Windermere, Ocoee police officers awarded for altruism

Windermere Police Chief David Ogden awarded Windermere police officer Robbie Harrison and Ocoee police officer Brian Harris with awards for their bravery in trying to save two people from a burning truck in Jacksonville. NEWS EDITOR WEST ORANGE Running toward danger is part of the normal job duties for police officers. But it was the last thing Windermere police officer Robbie Harrison and Ocoee police officer Brian Harris expected on the drive back to their hotel from class at the Institute of Police Technology and Management in Jacksonville. As part of their goal to become certified Drug Recognition Experts for their respective agencies, the two officers had been attending classes at the institute when they stumbled upon a crash scene Friday, June 16, on Interstate 95. The crash appeared to have occurred only moments before, Harris said. A box truck collided with an overpass support pillar. The two off-duty police officer immediately stopped and ran over to the scene to offer assistance. Their assistance turned into a

desperate seven- to nine-minute fight to save the lives of two occupants trapped inside before the smoke billowing out of the truck transformed into flames that could consume them alive. But their efforts were thwarted by the condition of the truck. The front of the truck was so smashed in, they struggled to pry the doors open and extract the driver and passenger. Upon noticing a glow under the dashboard by the floor on the driver’s side, the two officers began asking civilians who had stopped for fire extinguishers, bottles of water and tools to help pry open the doors. But the heat from the fire eventually killed the trapped passenger. “The flames become very strong on the passenger side, and eventually the recovery efforts on the passenger side, you could tell, were no longer needed,” Harrison said after a pause. “It was probably the most horrific thing I’ve ever witnessed.” The men then focused their efforts on the driver, who had managed to get himself halfway out of the vehicle, even though his legs were trapped by the smashed dashboard. “At one point, the flames started to really get going, and it was hard just to stand next to him,” said Harris, who has served the

Ocoee Police Department for 10 years. Once the local fire department arrived, firefighters extinguished the flames and extracted the driver. The driver was airlifted to a hospital but later succumbed to his extensive injuries. Although the efforts to save the men were unsuccessful, both officers and their peers know they both tried the best they could to save them. The traumatic incident and their show of bravery and altruism earned Harrison the Award of Valor — the highest award one could be given in the Windermere Police Department — and Harris was recognized by Windermere Police Chief David Ogden with the Chief’s Special Award. During the upcoming Sept. 19 Ocoee City Commission meeting, the roles will be reversed, and Harris will receive the Award of Valor while Harrison will receive the Chief’s Special Award. “We didn’t ask for any recognition because, in the end, we weren’t successful,” said Harrison, who has served the Windermere Police Department for nearly five years. “We did what we could, but the outcome was still the same, but after talking with some people, we realized we just did what we felt we had to do. And that’s we’ve signed up to do — we run toward the danger.”

collaborate to make the fundraiser successful, and both on- and offduty units are able to help man the table outside Publix and collect money to fill the boots. The collaboration allows units to stay in service so there is no lapse in fire-rescue coverage, should a call come in. Although WGPF doesn’t have a set goal for fundraising, many members are competitive by nature and try to raise more than they did the previous year. The money collected will be counted before WGPF and the fire department team up to present a check to the local MDA coordinator. “We appreciate the support from the fire department and the city,” Schneider said. “It’s important to us that we do give back — we have charities we support that mean a lot to us within the fire service, and this is definitely one of them. This year it felt a little extra special for us, and we’re happy to be able to do our part.”

by the West Point Commons Publix in Winter Garden lately, you might have seen firefighters stationed outside, holding boots to fill with money. The annual “Fill the Boot” fundraiser is the result of a decadeslong partnership between the International Association of Fire Fighters and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. “It’s extremely important to us, something we in Winter Garden have been involved with even before we organized as a union,” said Jason Schneider, president of the Winter Garden Professional Firefighters. “It’s such a worthwhile cause, a great charity and they do great work. The work the MDA does is absolutely fantastic, so we’re proud to be a part of it and to play our role.” In addition to the fundraiser, WGPF volunteers annually at the local MDA summer camp, held at Camp Thunderbird. The firefighters cook for the counselors and campers and get to meet the kids for which they are raising funds. “It’s one of those things where you get to be there face-to-face with the people your fundraising is actually helping,” Schneider said. “It’s one of our favorite events of the year.” The firefighters from Winter Garden Fire Rescue and WGPF

The original hardwood floors in the 1901 frame-vernacular home, which once had been restored to their original honey-glazed coloring, are slowly turning various shades of black and white. In front of the fireplace, sheets of plywood cover an area that turned spongy enough to step right through the wood floors. And those are just a few of the damages they have experienced in the last couple of years. When the Butlers bought their house on Tildenville School Road — right next to Meadow Marsh, which once belonged to Luther F. Tilden — in 2014, it had been renovated with some modern touches but retained much of its historic charm and condition. The house once was surrounded by wooded areas and vegetation to the south and west of the property, which eventually was cleared for development of the nearby Oakland Park community. “We knew it was going to happen and were fully aware of the development, so it wasn’t a surprise,” Austin said. “But when they clear-cut the land, it seems like they forgot to install drainage or anything, because within a few months of living here, we experienced extensive flooding onto the property.” WHAT HAPPENED?

There were no previous issues with water runoff, but suddenly the Butlers’ gravel driveway washed away because of the flooding, Christine Butler said. Any time they had an inch of rainfall, they could expect up to 3,000 cubic feet of water on the property. After speaking to Oakland Park’s project manager about the flooding, the Butlers were told it would get fixed. But as some time passed, the Butlers said, their neighbor reached out and asked if they were having flooding issues. The neighbor and his attorney wrote a letter to Oakland Park and developer Crescent Communities stating concerns of drainage and asking what could be done to resolve it. Shortly thereafter, the Butlers met with the city of Winter Garden to discuss the issue. After a site visit from city representatives, during which both proper-

ties and drainage were examined, the Butlers said the city was able to put a stop-sale on nearby Oakland Park homes until the drainage was fixed. After the developer built the swales on both the south and west boundaries and installed drainage, the couple noticed the excessive water runoff was no longer an issue. Now, it’s a matter of attempting to recover damages. “After the swale was dug and runoff stopped, we started trying to contact the developer and got engineers coming out to get reports for how much damage was there,” Austin said. Crescent maintains the project was engineered properly. “This phase was built according to the engineered plans that were approved by the city of Winter Garden,” said Thom Cunningham, vice president of Crescent Communities. “Oakland Park continues to be developed in accordance with Crescent’s core principles, including a focus on sustainability and stewardship of the land within the community and the surrounding areas.” STANDSTILL

Christine said they got mold testing done and a general diagnosis of the state of the floors, among other examinations. Although the true extent of the damage is not yet known, preliminary observations show the floors were damaged completely and some foundation piers had shifted, among

other types of structural mending needed. This includes — but is not limited to — lifting the house, replacing the floors and removing everything from the property. Additionally, the Butlers will have to relocate for the extent of the restoration. “Everyone (who) came out and looked told us the real danger comes in when it starts to dry out, because that’s when the rotting starts,” Austin said. “That’s when the boards start turning white and black, because the saturation is gone and it’s rotting.” One day, Christine noticed the floor felt soft. As she gently pushed some of the boards with her thumb, she said, it was so spongy her thumbnail was going through it. “I called him sobbing, and I didn’t feel safe in my own house,” she said. “These boards can’t be salvaged. We were hopeful when we were talking to the restorationist, and he said absolutely not. There was a point where we wanted to take a couple of pieces and make a frame or something, but they’re so rotted now, we can’t do it. “We have all the pictures from when the house got listed online, we have pictures of baby Daisy (our dog) and you can see in that amount of time things are starting to change,” Christine said. “There’s a picture of (Daisy) sitting on the floor where my foot went through, and it was perfect.” Now, the couple said, they just

Chandler considers options local Democratic leaders of pressuring him to resign. According to an email written by Chandler, representatives from the Orange County Democrats and Florida Democratic Party have bombarded the candidate with emails, calls and unannounced office and home visits. Chandler is the sole Democratic candidate in the special election race that seeks to fill a vacant seat caused by the appointment of Eric Eisnaugle to the Fifth District Court of Appeals. Republican Robert “Bobby” Olzsewski won his party’s primary Aug. 15. Chandler, who also is facing a lawsuit against him that seeks to disqualify him from the race, said his party’s pressure for him to resign is what drove him to send out Tuesday’s press release announcing his intention to resign.

Amy Quesinberry,

However, Chandler said he’s had a change of mind and is unsure of whether he’ll commit to a resignation and file the required paperwork with the Secretary of State’s office. “Based on the harassment of the Orange County Democrats, Wes Hodge, the chairman, coming to my apartment and to my office unannounced, and the Florida Democrat Party to resign and submit the paperwork ASAP, I am being pressured to resign,” Chandler said. “With the feedback of grassroots supporters who actually believed in our campaign, I am still considering options.” Hodge, chairman of the Orange County Democrats, did not deny he has made multiple attempts to contact Chandler so they could name a new nominee and have adequate time to prepare them

before the election Oct. 10. However, according to Chandler, Hodge had been hounding him to resign even before he announced his withdrawal. “For some reason, he’s refusing to send in his paperwork to withdraw from the race even though he issued a public statement that he is not intending to run anymore,” Hodge said. “I guess he thinks he’s holding the party hostage. … It seems pretty juvenile. I’ve made multiple attempts to contact him. I’ve sent emails, text messages, made phone calls, but he won’t reply to me.” According to state law, the Democratic party has five days to nominate a replacement for Chandler once or if, Chandler decides to officially withdraw. But if a judge rules Chandler never met the qualifications to run per state law, the Democratic party

The Butlers’ 1,889-squarefoot house on Tildenville School Road was built in 1901, according to records from the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation. want someone to take responsibility and help fix their home. “We’re not trying to get rich off a big development or anything; we just want to live in our house the way it was when we bought it,” Austin said. “We’re really fortunate to have been able to be talking to people who understand. It went from us having a problem and trying to have a conversation, to us trying to get help from (the developer), to getting the city to resolve it.” “It’s special here,” Christine said. “It’s our little homestead.”

will not be allowed a nomination. The lawsuit, which Chandler said he is confident he will win, accuses him of not meeting the two-year residency requirement needed to run for state office. According to court documents filed with the Leon County Circuit Court in Tallahassee, Chandler was registered to vote in a Missouri election as recently as November 2016. Emphasizing the hard work he’s invested in this race, the Democratic candidate said he plans to make his ultimate decision on his own terms. “I have made this race my top priority this year,” Chandler said. “As the only candidate to step forward to run without the recruitment of the Democratic Party, I have the right to officially end my campaign when I end it.”

Farm owner Rebecca Berry, a 30-year Winter Garden resident who rescues animals from conditions of abuse and neglect, returned from a lunch date with her father that day to a heartbreaking scene. One of her two female goats, named Clover, was lying unresponsive on the ground. Although it wasn’t entirely unusual for Clover to lie on the ground, Berry called out to the 2-and-onehalf-year-old female goat from a distance to make sure she was all right. “I said, ‘Hey Clove. You OK?’ But she didn’t move or acknowledge me,” Berry said. “And I was like, ‘Clover!’ when she didn’t respond again, that’s when I knew there had to be something wrong. So I went over there, and you can tell she was dead.” The horrid realization shocked Berry, particular after noticing Clover’s body was still warm and there was clearly a gunshot wound in one of her rear legs. Berry assumes the bullet, which left both an entrance and exit wound, hit one of her main arteries and caused her to bleed out. “I just can’t imagine someone calling one of my animals up to the property and just shooting them,” Berry said, choking back tears. “I mean you think you’re safe because Winter Garden is pretty far from Orlando, you know? …. I’ve been in this area for 30 years, and for something like this to happen — it completely just rocked my entire world.”

Berry said she and a parent of one of the children she trains to ride horses called the police to report the incident. The police officer created an incident report but informed Berry there was not much they could do without any evidence, which she suspected might happen considering no one saw anything. After collecting her emotions, Berry posted the details of the incident on Facebook to warn nearby pet owners to be careful. “I thought it was necessary to let the community know because if someone is sick enough to call a goat up to the gate and shoot them without any repercussions, then it’s up to us to keep an eye out for this person,” Berry said. “Who knows? Maybe he has shot another dog or another goat and they just didn’t report it or put it on Facebook. I just hope that by getting the word out maybe I could prevent someone else from losing their animal.” Since Clover’s death, Berry has rehomed her other goat, Bambi, and a donkey. She also plans to move her horses from a pasture located in the front of her property to a pasture in the back to reduce the risk of them also being harmed. “I’ve had this farm for 19 years, and I’ve been in the Winter Garden area for about 30 years. But after this incident, I just don’t feel comfortable leaving them out there until I get a security system,” she said. Anyone wishing to help Berry may contact her directly at (407) 402-5900.

Oakland Police Department detectives have arrested a suspect they believe is responsible for numerous home burglaries. With the assistance of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, Oakland police served a search warrant to Oakland resident Daniel Rashad Monroe Tuesday, Aug. 15. While searching Monroe’s residence, OCSO’s SWAT team discovered a green backpack containing 175 pieces of jewelry, three cellphone cases and six electronic cords. Monroe, 33, also was arrested during the search and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, dealing in stolen property and false verification/ ownership, second-hand dealing, armed burglary of a dwelling with a firearm, grand theft in the third degree and criminal mischief. According to the police report, Monroe sold items he’d stolen from homes at a variety of pawn shops. A search conducted on restricted-access websites available to law-enforcement personnel showed Monroe had pawned 12 items at different pawn shops since June, according to the report. Included among the items Monroe had recently pawned

Oakland residents produce petition for street paving Residents are tired of the constant flying dust and damaging potholes along East Henschen Avenue. AMY QUESINBERRY COMMUNITY EDITOR

A majority of the residents living on East Henschen Avenue in Oakland have had enough of the dust that fills the air every time a car passes, and they’re tired of the constant layer that settles on their porches and patios. They have presented a petition to the town asking for their road to be paved, and the Oakland Town Commission discussed the issue at its Aug. 22 meeting. Five months ago, the town embarked on an extensive stormwater and drainage improvements project along Henschen, which had decades-old lines and is historically a low area. Some residents along that street have complained to the town about the dust, the potholes, the length of time it has taken to finish the project and the abundance of construction equipment in their front yards. Public Works Director Mike Parker said the summer’s heavy rains have contributed to the delay of the six-month project — and have created a mess on the dirt road. The town recorded more than 15 inches of rain in a 21-day period. Of the 16 homes on East Henschen, 11 homeowners are in favor of paving; the others were either opposed or were not home when the petition was passed around.

The commission debated the charm of dirt roads versus the practicality of paving certain streets. Mayor Kathy Stark said no dirt streets have been paved in more than 20 years, other than a repaving or new construction. “The value of the town is the roads and the trees,” Commissioner Sal Ramos said. Residents argue that Henschen was a quieter road until it became a connector street between Winters and Starr streets after the Winters Landing neighborhood was built. Starr will be paved through an agreement with the Oakland Park development when the neighborhood’s phases six and seven are built several years from now. Several Henschen residents spoke at the meeting, including Lana Wilken Gies. “I don’t want paved roads, but the potholes, things breaking off my car, it’s dusty,” she said. “As a resident, I want nothing more than the dirt roads; it’s just gotten to where it’s not even fun to live on this street.” Bill Ungaro, another Henschen homeowner, said he doesn’t mind the dust but is opposed to the increase in traffic along his street, particularly during drop-off and pick-up times at Oakland Avenue Charter School. Engineers will be looking at these issues, Parker said. The commission is waiting for more

BUDGET UPDATE Under the consent agenda, the commission adopted the Fiscal Year 2017 budget for Oakland Avenue Charter School in the amount of $4,266,339 and scheduled the following September meetings: budget workshop, 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, followed by a commission meeting at 7 p.m.; and final budget approval at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26.

facts before making a decision but agreed a traffic study is warranted. Stark said some of the issues mentioned can be addressed immediately, but there is no money in the budget to pave this section of East Henschen, which would cost about $20,000. Parker hopes the residents can be patient a little longer. “For a small town, this is a large project,” Parker said. WASTEWATER RATES

Commissioners heard an update from Tony Hairston, senior manager at Raftelis Financial Consultants, regarding wastewater impact fees and wastewater rates. Several years ago, the town anticipated the wastewater rates would reach $60 for every 5,000

gallons of water used monthly. Now that all the future development numbers are accounted for, Public Works Director Mike Parker said the actual amount is lower, at $49 per 5,000. This rate takes into consideration the anticipated buildout, which includes 305 homes in Oakland Trails, 150 at Hull Island and 84 single-family and 400 multi-family homes in Pulte Homes’s Longleaf neighborhood. As more customers are added to the wastewater system, that amount could decrease even more, Parker said. In West Orange County, Winter Garden residents pay $26.14 per 5,000 gallons, Orange County residents pay $34.58, and Ocoee residents pay $35.12. Currently, developers pay wastewater impact fees of $678 per residential unit. “We are going to propose an increase to $990 in the very near future to provide for anticipated capital improvements and expansion of the town’s wastewater system,” Parker said. Town staff will propose the new rate at an upcoming town commission meeting. This is for new-home construction for connections to the new sewer system. Existing residents will be able to connect to the system, Parker said, but it could be 15 years or more before the lines are close enough.

MOVING FORWARD WITH MOBILITY The town of Oakland held its second in a series of Mobility Master Plan charrettes in early August with engineering consultant firm Kittleson & Associates Inc., and new ideas were shared. Also revealed was the grid network of future streets that will tie historic Oakland to upcoming development along West Colonial Drive. J.P. Weesner, of Kittleson, explained how the Transit-Oriented Development concept can be used in Oakland with a transit hub at Tubb Street and West Colonial Drive. The idea incorporates green space with a Lynx bus pick-up and drop-off, and the area would have a mix of shopping, offices and residences. All of this would be connected by a multimodal transportation system using streets, bike paths and sidewalks. Another component of this mobility plan is how to keep drivers, walkers and bikers moving once they are in the town limits. A combination of robust trail systems and multiple roundabouts — as well as an additional east-west roadway and a continuation of the current grid system — could be the answer. Weesner said roundabouts could possibly be located at Oakland Avenue and Tubb and at Oakland and Machete Trail. A bike-share program also could be instituted, and residents would be able to rent a bike at one location and leave it at another. Town Planner Jay Marder said a Master Mobility Management Plan will be presented to the Oakland Town Commission in late September or early October. — AMY QUESINBERRY

In addition to the change of location, the nonprofit also will be undergoing a change of leadership. Cook has decided to step down at the end of this year and hand over the reins to Brenden Rogers. Cook said the reason for the change of direction was to infuse the organization with new ideas so it can continue growing in the coming years. “(Rogers) will take it in a new direction,” Cook said. “He was actually the one who suggested moving (the festival) to Mount Dora. He’s got enthusiasm and a lot of great ideas. He’s a real movie buff, and he’s got his own movie company. I think he’ll be perfect.” This year’s festival, which is its 12th year of operation, kicks off Friday, Sept. 1, and lasts through Sunday, Sept. 3. The festival includes 70 films, including short films, documentaries and foreign films representing 11 different countries. Showtimes start as early as 9:30 a.m. on all three days. There are several highlights of this year’s event, Cook said, including visits from several Hollywood celebrities. Friday night will feature the world premier of “Garlic and Gunpowder.” After the film, a question-and-answer session will be held with director Harrison Smith and leading actress Felissa Rose. On Saturday, the festival will host a special fundraising event for the onePulse Foundation, which will be hosted by Lee Meriwether and Jeffrey A. Johns. The featured films during this fundraiser will be “Tolerance,” “Hookup,” “The News Today” and “Still Waiting In The Wings.” Addition Q&A sessions will be held — one on Saturday with actor Robert Carradine and another on Sunday with actor John Ashton. Of all the films entered into the festival, Cook recommended “Treasure,” which was written and directed by University of Central Florida graduate Chris Williamson. “It’s a coming-of-age kind of movie, so it’s something the whole family can enjoy,” Cook said. Cook estimates that about 200,000 people will attend the weekend event. “It’s bigger and better than it’s ever been,” Cook said about the festival.

FROM THE ARCHIVES School days aren’t always strictly centered on reading, writing and arithmetic; extracurricular activities go a long way toward rounding out a pupil’s formal education. Tildenville Elementary School student musicians are pictured in this image from 1955 with their instructor, Mr. Hawn. Most have been identified; give the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation a call at (407) 656-3244 if you can help fill in the blanks. Front row, from left, Varnadoe (first name unknown), Chuck Mullins, Tommy Voss, unknown student, Doug Tilden; rear, from left, Jean Rodgers, Karen Boyer and Joyce Rogers.

This included gasoline fillups, an on-duty mechanic and repair shop and truck rentals. Snacks such as sodas and chips were for sale, as well. PANIC ON PLANT STREET

1319 Green Forest Ct, Suite 412 Winter Garden, FL 34787

247048

Does the thought of scaring people excite you? Do you have an evil habit of hiding and waiting to jump out at someone? Then the Winter Garden Masonic Lodge has a volunteer gig just for you. The lodge is holding auditions for its first Panic on Plant Street haunted house at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, and Wednesday, Sept. 6, at the lodge, 230 W. Bay St. Mimi’s Community Theater is conducting the tryouts. Lorraine Patria, the theater’s founder, said those auditioning do not need to prepare a monologue or wear a costume. “As we narrow down the characters, we may ask them to do certain sounds or movements needed for the part,” she said. All ages, teens and older, are invited to audition. Of particular interest are twin girls (think “The Shining”). For information about the audition, contact Patria at (407) 864-5029 or lpatria212@yahoo. com.

The haunted house will be open for guests from 7 to 11 p.m. Oct. 27 through 29 and 31. Mike Kilgore, a Masonic officer, is known for his portrayal of Uncle Sam and Santa Claus at lodge events. Now he’s going in a different direction as Spiky the Clown this Halloween. Kilgore said the house will feature a maze appropriate for guests 8 and older to walk through and the six rooms will carry different themes. In addition to Spiky, guests can expect to see Sheba the Gorilla Girl and a fortuneteller, as well as a graveyard and mad scientist lab. A family-friendly area called the Chicken Coop will be available for younger children, and parents can even leave their little ones there while they enjoy the haunted house. Tickets are $10, and the lodge is setting up a way to pay online through the Panic on Plant Street Haunted House Facebook page. The money raised will help support the six local schools in the Masonic lodge’s Adopt-a-School program. In the next few weeks, you might catch a glimpse of a character dragging around a coffin at the Winter Garden Farmers Market to promote the event. Some of the downtown merchants have gotten involved, too, sponsoring the

Kilgore participated in a haunted house last year in Ocoee and was eager to do it again, but he thought Winter Garden needed one of its own. “There’s no haunted house down in Winter Garden,” he said. “I said, ‘Why aren’t we doing a haunted house?’ The guys at the Masonic lodge agreed, and so we’ve been building ever since.”

Her husband, Mike, was the mastermind behind the pattern. “Mike programmed an application that took an imported jpeg file and created a pixeled image,” she said. “The application was designed to take that pixeled image and, with some manual manipulation, produced a list of LEGO parts needed. That application also assisted with creating the individual building steps, which is how the kids and volunteers knew how to build it.” It took 50 to 55 hours to complete the giant image, and students worked on it during two weeks of day camp. Laurie Hallock said she and her family, including son Corey, worked on it in between camp sessions to

Up close, the mosaic doesn’t look like anything more than tens of thousands of randomly scattered LEGO bricks. But as you step back, an image emerges. The tan pieces become the faces of Jesus and his disciples, and the browns and grays and oranges become their robes. The Oakland Presbyterian LEGO User Group combined an art lesson with fun this summer, and the end result is a 10-footlong, 5-foot-tall re-creation of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” made entirely of LEGO bricks — 78,408, to be exact. The group wanted to embark on a permanent LEGO project, and after a year of brainstorming, Corey came up with the idea of re-creating “The Last Supper.” The next few years were spent planning and raising funds, Hallock said. The mosaic cost $4,600, she said. The funds were raised through day camp registration fees and a few additional LEGO Fun Days held last year during student holidays. The Hallocks recently returned from a BrickFair LEGO Expo in Virginia, where they displayed the artwork, and returned with the prize for Best Mosaic. “The Last Supper” will next travel to the Bricks N Blocks LEGO event in September. The club expanded to a summer day camp in 2013, and it offered more structured activities, such as robotics, organized build challenges, city builds and a daily Bible study. The club meets monthly. He also auditioned for the new ABC show “Boyband,” which recently finished its first season and produced the band In Real Life. High-caliber auditions can be intimidating, and Draheim said working past one’s insecurities is key. “If you think you can hit the note, hit the note, because if you second-guess yourself trying to hit the note, you will screw it up,” he said. “You know how good you are, you know what you’re capable of, so you just go in there and do your thing.” Although he ultimately did not make it to the next round of “American Idol” auditions, he

packed Disney Springs bright and early two weeks ago for “American Idol” auditions, Ocoee High graduate Jared Draheim was among them. The singer/songwriter was one of the many hopefuls who braved the heat for a shot at making it through to the next round of the singing competition. “American Idol” previously concluded its first run on Fox in 2016 after 15 seasons but has been revived for a second run by ABC. Producers have been traveling around the country for the last two weeks on the “American Idol” Bus Tour. Orlando was one of the first stops on the schedule. Many aspiring stars arrived at Disney Springs as early as 2 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, toting lawn chairs, water bottles, umbrellas and talent. Draheim arrived at 4:30 a.m. He first discovered his love for singing and playing music about seven years ago, when he heard a neighbor playing guitar and was drawn to the sound. “I used to do worship at my church, so that’s what kind of sparked it,” Draheim said. “But (one day) I heard a guitar playing in my neighborhood and I followed the sound of the guitar, and there was this dude playing it. I sat there and talked to him and he started showing me a few chords, and from there I started playing guitar.” The 21-year-old describes his

Eagles win in Coach Jeremy Campbell’s debut Caleb Brenyo’s three-touchdown performance highlighted Campbell’s first regular-season game as a head coach. CFCA held on for 21-13 win over host Cornerstone Charter. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

With less than a minute to play and the CFCA Eagles clinging to a one-point lead with host Cornerstone Charter Ducks in possession, a ballcarrier for Cornerstone fumbled. Given the way the game had gone, it only seemed fitting that senior Caleb Brenyo — who had scored the Eagles’ first two touchdowns — would be the one to scoop it up. “A lot of players say this,

but everything goes into slowmotion,” Brenyo said. “You pick it up, and by the time I started running, I was like, ‘This is going in the end zone — we got this.’” Brenyo’s scoop-and-score paired with one last stand from the CFCA defense to give the program its 21-13 win — its first under new head coach Jeremy Campbell in his first regular-season game as a head coach. “It was great,” Campbell said. “The kids came out, fought SEE YOUNG PAGE 20

Tara English After a transition to a new position as outside hitter, Tara English made an impressive start to the season during the Foundation Academy girl’s volleyball team’s home opener against Lake Forest. By the end of the game, English had landed six aces, five kills and seven digs — the best stats of the night. Her coach, Vicky Veloz, said she’s kept an eye on English and knew it was time to move her from the back row to the front row. “She’s got talent — that’s for sure,” Veloz said.

How did you feel going into the first home game of the season? Excited and nervous, because it was the first time playing outside. I haven’t played outside in a while. Did you surprise yourself by how well you played that first game? I really did. I wasn’t expecting to do that (well). I thought I would airball every single (hit), but it worked out.

What’s something you feel you need to work on now that you’re playing the front row? Jumping and blocking. And I’m getting used to playing all around right now. I’m used to only playing three rotations in and three rotations out. What’s it like being a starter for the first time this year? Coming from the last club season, I barely had any playing time. This is a change, but it’s nice. What was your reaction when you made those kills your first game? I didn’t know I could do that. It was wow. It’s a fun feeling. Why did you decide to start playing volleyball? My sister started playing before me. I went to all her tournaments and it looked cool. I wanted to play too, so I did. What do you like to do for fun? I like going out on the lake. I like all the lake sports. Wake boarding and tubing are always fun. What is your favorite TV show right now? “Once Upon a Time.” It’s such a good series. — BRITTANY GAINES

West Orange professionals team up to help LPGA pro Smart Fitness owner Andrew Noble and Kenny Nairn, a golf professional based in Windermere, are coming up on a year of partnering together to help LPGA pro Jacqui Concolino take her game to the next level. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR OCOEE It’s a Saturday morning in August, and Jacqui Concolino has just finished her workout. With some downtime between the RICOH Women’s British Open at the beginning of the month and the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open that began Aug. 24, Concolino took advantage of the opportunity to return to Central Florida, where she resides — and where her team is. That team includes Andrew Noble, a certified personal trainer and the owner of Smart Fitness in south Ocoee, where Concolino just finished her workout. It also includes Kenny Nairn, a Scottish PGA Professional and a managing partner at Central Florida Golf, who happens to be a Windermere resident. They’re a dynamic duo of sorts for the fifth-year pro on the LPGA, and on this Saturday, they are conferring with their client on a plan of action that she will take with her to Ottawa. “Andrew and Kenny have developed a really good relationship over the last 10 months,” Concolino said. “They talk to each other when I’m on the road. They’ll say, ‘Hey, this is what Jacqui’s doing in her swing, is there anything she can do in the gym?’ We’re always bouncing ideas off each other.”

THE PARTNERSHIP

Nairn has made the acquaintance of many golfers over the years, but he still remembers the first time he observed Concolino hitting off the tee. “It’s not often that you see someone that age, and especially a female, who hits the ball that far,” Nairn said. Not long after, Nairn started to train Concolino, who at the time was a prep golfer for Bishop Moore Catholic High. With that relationship now dating back more than a decade, Concolino said chemistry is what has made it so successful. “Personality-wise, we get along very well,” Concolino said. The working relationship with Noble does not go back nearly as far — the two met in 2010

LPGA golfer Jacqui Concolino, center, relies on personal trainer Andrew Noble, left, and golf pro Kenny Nairn to keep her at the top of her game.

— but it has become an important one in its own right. Noble, then a trainer for Lifestyle, had observed the rigor Concolino — who was on a break from golf at the time — exerted during her workouts, and he thought he could help. The two worked together for two years, until Concolino turned pro in 2012 and began to travel a lot. They reconnected early last fall, and the results have been tangible. “One of the things I mentioned to Andrew recently is that I feel like I’m getting stronger when I’m on the road for three or four weeks, rather than breaking down,” Concolino said. Noble will confer with Nairn and then he will put together a program that Concolino will do while she is on the road. IN THE HUNT

The results have been impressive, and all the more so considering the way technology enables the trio to work toward a common goal. Of course, at the end of the day, it is Concolino who puts the plan into action, and Noble said her work ethic is central to her success. “She works hard, and it’s showing,” Noble said. By showing, Noble is referring to her growing number of top15 finishes. Concolino recently placed 13th at the Ladies Scot-

tish Open in late July. A month before that, she finished 10th at the Meijer LPGA Classic. The highlight of 2017, though, was Concolino’s third-place finish at the ShopRite LPGA Classic the first week of June. Remarkably, the career that she is now enjoying was once in doubt. Feeling burnt out after her collegiate career at Vanderbilt University ended in 2009, Concolino took some time away from the game. After some downtime, she rediscovered her passion for the game that had been the center of her world since middle school. “I just needed to find myself,” she recalled. “I ... wanted to make sure that it was what I wanted to do, personally.” Now she is more motivated than ever. “I’ve been what you would consider ‘in the hunt’ probably a handful of times this year and — it’s addicting,” Concolino said. “It’s an adrenaline rush.” Helping her to continue to her chase of that adrenaline rush will be her West Orange-based team — a team that believes in her ability to become an elite golfer on the tour. “It’s only a matter of time — her peers know it and a lot of the broadcasters know it,” Nairn said. “She has all the capabilities to win — and when she does win, she won’t just win once.”

WEST ORANGE (0-1) AT FREEDOM (0-1), 7 P.M. DETAILS: The Warriors will hit the road to take on the Patriots, who were defeated by Evans in a rain-soaked game in Week One. Despite difficult conditions, Freedom’s Nicholas Wright demonstrated an ability to move the team up and down the field at quarterback. The two teams last met in 2014, with West Orange scoring a 43-6 win. OCOEE (0-1) AT OLYMPIA (1-0), 7 P.M. DETAILS: Two on similar trajectories the past two seasons — both had breakout seasons in 2016 that included playoff berths — will square off for the first time since 2012 on Friday. While Ocoee is a significantly different team than it was a season ago, relying heavily on young players, Olympia has several starters back from 2016. Of particular intrigue is return of former Knights running back Konrie Brown, who is now the leading rusher for the Titans.

LAKE MARY PREP (1-0) AT LEGACY CHARTER (0-1), 7 P.M. DETAILS: Lake Mary Prep is fresh off a convincing 47-0 win over Merritt Island Christian, during which quarterback Walker Dycus threw for three touchdowns, and Lionel Matos rushed for three more.

hard and grinded through the tough times.” Campbell’s roster skews young, with a large core of sophomores, and with that in consideration the first-year head coach is looking to players such as Brenyo to set the tone. “He’s been leading all summer,” Campbell said. “It’s definitely carried over — he had a huge game for us on Friday night.” Brenyo wasn’t alone in his strong play, either. Macena Gay, a junior halfback, ran for 198 yards in the Eagles’ opener. “He’s a workhorse — he does a lot for us,” Campbell said of Gay. CFCA will now hope to carry that momentum over into this week’s home opener against West Oaks (0-1). West Oaks was

trounced by The First Academy 47-0 in Week One, although it is hard to gauge much from that considering the Royals were a playoff team in Class 3A in 2016. Following Week One, Campbell and Brenyo feel good about CFCA’s future. “The majority of the guys on our team are 15 — they’re sophomores,” Brenyo said. “They stepped up — they bought in and they played well.” When the Eagles did get the final stop in the game’s waning seconds, they had to run one last play to run out the clock. That meant Campbell got to make a call that he and his staff had not even got around to practicing yet: the Victory Formation. “It was kind of neat to call a timeout and install it on the fly,” Campbell said.

INFORMATION Interested in learning more or getting involved with the Winter Garden Junior Squeeze? Contact David Ocasio by phone at (516) 637-7223 or by email at kasocasio@msn. com.

The roster for the first edition of the Winter Garden Junior Squeeze includes: David Acevedo, Wrigley Bates, Nicholas Caso, Jason Cortese, Justin Dennison, Charlie Eidelman, Luke Garrison, Rylee Gibson, Keston Gomez, Parker Hohnstock, Daniel Komarov, Josh Lore, Erick Martinez, Sims McClusky, Kas Ocasio and Leo Syljebeck.

and they all responded saying, ‘We should have more of these where it’s one day and you’re in and out.’” While Ocasio and the team’s other coaches — Adrean Acevedo, Bob Cortese and Luis Gomez — are focused on making sure the one team is a success for now, given the team’s size at 16 players, a second team could be a possibility. Families of players who are interested in getting involved and buying in to the Junior Squeeze’s concept of travel ball are encouraged to contact Ocasio, either by phone at (516) 637-7223 or by email at kasocasio@msn.com. As for the original Squeeze, it will be returning for the franchise’s fifth season in Winter Garden next summer. And, the way Bates sees it, maybe when they’re gearing up for a season down the road, a member of this current Junior Squeeze team eventually could play for the big club. “Hopefully in 10 or 11 years, they’re also playing for us,” Bates said. “It would be really neat if one or two of these kids ends up playing for their hometown team.”

because of their name cache and the fact that they’re in the collegiate summer league,” Ocasio said. “All of the kids have been to a Squeeze game. … We sat down with (Squeeze general manager) Adam (Bates), and he said ‘Hey, how about just becoming the Winter Garden Junior Squeeze?’ “We said that would be fantastic — a junior team that’s affiliated with a college summer team.” For Bates, who has a son who plays on the team and who has been the general manager for the Squeeze since its inception in 2014, the opportunity for a partnership such as this within the community is just good business. “We (the Squeeze) need to build a brand — we’re trying to be a year-round product and partner with the community,” Bates said. For Ocasio, the Junior Squeeze is also about finding a niche within the growing glut of travel-ball teams. Although the team is not affiliated with Winter Garden Little League, many of the team’s 16 players know each other through the league and have grown up playing together. Ocasio’s hope

is to provide an opportunity for those kids to continue to play with one another and to find a middle ground between the constant grind of what competitive travel ball has become and the absence of it, altogether. “I wanted to start an alternative to full-on travel ball,” Ocasio said. “I would go and observe, and I noticed that it takes a big toll on parents, siblings and the kids themselves. I just think that’s too much for kids that age.” The niche the Junior Squeeze is hoping to carve is one in which it plays fewer tournaments than an average travel ball team, with an emphasis on tournaments that are close to home — though one of Ocasio’s bigger projects for the team is an out-of-state trip for 2018. Because of how the Junior Squeeze is structured, costs to the families are lower, and for those families who choose, their boys are free to play on another travel team if they desire to play more often. The Junior Squeeze’s first games came Aug. 19 at the event at Foundation Academy’s South Campus on Tilden Road. Organized by Ocasio, the event was a one-day showcase, with the Junior Squeeze, the Elite City Grays, the GRIT and Future of Baseball. The Junior Squeeze went 2-1 that day, playing each team once, and Ocasio said the event was well-received by coaches from the other teams present. “All of the teams and coaches involved were local,” Ocasio said. “The teams seemed to love it,

“ Difference We Make a

“It’s always a great feeling when you help someone overcome a challenge. I thrive on that. “One of our clients was running a small weekly campaign for his flooring store for about a year. If he was going to move his sales needle, I felt he needed to invest more. “So we did some homework and found he was eligible for co-op advertising dollars through one of his vendors. “With help from the vendor we created new ads that paid 50% of the cost. “The client was able to double the size of his ad and increase his frequency for a six-month period. “The bigger ads paid off. His revenues grew — and his trust in us grew. “I love problem solving. This was all about building a relationship and creating solutions. “There’s a reason businesses keep advertising with the Observer. We make a difference.” Jaclyn Centofanti Advertising Manager
