Publix at Hamlin Cove is the second commercial development in the community, having opened just less than 10 months after the Walmart across the street. Windermere man accused of rapes requests bond

Power bills to increase in 2018

Darryl Patterson, who is currently facing four counts of sexual battery, asked the court to be released on bail until his October trial. GABBY BAQUERO NEWS EDITOR

After being denied bond in September 2016, Darryl Wayne Patterson, 50, has been in the Orange County Jail awaiting trial for four counts of sexual battery on a person physically unable to resist. But Patterson is now requesting Orange County Circuit Judge Mark Blechman to review the motion and grant him bail. During a hearing held Aug. 29, Windermere Police Detective John Allen took the stand to testify against granting Patterson bail. Allen told the court that, given Patterson’s history and the multiple cases he’s been charged with over a period of time, he’s concerned Patterson poses a threat to the community. “At this point, multiple women have reported being raped by him, and we have video recordings of him raping multiple women,” Allen said. “With that, we feel he obviously would pose a threat to the community — particularly after I interviewed him in February (2015) and then one of the women came forward in April and said he tried to rape her in March (2015) despite knowing that the police were investigating him.” Blechman was scheduled to review one of 28 recordings found in Patterson’s home that depicts Patterson engaging in sexual acts with women who were all unconscious. The judge planned to watch the footage before making his determination on whether or not to grant Patterson’s request. According to Allen, Patterson’s defense team argued that Patterson should be granted bail because the sexual acts shown in the video recordings do not represent a real rape. “The defense counsel argued that he did not pose a threat to the community and that the case wasn’t very strong and these cases aren’t real rapes, and that he wasn’t a flight risk because he has family here and he’s a good guy,” Allen said. Blechman was scheduled to make a ruling during the bond hearing Sept. 6 after press time.

With or without a pending settlement that allows Duke Energy to invest in smart meters and solar, Florida’s energy costs are below the national average. AMY QUESINBERRY COMMUNITY EDITOR

Duke Energy Florida has submitted its annual request to set 2018 electric rates with the Florida Public Service Commission, and there could be an 8.5% increase — to $128.54 per 1,000 kilowatts per hour. A Duke release based the increase on fuel costs, capacity, energy conservation and environmental costs. However, last month, Duke Energy filed a settlement agreement that could alter that increase. A decision should be

made by December. “This settlement agreement will include investments of nearly $6 billion over the next four years while minimizing the impact on customer bills,” said Ana Gibbs, Duke Energy’s senior communications consultant. “The settlement agreement includes investments in solar energy, smart meters, grid modernization projects to enhance reliability, (which) make the grid more resilient and secure, and optional billing programs to enhance customer choices. The agreement also includes plans to install electric vehicle charging

stations and a battery storage pilot program.” Residents currently pay $118.41 per 1,000 kWh. If the settlement is not approved, the January 2018 residential bill would be $128.54 per 1,000 kWh, according to Gibbs. If the agreement is approved, the bill would rise a smaller percentage, to $123.90 per 1,000, she said. The national average is $132.20 per 1,000, Gibbs said. “Through cost management and careful planning, Duke Energy Florida has made thoughtful investments to significantly enhance service reliability and reduce emissions for our customers,” Harry Sideris, president of Duke Energy Florida, said in the release.

Couple arrested, one still sought in armed burglary GABBY BAQUERO NEWS EDITOR WINDERMERE Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the armed burglary of a Windermere home, and one remains at large. The burglary, which took place at about 2 a.m. Aug. 20, was caught on video by the homeowner’s security system. The video depicts two men, one in possession of an assault rifle, smash in the front door to the residence before proceeding to steal $4,000 worth of electronic equipment in a matter of minutes. The men can be seen running in and out of the home carrying various objects, including a 65-inch

LG 4K television, a 17-inch Dell laptop and five computer monitors. John Fitzpatrick, 32, and Suzy Fitzpatrick, 25, are suspected of having been involved after still photographs captured from the video and published on various media outlets resulted in anonymous tips identifying John Fitzpatrick as the white male in the video. Following the leads, Windermere and Winter Garden detectives went to a mobile repair shop on South Dillard Street owned by John and Suzy Fitzpatrick Aug. 22 and interviewed Suzy Fitzpatrick. According to an arrest warrant, Suzy Fitzpatrick denied the bearded white man in the video

was her husband at first. She claimed, “That can’t be my husband,” and stated that at the time the video was taken, she and her husband were at a swinger’s club in Eustis. During further questioning, Suzy Fitzpatrick acknowledged the man was her husband and told detectives they were kidnapped at gunpoint by three guys as they were leaving their shop and forced to participate in the burglary. “As you can see, I’m not on the video,” Suzy Fitzpatrick is quoted in the warrant. “I was in the car.” After reviewing the security footage again on Aug. 24, detectives determined John Fitzpatrick was familiar with the black male suspect depicted in the video,

who goes by the street name “Goose,” because the black male called out to John Fitzpatrick as “Fitz” multiple times, and John Fitzpatrick did not appear to be under any sort of duress during the burglary. Suzy Fitzpatrick was arrested Aug. 28 by Winter Garden police at the mobile phone repair shop, and John Fitzpatrick was arrested Aug. 29 by the Gulfport Police Department in Mississippi. Anyone with information helpful in identifying the black male suspect should call Detective John Allen at (407) 909-5306 or email him at jallen@town.windermere. fl.us. thing to help. After all, it’s in the former police officer’s blood. Lovette started his gym nearly a year ago but previously worked as a police officer in Key West for nearly 15 years. When he started CrossFit, he knew he could continue to help people —but in a different way. Now, he and his CrossFit family — along with members of Hope Church Winter Garden and the community — recently sent off a U-Haul truck filled with supplies to Texas. “Being in Key West, we had Hurricane Wilma, we had Andrew, and my father was in Louisiana during Katrina and lost

everything,” Lovette said. “Hurricanes hit home and as soon as we saw it happening in Houston, I knew it was going to be bad. People go through their day-today lives because it’s not affecting them, but they don’t think, ‘What if that was us?’ I would hope that a mom somewhere in Texas would say, ‘Hey, let’s try to get stuff over there’ if that was us.” Lovette got in touch with Hope Church Pastor Wesley Beacham and suggested using CrossFit Winter Garden as a donation hub. From there, they took to social media, posting in the various Winter Garden-related Facebook pages and spreading the word throughout the community. “I went on all of the Winter Garden Facebook pages and said, ‘Listen, I know this isn’t yardsale approved but people need help, and if we can help, great. Whatever you can bring, bring it, and whatever it costs us to get it there, we’re going to get it there and help people,’” Lovette said. In the first two days of collecting donations, Lovette’s gym became storage for 170 cases of water, 12 cases of diapers, 25 bags of clothes and other items ranging from shoes and canned goods to pet food.

“People have been coming all day wanting to donate stuff — boxes of shoes, you name it,” he said. “People were like, ‘What do we bring?’ and I said, ‘Honestly, bring everything. People have lost everything.’ It’s not like they just need water or toilet paper, they lost everything. They lost their whole homes, all their clothes. We’ve had people drop off can openers, paper plates and dog food. Whatever we bring, they’re going to need. It’s going to go somewhere.” By the end of the day on Sunday, Sept. 3, Lovette posted a photo on CrossFit Winter Garden’s Facebook page that showed a large U-Haul truck filled with donations of all sorts. “I say it all the time, God has blessed me in this season of my life,” Lovette wrote on Facebook. “I’m so thankful to have come to such an amazing city with so much love.” The end tally was more than 200 cases of water and 200 bags of clothes, more than a ton of canned goods and food, 50 cases of diapers and numerous baby supplies and dog supplies. “We’ve just been really blessed, and obviously people want to help,” Lovette said.

ment for that area by the central park for additional spaces, and we got to negotiate a lease with the church for their two properties on Fifth (Avenue) and Forest (Street) where we would demo the houses and add additional parking there to help bridge that gap,” Smith said. The town plans to demolish two homes to aid in its goal and will be placing a landscape buffer along Forest Street. Smith said he expects the extra spaces will help visitors who frequent the popular town events, weekly farmers market and the surrounding businesses, and hopefully stop visitors from parking on the rightsof-way during such events.

“The only entrance and exit for that parking will be along Fifth Avenue and not on Forest (Street),” he said. “But we’ll make sure it’s nicely shaded, nicely landscaped, that it has passive parking and that it’s sensitive to the surrounding area that will be used by both the church and the town.” The whole project is estimated to cost about $20,000 to $40,000, Smith said, which includes lease rental fees, demolition, construction and landscaping. Smith expects the additional parking will become available early next year. Residents who live along Forest Street are invited to attend a town workshop on the issue in October.

New Beginnings reaches out in Winter Garden BY THE NUMBERS

Since opening a location in Winter Garden two years ago, New Beginnings has assisted hundreds in need. BRITTANY GAINES STAFF WRITER

It was the name — New Beginnings — that prompted Qwanishia Jackson to make the phone call. She and her 8-year-old son had been homeless for nearly two years and had been living out of her car for months. When she saw a pamphlet for New Beginnings, a homeless rehabilitation program based in Clermont, she knew it was the right place. “I was lost,” the Winter Garden resident said. “I had lost everything and was starting from scratch. I needed a fresh start — a new beginning.” New Beginnings was started a decade ago by Steve Smith after he saw a homeless person in need of assistance and didn’t know where to send him. “(Smith) just saw a problem and found a solution,” said Erik Segalini, director of community relations with New Beginnings. Now a decade later, the ministry has offices in Clermont, Kissim-

mee and, most recently, Winter Garden. “We started serving in Winter Garden because there were a lot of churches telling us they needed a homeless ministry where they could send people to,” Segalini said. “They were coming to us for help.” In the last two years, New Beginnings has opened a thrift store and started a social services office in the Winter Garden area. “The primary thing is that we’re trying to build a relationship and help them get resources,” Segalini said. One of the biggest contributing factors to homelessness is a lack of affordable housing in the region, Segalini said. “On average, you need to earn $22 an hour to be able to afford a two-bed apartment in Central Florida,” he said. To combat this problem, the organization broke ground earlier this summer on an affordable apartment complex, called Woodwinds Apartments. The complex will be located on a 10-acre site located on South Grand Highway in Clermont. The apartments are expected to be completed next spring. Through New Beginnings, those in need have access to food pantries, emergency groceries and hot meals, dental care, legal services and the rehabilitation program. The 14-week program is one of the core ministries of New Begin-

nings and requires participants to attend classes on Mondays through Fridays. “It’s everything from job skills to life skills to spiritual training,” Segalini said. “They write résumés, they do interview training, they do all kinds of different things.” In addition to taking classes, the participates are required to fulfill volunteer hours at the New Beginnings thrift stores. “It gives them a chance to work there in the afternoon for a few hours, and it gives us a chance to work with them,” Segalini said. “So when the time comes at the end of phase one to start looking for a job, we can give them an accurate job reference.” Since the program launched 10 years ago, New Beginnings has had

a 70% success rate of getting participants into employment. To operate the different ministries at New Beginnings, the organization relies heavily on volunteers. So far this year, more than 17,000 hours have been worked by volunteers at all New Beginnings locations. “It’s still unbelievable that there are people out there who care,” Jackson said. “They provide everything for you. I didn’t have support when I was by myself. Now I have that support.” Jackson is finishing the rehabilitation program and has plans to return to school, thanks to a scholarship, to get a degree. “They’re setting me up so it’ll be hard for me to fail,” she said. “We’ve been really blessed since we’ve been here.”

A 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at SoBo Gallery, 127 S. Boyd St., Winter Garden. The artwork in this month’s exhibition focuses on the details of the subject of life. More than 40 artists will be featured. The show runs though the end of the month. For more information, call (407) 347-7996.

t 17 years old, Ariel McMillan is a published author. She started writing her book, “Pathfinders Rebellion,” four years ago knowing that, one day, she wanted to see it published. “If I hadn’t had this summer, I wouldn’t have finished it,” said McMillan, a senior at Foundation Academy. “I spent all my time working on that book.” As a long-time fan of anime, McMillan said the original inspiration for her story came from watching the Japanese animation for many years. Her love of science fiction and dystopian novels, particularly those by her favorite author Amanda Hocking, also played a part in the development of her story. “Pathfinders Rebellion” is set in 2055 and follows the story of Quest Landing, a teenage girl who is determined to reveal to the world

the evils of a gaming corporation. When McMillan initially began writing, she knew it would be more than the short stories she had written before. “I just had a feeling that it would be a book,” she said. “This one was different. And when I started writing, it took on a life of its own.” As she developed the plot and characters, she realized she would need to figure out the ending — something she hadn’t envisioned when she started writing. “Toward the middle, I had to sit down and write down different scenarios,” she said. “Then I had to pick one.” The writing process alone took years, which McMillan attributes to her writing style. “I can’t do it in one fell swoop,” she said. “I have to come back to it. I have to take breaks. It’s a work in progress.” And by the time she completed her book, she realized the writing style within the book had changed. “At the beginning, it sounded like a 13-year-old was writing it, but by the end, I had matured more as a writer,” McMillan said.

‘PATHFINDERS REBELLION’ Ariel McMillan’s book can be purchased at bit. ly/2uGEPLI

After competing “Pathfinders Rebellion,” McMillan said that she spent most of her summer combing her book for mistakes. “I went through it three or four times before I hired a professional (editor),” she said. When the editor sent her book back to her, she said the pages were covered in red edit marks. “It was such a challenge,” McMillan said about the editing process. “I actually got sick of my own story. I couldn’t wait for it to be done, but it was all worth it in the end.” McMillan decided to self publish through Smashwords — an online platform for e-books. Already, a small handful of people have downloaded copies. “If I could meet every one of them, I would thank them so much,” McMillan said. If nothing else, McMillan said she just wants her readers to enjoy the journey. “I want them to feel good and feel the enjoyment I had when I wrote it,” she said. “I think I’ve done a good job, and I hope people like it.”

Ashley Moir has seen it too many times — 32, to be exact. The MetroWest resident spent seven years in the U.S. military, forming a close bond with many of her fellow Marines. Upon their return to civilian life, many had trouble with the transition, suffered from bouts of depression and, ultimately, chose to end their life. Now the public relations chairperson for the Hugh T. Gregory American Legion Post 63, in Winter Garden, Moir is also co-chairing with 1st Vice Commander Kurt Gies on the organization’s first Challenge 22 – 5K Silkies Ruck Walk. The benefactor is the nonprofit Project: VetRelief, and the purpose of the walk is to raise awareness of the fact that 22 veterans a day, on average, commit suicide. “This is a tragedy at epidemic proportions, and we want to help make it stop,” Gies said. “Here I am, I’m a veteran, and I didn’t even

know this statistic was out there.” His goal is to see more than 500 walkers take part in Saturday’s event and to raise $20,000. Gies served for 25 years with the U.S. Navy, and following his retirement, he looked for ways to continue serving his country. This led him to the American Legion. “PTSD is a greater killer of veterans than those killed in combat since 9-11,” he said. “We have found that the VA system does a good job fixing the broken bones, but they can’t touch the soul. That’s where this program comes into play.” Moir presented the idea of the walk to the Winter Garden legion, and she will lead the veterans on the hike. She will be wearing her ruck sack, which is decorated with 54 dog tags of associates and friends who have committed suicide. Of those, 32 were people she personally knew from her time in the military or through other veteran organizations. “PTSD is one of the most prevalent reasons (they commit suicide),” Moir said. “The guys get

THROWBACK THURSDAY SEPT. 15, 1983 If you were a little girl growing up in West Orange County in the 1970s and 1980s, chances are you took dance lessons from Ruth Wood in Ocoee. Wood turned part of her house into a dance studio and parents’ waiting room, where mothers became friends while their daughters learned to dance. For many years, she held her recitals at the old municipal auditorium on Lake Apopka in Winter Garden, later named Tanner Hall.

“When you think karaoke, you think you’re singing along to a recording, but what makes this unique is that you’re singing with a live band and backup singers,” Bruhn said. “It’s not your m o t h e r ’s karaoke. There’s a heck of a lot of talent on that stage. They can make you look pretty good.” This year, Bruhn will be competing with Windermere Town Council members Allen Pichon and Bob McKinley. been sightings and whispers of teams preparing for the West Orange Chamber of Commerce’s annual Karaoke Clash. Video footage of Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn singing a “Phantom of the Opera” tune into a shower head was shared to Facebook last week. The town of Oakland has recruited both Oakland Preserve’s Managing Director Jennifer Hunt, a known music aficionado, and Orange County Commissioner Betsy VanderLey to bolster its team. While teams are keeping their musical selections under wraps for now, there is chatter that the competition from all parties will be fierce. This year’s annual Karaoke Clash After Hours will be held on Thursday, Sept. 14, at Citywalk’s Rising Star at Universal Orlando Resort. In past years, the competition has been based on individual performances, but this year, the chamber decided competitors will compete in teams. So far, the list of teams includes the city of Ocoee, the city of Winter Garden, the town of Oakland, the town of Windermere, Orange County Public School board members and Orange County Commission members. There also may be a few local police officers and firefighters mixed into the teams, according to the chamber. Having won two out of the last three competitions, Bruhn said winning the competition is always a challenge because the decision lies with the audience. “You never know what it is that’s going to strike their fancy,” he said. “One time it might have been talent, another time it might have been the humor and being willing to don makeup and a wig. It’s all up to what the audience gets a kick out of.” Singing at Rising Star is anything but a typical karaoke experience.

n many ways, Emanuel Vazquez is like any other student who is new to a school. Since moving to the area from Puerto Rico in June, he is learning the layout of Dr. Phillips High, making friends and working hard at his studies. Of course, there is one notable difference between Vazquez and many of his new classmates: Vazquez is also training to compete as a diver for Puerto Rico in the 2017 Junior Pan American Championships later this month in Canada. It is actually a big part of the reason he moved to the Dr. Phillips area from his native Puerto Rico. Now, he is training with YCF Diving coach Mark Ruiz, a former U.S. Olympian in 2000 and 2004, out of the YMCA Aquatic Center. Ruiz said this opportunity will provide Vazquez his biggest stage yet in the sport and will give the up-and-comer a chance to show what he can do. “It’s a huge deal for him to get that international experience and SEE PROUD PAGE 14

Weeks later, Lakers complete entire game Cancellations meant Windermere Prep’s football team had been itching to get a game in — something a weather delay Sept. 1 again called into question. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

When the whistle blew and play stopped, and it wasn’t for a penalty or a water break, Jacob Doss feared correctly it had happened again — the Windermere Prep football team was in a weather delay and in jeopardy of not playing for a third straight week. “The kids all just hung their heads,” Doss said. “We went back into the locker room, and you could just see it in their eyes — they were ready to go. Our coaches were hurting, too.”

Windermere Prep’s Ismael Cortes scores an easy touchdown after picking up a fumble during the Lakers’ win over Harvest Community Sept. 1.

The Lakers were up 13-0 against Jacksonville’s Harvest Community School in the first quarter Sept. 1 when play was halted and officials cleared the field and stands. It was a similar situation to Windermere Prep’s Kickoff Classic against Trinity Prep when, after three plays from scrimmage, a storm rolled through and — because the Lakers’ home field does not have lights — the game eventually was canceled. Then, Windermere Prep’s Week One game at St. Stephen’s was also canceled. SEE START PAGE 14

Dexter Williams, a West Orange High alum who also attended Olympia, had a big game for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the team’s 49-16 win over Temple to open the season. Williams was one of three Notre Dame players to rush for more than 100 yards, finishing the game with 124 yards on six carries and a touchdown.

4

The Dr. Phillips volleyball team won a pair of games last week against Edgewater and Evans to improve to 3-0, joining West Orange as an undefeated volleyball team from the Observer Preps coverage area. Through three victories, the Panthers have yet to lose a set.

The Olympia volleyball team won two of three matches last week, beating Windermere and Wekiva, and is 3-2 on the season.

Cassidy Chambers After losing its first two games of the season - one of which went to a close match of five sets - the Windermere High School girls volleyball team won its first game of the season against Ocoee High. According to coach Layla West, freshman Cassidy Chambers is already proving herself to be a valuable asset to this newlyformed team.

How has it been helping create a new volleyball program at Windermere High? In the beginning it was a little chaotic because we were all new and trying to mesh together. It wasn’t until after our second game, that we really clicked. What is one strength that you bring to the team? My defense. I like defense. It’s a lot more movement. You never know what to expect so you have to be on your toes.

THE BASICS

Not having played a full quarter, much less an entire game, when most other teams had played two games had myriad implications — and not just on Doss’s team but also for opponents. “You’re almost embarrassed, because you’re giving teams film from your spring game because we don’t have any film,” Doss said. One last kicker was that, to that point, the defense had played just two plays from scrimmage. The three plays against Trinity Prep had come on offense and against Harvest the Lakers had forced two turnovers on two plays. The rest had come on offense. “It’s unbelievable that (another delay) happened at that time because it had been the first time our defense was on the field,” Doss said. “Our defense was just itching to play.” However, although a second wave of storms terrorized teams playing games that started at 7 p.m. Sept. 1, the Lakers were able to get back out on the field against Harvest Community. The two teams agreed to a running clock to make sure that the game was completed in its entirety, and Windermere Prep

You also play beach volleyball, so how does that compare to indoor volleyball? In beach, you get a lot of touches, and it’s a lot of selfcorrection. You learn from your mistakes. I feel that I learn more when I’m analyzing what I did wrong. Are there any skills you hope to improve on during this year’s season at Windermere High? I just want to contribute to the game and improve my hitting for beach.

As an outside hitter, how does it feel to get a great kill? Accomplished and excited because I did something great for my team. We had created a good pass and from that a good set that I was able to put away for a point for my team.

exposure,” Ruiz said. “We have a plan for him for the next three years for (the) 2020 (Olympics).” Vazquez, 17, said he first was drawn to the sport when he was just 6 and his mother was working at a pool in Puerto Rico. “I got really interested in doing all the flips and all the stuff,” he said. He got going in diving, as well as synchronized swimming, and said he does it for the fleeting moments when he is in the air, waiting to hit the water. “It’s only like three seconds, but in the air you feel all of the adrenaline,” Vazquez said. “After a good dive, when you come out of the water, everybody is screaming that you did a good job.” Ruiz met Vazquez in the summer of 2016, and the two hit it off instantly. The former Olympian and veteran coach said he quickly recognized potential in Vazquez. “What he does more than

Emanuel Vazquez is also competing for his new high school as a senior on the Panthers swimming and diving team. His first taste of varsity competition came August 30 in a meet against Osceola. Vazquez won the diving competition and Dr. Phillips topped Osceola 222-77.

Ruiz said Vazquez will be honing his dives that he already has learned and works on consistency. After this competition, though, the two will be working to add more to his capabilities as he readies for more international competitions and a shot to be an Olympian himself. For now, though, the local teen is focused on the task at hand. “I’m hoping to bring a medal to YCF and also to my beautiful island of Puerto Rico,” Vazquez said.

Ruiz also went to Dr. Phillips High and is also Puerto Rican. “He’s like a father figure — I see him like a stepdad,” Vazquez said. “I think it’s pretty cool — I’m almost following in his steps.” For Ruiz, seeing Vazquez attend and compete for his alma mater — Vazquez is also on the Panthers’ swimming and diving team this fall — is a unique experience. “It’s really neat for me to see him go to my former school,” Ruiz said. “To see him go to that school and hear his stories about his daily interactions at school, it’s a lot of fun.” In the days leading up to the Junior Pan American Championships, which begin Sept. 28,

Downtown living DANIELLE HENDRIX STAFF WRITER

I

f you’ve ever wanted to live in the heart of downtown Winter Garden, the newest

opportunity to do so is about to break ground. Park Place Winter Garden is a new community of luxury townhouses that will be nestled near the southeast corner of Plant Street and Park Avenue. With 32 units and seven different models — ranging in size from 1,800 to 2,500 square feet — homebuyers have a wealth of customizations and floor plans from which to choose.

Sixteen homes will be threestory townhouses, 12 will be two stories, and the remaining units are two stories with lofts. Additionally, six of these units can be converted into 3,000-squarefoot units, lead developer Franco Scala said. “It’s a neat project, with all the amenities that we have, based on the location,” said Scala, builder/ owner at F&J Developers. “We (myself and business partner Jim Heistand) feel that the location is a Class A location. It allows people to live and work there and to enjoy the downtown historic district of Winter Garden. We do have certain units on Plant Street, and seven units there will be used as professional office space.” The townhouses come with a variety of choices and customization packages, upgrades and more. Scala added that most of the units have elevators and dumbwaiters to assist in bringing groceries upstairs. “There’s a variety of upgrades if they choose to look at them, or we can apply a different look to the unit,” Scala said. “We’re willing to change a few things upon request from the buyer. The key features are the elevators and dumbwaiters.” Each home has three beds and three-and-one-half baths, with options to use the first floor as an office instead of a bedroom. Eight units are designed to have a bedroom on the first floor, with a built-in office space.

Although it is a modern community, Park Place Winter Garden is also designed to fit into the historical charm of downtown Winter Garden. Buildings facing the road are adorned with classic red brickwork, with some units also boasting canopy-shaded porches in the style of balconies. Landscaping is simple and borders the community on all sides, while a decorative fountain faces outward on the east side of the property. All homes also include a two-car garage. “The unique thing is that it’s in the historical district of Winter Garden, and we have designed the project to go in with what Winter Garden already has in place, as a historical place,” Scala said of the design. “The project’s been designed to accommodate that look as well.” F&J Developers are set to break ground on the $10.5 million project Thursday, Sept. 14. And although the official groundbreaking is coming up, Scala said

work is already underway at the “The unique thing location for site preparation. They hope to go vertical within the next is that it’s in the 60 days, with a ballpark completion date of the third quarter of historical district of 2019. Prices start in the mid- Winter Garden and $400,000s as a baseline, before additional options, upgrades and we have designed other modifications are added. “I’m a local, I live in Winder- the project to go in mere and have frequented Winter Garden for the last 15 years,” with what Winter Scala said. “I always had a passion to someday to build a community Garden already has here in Winter Garden, and the timing and opportunity for us in place, as a histo look at this available land just came up. We decided that it was torical place.” the right time, and a perfect location for us to look at building in — Franco Scala, Winter Garden. lead developer “I feel strongly that the comat F&J Developers munity is going to enhance the 720 Celebration A quaint landscape of downtown Winter Garden,” Scala said. “It Celebration fits well within downtown 720 the Celebration Avenue, Suite 100, Facebook.com/Cen FL 34747 that they have goingCelebration on.” Multi-Lingual Offices Offices in Celebration, Windermere and Davenport
