temperatures in the 80s — often nearing record highs — November and December have had Central Floridians getting antsy for cooler days that feel typical to the season. But local blueberry bushes, which are in season in Florida from April to May, don’t mind the heat. In fact, they’re thriving. “(The plants) had a fall crop because they’re confused about what to do with all the heat,” said Scott West, a coowner of Tom West Blueberries in Ocoee. “They’re putting out new growth, which normally doesn’t happen either.” West said he has never seen this happen in his lifetime. If there is a sudden cold snap, the Tom West team will protect the plants with a special irrigation process. Volumes in the spring might be lower than usual because the fruit started early, but the extra-long season could help make up for it. “We’re going to try to do it all the way through winter,” Scott said. Although there was an El Niño cycle this year, climate scientists do not think it was

WHAT ABOUT STRAWBERRIES?
The high temperatures have also affected strawberry crops farther west near Plant City, the crop’s Florida hub. The yield typically harvested in late December isn’t expected to be available until mid-January, and some major growers have had supply gaps.

New Independence Parkway extension continuing soon Developers will lengthen the road as they continue building near Avalon and McKinney roads. ZAK KERR STAFF WRITER HORIZON WEST
The Boyd Development Corporation plans to continue its development of Horizon West with a parcel at the southwest corner of the intersection of McKinney and Avalon roads, based on an Orange County community meeting Dec. 10 at Bridgwater Middle School. Attorney Jim Willard, the applicant who presented on behalf of the Boyd Development Corporation, said the planned extension of New Independence Parkway crosses this parcel. Officials will
continue to study the parkway, which ultimately will connect to U.S. 27 in Lake County, he said. That would mean at least four more miles for New Independence Parkway to extend, with construction about a year away, he said. “It’s not long until commercial activity moves west of (State Road) 429 and Avalon (Road),” he said. District 1 Orange County Commissioner S. Scott Boyd said the Central Florida Expressway Authority — of which he is the vice chairman — also would be
examining its role in connecting New Independence Parkway to U.S. 27. As for the plat at hand, the developer proposal is to change the future land use of about 10.05 gross acres at 17450 McKinney Road from urban residential and open space to retail wholesale. With that change, the applicant would like to construct about 40,000 square feet of retail space. This would complement Boyd Development Corporation’s development of the Horizon West Town Center along present-day New Independence Parkway, near its State Road 429 interchanges. Contact Zak Kerr at zkerr@orangeobserver.com.
WHAT’S NEXT Following the Dec. 10 community meeting, this proposal now will move forward with a series of hearings at the Orange County Commission. All hearings will be held in the County Commission Chambers, 201 S. Rosalind Ave. Hearing dates are tentative and are subject to change.

View from above COMSTOCK’S CRASHES In every crash, Comstock learned a lesson. Here are a few important ones. n Free fall. Comstock was in his backyard, flying the drone at night. He was eager to get it up in the air and film some nearby fireworks. When he put the battery in the drone, it didn’t click in all the way. When the drone was at 400 feet, the battery came loose, and the drone fell from the sky. Lesson: Make sure your drone is ready to fly before you get it in the air. n Magnetic crash. During a fly over the blueberry fields, Comstock took off about 25 feet from some farm equipment. The metal from the farm equipment threw off the compass of the drone, and the drone returned quickly to the ground. “I had no control over it,” Comstock said. Lesson: Stay 25 to 50 feet away from metal. n Wrong propeller. Comstock once used the wrong propeller on his drone, after receiving incorrect information that it didn’t matter which propeller he used. The drone ended up hitting a tree. Lesson: It matters which propeller you use.
Scott West, Stacy Williams, Milton West and Kevin Laird are some of the faces behind the family operation.
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
Comstock was fascinated. “I got to see some things that I grew up with that I didn’t even know were there,” he said. “For me, that was an epiphany.” Comstock flew radio-controlled planes for about 25 years and always wished there was a way to stop the plane mid-air and take a photograph. He began to research drones and then ordered one about two years ago. Since that time, the Ocoee resident and owner of the Winter Garden-based Southwest Property Management has had similar experiences locally. He flew his drone to get an upclose look at the Angel Moroni, which adorns the top of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints at 9000 Windy Ridge Road in Windermere. One day, he found a spot in a parking lot near the empty Majesty building in Altamonte Springs. He was able to fly over the building without flying over people. “That is magnificent,” he said. “When you shoot the building and you’re starting at the bottom — and it’s a construction site and there’s only one guard there, so I wasn’t near any people — and you go up and you look at the glass, you can’t see that driving on I-4.” The Tom West blueberry farm in Ocoee allowed Comstock on its property to take some footage of the property. Comstock was able
RULES OF THE SKY n Stay at 400 feet or below. n Don’t fly over people or moving vehicles. n Stay at least 25 feet away from people or other property. n Contact airports before flying within five miles. For more information, visit knowbeforeyoufly.org/forrecreational-users.
to show the farmer exactly what his farm looks like from the air. LEARNING TO FLY
Drones are often marketed as “fly out of the box.” Although that is true, Comstock has another perspective. “You can also crash it out of the box,” he said. Since he started flying drones, Comstock has been through six drones — meaning he has crashed drones several times. Some of these crashes caused him to need to purchase a new one. He chalks all of his crashes up to pilot error. He wishes he would have purchased a drone simulator to practice with on his computer before he flew it straight out of the box. Now, before he flies the drone, he goes through some steps to make sure the drone is ready to be in the air. First, he checks to make sure the batteries are fresh and the device is charged. Then he looks at his surroundings to make sure there are no telephone wires he might crash into. Next, he checks to make sure the pro-
pellers are tight and secure. He also calibrates the compass away from metal. He also recommends finding the blog for the drone being flown. There, drone users can read up on tips of how to operate the drone and learn from the mistakes of others.

“I DON’T APPROVE OF YOU SPYING ON ME”
Public perception of drones sometimes is dominated with stories of people using them to spy or do other unsavory activities. Comstock is frustrated that the perception of drones is based on a few people who make poor decisions. As these stories have become more public, Comstock has been approached by a few people who asked if he was spying on them. Comstock doesn’t fly over people, but if he is in a park with other people, they often assume the worst. Typically, Comstock will show them the photos he took, and the people normally are impressed when they see how truly small they look in the photo, if they even show up at all. “The drone, when it’s up too high, people look like ants,” Comstock said. Comstock enjoys filming the unusual. He has planned a trip to the Turks and Caicos, where he will stay aboard a ship. He plans to fly the drone off the ship to get footage of the ocean. FITNESS TIPS:

Stoneybrook Family Medicine
Regular physical activity helps to improve your overall health and decreases your risk for many chronic diseases. Adults need at least: 2 hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes) per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity such as brisk walking and full body muscle-strengthening activities like weight lifting 2 or more days a week. 150 minutes sounds like a lot of time, but that’s about the same amount of time you might spend watching a movie. The good news is that you don’t have to do it all at once. 10 minutes at a time is fine. It’s about what works best for you. More time equals more health benefits. Moderateintensity aerobic activity means you’re working hard enough to raise your heart rate and break a sweat. For most people, light daily activities such as shopping, cooking, or doing the laundry doesn’t count because your body isn’t working to get your heart rate up. NUTRITION TIPS:
Sponsored by
Stoneybrook Family Medicine
A healthy lifestyle involves many choices. Among these choices is the selection of a balanced diet and a healthy eating plan. A healthy eating plan emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free milk products. It includes lean meats such as poultry and fish. It is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt and added sugars. It is important to stay within your daily calorie needs, which will vary from 1800 to 2000 calories per day based on your weight goals.
When attempting to lose weight, your nutrition plan may need to change a little, as you must use up more calories than you take in. One pound equals 3,500 calories, so you would need to reduce your caloric intake by 500 -1000 calories per day to lose about 1 to 2 pounds per week. PAID ADVERTISEMENTS

Did you know? Everyone should have an annual physical exam by their primary care doctor. These visits can help prevent illnesses, diseases, and other health problems, or detect problems at an early stage when treatment is likely to work best. Getting recommended preventive services and making healthy lifestyle choices are key steps to good health. During these visits, you may talk about cancer screenings, vaccinations (as adults need vaccines too), testing for common chronic diseases, screening for infectious diseases, and performing risk assessments. An annual physical is also a good time to discuss ways to improve your overall health through diet, exercise, weight loss, and smoking cessation. Some common cancer screenings for adults include: • PAP smear every 3-5 years for women 21 and older • Colonoscopy for everyone aged 50 and up. • Mammogram every 1-2 years beginning at age 40-50 - Dr. Marianna Sisk, DO and Dr. Kristin Steffes, MD Stoneybrook Family Medicine

The Swindle family, owners of West Orange Roofing, have served the families of Central Florida for thirty-seven years. Bobby Swindle, Sr, founded the company in 1978 and it’s now owned by his son, Bobby Swindle, Jr. and Bobby’s wife, Kendra. They recently sat down to discuss their business: Q: How do you know when it’s time to replace your roof? A: If you see stains on your ceiling or a trickle of water down your wall, it’s time to call a roofer. Another sign is if your shingles move in the wind, or you find pieces of them in your yard. Q: How long does a new roof generally last? A: Even when you use high-quality material, Florida’s hot sun and extreme weather will lead the average homeowner to re-roof every fourteen years or so. Q:What should I expect from a roofing company?

Putting together an edition like this one — our annual Year in Sports — has a way of lending some perspective. When looking at the year in its totality, it’s hard to argue that this wasn’t a pretty great year to cover youth and high-school sports in West Orange County. It’s a reminder that, for all the nights and weekends that a sports reporter must work (see, most of them), it’s still a pretty sweet gig. That is especially true working here, in this community, in particular. Consider this: between the West Orange Times & Observer and our sister publication, the Windermere Observer, our sports staff has covered state (one varsity, one youth) and national champion teams (one football, one softball). We had state runner-ups, regional champions and district champions galore. Even in middle-school competition, we had several champions, including SunRidge boys and girls soccer, Bridgewater girls volleyball, Southwest boys basketball, Windermere Prep football and a clean sweep by Holy Family Catholic’s boys teams within the Diocese of Orlando’s CYS Championships. We covered a team that spent several weeks ranked as the No. 1 varsity baseball program in the country (Olympia). We wrote about local heroes getting called up to play for storied professional baseball franchises such as the New York Yankees and the Atlanta Braves. In youth football, the Bulldogs and the Cardinals made the city of Ocoee doubly proud by placing first and third at national tournaments, respectively. Consider that, for a moment: There is enough young football talent in and around Ocoee that it literally had two of the best youth football teams in the nation. All of this isn’t even to mention some of the individual achievements, including national champion divers and state champion runners, among other things. You see, in truth, it’s the people within the West and Southwest Orange sports communities — the coaches, players, supporters and volunteers — who make this job worth doing. But the fact that we just so happen to cover teams and individuals that are competitive and respected on a regional, state and, often, national level? That’s just one of the perks.

Stories we liked LOCALS GET THE CALL
In the business of hyper-local news, it’s not often a community publication gets to cover a hometown hero getting the call up from the minor leagues to play in Major League Baseball. During the summer of 2015, that very thing happened for the coverage area — twice. The two call-ups of Winter Garden natives happened within a month of one another. First, West Orange High alum Mason Williams got the call from Triple-A on June 11 to don the pinstripes of the New York Yankees. Williams debuted against the Baltimore Orioles a day later, homering in his second big-league at-bat. Then, Jake Brigham — a homeschooled high-schooler who played for CFCA in varsity competition — got the call up for the Atlanta Braves on June 27. Although Williams was 23 years old at the time of his debut, Brigham — who had put in more than his fair share of time in the minor leagues in the course of nine seasons — was 27. In his first action on June 30, Brigham tossed three scoreless innings. Neither player concluded the season in the big leagues.
SENIOR DUO LEADS BANNER SEASON
The Ocoee High boys basketball team had its best season to date in 2014-2015, concluding the year with a program-best 21 wins and a record 10-game winning streak that ended in late January. Leading the way was a duo of 2015 graduates for the Knights in Grant Riller and Vaughn McCall. The senior duo was instrumental to Ocoee’s success, with Riller bearing the brunt of the scoring load and McCall emerging as the floor general. Riller, who was voted the Orange/Osceola Counties Player of the Year, averaged 28.1 points per game — a feat that was highlighted by a 53-point performance against Leesburg in late December 2014 (another school record). He was arguably the best player in all of Central Florida that season. McCall averaged 14.6 points per game to pair with 3.5 assists per contest. Riller missed his freshman season at College of Charleston because of an injury, and McCall is averaging 11.9 points per game as a freshman at Flagler College.
There was no shortage of great sports stories to tell in West Orange in 2015. Here are just a few of our favorites.
between Notre Dame and Miami, Dexter Williams opted for the Fighting Irish and was joined on stage by his family as they all donned Notre Dame caps. Jalen Julius chose Ole Miss over Louisville and Notre Dame. Other West Orange signings included Ramon Lyons to Georgetown, Ishmael Hollis to Hutchinson Jr. College, Brandon Wilson to Indiana, Brycedon Jones to Seton Hill, Roman Kerr to West Florida and Mike Scott to Eastern Kentucky. THE TURF SAGA
The West Orange Warriors’ various sports teams faced man battles during 2015 on the field — and then there was the one battle for the field. It began on March 19, when athletic director Adam Miller confirmed to the West Orange Times & Observer that the synthetic turf playing surface had been deemed unplayable after an inspection. That set off a fundraising blitz by the school that saw the Warriors raise $327,000 to pay for a replacement field, in cash. That new synthetic turf playing surface, which West Orange played on this fall, was completed during the weekend of Aug. 21-22 — just days ahead of the Warriors’ home opener Aug. 27 against Foundation Academy.
A TOURNAMENT OF THEIR OWN
Caitlyn Naginey, an All-Star baseball player for Winter Garden Little League, was part of history in the summer. Naginey, 13, joined girls from around Central Florida as a member of the Central Florida Rays to play in an all-girls national baseball tournament — the first of its kind. An event put together by Baseball for All, an organization dedicated to advancing baseball opportunities for girls, the 2015 Baseball for All Nationals brought together teams from all over the country — and one from Canada — for a weeklong tournament. In addition to the teams and families traveling from across the nation, the event was highlighted by a piece on ESPN. Participants even got to meet some of the women who played in the wartime women’s professional baseball league made famous by the movie “A League of Their Own.” The Rays finished as the tournament’s runner-up.
SEPT. 11 — FOOTBALL: WEST ORANGE 41, DR. PHILLIPS 34
In the renewal of the “Ol’ Orange Crate” rivalry after a five-year hiatus, the matchup of epic proportions lived up to every bit of the hype. Trailing 34-27 with 4:29 to play after Panthers quarterback Marvin Washington rushed for a go-ahead touchdown, West Orange quarterback Woody Barrett led the Warriors to the Dr. Phillips 3-yard-line. With 23.5 seconds remaining, Barrett barreled into the end zone, bringing the Warriors within a point. Instead of opting to kick the extra point and tie the game, head coach Bob Head opted to go for a two — and once again, Barrett called his own number. The successful conversion gave West Orange a 35-34 lead. A desperation pass by Dr. Phillips was intercepted by safety Ben Bollinger, who ran it back for a touchdown as time expired.
OCT. 16 — FOOTBALL: FOUNDATION ACADEMY 34, VICTORY CHRISTIAN 28 (OVERTIME)
Winning the program’s first district championship and securing its first home playoff game sure didn’t come easy for Foundation Academy. The Lions, who at one point led the Victory Christian Storm 21-7, watched as that lead turn into a 28-21 deficit. A touchdown by Gabe Walker with 30 seconds remaining tied the game at 28, and then in overtime, Walker’s number was called once more.
OCT. 31 — VOLLEYBALL: WEST ORANGE 3, APOPKA 2 (25-19, 9-25, 13-25, 25-19, 16-14)
WARRIORS CELEBRATE NATIONAL SIGNING DAY
On the morning of Feb. 4 the news trucks were parked out in front of West Orange High School, as media from around Central Florida — and in some cases, the nation — were all anxious to hear where two Warrior football players would be playing their college football. Running back Dexter Williams and running back/wide receiver Jalen Julius announced their college choices on live television and in front of a packed courtyard, with the rest of West Orange football’s scholarship recipients also being recognized. Choosing
After defeating the rival Blue Darters three times previously in the 2015 season, the fourth time proved to be the toughest for the West Orange Warriors. In the regional semifinals of the Class 8A State Playoffs, West Orange took the first set but dropped the second and third sets. A victory in the fourth set forced a deciding fifth set to 15. Apopka took a 1412 lead in that fifth set — a mere point from victory — but the Warriors rattled off four points to pull out the victory.

Top 5 Teams of 2015 Although plenty of teams made some noise and turned heads this year, the accomplishments of these five teams — spanning youth and varsity sports — set them apart from the rest.
WEST ORANGE WARRIORS
(Softball) 28-2, Class 8A, Region 1 Runner-up The Warriors spent several weeks ranked atop Florida in Class 8A and, were it not for losing a thrilling Class 8A, Region 1 Championship, they may have had an opportunity to play for a state title. Nonetheless, a talented senior class led West Orange to a memorable season that included a district championship and just one loss in the regular season.
OCOEE CARDINALS
(AYF Football) 15-1, 3rd place at AYF Nationals The Ocoee Cardinals eighth-grade team was one uncharacteristic game away from possibly joining the Ocoee Bulldogs as national champions, only of American Youth Football instead of Pop Warner. Still, coach Julian Pittman’s team was utterly dominant for most of its run through the fall of 2015 — including outscoring its final two opponents at AYF Nationals in Kissimmee by a combined scored of 64-0.
OCOEE BULLDOGS
(Pop Warner Football) 16-0, National Champions The Ocoee Bulldogs Unlimited team simply had no equal this fall. Head coach Jerry Middleton’s bunch emerged as the champions of the eight-team national championship tournament at the Pop Warner Super Bowl, capping a 16-0 season. It is the first national championship for the organization and the first in more than a decade for any team from the Mid-Florida Pop Warner Conference.
WEST ORANGE WARRIORS
(Football) 12-2, Class 8A, Region 1 Champs Although the Warriors came up short of their ultimate goal of hoisting a state title at the Citrus Bowl on Dec. 12, West Orange’s season was a historic one nevertheless. The Warriors set a record for wins and advanced deeper in the playoffs than ever. Furthermore, West Orange beat Apopka in the state playoffs for the first time and toppled rival Dr. Phillips in a high-profile regular-season showdown.

(Boys Soccer) 14-2-4, Class 5A State Runner-up The Warriors put together a thrilling run to the Class 5A State Championship Game, including an exhilarating victory in penalty kicks in the state semifinal a day before. Though West Orange’s good fortune in matches decided by penalty kicks did run out in the championship against Cypress Bay, the ride to Melbourne was still quite memorable and was the program’s second state title appearance in three years — an impressive feat.
