IMMERSE 2021 IS HERE! For the ninth year, Creative City Project will host one of Central Florida’s signature arts events, IMMERSE, in downtown Orlando. Taking place Oct. 15 to 17, IMMERSE will showcase hundreds of artists and live performances in the streets and public spaces spanning 10 city blocks. Guests will be able to

enjoy creative encounters and interactive art. Featured performances include Dare to Dream, a high-energy acrobatics performance with trampoline and stilts performers, as well as live musicians on a large scaffolding structure in the middle of Orange Avenue. Other participants include Orlando

Ballet, Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and Central Florida Community Arts. The third day of IMMERSE, Color Day, will allow guests to become the canvas and get colorful via colored powder fights, bright eruptions of foam, live performances and bubbles. To purchase tickets, visit immersefest.com.

IN THE KNOW BY DANIELLE HENDRIX | ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Although the COVID-19 pandemic isn’t over, many events in the arts community around Central Florida are back — and some even better than ever. Here is a quick primer on some newsworthy arts celebrations and leadership changes as we head into the fall and winter seasons.

3

OPO MUSIC DIRECTOR EXTENDS CONTRACT The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra announced Aug. 26 Music Director Eric Jacobsen renewed his contract with OPO to extend through the 2023-24 season, with an option to extend through the 2024-25 season. Highlights of Jacobsen’s conducting during the 2021– 22 season include time with The Knights at the Tanglewood Festival, Caramoor Festival and the Naumburg Orchestral Concerts at the

Central Park Bandshell in New York City. Jacobsen also will lead the Detroit Symphony and Virginia Symphony this October.

ORLANDO BALLET’S ROBERT HILL STEPS DOWN After 13 years with the Orlando Ballet, Artistic Director Robert Hill stepped down Aug. 13. “I am incredibly grateful for the 13 wonderful years leading the organization,” Hill said in a prepared statement. “Creativity and leadership can be exhausting, especially when combined with recovering from a full knee replacement. After 13 years, with the company in such great shape … now is the time to take some time off. I look forward to having time

CORNELL FINE ARTS MUSEUM CHANGES NAMES If you’re wondering what happened to the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College, never fear — it has a new name. As of Sept. 1, the museum is now known as the Rollins Museum of Art. The name change connects the museum to the college and lets visitors know it is run by Rollins. The name change is the first step toward the museum’s eventual move to a new home in downtown Winter Park It will be located at the intersection of Interlachen and New England avenues, across from the Alfond Inn, where part of Rollins’ art collection is already on display. The new $22.6 million building will offer free exhibits and programs year round and will span 30,000 square feet across two stories — tripling the size of the current museum. Key features include larger galleries, study rooms, an education center, auditorium and café.

to focus on my recovery and to moving forward.” Jorden Morris, the company’s choreographer-in-residence, has been appointed guest artistic director for the 202122 season. Morris is known by the company for the 2021-21 season performances of his works “Moulin Rouge” and “Peter Pan.” The Orlando Ballet Board has appointed a search committee, which will conduct a worldwide search to find a new artistic leader to continue the company’s momentum.
