Avalon Road. At about 3:45 a.m., an officer driving on Avalon Road spotted a vehicle parked in the grass on the west side of the road with both the headlights and turning signal on. The officer approached the vehicle and saw a man sleeping across the two front seats. The officer then knocked on the window, and the man woke up only to look at the officer and return to sleep. The officer again knocked, which failed to the awaken the man. With the officer’s third attempt, the man sat up, grabbed his phone, looked out the window, picked up a Guinness bottle and threw it in the back seat. At a DUI testing center, breath tests revealed the man’s blood alcohol level ranged from 0.201 and 0.217. JUNE 4

of his first priorities is getting to know the students and parents and ensuring effective, transparent communication. “My whole career has been built on relationships, so my first priority is understanding both what’s successful at Bridgewater and what’s not working so we can grow what’s successful and make good decisions to fix what’s not working,” he said. “We’re a good school, but there’s always opportunities to grow academically. I do know that the foundation is here, the community is supportive here for us to be successful and it’ll be my job to communicate and build a collaborative culture where we’re focused on academics and have fun doing it.” And although Bridgewater is expected to grow to around 2,000 students this school year, it’s the smallest school at which Jackson has worked. “Every year I was at West Orange, we grew, so I’ve never not been at a big, growing school,” he said. “It’s kind of a natural thing for me to be at a big school. Bridgewater is 1,000 students less than I’m used to. I’m going to continue to do exactly what I was taught at West Orange when we grew to (more than) 4,000 kids, and at Osceola — I’m going to ensure an environment of acceptability and of safety.”

With safety as another priority, Jackson plans to ensure that every staff member possible is outside and around the students whenever they are outside the classroom. A key component of ensuring safety and mutual respect, he said, is getting to know the students and earning their trust. “The kids want a safe environment, and if they hear things and know it’ll be safe to communicate, then that avenue tends to create a climate and culture of safety and respect,” he said. “I’m going to do the best I can to create a culture there of mutual respect, building relationships with the kids, and that will foster an environment that feels smaller than we are.” And although the school year just ended, Jackson already can’t wait for summer to be over so he can meet the teachers, students and parents. “I get to serve a community that cares deeply about their students and their school,” Jackson said. “What an awesome asset that is — to have parents who care and a community that can rally around the school. I am absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to serve this community, to serve the teachers that are here and to serve the students.”

A store manager told the officer they had witnessed the shoplifting suspect go into the beer cooler, select two 18-packs of Heineken and exit the business via the rear door without paying. The suspect then allegedly re-entered the store and grabbed a 12-pack case of Bud Light just to leave without paying again. The male suspect allegedly tried to steal $58.97 worth of beer. At about 7 p.m., lawenforcement officers responded to a call about shoplifting at a supermarket and spoke with a loss-prevention employee, who stated that a woman was seen trying to steal $81.41 worth of merchandise, including six Glade Air Freshener Refills and two mop refills. The woman was arrested and trespassed from the supermarket. OAKLAND JUNE 4

Remington Road. At about 4:45 a.m., an officer on patrol observed a white Ford Explorer stopped in the left-turn lane at an intersection. The vehicle, which had its turn signal on, remained at the intersection for about six light cycles. The officer and a backup officer approached the vehicle and observed a man asleep in the driver’s seat. Both officers made several attempts to wake the man up by knocking on the windows and doors. One officer used his sirens, which also did not work. After some time, the man awoke on his own and lowered the driver’s window. An officer noticed a strong odor of cannabis. The officer asked the man to exit the vehicle. The officer searched the car and found a clear bag containing cannabis. The man was placed under arrest.

ture of former Bridgewater Middle School Principal Lisa James to Lockhart Middle, the Orange County School Board announced the Bobcats’ new principal at its June 13 meeting. Andrew Jackson, a Winter Garden native, is leaving his position as assistant principal at Kissimmee’s Osceola High to take on the role. Jackson was born and raised in Winter Garden and graduated from West Orange High. He graduated from Florida State University in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in social science, and in 1997 returned to teach at WOHS. Four years into teaching social studies and ESE and coaching football at WOHS, Jackson obtained his master’s degree in education leadership from Nova Southeastern University. “My mentor, who is also a Winter Garden resident, is Mike Armbruster,” Jackson said. “He pulled me out of the classroom and made me an academic dean, and that’s what really transformed my career. If he hadn’t done that I’d probably still be teaching and coaching football.” After that, Jackson became an assistant principal at WOHS in 2007, where he served until 2014, when he took an assistant principal position at Osceola High. His interest in becoming Bridgewater’s new principal stemmed from his desire to return to an Orange County school so he could be closer to home. He lives in downtown Winter Garden, along with his wife and two young daughters, the oldest of whom will soon be a kindergartner at Dillard Street Elementary. “Because I knew my daughter was going to be in kindergarten, I started putting out feelers in Orange County just so I could be closer,” he said. “Nothing really interested me until I saw the Bridgewater job open up, and I decided to go full gusto. There’s just something about Winter Garden that is family oriented. ... I have a 5-year-old daughter and a 2-year-old daughter, and I couldn’t think of raising them anywhere else.” Now that he’s taken on the role of principal at Bridgewater, one

Will to survive Gunnar Bradshaw is sitting on his parents’ front porch, resting in an old barber chair, shirt off, shoes off, a bowl of homemade organic chicken noodle soup on his lap. He eats what he can these days, which isn’t much; chemotherapy has a way of making food taste terrible and making people nauseated. Every 15 minutes or so, a truck drives by, and the occupants honk or holler to Gunnar, a 20-yearold Winter Garden resident who learned earlier this month that he has bone cancer. He likes to keep to himself, so this sudden attention makes him uncomfortable. Ever since the West Orange community learned the resident — an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University senior on a baseball scholarship — was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, social-media sites such as Facebook and GoFundMe have been filled with updates on his condition. Family and friends have stepped up and organized a series of fundraisers to help his parents, Ronnie and Staci Bradshaw, with mounting medical bills.

tute, in Clermont, which scheduled Gunnar for an immediate MRI scan. The family was called back to the doctor’s office — after a long Memorial Day weekend — and was told it wasn’t his knee, but, in fact, his femur. A growth had been discovered on his thigh bone, and the doctor said it nearly wasn’t detected on the MRI because the scan concentrated on his knee. The Bradshaws held out hope that this was simply a benign growth, and their son continued with his scheduled four-day fishing trip with his buddies. “It was like a last hurrah before 29 weeks of hell,” Gunnar said. After his mini vacation, Gunnar and his parents headed to UF Health Shands Hospital, in Gainesville, last week for a battery of tests and scans. On Tuesday, June 13, a doctor took the Bradshaws into a private room to talk. “As soon as I saw the surgeon’s face, I knew,” Staci Bradshaw said. “I knew.” With the diagnosis of osteosarcoma, life changed for the family. “When I finally woke up and they walked in and Mom was bawling, I knew,” Gunnar said.

Gunnar is a second baseman for the Embry-Riddle Eagles, and when he started having knee pain two months ago, he attributed it to baseball, perhaps an issue with his meniscus. He iced his right knee twice a day and kept pain relievers in his system. “I kept powering through it, kept playing,” he said. He finally had his trainer look at it, and the two began working on the swollen knee. When he went home for the summer in early May, he went to West Orange High School to visit his old coach, Jesse Marlo, and to hit the ball with some of the highschool players. He noticed his right leg was shaking. A few days later, when he was playing golf, the same thing happened. His father insisted they pay a visit to the Sports Medicine Insti-

“I didn’t think this would ever happen to me,” said Gunnar, who will turn 21 in two weeks. “You don’t even think about cancer at 20 years old.” He is facing 10 weeks of chemotherapy, which will hopefully shrink the tumor, followed by the removal of about eight inches of his femur and a full knee replacement. After that, he faces 19 more weeks of chemo. “The doctor said right now the goal is to save his life and then his limb,” Staci Bradshaw said. “The doctor said, ‘We will get him as near to dead as possible and then bring him back.’” Friends and neighbors have shown tremendous support since the diagnosis, the Bradshaws said. “We are overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support from the community,” Staci Bradshaw said. “It has been amazing. It’s a blessing. … It’s very easy (for us) to give, and it’s hard to receive.” “It’s very humbling,” Ronnie Bradshaw added. Several of Gunnar’s good friends shaved their heads in a showing of solidarity. His dad did, too. Gunnar and Lane Cross, who had planned to get baptized this summer, bumped up their plans, and a baptism was held in Lake Butler the weekend before he left for Gainesville for his first treatment. Soon after the diagnosis, longtime family friend Rena Cross showed up with a hand-sanitizer station to place near their front door. On Sunday evening, Lisa Combs delivered a warm chunk of roast. Doctors recommended that Gunnar go on an all-organic diet. He must avoid acidic foods and raw meat, and the only soda he is allowed is Dr Pepper. “They said this cancer doesn’t play well with others,” Staci Bradshaw said. Organic food can be pricy, and the family is hoping to find someone willing to sponsor his diet until he’s cancer-free. He’s had trouble eating anything since his first rounds of chemo last week. “Food sounds delicious, but

College plans have been put on hold while Gunnar goes through treatment. He was a three-year letterman and two-year All-Metro baseball player at West Orange and is attending Embry-Riddle on a baseball scholarship. He has two years left of his scholarship and still plans to get in a year of his master’s degree after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus on management.

Embry-Riddle second baseman Gunnar Bradshaw has had to put his athletics and studies on hold while he fights bone cancer.

Staci Bradshaw has had to quit work to be with her son, so the family’s income will decrease. Meanwhile, medical expenses and those related to traveling and staying in Gainesville during Gunnar’s treatments will continue to rise. They still are paying for his college apartment. An email address has been set up for anyone interested in inquiring about making a donation: bradshawstrong39@gmail.com. Donations also can be made at gofundme.com/bradshawstrong39. Longtime friend Roni Waller set up the account to help with expenses. As of Monday afternoon, donations had surpassed $7,000. Any money left over after Gunnar’s treatments will be donated to another family with an osteosar® coma diagnosis, the family said. “I believe the GoFundMe account took off so quickly because although Winter Garden has dras+ grown over the years, (our tically families) have been here before it DOWN PAYMENT did so and we still maintain that SPECIAL* small-town family atmosphere New Patients Only through these friendships,” Waller said. “Gunnar has always been like a second son to me.”

court records show. Orange County Sheriff’s Office officials said Darby did not show up to court back in March 2017, when he was facing a 15-year sentence for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of cocaine. A warrant for his arrest was issued shortly after, and Winter Garden police and OCSO’s fugitive unit had since been working to locate him. The search ended at 6 a.m. Monday, when the Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force located Darby at his home on 1130 Lincoln Terrace. Jane Watrel, public information officer for OCSO, said deputies and FRFTF members saw Darby enter the house at about 6 a.m. He would not come outside when asked. Deputies tried multiple times to contact him via phone and by calling him outside, but Darby still refused. During the standoff, OCSO deputies evacuated the four homes surrounding Darby’s. “Because of the situation we wanted to take our time, which we normally do when we have barricaded suspects anyway, but this was a delicate situation,” Watrel said. “We called our SWAT team out about 9 a.m., three hours into it. When they rolled up to the house and made their presence known to him, he gave himself up peacefully.” The standoff ended at about 2:30 p.m. Darby’s girlfriend told

deputies he had three young children inside the house with him, which included his 7- and 9-yearold stepchildren and his 1-yearold biological child. No one was harmed during the standoff. “The children are fine; they are unharmed,” Watrel said. “It was frightening for them to see something like this, but we are very thankful that it all ended peacefully. Our SWAT guys did a fantastic job of what could have been a very difficult situation.” Court records show Darby has an ongoing criminal history dating back to May 1989, which includes 21 various criminal-felony cases, six misdemeanors and two domestic-violence incidents. Most recently, Darby was charged with driving with a suspended license after prior convictions and driving under the influence. Watrel said Darby had known he was being sought since March 15, when the warrant was issued. He is facing 15 years in prison. “He’s a serious, convicted felon,” Watrel said. “We don’t call in the Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force unless we’re dealing with someone who’s a serious felon. He has 21 convictions, he’s facing 15 years in prison, so this was a very delicate situation that our SWAT members had to face. They did a terrific job of mitigating this, getting him to give himself up, and the children are fine.”

The drawings from the meetings, he said, come easily to him, but other art forms do not. That is why Withers now spends much of his time learning a new set of artistic skills by taking classes. As a former architect, Withers spent 20 years traveling the world while designing luxury travel resorts for Marriott Vacation Club International. He currently is helping design the new town administration offices that town officials hope to build in the future, as well as the veterans memorial that will be located in front of town hall. “When I was in architecture most of my artistic expression came out through the architecture,” Withers said. “I’ve always drawn, but now that I’m retired, I have a lot more time to paint and draw.” Withers, whose mother was an art major, said he’s been drawing since he can remember. But now, he is dedicated to learning how to paint in a variety of different styles and with different materials he’s never had to use before — a transition which has presented unique challenges for someone with a formal architectural background. Currently, he is learning how to paint with a palette knife under the tutelage of Winter Garden artist Noreen Coop. “She’s a palette-knife painter, and architects don’t do paletteknife painting,” Withers said with a hearty laugh. “They do fine, thin lines. So it’s been fun to loosen up and get away from such formal training and everything else. It’s been a lot of fun, but it’s totally outside my realm of comfort.” Although outside his comfort zone, Withers has successfully painted many pieces, including nature, landscapes and conceptual art. Conceptual art has remained his favorite, because it

allows him to use his imagination to embed certain mathematical ideas and history into his masterpieces. His favorite is called “The Three Leonardos,” which hangs above the stairs in his home. “I tend to incorporate certain things from my architectural background,” Withers said. “I’m really interested in proportion and scale based on the Golden Mean and pi. … I incorporate a lot of history in my paintings.” Angela Withers, his wife and the president of the Henry Nehrling Society that overlooks the Nehrling Gardens in Gotha, said her favorite pieces of his are also those that are genuine products of his imagination. “My favorites are the ones that he puts all these ideas into where he follows his imagination,” Angela Withers said. “He has this remarkable imagination that he loves to use and share, and it’s one of the things that draws people to him and his paintings. … And he’s always been that way as long as I’ve known him. This is all fun for him. This is where he gets his energy from.” Contact Gabby Baquero at gbaquero@orangeobserver.com.

School is out, but Ocoee High’s gymnasium was filled with spectators, volunteers and basketball players Saturday, June 17 — all playing a role in keeping Bob Deronvil’s memory alive. Deronvil, a 2011 Ocoee High graduate, played on the school’s varsity team prior to beginning his first year at Northwood University in August 2011. But on Sept. 10, 2011, he suffered a fatal heart attack while playing basketball at the university. Nearly six years later, Deronvil’s friends, Milton Kerr and Amilcar Matus — along with Matus’s mother, Tanya Garcia — are keeping his legacy going through the Bob Deronvil Memorial Classic basketball game. This year’s game featured two teams of Deronvil’s former classmates playing in the name of their late friend. Spectators enjoyed concessions, entertainment from a disc jockey and the Ocoee High band, and a threepoint and dunk contest. All proceeds benefit the Bob Deronvil Scholarship fund, which Garcia and Matus established to carry on Deronvil’s legacy. The scholarship is awarded

They offer the possibility of a renewable source of replacement cells and tissues to treat diseases including macular degeneration, spinal cord injury, stroke, burns, heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, Type I diabetes, arthritis, burn victims, cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune conditions and many other conditions, including their use for the aesthetic purposes. Nowadays, most of the stem cells come from bone marrow, adipose/fat tissue and umbilical cord. Umbilical cord stem cells are by far more potent and effective at restoring the organ function.

Frequent Flyer Miles Each summer, high-school athletes from across the spectrum of sports hop into planes, trains and automobiles to show what they can do at destinations across the country.

STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

From August to May, highschool athletes hop on buses to play crosstown rivals. In June and July, those with aspirations of playing their respective sport in college trade in the school buses and crosstown rivals for airplanes and elite competition from around the nation. Whether it is through a club or travel team or as an individual through camps and other avenues, high-school athletes from throughout West Orange County recognize the value of the summer as a chance to get outside of Florida and show college scouts what they can do. So, whether it is someone such as recently graduated West Orange softball pitcher Lauren Mathis — whose summer destinations include New Jersey, Colorado and California — or a local travel baseball organization such as Power Baseball or the Elite City Grays, the summer is a time to rack up the frequent-flyer miles. “(Traveling in the summer) gives them that opportunity to compare themselves to kids from the rest of the country — which is pretty much realistically what they’re competing with for a scholarship,” said Jesse Marlo, head baseball

coach for West Orange High during the varsity season and one of the founders of the Power Baseball travel organization. Unlike the old days of sitting in the stands for high-school games, camps and high-profile travel tournaments provide an easy and accessible way for college scouts to observe a high volume of prospective athletes at once. That makes competing on travel circuits necessary. For certain sports, though, getting out of Florida has a secondary purpose. In a sport such as lacrosse, which is most popular in the Northeast, it is important for would-be elite players from Florida to go to where the game is gospel and show what they can do. “I would say that if you’re interested in playing lacrosse in college, it is a must that you compete out of state,” said Ann Bomleny, the lead coach and director for Storm Select Girls Lacrosse, which operates out of Dr. Phillips and includes girls from around the area. In the next few weeks, girls and teams from Storm Select will be competing at various stops in Maryland and Pennsylvania. Leo Ramirez — head water polo coach at Dr. Phillips High — is takSEE TRAVEL PAGE 14

After briefly tying the Sanford River Rats with a 5-3 record for first place last week, the Winter Garden Squeeze dropped two games to Sanford (7-3) and another to Altamonte Springs to fall to 5-6 at press time — good for third place a quarter of the way through the season. Next for the Squeeze is a trio of games against DeLand June 22 to 24.

2

Statistically for the Squeeze, Sadler Goodwin (Troy University) leads the team in hits (12) and RBIs (nine) while Kyle Corbin (BethuneCookman) has a team-high .429 batting average. On the mound, Lance Johnson (Troy University) has a 0.82 ERA in 11 innings of work and is tied with Nick Niarchos (High Point) with a team-best 11 strikeouts (0.93 ERA).

3

West Orange baseball alum Andrew Karp, currently a pitcher for the Florida State Seminoles, was selected in last week’s MLB Draft. Karp was picked in the 34th round (1,035th overall) by the Chicago Cubs.

4

Florida Little League District 14 All-Stars continues this week, with the tournaments for the Minors (10-and-under) and 11-and-under divisions. The Minors tournament will take place at Ocoee Little League, and the 11-andunder Tournament will take place at Winter Garden Little League. Both tournaments begin play June 22.

5

Scott Grove, a Winter Garden resident and the baseball coach at The First Academy, will serve as an assistant coach for the USA Baseball 14U National Team Development Program.

Jessica Porritt For almost six years, Jessica Porritt has been working as special populations trainer at Roper Family YMCA. There, she helps people who struggle with a variety of medical ailments, including diabetes, arthritis and cancer. Previously, she worked in a hospital providing rehabilitation to patients. Now, Porritt focuses her attention on helping her clients prevent medical problems.

Why do you enjoy helping people as a trainer? I love working with the people here at the Y, and that’s especially important because we work with communities. I came from sick care as a clinic exercise physiologist, which was very similar to being a trainer, to health care. Why did you decide to become a trainer? Our world is changing to being more proactive. I wanted people to understand how to help prevent things from happening to their bodies. What I’m doing now is more meaningful than working in the sick care realm.

THE BASICS

HOMETOWN: Grand Blanc, Michigan TRAINING LOCATION: Roper Family YMCA SPECIALITY: Special populations training, including diabetes and arthritis, and post-rehabilitation

Did you always want to work in the healthcare field? I’m a nurturer by nature, so it just fit. I also come from a family of nurses and physical therapists, but I didn’t want to go that route. I didn’t want to work with people who didn’t already feel their best. What motivates you to come to work every day? The connection to the people. My clients are not just clients; they’re family members. What is one tip you give to members? Set goals. It’s not necessarily what they’re doing, but why they are doing it. So if they know why they want to lose weight, the how will follow shortly after. What is your favorite TV show? Right now my favorite is “Chicago Med.” If you could have one superpower, what would it be? Probably the power to enlighten people so they could see their big picture. What is your favorite sports team? Anything Michigan. You can take the girl out of Michigan, but you can’t take Michigan out of the girl. — BRITTANY GAINES

BY THE NUMBERS

Ocoee finishes as runner-up in District 14 tournament STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

For many Little Leaguers in West Orange, District 14’s Tournament of Champions is their first “All-Stars” experience. The tournament for 9-andunder All-Star teams gives the youngsters one of their first tastes of playing against competition from different leagues. Often, those core groups of youngsters will continue on and play together again as 10-, 11- and 12-year-olds. With that in mind, the current group of 9-year-olds from Ocoee Little League is off to a roaring start. Ocoee’s Tournament of Champions team went 4-2 at the event last week, which was hosted by South Lake Little League. Ocoee’s only losses came against Dr. Phillips Little League; once in pool play and again in the championship. Otherwise, the boys from Ocoee outscored teams from Winter Garden, South Lake and Windermere (which fields two All-Stars teams because of the league’s size) by a combined 51 runs. Still, manager Chris Pedri-

nan said there was more to the team’s success than swinging a big stick at the plate. “They also backed it up with defense,” Pedrinan explained. “We ran a lot — we were very aggressive on the bases, for sure.” After winning three of its first four games in pool play, Ocoee met Winter Garden — which had also started the event with a record of 3-1 — on the final day of pool play. Given the standings, the winner would advance to play Dr. Phillips in the championship game the next day, and Pedrinan says his boys were pumped for the big showdown — a showdown they won, 10-5. “It was an exciting game; they came out really fired up,” Pedrinan said. Now, this group of All-Stars will look to build on their success in the years to come, knowing they are off to an impressive start as a group. “It’s for sure something to build on,” Pedrinan said. “That core will definitely play together for a while.”

ing his 16-under YCF Water Polo team to the Los Angeles area for a similar reason. Ramirez’s current team, which features athletes from Dr. Phillips, West Orange, Bishop Moore and Lake Mary, is going to the place where the competition is at its stiffest. “Especially California — it’s the mecca of water polo in the United States,” Ramirez said. Athletes often travel solo, as well. Olympia High senior Joe Milton, a quarterback for the Titans football team who is committed to Michigan for college, was in Southern California last weekend as part of the Elite 11 quarterback competition. Tanner Ingle, a defensive back for the Dr. Phillips football team

who has scholarship offers from dozens of college programs, has been traveling around the country for college visits and camps. This weekend, Tanner and his family will visit Boston, where he will get a chance to check out Harvard and Boston College. Recently, Ingle was in South Carolina on the campus of Clemson for a camp. “It’s exciting; (there is) always good competition,” Ingle said. In addition to helping to facilitate a path to a college career, traveling during the summer can serve as a preview of a college career where teams and athletes often are flying around the country for road games. “Just the whole idea that we’re going there for a reason and to try and keep it businesslike (is

valuable),” Ramirez said. “That will get them ready for college, because on a college trip, that’s what it’s all about.” Many travel coaches also make a point to encourage the athletes and their families to enjoy their trips and the destinations. “I want them to have time to enjoy the experience,” Bomleny said. As for the coaches, although there is obviously much planning that goes into the trips, it also can be a nice getaway. “It’s fun — it’s enjoyable,” Ramirez said. “We’ve been very lucky with great kids, and some of the parents do travel with us. It’s a nice break.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

has become a competitive passion. Although she regularly practices other types of dance — for instance, she just began a threeweek ballet-based intensive at Florida State University — she has become dedicated to the craft of Scottish Highland dancing after taking it up at age 9. “It’s a lot of jumping, so you have to have a lot of stamina and you have be able to jump high and elongate your legs — it’s mostly stamina and strength,” McHale said. “People say I have a lot of power, so I’m able to do dances for a long time and make it look easy.” For Scott, who took up the style at age 6, it has become a fun way to branch out and make new acquaintances. “I like how we can meet different people when we go to different competitions,” Scott said. The two girls, both ranked among the top 100 in the country in their respective age groups, each have heightened aspirations as they return to the national championships. Although they compete at different levels, they practice together and say the in-house competition has been beneficial.

“Courtney is a really good dancer, so it is always nice to have somebody to look up to,” Scott said. For more information about Oakland’s Centre for Dance & the Performing Arts, visit dancecdpa. com or call (407) 877-3388.

Now, the studio can claim a first: Courtney McHale placed first in the 16 and under-18 division at the Southeast Regional Championships in Savannah, Georgia, last month. That distinguishes McHale, 15, as the first champion to train under teacher/coach Dr. Kathryn Austin. The impressive achievement came as a pleasant surprise for McHale, a rising junior at West Orange High, after several years of being a contender for the title. “It was very exciting, and I didn’t expect it,” McHale said, acknowledging a tough, competitive field that she had to beat. McHale wasn’t alone in having a successful showing at the Southeast Regional, either. Maggie Scott, an incoming sixth-grader at SunRidge Middle, placed second in the 10 and under-12 age group, meaning both girls have qualified for USIR 2017 Highland Dance Championships in July in Salt Lake City, Utah. “It’s always a nice feeling when you qualify, so I was happy,” said Scott, 11.
