Although the city supports the idea of honoring the memory of those killed in the 1920 Ocoee Riots with two markers, the proposed language has sparked disagreement. GABBY BAQUERO NEWS EDITOR

Ocoee currently is considering a project proposed to erect two markers dedicated to AfricanAmericans who were lynched for trying to vote in November 1920. The event — referred to in historical literature as both the Ocoee Election Day Massacre of 1920 and the Ocoee Riots — resulted in the

brutal murders of at least six African-Americans by the Ku Klux Klan, and the entire black population left Ocoee. However, because accounts of what occurred vary widely, many argue the number of those killed during the dates of Nov. 2 to 3 in 1920 might be significantly higher — as many as 60. SEE A PART PAGE 4

Power bills to increase in 2018 With or without a pending settlement that allows Duke Energy to invest in smart meters and solar, Florida’s energy costs are below the national average.

n Thursday, Aug. 31, the anticipation for Hamlin residents was finally over, as their very own neighborhood Publix supermarket officially opened its doors. Publix at Hamlin Cove is the second commercial development in the community,

— Harry Sideris, president of Duke Energy Florida

Residents currently pay $118.41 per 1,000 kWh. If the settlement is not approved, the January 2018 residential bill would be $128.54 per 1,000 kWh, according to Gibbs. If the agreement is approved, the bill would rise a smaller percentage, to $123.90 per 1,000, she said. The national average is $132.20 per 1,000, Gibbs said. “Through cost management and careful planning, Duke Energy Florida has made thoughtful investments to significantly enhance service reliability and reduce emissions for our customers,” Harry Sideris, president of Duke Energy Florida, said in the release. Duke Energy Florida provides about 8,800 megawatts of owned electric capacity to approximately 1.8 million customers in a 13,000-squaremile service area.

AMY QUESINBERRY ORANGE COUNTY Duke Energy Florida has submitted its annual request to set 2018 electric rates with the Florida Public Service Commission, and there could be an 8.5% increase — to $128.54 per 1,000 kilowatts per hour. A Duke release based the increase on fuel costs, capacity, energy conservation and environmental costs. However, last month, Duke Energy filed a settlement agreement that could alter that increase. A decision should be made by December. “This settlement agreement will include investments of nearly $6 billion over the next four years while minimizing the impact on customer bills,” said Ana Gibbs, Duke Energy’s senior communications consultant. “The settlement agreement includes investments in solar energy, smart meters, grid modernization projects to enhance reliability, (which) make the grid more resilient and secure, and optional billing programs to enhance customer choices. The agreement also includes plans to install electric vehicle charging stations and a battery storage pilot program.”

Upon their return to civilian life, many had trouble with the transition, suffered from bouts of depression and, ultimately, chose to end their life. Now the public relations chairperson for the Hugh T. The benefactor is the nonprofit Project: VetRelief, and the purpose of the walk is to raise awareness of the fact that 22 veterans a day, on average, commit suicide. “This is a tragedy at epidemic proportions, and we want to help make it stop,” Gies said. “Here I am, I’m a veteran, and I didn’t even know this statistic was out there.” His goal is to see more than 500 walkers take part in Saturday’s event and to raise $20,000. the U.S. Navy, and following his retirement, he looked for ways to continue serving his country. This led him to the American Legion. “PTSD is a greater killer of veterans than those killed in combat since 9-11,” he said. “We have found that the VA system does a good job fixing the broken bones, but they can’t touch the soul. That’s where this program comes into play.” Moir presented the idea of the walk to the Winter Garden legion, and she will lead the veterans on the hike. She will be wearing her ruck sack, which is decorated with 54 dog tags of associates and friends who have committed suicide. Of those, 32 were people she personally knew from her time in the military or through other veteran organizations. “PTSD is one of the most prevalent reasons (they commit suicide),” Moir said. “The guys get out, and they lose their purpose and don’t know what to do. Your family doesn’t really relate to you anymore. You can’t go to them with things anymore. “The biggest part of it is bringing veterans together so they have a support line … so if there’s ever a time they need to talk to someone,” she said.

PROJECT: VETRELIEF This nonprofit organization is an initiative supported by the American Legion, Department of Florida, and focuses on ensuring that service men and women have the support they need when transitioning back to civilian life. All services are provided free to veterans. There are three main areas of service: emergency assistance, benefits support and community engagement. By creating a community of veterans helping veterans, Project: VetRelief aims to eliminate isolation upon their return home. Statistics reveal an average of 22 veterans a day commit suicide; that’s 8,030 each year. According to Project: VetRelief, major depression among military men and women is five times higher than civilians, and service members during a third or fourth tour are more than twice as likely as those on their first tour to meet screening criteria for acute stress, depression or anxiety. The local office is at 1012A Lee Road, Orlando. A free 24-hour confidential support line is available at (800) 273-8255, press 1; or text 838255.

CrossFit Winter Garden owner Lee Lovette, his CrossFit family and Hope Church Winter Garden teamed up with the community to collect various donations that are being delivered to Hurricane Harvey victims.

let it go without doing something to help. After all, it’s in the former police officer’s blood. Lovette started his gym nearly a year ago but previously worked as a police officer in Key West for nearly 15 years. When he started CrossFit, he knew he could continue to help people —but in a different way. Now, he and his CrossFit family — along with members of Hope Church Winter Garden and the community — recently sent off a U-Haul truck filled with supplies to Texas. “Being in Key West, we had Hurricane Wilma, we had Andrew, and my father was in Louisiana during Katrina and lost everything,” Lovette said. “Hurricanes hit home and as soon as we saw it happening in Houston, I knew it was going to be bad. People go through their day-today lives because it’s not affecting them, but they don’t think, ‘What if that was us?’ I would hope that a mom somewhere in Texas would say, ‘Hey, let’s try to get stuff over

there’ if that was us.” Lovette got in touch with Hope Church Pastor Wesley Beacham and suggested using CrossFit Winter Garden as a donation hub. From there, they took to social media, posting in the various Winter Garden-related Facebook pages and spreading the word throughout the community. “I went on all of the Winter Garden Facebook pages and said, ‘Listen, I know this isn’t yardsale approved but people need help, and if we can help, great. Whatever you can bring, bring it, and whatever it costs us to get it there, we’re going to get it there and help people,’” Lovette said. In the first two days of collecting donations, Lovette’s gym became storage for 170 cases of water, 12 cases of diapers, 25 bags of clothes and other items ranging from shoes and canned goods to pet food. “People have been coming all day wanting to donate stuff — boxes of shoes, you name it,” he said. “People were like, ‘What do we bring?’ and I said, ‘Honestly,

bring everything. People have lost everything.’ It’s not like they just need water or toilet paper, they lost everything. They lost their whole homes, all their clothes. We’ve had people drop off can openers, paper plates and dog food. Whatever we bring, they’re going to need. It’s going to go somewhere.” By the end of the day on Sunday, Sept. 3, Lovette posted a photo on CrossFit Winter Garden’s Facebook page that showed a large U-Haul truck filled with donations of all sorts. “I say it all the time, God has blessed me in this season of my life,” Lovette wrote on Facebook. “I’m so thankful to have come to such an amazing city with so much love.” The end tally was more than 200 cases of water and 200 bags of clothes, more than a ton of canned goods and food, 50 cases of diapers and numerous baby supplies and dog supplies. “We’ve just been really blessed, and obviously people want to help,” Lovette said.

A part of Ocoee’s history Among those who consider six to be an extremely conservative number is the Equal Justice Institute — a nonprofit organization based in Montgomery, Alabama, that makes it its mission to challenges racial injustice. “In Ocoee, the research shows — and we’ve done a lot of research — that the lowest number of killings was six and the highest number we have heard is 60,” said Dr. Kristin Congdon, founder of EJI’s Orange County Task Force. “Almost everybody estimates it on the higher end of the scale, but it’s hard to know specifically. EJI has said it’s 32 deaths, which is, from what I’ve read, a conservative estimate.” For the past 10 years, EJI has been working with Ocoee’s Human Relations Diversity Board to install two markers memorializing those killed in 1920. During the Aug. 15 Ocoee City Commission meeting, city leaders authorized the first of the two markers. The first marker is to be installed at a site the city dedicated as Hallowed Ground in November 2007, which was initially believed

to be an African-American cemetery. The second marker, which EJI asked to have located in a more visible spot near Starke Lake, was tabled by the city commissioners because of the upcoming construction planned downtown. Congdon said she hoped to have the first marker erected by November. But Congdon doubts it will happen because of disagreements regarding the wording on the marker — specifically, the estimated number of those killed. “The text is what we’re trying to negotiate now,” Congdon said. “There have been a lot of rewritings of the text and the mayor and city commissioners have asked to do their own research on the number. EJI wants it to say a number over 30, but they said they don’t believe that many people were killed.” During the meeting, the city commissioners said the city would do its own research to verify how many died during the riots. The city has been provided a lengthy bibliography citing informational sources and scholarly

Various other West Orangearea organizations, churches and groups have banded together to start their own relief efforts. While many collected and delivered donations last weekend, here are some ongoing relief efforts:

articles by EJI. According to Congdon’s research, there were 33 lynchings in Orange County, 32 of which were connected to the Ocoee massacre. One of those individuals, July Perry, was hung from a telephone pole in Orlando. Perry’s gravesite is located in the Greenwood Cemetery in Orlando. But according to 22-year Ocoee resident William Maxwell, who has served on the diversity board for 10 years, that number is inaccurate. “They wanted to say that 32 people were lynched in Ocoee, but there is nothing in my 10 years of research on this event that clearly documents or identifies that number,” Maxwell said. “And you know, the city’s position right now is that we want to take every positive measure we can to support this project because it would be a closure to a very dark chapter in the history of our city. And I think that’s the only way that we can move on.” Maxwell also emphasized that Ocoee was not incorporated at the time of the massacre, which he

Jessica Eng, jeng@OrangeObserver.com

believes should be reflected. “The problem is that the Ocoee massacre — and I use that term very loosely — occurred in 1920, and Ocoee was not yet a municipality under the state of Florida,” he said. “Of course, that doesn’t detract from what happened, but I think we need to put that all in perspective, historically, in order to tell the story, honor the memory, heal the wounds and put forward a factual narrative.” In addition to the markers, EJI has asked for soil from the lynching sites in Ocoee to be preserved in jars and exhibited in the upcoming From Slavery to Mass Incarceration museum in Alabama set to open in 2018. However, the city has expressed reservations after learning the exhibit would also state that 32 estimated lynchings occurred in Ocoee. “I’m not against what we’re trying to do … but there’s nowhere that shows 32 people (were killed) in this city,” Mayor Rusty Johnson said. “We know what happened here 99 years ago … and we have no problem recognizing that, but it’s got to be the truth.”

Fresh forward The Subway on Dillard Street is one of four in Central Florida to feature a new design and also boasts a drive-thru. DANIELLE HENDRIX STAFF WRITER WINTER GARDEN What used to be

a drive-thru credit union on Dillard Street is now one of the first drive-thru Subway locations in Central Florida. For the last nine months, Jean Legere and his family — all local Subway franchisees — have gone through the process of renovating the credit union to house their new location. Previously, the restaurant was located just across the same shopping center, Tri-City Plaza. Now, Legere said, it is the fourth location in Central Florida to debut Subway’s new Fresh Forward design. The new design, he said, is part of a brand effort to reinvent and revitalize. “Subway has been around for 50-plus years, and in order for the brand to survive as a whole, we have to think forward to the next 50,” he said. “Part of that is the revitalization of the brand itself in terms of décor, training of sandwich artists, finding different ways to engage our guests and really looking forward on what we’ve been able to accomplish.” Legere and his family opened their first Subway location in 1988 in Ocoee. The Winter Garden

restaurant was their second and opened in 1992. Legere remembers making his first sandwich at just 9 years old. “My grandfather was cutting hair for Subway’s co-founder in Connecticut,” he said. “Peter Buck asked my grandfather if he wanted to open some restaurants in Orlando or San Diego. We were one of the first franchisees in the southeast to open up. From there, my grandparents had six kids, they all got in the business, and all their kids got in the business. My mother is second-generation franchisee, and my brothers and I are third-generation franchisees.” When it was time to renovate, the choice to move to a location that already had a drive-thru was an opportunity they couldn’t resist. Additionally, only one of every five Subway shops in the United States will feature the Fresh Forward design. “This is our best store,” Legere said. “It’s one of our oldest, bestrunning stores. We figured that adding the drive-thru and almost tripling the space (was well worth it). It’s been one of the longest build-outs we’ve ever experienced.” Legere’s previous restaurant, he said, encompassed about 970 square feet. This one is just under 2,200 square feet, with the drivethru included. Features unique to the new design include self-ordering kiosks, touchscreen beverage machines with flavor-customization capability, a digital menu

he seed was planted two years ago. Brandon and Jennifer Minnick felt God’s call to leave their comfortable life and enter the mission field to lead a life of serving others. At the time, they weren’t sure exactly what that meant or where they would go — but the urge became stronger the more they thought and prayed about it. This week, the Winter Garden family is flying south to start mission work at seven pregnancy centers in and around San Jose, Costa Rica. Brandon worked his last shift as a firefighter/paramedic last Thursday. The Minnicks have sold most of the contents in the home they rented, as well as their two vehicles and their golf cart. They packed the essentials and everyone’s clothing and gave their four children — Kayden, 9, Alaina, 8, Ellie, 5, and Brantlee, 3 — one container each to pack their toys and sentimental items. The Minnicks, officially missionaries with Beautiful Feet International, are ready for this adventure after months of preparation. They said their children are hesitant about leaving family and friends and the only life they’ve ever known, but they are excited about the idea of moving to a new country, making new friends and sharing their love of God with others their age. THE MISSIONARY JOURNEY

The Minnicks felt the urge to enter the mission field — although they didn’t know if it was going to be local or foreign — and were expecting a clear-cut answer

and sign from God of where they should serve. Not getting that, they took a missionary interview tour, asking others how they knew where to go. The answer was the same: “You’ll just know. God will make it clear. Just follow the open doors.” Jennifer said the doors to Costa Rica kept opening easily. “In May 2016, we were introduced to Centro Prenatal and heard they were looking for new directors to take over, since the current ones were heading back to the States,” Jennifer said. “We fell in love with the ministry from the moment we walked through the first center. We finally knew this was the place for us.” The couple started a blog, Reckless Faith, that chronicled their journey, which included questions, fears and hesitation but also Biblical quotes and answered prayers. Brandon and Jennifer took the older two girls on a vision trip to see how they would react to such a different life so far from Winter Garden. They loved the place. “I just felt like that was God speaking through them, telling me everything was going to be OK,” Jennifer said. “Hard, but OK.” A year ago, they began selling their “stuff,” starting with the family golf cart and moving on from there. In their blog, they called it “the great purge.” “At first, it was totally freaking us out, but eventually, it actually became freeing,” Jennifer said. “It was a big job to move out and sell (or) donate almost every possession we own. It was overwhelming and stressful, but once it was done, we felt so great.”

CENTRO PRENATAL

The Minnicks first visited Centro Prenatal in May 2016 and knew that was where they were supposed to be. “It lined up with our beliefs of not only sharing the gospel, but also family preservation,” Brandon said. “We just love how the centers were formed to bring the women hope that is found through the person and work of Jesus Christ, education and empowerment when it comes to being a mother and also helping them with their physical needs. Once we saw firsthand the lives this ministry was impacting, we knew God had invited us into this opportunity, and we wanted in.” There are three centers in the San Jose area; one in Grecia, about an hour away; two in Tarcoles and Jaco, about 90 minutes away; and the Upala center near Nicaragua,

about four hours away from San Jose. Brandon and Jennifer will serve as the country directors of Centro Prenatal Costa Rica, taking more of an administrative role, making sure each center has the materials needed for the daily ministry work — both Biblical and prenatal in nature. Each center is run by volunteers, from the counselors to the secretaries. The Minnick children will be part of the ministry, too. When the mothers arrive for counseling or assistance, they often take their children with them, Jennifer said, so her four can help entertain them. “Our youngest says almost daily that he’s going to move to Costa Rica to help mommies and babies,” Jennifer said. “To see them excited about loving and serving others gives us tremen-

dous peace. When we really think about it, we know we are opening them up to a whole new culture and language and helping them as children grow up with a serving/ mission mind.” There are other opportunities in the area for family ministry, as well, such as feeding the homeless weekly and taking part in a kids club on Saturdays. The Minnick children will be home-schooled so Jennifer and Brandon can be flexible with their schedule and take them with them when they visit the centers farther out. Big changes are coming this week for the family, as the six make their leap into mission life. They have at times been overwhelmed, worried and hesitant. But Brandon keeps going back to this Francis Chan quote: “God doesn’t call us to be comfortable. He calls us to trust Him so completely that we are unafraid to put ourselves in situations where we will be in trouble if He doesn’t come through.” “This quote by Francis Chan was such an eye-opening statement for me,” Brandon said. “It carries the weight of Acts 4:29 and has become my cry for boldness. I want to step out of my comforts and rely completely on the grace of God to come through for me and my family. While I would love for that grace to be shown to us by the gift of security, ultimately I want God to be glorified through my life and our family. I want my kids to look at my life and see clearly that the glory of God was my supreme value and that I walked boldly towards that end with every step of my life with a heart of joy.”

Ocoee PD increases patrol of Starke Lake

Residents may notice more police presence on Starke Lake and Lake Primavista this summer. Despite having had a marine patrol unit for a number of years, until now, the Ocoee Police Department dedicated patrol officers to the lake on limited occasions, such as holidays and weekends they expected residents to engage in more recreational activities. However, with the increase in population, more frequent use of Starke Lake and coming revitalization of downtown Ocoee, the department decided to dedicate more officers to its marine patrol unit and have officers patrol the lakes seven days a week during daytime hours. “The marine patrol unit is something we’ve had for years,”

said Ocoee Police Deputy Chief Steve McCosker. “However, we kind of amped it up because as the population grows, so does the use of the lake. And also, with the affordability of personal watercraft such as jet skis, we really felt it was important to have someone out there to ensure safety. So it’s not new but this is the first summer that we’ve committed as much staff as we have to the unit.” The unit, which now comprises four officers who are specially trained on vessel operations and maritime law, is meant to enforce safety regulations, ensure residents respect the no-wake zone between Starke Lake and Lake Primavista and abide by the age restrictions on operating watercraft. “They’re doing a large assortment of things,” McCosker said. “Everything from boater education, where they go ahead and speak to boaters about safety, to boater checks, where they make sure that the vessels have the proper safety equipment — because they’re required to have life jackets, a fire extinguisher and audible devices — to make sure they have those type of things.”

t 17 years old, Ariel McMillan is a published author. She started writing her book, “Pathfinders Rebellion,” four years ago knowing that, one day, she wanted to see it published. “If I hadn’t had this summer, I wouldn’t have finished it,” said McMillan, a senior at Foundation Academy. “I spent all my time working on that book.” As a long-time fan of anime, McMillan said the original inspiration for her story came from watching the Japanese animation for many years. Her love of science fiction and dystopian novels, particularly those by her favorite author Amanda Hocking, also played a part in the development of her story. “Pathfinders Rebellion” is set in 2055 and follows the story of Quest Landing, a teenage girl who is determined to reveal to the world

the evils of a gaming corporation. When McMillan initially began writing, she knew it would be more than the short stories she had written before. “I just had a feeling that it would be a book,” she said. “This one was different. And when I started writing, it took on a life of its own.” As she developed the plot and characters, she realized she would need to figure out the ending — something she hadn’t envisioned when she started writing. “Toward the middle, I had to sit down and write down different scenarios,” she said. “Then I had to pick one.” The writing process alone took years, which McMillan attributes to her writing style. “I can’t do it in one fell swoop,” she said. “I have to come back to it. I have to take breaks. It’s a work in progress.” And by the time she completed her book, she realized the writing style within the book had changed. “At the beginning, it sounded like a 13-year-old was writing it, but by the end, I had matured more as a writer,” McMillan said.

‘PATHFINDERS REBELLION’ Ariel McMillan’s book can be purchased at bit. ly/2uGEPLI

After competing “Pathfinders Rebellion,” McMillan said that she spent most of her summer combing her book for mistakes. “I went through it three or four times before I hired a professional (editor),” she said. When the editor sent her book back to her, she said the pages were covered in red edit marks. “It was such a challenge,” McMillan said about the editing process. “I actually got sick of my own story. I couldn’t wait for it to be done, but it was all worth it in the end.” McMillan decided to self publish through Smashwords — an online platform for e-books. Already, a small handful of people have downloaded copies. “If I could meet every one of them, I would thank them so much,” McMillan said. If nothing else, McMillan said she just wants her readers to enjoy the journey. “I want them to feel good and feel the enjoyment I had when I wrote it,” she said. “I think I’ve done a good job, and I hope people like it.”

Ocoee Lions Club needs new home The 69-year-old organization currently meets in a century-old former train depot and is raising funds for a new building with better opportunities. COMMUNITY EDITOR

SERVING THE COMMUNITY

It’s easy to spot the members of the Ocoee Lions Club at community events because they always don their familiar yellow vests when helping others. The club founded Ocoee Founders’ Day and managed it for years, until the event grew too big for the Lions to handle. The club still coordinates the Ocoee Christmas Parade, turkey shoots and an annual golf tournament. This year, a haunted house is planned. With a new facility, Van Varick said, the club can get even more involved in the community. PROVIDING PROPER VISION

One of the most important programs run by the Lions is the national Project Right-To-Sight.

Steven Van Varick is passionate about Project Right to Sight, in which the Lions Club provides eye exams and glasses for people in need.

The Ocoee Lions Club oversees hundreds of thousands of pairs of glasses annually, and they are stored in the Ocoee warehouse to be distributed locally and globally. Area groups heading out on mission trips routinely take glasses with them. The Community Eye Clinic is open monthly in Orlando but will relocate to Ocoee once the new facility is funded and built. Until then, the current warehouse is packed with glasses. As they are donated, volunteers sort them and ship them to a designated prison, where inmates clean the eyewear and read the prescription. The glasses are then tagged and stored in boxes, waiting to go to someone in need. Once people in need have made contact with a local Lions club and

have been evaluated, they can go to the clinic in Orlando to get an eye exam. Volunteers in Ocoee are ready to help locate the correct pair of glasses, and a courier drives them out to the clinic. Van Varick said volunteers are always needed in the warehouse on these days, and he said anyone from high-schoolers needing volunteer hours to senior citizens looking to help in the community can help. Interested folks can also become members of the club if they are inclined to give back to the community. The Lions meet at 6:30 p.m. Mondays, with dinner served on the second and fourth weeks. For more information, contact Van Varick at stevenvv64@gmail.com.

Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. CRITTER CORNER

The Ocoee Lions Club has a vision to bring its meeting hall and Project Right To Sight program together in a new building, one that has ample space for the catalog of eyeglasses, space to hold meetings and a small hall that can be rented out as a fundraiser. But it needs funds to make that a reality. The 69-year-old Ocoee service organization has been meeting in a 102-year-old former train depot on Taylor Street, and while upgrades have been made through the years, it has been deemed too costly to modernize and too old to properly insure. Members say it’s time for a fresh start in a new facility. Lion Steven Van Varick said the club envisions a 5,200-squarefoot building on the same grounds owned by the club, behind the current clubhouse. The facility would have the Project Right-ToSight eye clinic in the front to help even more people, a rental hall for parties and receptions in the center and the club’s assembly hall in

the back. There would be a kitchen and office, as well. “It will also provide a venue for the Ocoee Lions Club to hold meetings and host pancake breakfasts, fish fries and other community-based fundraising events,” Van Varick said.

Jaime and John Baylor, owners of Winter Garden Food Tours, take guests on a culinary trip down Plant Street. BRITTANY GAINES STAFF WRITER

Ever since their first date together at Chef’s Table At the Edgewater, John and Jamie Baylor have been intrigued by the food scene in Winter Garden. “We came came down here to have dinner, and we were blown away with what we saw,” John said. That date sparked a mutual passion for both Winter Garden and its many restaurants — so much so that the couple decided to start a food-tour business featuring nearly every restaurant in the downtown strip. “This place was tailor-made for it,” John said. The journey to starting a food tour business was triggered after Jamie purchased her husband a monthly excursion package for Christmas last year. Included in the package were several food tours in the Central Florida region, which became the inspiration for their own business in Winter Garden. “We realized we could do this at home, and we could do it better,” Jamie said. But the planning process was a long one that involved dozens of trips to restaurants in Winter Garden. “We ate, and we ate, and we ate, and we ate,” Jamie said. “Every Thursday was date night.” Their goal was to identify unique food items to feature on the tour that would be costfriendly and sharable among several people. Throughout the planning process, the couple also began building relationships with every restaurant in town and told owners of their intention to start a food tour. The reception to the idea was nothing but positive. After weeks of planning and working with restaurants, the couple sought and received permitting from the city. From there, they organized the tour — a dinner tour and a lunch tour each featuring their favorite and unique food choices from each restaurant. “Everything on the tour is very

good because we’ve done our homework,” John said. Each tour lasts about two hours, with between five and seven different stops along the way. “Our tours are two hours, but they tend to go an extra hour because people want to stick around after,” Jamie said. With this in mind, each tour ends at either Axum, Plant Street Market or Pilars Martini, and almost no one goes home hungry. “It is meant to fill you by the end of the tour,” John said. So far, the couple has only been officially open for business for a month, but the Baylors already have mastered the art of giving a tour around Winter Garden. Each tour starts at the fountain in the middle of Plant Street. While John provides the commentary, Jamie goes ahead of the group to prepare each restaurant before they arrive. “We really believe the way we set up our tour is better than most,” John said. As they were creating their business, the couple decided to keep their groups small — about six people maximum. Not only did this make it easier for restaurants to seat and serve them, but also they found that smaller groups meant that the participants were more likely to make new friends and enjoy themselves. They also wanted to blend into the smalltown vibe of Winter Garden. “It’s still very much a hometown community,” John said.

“Everybody knows everybody.” In addition to eating a variety of foods, chefs at several restaurants talk with the group about the food that they’re eating and what makes it different from other restaurants. “If (food) is ordinary, it’s not on our tour,” John said. In addition to food samplings, the tours make stops at some of the dessert and snack shops around town, including Ms. Bee’s Gourmet Popcorn and Kaebisch Chocolate. And whenever a restaurant has approached the couple about being included on the tour, John and Jamie always say yes. “We don’t want to exclude anyone,” Jamie said. “If they want to be part of the tour, we’ll add them.” As a result, the couple has added a third tour on Saturday afternoons and currently is working on creating a dessert tour and an art-themed tour. Although their focus is the food, the couple also highlights Winter Garden itself during each tour, sharing the history of the city with each group. They even include historic stops along the way, such as the Heritage Museum and the Edgewater Hotel. During John’s commentary as the group strolls through the streets of downtown, he often pulls out a tablet to show the group old photos of downtown Winter Garden to explain its history. “We’re trying to promote the town as much as the restaurants,” Jamie said. So far, they have done a handful of tours since they opened, and they are eager to add more to their list. “It’s been such a journey to get here,” Jamie said.

New Beginnings reaches out in Winter Garden BY THE NUMBERS

Since opening a location in Winter Garden two years ago, New Beginnings has assisted hundreds in need. BRITTANY GAINES STAFF WRITER

It was the name — New Beginnings — that prompted Qwanishia Jackson to make the phone call. She and her 8-year-old son had been homeless for nearly two years and had been living out of her car for months. When she saw a pamphlet for New Beginnings, a homeless rehabilitation program based in Clermont, she knew it was the right place. “I was lost,” the Winter Garden resident said. “I had lost everything and was starting from scratch. I needed a fresh start — a new beginning.” New Beginnings was started a decade ago by Steve Smith after he saw a homeless person in need of assistance and didn’t know where to send him. “(Smith) just saw a problem and found a solution,” said Erik Segalini, director of community relations with New Beginnings. Now a decade later, the ministry has offices in Clermont, Kissim-

mee and, most recently, Winter Garden. “We started serving in Winter Garden because there were a lot of churches telling us they needed a homeless ministry where they could send people to,” Segalini said. “They were coming to us for help.” In the last two years, New Beginnings has opened a thrift store and started a social services office in the Winter Garden area. “The primary thing is that we’re trying to build a relationship and help them get resources,” Segalini said. One of the biggest contributing factors to homelessness is a lack of affordable housing in the region, Segalini said. “On average, you need to earn $22 an hour to be able to afford a two-bed apartment in Central Florida,” he said. To combat this problem, the organization broke ground earlier this summer on an affordable apartment complex, called Woodwinds Apartments. The complex will be located on a 10-acre site located on South Grand Highway in Clermont. The apartments are expected to be completed next spring. Through New Beginnings, those in need have access to food pantries, emergency groceries and hot meals, dental care, legal services and the rehabilitation program. The 14-week program is one of the core ministries of New Begin-

nings and requires participants to attend classes on Mondays through Fridays. “It’s everything from job skills to life skills to spiritual training,” Segalini said. “They write résumés, they do interview training, they do all kinds of different things.” In addition to taking classes, the participates are required to fulfill volunteer hours at the New Beginnings thrift stores. “It gives them a chance to work there in the afternoon for a few hours, and it gives us a chance to work with them,” Segalini said. “So when the time comes at the end of phase one to start looking for a job, we can give them an accurate job reference.” Since the program launched 10 years ago, New Beginnings has had

a 70% success rate of getting participants into employment. To operate the different ministries at New Beginnings, the organization relies heavily on volunteers. So far this year, more than 17,000 hours have been worked by volunteers at all New Beginnings locations. “It’s still unbelievable that there are people out there who care,” Jackson said. “They provide everything for you. I didn’t have support when I was by myself. Now I have that support.” Jackson is finishing the rehabilitation program and has plans to return to school, thanks to a scholarship, to get a degree. “They’re setting me up so it’ll be hard for me to fail,” she said. “We’ve been really blessed since we’ve been here.”

been sightings and whispers of teams preparing for the West Orange Chamber of Commerce’s annual Karaoke Clash. Video footage of Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn singing a “Phantom of the Opera” tune into a shower head was shared to Facebook last week. The town of Oakland has recruited both Oakland Preserve’s Managing Director Jennifer Hunt, a known music aficionado, and Orange County Commissioner Betsy VanderLey to bolster its team. While teams are keeping their musical selections under wraps for now, there is chatter that the competition from all parties will be fierce. This year’s annual Karaoke Clash After Hours will be held on Thursday, Sept. 14, at Citywalk’s Rising Star at Universal Orlando Resort. In past years, the competition has been based on individual performances, but this year, the chamber decided competitors will compete in teams. So far, the list of teams includes the city of Ocoee, the city of Winter Garden, the town of Oakland, the town of Windermere, Orange County Public School board members and Orange County Commission members. There also may be a few local police officers and firefighters mixed into the teams, according to the chamber. Having won two out of the last three competitions, Bruhn said winning the competition is always a challenge because the decision lies with the audience. “You never know what it is that’s going to strike their fancy,” he said. “One time it might have been talent, another time it might have been the humor and being

There’s a heck of a lot of talent on that stage. They can make you look pretty good.” This year, Bruhn will be competing with Windermere Town Council members Allen Pichon and Bob McKinley. In addition to enjoying the competition, attendees will also be able to enjoy food and drinks. “It’s for a good cause, and it’s a fun time,” Bruhn said.

West Orange volleyball tops TFA, Olympia during big week The Warriors improved to 4-0 on the season by way of two big road wins. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

Steven Ryzewski

Baylor Bumford registered the deciding kill for the Warriors in their big win against the Royals Aug. 29.

The undefeated West Orange volleyball team scored a pair of significant wins last week in two games that featured similar beginnings through two sets. Starting with the third set of each respective match, though,

the endings could not have been more different. The big week for the Warriors (4-0, with a game Sept. 5 after press time) began at The First Academy Aug. 29. West Orange faced a team it had not beaten in three previous tries under head coach Ross Usie. Thing started well for the Warriors, with a dominant 25-14 win in the first set and a 25-21 win in the second set. But West Orange quickly went from a possible

Williams was one of three Notre Dame players to rush for more than 100 yards, finishing the game with 124 yards on six carries and a touchdown.

ailey Brandon-Imes, Megan Hogan, Ryan Le and David Hargrave all joined the swim program at Ocoee High at the same time: the fall of 2015. The program was small then, with about 15 or 16 swimmers coming out at the beginning of the season and about 13 swimmers seeing the season through to the team banquet. All four swimmers showed promise back then — BrandonImes and Hogan as freshmen and Le and Hargrave as sophomores — but the program, overall, was not super competitive. Only one Knight made it through districts to regionals and Ocoee has never had a swimmer advance to state. Fast-forward two years to this season, and there is a different feel among the “Swimming Knights” — the handle of the team’s new Twitter account. There is a new coach, a whole lot of new swimmers, a new level of competition and — most importantly — a new vision for the program. “It’s honestly pretty insane,” Hargrave said. “Seeing the program grow like this makes me so happy.” The new coach is Dan Spellman, SEE BUILDING PAGE 18

Elisha ‘Shay’ Sanchez Central Florida Christian Academy junior Elisha “Shay” Sanchez, a 6-foot-2 and 325-pound left tackle, is one of the Eagles’s most valuable offensive linemen. The 16-year-old has been playing football now for 10 years and hopes to play football in college.

How did you get your start playing football? I’ve actually been playing since I was 6 years old. My father always wanted me to play football, and I’ve always been a type of person to run when I was little. I was like, “Well, can I try it?” When I tried I actually was afraid because I was like, “No, they’re too big, they’re going to hurt me,” and my parents always told me, “We are Sanchezes, so never, ever be scared.” So I tried it for the first time, and they couldn’t even get me out of the game because I loved it so much. What’s the best part of the game for you? Making the blocks for our quarterback, Caleb Brenyo. It’s always wonderful just to flatten someone on the field because I have so much going on and it’s wonderful to just take it out on the field and leave it on the field. Any advice you take out onto the field with you? Never be afraid to try. If you don’t try you won’t win. If you just sit around and don’t do anything you guys won’t come together as a team. My thing is, always try because if you don’t try you really don’t have anything to look forward to.

I hear you’re in the praise band. How did you get started with that? I’ve actually always loved to sing and loved going around the house and singing. My friend wanted me to join praise band because when we went to Miami mini-mester in March, we actually were singing and she was like, “Oh my gosh, I didn’t know you could sing!” So I’ve gotten into that, and I actually really love the praise band. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? I would go to China. I say this because China is basically where America gets most of their stuff, and I would love to see how they make it and why they make it and how the process goes. I also would like to go there because I love food. I love Chinese food. Do you have a favorite Bible verse? Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” Obviously, Christ is the only one to give you strength. If you don’t get strength from anywhere else you can always get it from Christ. Christ is always No. 1 in my life. What do you like to do outside of football? I love to sing, and I love to line dance and cook. — DANIELLE HENDRIX

and the new swimmers include a whopping 26 underclassmen to pair with 10 upperclassmen. That means the 2015 roster of about 15 swimmers has more than doubled this fall. And although there are obviously a few logistical challenges with so many swimmers at Ocoee’s practices at the Roper YMCA in Winter Garden, overall, the team’s returners and captains are excited to see such a surge in enthusiasm. “I love it — it’s just one big family,” Brandon-Imes said. “There are so many more people, so many more personalities — so many more friends, really.” Brandon-Imes and Hogan were responsible for bringing in many of the team’s newcomers, as was Spellman, who started pounding the pavement after getting the job. Spellman, a collegiate swimmer at Florida State University who nearly made the U.S. Olympic Team, has a decade of club coaching experience and was formerly the varsity coach at Lake Howell High in Seminole County. There, he similarly saw a program surge from fewer than 10 swimmers to nearly 50. And, as he tells it, growing participation is about more than just having large numbers for its own sake. “It’s not just the numbers — it’s about competition in practice and the expression, ‘iron sharpens iron,’” Spellman said. “The biggest thing is developing a culture.” That culture translates to

Spellman scheduling meets with strong programs such as Bishop Moore and Timber Creek early in the season. The Knights did not win those meets, but they performed much better than in years past. “It’s confidence,” Spellman said. “When you instill the confidence that ‘I can go up against anyone at any time,’ that’s what I want to instill.” Spellman left his role at Lake Howell to focus on finishing his doctoral degree, but after a year away from the sport, he already had the itch. When his day job in hospitality saw him move to Winter Garden, an opening at Ocoee seemed to be a perfect fit. When he interviewed, he said the administrators he spoke with expressed a desire to see swimming take off at Ocoee. “They want to take this program to the next level,” Spellman said. “The administration has done a fantastic job of letting us upgrade our program.” Those upgrades include moving the team’s home base from the Farnsworth Pool in Winter Garden to the Roper YMCA, where the team also has access to a weight room. Spellman also has increased the team’s sponsorships and forged partnerships with Rollins College (where he is an adjunct professor), Worldhotels (where he is employed) and AAA, among others. The kids have taken notice. “He’s brought in so many sponsorships for this program,” Brandon-Imes said. “He’s just brought in all this positive energy.”

Winning Warriors sweep of the Royals to a potential reverse-sweep by the Royals, as TFA won the third and fourth sets, 25-23 and 25-18. In what felt like a three-act play, the third act — which consisted of the fifth set — proved to be high-level theater. First, the Royals continued to ride their momentum from the third and fourth sets and raced out to an 8-5 lead in the firstto-15 final set. During a timeout, Usie rallied his team. “I said, ‘Hey, I know we’re not playing great volleyball right now, but we’ve got to play as a team, pick each other’s slack up a little bit and trust each other,’” Usie said.

Usie’s word must have resonated, because the Warriors battled back and the final set, which must be won by two points, ended up tied 15-15. Six exciting volleys later — the final being a kill by senior Baylor Bumford — and West Orange had won 19-17, scoring a signature win along the way. Two nights later in front of an enthusiastic crowd at rival Olympia High, the Warriors again won the first two sets. This time, though, West Orange completed the sweep. All things considered, after seeing his team comfortably win its first two games against programs that did not represent

Those sponsorships have helped pay for the relocation to the Roper YMCA, as well as to significantly lower costs for participation, and there are even some gear perks. “When we first heard about getting fastskins from sponsorships and stuff, we were pretty pumped,” Le said. More than just providing new incentives, though, Spellman has seemed to connect with his swimmers well and the results have been tangible. Now, for swimmers who may have club teammates from other area schools with more tradition, Ocoee swimmers feel more comfortable talking up their varsity program. “We’re dropping seconds, which should take months to do, and we’re doing it in a matter of weeks,” Brandon-Imes said. Any one swimmer from Ocoee making it to state this summer would be a first, and Spellman is confident about as many as six of his kids having a shot at breaking through that barrier. Still, with just under two months until districts, he knows there is much preparation and growth to be completed for talented young swimmers such as Christian Guzman, “You have two races (to get to state) — it’s swim fast or go home,” Spellman said. Whatever the outcome, though, there is a new energy for the Swimming Knights, and for the program’s veterans it is a welcome change. “I was always proud (of the program),” Hargrave said. “But now I’m extremely proud of it.”

the best Central Florida has to offer, Usie said he was proud of the way his team competed. Several players stepped up in different spots — whether it was upperclassmen such as Makala Heidelberg, Bumford, Blake Hollis and Montverde Academy transfer Kaeli Crews, or if it was dynamic underclassmen such as Taylor Head or Torey Baum — and the signs are encouraging for the Warriors. “We’re playing big points like we should be,” Usie said. “We’re making good decisions with the ball and keeping the ball in play. We were able to really push ourselves — mentally, physically — and see what we were made of.”

GAME FILM

ALL GAMES AT 7 P.M. THURSDAY BECAUSE OF HURRICANE IRMA DR. PHILLIPS (1-0) AT WEST ORANGE (1-1) Since renewing this rivalry in 2015, the Warriors and Panthers each won a game. Dr. Phillips won big last year during a down season for West Orange, and the Warriors will have their hands full with mobile Panthers quarterback BeSean McCray.

Warriors top Patriots in weather-shortened affair

BOONE (1-0) AT OCOEE (0-2) The Knights played well in a weather-shortened game against a team with several standouts last week in the Olympia Titans. They hope to build on that as they host the Braves, whose Week Two game was not played.

Guiliano Baber looks for space around the corner during a scoring drive for the Warriors.

CARROLLWOOD DAY (0-1) AT FOUNDATION (0-2) No rest for the Lions as a tough early-season schedule rolls along. Carrollwood Day won this contest handedly in 2016, 42-7. Brad Lord’s team needs to be healthy to have a shot and can look to build on a strong effort from its defense in a loss to The First Academy last week. WINDERMERE PREP (1-0) AT CFCA (1-1) The Eagles will welcome a veteran Lakers team to “The Nest” this week. Head coach Jeremy Campbell’s defense will have its work cut out for it trying to slow a stable of Windermere Prep playmakers, including quarterback Kai Patterson, running backs Ish Cortes and Mason Russell and receiver Khadry Jackson. JUPITER CHRISTIAN (2-0) AT LEGACY CHARTER (0-2) In the first of two “Eagles versus Eagles” matches on the schedule for Legacy this fall, they will host Jupiter Christian, which has outscored its opponents 77-0 through two games this fall.

WEEK TWO REPORT: WEATHER DOMINATES VARSITY FOOTBALL LANDSCAPE system used to determine playoff spots, teams are highly unlikely to cancel games, and rescheduling can be difficult. So, in the case of the Lions and the Royals, when a lightning delay stopped play in the first quarter Sept. 1, the two parties mutually agreed to wait it out — meaning the game would not resume until 9:53 p.m. and would not end until roughly 11:50.

“This is the latest game — by far — that I’ve ever played,” Royals head coach Leroy Kinard said. “The weather broke well for us — by the end, we didn’t have any rain at all.” The First Academy (2-0) won the game, 26-7. Foundation Academy is 0-2.

OTHER WEEK TWO RESULTS Olympia 22, Ocoee 14 This game was called to halftime because of weather and counts as a complete game. Ocoee is 0-2.

Downtown living DANIELLE HENDRIX STAFF WRITER

I

f you’ve ever wanted to live in the heart of downtown Winter Garden, the newest

opportunity to do so is about to break ground. Park Place Winter Garden is a new community of luxury townhouses that will be nestled near the southeast corner of Plant Street and Park Avenue. With 32 units and seven different models — ranging in size from 1,800 to 2,500 square feet — homebuyers have a wealth of customizations and floor plans from which to choose.

Sixteen homes will be threestory townhouses, 12 will be two stories, and the remaining units are two stories with lofts. Additionally, six of these units can be converted into 3,000-squarefoot units, lead developer Franco Scala said. “It’s a neat project, with all the amenities that we have, based on the location,” said Scala, builder/ owner at F&J Developers. “We (myself and business partner Jim Heistand) feel that the location is a Class A location. It allows people to live and work there and to enjoy the downtown historic district of Winter Garden. We do have certain units on Plant Street, and seven units there will be used as professional office space.” The townhouses come with a variety of choices and customization packages, upgrades and more. Scala added that most of the units have elevators and dumbwaiters to assist in bringing groceries upstairs. “There’s a variety of upgrades if they choose to look at them, or we can apply a different look to the unit,” Scala said. “We’re willing to change a few things upon request from the buyer. The key features are the elevators and dumbwaiters.” Each home has three beds and three-and-one-half baths, with options to use the first floor as an office instead of a bedroom. Eight units are designed to have a bedroom on the first floor, with a built-in office space.

Although it is a modern community, Park Place Winter Garden is also designed to fit into the historical charm of downtown Winter Garden. Buildings facing the road are adorned with classic red brickwork, with some units also boasting canopy-shaded porches in the style of balconies. Landscaping is simple and borders the community on all sides, while a decorative fountain faces outward on the east side of the property. All homes also include a two-car garage. “The unique thing is that it’s in the historical district of Winter Garden, and we have designed the project to go in with what Winter Garden already has in place, as a historical place,” Scala said of the design. “The project’s been designed to accommodate that look as well.” F&J Developers are set to break ground on the $10.5 million project Thursday, Sept. 14. And although the official groundbreaking is coming up, Scala said

work is already underway at the “The unique thing location for site preparation. They hope to go vertical within the next is that it’s in the 60 days, with a ballpark completion date of the third quarter of historical district of 2019. Prices start in the mid- Winter Garden and $400,000s as a baseline, before additional options, upgrades and we have designed other modifications are added. “I’m a local, I live in Winder- the project to go in mere and have frequented Winter Garden for the last 15 years,” with what Winter Scala said. “I always had a passion to someday to build a community Garden already has here in Winter Garden, and the timing and opportunity for us in place, as a histo look at this available land just came up. We decided that it was torical place.” the right time, and a perfect location for us to look at building in — Franco Scala, Winter Garden. lead developer “I feel strongly that the comat F&J Developers munity is going to enhance the 720 Celebration A quaint landscape of downtown Winter Garden,” Scala said. “It Celebration fits well within downtown 720 the Celebration Avenue, Suite 100, Facebook.com/Cen FL 34747 that they have goingCelebration on.” Multi-Lingual Offices Offices in Celebration, Windermere and Davenport
