Turn for the worse A late turn in its path pushed the eye of Hurricane Irma closer to West Orange County Sept. 10 and 11. Among the losses: a nearly 100-year-old water tower from Winter Garden’s citrus days. OBSERVER STAFF

T

he water tower wasn’t included on the National Register of Historic Places, or any other historic site, for that matter, but it held significant value in Winter Garden nonetheless. Constructed in the 1920s, the tank was an important part of the operations at the South Lake Apopka Citrus Growers Association in Tildenville for decades. To locals in recent times, it was an endearing reminder of yesteryear. But the old structure was no match for Hurricane Irma, which raged through Central Florida late Sunday, Sept. 10, and early Monday, Sept. 11. The tower, located on the old South Lake Apopka Citrus Growers Association property on Tildenville School Road, was knocked to the ground sometime during the storm, sending rushing waters into nearby businesses and destroying inventory and records. Chick-fil-A in Winter Garden employees have taken initiative to help raise money for coworker Darius Jones, who recently was involved in a serious car crash.

If you asked Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy what his business was about — besides eating more chicken — you’d be told it also encompassed customer service and community involvement. Under Cathy’s philosophy, Chick-fil-A restaurants became more than places for fast food — their employees also become family. So when employees at

HELP DARIUS RECOVER Chick-fil-A Winter Garden employee Darius Jones faces a tough road ahead of him, both physically and financially, but he is grateful for the support his coworkers and community have shown him so far. For more information and to donate to Jones’s medical fund, visit gofundme.com/ help-darius-recover.

Chick-fil-A’s Winter Garden location learned their friend and coworker, Darius Jones, was involved in a serious car accident, his Chick-fil-A family jumped into action. Upon hearing that her coworker and friend was seriously injured, Victoria Smith knew she had to do something. She created a GoFundMe page for Jones, who now is recovering from injuries sustained from the crash. “I started the GoFundMe because Darius is a good friend of mine, and he is a major role model at our Chick-fil-A,” Smith said. “I knew he was going to be in financial need, as he stayed in the hospital for a week and now is looking at 12 weeks of recovery with a lot of physical therapy. There are so many people (who) know and love Darius, so I knew there would be lots of people who would want to help support him and show him how cared for he is.” Three weeks ago, Jones was driving home from Orlando on a Friday night when his car collided with a semi truck. The car was totaled, and Jones sustained serious injuries, including a broken femur and knee cap, as well

as bruising and scratching to his face, eye and arms. Wreckers who came to his aid said he was lucky to be alive, Smith said. The GoFundMe page was created Aug. 22. Since then, 66 people have helped raise $3,245 for Jones’s recovery process. However, as Smith said, that amount totals only a small percentage of everything he is facing financially. He will need a new vehicle and faces medical bills, along with physical therapy. “It’s so amazing to see how everyone comes together to show that they care for him,” Smith said. “I think this has helped motivate him to heal and stay positive throughout this process. That was really my main purpose in starting the GoFundMe. The money helps a lot, but mostly it’s encouraging him to stay focused on recovering.” When Jones saw the GoFundMe page and how many people had shared and donated in his name, he was simultaneously shocked and humbled. “The support that I am receiving from my friends, coworkers, guests from work and community has just been a complete blessing,” Jones said. “I am extremely shocked to have collected the amount I currently have, and I am just so thankful for every donation.”

Friends and coworkers of Chick-fil-A Winter Garden employee Darius Jones have rallied to raise funds to help alleviate medical bills from his recent car crash.

WHEN: Friday, Sept. 15 INSTRUCTIONS: To participate, take a selfie and post it to social media, such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, with the tag #HealthyWestOrange. Participants will be entered to win a YMCA annual membership. Anyone who posts a selfie by Thursday, Sept. 14, will be entered once, and anyone who posts on Friday, Sept. 15, will be entered twice.

“The idea is to have a call to action — to have everybody engaging in the community,” said Tracy Swanson, executive director of West Orange Healthcare District, one of the founding organizations of Healthy West Orange. The idea for Healthy Selfie Day came after the organization went through a website revitalization. “We redid our website and made it more interactive,” Swanson said. “So we wanted to create an opportunity for everybody to engage. (Healthy Selfie Day) is a fun way for the community to become aware of the Healthy West Orange movement and to join.” Healthy West Orange was launched nearly two years ago with the goal of promoting a healthier lifestyle for West Orange residents. “We want everyone in the community to have the same goal — to be the healthiest community in the nation,” Swanson said. Healthy West Orange provides participants with a variety of tools — from recipes to tips to stay active — to help them live a healthier lifestyle. Already, there is talk of making Healthy Selfie Day an annual event, and anyone who participates on Friday will be entered to win a YMCA annual membership for the entire family. Hundreds of Healthy Selfie Day buttons have been handed out to spread the word about the event. Even the Healthy West Orange mascot, Westly, has been spotted at several locations around West Orange and featured in several #HealthySelfie photos on social media. For those who want to get in an extra entry for the YMCA membership, post a selfie anytime before Friday, Sept. 15, and don’t forget to add the tag #HealthyWestOrange. “If people post from now until the 14th, they get one entry,” Swanson said about the YMCA contest. “If they post on Healthy Selfie Day, they get two entries.” Participants have until midnight on Healthy Selfie Day to post their selfie. Winners will be chosen on Saturday, Sept. 16.

On Tuesday morning, employees of Ledet Services, a fabricating and welding company that rents a building there, were pulling out furniture and files outside, seeing what could be saved. Across the parking lot, Kathy Robertson, owner of Party Plus, was preparing to set up tables in the sun to allow her important papers to dry. She was already tallying up the damage to her inventory, saying her cotton-candy machine was a loss and hoping her chocolate fountain, sno-cone machine and other electrical pieces would still work. When the tank fell, the water blasted through the concrete wall outside Party Plus, smashing the wall and filling one of her four spaces with water and mud. When she returned to her place of business, all of her machines and party supplies were pushed against the northern wall. She spent an entire day washing mud off the walls and surveying the damage. Lester Austin, a former citrus grower who owns the property, said he suspects a tornado struck the tower because of the twisted metal. None of it is salvageable, he said. Although it wasn’t used for potable water, the tank provided water for the former packinghouse’s fire sprinklers and plumbing and for tenants to wash their vehicles. Water was supplied by a deep well, Austin said. He is planning to talk to the city of Winter Garden about hooking up to the city’s

Damage at West Orange High School included the collapse of these stadium lights.

At Daniel’s Cheesesteak, it all started with ice. The restaurant had its ice machine cranking for days prior to Irma, resulting in dozens of extra bags of ice ready to go. “We saw the need for essentials; unfortunately, we couldn’t provide water, but we (had) plenty (of) ice, bread and canned goods,” said Frankie Liz, vice president of sales and marketing for Daniel’s Cheesesteak. Liz’s father wanted to be open at 6 a.m. Saturday to feed the community breakfast. People were lined up around the building and placing orders over the phone. “We didn’t realize that it was just us and Wawa open that day, which caused a line wrapped around the store of folks getting ice, bread, rice or canned goods, along with dairy,” he said. “We didn’t realize how crazy it would be.” While Liz ran the register, Lotto and hot and warm foods, his wife, Adriana, took orders. His parents, Harold and Mercedes, and brother Brian cooked in the kitchen. The five worked nonstop from 6 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., when they finally closed. “It was a very accomplished feeling at the end knowing we contributed to help the community by either giving them great comfort food or last-minute cold cuts, ice, dairy or essentials needed for the storm,” he said. “We would do it all over again if we could.” — DANIELLE HENDRIX

ORLO VISTA FLOODED Orange County Fire Rescue and the National Guard rescued 149 people from 550 homes in the Orlo Vista community. The flooding came fast and furious in that neighborhood, with some of the homes taking on water by 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10. As rains continued to drench Central Florida overnight, more than 149 residents in the Orlo Vista area of Pine Hills reported extensive flooding to homes in excess of several feet. According to the agency’s Twitter account, an estimated 550 homes were affected by the flooding near the

intersection of South Kirkman Road and Old Winter Garden Road. Overnight and throughout Monday morning, both Orange County Fire Rescue and the Florida National Guard were called in to rescue the residents of that area. Orange County Fire Chief Otto Drozd III said the agency would make sure everyone in the area would be evacuated to nearby shelters. “We’re prepared to really go out and be the resource for the community to start bringing some normalcy back to their lives,” he said. — BRITTANY GAINES

water system. Austin is a thirdgeneration resident; his grandfather farmed in Winter Garden before transitioning to citrus in the 1940s. In the days leading up to Hurricane Irma’s Florida arrival Sept. 10 and 11, West Orange residents were preparing — but not panicking. Meteorologists projected the storm first to come up Florida’s East Coast and later revised that to the state’s West Coast. However, it wasn’t until hours before Irma’s Central Florida arrival just after midnight that the prediction changed yet again — with the eye coming closer to eastern Lake County and West Orange. The storm’s path placed its mostdamaging northeast-quadrant winds near Winter Garden, Oakland, Ocoee, Windermere and Horizon West. “Based on our preliminary assessments coming in this morning, the damage from this storm appears to be far greater than what we experienced with Hurricane Charley in 2004,” Mayor Teresa Jacobs said in a press conference Monday morning. The storm — a Category 2 hurricane with up to 100-mph wind gusts when it ripped through Central Florida — knocked out power for nearly 400,000 residents in Orange County (and 15 million statewide). Duke Energy had reported that out of its nearly 370,000 customers in Orange County, 208,000 had lost power during the storm, with nearly 67,000 of those outages being reported in West Orange. Orlando Utilities Commission Vice President of Marketing Roseanne Harrington predicted the outage will be “the largest utility restoration

and rebuild project in the history of the United States.” The town of Windermere suffered significant tree damage as well as downed power lines. “We estimate over 100 trees fell, and we had three complete road closures, including Main Street, Lake Butler Boulevard and Park Avenue,” Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn said. “The problem is the tree company can’t get the trees out of there because they’re all wrapped up in power lines, so we’ve got to wait for Duke to deenergize them to remove the trees, but I’m hoping we’ll have that done soon.” Ocoee Mayor Rusty Johnson said his city experienced similar damage. “It’s mostly just a lot of trees down, got tree damage to some houses,” he said. “(City staff) is driving around doing an assessment of all the damage right now to see what the problems are, but you got to be careful driving around here and watch for power lines. The power’s out all over. My area is out, but on the north side of town, most of the power is in.” In Oakland, the storm damaged power lines that service Oakland’s water treatment plant, but Mike

Parker, Public Works director, said there was no loss of water or pressure because of the town’s backup system. He stayed all night at the Orange County Fire Station in Oakland so he could be available in case of an emergency. He was out early Tuesday morning to assess the damage. “We had only minor flooding, and all the retention ponds are full, but the damage could have been a lot worse,” Parker said. Winter Garden Mayor John Rees did not return messages by press time Tuesday. The county also opened 21 shelters, including locations at West Orange and Ocoee high schools and Gotha and Lakeview middle schools. According to Orange County Public Information Officer Doreen Overstreet, about 4,300 residents and 200 pets took refuge in the shelters countywide. Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs placed a countywide curfew from 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, to 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11. Orange County Public Schools has been closed since Friday, Sept. 8. As of press time Tuesday, 66 district schools still had no power. Orange County reported that 911 dispatch centers received 1,381 calls between midnight and 5:45 a.m. on Monday morning.

The woman, who had a large amount of cash in a jar in her living room, believed her babysitter may have stolen some of the cash in May while she was on vacation. The woman claimed when she counted before leaving, the jar had a minimum of $1,200. She had since added a lot of money after having returned from vacation but noticed there was only $1,000 the last time she counted. The woman suspected her babysitter but did not file a report given the lack of evidence. After media visited her home regarding the arrest of her babysitter for an unrelated charge, her young daughter informed her she had seen the babysitter taking money out of the jar twice. The babysitter was charged with grand theft in the third degree. AUG. 17

13207 block of West Colonial Drive. An officer dispatched to a bank was informed a woman had entered the drive-thru and presented an ID, debit card and personal check for $1,235 that she wanted to deposit in another account. When the bank teller looked up the account, the teller noticed a fraud alert. The teller then requested to confirm the customer’s identity via security questions. The customer was unable to answer any of the questions. The customer then left the area, but police apprehended the woman using the teller’s description of the car and the woman. Detectives later discovered the debit card and ID had been reported stolen in January, and

the check had been stolen in a recent burglary. The woman was charged with grand theft in the third degree, fraudulent use of personal identification, uttering a forged check and Florida communications fraud.

Orange County district joins suit against state over HB7069 OCPS committed $25,000 to join a lawsuit regarding a controversial law formerly known as House Bill 7069. GABBY BAQUERO NEWS EDITOR ORANGE COUNTY Orange County Public Schools has followed 10 other Florida school districts that plan to sue the state regarding a new education law signed by Gov. Rick Scott that took effect July 1. Several school districts opposed many of the law’s provisions, formerly known as House Bill 7069, even before Tallahassee lawmakers passed it with a vote count of 73-36 in the House and 20-18 in the Senate — only one vote shy of killing it. Following their long-held discontent, school boards across Florida have banded together to legally challenge the Florida Legislature over the controversial education-conforming law, including Orange, Miami-Dade, Broward, Polk, Palm Beach, Volusia, Bay, St. Lucie, Hamilton and Lee counties. During an Aug. 15 meeting, Orange County School Board members voted to commit $25,000 in non-taxpayer funds to the lawsuit, which targets five issues in the law as unconstitutional. The five issues pertain to schools of hope; charter school contracts; the designation of eligible charter school systems as a Local Education Authority; the sharing of discretionary capital millage with charters; and single subject rule. Diego “Woody” Rodriguez, who serves as the general counsel for OCPS and worked for the state Legislature as an analyst for three years, highlighted the grievances expressed by OCPS and like-minded school districts. OCPS board members allege the law erodes local control of the public school system and gives an advantage to charter schools via less-restrictive regulations and extra taxpayer funding that boosts charters’ ability to expand, he said. “We’re not in this for the sake of being right,” Rodriguez said. “We have genuine concerns about the

constitutionality of some of the provisions. And because of those concerns, we want them to fix it and if we’re satisfied in how they fix it, we’ll withdraw from the lawsuit. … We don’t want to be in the lawsuit any more than the other districts do, but we can’t sit around and watch this be law.” OCPS has sent a letter to the Speaker of the House Richard Corcoran and the Senate President Joe Negron informing them that if the Legislature addresses their concerns in a special session, OCPS will drop the lawsuit, Woody said. However, he anticipates the districts will head to court within the next 60 days. “I used to work in the Legislature as an analyst, and bills that were comprised at the last minute always had flaws and issues, and nine times out of 10, a large piece of legislation adopted at the last minute usually came back the following year with substantial revisions and rewrites,” Rodriguez said. “And I suspect that the lawmakers are not going to be receptive to change.” If the circuit judge rules against the school districts, Rodriguez believes the districts will file an appeal until it reaches the Florida Supreme Court — a process which could take months to years. But if a judge declares any of the provisions in the law unconstitutional, then the law will become null and void. However, there’s also the option of injunctive relief. “We could also find ourselves in a situation involving injunctive relief, in which the courts say the law will not be enforced until it’s interpreted by the courts,” he said. “But I don’t know if we’ll be seeking injunctive relief or if it would be granted — it’s a big if. But, ultimately, it will all likely be played out in the courts, and if we’re wrong, then we’re wrong. We’ll just live with the law how it is. But if we’re right, then the Legislature will have to go back to the drawing board.”

LEGAL CHALLENGES TO HB7069 n The bill combined about 50 different bills with provisions that were previously introduced but never went through the legislative committee process. n The bill was provided to the Legislature at 4:20 p.m. on the Friday before the session was scheduled to end. n Schools of Hope are not subject to school board policies, and school boards cannot remove their board members or administrators. n Not allowing school boards to negotiate additional terms or conditions for charter school contracts violates the Florida Constitution because it eliminates school boards’ ability to provide the oversight prescribed in the Constitution. n If charter schools can be designated as a local education authority, a “charter school system” could apply for and receive federal funds independently of and in direct competition with local school boards. n The mandatory sharing of ad valorem taxes with charter school organizations is inconsistent with the constitution, which does not allow school districts to use its taxing power to aid a corporation. 65 years ago

A shortage of doctors in Winter Garden will be alleviated by the coming of Dr. Edward Bradford, from Cedartown, Georgia. He will open the offices located on North Boyd Street, in the Edgewater Hotel building, formerly occupied by Dr. Whitehurst. Bradford comes to Winter Garden for the U.S. Armed Forces. Before entering the service, he practiced at Orange Memorial Hospital.

The Winter Garden American Legion and Auxiliary honored four young people who were representatives during State Week in Tallahassee: Cal Sadler, Eddie Bradford, Pam Bekemeyer and Linda Walker. A site selection for the proposed Valencia Junior College is expected any day now. Several locations for the new college have been studied.

FROM THE ARCHIVES Jerome Brown is the name associated with the young man in this photograph from the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation archive. A visitor to the History Center suggested that he might be associated with Brown’s Bar and Package Store, located at various addresses from 1961 through the 1990s on Center Street in east Winter Garden; the store appears to be seen in the background. WGHF staff is currently researching the people, homes and businesses in the traditionally African-American neighborhood of east Winter Garden, and residents are asked to share information, photographs and history with the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation. I love the ’80s The first fundraiser for Windermere High’s Wolverine Legacy Fund promises to be an evening full of neon, food and ’80s nostalgia. STAFF WRITER HORIZON WEST Break out your sweatbands, leg warmers and neon wardrobe and get ready to go retro for the Windermere Wolverine community. The new high school’s first major fundraiser of the school year is just around the corner. Tentatively set for Saturday, Sept. 16, at West Orange Country Club — depending on the country club’s posthurricane reopening — guests will don their ’80s best to support local students. The “Totally Awesome ’80s Dinner and Auction Night” will benefit Windermere High’s Wolverine Legacy Fund. The fund is an ongoing means to promote academics, athletics and arts programs at the school. Over the years, the Wolverine Legacy Fund will continue to collect funds to provide resources for students making achievements in those three areas. During the event, guests will be treated to live entertainment by local ’80s cover band “Switch,” as well as a dinner buffet, live auction and dancing. “The fundraiser is a night for the community to come out and support WHS’s Wolverine Legacy Fund,” said PTSO President Jane Dunkelberger. “The foundation or ‘fund’ will be the vehicle to assist and provide funds for all the programs of academic, athletic and arts, with the first program the Legacy Fund is committed to is the ACS.” As the inaugural beneficiary of the fund, the Academic Consortium of Scholars, is one of the ways Windermere High staff and administration are planning to further involve and encourage students in the learning process. According to Principal Douglas Guthrie, the ACS program is meant to make studying and

The fund accepts cash, check and credit cards in either one lump-sum payment or multiple installments throughout the school year. The Lakeside Church, in Oakland, has operated a single-mothers ministry called Unforsaken Women Corporation for about six years, and church members found they were constantly trying to come up with fundraisers to keep the ministry afloat. To better serve the mission, Mo Mydlo founded Unforsaken Treasures Resale Shop, which allows people to make donations of items to help sustain the program. The mission reaches women and children on a local and global level. A grand opening was held July 15. The shop sells men’s, women’s and children’s clothing and shoes, as well as accessories and jewelry, toys, household decor and some furniture, at resale prices. A boutique in the front of the shop boasts costume jewelry and an assortment of cocktail dresses and floor-length gowns.

“We were excited to be the only resale shop in Oakland, and we realized we needed more warehouse space than retail space,” Mydlo said. “And we wanted to be somewhere that we could be in partnership with Lakeside Church so this could be an offsite benevolent center for them. It worked out to be right in their backyard.” The shop is situated behind the church, which is at the western end of Oakland Avenue. Jimi Klein, the outreach director at Lakeside Church, is the store manager. Proceeds benefit Unforsaken Women Corporation, which assists single mothers and widows in West Orange County, as well as a Haitian school. Probably the most important international work of the UWC is its partnership with Priority One Worldwide, a nonprofit that financially supports The Good Samaritan Academy in Moris-

A new widow support group recently formed, as well. UWC also supports a television ministry. Mydlo tapes “Moments with Mo” segments for the Welcome Home show on The Good Life TV 45. She films four per month, and the short, four-minute teaching segments help encourage people’s faith and help them renew their mind in the word of God, she said. Mydlo is excited about the various ministries of UWC. Once a month, a women’s community event and Bible study is extended to females from all area churches. Attendees come together for worship, food, testimonies and an encouraging message from Mydlo. A food pantry is coming to the Unforsaken Treasures space in November, and Lakeside is hosting a food drive from Oct. 1 to 30. The community can donate non-perishable food items during store hours, and the Facebook page has a list of suggested donations.

West Orange names new girls lacrosse coach Nikki Thorndill was hired to coach the Warriors Aug. 30, after longtime coach Mary Hopkins stepped down. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

Steven Ryzewski

Before coming to West Orange, Nikki Thorndill coached at Ocoee.

WINTER GARDEN When Jerry Shafer, the new athletic director at West Orange High, received word that one of school’s most experienced and respected coaches would be stepping down to pursue other avenues, it could have been disastrous for the school’s girls lacrosse team. Mary Hopkins had, after all, coached the Warriors to several successful seasons and is a well-regarded figure in the local

lacrosse scene and beyond Fortunately, though, there just happened to be an experienced girls lacrosse coach already teaching on campus. Nikki Thorndill, who has been teaching social studies at West Orange High since fall of 2011, started the girls lacrosse program at Ocoee High in the spring of 2007. “With her being on campus, and she was very successful at Ocoee — it was a no-brainer,” Shafer said. “I just like her approach to everything.” Thorndill’s original team at

Ocoee went 0-9 in the spring of 2007 but bounced back the next season with a 9-4 record. The team’s strongest season came in 2009, when the Knights went 12-5, and Thorndill’s overall record at Ocoee from 2007 through 2011 was 38-33, per laxpower.com. Thorndill came to the area from New York, where she grew up on Long Island and played collegiately at the University of Albany. After her college career concluded, the coach who recruited her to Albany — Dennis Short — had taken the head coaching job at Rollins College in Winter Park, and he suggested she come to Florida

all made sure to let the sophomore pitcher and outfielder for the Warriors know they had seen his national television debut in the Perfect Game Select Baseball Festival’s 14U Game Sept. 3, which was broadcast by Fox Sports. “(My teammates) were all watching and cheering me on — I got a bunch of Snapchats from all

of them,” Montgomery said. The game featured 40 of the top amateur players in the country age 14 and younger, split into East and West teams. The festivities took place out of Fort Myers’ JetBlue Ballpark, the Spring Training home of the Boston Red Sox. Montgomery, a Florida State commit who plays his travel baseball for Power Baseball, has been to many high-profile showcases — including the USA Baseball 15U Trials earlier this summer — but said this most recent event was the best yet. Emani Croker When Ocoee High senior Emani Croker tried out for cheerleading her freshman year, she didn’t have any background in the sport. But she immediately made the varsity squad, and four years later is serving as its captain and is a role model for the girls.

grade year, which was my first year ever cheering, and I made varsity. Do you have a background in gymnastics or dance? I did gymnastics when I was 2, which was like the mommyand-me classes. But then I stopped and got into dancing, and now I cheer. What’s the best part of cheerleading for you? My favorite part is the games, Friday night lights! I really enjoy the crowd and cheering. What does being cheer captain mean to you? It just

shows positive leadership. I get to keep the girls encouraged and make sure they have someone to look up to. Tell me something you’ve learned from cheerleading these past four years. It taught me leadership. Peer pressure is a big thing in high school, so cheerleading taught me that I had to be a leader and not follow the crowd. We’re looked at like we should be leaders, so basically it just showed me I have to be a leader no matter what, no matter what my friends did. Any plans for after high school? I’m going to the University of Alabama — Roll Tide! I want to study aeronautical engineering. If you had your favorite food sitting in front of you, what would it be? Chili fries, because I love chili and I eat it on everything — hot dogs and crazy stuff. It’s my favorite food. What’s your least favorite chore? Wash the dishes — it makes my ankles itch. Standing there makes my ankles itch, it’s weird. Do you have a favorite cheer or stunt? My favorite cheer is Knights Attack. It gets the crowd going, and it’s a crowd-led cheer. The crowd is very involved with that cheer, so I like that one.

“This is the top event, for sure — it had the most prestige, we got the most stuff, there were the best kids there,” Montgomery said. “It’s cool to meet kids around the country, because things are different. You can ask them questions and stuff.” Montgomery arrived Aug. 31 in Fort Myers, and the festivities began with a team dinner. When the players arrived at their hotel rooms, there was a pile of gear waiting for them. The next day, players practiced before heading to a local children’s hospital, where they worked on arts and crafts with some of the patients. On Saturday, the invitees again practiced, but followed it with a scrimmage and home-run derby. Finally, on Sunday, game day arrived, and all 40 players signed autographs before taking the field at JetBlue Ballpark. “The game was fun, definitely, but I liked the home-run derby because I hit one over the ‘green monster,’” Montgomery said.

to grow the game as a career. “He (Short) was like, ‘Well, why don’t you come teach and coach down here?’” Thorndill said. While teaching at West Orange, Thorndill briefly served as an assistant to Hopkins, but she mostly has been away from the high-school lacrosse scene for the last six years. Given the chance to pick up the baton at a program with as much tradition as West Orange is a welcome opportunity. “I’m very excited,” she said. “Lacrosse has been a huge part of my life — I went to college for it, I came to Florida for it, I met my husband because of it. I’m so excited about coaching the athletes at West Orange. I’m grateful to Mary, and I’m grateful for her efforts and everything she put into this program.” Like many programs at West Orange this fall, the girls lacrosse program was destined to have a different feel even before the coaching change. In the actual game, Montgomery was part of a 5-1 victory for the East. He pitched one inning and struck out two batters, including one to end the inning. “I think I did well on the mound,” Montgomery said. “I could have thrown harder, but I was more worried about throwing strikes.” Back in West Orange, Montgomery — whose parents live in Winter Garden and Windermere — is focused on fall ball for the Warriors and getting better. As a freshman for West Orange last spring, the two-way player did not see a ton of action on a loaded squad, and that was by design. This time around, though, head coach Jesse Marlo expects Montgomery to be an important part of the Warriors’ pitching rotation and batting lineup. “Without wanting to put too much pressure on him … we expect him to kind of fill into that role this year,” Marlo said. “We all know he has the talent — that was on display this weekend.”

classmen being zoned for the new Windermere High program means there will be plenty of new faces being charged with new roles for the Warriors. Thorndill said she plans to start by building a relationship with her players. She has an idea for a style of play she’d like her team to exhibit — a disciplined, methodical attack based on setplays — and will get to work on creating a schedule for the spring season soon. Returning to the sideline and replacing a veteran coach such as Hopkins will be no small task, but Thorndill said she is ready. “I’m sure it’s going to be a challenge,” Thorndill said. “But I like challenges.”
