Residents eager to enjoy the town of Oakland’s long-awaited art and history center will have to wait a little longer after the bidding process failed to produce a suitable builder. The town advertised in May for construction firms, and four companies were approved to submit bids to build the 3,000-squarefoot facility at the northwest intersection of Tubb Street and the West Orange Trail. Two firms backed out because of stringent time requirements for the bid submission and because they didn’t have time to work with a bonding company, said Public Works Director Mike Parker. The bids submitted from the other two companies were slightly less than and a little more than $1.2 million — much higher than the architect’s estimated $800,000. Parker presented multiple options to elected officials July 25. These included abandoning the project, re-advertising the project, redesigning the project, giving the two non-bonded bidders adequate time to become bonded or trying to negotiate a new price with the two qualified but overpriced bidders. The Town Commission voted to contact the two who qualified to see if a new agreeable price could be reached.

Finding her new balance CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
In November 2015, Wrigley was on her way to work, stopping to drop off a key to a friend, when an uninsured driver struck her and pinned her between two cars. The trailer hitch went through her left leg, causing irreversible damage and nearly costing her her life. “I thought I was going to die; I knew it was a main artery,” Wrigley said. “I tied my leg off. I was very calm. I phoned my husband. I phoned my daughter. I was organizing work. By remaining calm, I saved my own life.” She said it was touch-andgo during the ambulance ride. Because her blood pressure was extremely low, medics couldn’t give her any pain medicine. And she was suffering. “I was trying to negotiate in the ambulance — if they gave me the meds, I would have a heart attack, but we’re close enough to the hospital that I would survive the heart attack,” she said. Doctors put her in an induced coma to save her life and for two weeks tried to save her leg. “Not at any stage did I think I was going to lose my leg,” she said. “I honestly thought I would have lots of pins and plates and I would lose six months of work. Amputation never crossed my mind.” LEARNING TO WALK AND LIVE
Wrigley admits she was naïve about the healing process. “I honestly thought I would get a leg and put it on and my life would go back to normal,” she said. “I thought six months, and I’d be back to normal.” But she wasn’t back to normal — and she won’t be, she realizes. One day last week, her thigh was swollen, and she was having trouble putting on the prosthesis. It’s normally a process that takes her about six minutes: She cleans the leg with alcohol, rolls on the rubber sleeve and puts the suction ring around it, sprays everything with more alcohol and slides it into the socket. When all the air is out, she puts the valve in and is ready to take a few painful steps. Some days, she can walk with no problem; others, she can’t muster a single step. Her good leg gives her trouble too, sometimes. Doctors tried to remove two veins from the right leg to save the left, but the surgery was unsuccessful. Through a friend of a friend, Wrigley located a prosthetist in Sarasota who has made each of her

casts. She is on her fifth version; frequent changes are necessary as her leg continues to heal and the swelling diminishes. Although she’s grateful to have the prosthesis, it is cumbersome and awkward and mobility is limited. Obstacles such as ramps and even small stones throw her off balance and cause her to stumble. “I’ve fallen quite a few times, but you have to just pick yourself up,” she said. “You have to give yourself confidence to walk again.” The leg can’t get wet, so Wrigley has to remove it and hop on her right leg into the shower. The family had to move out of its two-story home. When you are missing a leg, that means you have to drag yourself up and down the stairs, she said. The brace goes all the way up to her left hip, and it’s uncomfortable to sit on. No more sitting on barstools for Wrigley, either, because the prosthesis dangles above the floor and it’s heavy. And she said while she is learning to adapt to this new way of life, she has developed post-traumatic stress disorder. The once-social Manchester, England, native now spends quite a bit of her time at home. “I just found it easier to not go out,” Wrigley said. “You don’t want to talk some days.” When she’s behind closed

The bus canopy can accommodate up to 30 buses, while the car queue has room for up to 231 cars. Pedestrians will have their own entrances near the bus loop on the west side and near the car queue on the east. “We tried to design around the conflict between pedestrians and buses or vehicles,” Williams said. The design concept is built around a central courtyard area, with a two-story administration and media building to the north, three-story classroom building

Relief school progresses Thursday, July 27, those in attendance got a first look at what the relief middle school — currently dubbed Site 37-M-SW-4 — could look like. Harvard Jolly Architecture Senior Vice President Jack Williams ran through a brief presentation for the 25.56-acre site. The school would have a capacity of 1,213 students and measure about 172,000 square feet. The school faces Tattant Boulevard on the north, with Winter Garden-Vineland Road a couple of blocks east of the property. The Post Lakeside Apartments border it on the south, with wetlands to the southwest. “We are working with the county and getting their review and approval. … We’re providing a 25-foot buffer on the east and
“The mind is such a powerful tool,” she said. “I just want someone to shut it off. ... It’s a battle with yourself.” She is trying desperately to like this new version of herself, she said, but she still refuses to stand in front of a mirror or shower with the lights on. She once worried about people gawking at her appendectomy scar if she wore a bikini in public. Amputation takes her fears to a whole new level, she said. Her friends and family are organizing fundraisers to help Wrigley purchase a top-of-the-line prosthetic leg that can get wet and can withstand an active lifestyle. Before the accident, she enjoying going to the beach and the pool, working out at the gym and walking her dogs three miles every morning before work. The new leg — which will have a gyroscope in it to make walking easier — costs $100,000, and insurance won’t cover this expense. “It’s just like the Rolls-Royce of knees,” she said.

Wrigley lives in Belmere with her husband, Steven, and their two children, Cristina, 27, and William, 20. This ordeal has greatly affected everyone in her family, she said, but she couldn’t have gotten through this without them or the many friends in the community. “I’ve been very lucky, and I’ve got some amazing friends who have been here for my family,” she said. “The kindness I’ve been shown and the kindness people have shown, people who don’t even know me, it’s been an outof-body experience,” Wrigley said. “It’s hard to believe it’s me. It’s like I’m an outsider looking in. I’m always the one helping. All the acceptance is hard.” Wrigley said she is able to accept the support by vowing to pay it forward. She plans to become a registered peer visitor and spend time with people who have lost a limb. And the company that provides her prosthesis has asked her to participate in two speaking engagements in Kentucky and Nevada. Representatives are pleased with her progress and her eagerness to heal. “You just strive to be normal; your new normal,” she said. “I still grieve for the old me, so much.”

to the south, and a multipurpose building and gymnasium flanking the east and west sides, respectively. For the classroom building, each floor will host one grade level in a learning community. In the administration building, office space and laboratories for practical experience, agricultural and art will occupy the first floor. The second is home to technology labs, a television studio and the media center. Athletic facilities include a softball field, tennis and basketball courts, a 400-meter track with soccer field, and a gymnasium that can seat nearly 1,000 on the bleachers. The gym also doubles as a hurricane sheltering area. Additionally, current site plans include space for up to 12 por-
tables, which raised concern from some parents in attendance who said the new school would need more than 12 portables. Bridgewater currently has 49. “I hope this school is like West Orange High was — the last that we pushed the limit, population-wise because of land circumstances and other things,” said School Board District 4 Member Pam Gould. “That’s the reality of it: We are in a very high-growth area, and it is not slowing down.” Next for the relief school is reaching 100% design and heading into the permitting phase by November. Construction should begin by January 2018. If all goes to plan, the new school would be open for the 2019-20 school year.

Forest Lake Estates communities. Despite residing in Ocoee’s geographical boundaries, the residents in attendance had ZIP codes pertaining to Apopka, Gotha, Orlando and Pine Hills. And although the city has made efforts to change their ZIP codes, so far, it has not been successful. “This issue has not fallen on deaf ears,” said District 2 Commissioner Rosemary Wilsen. “We have worked for the past eight to nine years on this … and we know your zip code has a lot to do with your identity. … We do understand, and we’re very concerned.” However, for some residents, the issue goes beyond having a sense of identity and city pride. Those who attended the meeting said their assigned ZIP code also results in higher homeowner and car insurance premiums, which are determined based on ZIP codes. “It’s that ZIP — it’s crazy,” said 36-year Ocoee resident Susan Bailey, who lives in the Rose Hill community. “It’s driving everyone in our neighborhood crazy. Rose Hill is in Ocoee, yet we’re still 32818. Therefore, we’re in a highcrime zone. Ocoee’s not a highcrime zone, but our ZIP code is. But we’re in a great neighborhood, we’re just right next to Pine Hills.”

MAKE YOUR DREAMS OF HOMEOWNERSHIP INTO REALITY! GET ON PATH TO BUY THE HOME YOU’VE ALWAYS DREAMED ABOUT FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. Homeownership is a dream that FCB can help you make happen, and it’s easier than you think! FCB’s Affordable Home Loan Program can help you overcome:
State Sen. Randolph Bracy, who has been lobbying on behalf of the city on the ZIP code issue, gave a chronological timeline of everything the city has done in the past 10 years to tackle the issue, as well as the plan moving forward. To date, Bracy explained, the city has reached out to the local and state postal offices, as well as the state and federal government. The city’s numerous efforts to convince the local and state postal service offices to change the ZIP codes were unsuccessful. “It’s really not the postal carrier,” said Ocoee Mayor Rusty Johnson. “I was personally a postal carrier for about 28 years. It’s the guy sitting in the postal manager position — he’s the one making the money. He gets paid off of how many routes he’s got. So he doesn’t want to give it up because
he’s getting paid for it. The bigger his post office is, the more money he’s making.” After negotiations broke down with the postal offices, the city instead sought help from the state but also was met with opposition. “We were met with the same obstacles,” Bracy said. “The state entity basically supported the state postal agency. From there, the city went to the postmaster general in D.C. Letters were sent, we solicited help from senators to no avail.” Once the state denied the request, the city decided to go through the federal Legislature. The request to have the ZIP code changed was included in a postal reform bill titled HR6303 in 2016. Although it passed the House, it died in the Senate. WHAT NOW?
However, the city is trying again, Bracy added. The new federal bill that replaced HR6303 is titled HR756, and it also has an accompaniment bill in the Senate. “Because of politics (HR6303) did not pass,” Bracy said. “It did not pass the finish line. So here we are again, and we’re kind of in the same position … but I’m hopeful we can get it across the finish line this year. So right now, it is waiting to be heard.” One resident questioned whether the city had anticipated it would run into this many problems in its quest to change the ZIP codes. District 4 Commissioner Joel Keller said the city did not expect it because 10 years ago, changing ZIP codes was an easier process and they had seen other municipalities succeed. Some residents said they regret annexing into the city, given how long the process has taken. Audie Bailey, who lives in Rose Hill, said if he had known this would happen, he would have never agreed to annex into the city. “It’s not about persecution of the post office,” he said. “To me this is just common sense. But again, if you’d had told me we wouldn’t be getting an Ocoee ZIP code when we voted for an annexation, I would’ve said no. Everyone in that room would’ve said no.”

Ocoee city leaders established the design and development standards that will guide future growth in the newly created State Road 429 Overlay District. GABBY BAQUERO NEWS EDITOR
Ocoee leaders have collaborated with the city of Winter Garden in the creation of a special zoning district. The special zoning district, named the State Road 429 Overlay District, is Ocoee’s fourth special overlay district and it includes three character areas, each with its own respective standards and goals. The intent behind the creation of the 429 district is to guide future development in a manner that links both cities’ downtowns, establish a more pedestrianfriendly transportation network and increase economic activity in both cities. The master plan for the overlay district, approved during the July 18 commission meeting, outlines the design and development standards the city seeks to implement for future projects proposed within the zoning district. The unanimous vote is a big step for the rapidly growing city, which gained more than 20,000 residents since 2000, according to the U.S Census Bureau, and now constitutes the third largest city in Orange County.
PLANT STREET CHARACTER AREA
The main idea behind the Plant Street character area, which was created in coordination with Winter Garden, is to link both cities’ downtowns together via Plant Street, create attractive entrances to each and improve street connectivity. Future development along the corridor will be a mix of retail, office and corporate uses, which will be further subdivided into two districts: The Gateway District and East Plant District. The Plant Street district will hold the “front doors” to both Ocoee and Winter Garden and will be built in a manner that focuses on a pedestrian-oriented urban streetscape, with inviting building facades fronting the street and parking lots located in the back. The Gateway District will be reserved for offices, entertainment and destination retail. BUSINESS CENTER CHARACTER AREA
This area encompasses land between State Road 429 and Ocoee-Apopka road north of the Plant and Franklin streets intersection. The city hopes to use this area for manufacturing, retail and multi-family housing. According to the vision plan, city leaders aim to target certain manufacturing uses for this area, including phar-
maceuticals and biotech, medical equipment, aircraft parts, food products, and digital media and design. INTERCHANGE VILLAGE CHARACTER AREA
With its easy accessibility and location at the West Road interchange, the Interchange Village Character Area is considered a prime area for a mixed-use center with office, residential and retail developments. According to city documents, future development will be confined to vacant parcels, and such parcels are targeted for corporate and/or school uses. This area will have a commercial center surrounded by mixed-use developments, including office and residential uses that will all be interconnected by pedestrianscale blocks and a West Orange Trail connection. According to the ordinance, any of the lands located within a Character Area that are currently in use but do not conform to the development and design standards respective to its zoning district are allowed to continue as a nonconforming use. Likewise, a proposed development inconsistent with the character area guidelines established in a zoning district may be permitted if the city determines it’s compatible with surrounding development and the city’s longterm vision.

he Ocoee Police Department kicked off fundraising for its Christmas toy drive Friday, July 21, with a Texas Hold ’em fundraising tournament. Every Christmas, the department provides toys to local children in need. Because of an increase in demand, the department decided to start fundraising earlier this year with some Christmas in July fundraisers. Nearly 30 people participated in Friday’s tournament, which raised several thousand dollars for the cause.

or years, Joe Bryant watched as leftover construction materials were hauled off to landfills. Pieces of industrial pipes. Chunks of rock. Glass. Every week, Dumpster after Dumpster was filled with material the crews couldn’t use. As an inspector for construction sites, Bryant has seen hundreds of Dumpsters filled and hauled away. But because these materials are built to withstand the elements, they aren’t exactly biodegradable. Instead, they just sit in the landfills, Bryant said. Then, nearly two years ago, he had an idea. He took home a section of piping destined for the garbage and, after some experimentation, managed to transform the pipe into usable furniture. Now, he’s all-in on collecting construction scraps for his new side-business called EcoSculpt Studios. It’s functional, industrial art, he said. “It’s amazing what we throw away, and they’re good materials that we’re throwing away,” Bryant said. A single pipe can be transformed into a pedestal, a side table, a stool or, in the case of larger pieces, a high-top table. A single project can often take nearly 30 hours to complete.

MERLYNN SHARP WRIGHT DIED WEDNESDAY, JULY 26, 2017. Merlynn Sharp Wright, 91, of Winter Garden, Florida, passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2017. She was born April 15, 1926, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Andrew Jackson and Stella Fowler Sharp. She was salutatorian of her graduating class at Oak Park High School. Merlynn married Samuel Leonard Wright in 1943, and they had two children. They moved from Michigan to Central Florida in 1955 and, eventually, to Winter Garden. She worked as an operator for the telephone company and ran Sam’s Union 76 gas station with her husband. She was Christian. She loved
making quilts for loved ones and crocheting. Merlynn was preceded in death by her husbands, Samuel Wright and Howard Wright; and both her children, Duane and Karen. Survivors: grandchildren, Valerie Wilson, Winter Garden, Nicole
He was a part of an organization called the Green Program and travelled to Iceland to work on a student sustainability project. When he got to college, he once again carved his way into saving the world. Aside from joining the Delta Tau Delta fraternity on campus, he joined Mission Green at Florida Atlantic and devoted his time to climate reality awareness and projects, educating elementary students in the area and working on energy efficiency on campus, to name a few accomplishments. In 2016, he traveled to Vietnam and Hong Kong for a global leadership symposium, and later that year became a student intern for the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management.
Although his success was selfforged and self-fulfilled, his notably curious and kind spirit was fostered by the love, creativity and devotion of his surviving family members: father, Randy Lowe; mother, Chris Lowe; two sisters, Dakota and Delaney Lowe. At the end of the day, through leadership, the environment or his friends and family, Hudson was always about other people, and other people became about Hudson. The loss of this young man has left a deep and lasting gap in the heart of this community, one that will, hopefully, grow into what Hudson dreamed so much to finish work on: saving the world. There has been a gofundme link set up (gofundme.com/fall-forwardfor-hudson-lowe) if anybody would like to donate toward Hudson’s passions: energy conservation, climate change prevention and education. HUDSON BENJAMIN LOWE DIED WEDNESDAY, JULY 26, 2017. Hudson Lowe: July 14, 1997 to July 26, 2017 Hudson graduated Ocoee High School in 2015 and had just completed his sophomore year as an undergraduate student at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. For his short time on this Earth, he had become more of a man and the person he dreamed of becoming than most people become in 80 years. Hudson was a student government officer in high school, as well as a part of the drum line, but his prize was his club, the Ocoee Green Initiative, of which he was president and founder. The initiative worked on small, but meaningful, projects that reduced Ocoee’s environmental footprint all over campus. Because of the initiative, Ocoee High School was recognized in 2015 under the Green School Recognition Program, an honorable and remarkable feat due solely to Hudson’s unwavering drive to get everything done in the moment. It didn’t end there, and never did with Hudson. Opportunity was rarely few and far between for him.

JUDITH UNDERWOOD TOME DIED SATURDAY, JULY 29, 2017. Local artist dies, leaves legacy for students. Judith Underwood Tome, 65, of Windermere, died peacefully Saturday, July 29, after her battle with bone cancer. A founding member of The Master’s Academy in Oviedo, Florida, Judi Tome established its awardwinning fine arts program. An avid patron of the arts, Judi was committed to helping students discover their unique God-given talents. In August 2016, the Judi Tome Black Box Theatre was dedicated in her honor. An art teacher for 25 years, Mrs. Tome taught kindergarten through 12th grade. Once she retired from the classroom, she was asked by Congressman Dan Webster to judge the Congressional Art Awards each year, which honors outstanding student artwork to be hung in the nation’s capitol. An invitation-only artist to the Walt Disney World annual Festival of the Masters, Judi loved to share Madonnari Italian street-painting chalk art with visitors to Downtown
Disney. A Florida Chalk Artists Association member, Judi chalked annually in the Spring Fever in the Garden (Winter Garden) and other local festivals. In 1996, Tome was first diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer and given a life expectancy of one to two years. She refused to be defined by a diag-

Brad Lord still remembers when the Thomas brothers — Riley and Gary — arrived on the campus of Foundation Academy. “They just brought a toughness that our team didn’t have before and a can-do attitude,” Lord said. Lord, the head football coach at Foundation Academy, remembers the 2011 season, when Riley Thomas was captain and starting linebacker of the team during its first season in district competition after previously playing in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference. Where many thought the Lions would flounder after leaving the SSAC, they went 5-4 that first season, and Lord credits Riley Thomas on several levels — whether it was 24 tackles in one game against Mount Dora Bible, his single-season, program record of 141 tackles or his leadership. It was with great sadness, then, that Lord learned that Thomas had died July 21 in a motorcycle accident. He was 23. In an email to the program’s players, families and supporters, Lord remembered Riley — who became an electrical lineman after graduation and remained in the West Orange area — as “an outstanding human being and an outstanding football player.” It is not the first time the coach has had to come to terms with the passing of a player — he was an assistant at Olympia when the shooting death of Dereck Parker, 15, rocked the community and also coached J.J. Warmus at Foundation, a former player who died in 2015. It’s not something that gets easier, and Lord said that although he cannot imagine what the Thomas family is going through, it is a wrenching thing as a coach to know a young man he watched grow up on the football field is no longer with us. “As a coach, you sort of feel like a parent — you never want to bury your kids before yourself, you know?” Lord said. With fall practice for football having begun July 31, Lord said he hopes his current players — many of whom had not met Riley — would learn to play the game with the passion he did. “He didn’t come off the field; I couldn’t get that kid off the field,” Lord recalled. “He just came from a great family — awesome people.” In honor of Riley, Foundation Academy will retire his number — No. 62 — during the team’s first home game Aug. 25 against Cambridge Christian.

THE BASICS
SCHOOL: SunRidge Middle School GRADE: 6 TEAM: Windermere Little League Minors Softball All-Stars POSITION: First base
What is one piece of advice your coach has given you that’s helped your game? Stay positive. If you make a bad play, move on to the next one.
What do you like about playing first base? I’m a lefty, so I love being in the infield, because I feel like I get to do more things there.
What is one thing you feel you need to improve on? Paying attention to the ball when I hit and finding ways to get on base to help my teammates score.
How do you think your team did this season? I think we did (well). We didn’t get down, and we always stayed positive.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Super speed, because then I’d be able to run the bases really fast.
What was it like going into the tournament? It was kind of nervous, because we wanted to win. I hoped we would do OK and try our best. It was probably the best game we played the whole tournament.
What is your favorite animal? Dogs, because they’re cute. What do you like to do for fun? Play with my softball friends or play on the iPad. I like to watch YouTube videos. — BRITTANY GAINES
When Roy died from the incurable blood cancer, cycling to raise money toward research for a cure was a no-brainer. Roy was “the Putz to my Moron, from the Grumpy Old Men movies,” as Perlmutter likes to say, and the two had originally planned to do a cross-country Portland to Portland ride once they retired. CYCLING FOR A CAUSE
Fifteen years ago, Perlmutter’s hobby of choice was golf. But golfing wasn’t cheap, so Perlmutter took up a friend’s offer to come cycling with him one weekend. He got out an old, steel Huffy bike that weighed about 100 pounds and hit the trails. “I got into riding with him and started doing 30, 40, 50 miles,” Perlmutter said. “I did a crossFlorida ride and got a new bike.” That’s when the planning for a cross-country ride began. But in June 2011, Roy called Perlmutter, asking him if he was sitting down. That’s when his best friend said he had multiple myeloma. Research, even just five years ago, wasn’t where it is today. Roy’s progression was quick, and he died in February 2012. “Along that time and right before he passed, I said, ‘You know something? I’m gonna do a long-distance bike-ride fundraiser in your honor when you die,’” Perlmutter said. It was half in jest, half completely serious. Perlmutter chose the MMRF because it is the leader in multiple myeloma research, having developed and introduced four new cancer treatments within the span of a year. In his opinion, he said, the foundation is doing more in this field than just about anywhere else in the world. He ended up connecting with Alicia O’Neill, director of business development and partnerships for MMRF. She assisted him in setting up contacts every day of his 17-day ride in 2012. She also has been instrumental in coordinating and bringing to fruition Perlmutter’s next endeavor — a 3,400-mile ride over the span of 50 days, from Los Angeles to Connecticut. Starting Sept. 3, Perlmutter will join seven others on the 50-day journey. Other riders will begin with them in Los Angeles and ride to Flagstaff.

Roy Gross, left, and Marty Perlmutter were the best of friends and loved golfing together.
HOW TO HELP
Marty Perlmutter must raise $15,000 for multiple myeloma research before he embarks on his 3,400mile cross-country ride Sept. 3. To learn more about his cause and to donate, visit endurance.themmrf. org/RoadToVictories/MartyPerlmutter.
Each rider is required to raise at least $15,000 for MMRF, and the overall team goal is $400,000. Currently, they are about halfway to their goal. Some of the riders he is joining, in fact, are multiple myeloma patients themselves. Seven days of the trip will require the team to ride 95 miles or more. And of the 50 days, 45 will be spent just riding. “For me it’s a question of, ‘Can a 66-year-old guy ride 3,400 miles in 50 days?” Perlmutter said. “I don’t know if I can do it; but my mind says I will do it.” NEVER LOSING TRACK
Roy and Perlmutter met when they were in their 20s. They, along with their wives, Pam and Barbara, became the best of friends quickly. “They were our best buddies,” Perlmutter said. “We would do everything to prank each other to play jokes on each other. Whenever we were together, I was always making him (Roy) laugh. When we lost him it was like, ‘Wow.’ When a member of your peer group dies, (you realize) you’re not immortal.” It was an invaluable friendship unlike any other. As Perlmutter puts it, you have friends and then you have friends.
“I have golfing friends, pool table friends, but Roy was the yin to my yang,” he said. “We played off each other all the time. If you’re fortunate enough to have one relationship like that in your lifetime — we’ve been fortunate enough to have a couple of them.” It’s people like Roy who Perlmutter calls his heroes. Both the multiple myeloma patients’s daily fights and the strides MMRF is making is what moves him to push himself and help further research in their honor. “What the foundation has done in the last five to seven years is make tremendous strides in being able to manage your disease,” he said. “I don’t want my friend Roy to die because he got the disease before they had something that could really help him.” “He’s a very focused individual, determined to do whatever he sets his mind to,” said Marty’s wife, Barbara Perlmutter. “We’ve been married for over 45 years and work next to each other. I’m going to miss him and be a little nervous (for him) on certain areas. I’m excited that he’s going to do it, and I know he’s going to be OK, that’s the main thing. They’ll take good care of him.” Ultimately, Perlmutter said, he’s happy to do something that will make a difference and help find a cure or treatment. “I can’t cure cancer, but I’m still healthy enough where I can go out, ride and get something done,” he said. “Friends keep telling me what a nice thing I’m doing and keeping the memory of Roy alive five years later. When someone’s important in your life, you don’t forget them. …You never lose track of what they meant to you.”

Five questions for fall football
Monday brought with it the official beginning of the 2017 high-school football season. In the spirit of the first week of fall camp, here are five big questions we have as the Ocoee Knights, West Orange Warriors, Foundation Academy Lions, CFCA Eagles and Legacy Charter Eagles begin their respective journeys.
1
3
STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR
Who will the new leaders be for the Ocoee Knights? Following its best season in program history, the Ocoee football program experienced an offseason full of change, from a change at the head coach position to a handful of transfers. Even still, the Knights have a number of talented underclassmen who got their feet wet during last fall’s district-championship season. The question becomes one of leadership, since the 2016 team had a strong core of senior leaders who defined that squad’s identity — and they left big shoes to fill. As important as anything else that goes on these next two weeks will be who emerges as the new leaders in the huddle.
Who is the next big-time back for Foundation Academy? The Foundation Academy Lions have had a ton of success running the football over the past three seasons or so — it’s hard not to when players such as Gabe Walker and Jaquan Patterson were getting the bulk of the carries. This fall, head coach Brad Lord believes he may have his strongest offensive line yet. Now all he needs is someone to run behind it. Although it’s not realistic to find an immediate replacement for the likes of Walker, who now plays for The Citadel, or Patterson, set to start his career at Charleston-West Virginia, the Lions will need someone to try and make the most of an impressive front five.

24 HOUR EMERGENCY SERVICE

How youthful will the CFCA Eagles be this fall? If followers of high-school football here in West Orange have learned anything over the past four years, they should have learned not to sleep on the CFCA football program. With each challenge thrown its way, including the well-documented revolving door of its coaching staff, it has been the players who have responded and surpassed expectations on each occasion. This fall, the program has a young, enthusiastic coach who wants to be present, so the question becomes whether this roster — which was young in 2016 — can grow into itself in 2017 after some key seniors graduated and a handful of transfers moved on.

Who will get the ball to the West Orange Warriors’ impressive corps of receivers? There is a lot to be excited about when it comes to the West Orange Warriors’ stable of young, talented wide receivers. Whether it is Darrell Harding, Najji Allen or Russell Robinson — three underclassmen who had to step up in a big way last year during a tough 2016 season — as well as Ocoee-transfer Keyshawn Goins, there is plenty of playmaking ability on the Warriors’ depth chart. The question becomes: Who throws them the ball? The West Orange quarterback competition is shaping up as a duel between Elijah Stimmell and Brenden Cyr. Whoever prevails, the task will be simple: get your playmakers the ball.

Will skill position players for Legacy Charter be able to learn on the fly? A large graduated class from 2017 in addition to some other departures mean head coach Jarrett Wiggers’ team will be rolling out a number of inexperienced players at important positions, such as the defensive backfield and offensive skill positions. Legacy has a history of playing as a well-coached, disciplined team, so that inexperience shouldn’t be in surmountable, but at the same time, it will be an important storyline throughout fall camp whether these new faces can learn their new roles quickly.

he title “The Queen of Windermere” isn’t given to just anyone, for any reason. Longtime Realtor Suzi Karr is often referred to by this title. Maybe it’s because she’s been a Windermere resident for more than 40 years and is well-versed in its history. Maybe it’s because she owned and operated Suzi Karr Realty for 35 years. Coupled with her service-first approach to real estate, all of the above might be indicators of the nickname. After having owned and operated Suzi Karr Realty for so long, though, she recently decided it was time for a change. So she sold the office and in June of this year moved on to become a realestate professional with Premier Sotheby’s International Realty in Dr. Phillips. “I stayed with the office and was active, but many of my clients are repeat clients and referrals, and
I’m blessed to get referrals from other Realtors,” she said. “It was time for me to move on. I thought it out, because it was going to be a big move after 40 years (in the profession), and I felt like Sotheby’s had the best marketing and international presence, which I think is so very important.” IN THE BEGINNING
Karr began her career in real estate 40 years ago, and for the first four, she worked for real-estate broker Lee Bekemeyer, still a friend of hers to this day. “I started out (my career) knowing I had to do whatever I had to do to make money,” she said. “I lived in Windermere and worked in Winter Garden. I wanted to really (just) work Windermere.” After her fourth year, she decided she wanted to open her own business and service the people in the town she loves so much. “I love giving that firsthand service because you almost become family with the clients,” SEE KARR PAGE 22
Making her move Windermere Realtor Suzi Karr, also known as “The Queen of Windermere,” recently transitioned from her own firm to Premier Sotheby’s International Realty.

she said. “I did the one-week crash course, and the minute I found out I passed, I opened my office in old Windermere, where I live. We were just ready for some changes. I had two associates at the time, and we had a good market, too. It was just dynamite, and it went from there.” At the time, flyers were a newer concept, so she began utilizing them in her business. She learned how to use a computer in 1990, and eventually, her two sons came aboard and worked with her. And all this time, she has lived in the same house in old Windermere for 35 years. In addition to Florida, Karr also has held real-estate licenses in Hawaii and California. She currently holds a Gold Key certification, as well as her Home Staging certification. “I just obtained my certification as a certified home stager, and I love that, because I can help people use what they have to make their homes more appealing for a potential buyer,” she said. “I just love my profession. I don’t plan to ever stop. I love helping others. Whatever I can do to help others is kind of my way of doing things.” GREAT PROFESSION
247007
Budge S. Huskey, president of Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, said Karr is a veteran associate with a wealth of knowledge to be shared with Sotheby’s southwest Orlando team. “Having led a successful real estate business in the community, Suzi has her finger on the pulse of Windermere,” Huskey said in a
prepared statement. “Her proven commitment to assisting and guiding her colleagues, as well as her dedication to her customers, we are sure she will make an immediate and positive impact on the organization.” Karr now focuses much of her knowledge and efforts on luxury lakefront properties and old Windermere. “You still have your forté, but I have now narrowed myself down into the area here — old Windermere and the Chain of Lakes,” she said. “You have to keep up with what’s going on in the area. You just have to be very informed at all times, and I try to be.” That includes staying informed on the state of the industry in West Orange County and the areas surrounding Windermere. With the continued growth and increase in population, new homes are cropping up everywhere — which means resales are now competing with new homes, Karr said. “The new homes offer a lot of features that we don’t have in the old homes,” she said. “I try to stress to people that they need to keep their homes maintained perfectly and then when you go to sell it it needs to be almost modeled perfectly, which most of the time can be done easily with what you have. The main thing you need to show when people walk in your house is spaciousness and cleanliness.” But no matter the part of town or the client, Karr’s mantra remains clear — service first. “These people become extended family to me, and it’s just a blessing that I get so many calling ready to list or a friend is ready to buy, it’s just a great feeling,” she said. “It’s a great profession.”

Which of These Costly Homeseller Mistakes Will You Make When You Sell Your South West Orlando Home? South West Orlando Home - A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money.
mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar”.
This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their homes and become disillusioned and - worse - financially disadvantaged when they put their homes on the market.
