Are you following the recycling rules?
RECYCLING FEES Central Florida municipalities have historically been able to deliver recyclable materials to Orange County facilities at no cost, but Orange County spokeswoman Jamie Floer said there will be a cost for the municipalities soon under a new, upcoming contract for recycling processing. Currently, the cost to dispose of normal household trash at the county transfer station is $33.60 per ton, Krug said. In Ocoee, the residential fee for twice-weekly trash, weekly yard waste and every other week recycling collection is $252 annually.

For some, sifting through information about proper recycling practices and keeping up with new policies and procedures can become a tedious task. Some might even relate to feelings of fatigue when learning about the various rules that govern proper recycling etiquette and give up entirely or resort to posting a social-media rant — particularly if it feels like one’s efforts to be a responsible citizen is being hindered by sanitation workers who dump non-recyclable items they find in a recycling bin on the curb. But that’s exactly what Ocoee resident Danna Houghtaling and others who expressed their outrage on the Ocoee Rants, Raves and Reviews Facebook page said happened to them. “That morning, I saw the recycling truck pull up, and the next thing I know, he was throwing garbage out of the recycling bin, and by the time I put my shoes on to go outside and see what he was doing, he was gone,” Houghtaling said. “But there were newspapers and
OCOEE
boxes strewn all over the street that were previously in my recycling bin. No note or anything.” Previously, Houghtaling said, she’d been left a note informing her plastic bags were not allowed in the bin and she stopped including them, but after sifting through her garbage that day to figure out what she’d done wrong, she was still perplexed and decided to call the city’s sanitation supervisor, Ronald Moore. Thirty minutes later, Moore arrived and informed her the plastic toy lawnmower she had placed in the bin was a non-acceptable item and that the sanitation worker is instructed to take out nonrecyclable items from a bin. After Houghtaling shared her experience on social media, which she said ended with the presence of law enforcement and the alleged use of a vulgar hand gesture from the sanitation supervisor, many sympathized with her experience, claiming similar scenarios had happened to them. City officials mentioned Houghtaling’s post during a City Commission meeting in May and said they would make extra efforts
to educate residents about recycling protocols. “Ocoee has the (recycling) program information on our website,” said Steve Krug, Ocoee’s public works director. “We have included articles in the city’s quarterly News to You/Ocoee Connections mailers, provided inserts in the water bills, attached the information to recycle carts and door to door education.” Krug emphasized how important education is when it comes to recycling to make sure residents’ efforts aren’t in vain. In Orange County, if there are non-recyclable items in a recycling cart, the cart is tagged and left behind for the customer, said Orange County Spokeswoman Jamie Floer. If a truckload is contaminated with 15% or more of the wrong items, she added, that load can be rejected and end up in the landfill, wasting residents’ efforts. “Education is very important as a single non-recyclable item in a truckload can cause a whole truck to be considered ‘contaminated’ and rejected, wasting the efforts of those who properly recycle,” Krug said.

local government officials with only two options: Ban all dispensaries or give up the right to regulate them. As written, the state law authorizes a county or municipality to ban medical marijuana retail facilities. However, if the local government chooses to not ban medical marijuana dispensaries, it is prohibited from establishing limits on the number and location of such facilities. However, Winter Garden City Manager Mike Bollhoefer said the city’s reasons for considering a ban do not involve the restrictive regulations but rather the risk of inviting a potential increase in crime, as well as the lack of a need for a physical retail store. “There have been studies that show that for some reason the dispensaries lead to an increase in crime in the surrounding areas of the dispensary ... and we don’t see any reason that we should have to take on that risk,” Bollhoefer said. “Because, as I stated, the marijuana growers can just deliver it to anyone who has a prescription.” Winter Garden is home to Knox Nursery, which has a state license to grow medical cannabis for home delivery and has been doing just that since it unveiled its new laboratory and greenhouse in December 2016. Winter Garden is currently accepting design proposals for its property located downtown at 270 W. Plant St.. The property, which the city purchased in 2000, temporarily housed the city’s Planning and Zoning Department before it was moved within City Hall. City staff now hopes to sell it to a developer who will use it for office space, retail stores and/or a restaurant. Winter Garden City Manager Mike Bollhoefer said the city has always had the intention to sell the property, but it will decide who to sell it to based on what they submit for the building designs, which are due by 2 p.m. Aug. 7.
source, fire station and the local fire department’s Insurance Service Office rating. Ranked on a scale of one to 10, with a rating of one being the best, the efficiency and professionalism of your local fire department can have a drastic effect on your bill because ISO ratings are gathered by various insurance companies to calculate residential and commercial insurance rates. However, Ocoee and Windermere residents who are serviced by the Ocoee Fire Department have nothing to worry about. Residents may even be eligible for lower insurance premiums as a result of the department’s recently attained ISO class 1 rating. The department, which had a class two rating since about 2012, was recently reevaluated. The department’s reevaluation resulted in a higher rating due to the numerous improvements spearheaded by Ocoee Fire Chief John Miller and the department’s strategic plan to obtain the rating. “We have been working on it for the last couple of years,” Miller said. “We made a five-year strategic plan and the first part of that

ity to deliver the products, Bollhoefer and his colleagues argue that there is no need for a physical medical marijuana dispensary in their city. “We don’t believe that there’s is any real justification to have medical marijuana dispensaries, Bollhoefer said. “For instance, if it is indeed determined, and it has been determined by voters that medical marijuana has a medical use, then it would make more sense to just sell them in regular pharmacies — where they sell other drugs. Why should marijuana if it does indeed has a medical use be treated differently?” Bruce Knox, the CEO of Knox Nursery, said he doesn’t expect the ban will negatively affect his company’s operations in the area.

plan was to attain ISO 1 rating. So we’ve been working hard to look at every aspect of the grading criteria and try to work on all those areas.” To pass the assessment, the department’s 50 firefighters and four stations successfully increased firefighter training, and improved documentation and response times, Miller said. Miller doesn’t expect going from a class rating of two to one would net a drastic decrease in insurance premiums, but it does ensure property owners in the Ocoee and Windermere area would be eligible for the best possible rates. Station 39, which services the town of Windermere, can reach the town within two minutes, said Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn. “Many residents don’t know … about who provides their emergency and fire service until they need them,” Bruhn said. “And sadly, Windermere realized how important it is to have a top-rated fire department within minutes of a call. We recently experienced losses of life in a horrific blaze, and this is a fire that could have spread to multiple homes. That did not happen thanks to the quick response and professionalism of the Ocoee Fire Department.”

Park Avenue. At about 9:40 a.m., an officer responded to a call about a car crash with injuries on Park Avenue and West Colonial Drive. Witnesses informed the officer the male driver of the at-fault vehicle fled the area on foot and provided his physical description. The officer located a man fitting the witnesses’ description hiding in the rear patio of a residential home. The man was secured in handcuffs and transported to the scene of the car crash, where he was positively identified by witnesses. During transport to the Orange County Jail, the man began yelling and striking his head against the safety divider while slamming his body around the prisoner compartment of the police car. The man suddenly slumped over in his seat and became unresponsive, causing the officer to request additional officers and a paramedic. However, once medical personnel evaluated the man, officers realized the man was only pretending to be unconscious.

ma was born and raised in the Nigerian city of Jos, and he can remember when it was a peaceful city. The pastor at Oasis Community Church is returning to his hometown — now a city full of violence, Boko Haram attacks and religious conflicts, he said — and he’s taking six members of his congregation on a 10-day mission trip in September. Traveling with Karshima are Blessing Freeman and her husband, Terry; Romita Harris; Tracy Lewis; Tonya Bell; and Juan Cotto. This is the church’s first mission trip, although several member have been abroad before on similar trips. Karshima served in Uganda, Blessing Freeman went to the Czech Republic, and Terry Freeman has been to Kenya. It will cost $17,500 to go on this trip, so the church has held multiple events, including two bake sales and a Taste of Nigeria, to help raise the necessary funds. The church currently is collecting used shoes through funds2orgs. The church will receive 40 cents on the dollar for every donated pair. These shoes are then sold in developing nations, where citizens sell them in the market to sustain their families. The mission team will accept any shoes, including flip-flops, boots, high heels and cleats. SERVING OTHERS

lence and crisis, a lot of kids, they don’t have parents, (and) they end up in these orphanages,” Karshima said. “They lost their parents or they lost their homes and (parents) cannot provide for the kids. Most of the youths now end up in prison because of the crisis and no jobs. They just steal or do some things that are illegal and end up in prison. Because of the crisis … most of the women don’t even have money to go to the hospital when they are pregnant or need medical treatment.” The Winter Garden group will be at the Safe Motherhood Partners hospital to help with cleaning, maintenance work and feeding patients. At the state prison, the mission team will do mentoring work alongside another organization that already works there. “We will be teaching the prisoners about God and to live their lives when they get out of prison, basic life skills, how to be good citizens,” Karshima said. The orphanage is where the Oasis team will do the most serving, taking part in construction work, Karshima said. He has another reason for visiting this orphanage, called Gidan Bege, or “House of Hope.” Karshima and his wife, Shiloh, plan to adopt two children from there, and he hopes to start the adoption process while he’s in Jos. “We want to do a partnership with the orphanage there … to provide support and pretty much a long-term relationship,” he said. At the hospital, the mission team will be tasked with learning what the needs are and how the church can help meet those needs, as well. “For us, it’s living our mission,” Karshima said. “Our mission statement is to grow faith, give hope, go love. So for us, this is life on mission. We’re excited for that.”

10 years ago, and now he’s deeply involved in the community. In addition to running West Orange Comics and Video Games, he also started the Clermont Comic Con three years ago and oversees a website dedicated to the geek culture in Florida. So what is it about comic books that has so many people hooked? It’s because normal people can’t have superpowers, Schlazer said, and the idea of having a superpower often sounds enticing. “When I was little, Superman could fly, so I’d jump off couches,” he said. “Towels were capes to me.” And thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe films and the DC Extended Universe films, the world of comic book superheroes is reaching a larger audience. “People who never knew about these things are now finding out about them,” said Joe Basick, coowner of West Orange Comics and Video Games. Right now, Schlazer said that the two most popular superhero comic books are ones about Deadpool and Harley Quinn.
“When I was little, Superman could fly, so I’d jump off couches. Towels were capes to me.” — Scott Schlazer
other side is several racks of video games for every kind of console both old and new. Basick manages the video game side of things, having previously owned and operated a video game shop in New York City. But when the economy crashed nearly a decade ago, Basick was forced to close his doors. So when Schlazer asked him to become part of the new store in Ocoee, Basick couldn’t say no. “This is a passion — it’s a labor of love,” he said. Plus, comic books and video games go hand-in-hand, he said. “Most video games are stories, and where do those stories come from? Comics,” Basick said. Some of the most popular games are Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Star Wars and, of course, Marvel and DC. So far, the store has attracted a group of regulars who often come into the store at least every other day. “It’s definitely a niche market,” Schlazer said about running a comic book and video game store. Although they’ve officially opened their doors, Basick said they’re hoping to have a grand opening in the coming weeks. “There aren’t other stores like us that have what we have,” Basick said.
A DAY WITH ALEX SAVIUK West Orange Comics and Video Games on Saturday, July 8, hosted a comic book-signing event featuring Marvel comic book artist Alex Saviuk. After graduating from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, Saviuk immediately started working as an artist with DC Comics and illustrated several comics, including “Green Lantern,” “The Flash” and “Superman.” He joined the team at Marvel Comics in 1986, and became well-known as an illustrator for SpiderMan comics. During his time with Marvel, he also worked on “Iron Man” and “Defenders of the Earth.” “He’s one of the best Spider-Man artists in the industry,” said Scott Schlazer, co-owner of West Orange Comics and Video Games. The event on Saturday also included a visit from Spider-Man and Silk, portrayed by Charlie Tymms and Nicci Sefton.

few years ago, Winter Garden resident Julie Yenisch got into the habit of running, mainly because she wanted to stay active and challenge herself. But recently, she completed her biggest challenge to date — running nine 5K races spanning all nine months of her pregnancy. Julie and her husband, Steve, learned they were pregnant with son Ryker in early November, a week before they were supposed to run Disney’s Wine and Dine Half Marathon. Julie had undergone fertility treatments, so up until that point, the two were still working with their reproductive endocrinologist, who didn’t want Julie running the race so early in the pregnancy. “In the very beginning, they wanted us to lay low and take it slow to make sure the pregnancy stuck, and we didn’t miscarry, and a lot of the time that seems to be the normal situation — in the beginning, take it slow,” Julie said. She still walked part of the race, but because none of their family members knew they were pregnant, she had to fake an injury to keep it a surprise and avoid suspicion.

Julie and Steve Yenisch show off Julie and “running buddy” Ryker’s nine medals.
“They know Julie’s the most accomplished runner out of the four of us,” Steve said with a laugh. “We needed an excuse to get her off the race without any suspicion.” But Julie didn’t want to stay out of the running loop for too long. She runs with the Winter Garden Runners group, with which she got involved three years ago. The group is a fun, social environ-
ment that encourages progress. Through it, she said, she got faster and built up her endurance. “I love running, it’s so much fun and I knew I wanted to have a healthy pregnancy, so once I got over the morning sickness, I started to try to get back into it,” she said. “My way of keeping myself motivated was to keep signing up SEE RUNNING PAGE 14

Brandon Correia Three days after successfully closing out Winter Garden Little League’s second game of the District 14 Juniors (13- and 14-year-old) All-Stars Tournament, Brandon Correia got the start against for WGLL in the district championship July 5 against Windermere. Overcoming a slow start in the first that saw him surrender two runs, Correia was lights out through the fifth inning before things got hairy in a wild sixth inning for both teams. Winter Garden ultimately finished as district runner-up after the 11-8 loss to Windermere, but Correia showed grit on the mound throughout the tournament.
innings, I held them tight. … I just had to try and find the umpire’s strike zone and have my command on pitches. What’s your general approach when you’re out there on the pitchers’ mound? I just mix it up and I locate my pitches pretty good, I’d say. The team went 2-1, overall, and just missed out on making it to Sectionals. Were you pleased with how the team performed? Oh yeah, I would never have a different group of guys — I was very happy with how we played. What was the most memorable part of the regular season, when you played for the Winter Garden Junior Yankees? The game we played at Windermere (Little League), and I pitched and shut out the Nationals.
Tell us a little bit about the upand-down nature of game against Windermere July 5. (Windermere) started out very strong, but through those five
Which position do you enjoy playing the most? I like playing shortstop, because that’s my favorite

for races. I love the race environment, it’s so much fun. I just kept signing up, and then I got to a point where I’d done four or five and then thought, ‘What if I got nine race medals in nine months?’” She was able to walk the Clermont Clay 5K later that November, but by the time the new year rolled around, doctors cleared her to run and get back into it. It’s perfectly safe, they told her, as long as she listened to her body and didn’t overexert or push herself. Their first doctor didn’t want Julie’s heart rate climbing above 140. Another doctor explained to them that because each person has different resting heart rates, it’s more about level of activity than a set number. “It’s more about your perceived exertion as opposed to a number, so it’s fine as long as you’re smart about it, listen to your body and stay hydrated,” she said. “It worked out really well because it (the pregnancy) wasn’t during the summer months — that let me stay active a little bit longer.” According to WebMD, maintaining a regular exercise routine throughout a pregnancy can help women stay healthy and feeling good. Studies show it can improve posture decrease backaches and fatigue, relieve stress and build stamina. Julie’s first official race while pregnant was the Clermont Clay 5K in November, which she did at seven weeks pregnant. Her final of the nine was the Clermont Tri 5K in June, at 35 weeks pregnant. “I missed December and May, so there were a couple months where I doubled up,” she said. “Especially when I felt better in second trimester, that’s when I was the most active.” And on July 2, Ryker Ethan Yenisch was born healthy as can be, weighing 7 pounds, 4 ounces. His parents can’t wait to tell him all about how he was “run-
player’s position, and I feel like I play my best there, besides pitching. If you could play one game in any Major League Baseball stadium, which would it be and why? Yankee Stadium. It’s the home of my favorite team, and I’ve just always wanted to go there. Which of your teammates can hit the ball the farthest? I’d say Akash Shah. He’s already hit the warning track and come very close (to a home run). What’s your favorite subject in school? Math. I excel in it, and it’s just probably the easiest for me. What do you think you’d like to do for a career one day? I would like to either play Major League Baseball or be in the United States Coast Guard. I’ve always liked boating all my life, and it’s just a fun thing to do, I think. What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not playing baseball or doing schoolwork? Playing outside with my friends, playing backyard football. What’s the last movie you saw in theaters that you enjoyed? “Finding Dory.” I saw that with my sister and brother. — STEVEN RYZEWSKI

5, was a 2-2 pitchers’ duel into the sixth inning — and then things went crazy. First, Windermere — the away team on the scoreboard — scored a whopping nine runs in the top half of the sixth inning. Not to go down without a fight, Winter Garden responded with six runs in the bottom half of the inning. In the end, though, Windermere’s All-Stars held on for the 11-8 victory and a trip to sectionals. Both the Dr. Phillips Majors and Windermere Juniors teams will compete in Section 5 Tournaments this weekend at Union Park Little League.

Another week, another pair of district runner-up finishes for teams from Winter Garden Little League. After advancing to — and being defeated in — the District 14 Championship Games for the Majors (12-year-old) and Juniors (13- and 14-yearold) divisions last week, Little Leaguers from Winter Garden have now finished as district runners-up in four of the five tournaments that have taken place. Winter Garden’s 12-year-olds won three of the five games they played in the District 14 Tournament — with both losses coming at the hands of Dr. Phillips. In the district championship game July 3, the youngsters from WGLL could not overcome a first inning that saw DPLL score five runs, ultimately leading to an 11-0 defeat. In games that were not against Dr. Phillips, Winter Garden’s 12-year-olds outscored their opponents by a margin of 33-16. WGLL’s Juniors All-Stars earned a very welcome victory against Dr. Phillips in pool play and added a win against South Lake before taking on Windermere in a memorable district championship game. The game, which started behind schedule at 9 p.m. July
