The following information is a glimpse of the business the ROA Board of Directors addressed at the Oct. 24 meeting. A complete copy of the official minutes can be obtained on the Community Network, BaldwinParkNetwork.com. n The board discussed the townhome leak issue and made a motion confirming that the association is not responsible for the leaks but will continue to assist in the resolution of the leak issue. It was discussed with an owner that per the Declaration, the ROA is not responsible for the care of or replacement of homeowner street trees even in the event of a storm or hurricane. n The board approved reimbursing the owner(s) of 1886 Sipes Alley the amount DRS proposes that would repair the destructive testing

The reimbursement will be provided to the owner(s) once a liability waiver provided by Mr. Taylor P.A. has been executed by the owner(s). n The board approved replacing the backflow at Enders Facility Center. n The board approved the proposed 2018 budget with the understanding that it may have to be amended in the future.

BALDWIN PARK SERVICES APP UPDATE As of Oct. 24, there are 3,590 people who have signed up. The number has increased by 1,818 in the last 60 days. LANDSCAPE REPLACEMENTS The sod replacements approved for Ardsdale Mews Bermuda repairs, Oak Mews Bermuda repair and Parkland Quadrangle Bermuda repairs have been canceled. This is because the sod at the farms was underwater for a long period of time, and in the interim, the sod has recovered in all but Parkland Quadrangle. Sod repairs will be needed here, and an updated proposal will be brought back to the board. The Grace Hopper Zoysia/ Bermuda repairs will be completed in November.

n There was minor damage from Hurricane Irma located within the Neighborhood Business District Area. The property lost several trees throughout the park area and located next to office buildings. The trees have been cleared and the area is currently under review for what will be used as replacements for plant material/trees. The Village Center only had some debris throughout the parking lots which required removal.
n As Baldwin Park continues to age, it would be a great time to consider painting buildings, structures and fences/walls. It’s amazing to see the difference once a fresh coat of paint has been applied. Remember to submit all paint requests to the Commercial ARC prior to applying for review.

TOWNHOME SERVICE AREA COMMITTEE MEETING
Who is responsible for maintaining townhome driveways? The townhomes are fee simple properties just like any single-family home, where the owner owns the townhome inside and out as well as the land on which it sits. There are specific maintenance items the association performs on the owner’s behalf, which are stated in Exhibit “G” (or Exhibit “H” for Live/ Work townhomes) of the Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions for Baldwin Park Homeowner’s Association. Driveways are not included as an association responsibility. Anything not specifically stated under Exhibit G or H of the Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions for Baldwin Park Homeowner’s Association is a homeowner responsibility. Driveways are a homeowner responsibility to repair and/or replace. If you have any additional questions regarding townhomes, please contact Brad Wasil at bwasil@baldwinparkpoa.com.

ook! Up in the sky! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the First Baldwin Park Joint Committee New Year’s Eve fireworks going off. The first three sentences are from the first “Superman” TV series (1952-1958). Other great lines from the show were the reporter character Jimmy Olson saying, “Jeepers, Mr. Kent,” and, “Golly, gee whiz!” Not to digress much more, but I recently read that George Reeves (Superman) was nervous about meeting young fans of the show because some wanted to test him to see if he really was invincible. One young fan pointed a loaded luger pistol that his dad brought back from World War II at “Superman” and was going to shoot to see if bullets really bounced off the superhero. Reeves convinced the fan to hand over the luger because someone might get injured when the bullet bounced off of Superman.
“ 12
On a more personal note, I, like just about every boy I knew then, used to use a blanket to simulate Superman’s cape and jump off items around the house and various high places outside to “fly’ like Superman. My mother caught me just in time as I was about to jump off a second story roof at our home. (That was the end of my flying outside.) I also remember not being able to understand that Superman was dead when Reeves was found dead in his home with a bullet to his head. How could that be? Anyhow, back on topic. Residents for several years have been asking in the Baldwin Park Residential Owners Association Annual Activity Surveys for an event on New Year’s Eve. (This is why it is important for you to answer the annual survey — so your ideas will be considered.) It also was discussed after a resident posted the idea on NextDoor. So this year, the Baldwin Park Joint Committee’s Activity Committee has directed BOOM Marketing and Events, our contracted event planners for the ROA and Joint Committee events, to put together an event for New Year’s Eve. (BOOM Marketing and Events put on our annual Independence Day, Winter Spark in Baldwin Park (Christmas parade), Kidtoberfest Halloween Party and Party in the Park events.) New Years Eve is a great celebration that everyone can enjoy. Our event will bring together the Baldwin Park community and
other participants to enjoy a fun, all-ages event in the Village Center by Lake Baldwin. It will give you a local place to enjoy the holiday with your family and friends. And, unlike our Independence Day event, which never has been and never will be on July 4 (the City of Orlando owns Lake Baldwin and won’t allow use to have our event on the same day as the city), this event will take place beginning at 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31. Tickets to the event will start at $25, which includes $20 in Baldwin Park Bucks to spend at participating restaurants. Each participant will get a wristband that will enable the wearer to benefit from a special menu in participating restaurants and bars. Before midnight, all participants with wristbands will be able to enter a VIP viewing area for the countdown, fireworks and a glass of sparkling cider, along with New Year’s Eve beads, hats, tiaras, noise makers, etc. After midnight, participants can return to the restaurants and bars to enjoy the rest of the night until the local venues close. Visit BaldwinParkEvents. com for up to date information about this event. Oh, another Superman note. The actress who played Lois Lane commented that for most of the series she and the actor playing Jimmy Olson spent their time seated, tied up, or waiting for a bomb to go off. Things were much simpler then.
New Years Eve is a great celebration that everyone can enjoy. Our event will bring together the Baldwin Park community and other participants to enjoy a fun, all-ages event in the Village Center by Lake Baldwin.”

THOSE DARN SIGNS We’ve recently determined that our documents don’t give the ROA the authority to remove signage (bootleg signs) from the medians within and easement or right-of-way areas along roadways in Baldwin Park. Consequently, if you see such signs (other than political signs up 40 days before an election and two days after an election) you want removed, you may use the Baldwin Park app to discreetly report such signage directly to the city of Orlando Code Enforcement Department that can and will pick up such signage. You can download the app by going to the Apple Store or Google Play and search for Baldwin Park Services. Once you’ve downloaded the app, there are a lot of other features you may find useful.

PARTNERS IN BUSINESS,
PARTNERS IN LIFE Husband-and-wife duo Fred Thimm and Carey Ferrante both bring a unique business to the Orlando area. TIM FREED ASSOCIATE EDITOR
A
husband-and-wife duo in Baldwin Park have no lack of entrepreneurial spirit. In fact, it’s part of what brought them together. Residents Fred Thimm and Carey Ferrante each run their own unique businesses — a reflection of their individual passions and willingness to support each other’s dreams. Thimm opened a seafood restaurant in March — Reel Fish Coastal Kitchen and Bar at 1234 N. Orange Ave. in Winter Park. The eatery takes cues from the popular fish camp restaurants that have sat along Florida’s coast for decades. The Orlando area may be landlocked in the center of Florida, but that doesn’t mean people aren’t looking for tasty seafood, Thimm says. “I just became aware of the fact that Orlando really didn’t consider itself a coastal community, so it was really hard to find a really authentic southern coastal experience in Orlando,” Thimm says. “If this was Baltimore or Boston or wherever, the 40 miles or 50 miles to the ocean doesn’t seem to be much of

a barrier. We thought, ‘Let’s create a southern coastal restaurant in Orlando and see if we can procure the same great seafood that you get in Fernandina Beach, Jacksonville, Jupiter or Sarasota.’” Reel Fish has a real big local selection — from hogfish to rainbow trout to Atlantic salmon. The restaurant has a raw bar that includes a variety of shrimp and oysters, and the menu includes a ceviche of local Florida fish every day. “Typically in Orlando you’ll see red snapper or cobia and maybe grouper, but there’s another two dozen species of Florida fish that are amazing that people — unless they’re on the coast or on vacation — they never get to experience,” Thimm says. “We try to bring all that stuff in.”
BLUE BETTY BOUTIQUE
Working alongside Thimm is his wife, Carey Ferrante, who does everything from delivering food to bussing tables. She’s always supporting the restaurant, but Ferrante has a business of her own — and its based out of a 1956 Fleetwood mobile home. Ferrante founded her business, Blue Betty Boutique in 2010 in Nashville. It offers a range of clothing and accessories with a 1970s vintage Bohemian flair. An old trailer with a fresh coat of baby blue paint serves as a dressing room, while a selection of handmade merchandise sits outside under canopies. “I was inspired by a woman there who had a mobile boutique at a vintage show,” Ferrante says. “I thought, ‘Wow, that’s cool. of investing in bricks and mortar, let’s bring the business to the people instead of having to wait for the business.’ That was kind of the idea.” Ferrante has taken her trailer all over the Southeast United States — setting up her boutique in vintage market shows in Savannah, Charleston and Atlanta. It’s already developed a cult following, she says. “People are by and large getting away from department store shopping,” Ferrante says. “They’re shopping online, but I think what they really want is they want unique styles that wear well, wear easily and are different — something that you’re not going to see on your friend when you go to a party. We take old lace and pieces of remnants from the past and sew them onto more relevant garments and make unique pieces.”
“
Now we both own businesses and we’ve really sunk some roots here. It’s about time for both of us to get a local area code. … I don’t think we’re going anywhere anytime soon.” — FRED THIMM

PERFECT MATCH
Thimm and Ferrante first met back in their college days in New York. They both eventually went their separate ways but reunited almost exactly 25 years later, when they found each other on LinkedIn in 2009. A platform for business networking instead rekindled a relationship. The two started dating and they moved to Baldwin Park, as Thimm was working a corporate job for Hard Rock Cafe at the time. They married three years ago. Thimm chose to pursue his own restaurant while Ferrante continues to run her boutique — she also opened a store with two partners in College Park call Annabelle & Company. The couple have been building each other’s businesses ever since. Ferrante even designed the
bartender and hostess uniforms at Reel Fish — which sometimes leads customers back to the boutique. Thimm will accompany his wife to the various market shows as well and help her set up shop. Thimm and Ferrante hope to keep their businesses going strong together in the Orlando area. “I have a 202 area code going back to when I lived in Washington, D.C., 11 years ago,” Thimm says. “In the 11 years since I left D.C., I’ve had many leadership roles in the industry, so it never seemed worthwhile to get my phone number changed. “Now we both own businesses and we’ve really sunk some roots here,” he says. “It’s about time for both of us to get a local area code. … I don’t think we’re going anywhere anytime soon.”

Q:
Ask the Dentist Why is Fluoride important?
Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in all water sources. Flouride helps protect tooth enamel from the acid attacks of plaque and sugars in the mouth that cause cavities. It attracts other minerals and strengthens tooth enamel by repairing the weakened enamel before cavities form. Fluoride can prevent cavities in both children and adults. In short, flouride is a naturally occuring mineral, that when used in conjuction with good oral hygiene habits, can reduce cavities by at least 25% and will help create lifetime dental health.

VISITING RELATIVES? ORLANDO HAS AN APP FOR THAT! Ya gotta love ’em, and you knew — even before moving to Orlando — that “extended” family suddenly would get “closer” once you moved to the City Beautiful. But we draw the line when expected to be chauffeur, concierge and tour guide for their vacation. Now the folks at VisitOrlando have relieved us of those responsibilities, as it announced Orlando is the first city in the country to have its own app. Now, the in-laws can get personalized recommendations, maps and discounted tickets along with answers to when Disney opens and Universal closes — available on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

‘SONGS OF THE SEASON’ 6 P.M. DEC. 2. To celebrate the season, the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, Full Sail University and Rollins College come together to present “Songs of the Season,” a free holiday concert to be performed on the Dr. Phillips Center’s Seneff Arts Plaza. The concert will offer 80 vocalists and 28 instrumentalists from Rollins College, an appearance by Dr. Phillips Center’s performance group, Docs & Dellas — all supported by Full Sail’s state-of-the-art music production capabilities. The concert is a gift from the three partners to bring the community together with seasonal music from around the world. Visit drphillipscenter.org. ‘BIG BAND HOLIDAYS’ DEC. 3. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra brings together 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players today. Led by Wynton Marsalis, JLCO spreads holiday cheer on its national big-band tours with soulful renditions of holiday classics, improvisation and storytelling. They bring out the magic in Count Basie’s “Jingle Bells,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and Billie Holiday’s “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm.” Jazz royalty Catherine Russell joins as special guest vocalist, and she is joined by fellow vocalist Kenny Washington. Allow this uplifting performance to create memories for you and your family that will last throughout the year. Visit drphillipscenter.org. AN EVENING WITH DAVIS GAINES DEC. 6. Prepare for an amazing evening, when Los Angeles’ longestrunning Phantom from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” thrills the audience with his rich baritone and winning smile. Fresh from his brilliant portrayal of Don Quixote in “Man of La Mancha”

UNIVERSAL ORLANDO’S HOLIDAY WORLD OF HARRY POTTER THROUGH JAN 6, 2018. No muggles allowed! At Universal Studios, London is transformed with special décor and lighting, holiday treats and drinks, and “buskers” singing holiday favorites along with Celestina Warbeck and the Banshees in pop-up performances. Hogsmeade’s shops are decorated, and even the Frog Choir has prepared a special show. Then, as the stars begin to shine, Hogwarts Castle becomes the widest screen ever for the spectacular “mapped projection technology” of all the holiday-related clips from Harry’s movies. Included in park admission. Visit universalorlando.com.
at Orlando Shakespeare Theater, our own Broadway star and Orlando native brings his evening of the “Best of Broadway” for a special concert benefiting hunger relief and the homeless. In addition to performing the title role in “The Phantom of the Opera” more than 2,000 times on Broadway, in Los Angeles and in San Francisco, Gaines’ believes in giving back to his hometown. We are honored to have his support. Presented by Christian Service Center of Central Florida. Visit ChristianServiceCenter.org. ‘AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS’ Dec. 9 and 10. Presented in English, Gian Carlo Menotti’s charming story, inspired by the journey of the Three Kings, is an Opera Orlando holiday tradition. “Amahl and the Night Visitors” was commissioned for television by NBC and was broadcast live on Dec. 24, 1951, as the debut production of the Hallmark Hall of Fame. This was first opera composed for television in America, and 2017 sees Opera
Orlando offer a brand new, visually stunning production, designed and directed by Grant Preisser. Music Director Robin Jensen will conduct musicians from the Orlando Philharmonic. Visit drphillipscenter.org. ‘THE BOOK OF MORMON’ Dec. 12 to 17. The Tony Awardwinning “Book of Mormon,” is back to satirize the Mormon religion with script, lyrics and music by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone. Those familiar sounding names are best known for creating “South Park,” so be warned as to what Parker and Stone have done with a formalized religion. The zealous young missionaries attempt to share the “scripture” with the inhabitants of a Ugandan village, but they are challenged by locals more concerned with AIDS, famine and oppression from the local warlord. There is humor here, but it comes at its own pace to audience members getting over the shock of several of the songs in Act One. It’s a two-act show, so there must be a savior somewhere. CENTRAL FLORIDA BALLET’S NUTCRACKER 2017 2 p.m. Dec. 16; 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 17. Merging the classic fairytale with more pyrotechnics than any seen in any ballet before (or since), the Central Florida Ballet will present three performances of their renowned Nutcracker at the Orange County Convention Center. New this season, Director Vasile Petrutiu announced custom built sets from Russia. “They are beautifully crafted,” he said, “handpainted by artists in traditional ballet style.” For tickets, visit centralfloridaballet.com. ‘THE NUTCRACKER’ AND ‘THE NUTCRACKER FAMILY SHOW’ Dec. 21 to 24. The Orlando Ballet’s magical journey to a fantasy world promises the kind of performance that makes little girls wish to become ballerinas. Including a performance on Christmas Eve, the on-stage Christmas Eve party shows how a gift from her godfather helps Clara grow in courage, poise, and perhaps — the stirrings of
“first love.” Everyone can enjoy falling snow and candy canes at this holiday classic including a one-hour performance for young audiences (11 a.m. Dec. 23) with activities for children in the lobby before the show. Visit orlandoballet.org or drphillipscenter.org. ‘SCHOOL OF ROCK: THE MUSICAL’ Dec. 26 to 31. Imagine — decades after Andrew Lloyd Webber’s elegantly romantic “Phantom of the Opera,” his new musical is based on the scruffy hit movie, “School of Rock.” And like the movie, this funny musical follows Dewey Finn, a wannabe rock star (posing as a substitute teacher) who turns a class of straight-A students into a mind-blowing rock band. This rebelliously, upbeat musical features 14 new songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber; all the original songs from the movie; and musical theater’s first kids rock band playing their instruments live. Fists in the air for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new “feel-good” musical. Visit drphillipscenter.org.

CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK 6:15 p.m. Dec. 7. For 39 years, the Morse Museum of American Art and (joined later by) the city of Winter Park have officially “kicked off” the season by presenting Christmas in the Park in Winter Park. The joyfully free outdoor event begins at 6:15 p.m., when the lights are turned up on nine-century-old Tiffany leaded-glass windows and Central Park is transformed into a concert hall for the 160-voice Bach Festival Choir. Hugh and Jeannette McKean, who built the Morse Museum’s collection, began Christmas in the Park to share a part of their collection with the public. Included this season is Tiffany Studios’ Christmas Eve window, circa 1902. Visit morsemuseum.org.

elcome to a place where princesses enjoy the finer things in life. Dressed in their most elegant dresses, these pint-sized figures of royalty seat themselves at tables featuring fine china, colorful flowers, and bright pink napkins. A sparkling glass chandelier hangs above the table, lighting the room, as the children sit alongside one another and a few Disney princesses such as Rapunzel and Belle, who are dressed in their ball gowns — looking to enjoy a spot of tea. It’s a fantastical setting that could easily play out in Cinderella’s castle, but it’s actually happening right in Baldwin Park at Teacups and Tiaras Orlando. “All the little girls are just so beautiful and dressed up and excited, and we are just as excited as they are,” says owner Melanie Fussell, laughing. “We just have so much fun doing these parties, because it’s just all

happy, and it’s all fun and friendly.” Located at 1615 Prospect Ave., Teacups and Tiaras has become a fun place for parents around the area who are looking to make their daughters feel like princesses — or in some cases, ballerinas. Fussell, along with help from her trusty husband, David, provides a variety of themes for the parties held at the Teacups and Tiaras facility, including ballerina parties, garden parties, and for some of the older girls, a diamonds and pearls party — think in terms of the iconic style of Audrey Hepburn. But of all the themes offered, there is no doubt to which is the most popular — it’s the princess party. As the kids arrive, Disney princesses greet them before the young princesses dive into an afternoon of fun activities. The girls seat themselves in front of frilly vanities with large mirrors, as local high-school girls help them with nail painting and makeup. “The mom’s just go crazy taking pictures of them getting their little up-dos and tiaras in,” Fussell says. “So we get them all ready with their makeup and nails, and then we get them decked out in all kinds of jewelry — pearl jewelry and long gloves, and tiaras — and we do a fashion show and the mother’s just love it.” Although fun is a huge part of the tea-party experience, there is also a teaching aspect. Fussell, a self-described “Southern lady from North Carolina,” is a Rocky Mount

native who grew up on the old ideals of southern hospitality and taste. That’s why etiquette lessons also pop up during the tea party aspect of the afternoon. The girls are taught how to take the napkin out of the ring, shake it and place it in their lap. They also learn how to properly hold a teacup and saucer. It’s those small things at the table, among other things, that helps establish strong and proper character in young girls, Fussell says. “Even though the girls are little … it sort of brings a little touch of civility and they’re learning manners, and they’re learning to hold their head up when they walk,” Fussell says. “It’s just kind of raising the bar for them socially and culturally. But mainly, it’s just good pure fun.” Being able to help teach kids, while taking in a good cup of tea, is a combination that helped fuel a passion for hosting tea parties that started 25 years ago back home in North Carolina — where Fussell threw tea parties for friends and family. The retired elementary school teacher of 20 years put the tea parties on the back burner a bit, but the move to Baldwin Park five years ago reignited that old flame. Fussell began working with the Baldwin Park Kid’s Club, throwing
some special events for the group. From there, the concept of tea parties exploded as parents of children participating in the club began asking about possibly doing more parties. Since those early days, Fussell’s Teacups and Tiaras has taken off, and there is no looking back as she continues to make every little girl in Baldwin Park feel like a princess. “I just feel like I’ve created a really beautiful place for them to come, and it’s just all about creating happy memories for a special time and a special day in their life for them to remember,” Fussell says. “And it’s just a gorgeous place for the moms to take photos and have keepsakes of the fun and the friends.”

Mindful
message Sandra Stanford is a licensed mental-health counselor at Charis Counseling Center LLC, in Baldwin Park. TROY HERRING ASSOCIATE EDITOR
O
f all the health topics discussed by medical professionals and everyday people, mental health is one of the most frightening. For many, dealing with issues ranging from anxiety to PTSD to depression is a daily struggle that, if left untreated, can affect many aspects in an individual’s life. Along with actual mental-health issues comes the social stigmas that often deter people from seeking the professional help that they need. Sandra Stanford, a licensed mental-health counselor at Charis Counseling Center LLC, has encountered these issues many times since she began her counseling career five years ago. “It’s not (stigmatized) as much as it use to be, but what I know is that it is terrifying when you feel like you need to get that professional help, because it’s a financial investment,” she says. “Also, it’s coming face-toface to whatever is driving you into counseling — so I think it’s good to talk about it.” Stanford says one of the most common questions is how to recognize the signs of possible mental illness — which comes in many

shapes and forms. Although each case ranges depending on the individual and their circumstances, many side effects include issues such as loss of appetite, insomnia and increased heartbeat. Most people don’t realize cases of anxiety and depression go beyond unhealthy thoughts — they affect everything. “Your whole body is affected — it’s not just your thoughts but even your body can physically react to anxiety or depression,” Stanford says. “So if you have a racing heart that is an indication of some anxiety kicking in.”
You also can unintentionally fuel side effects without even realizing it, Stanford says. Factors such as caffeine intake and lack of sleep can help drive the physical effects of mental health issues, such as a racing heart, causing things to spiral downward. Although participating in counseling is an important go-to with anyone seeking help for his or her mental-health issues, keeping up one’s mental health on an everyday basis — regardless of having an issue like anxiety or depression — is a key to living a happier life, Stanford says.
1
LOOK AT YOUR SCHEDULE. Stanford says people often don’t take the necessary time to make room in their busy lives for the things they enjoy the most. Although work is often a necessity, people can get overwhelmed when their schedule becomes work heavy. “If you look at your schedule, and say you highlighted things in different colors and you see too much yellow for work and not enough green for self care, then look at rearranging your schedule for more self care,” Stanford says.
2
SELF-CARE. It’s easy for people to get caught up in their hectic schedule. “We tend to put ourselves to the side, not realizing that when we put ourselves to the side it negatively affects us and the people around us,” Stanford says. “Because if I’m working way too
much, I don’t get enough family time, and I can also get irritable, grumpy and out of sorts.” The ultimate key to solving the issue is by trying to best balance out our schedule, and make time for the things that make us happy — which in turn actually boosts our mental health.
3
HAVE A SUPPORT SYSTEM IN PLACE. You’re around people just about every day of your life in some way or another, but that doesn’t mean you don’t feel alone anymore. Having people in your life who care for you is a vital step in keeping up positive mental health. “Seventy percent of Americans feel lonely, so you could be in a room of 100 people and still feel lonely,” Stanford says. “So it’s important to say, ‘I need people in my life who get me; I need people in my life to encourage me; I need people I can go play with.’ If you see yourself isolating figure out why, but be intentional about getting a support system —
whether it be at church, whether it be at a book club — try to get a support system around you.”
4
YOUR THOUGHTS. One step people may often overlook is their own thoughts and how they perceive themselves, Stanford says. Critical thoughts can act as fuel for issues such as anxiety and depression. The first step, Stanford says, is to recognize and then address the negativity. Stanford assigns a simple, yet difficult homework assignment.
5
PSYCHO-EDUCATION. Of all the means of learning to better positive mental health, educating yourself may be the simplest and most effective. “The more you can understand something — then it can calm you down, because you go, ‘Oh, I’m not alone in this,’ so you feel a little more normal in that area,” Stanford says. “It’s really important to educate yourself.”

Students in Alison Hannon’s digital video production class blended technology and health education as they each created videos that captured the Move60 challenge — an initiative by Healthy Central Florida that encourages people to get active. The challenge asked the community to do a physical activity each day through the months of October and November. Participants tracked

their progress by logging it online and using Fitbit devices. Individuals, businesses, churches, schools and organizations took part and competed for prizes, such as a three-month membership to RDV Sportsplex, a $100 Track Shack gift card, a catered lunch, and money toward their church or school. The idea of tracking steps and competing against other teams gets the children excited about taking part, Glenridge Assistant Principal Diane Carter says. The school had 114 volunteers — 30 faculty and 84 students — participate in the challenge. “It’s very motivating,” she says. “Instead of just kind of thinking

about, ‘Maybe I should walk more often,’ you have this challenge for the next 60 days where, ‘I’m going to do it every day and I’m going to track whether I’m really walking or am I fooling myself.’ You get individual awareness, which has been very motivating for me.” Glenridge’s digital video production class has taken advantage of this challenge, capturing their activities on video and producing them into short video projects, Hannon says. Students have done everything from horseback riding to paddleboarding to playing basketball. The clips have been posted on the Glenridge Middle School Facebook page for all to see. Each student was assigned a number for one of the 60 days and asked to incorporate that into the video — whether it was a jersey number or a flag nearby. “I’m always looking for ways to provide real-life projects for our video students — instead of just sitting in here and editing and their videos going nowhere,” Hannon says. “It was a chance for my video students to create something that showcased them being active. They really did it in such creative ways.” Among the students in the video class was Jaxsen Jones, 13, who continued on page 36

Bennett Roberts, 13, decided to shoot some hoops for his video. The beat of catchy electronic music kicks in while a clip shows Roberts hitting a few jump shots in his driveway. “I had a lot of fun with it,” Roberts says. “I’ve gotten much better from shooting around. I do this about everyday for 15 to 30 minutes. It helps me get better.” Glenridge tackled the Move60 challenge last year for the first time, earning the top spot among middle schools with the most participants and winning $400 toward the its digital video production class.

About 30 faculty members at Glenridge Middle School participated in Move60 through October and November.
But it isn’t just Move60 that’s keeping Glenridge students active. The PE class has students use an app called Couch to 5K, where the students walk through Blue Jacket Park in increments three days a
week until they can walk a 5K. “If you can get six or seven of these kids in middle school to get the habit of a healthy lifestyle,” Carter says. “If you do it 60 days its going to be engrained.”

Home organization. For some, these are dirty words, a topic to be avoided. Best not to discuss the looming pile of old toys and clothes in the garage. Maybe if we don’t talk about it, it will just go away — slowly absorbing into the concrete never to be seen again. Although it is unlikely that the clutter in our homes will spontaneously evaporate, it is likely that we all have some clutter and disorganized spaces in our homes. Whether it’s a fridge populated with items past their expiration date or a closet hosting a selection of clothes from the ’90s (be honest, you’re not going to wear that velvet crop top again), we all have opportunities to add some organization to our homes. Although the thought of decluttering may not be appealing to some, the benefits of doing so are indisputable. The less time you spend pondering where to find your measuring tape or homeowners insurance policy, the more time you have to do, well, whatever you want. I’m a firm believer that a home is simply happier when things both have a place and are put there regularly. And if you are intent on selling your home anytime soon, you would be well advised to eliminate any visual noise (read: clutter!) post haste. Here are a few top-notch suggestions on how to organize your space with help from professional organizer Meg Wittman, of Neat Method Orlando.
1
A great place to start your organizing is the kitchen. It’s the place in your home everyone congregates to, and your family may spend a good portion of their home time in this room. By organizing this space you can save time and probably money. Surely, I’m not the only
38
BALDWIN PARK LIVING | DECEMBER
one to buy an item or a spice for a recipe only to discover later I already had it buried in the back of my fridge or in a cabinet. Wittman suggests homeowners make note of what they have. Do you have an abundance of a certain item, or items you simply don’t use and aren’t likely to? Time to get rid of what you don’t need, use or have a surplus of. Fill that space with something you will use, or don’t. Less can definitely be more here. Another good rule of thumb is to evaluate the items you have in your pantry twice per year. Are there expired baking mixes or super old spices? Toss them and make a mental note not to repeat the cycle of purchasing these things again unless you really plan to use them. Take a good look at your fridge. Many of us just reorganized our fridge courtesy of hurricane Irma, but if you haven’t, now is the time. Set up your space to accommodate how you live and the items you store there regularly. Make sure all items are easy to see. It’s a simple tip but so helpful: If you can clearly see what you have in your fridge you wont waste money buying duplicate items. A cleaner, more organized kitchen is a healthier and happier place to be.
2
Another common corridor of clutter is the closet. Any closet can become overrun with items but the main culprit is the master bedroom closet. So often, we hold on to old, illfitting or simply unworn clothes. Wittman makes the point that at the start or the year you can really evaluate what clothing items you have or have not worn in the past twelve months. With apps such as Let Go and just about every town having a garage sale page on Facebook, it
is quite easy to give unused or unwanted clothing to someone who might really need or want it. Another rule of thumb Wittman follows is “one in one out.” Buying a hot new party dress? Donate or sell one of your existing dresses. This might be harder to adhere to, but even if you stick to every other item, you can maintain your sense of closet order. Speaking of order, try hanging like items together and in color coordination. You can save valuable time in the morning not ever having to wonder where that green sweater is hiding.
3
On to the final frontier of disorganization, the garage. I love my garage. I often show homes that have garages being used solely for storage purposes. I have to say I could never sacrifice my garage to be used only for storage, but to each their own. Whether your garage houses your belongings, car or both, shelving is the major key. The more shelves, the better, and don’t forget to use weather-proof storage containers, because it is unlikely your garage has A/C. Keep things easily accessible with clear containers and labels. Never dread taking down and putting away your holiday décor again by following these essential pieces of advice. Whether you plan to sell your home or stay there forever, organization enables you to make better use of your time as well as enjoy your space more. Imagine, a home free of clutter, a place you never have to pick up before our guests arrive. Take a little time to set things up and maintain them. And if you don’t have the time or desire to do it yourself, you can always hire an organizer to do it for you.

“I’m here to help YOU!”
“Charles and I take great pleasure in highly recommending our outstanding realtor, Kimberley Gernert. When we decided to sell our home, there was no question who we would choose to help us. Kimberley was extremely diligent, energetic and professional. She was in constant contact, guiding us through every step of selling our home. As a result of her hard work we had 3 offers in the first three days on the market and our home sold above our asking price! Kimberley’s personal touch didn’t end there. She helped us find an apartment and offered to assist with our move. She made what could have been a difficult transition very easy. We could not have done it without her. Charles and I would not consider anyone else when selling a home. She is simply the best!” Charles and Jane Brandon

TAX TALK
Beware of tax scams T
here are many so-called tax resolution firms out there that promise anything to get you to part with your money. You’ve probably seen them hawking their wares on late night infomercials telling you they can get the IRS to accept pennies on the dollar in settlement of your tax debt. If you have been approached by one of these outfits (and you will be), don’t hire them if they have done any one of the following:

n Tried to frighten you. Anyone who tells you that if you don’t immediately hire them, the IRS will arrest you or initiate a criminal prosecution against you is probably lying through his teeth. A reputable tax adviser will tell you the truth about your tax situation but will never tell you that if you don’t pay them you’ll go to jail.

PILGRIMS & INDIANS Baldwin Park families gathered at High Park for some tasty Thanksgiving treats Friday, Nov. 10. The Pilgrims and Indians event, held by the Baldwin Park Kids Club, offered homemade treats and juice packs for kids to snack on before running to play on the playground. Children constructed tiny turkeys with crafts materials and took them home when the day’s activities were done.
