding cake we had lemon and chocolate cupcakes.
The ceremony Our beautiful wedding ceremony took place under a white, decorated pavilion beside the sea, with all my friends and family looking on. It lasted around 15 - minutes and took place on the sands of the gorgeous St George’s Beach in Paphos. It was a lovely service and my sister Sarah gave me away.

REAL WEDDINGS
The reception After the ceremony we held our reception at the wonderful Annabelle Hotel in Paphos. The meal was a Greek BBQ buffet with something for everyone. The table decorations were in pink and white, with birdcages and balloons
The music of love Our First Dance was to Jill Scott He loves Me and Ben E King Stand By Me. We also had a magician to entertain our guests as well as a DJ.
Magic moments My most special memory is at the ceremony, when we first saw each other. It was a wonderful moment. And I think my funniest memories were of the flower girls who had cupcakes all over them.
The honeymoon After our wedding we stayed on in Cyprus for our honeymoon together, but moved to Protaras to be on our own. Our guests stayed on in Paphos and enjoyed the rest of their time holidaying there.
On budget? The whole wedding cost around ÂŁ6,000, including hotels etc. In actual fact that was slightly over our budget, due to more guests than anticipated.

If you want a bright, warm sunshine destination that’s just a short hop away from the UK, then Portugal’s Algarve is a perfect choice 64 www.BridesAbroad.com
However, we recommend you use the services of a dedicated wedding planner who can assist with ideas, venues, suppliers and all the necessary documentation.

From pretty sheltered coves to wide stretches of pristine sand, not forgetting its pretty towns and villages and world-class golf courses, The Algarve has it all! However this region of Portugal has so much more to offer than simply sun, sea and sand. Civil Ceremony
Legals For your Civil Ceremony you will need:
• • • •
Identification documents Birth Certificates A Certificate of No Impediment Additionally you may need divorce certificates or death certificates of former partners or previous marriage certificates. • All documents must be translated into Portuguese and notarized locally, and you will need a translator for the civil ceremony.
For Catholic Ceremonies you will also need: • Documentation from your parish priest granting permission for the ceremony • Documentation for the Bishop of your parish • Documentation regarding baptism, first communion and confirmation
The simplest way to marry in Algarve is for couples to have a civil wedding at their local UK Registry Office, followed by a blessing or religious wedding in the Algarve. Couples no longer need to have a 30-day residency requirement, making it easier for non-residents to have a legally binding Civil Ceremony in Portugal. Civil weddings can take place at many venues, from a Registry Office to a beach ceremony.
Catholic Ceremony Catholic wedding ceremonies are always celebrated in churches rather than hotel and beach venues, and because Portugal is a very religious country it has an abundance of beautiful churches – from small and simple to grand and richly decorated in religious iconography. There are also plenty of English-speaking priests in the Algarve.
Church of England Ceremony If you want a C of E ceremony in Portugal, there are several English-speaking Vicars in the Algarve who are able to perform ceremonies in the Catholic churches, with prior permission from the Catholic Priest. They can personalize the ceremony to your requirements and are also able to perform weddings at other selected locations.
Blessings
Marry in the Algarve Whether on a sandy beach, a cliff top, a hotel garden, golf resort, local church or private marquee or villa, you can choose from a host of gorgeous venues to tie the knot in the Algarve to suit your individual taste, style and budget. Select the style of ceremony of your dreams – from a legally binding civil wedding ceremony to a bespoke blessing performed by a Celebrant or a religious Catholic or Protestant ceremony. If you are marrying at one of the hotels, there are usually wedding co-ordinators on hand to help you every step of the way.
Like a Civil Wedding, a Blessing Ceremony can take place at any location in the Algarve. This ceremony is ideal for couples wanting to renew their vows. However, a blessing ceremony does not form a legal marriage contract and is purely symbolic, so if you want to become legally married you will also need a Civil ceremony at your local Registry Office in the UK.

Amor in the Algarve
Shonagh and Martin’s stylish nuptials in Portugal 66 www.BridesAbroad.com
Shonagh Diack and her partner Martin Robertson had been together for many years before they finally decided to tie the knot. However, they chose to celebrate their wedding in sunshine and style by inviting friends and family to join them on their big day at Hilton Vilamoura, one of the finest hotels in the Algarve Finding ‘the one’ We met back in 2000 when we both worked at Chiquito. It wasn’t love at first sight, it was a slow burn. We didn’t get engaged until 2015.
The proposal Martin proposed to me at home on the sofa. We had recently been away on skiing holiday in France, but he said there was never an appropriate moment, so we were in our pyjamas watching TV when I got one of my other rings caught on something and had a little moan about it – so he said I could have another ring to moan about! It was, totally unexpected as getting married had never been something we’d really discussed.
Location location We decided that we didn’t want a traditional wedding that was the same as everyone elses. We’d been on holiday to Vilamoura before and both loved it, so it seemed like an appropriate place.
The planning We did a lot of the planning ourselves, and also had the Events Manager from the hotel Hilton Vilamoura to help us. We arranged our own flights with BA and booked a villa through Premier Villas. We had everything planned before we went – we made two trips out to visit the resort before the actual wedding trip.
The guests Our wedding guests included 61 adults and six children who stayed in various hotels and villas throughout the Algarve. A lot of people turned it into their summer holiday. Of the friends and family we invited we were lucky enough to have two thirds accept the invitation and make it out to Portugal for our wedding.
Getting the look My dress was a Mori Lee gown from a lovely shop called Our Day in Aberdeen. I also had a bird cage fascinator designed

REAL WEDDINGS specifically for me by Mairi Brunning Millinery. I had a watch that my grandad had given to my gran on their 30th Wedding Anniversary made into a bracelet to match my dress by Modiste. For our hair and make-up, my bridesmaid and I used the services of Unique and Chic.
Something Old, Something New? My Something Old, Borrowed and Blue was my mum’s garter that she wore to her wedding. My Something New were my Jimmy Choo shoes.
Groom & bridesmaids Martin, my groom, wore a blue Hugo Boss suit. The bridesmaid wore a royal blue Grecian-style dress.
The details We chose to have a ‘vague’ 1920’s Great Gatsby theme to our wedding, to match my dress! We told the florist the vague theme and allowed her to choose the flowers. As for the cake – neither of us like cake that much, so we decided against having one!
The ceremony The wedding cermony took place in the gardens at the Hilton Vilamoura in the Algarve. The service, conducted by a Portuguese Registrar, lasted about 20-minutes as it had to be conducted in Portuguese and then translated into English. My Dad gave me away, with my Godson, two nieces and best friend as bridesmaid walking down the aisle before us.
The reception We had a BBQ buffet with traditional Portuguese food in the ballroom of the Hilton Vilamoura. The florist made centrepieces in the 1920s theme and we had Jo Mallone candles that were the same scent as the perfume I was wearing. We had our first dance to James Bay Scars, then we had DJ – Manu from ABC Sound and Lighting. He was brilliant, as, although he was Portuguese, he accomodated our Scottish tradition of having Loch Lomond played as the final song.

Photographic memories We had Garrett Walsh from Algarve Wedding Photograpy, but decided against a video. There are lots of beautiful photos to choose from but my favourites are the one of me looking excited before I go down the aisle, one of me and Martin laughing at the alter, and the one where a guest is dancing to Proud Mary.
Magic moments Seeing Martin for the first time at the end of the aisle was one of my most special memories. One of the funniest is when my friend lost her shoes as she took them off for dancing and couldn’t remember where she’d put them. The only near disaster was when a beer pump we had placed outside for the guests to enjoy tripped all the electricty, which caused a half-hour delay to get everything back up and running!
The honeymoon We stayed in Vilamoura for another four days after the wedding with most of the guests. However we will be going away on a special honeymoon together next year – but we haven’t decide on where we want to go yet.
On budget? It all cost around £25,000 – we didn’t really have a budget.

Crete Charming
Couples seeking rustic and truly romantic weddings in the Mediterranean sun will be delighted to discover the gorgeous settings that the Greek island of Crete has to offer 70 www.BridesAbroad.com
Crete is a delightful Greek island boasting a stunning 1,000 kilometer-long coastline dotted with pretty coves, bays and peninsulas, fringed with soft, sandy beaches and lapped by the Mediterranean Sea. Newlyweds looking for a blissful Mediterranean honeymoon will discover that this gorgeous island has so much more to offer than simply sun, sea and sand. It is also the perfect place for couples to tie the knot – with its choice of beautiful locations and, best of all, Crete is close enough for your friends and family to travel with ease to join you for your wedding day. With a mild climate Crete is one of the sunniest Greek islands, so a Crete wedding is ideal for those wanting to escape the unreliable British weather! Crete is the largest island in Greece, and the southernmost island in the Mediterranean. It has four main areas: Chania, Heraklion, Lassithi and Rethymno, with two international airports offering daily flights from the UK to Heraklion and Chania. It enchants visitors with its mountainous landscapes, dramatic gorges (including the world-famous Samaria Gorge), beautiful beaches, rocky coves, quaint towns and traditional Greek villages. You will also enjoy excellent food in the many tavernas and of course, an exciting nightlife! For beach lovers the stunning coastline beckons, with its secluded coves and large stretches of sand, and a choice of holiday resorts to suit all tastes and styles, from the exclusive VIP favourite of Elounda to the party atmosphere in Malia, and everything in between. However, culture vultures will be enthralled by Crete’s rich history. It is home of the Minoan civilization, the oldest form of civilization in Europe, which has resulted in important archeological finds at Knossos, Phaistos and Gortys. Crete was also ruled by Venetians for more than four centuries and the historic coastal towns of Rethymno and Chania bear a remarkable similarity to Venice.
Marry in Crete A wedding in Crete offers both charm and character. Couples will find a warm welcome from the locals who will be delighted to share their beautiful island on your wedding day. The Greeks take their
weddings seriously, and Greek weddings in Crete are more spectacular than anywhere else in Greece – here it is not uncommon to have 2,000 or more wedding guests! However, all sizes of weddings are catered for on the island, from grand events to just the two of you!
Top 5 Things To Do 1 2 3 4 5
Visit Balos Lagoon This rocky outcrop is surrounded by white sand and the crystal clear Mediterranean. The beach is reached by car or boat from the port of Kissamos. Be sure to take your bikini and a camera. Take a hike Take a walk through the breathtaking Samaria Gorge, supposedly the longest canyon in Europe, which passes through sheer cliffs, mountains and pine forests on an 11 mile trek. www.samaria.gr See the capital Stroll through the streets of Chania, the cultural capital of Crete and gaze at the beautiful mix of Venetian and Turkish architecture in Old Town. Browse the wealth of art galleries and museums and visit its stunning harbor framed by its Venetian lighthouse. Explore the ruins Discover the famous Minoan palace of Knossos, near Heraklion – it’s the most popular attraction on Crete, its ruins were uncovered in 1900 by the British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans. It’s now reconstructed so you can now walk through the palace rooms. Take the train Follow the famous footsteps of Leonardo di Caprio and Lady Gaga and visit the ‘celebrity resort’ of Elounda, then take the little blue sightseeing train from Elounda to the fishing village of Plaka and enjoy the breath-taking views en route. www.littletraintours.gr/index.html
There are many beautiful wedding venues on the island of Crete – whether you want a religious or civil wedding or a blessing, you can find a stunning location to suit your style. Crete has some of the best beaches in Greece, so where better to have your wedding ceremony than on a soft, sandy beach? Some of the stunning hotels on the island are also ideal for civil weddings in their lush gardens, wedding pavilions, ballrooms, terraces, and private beaches.
Legal requirements The following documents are required by the Greek authorities for both church and civil weddings: • Passport • Certificate of Non Impediment (CNI) – proof that you are free to marry • Birth Certificate • Decree Absolute or Death Certificate if relevant • Deed Poll Certificate or Statutory Declaration if you have changed your name. • Adoption Certificate if relevant Note: UK documents to be used in Greece must be officially legalised with an Apostille stamp (available for UK public documents from the Legalisation Office in London; (020 70081111) then officially translated when in Greece via a certified translator or the Translations Bureau of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( +30 210 3244036).
Registration of the Marriage All marriages in Greece, whether civil or religious, must be registered by the bride and groom at the local Registrar’s Office/ Office of Vital Statistics (Lixiarhio) within 40 days following the ceremony. Once registered, a Marriage Certificate will be issued within three days and can be picked up or sent via mail. Marriages not registered have no legal validity. www.BridesAbroad.com 71

Teachers tie the knot
Natalie and Matthew’s barefoot beach wedding 72 www.BridesAbroad.com
When Natalie Gunson’s mum introduced her daughter to her new neighbour, Matthew Elliott, the sparks began to fly. It wasn’t long before the couple, who are both teachers, fell head over heals in love. After years of travelling the world together, its not surprising that they chose the stunning island of Crete to tie the knot in a charming beach ceremony. Finding ‘the one’ We met in Eastbourne, East Sussex where we both used to live. My mum moved into the flat below Matt’s while I was at university. When I left university I moved back in with mum for a while and Matt and I got to know each other. I think it was lust rather than love at first sight, but we fell for each other very quickly.
the Bridal Consultant’s website. All the following correspondence was so easy and so the decision was made!
The planning
Matt proposed in the Gili Islands, during a trip with some of our best friends – we’d been there a few years before so it was a special place. We’d been out for dinner with our friends and after dinner we moved to a chilled-out bar on the beach with bean bags and sofas. Matt asked a friend to take some photographs of us – I was posing for a photo and he was getting down on one knee! At this point we had been together for almost six years and we’d talked about getting married one day, however, I didn’t know when he would propose, and in that moment it was totally unexpected!
We used the services of Matt and Lisa Burton at The Bridal Consultant, wedding planners and we booked all our accommodation and flights through their sister company. The whole planning experience was brilliant – they were so helpful and quick to respond to emails and none of my questions were ever too small or silly, which was fantastic. We had quite specific ideas and provided examples, which meant that we got exactly what we’d asked for. When planning a wedding overseas, you really have to trust that your planners have it all sorted - and they did!! Caroline, our coordinator in Crete, even booked a pampering nail spa session for my bridesmaids, mum and me with bubbles and nibbles! All the restaurants and bars that she recommended in Rethymno were perfect too, and catered fantastically for our large dinner groups each night.
Location, location
The guests
Matt and I have travelled a lot and lived overseas while we’ve been together, so an overseas wedding seemed like the obvious choice. We love the sun and knew we didn’t want to get married in a church. We had agreed that we wanted a barefoot beach wedding, with the sounds of the sea as the backing soundtrack. We spent a lot of time looking online at photos of beautiful beach venues. We then did a Google image search which led us to find a beautiful photograph of Rethymno Beach and it took us to
We were lucky enough to have 45 guests who made the trip to Crete for our wedding. They all stayed in and around Rethymno, but they each organised their own accomodation – most stayed in the same two hotels, but some organised their own villas and some camped! We do count ourselves very lucky that so many people wanted to come all that way to celebrate with us. Our wedding was completely relaxed and informal with beautiful weather, on the beach, with a disco until 4am. It was perfect! Like a dream!

REAL WEDDINGS
Getting the look We had a chilled beach and travel theme, with mint and coral as our colour scheme. I went to five different bridal boutiques before I found my dress, by Stella York – it was beautiful, with a low, lacy back and so very different from the ‘floaty’ dress I had imagined I would wear – when my mum picked my dress out from a rail I tried it on and all my previous ideas went out the window! I loved it so much.
Finishing touches I tried on a hairpiece in one bridal shop and my mum started to well up, it was a look that suited me but it had a ceramic daisy design, which wasn’t the theme of our wedding. Then I found a little boutique, where they make bespoke items, and they made a hairpiece especially for me in mint, coral and white! My footwear plans changed last minute. I found some cute pearl barefoot sandals on Amazon for my bridesmaids and me. Then, just before we flew to Crete, I saw some bright blue and gold wedges in Office and I fell in love! I decided that they were my ‘Something Blue’ for the ceremony to make me look taller in my dress, so I wore them for walking down the aisle and for the ceremony. After the service it was barefoot sandals for the rest of the day! I wore some diamond earrings (a wedding gift from Matt) and some pearl earrings that my mum had given to me. I wore two bracelets; one was the same as I had given to my bridesmaids. The other was a chunky pearl bracelet tied up with a ribbon that was a gift from my bridesmaids. The Bridal Consultant made arrangements for me to get my hair and make-up done.
Something Old, Something New? Something Old and Something Borrowed were my mum’s pearl necklace that my dad had given her many years ago, my dress was Something New and my Office shoes were my Something Blue.
Groom and bridesmaids Matt chose his outfit, which looked fab! He wanted to wear a bow tie and braces and we found his mint bow tie online and got the same for all of the groomsmen. He wore a white shirt and some map themed cufflinks that our bridesmaids bought him. The coral bridesmaids dresses were a real find, they were light and floaty in a gorgeous colour from www.getthelabel.com. The girls loved them! 74 www.BridesAbroad.com
The details Matt and I are teachers, and have worked and travelled abroad for most of our relationship, so the ‘travel’ theme was perfectly fitting for us. Our tables’ names, for example, were places we’ve lived and where Matt proposed. For my flowers, I chose roses - I love them! I wanted the bouquet to match our mint and coral colour theme, so I asked for coral and white flowers with some succulents to bring in the minty green look. I asked for ribbons to be tied round the bouquet and was delighted with the finished results. We had a three-tiered wedding cake, decorated with shells, pearls and starfish – each tier was a different, delicous flavour.
The ceremony The ceremony lasted around 30-minutes and took place on Rethymno Beach at
REAL WEDDINGS the Minos Mare Royal Hotel with sand between our toes, just as I had planned. My dad gave me away and then it all seemed to go so quickly!
The reception The reception was held at the same hotel. We moved to the Palm Garden for dinner, and then back to the beach for the disco which lasted until 4 am! Matt wanted a BBQ on the beach, and the meal was as close to a BBQ menu as the venue could provide, consisting of Cretan food, lots of grilled meats and vegetables. All totally delicious! The guests were provided with bubbly on the beach, wine on the dinner tables and could drink anything that they liked at the beach party after the meal. All our smaller details were beach/travel themed items. We had a suitcase for guests to put their cards in, Messages in Bottles for guests to take, luggage tags were used for icebreaker questions and for a guest book. The men received flip flop bottle openers as their Favours and the women received beach themed wine glass charms. The two children guests’ had a little travel pack of activities to do. I made bunting out of old atlases and we had heart shaped map confetti on the tables. To acknowledge the fact that we are both teachers, I’d written some small signs on chalkboards too! The tables had coral runners with little jars filled with sand and flowers placed on top. We had photographs of the two of us printed and scattered on the tables too. Our wedding cake was also beach themed, with starfish decorations and tiny little pearls - it was beautiful!
The music of love For our First Dance we danced on the beach to Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud while our guests watched in a circle around us waving sparklers. We also had a firework display on the beach, which was amazing, and then a DJ provided fabulous music for the wedding party to dance to all night long. In our RSVP’s we’d asked for our guests’ song requests to play at our reception – we are so glad we did as it provided lots of entertainment when people heard “their song”!
Photographic memories Our photographs and video were taken by HannaMonika Photography, who made the day so much more relaxing by really 76 www.BridesAbroad.com
getting to know us and make us laugh – we are delighted with the video as it is so much fun to watch and our photographs are completely gorgeous.
Magic moments The whole day was perfect, however Matt says his favourite moment was standing under the cabana, taking in the sea, the beach and the fact that so many of our friends and family were there too, then turning around to see the bridal party walking down the beach. He started welling up at this point. I think that my favourite memory was standing and watching the beach party for a while, just taking in our brilliant guests dancing, chatting and laughing. It was very overwhelming having so many friends and family there, all having a lovely time.
On budget? We spent approximately £14,000. It was over budget, but while we were planning we knew that we wanted it all to be perfect and so weren’t too worried – but we didn’t go too mad!
The honeymoon Matt and I booked ourselves in to the Sentido Aegean Pearl Hotel, my bridesmaids and I stayed in a large room the night before the wedding, then Matt and I stayed on in a room with a private pool. A lot of our guests had come out a few days before the wedding so we had plenty of time with them all beforehand, but made sure we had some time on our own too. We said our goodbyes to friends a few days before we were due to fly home, to have some ‘us’ time.

Groomed to perfection Tradition dictates that the bridal gown is a secret until the happy couple walk down the aisle together, but what about the groom’s suit? Should your wife-to-be have some involvement in this choice, or should it be a surprise for her too?
“I object” to her involvement Planning a wedding can be stressful, and for one reason or another, a lot of the pressure often falls upon the bride. Take a load off her mind by promising to arrange your own suit (and possibly suits for the groom’s party) without her needing to lift a finger. She will probably be grateful to tick one thing off the list! The times, they are a-changing – and modern marriages often break old traditions: whether it’s personalising the vows, choosing a double-barrelled surname, or getting hitched abroad, there’s no need to stick to convention any more. Maybe your bride would like to be surprised by your dashing outfit too. If you are highly opinionated, and typically don’t have long to ponder a decision, you might be happiest choosing your suit alone. You may end up choosing a suit you don’t completely love if you’re distracted by other people’s opinions. After all, your bride will get to choose her own outfit.
“I do” to her participation Some men love nothing more than the fashion-forward eye of a woman to help dress them. If she typically helps you choose your work clothes or weekend outfits, then you might feel most comfortable with your fiance’s support in choosing the groom’s suit. It’s your big day, so why start taking risks now if you are not used to it? It’s hard to let go of the reins sometimes. If she’s feeling tense about everything being perfect on the day, it might help her feel relaxed and in control if she knows that you’ve got a super sexy suit lined up, and not something that will make her grimace. Let her come along to the choosing and fitting, if only to put her mind at ease.
‘We do” to making a joint decision Don’t let the wedding plans become a boring, logistical task of seating plans and deposits. Remember why you are getting married in the first place, and make the most of the excitement-building before the big day. Choosing your suit together could be a fun and romantic way to spend some time together, and get you both feeling giddy about the wedding. Ultimately, it’s important to think of your personality types and what would make you both the happiest. Talk about it together, and whatever you decide, have a blast choosing the snappiest suit out there!

POP the Question
The facts… Where can I get married abroad?
Where do you fancy? You name it, and you can probably get married there. Weddings can be arranged in more than 30 countries around the world, and in many different settings.
How much will it cost?
Tour operators Kuoni are destination wedding specialists. They say the average price of their destination weddings, including honeymoon, is less than £3,000 – a small cost compared to the average UK wedding! Prices vary considerably for a wedding or vow renewal package; this is paid as a supplement to your holiday package price. Some resorts offer free wedding packages, so bargain hunters should check their options with tour operators.
The legals… Will our marriage be legally recognised in the UK?
Yes. Your wedding will be registered in the country it takes place in and is completely legal under British law, so you don't need to register your marriage again when you get home.
What are the legal requirements?
They vary from country to country, but in general you must be over 20 years of age and need your British passports, original copies of your Birth Certificates and documentation regarding any previous marriages or if you are widowed or divorced. Some countries have additional costs for legalisation and translation of documents. If you book through a tour operator, such as Kuoni, Thomas Cook, Turquoise and Sandals, your dedicated wedding team will give you full details at the time of your booking.
Are there residency restrictions in some countries?
Yes, so you need to check residency restrictions with your tour operator or wedding planner. The most difficult countries are Spain (40 days residency), France (40 days) and Australia (one month and one day); however, there are no restrictions in Antigua, Jamaica or Las Vegas.
What name should I travel under?
We asked dedicated wedding planners to give us a selection of their most frequently asked questions… 94 www.BridesAbroad.tv
If you are getting hitched abroad you can't change the name on your passport until you return home. You must travel in your maiden name and your return airline tickets need to be in the same name as your passport or they will not be valid. Of course you can change your passport to your married name once you are back home in the UK and are in possession of your Marriage Certificate.
When will I receive my Marriage Certificate?
It will either be handed to you at the resort or sent via registered post to your home address. Don't panic if it takes a while to arrive – this is normal, especially if you marry in Jamaica where it can take up to 12 months! If you get married in certain countries, like Mexico and the Dominican Republic it will need to be translated, which will cause extra delay. For more information visit direct.gov.uk and search under passports.
The ceremony… Can we invite guests to our wedding?
Of course! Some hotels even offer reduced rate weddings for more than four guests. Remember to order extras for your guests, such as more wine, a larger wedding cake or extra buttonholes. If the wedding couple is staying at an All Inclusive resort, they will need to buy oneday passes for guests staying at other hotels, and in adults-only resorts you will need to ask special permission for children to attend the wedding on a day pass. All this can be organised at the resort by your wedding planner.
When do I meet the resort's wedding planner?
One to three days after your arrival at your resort. Your wedding planner will sort out the fine details of your wedding, from Champagne to the icing on your cake, and check your documentation so that you can relax as the arrangements are done on your behalf. Once the local registrar is happy your paperwork is in order, your wedding planner will give you a date and time for the ceremony and send out invitations to your guests.
Where will our ceremony take place?
The hotel wedding planner will show you the locations to choose from – usually in the gardens of your hotel, or in a decorated wedding pavilion. If you are marrying in Europe you may choose to exchange vows in the local church or town hall, or in Las Vegas, a wedding chapel. The hotel wedding co-ordinator will show you the locations to choose from. It's unusual to have a ceremony on the beach, but many couples take beach photographs after the ceremony.
Who will be at the ceremony?
Most overseas weddings are civil ceremonies, in the style of registry office services, unless a religious ceremony has
been pre-arranged. The ceremony will be conducted by a Judge, Celebrant, Minister or Registrar. You will need two to four witnesses, who could be anyone from your wedding guests to people you have met on the beach the previous day. Your wedding planner will be there too, to ensure your day goes without a hitch.
The important bits… How should I transport my wedding dress?
We recommend wedding outfits should be packed in a hard suitcase or strong box, as they will be placed in the hold of the plane. It might be an idea to contact your airline for more information. Generally, there is no extra baggage allowance for wedding outfits. You can also take out extra insurance to cover the transportation of your dress.
Can I choose my flowers?
Absolutely! At the resort, your wedding planner will show you photos of bouquets for you to make a selection. Your wedding bouquet and his buttonhole are included in your wedding package, but extra flowers and buttonholes can be ordered for guests and bridesmaids.
What about the music?
You can request whatever music you prefer and it will be arranged for you – from a DJ playing your favourite songs to calypso bands. If you prefer you can pack a CD with your chosen musical selection, which can be played at your wedding.
Will I have a cake?
A wedding cake is included in wedding packages; this is usually a sponge cake with white icing. You can add your own decorations, and even arrange for an upgraded cake. Sandals Resorts offer a
choice of themed weddings, which feature colour-co-ordinated cakes to match the chosen wedding palette.
Who will take care of my hair and makeup?
Every bride wants to look her best and fortunately many hotels have hair and beauty services with makeup artists on hand. Even if they don't, your wedding planner can arrange for experts to come to the hotel.
Can I arrange for a good wedding photographer?
At your pre-wedding meeting, your wedding planner will show you examples of local photographers work so that you can choose the style that suits you best. Your video can also be arranged when you get to the resort. Photographer and DVD are usually at extra cost; they are rarely included in your wedding package.
What about the wedding dinner?
If you have a group of guests at your wedding, a gala dinner is usually arranged as part of your wedding package. If it's just the two of you, your wedding planner will arrange a candle-lit dinner for two in a romantic location.
We want friends and family at the ceremony but can we be alone for our honeymoon?
Absolutely. Simply ask your guests to stay at a different hotel close by, or transfer to another hotel after the ceremony.
And finally… How can I find out more?

BREXIT – know your rights!
How does Brexit affect air travel to your wedding or honeymoon destination? It was an historic day in European history when the UK voted to leave the EU. But does that mean big changes for wedding parties and honeymooning Brits travelling abroad? Many may find themselves scratching their heads and wondering if they will still be protected by EC261 air passengers rights laws. Flight delays happen, but that doesn’t mean passengers have to accept them. You may be entitled to compensation if your flight was delayed, cancelled or overbooked within the last three years. In order to make it easier for those flying into and out of the UK, Airhelp, a company that provides legal advice to airline passengers flying within the European Union, has answered travelers’ top three questions about air passenger rights and Brexit:
1
Am I still entitled to compensation for a delayed flight leaving from, or going to, the UK?
Although the UK has voted to leave the EU, it will take at least two years for this change to officially become effective. So for now, if you are flying into, or out of, the UK, regardless of the airline, then you are still protected under EC261 air passengers’ rights laws.
2
What will happen when the UK does leave the EU?
Only time can tell what is in store for the UK and EU once the Brexit becomes official.
As with many other EU laws, members of the UK government will determine if it would like to keep EC261 on the books or if it would rather adapt a new UK law that mirrors EC261. These decisions will depend on how the UK government will choose to negotiate the terms of its new relationship with the EU. 96 www.BridesAbroad.tcom
About AirHelp AirHelp is a technology company that provides legal services to airline passengers who have experienced a flight cancellation, delay or overbooking when travelling into or out of the European Union. Under EU Regulation 261/2004, airline passengers could be entitled to compensation if their flight was disrupted while departing from or arriving to an EU member state with an EU-registered airline. The company’s services are meant to educate and empower travellers to make full use of their consumer rights, and in turn raise the level of customer care provided by airlines. The legislation does not apply to flights that were disrupted by extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline’s control such as weather-related reasons or airport strikes. However, the law’s jurisdiction includes flights dating back as far as five years. Airline passengers can use the AirHelp website or smartphone app to check their flight eligibility at no cost. www.airhelp.com
3
What will happen to my passenger rights after the official Brexit?
It’s hard to know exactly what will happen once the UK officially leaves the EU. While we can’t speculate on what’s to come, Airhelp can tell you that you will still have some level of protection under EC261, even if the UK government disposes of the law. For those passengers travelling into or out of the UK on an EU-based airline – like Ryanair, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, Alitalia, etc. – then by law you will still be covered by EC261. According to the law, if you are flying with an EU airline, then you are still entitled to compensation if your flight is delayed, cancelled or overbooked by the airline.
Final thoughts While Brexit raises many questions for Brits going abroad and for Europeans travelling to the UK, it’s safe to say that, for the time being, there is no need to worry about the loss of air passenger rights in the UK. If you’d like to know more about your rights, the AirHelp customer support team is available to answer any questions honeymooners planning their air flights may have. Perfect planning
Put your feet up and let your wedding planner organise the wedding of your dreams Don’t let the stress of organising your big day overshadow your wedding – especially if you want to marry in an exotic location and are unsure about the procedures. Why put yourself under unnecessary pressure when you can ease the burden by handing all the hard work over to a professional wedding planner? Today’s wedding planners work on a global landscape that includes not only virtually every country in the world but also any kind of wedding in locations that include beaches, castles, cliffs and desert islands.
Destination weddings without the stress Lisa Burton of the Bridal Consultant (www.thebridalconsultants.com) specialises in organising destination weddings in some of Europe’s most popular destinations, including Santorini, Zykinthos, Italy, Croatia, Crete, Malta and Ibiza from her base in the UK. She says: “Destination Weddings should be just as unique and special as those for couples getting married here in the UK, and this is the principle on which the Bridal Consultant was born. We continually aim for the skies and only use the best suppliers in the industry, meaning that the weddings we organize will be the best they possibly can be.” The Bridal Consultant was formed in 2004 after Lisa’s own wedding in Scotland was not exactly ‘planned to perfection’. Her whole wedding experience left Lisa thinking there was certainly a market for a conscious and caring wedding planning company, and from this The Bridal Consultant was born. It is, however, important to remember that the wedding planning business is unregulated. Lisa advises that couples 98 www.BridesAbroad.com
need to make sure they are happy with the firm they book and she recommends that they ask for customer testimonials and references, and check them. She says: “We’ve been established for 12-years now and we know the best places and the right people. But not everyone does. I would emphasise how important it is to know who you’re dealing with before you sign up,” says Lisa.
Wedding confidence Many couples imagine their wedding under a blue sky with the sun shining and beautiful natural surroundings, but don’t feel confident having a Wedding abroad. “We are here to help you organize a relaxed and stress-free Wedding Day,” says Margarita Kasfiki, whose company www.weddingsrhodes.com started planning weddings on the island of Rhodes in 2004. “Our experience grows every year and we try to offer the best that Rhodes has to offer to the couples that trust us for their Special Day. We offer civil ceremonies, Orthodox Weddings, vow renewal and we also organize parties and events,” she says. Unlike many wedding planners, Weddingsrhodes.com can also help with your travel and accommodation arrangements through their sister company, Mediterranean Holidays Ltd, so brides and grooms to be can simply relax and let their entire wedding be planned without all the stress.
Local knowledge For couples on a budget, getting married in Cyprus is a surprisingly inexpensive option where weddings can cost up to 75 per cent
less than in the UK. The Paphos Wedding Company can organize weddings on the Mediterranean island to suit all budgets, from civil services to church ceremonies and renewal of vows – and, as a bonus, good weather is virtually guaranteed! The Paphos Wedding Company is a British-owned, family-run business based in Cyprus with many years experience in wedding planning and, because they know the area and its local businesses well, they can work with a small selection of carefully chosen suppliers for flowers, wedding cakes, photography and table decorations. These suppliers are chosen because of their value-for-money, reliability and the high-standard of their products and services. The company’s policy is to arrange only a small number of weddings each week so that each couple gets a high level of personal service. www.paphosweddingcompany.co.uk
Relax and enjoy! When it comes to costing it all out, planners operate different systems. Most create various level packages that you will be free to customise according to your requirements. You will have the choice of whether you ask your planner to arrange flights and accommodation or whether you do it yourselves. You can even ask the planner to deal with invitations and RSVPs, or just ask them to arrange the ceremony and reception. Just one word of caution: some less reputable companies will try to add an additional charge of up to 20 per cent to the total cost of your wedding package. You should be able to see precisely what you are paying for in full, transparent detail. Then relax and let the experts do what they do best – create your perfect wedding!

Ask the planners!
We asked Lisa Burton of The Bridal Consultant wedding planning service to answer your burning questions on planning a wedding abroad.
Fussy bridesmaids The planning for my wedding in Ibiza has been stress-free so far, apart from the search for my bridesmaids’ dresses. I have four bridesmaids and each of them has a completely different taste and style, I just can’t seem to please them all. Do you have any advice on what I should do? Jenny, Isle of Skye
Hi Jenny It’s important that all of the girls feel comfortable on the day, after all, they will be the centre of attention when walking down the aisle before you, so of course they will want to look great and feel great too. Have you thought about dressing them in Two Birds multi-way dresses? You choose the colour and the material will be the same, keeping a uniform look. With over 15 ways to wrap the dress, this means your bridesmaids can choose the style they want to go for! Alternatively if you want to give them more freedom and are having a more relaxed theme, then you could let them choose their own dresses but give them a brief of what colour and style you would like the dresses to be.
Choosing where to marry I’m feeling really overwhelmed with the
number of beautiful wedding venues I have to choose from. I am looking at Greece, Cyprus and Croatia, but I’m struggling to narrow the destinations and venues down as we’re not entirely sure what we want. I just know that I want a wedding abroad with the sun shining surrounded by my friends and family. Do you have any tips on how I can narrow everything down and finally decide on a destination and venue? Melinda, Dorset
Hi Melinda There are so many amazing venues out there! The first thing you need to think about is your budget and your guest list. Be realistic about what you can afford and how many guests you want to come along with you. This will narrow things down straight away, as some destinations and venues are more expensive than others. Once you have decided on this, the next thing you need to think about is the distance your guests will be willing to travel and what month you would like the wedding to take place. Think about those guests with children, are they going to be willing to take them out of school? The final decision comes down to what type of venue you really want. Sea view or city-scape? Exclusive or non-exclusive? Modern or rustic? These are all questions
Contact Lisa:

you need to ask yourself before deciding on a venue, after all this is your big day so it’s important that you make the right decision. And keep looking! Photos from real weddings will help you see what the venues are really like
First dance nerves So, it’s no secret that I have two left feet and as the bride I am extremely nervous about our First Dance! He’s telling me not to worry and that it will be OK, but I can’t stop thinking about it. How can I prepare? Janette, Eastbourne
Hi Janette Don’t worry! You’re not the only bride to have First Dance nerves, this is common and can be overcome. If you’re worried about not being the best of dancers then be sure to keep it simple. Decide on a song that you and your H2B both like, and don’t include any jumps or swings! Another solution is not to have a First Dance as such, but to have a song to get everyone up dancing, this way not all eyes are on you! However, if you really would like to have a song and dance dedicated to the two of you then I would recommend taking a few lessons before your wedding, after all, practice makes perfect!

Glamping in
FRANCE
A touring honeymoon in France? Isle have some of that! Says Martin Cody-Owen 116 www.BridesAbroad.com
What better way to start married life, than to share a romantic adventure together? Well nothing could be more fun than a road trip – especially if it involves camping, towing a touring caravan or hiring a classic VW camper van or a luxury motorhome On our bucket list my wife and I wanted empty beaches, roaring ocean waves, beautiful countryside, fine wine and long hot summer days. We found it all in France! While other honeymooners may be perfectly happy to fly half way round the world to some exotic corner in search of paradise, not everyone wants to sit on a mind-numbing longhaul flight for hour after hour. So we decided there was no better way to discover the world than to start closer to home, and cross the English Channel to explore the delights of our nearest continental neighbour. France has everything to offer – deep blue oceans, pure white sandy beaches, snow-covered mountains, breath-taking countryside, shimmering lakes and wide-open, empty roads. But one thing that never ceases to amaze us about France is just how big it is. It’s huge! But that’s great! More for us to explore! We decided to block out two weeks and investigate Southern Brittany and the Vendee coast down the western edge of France. Our aim was to discover a less-travelled corner of France where the pace of life is slower. We wanted quaint villages, real fishing harbours and all the authentic sounds and smells of France, far from the crowds, where the Atlantic Ocean waves crash onto sun-drenched, windswept shores. And if we saw a few wizened old beret-wearing cyclists in stripy shirts, with strings of onions around their necks, we knew we would be in the right place!
Getting there There are so many options for getting across to France. It’s easy and cheap to fly from all over the UK into Southern Brittany with daily flights on budget airlines into Brest, Dinard, Rennes, Nantes and Quimper. It’s also very relaxing to take the Eurostar via the Eurotunnel into Paris and then the super-efficient SNCF high-speed trains to whisk you to your west coast destination. But we preferred to take the excellent Brittany Ferry sailing overnight in a snug cabin from Plymouth, arriving fresh and ready for adventure in Roscoff on the northern coast – the ideal port for easy access to the many delights of western France. www.brittany-ferries.co.uk In our opinion, there is nothing more exciting than a ferry crossing – it’s a bit like a mini-cruise with an eclectic group of passengers to add to the colourful mix, including rucksack-carrying hikers, cyclists with their heavily-laden bicycles ready for two-wheeled adventure, the ubiquitous mullet wearing Dutch lorry drivers with their Crocs and socks, and motorcycles and cars loaded to the gunnels with camping gear – then there are caravanners, like us, who tow their luxury homes-from-home behind them. We opted for a three-destination vacation, taking the chance to explore three islands on the Atlantic coast - the Ile d’Oleron, Ile de Re and Ile Noirmoutier. www.BridesAbroad.com 117
Isle d’Oleron Oleron is an unspoilt island half-way down the west coast in southern Brittany, criss-crossed with miles of cycle paths and perfect for exploring the endless, empty, sandy beaches, revered by lovers of sand-yachting and kite-surfing. We opted for a campsite run by Indigo, one of the better-managed site operators, who offer campsites in beautiful, natural locations. www.camping-indigo.com/en/campsite-in-france Set in natural pine forests, hiring one of their own canvass tents means going back to the original values of camping (simple, friendly and sociable holidays in a natural environment). We maneuvered our caravan into a space alongside an array of both privately owned tents and Indigo’s own rented tents, and set up camp in the shade of the pines. It’s a very relaxed affair and we soon got into the pace of camping life, ordering fresh baguettes and croissant in the mornings and eating alfresco under the stars at night. Isle d’Oleron is easily accessible after a day-long drive of around 300 miles from the ferry terminal on the northern coast. But we decided on arrival that it had been well worth the six-hour journey behind the wheel. There’s plenty to do on the island, which is best discovered by bicycle. Cycle paths weave through natural forests for miles and it’s possible to emerge through dramatic dunes onto spectacular deserted beaches – as we discovered to our amazement! Wonderful for lovers of picnics, solitude, fresh air and the ocean’s roar. Many visitors book one of the sailing excursions available on a yacht or catamaran and sail out to explore the famous Fort Boyard, a brutal edifice in the middle of the sea. Built over a period of nearly two hundred years in the Napoleonic era to guard the coast
118 www.BridesAbroad.com
of France, but little used. After abandonment, and dereliction for 100 years, it became the focus of a popular adventure game show, hosted by actor Leslie Grantham, better known as Dirty Den from East Enders! Not a lot of people know that! Another popular pastime in Ile d’Oleron is surfing on the Atlantic waves – and there are many surf schools to help you to master the exhilarating pastime. Or if you don’t fancy getting wet, perhaps try Char a Voile (sand-yachting) on the wide expanses of Le GrandVillage-Plage. It’s all about the outdoors! The island also offers horseriding tours – the perfect way to discover the island at a slower pace. At night the little harbours come alive with quaint bars and restaurants overlooking yachts and fishing boats, enticing customers with lilting jazz, laughter and fabulous aromas of garlic and fresh seafood.
For one looking for somewhere special to stay
Cruise in style to France or Spain Stunning beaches, glorious countryside, delicious cuisine and a truly romantic atmosphere. France and northern Spain are magical destinations for making memories you’ll treasure forever. Whether you’re looking for a five-star honeymoon, accommodation for your guests, or even just a pre-wedding shopping trip, our wide choice of holidays and breaks are sure to have something for you. Isle de Re Our next stop was a few hours drive north to the up-market island of Ile de Re, close to the historic port of La Rochelle. For decades, this immaculate corner of France’s Atlantic coast has been a popular bolthole for well-heeled Parisians who flock here each summer, swelling the winter population of 20,000 to more than 200,000. But it never feels busy. It’s the Parisians’ version of the Hamptons, offering a tranquil, low-key and effortlessly chic antidote to city life. This un-spoilt island boasts dunes, pine forests and picturesque, yacht-filled harbours fringed with bustling cafes and seafood restaurants – Ile de Re Oysters are famous the world over – the tiny island produces more than 6000 tons each year. One of life’s simple joys is to sit outside a harbor-side bistro in the capital St Martin, with an espresso or a chilled glass of crisp white wine and a plate of oysters and watch the well-dressed world go by. Lovely! For all visitors, the favoured way to travel around this flat island is by bicycle. Everybody, and I mean everybody, rides a bike here and outlets for cycle hire are plentiful. The cycle paths link immaculate, whitewashed villages to beautiful beaches, hugging the coastline with dramatic ocean views one minute before sweeping through aromatic fields of crops the next. It’s a fun and relaxing lifestyle. Nothing flashy or trashy here - just an abundance of timeless cool and a civilized, stylish audience. If you fancy something a little more civilized than a few nights under canvass, try ‘Glamping’ in a wooden hut at www.la-grainetiere.com Or maybe spoil yourselves with a few nights in a tiny hotel amidst the bustle of the island’s tiny capital St Martin. We recommend the Corps de Guarde www.lecorpsdegarde.com. The old Guard-house built in the XV11 century right on the harbour looking over the ocean.
120 www.BridesAbroad.com
Ile-de Noirmoutier
Next we drove another three hours further north up the coast to Ilede Noirmoutier – an island, which lies at the very northern tip of the Vendée and stretches out into the Atlantic. It can be reached either by car via a road bridge or, for the more adventurous (or fool-hardy) a 4.5 km causeway that is passable only at low tide! The whole island is low lying, its highest point being just 13 m above sea level, so it’s a cyclist’s paradise. It boasts an abundance of glorious sandy beaches from north to south on the western, oceanfacing side and low rocky cliffs with small sandy coves along the northeast coastline. Noirmoutier is a popular, un-crowded destination with a pleasant semi-rural ambience. It is indeed a very laid back, well-kept and civilized place to be. We stayed at another Indigo campsite right on the beach. www.camping-indigo.com/fr. Thanks to its amazing beachside location it was very busy yet still totally chilled campsite with an eclectic mix of campers, from family groups to romantic couples. We cycled to the Chateau in Ville Noirmoutier and found a pretty market town with busy restaurants offering mouth-watering food. The French take their dining very seriously and adore their long, long lazy lunches. Moving round the island by car we found the cutest little whitewashed, green-shuttered villages along the coast and fabulous sandy beaches, overlooked by big detached houses with the grandeur of a bygone era. But we both agreed that cycling is, by far, the best way to explore. Honeymooning on the islands of western France is like taking a trip back in time - with its easy outdoor lifestyle, lung-fulls of fresh air and long warm summer days on un-crowded beaches. It’s like discovering a long lost, less complicated world, straight out of a 1950’s Enid Blyton novel. Lashings of fun! We sailed from Plymouth to Roscoff in Brittany aboard Brittany Ferries.
