This year, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church will stage the classic, “Beauty and the Beast.” BRITTANY GAINES STAFF WRITER DR. PHILLIPS Every summer since 2012, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church has put on a theatrical production, but this summer’s show marks a new era for the church’s theater ministry. Not only will this show have the largest cast to date, but also it will be the first show in the church’s new theater — Founders Hall. “We used to be housed in the

gymnasium for the last five years, so we’re really excited,” Director Steve MacKinnon said. This year’s show will be the Broadway musical “Beauty and the Beast” and includes a cast of more than 90 actors. “One of the biggest challenges is the sheer size of the production and the cast,” MacKinnon said. “Trying to coordinate 90 people for rehearsals is challenging.” SEE CHURCH PAGE 4

ith 150 pairs of shoes in her closet — many of them high heels — Sarah Wrigley’s outfits were always on point. She loved her heels so much that she wore them everywhere — even to the grocery store. Now, all the 50-year-old Windermere resident does is cry when she sees the beautiful footwear she will never again slip on her feet. That’s the harsh reality when one loses a leg. In November 2015, Wrigley was on her way to work, stopping to drop off a key to a friend, when an uninsured driver struck her and pinned her between two cars. The trailer hitch went through her left leg, causing irreversible damage and nearly costing her her life. “I thought I was going to die; I knew it was a main artery,” Wrigley said. “I tied my leg off. I was very calm. I phoned my husband. I phoned my daughter. I was organizing work. By remaining calm, I saved my own life.” She said it was touch-andgo during the ambulance ride. Because her blood pressure was extremely low, medics couldn’t give her any pain medicine. And she was suffering. “I was trying to negotiate in the ambulance — if they gave me the meds, I would have a heart attack, but we’re close enough to the hospital that I would survive the heart attack,” she said. Doctors put her in an induced coma to save her life and for two weeks tried to save her leg. “Not at any stage did I think I was going to lose my leg,” she said. “I honestly thought I would have lots of pins and plates and I would lose six months of work. Amputation never crossed my mind.” LEARNING TO WALK AND LIVE

Wrigley admits she was naïve about the healing process. “I honestly thought I would get a leg and put it on and my life would go back to normal,” she said. “I thought six months, and I’d be back to normal.” But she wasn’t back to normal — and she won’t be, she realizes. One day last week, her thigh was swollen, and she was having

trouble putting on the prosthesis. It’s normally a process that takes her about six minutes: She cleans the leg with alcohol, rolls on the rubber sleeve and puts the suction ring around it, sprays everything with more alcohol and slides it into the socket. When all the air is out, she puts the valve in and is ready to take a few painful steps. Some days, she can walk with no problem; others, she can’t muster a single step. Her good leg gives her trouble too, sometimes. Doctors tried to remove two veins from the right leg to save the left, but the surgery was unsuccessful. Through a friend of a friend, Wrigley located a prosthetist in Sarasota who has made each of her casts. She is on her fifth version; frequent changes are necessary as her leg continues to heal and the swelling diminishes. Although she’s grateful to have the prosthesis, it is cumbersome and awkward and mobility is lim-

ited. Obstacles such as ramps and even small stones throw her off balance and cause her to stumble. “I’ve fallen quite a few times, but you have to just pick yourself up,” she said. “You have to give yourself confidence to walk again.” The leg can’t get wet, so Wrigley has to remove it and hop on her right leg into the shower. The family had to move out of its two-story home. When you are missing a leg, that means you have to drag yourself up and down the stairs, she said. The brace goes all the way up to her left hip, and it’s uncomfortable to sit on. No more sitting on barstools for Wrigley, either, because the prosthesis dangles above the floor and it’s heavy. And she said while she is learning to adapt to this new way of life, she has developed post-traumatic stress disorder. The once-social Manchester, England, native now spends quite a bit of her time at home. “I just found it easier to not go out,” Wrigley said. “You don’t want to talk some days.” When she’s behind closed doors, no one stares and no one asks questions. “Some days I don’t get out of bed. … You know, when you’re lying in bed, you can kid yourself that you still have your leg,” she

said. “I can feel it rubbing against the sheets. I get a lot of what they call phantom pain. I can get up in the middle of the night, and I forget I don’t have a leg, and then there I am on the floor. “The mind is such a powerful tool,” she said. “I just want someone to shut it off. ... It’s a battle with yourself.” She is trying desperately to like this new version of herself, she said, but she still refuses to stand in front of a mirror or shower with the lights on. She once worried about people gawking at her appendectomy scar if she wore a bikini in public. Amputation takes her fears to a whole new level, she said. Her friends and family are organizing fundraisers to help Wrigley purchase a top-of-the-line prosthetic leg that can get wet and can withstand an active lifestyle. Before the accident, she enjoying going to the beach and the pool, working out at the gym and walking her dogs three miles every morning before work. The new leg — which will have a gyroscope in it to make walking easier — costs $100,000, and insurance won’t cover this expense. “It’s just like the Rolls-Royce of knees,” she said.

KINDNESS AND SUPPORT

Wrigley lives in Belmere with her husband, Steven, and their two children, Cristina, 27, and William, 20. This ordeal has greatly affected everyone in her family, she said, but she couldn’t have gotten through this without them or the many friends in the community. “I’ve been very lucky, and I’ve got some amazing friends who have been here for my family,” she said. “The kindness I’ve been shown and the kindness people have shown, people who don’t even know me, it’s been an outof-body experience,” Wrigley said. “It’s hard to believe it’s me. It’s like I’m an outsider looking in. I’m always the one helping. All the acceptance is hard.” Wrigley said she is able to accept the support by vowing to pay it forward. She plans to become a registered peer visitor and spend time with people who have lost a limb. And the company that provides her prosthesis has asked her to participate in two speaking engagements in Kentucky and Nevada. Representatives are pleased with her progress and her eagerness to heal. “You just strive to be normal; your new normal,” she said. “I still grieve for the old me, so much.”

Spiritual guidance GABBY BAQUERO NEWS EDITOR WINDERMERE As a young teen, becoming a pastor was not exactly on Andy Jones’ to-do list, despite his mother’s predictions that he’d one day find his way into ministry. The thought of becoming a police officer, however, always held a certain allure for the young Jones. But in the end, Jones, now 57, proved that mothers are always right. In addition to his new role as the Windermere Police Department chaplain, Jones, who resides in Clermont, serves as a volunteer pastor at the southwest campus of Discovery Church in Winter Garden. He has been an ordained minister since 2005 and holds 27 years of pastoral experience and even more years of doing what he loves best: lending a listening ear and serving others.

FROM BARTENDER TO PASTOR

Growing up as a Southern Baptist, Jones always had a deep faith in God. But shortly after high school, Jones said he walked away from religion. But after recommitting his life to Christ, he and his wife, Carolann, started attending Discovery Church’s Winter Garden campus, where he quickly found his way into a leadership role. The first role he took on was as the head of security, all while he was still working as a bartender for a beer company. “I had many people tell me you

couldn’t be a Christian and work in the secular world — especially with bartending — but the stories that I can tell you about me sharing Christ in the places I went to would absolutely blow your mind,” Jones said. Jones, who sometimes would show up to church driving a beer truck, shrugged off the negative opinions, because bartending allowed him to fulfill one of his strongest desires: serving others. “My heart was made to serve people,” Jones said. “I love serving people. I’ve probably been that way since I was a kid. I love talking to people. … Even as a bartender, one of my favorite things was to talk to people about their issues. They’d find solace in letting me help them, and I’d find solace in listening to them.” Soon, Jones stopped serving drinks and started serving Christ. Now, he hopes to continue serving Christ by way of providing moral and spiritual support to Windermere’s law-enforcement community. CHECKING OFF THE BOXES

Jones has long held aspirations to become a police officer. In fact, it was that desire that led him to meet Windermere Police Chief Dave Ogden who, at the time, was working for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. “That’s one of the reasons I got involved, because I was talking to Dave Ogden back when I was in my 20s, and I actually wanted to apply for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, but my mom

WINDERMERE

Observer

talked me out of it,” Jones said. “Right about the time I realized it was definitely what I wanted to do, I got married and started a family. … And it became the furthest thing from what I would be able to do because of the income I needed to make.” Because Jones feared the salary of a police officer would be insufficient to support his growing family, he considered other occupations and worked in several other industries. Eventually, Jones finally applied to OCSO to become a reserve officer, hoping to fulfill his dream. But his dream got complicated when the OCSO informed him they would not be doing another police academy because of a lack of qualified applicants. The news meant Jones would need to wait another year. With that year of waiting and the year required for the academy, Jones was concerned he’d be about 60 years old by the time he finally graduated from the police academy. He voiced his worries to longtime friend Ogden, and that’s when Ogden asked him what he thought of becoming the chaplain for the Windermere Police Department. Following that conversation, Jones went home to talk about it with his wife. After much prayer, he concluded the opportunity was likely something God would want him to seize. “I was not seeking this position at all,” Jones said. “But it checked off so many boxes. I feel honored to be given this opportunity.”

The massive cast also has proven to be a challenge for choreographer Spencer Morrow, who said this show’s cast is the largest of his career. “You want to give everyone that stage time and tell the story,” Morrow said. “Everybody brings so much life to each character, it literally creates a village on stage.” But despite the challenges, Morrow said this production is one of the best that the ministry has ever done. “This is the most magical,” he said. “I think we give it a little something different. Part of it is the cast and part of it is what Steve and I cook together.” When planning for the summer production began back in January, MacKinnon said there was a specific reason they chose “Beauty and the Beast.” “We chose this show because of its message,” MacKinnon said. “It’s really in line with our core values of acceptance, service and hospitality.” Even some of the actors have realized deeper meaning to the classic “Beauty and the Beast” story. “You realize that there’s good in everyone,” said Shonn McCloud, who plays the role of the Beast. “But everyone has their own beast in their life that they deal with.” But one of the best parts of having such a large show is getting to know everyone in the cast. “That’s part of why we do it — for the community aspect to bring everyone together,” MacKinnon said. “We’ve got a cast that ranges from 8 to 80.”

“Beauty and the Beast” opens on Friday, Aug. 4, at St. Luke’s.

While most people are probably familiar with the Disney film “Beauty and the Beast,” the Broadway musical is a different rendition of the classic tale. “There are more songs than in the animated film, but musicals speak to everyone, because of how they tell the story,” MacKinnon said. “They sing because they’re so impassioned, and I think we all can relate to that sense of passion in our life.” For Lily MacKenzie, who is cast in the role of Belle, playing the role of a Disney princess has been a dream come true. After acting in several of the church’s other summertime productions, MacKenzie said it has

been interesting to watch the program grow and become an established part of the church. “It’s been fun to see the evolution from the first show to this one,” she said. “I feel it’s very established and everything has just come together.” So far, tickets have been selling faster than any production the church has put on before, with about 80% of tickets already sold. “People are definitely excited about it,” MacKinnon said. “I’m excited to see with with an audience and share it. It’s kind of a catharsis to see it open. It’s the best part for me. It’s almost a celebration.”

Florida Gov. Spessard Holland calls on Floridians to gather enough scrap iron to replace the cruiser the U.S. Navy announced was lost in the Solomon Islands battle. “I am informed that 3,215 tons of scrap iron and steel is necessary,” he said. “Surely, Floridians can raise that amount in short order.”

The first Mass was celebrated at the new Holy Family Catholic Church, and more than 500 friends and parishioners gathered as the organ peeled the glad tidings. Father Joseph Harte, pastor, said it was good to have a new church to call home.

THROWBACK THURSDAY THE WINTER GARDEN TIMES JULY 25, 1952 The front page of The Winter Garden Times gave parents tips on avoiding polio in 1952. Parents were warned by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis to keep their hands clean and not to mix with new groups; they were told to avoid getting chilled and not to get overtired. Warning signs included headache, fever, sore throat, upset stomach, tenderness and stiffness of the neck and back. Persons showing these symptoms were to be “put to bed at once, away from others.”

FROM THE ARCHIVES Rotarian Harry Marion Smith (1904-1978) smiles inside a greenhouse at the Winter Garden Ornamental Nursery, the business he owned, when he was honored as Nurseryman of the Year for 1966. The company, which supplied household foliage plants to retailers such as Woolworth’s, was the fourth largest nursery in Florida during its prime. Established in 1926, it grew as a natural offshoot from his father’s truck farm. Among his many accomplishments as a dedicated civic leader, Smith served as the 193233 president of the Rotary Club and as its district governor from 1943-44; was instrumental in the installation of lights at Winter Garden’s Walker Field in 1946; and contributed the amount needed for the inclusion of a chapel at the city’s First United Methodist Church. Smith was also a director of Florida Power Corporation and for years was chairman of the West Orange Hospital board of trustees.

dle Thursday, July 27, those in attendance got a first look at what the relief middle school — currently dubbed Site 37-MSW-4 — could look like. Harvard Jolly Architecture Senior Vice President Jack Williams ran through a brief presentation for the 25.56-acre site. The school would have a capacity of 1,213 students and measure about 172,000 square feet. The school faces Tattant Boulevard on the north, with Winter Garden-Vineland Road a couple of blocks east of the property. The Post Lakeside Apartments border it on the south, with wetlands to the southwest. “We are working with the county and getting their review and approval. … We’re providing a 25-foot buffer on the east and west property lines to make sure we have that separation between us and residential (areas),” Williams said. On school property, Tattant Boulevard is the main entrance, with the bus entrance on the northwest side and parent and staff entrance on the northeast. The bus canopy can accommodate up to 30 buses, while the car queue has room for up to 231 cars. Pedestrians will have their own entrances near the bus loop on the west side and near the car queue on the east. “We tried to design around the conflict between pedestrians and buses or vehicles,” Williams said. The design concept is built around a central courtyard area, with a two-story administration and media building to the north, three-story classroom building to the south, and a multipurpose building and gymnasium flanking the east and west sides, respectively. For the classroom building, each floor will host one grade level in a learning community. “Each floor will have an administration suite that will manage that grade level, as well as collaborative space,” Williams said. “Each of the grade levels has collaborative spaces with a variety of different seating. Our classrooms are set up for flexibility. … Technology also includes audio enhancement and wireless access throughout each of the classroom spaces.” In the administration building, office space and laboratories for practical experience,

agricultural and art will occupy the first floor. The second is home to technology labs, a television studio and the media center. Athletics facilities include a softball field, tennis and basketball courts, a 400-meter track with inner soccer field, and a gymnasium that can seat nearly 1,000 on the bleachers. The gym also doubles as a hurricane sheltering area. Additionally, current site plans include space for up to 12 portables, which raised concern from some parents in attendance who said the new school would need more than 12 portables. Bridgewater currently has 49. “I hope this school is like West Orange High was — the last that we pushed the limit, population-wise because of land circumstances and other things,” said School Board District 4 Member Pam Gould. “That’s the reality of it: We are in a very high-growth area, and it is not slowing down. Why would it? It’s a great place to live, work and play, and we only keep adding more amenities, so more people are going to want to be our neighbors.” Next for the relief school is reaching 100% design and heading into the permitting phase by November. The end of the year will be dedicated to project bidding and establishing a guaranteed maximum price, and construction should begin by January 2018. If all goes to plan, the new school would be open for the 2019-20 school year. “I’m as excited about having another school as you are,” Gould said. “This is really going to be an amazing project, and I’m loving some of the new features in it.”

UP FOR DISCUSSION Gould told community members that there will be another meeting Aug. 23 at West Orange High’s NinthGrade Center to discuss options for the timing of rezoning and options to help over the next couple of years as the relief school is being built. Check OCPS’s Facebook page for details on the exact time of the meeting closer to the date.

or years, Joe Bryant watched as leftover construction materials were hauled off to landfills. Pieces of industrial pipes. Chunks of rock. Glass. Every week, Dumpster after Dumpster was filled with material the crews couldn’t use. As an inspector for construction sites, Bryant has seen hundreds of Dumpsters filled and hauled away. But because these materials are built to withstand the elements, they aren’t exactly biodegradable. Instead, they just sit in the landfills, Bryant said. Then, nearly two years ago, he had an idea. He took home a section of piping destined for the garbage and, after some experimentation, managed to transform the pipe into usable furniture. Now, he’s all-in on collecting construction scraps for his new side-business called EcoSculpt Studios. It’s functional, industrial art, he said. “It’s amazing what we throw away, and they’re good materials that we’re throwing away,” Bryant said. A single pipe can be transformed into a pedestal, a side table, a stool or, in the case of larger pieces, a high-top table. A single project can often take nearly 30 hours to complete.

8 to 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at Starke Lake, 150 N. Lakeshore Dr., Ocoee. Enjoy a morning fishing lesson with local Ocoee police officers. When the Smithsonian Institution called, Roberta Blick was astounded. She never imagined they would be interested in an old lady’s quilt. But they were, requesting she gift it to the institution for its collection. “Can you imagine a heritage of mine lasting 500 years?” said Blick, who lives in Ocoee. “Isn’t that fabulous? I thought that was the most beautiful thing that ever happened.” But it’s not just any old quilt. It’s a rainbow quilt covered with

‘THE GOOD LORD GAVE ME THE ABILITY’

Blick has been creating quilts for as long as she can remember. As a child, she would sit near her grandmother watching her quilt. Those were the memories that inspired her to become a quilter as an adult, she said. “I loved being a part of it growing up,” she said. “I loved doing it.” Having been an oil-paint teacher for most of her life, Blick said quilting was just another creative art form she decided to try. “I enjoy anything that is cre-

And despite a terminal cancer diagnosis at age 90, Blick still gets behind her sewing machine to make quilts. She often makes what she calls nap quilts, which is a smaller, thinner quilt similar to a light blanket. After quilting for decades, she’s a pro and can finish a single quilt in a few days. “The good Lord gave me the ability,” she said.

sewing the squares together. Several of her friends from church also came over to help with the assembly of the quilt. By the end of the week, the top layer was complete, and Blick asked a fellow quilting friend who owned an industrial sewing machine to attach the backing and bottom layer to her quilt. By Saturday, the quilt was done. “I felt like it was my best ever,” Blick said. She brought the quilt to church on Sunday, and most of the congregation signed it. Then, one of her church friends, Nancy, asked to borrow the quilt so she could have more people sign it. Blick liked the idea, so over the course of several months, the quilt

moved from place to place getting signed by family and friends of the victims and several politicians, such as former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi. For now, the quilt will be loaned to the Orange County Regional History Center for its One Orlando Collection until the Smithsonian Institution requests the quilt be turned over to them. Although she is proud of her quilt, Blick said it was about paying tribute to the victims. “It really is dedicated to the young people from Pulse,” she said. “I wanted to express my love and care for all the those young people, and I feel a bit of me has done so.”

Blick was at Windermere Union Church Sunday morning when she heard about the shooting at Pulse Nightclub and immediately felt moved to do something to honor the victims. That’s when her son, Tim, gave her an idea. Do what you do best, he told her. Make a quilt. She started it that very day, making a stop at the fabric store after church where she found rainbow-colored fabric, which she thought was a perfect fit. But it wasn’t until later that afternoon while watching TV that she decided to embed photos of the victims onto her blanket. “Their eyes just talked to me,” she said about seeing their photos on the news. “They were all just looking at me with these beautiful eyes.” Over the next six days, Blick carefully transferred photos of each victim onto a square piece of white cotton fabric and began

tabletop. He places a small light underneath the glass to illuminate the tabletop. In the case of a pedestal, the illuminated glass is a good way to display a piece of artwork, Bryant said. When he’s at work, Bryant is always on the lookout for interesting pipes to throw into his truck to take home and regularly stops at a countertop warehouse to collect chunks of stone. A stash of pipes and rock has been accumulating in his back yard for the last year. He has several completed pieces in and around his home, and has discovered that his furniture is entirely weather-proof and storm-proof. “The nice thing about these is that you can put them outside, and they’re fine,” Bryant said. “They’re really forever tables. You’re going to be giving them to your kids; they’ll last that long.” The reception from customers has been positive he said, and he’s almost always working on a project. It’s the eco-friendly factor that people seem to like best. “Just about everybody likes the idea of recycling,” Bryant said. “So, I feel that I’m doing my part.”

For Bryant, creating each piece is an art form. “It’s a labor of love,” Bryant said. To start, Bryant chooses a pipe according to what the customer requested. Then comes the tedious process of sanding the bottom until the pipe stands on its end without wobbling. “It’s about getting them level and making them user-friendly so they aren’t going to tip over,” Bryant said. Once the bottom is level, Bryant fills the top hole of the pipe with a lightweight concrete that uses recycled Styrofoam peanuts, sand and pumice stone. “I didn’t want to just buy the concrete,” Bryant said of using recycled materials in his homemade concrete. “That kind of would defeat the purpose of what I’m doing.” The final stage is inlaying the top with stone, which are chunks of unused stone from countertops, and giving the transformed pipe a coat of paint. “The art of it is really puzzling the pieces together (for the top) and picking out the right paint,” Bryant said. And he always lets customers assist in the creative process. “My favorite thing to do is when someone wants some thing custom,” Bryant said. “They can do as much as they want or as little as they want.” Many of his pieces also include a glass panel in the center of the

A Florida Chalk Artists Association member, Judi chalked annually in the Spring Fever in the Garden (Winter Garden) and other local festivals. In 1996, Tome was first diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer and given a life expectancy of one to two years. She refused to be defined by a diag-

In 2014, Tome was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic bone cancer — her breast cancer had recurred in her bones. Most people never knew her diagnosis. She was a fighter and remained strong, upbeat and unstoppable. Her personal mission was to “live in light of eternity” — fully aware that eternity with Jesus was her destination and to leave this world better for the people who follow. A lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Pine Hills (now Church at the Cross), Judi was married there in 1973 to her love, Roger Dale Tome, who preceded her to eternity in 2014. He was born Feb. 12, 1973, in Hialeah Hospital and grew up in Hialeah and south Dade County until the family moved to Brevard County in 1985. He attended Merritt Island High School. He later moved to Sarasota, where he began working for Publix grocery stores as a baker. He met Kim Buckholtz in Sarasota, where they married. They moved to Cape Coral, where he continued to work for Publix. Mark was close to Kim’s son, Danny, and they also had two children, Brandon and Jessica. Mark and Kim were divorced, and Mark moved to Orlando, where his mother and stepfather had relocated. He also worked for Publix in Orlando. He worked as a land surveyor for DRMP for several years. He also lived for a time in Melbourne, where he worked as a cook. Mark became disabled with liver disease and lived the last few years of his life with his mother and stepfather in Ocoee. He was a lifelong, avid fan of the Miami Dolphins and the Miami Hurricanes football teams and loved to play the guitar. He was predeceased by his sister, Angela Schmidt, and his father, York Green. He is survived by his son, Brandon Green; daughter, Jessica Green; former stepson, Danny Buckholtz; half-brother, Richard Perez; stepbrother, Robert Perez; stepsister, Rosalyn Clark; his mother, Shirley Perez; his stepfather, Joe Perez; and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends who he loved and who loved him. He will be dearly missed.

HUDSON BENJAMIN LOWE DIED WEDNESDAY, JULY 26, 2017.

MERLYNN SHARP WRIGHT DIED WEDNESDAY, JULY 26, 2017.

Hudson Lowe: July 14, 1997 to July 26, 2017 Hudson graduated Ocoee High School in 2015 and had just completed his sophomore year as an undergraduate student at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. For his short time on this Earth, he had become more of a man and the person he dreamed of becoming than most people become in 80 years. Hudson was a student government officer in high school, as well as a part of the drum line, but his prize was his club, the Ocoee Green Initiative, of which he was president and founder. The initiative worked on small, but meaningful, projects that reduced Ocoee’s environmental footprint all over campus. Because of the initiative, Ocoee High School was recognized in 2015 under the Green School Recognition Program, an honorable and remarkable feat due solely to Hudson’s unwavering drive to get everything done in the moment. It didn’t end there, and never did with Hudson. Opportunity was rarely few and far between for him. He was a part of an organization called the Green Program and travelled to Iceland to work on a student sustainability project. When he got to college, he once again carved his way into saving the world. Aside from joining the Delta Tau Delta fraternity on campus, he joined Mission Green at Florida Atlantic and devoted his time to climate reality awareness and projects, educating elementary students in the area and working on energy efficiency on campus, to name a few accomplishments. In 2016, he traveled to Vietnam and Hong Kong for a global lead-

Merlynn Sharp Wright, 91, of Winter Garden, Florida, passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2017. She was born April 15, 1926, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Andrew Jackson and Stella Fowler Sharp. She was salutatorian of her graduating class at Oak Park High School. Merlynn married Samuel Leonard Wright in 1943, and they had two children. They moved from Michigan to Central Florida in 1955 and, eventually, to Winter Garden. She worked as an operator for the telephone company and ran Sam’s Union 76 gas station with her husband. She was Christian. She loved making quilts for loved ones and crocheting. Merlynn was preceded in death by her husbands, Samuel Wright and Howard Wright; and both her children, Duane and Karen. ership symposium, and later that year became a student intern for the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management. Although his success was self-forged and self-fulfilled, his notably curious and kind spirit was fostered by the love, creativity and devotion of his surviving family members: father, Randy Lowe; mother, Chris Lowe; two sisters, Dakota and Delaney Lowe. At the end of the day, through leadership, the environment or his friends and family, Hudson was always about other people, and other people became about Hudson. The loss of this young man has left a deep and lasting gap in the heart of this community, one that will, hopefully, grow into what Hudson dreamed so much to finish work on: saving the world. There has been a gofundme link set up (gofundme.com/ fall-forward-for-hudson-lowe) if anybody would like to donate toward Hudson’s passions: energy conservation, climate change prevention and education. A celebration of life will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at First Baptist Church in Windermere, Florida. The family requests donations to the gofundme link above in lieu of flowers. Scott Grove, a Winter Garden resident and head baseball coach at The First Academy, spent a week in Cary, North Carolina, the headquarters of USA Baseball. There, Grove served as an assistant with the USA Baseball 14U National Team Development Program. It is the second consecutive summer Grove has been involved with the program.

The First Tee of Central Florida gathered 21 golfers at the Golden Bear Club at Keene’s Pointe for a marathon day of golf May 22, raising $35,000 along the way for the non-profit program’s local initiatives. The golfers — a mix of First Tee supporters, staff and board members — played 36 holes that day for a good cause, after spending a few weeks soliciting pledges for the event. Thomas Lawrence, the executive director for The First Tee of Central Florida, said the event was a win.

“It was successful — we increased what we (raised) over the year before,” Lawrence said. “I think we’re in a good spot.” Funds from the marathon will be used to help with subsidizing participation fees for the program, which strives to adhere to a policy that no child be turned away for inability to pay. The money also helps train coaches and provide supplies, as well as fund the program’s outreach efforts. DAY ONE

Ahead of a season with some big expectations, two Olympia High football players announced their intended college destinations last week. First, wide receiver Jordan Underwood committed to FIU. Additionally, defensive back Josh Green announced his commitment to Tennessee State — where he will be reunited with his brother, James Green, who will be a freshman for the Tigers this fall. Earlier in the summer, Olympia linebacker Troy Golden committed to Colorado State and bluechip quarterback prospect Joe Milton committed to Michigan in the spring.

The opening of the campus for Windermere High means its football team truly has a home base for practice. Players and coaches for the Wolverines hit their on-campus practice field July 31 for the first official day of fall practice.

Although the Windermere Wolverines football team has been practicing together in preparation for the program’s debut season dating back to the spring, there was something different about when the players and coaches got together Monday afternoon for the team’s first official practice of the fall. Just ask head coach Greg Miller. “I didn’t sleep all night — it’s like back to when I played, just getting those first-day jitters,” Miller said. “I told the kids before we came out here that this is a SEE FOOTBALL PAGE 14

There will be some new faces around campus at Olympia High when school starts this month, thanks to a trio of hires to the Titans’ coaching staff. Since school let out for summer, Olympia Athletic Director Lauren Bradley has hired new head coaches for boys basketball, girls basketball and swimming. The hiring began in late May with the surprise announcement that Rob Gordon, formerly the head basketball coach at Evans High (and Ocoee High before that) would lead the Titans going forward. How long have you been playing softball? Three or four years. It’s a fun thing to do, and it’s something to do in your free time. What do you like about being the pitcher? I love how you’re the one who sometimes controls the game. And if our players aren’t doing so well, then we bring them back up. What’s the hardest part about being the pitcher? If the bases are loaded, you can’t walk that next batter or run scores. And placing the ball is difficult.

special moment and that we needed to come out here and represent the school well.” If Miller was tired, he didn’t look it as the Wolverines worked through drills on the day the FHSAA recognized as the beginning of the fall season. After a spring season during which the program had to practice on an open field adjacent to Lifebridge Church in Horizon West, it was nice for the program to get some work in on its own, on-campus practice field. “It’s good to have a home,” Miller said. That home includes not only the team’s practice field, which lines the southwest corner of the school’s spanking-new campus along Winter GardenVineland Road, but also a brand

its first trip to the Final Four in Lakeland under Robert Carmody. Carmody, who is still part of the academic faculty at Olympia, stepped down for personal reasons. “(Carmody) did a great job, so finding a replacement for him was really difficult,” Bradley said. Despite that, Bradley said she feels she found the ideal candidate in Thomas Passafaro. Passafaro was previously the head coach at Cornerstone Charter the last two seasons. He led that program to 27 wins and an appearance in the playoffs. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at the collegiate level and also brings other experience at the high school and AAU levels. “When I was interviewing him, he had great knowledge of the game,” Bradley said. “He’s had experience at all levels, and he’s a good, personable guy.” Olympia girls basketball finished last season in the state semifinals and with a final record of 15-7. er after Bradley and the school’s athletics department decided to go in a different direction with the boys hoops program. Gordon’s hiring is a homecoming of sorts. Gordon coached the Trojans for the past two seasons, before which he led Ocoee High’s program to its best season in program history in 2014-15. Before that, though, he was an assistant under former Olympia coach Mark Griseck (now head coach at Windermere High). “(Gordon) worked under Mark and he learned a lot, and then he went on to Ocoee and Evans and really helped change those programs around,” Bradley said. “He knows our kids and he knows our area.” The Titans went 11-16 in 2016-17. Equally as surprising as the news of Gordon’s hiring was the news that Olympia would have a new girls basketball coach, as well. Last season, the Titans girls hoops program enjoyed

least surprising, as Stephanie Johnson-Possell, the Titans’ longtime water polo coach who additionally took on the swim team last school year, returned her focus to just water polo. Bradley said although having Johnson-Possell coach both teams worked out well last year — the girls water polo won a state title, after all — it was never a long-term solution. Instead, the school announced Kathy Zimmerman as its new head coach for its swimming and diving teams. Zimmerman is a teacher at Windy Ridge School who swam competitively at Winter Park High and the University of Miami. She has coached several sports in Orange County in the past two decades. “(Zimmerman has) got a great knowledge of the sport and we thought she’d be the best fit,” Bradley said. Daniels said. “The energy was great. We’re all excited to get out here and be part of the new school and the new team.” As for the practice itself, Miller said the storms did disrupt what the team had intended to accomplish on Day One, but the staff and the players were able to make the best of it. “We had to make some adjustments to the practice schedule, and we didn’t get as much time out here on the field as we wanted to,” Miller said. “But, I think that for an hour-and-a-half, we got out here and practiced and we were able as coaches to start to instill what it is that we want for practices during the season.” That will be important, because the senior-less, firstyear program has just 15 days until it takes the field against a live opponent in its Kickoff Classic (7 p.m. Aug. 18 at West Orange). Then, seven days later, the regular season begins on the road at Cypress Creek.

HOW TO HELP

STAFF WRITER

W

hen Winter Garden resident Marty Perlmutter lost his best friend, Roy Gross, to multiple myeloma in 2012, he wasn’t about to let it be in vain. So, he got on his bicycle a few months later and embarked on a 17-day journey from Jacksonville to Maine. Those 1,348 miles ridden ended up raising $8,000 for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. When Roy died from the incurable blood cancer, cycling to raise money toward research for a cure was a no-brainer. Roy was “the Putz to my Moron, from the Grumpy Old Men movies,” as Perlmutter likes to say, and the two had originally planned to do a crosscountry Portland to Portland ride once they retired.

CYCLING FOR A CAUSE

Fifteen years ago Perlmutter took up a friend’s offer to come cycling with him one weekend. He got out an old, steel Huffy bike that weighed about 100 pounds and hit the trails. “I got into riding with him and started doing 30, 40, 50 miles,” Perlmutter said. “I did a crossFlorida ride and got a new bike.” That’s when the planning for a cross-country ride began. But in June 2011, Roy called Perlmutter, asking him if he was sitting down. That’s when his best friend said he had multiple myeloma. Research, even just five years ago, wasn’t where it is today. Roy’s progression was quick, and he died in February 2012. “Along that time and right before he passed, I said, ‘You know something? I’m gonna do a longdistance bike-ride fundraiser in your honor when you die,’” Perlmutter said. It was half in jest, half completely serious. Perlmutter chose the MMRF because it is the leader in multiple myeloma research, having developed and introduced four new cancer treatments within the span of a year. In his opinion, the foundation is doing more in this field than anywhere else in the world. He ended up connecting with Alicia O’Neill, director of business development and partnerships for MMRF. She assisted him in setting up contacts every day of his 17-day ride in 2012. She also has been instrumental in coordinating and

Marty Perlmutter must raise $15,000 for multiple myeloma research before he embarks on his 3,400-mile cross-country ride Sept. 3. To learn more about his cause and to donate, visit endurance.themmrf.org/ RoadToVictories/MartyPerlmutter.

bringing to fruition Perlmutter’s next endeavor — a 3,400-mile ride over the span of 50 days, from Los Angeles to Connecticut. Starting Sept. 3, Perlmutter will join seven others on the 50-day journey. Other riders will begin with them in Los Angeles and ride to Flagstaff. Each rider is required to raise at least $15,000 for MMRF, and the overall team goal is $400,000. Currently, they are halfway to their goal. Some of the riders he is joining are multiple myeloma patients themselves. Seven days of the trip will require the team to ride 95 miles or more. And of the 50 days, 45 will be spent just riding. “For me it’s a question of, ‘Can a 66-year-old guy ride 3,400 miles in 50 days?” Perlmutter said. “I don’t know if I can do it; but my mind says I will do it.”

making are what moves him to push himself and help further research in their honor. “What the foundation has done in the last five to seven years is make tremendous strides in being able to manage your disease,” he said. “I don’t want my friend Roy to die because he got the disease before they had something that could really help him.” “He’s a very focused individual, determined to do whatever he sets his mind to,” said Marty’s wife, Barbara Perlmutter. “We’ve been married for over 45 years and work next to each other. I’m going to miss him and be a little nervous (for him) on certain areas. I’m excited that he’s going to do it, and I know he’s going to be OK, that’s the main thing. They’ll take good care of him.” Ultimately, Perlmutter said, he’s happy to do something that will make a difference. “I can’t cure cancer, but I’m still healthy enough where I can go out, ride and get something done,” he said. “Friends keep telling me what a nice thing I’m doing and keeping the memory of Roy alive five years later. When someone’s important in your life, you don’t forget them. …You never lose track of what they meant to you.”

he title “The Queen of Windermere” isn’t given to just anyone, for any reason. Longtime Realtor Suzi Karr is often referred to by this title. Maybe it’s because she’s been a Windermere resident for more than 40 years and is well-versed in its history. Maybe it’s because she owned and operated Suzi Karr Realty for 35 years. Coupled with her service-first approach to real estate, all of the above might be indicators of the nickname. After having owned and operated Suzi Karr Realty for so long, though, she recently decided it was time for a change. So she sold the office and in June of this year moved on to become a realestate professional with Premier Sotheby’s International Realty in Dr. Phillips. “I stayed with the office and was active, but many of my clients are repeat clients and referrals, and

I’m blessed to get referrals from other Realtors,” she said. “It was time for me to move on. I thought it out, because it was going to be a big move after 40 years (in the profession), and I felt like Sotheby’s had the best marketing and international presence, which I think is so very important.” IN THE BEGINNING

Karr began her career in real estate 40 years ago, and for the first four, she worked for real-estate broker Lee Bekemeyer, still a friend of hers to this day. “I started out (my career) knowing I had to do whatever I had to do to make money,” she said. “I lived in Windermere and worked in Winter Garden. I wanted to really (just) work Windermere.” After her fourth year, she decided she wanted to open her own business and service the people in the town she loves so much. “I love giving that firsthand service because you almost become family with the clients,” SEE KARR PAGE 20

Making her move Windermere Realtor Suzi Karr, also known as “The Queen of Windermere,” recently transitioned from her own firm to Premier Sotheby’s International Realty.

she said. “I did the one-week crash course, and the minute I found out I passed, I opened my office in old Windermere, where I live. We were just ready for some changes. I had two associates at the time, and we had a good market, too. It was just dynamite, and it went from there.” At the time, flyers were a newer concept, so she began utilizing them in her business. She learned how to use a computer in 1990, and eventually, her two sons came aboard and worked with her. And all this time, she has lived in the same house in old Windermere for 35 years. In addition to Florida, Karr also has held real-estate licenses in Hawaii and California. She currently holds a Gold Key certification, as well as her Home Staging certification. “I just obtained my certification as a certified home stager, and I love that, because I can help people use what they have to make their homes more appealing for a potential buyer,” she said. “I just love my profession. What you’re holding in your hands is the product of more than a year of planning. It’s the product of our wildest dreams — a bold step for a company that last month celebrated our 110th anniversary. Welcome, readers, to the first edition of the Windermere Observer, a sister paper of the West Orange Times & Observer, which has roots that date back to the Winter Garden Ricochet in 1905. For more than a century, our newspaper — through all its previous owners and iterations — covered the entire West Orange region with just one edition. Today, that changes. Put simply: West Orange has grown too large for one hyperlocal community newspaper. For longtime readers: this new Windermere Observer will cover Windermere, Horizon West, Dr. Phillips, Bay Hill, Gotha and MetroWest, while the West Orange Times & Observer will renew its focus on Winter Garden, Ocoee and Oakland. As the 10th newspaper owned by the Sarasota-based Observer Media Group, the Windermere Observer will strive to deliver on OMG’s slogan: “You. Your Neighbors. Your Neighborhood.”
