WHAT A GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD WE LIVE IN

Awareness, responsibility key to keeping pedestrians safe has had pretty good success addressing the pedestrian-victim problem. Since the BFF Program’s implementation, the percentage of drivers yielding to pedestrians has gotten better. In August 2013, the percentage of drivers yielding was 13%. In June 2015 it was 58%. Even so, in the latest ranking, the Orlando-Kissimmee Metropolitan DENNY O’NEIL Area was the third-most dangerous BALDWIN PARK RESIDENTIAL place to walk in Florida. drivers could drive through that intersection like the roundabout didn’t exist. The city redesigned the intersection and enlarged the roundabout so drivers now have to drive around the center portion. Now it is a much safer intersection for vehicles and for pedestrians crossing Lakemont Avenue. Now, let’s get personal. Within Metro Orlando, on average two walkers are struck each day, and one is killed each week. What are your chances of survival if you are one of those walkers struck by a vehicle? If the vehicle that hits you is going 20 mph (about the average speed of vehicles traveling in a Baldwin Park alley), you have a nine out of 10 chance of surviving. If the vehicle is traveling at 30 mph (the likely speed for a lot of vehicles on New Broad Street south of Common Way Road), we have a five out of 10 chance of surviving. Things get much grimmer if the vehicle is traveling at 40 mph: Pedestrians have a one in 10 chance of survival. Yikes, again! (By the way, the speed limit in Baldwin Park is 25 mph.) Florida law is that drivers must yield — slow down or stop — for pedestrians crossing the road within a crosswalk, even if traffic control signals or yield signs are not present. Let’s do our part to make Baldwin Park safer for pedestrians. Obey the law! As a pedestrian, always be aware of your surroundings and don’t take chances with approaching vehicles. OK, those numbers I asked you to remember earlier (164 and three) represent the fine in dollars and the number of points added to your record if you as a driver are caught failing to yield to a pedestrian. I’ll let you guess which number is the points added and which is the amount of the dollar fine.

estled among the quaint homes and quiet blocks of Baldwin Park hides a small studio where the magic happens. It is a place where the usual silence of the community is broken with the crash of a cymbal and the wail of a guitar riff. From the outside, it looks like most of the other guesthouses you’ll find, but looks are deceiving. On the inside, walls and windows are lined haphazardly with memory foam to help absorb the

BALDWIN PARK LIVING | OCTOBER

sound of musical instruments. Where there’s not foam, electric and acoustic guitars hang in place, waiting to be thrashed upon. Guitar and bass amps sit up against the side walls, while a drum kit is placed in the back beside a keyboard. The space is messy, but it bleeds creativity and reflects that passion of a group of Baldwin Parkers looking to make music. “What people are looking for, and what we want to deliver, is a good time,” says Room 2 co-founder and guitarist Sam Atallah. “It’s that people can have fun and get up

and want to dance.” Along with being a member of the Baldwin Park band, Atallah converted his guesthouse specifically to play music and hosts a majority of the group’s practices. Since the band’s founding in 2009, Room 2 has become Baldwin Park’s official rock band, playing shows in and around the area. It also has amassed a pretty impressive following on Facebook, with almost 15,000 Likes. But just like most bands, Room 2 had to start from nothing and work its way up. “Sam and I started playing together just at a backyard get-together between families in 2009,” says Mark Klafter, the band’s co-founder and drummer. “So Ju-

ly 2009, at a backyard barbecue — congas and an acoustic guitar. “At the time, Mark and I really didn’t know each other, and I just showed up with a guitar to this party at a mutual friend’s place,” Atallah says. From that meeting sprang a close friendship between the two and eventually led to the band in its current incarnation. Room 2 now has seven members including Atallah, Klafter, singer Todd Bentley, bassist James Baker, guitarist Will Parker, singer Jenn Corddry and keyboardist AJ Knight. Many of the current members knew each other to some extent before joining. Everyone’s ability to come together in such an organic way plays a vital role in the success of the band as a whole. “The important thing about our band is that everyone gels, and that’s very important,” Atallah says. “It’s good chemistry, and everybody is supportive of everyone.” Along with growing as a unit, Room 2 has seen its musical range progress as well from when it first

We’re not in it as a business; we are in it as an avocation — we’re in it for fun and for people around us. It is a great way to get together and have a good time.” — MARK KLAFTER, DRUMMER

got started. Originally, the idea for Room 2 was developed to solely be a 90s grunge band covering groups such as Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. While the group still dabbles in 90s music, it has since expanded to include just about everything from the 60s to now. By opening up its music catalog to the current 140 to 150 songs, Room 2 has gone from playing in people’s backyards to showcasing their talents at different local venues, including Baldwin Park’s annual Independence Bash to celebrate the Fourth of July. “I look forward to that gig every year,” Klafter says. “People are in such great spirit, and you have people from all ages, and I’m just so pleased to be able to do that. What an honor that we are the band for that show. “The nice part about that, too, is for venues like that where you have the gambit of ages, we can mix up stuff, throw it out there, and just pull different genres in and get everybody up close to that stage,” Bentley says. “And sudden-

ly, it doesn’t matter what you’re playing — you have 80-year-old women foot tapping to Foo Fighters and you’re like, ‘Wow! How did that happen?’” It’s that kind of crowd interaction off which the members of Room 2 thrive, and it’s part of the reason why they are dedicated to something done solely in the name of fun. During the day, band members go to their day jobs as doctors, engineers and so on, but that doesn’t stop them from enjoying the craft that they love. It also helps that the music provides an artistic counter-balance to the daily stress of work. “It’s a good outlet for all of us,” Atallah says. “It’s a good time for us to put all of our work stress aside and let loose and have fun with our friends and other people who enjoy similar music.” “When you’re up there, there is the pressure of the moment — you have to get the song right, you have to remember those lyrics — so you don’t have time to think about how bad your day was,” Bentley says.

Ask the Dentist Q: A:

True or False... Does candy cause cavities? We all have bacteria living in our mouth. When you eat candy, the resident bacteria enjoy the sugar as much as you do! When the bacteria in your mouth start consuming these dietary sugars it produces acid as a product. The bacteria that cause cavities are living organisms. And just like all living things they consume food (dietary sugars) and in return create waste products (acid). This acid product is what dissolves the enamel of your teeth, which leads to dental decay, or cavities. However, this acid is also produced when you eat anything that is a starch or carbohydrate. Bacteria love carbohydrates - dietary sugar, and candies are no different. Food and snacks such as potato chips, crackers, bread, fruit, peanut butter and pasta have the same effect on your teeth. So... if all these foods have the same effect, why is it that candy has such a bad reputation. The answer is…candy doesn’t have any nutritional value. It is simply empty calories with no nutritional benefit. If you choose to have a piece of candy this Halloween, moderation is the key. It is very important to brush and floss immediately after eating candy and other sweets. Remember it is not candy that will harm your teeth, but the bacterial product that hurts your teeth and causes tooth decay.

Candy Buy Back

This Halloween season we’re offering to buy back your candy! Receive $1 for every bag of candy brought to the office. Evelyn Ortiz-Castillo, DMD - General Dentist 4808 New Broad Street | Orlando, FL 32814

OCT. 6 AND 7 ‘THE BEST OF SECOND CITY’ This “must-see” night of comedy features Chicago’s brightest comedy stars in a two-night engagement. The Second City Comedy Troupe finds laughs in everything from Orlando’s “history” to our basketball team mixed with classic sketches by Second City’s celebrated alumni, including Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Bill Murray and more. Celebrating 55 years of cutting edge satire, these performances are made possible through the generous support of Kathie and Bill Hohns. At the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Call 844-513-2014 or visit drphillipscenter.org.

OCT. 23: ‘ERIC PLAYS HAYDN’ In this Orlando Philharmonic presentation, world-renowned cellist Music Director Eric Jacobsen will take the stage as soloist, performing the virtuosic second concerto of Haydn. This special performance is enhanced as flutist Colleen Blagov offers one of the first performances of the much-in-demand composer Judd Greenstein’s “Flute Concerto.” The concert concludes with Edward Elgar’s hauntingly beautiful “Enigma Variations” at 7 p.m. at the Plaza Live in east Orlando. OCT. 8 ‘STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE — IN CONCERT’ It’s definitely in our galaxy — not so far away and only a week into the future when we get to experience STAR WARS as never before. Orlando’s first-ever live performance of “Star Wars: A New Hope — in Concert” will feature the history-making full-length film on the big screen with the Orlando Philharmonic performing the iconic music of John Williams. At 7:30 p.m. at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Call 844-5132014 or visit drphillipscenter.org. OCT. 11 TO NOV. 19 ‘HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES’ “The game is afoot” as Orlando Shakes adapts a very tongue-incheek version of Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous “Hound of the Baskervilles.” Even Sir Arthur would find the humor in this version of Sherlock Holmes’ investigation of the Baskerville family where — one by one — the male heirs are dropping dead. Three actors play a dozen roles in this production that is a “masterclass in funny.” Directed by Orlando Shakes’ comically inventive Artistic Director Jim Helsinger. Call (407) 447-1700 or visit orlandoshakes.org. OCT. 12 ‘FLORIDA PROJECT’ One of the most anticipated films of the year was filmed in a bleak, extended-stay motel near Disney; won rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival; and introduces us to a precocious 6-year-old who is unaware of the poverty that defines her existence. This amazing and “very local film” premieres at the Enzian in Maitland with Brooklyn Kimberly Prince, of Winter Springs, as the magically optimistic 6-year-old. Her co-star, Willem Defoe, is receiving “career-best” reviews as the manager of the motel in Kissimmee that is the exemplar of living in poverty just two miles east of DisneyWorld. Call (407) 629-0054 or visit Enzian.org.

OCT. 13 TO 29 ‘THE ODD COUPLE’ Prolific American playwright Neil Simon brought the messy Oscar Madison and fastidious Felix Ungar to the stage in 1965, winning the Tony for Best Author of a Play. “The Odd Couple” went on to become a successful film and TV series before Simon brilliantly revised the play for a female cast (1985). The clever folks at the Garden Theatre in Winter Garden have decided to present these opposite personalities in repertory with both male and female casts. (There’s even a discount if you see both!) Call (407) 877-4736 or visit gardentheatre.org. OCT. 14 BEATLEMANIA’S ‘CLASSICAL MYSTERY TOUR’ Celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” — the album that changed musical history — in a show featuring original members of the Broadway sensation “Beatlemania.” Performing 30 Beatles hits with the Orlando Philharmonic, the show has been called “much more than an incredible simulation.” If you like The Beatles, you’ll love “Classical Mystery Tour,” in two performances at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Bob Carr Theater. Call (407) 770-0071 or visit orlandophil.org. OCT. 15 WILLIE NELSON & FAMILY With a six-decade career and 200-plus albums, this iconic Texan is the creative genius behind the historic recordings “Crazy” and “Red Headed Stranger.” Willie Nelson has earned every conceivable award as a musician as well as being an author, actor and activist. He has created 10 new albums, released a New York Times’ bestseller book, headlined Farm Aid, launched his own cannabis company and was honored by the Library of Congress with the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song (the first country artist to receive the distinguished award). Premium tickets are available for this concert, which begins at 8 p.m. at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Call 844-513-2014 or visit drphillipscenter.org.

OCT. 17 TO 22 ‘ON YOUR FEET — THE GLORIA ESTAFAN MUSICAL’ This inspiring true story is about two people who believed in their talent — and each other — to become an international sensation. From humble beginnings in Cuba, Gloria and Emilio Estefan came to America and became a crossover sensation at the top of the pop music world. But then — from stardom to life-threatening tragedy — “On Your Feet!” takes us inside the story of this groundbreaking couple who faced adversity and found a way to end up on their feet. This musical renews your faith in the American dream. For tickets, call 844-513-2014 or visit drphillipscenter.org. OCT. 17 THE MORSE MUSEUM OPENS TWO NEW EXHIBITS As the Morse Museum continues its 75th-year celebration, the museum focuses on the “creative eye” and the creative process of Louis Comfort Tiffany. In two exhibits opening Oct. 17, “Tiffany Studios Designs” and “Tiffany Impressions on Film, Canvas and Paper,” the museum explores the way in which Tiffany’s vision was translated into some of the most innovative decorative objects of their time. Best-known for decorative glass, Tiffany was also a painter and photographer. The exhibits include art-works, sketches, drawings, and photographs that reveal the way in which Tiffany found inspiration everywhere. Visit morsemuseum. org. OCT 21 AND 22 ‘VERDI REQUIEM” The “Verdi Requiem” magically combines the drama of opera and the sonorities of the symphony with virtuosic vocal solos. In 1873, Verdi went into such deep mourning for a friend whose funeral he could not attend. Instead, the composer created the Requiem, which had its first performance one year after his friend’s death. From the antiphonal trumpets, to the crashing bass drum; from the angelic call of three flutes to the breath-taking Dies Irae, Verdi created one of the world’s most thrilling

Doug Meyer is living his dream in Baldwin Park: opening his own brewery.

U.S. Marine Corps veteran Doug Meyer is opening his own brewery in Baldwin Park.

U.S. Marine Corps veteran is trading in his dog tags for draft beer, opening up a brewery coming soon to Baldwin Park’s Village Center. Tactical Brewing Company is one of the latest tenants coming to Baldwin Park’s downtown strip. It’s the brainchild of founder and owner Doug Meyer, who says the brewery will have a military theme with plenty of references to U.S. Marine Corps jargon and terms. Oh yeah, and plenty of tasty beer, Meyer says. The military influences are noticeable as soon as you look over Continued on page 26

Continued from page 25 the beer menu, with selections such as Improvised Explosive Noms, a passion fruit Berliner Weisse and Agent Orange, a blood orange Saison. It shows itself again in the brewery’s tagline: “Strategically chaotic beer for those who have been there and done that.” “You can pertain it to military, but once you’re old enough to legally drink a beer, we’ve all gone through our walk in life,” Meyer says. “You’ve earned the right to have a beer. You’ve been there and done that.” But the military references aren’t some kind of gimmick, it’s a part of Meyer’s life. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a rifleman and was deployed once to Iraq and once to Afghanistan. After four years in the Marines,

Meyer decided it was time to move on. He wanted to slow down and find a new career, he says. “I learned a lot, and I’m so glad that I did it, it’s just that it wasn’t for me,” Meyer says. “It takes a toll on your body, in the infantry especially. I wanted to go to college. I was ready to start a brewery.” Meyer attended the University of Central Florida, where he earned his MBA and pursued one of his greatest passions: craft beer. “I’d be out and drinking these different beers and I was so curious trying them all,” Meyer says. “I genuinely enjoyed it. I became addicted.” That love for craft beer came about while he was back home between his deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He became fascinated with the creative process and started researching how to make his own beer creations. He met

with brew clubs, read books and watched several YouTube videos on the process. “There’s the art behind creating it — I genuinely enjoy trying other people’s craft beer too,” he says. “A lot of these brewers are creating it from scratch and you’re putting your heart and soul into it. I can literally go to another brewery and say, ‘OK, I see what you did here. I see what you’re thinking.’” Another part of Meyer’s drive to open up a brewery comes from his own experiences as a veteran. After coming home from his last deployment and returning to civilian life, Meyer says he felt off-balance. The group of soldiers he’d grown close with overseas all were back home with their families, and the friends he’d left behind had started families of their own. A lot changes when you’re gone for so long, he says. “When I got out of the military, personally that was the hardest time I had,” Meyer says. “You’re with these people every single day for four years and you got through some crazy stuff at some points. In many cases you many never see most of those people again. It’s a wild thought.” That’s why starting a brewery made perfect sense for Meyer. It would be a place where veterans and residents come together and socialize. It’s a place to belong, Meyer says. “We’re a brand that’s attracting veterans, but it’s a fun brand so that way everyone can come on board,” Meyer says. “We love veterans, we love craft beer enthusiasts, cool people and first responders. We want to get everyone under one roof. We can’t wait to be a part of the community in Baldwin Park and give back to the area.” Meyer says he hopes to open the brewery by December, after the permitting process is finished.

Order on the

his pick-up game 10 years ago, and Baldwin Park residents have been enjoying it ever since. TROY HERRING ASSOCIATE EDITOR

O

ut on the basketball courts of Blue Jacket Park, Baldwin Parker Rick Schreiber works on his game. Slowly stepping up to the freethrow line, he gives the ball a couple of quick bounces before lining up his shot. With his timing down, he bends his knees and sets into motion. His arms extend out as a flick of the wrist sends the ball flying to the orange cylinder 15-feet away. An emphatic “swoosh” sound sings out before quickly fading away. This game is more than a simple sport for Schreiber — it’s a means of exercise and fun. But just as importantly, the court is a place that reminds him of growing up in a family with a basketball tradition. “I work for a basketball team called the Harlem Wizards,” Schreiber says. “We do community

basketball events, we do fundraisers where we play against school teachers — it’s actually my family’s business, my grandfather started it in 1962.”

PARADISE

Schreiber moved to Florida for a job in 2003 from Baltimore, before he found his way to Baldwin Park three years later — that’s when the idea for his pick-up basketball club came. As a member at a local L.A. Fitness, Schreiber says the crowds waiting to play basketball became unbearable. Making matters worse was that L.A. Fitness used indoor courts — Schreiber felt as though playing outside was much more fun. That, combined with the realization that there were no real games of pick-up basketball going on in the area, inspired Schreiber to act. “I just kind of had an epiphany to take it into my own hands,” Schreiber says. “I see these nice courts, and there were no regular games that had actual adults — like not teenagers that were playing.” Since those early days of sending out emails to see if anyone would be interested in playing, Schreiber says regulars and new guys have kept it going. While most of those playing are from the Baldwin Park area, some come in from as far as Lakeland to enjoy the basketball festivities. The response itself has been so solid that they utilize all three courts in Blue Jacket Park every Saturday. The courts at Blue Jacket Park were chosen for a few reasons. “Orange County Parks — they

do a nice job with the courts — they actually just put new backboards up, and new rims,” Schreiber says. “I grew up in Baltimore, and you were lucky if you ever found a full court anywhere, and if you did it never had a net and backboards were terrible. For me, it is like paradise here.”

LUCKY NO. 13

For the basketball club in Baldwin Park, it’s traditional that the first matchup of five-on-five ball is always played to 13 — which is a mystery to Schreiber, who can’t quite recall when or how the tradition got started. With such a low score to reach, instead of two-pointers there are one-point baskets, while everything outside the three-point line equates to two points to help stretch the game out. After the first game, each is played to 11. Another fun aspect that Schreiber enjoys setting up during

the morning games is setting up the winners of game one and game two to play each other in a pseudo-championship. The games are competitive, but in the healthiest way, and it’s something that Schreiber feels really draws people to in to play. “In addition to myself, there is a good group of core guys — guys who like to keep it fun and lighthearted,” Schreiber says. “Everybody plays, so if you’re not good, you don’t have to feel like you have to sit out — everyone can participate. “The competitive level has gotten pretty good ... but I think it’s mainly the fact that you can come out and play basketball,” Schreiber says. “You don’t have to worry about getting in a fist fight and you’re not going to have to worry about political court stuff where you’re not going to be able to play.”

IF YOU GO FIVE-ON-FIVE BASKETBALL WHEN: 8 a.m Saturdays WHERE: Blue Jacket Park, 2790 Upper Park Road, Orlando

tions were received. Glenridge parents hope to raise $12,000 for the PTA budget and $40,000 for laptops for classroom teachers to help implement digital learning. While many schools look to fund new amenities and projects through a PTA, Glenridge chooses to take things a step further, allowing parents to contribute directly to their school through the Lion’s Pride Fund. An instrumental figure in starting the Lion’s Pride Fund was Principal Trevor Honohan, now in his fifth year at Glenridge Middle School. He started the same type of fund while serving as principal of Audubon Park Elementary, and it’s done wonders at Glenridge, giving a public school the amount of funding a private school would normally receive, he says. “We’ve probably raised, over the course of all the years, halfa-million dollars,” Honohan says. “Over the course of the year it’s somewhere between $50,000 and $75,000 raised by parents who care about their kids. It’s rather unique; it sort of levels the playing field between public and private, and it elevates us just a little bit above.” The major reason why the fund works is because parents not only have an ability to help, but they also a willingness and desire to do so, Honohan says. “They want to give back, because its where they came from and it means something to them,” Honohan says. “That’s different. We’re fortunate enough to be in that unique situation.” Lion’s Pride Fund President Niki Tringas says the fund has allowed the school to pay for numerous projects and endeavors, going beyond what the PTA raises each year and accomplishing annual goals. “We’re like the magic wand,” Tringas says. “If I could have three wishes it would be these things. … This is what we’re going to do to make Glenridge amazing. We couldn’t exist without the PTA, but we would be treading water (without the fund). We need an ex-

tra boost to do things that aren’t even offered.” Tringas says since Audubon Park Elementary first implemented a fund, many other schools in Orange County have followed suit. Between 26 and 30 schools are doing it now, she says. Glenridge digital video production teacher Alison Hannon has seen the benefits of the fund firsthand. It helped raised the money for 15 video cameras for her class. “The fund is such an amazing

part of the school systems like Audubon Park and Glenridge,” Hannon says. “The community and the families that make up this little place we are in … it’s almost like a private school situation, where the parents say ‘Yes, this is our school, and there’s nothing more important than investing in our school.’ “All those special things we want to do as teachers? Done,” she says. “It’s almost like a fairy godmother situation.”

Lion’s Pride Fund President Niki Tringas, Treasurer Rebecca DeVane and Events Chair Valorie Karter were accepting donations during a kickoff event in August.

Space cadet Patrick Clements says completing his own living space is the toughest challenge.

home is what you make it. In the case of interior designer Patrick Clements, it is an extension of his creative mind and personality. Walking through his home in Baldwin Park, you will find perfectly placed furniture from room to room and art pieces complementing the space from spots on the walls. The use of different colors and textures adds a robust aesthetic diversity to the rooms. Although each is designed in its own unique way — from classic to modern motifs — it is so well done that

42

BALDWIN PARK LIVING | OCTOBER

there are no hard juxtapositions, just a nice flow from room to room. Everything in his home, from the furniture to the wall color, was handpicked by Clements, who uses these materials as a painter would use oil paints or as a sculpture would use clay. These objects are his medium. Despite his 10 years working as an interior designer, through which he has done designs for numerous homes and apartments, oddly, his home always has offered the most difficult challenges. “It’s definitely more of an over time (process) to come to-

gether, as opposed to someone that comes in and really wants to redo their home — my home was a build up,” Clements says. “Totally different concept than walking up to an interior designer and saying, ‘Here is my empty shell, do it.’” But that’s not the “worst” part about interior design he says. “The worst part about being in this business … is there is always something new and it’s always like, ‘Oh my God, I want that,’” Clements says. “ So there’s the challenge — not buying furniture all the time.” While Clements “struggles” with life as an interior designer in his home, the thriving designer has been enjoying his time working on homes and apartments for clients of Saxon-Clark Interiors — helping to create dream homes for customers.

Troy Herring

Although design always has been a passion for the Parrish native, Clements got a bit of a later start in actually making his dream become a reality.

CHANGE OF PLANS

After moving to Orlando in 1989, Clements spent the next nine years working at Disney before deciding it was time for him to dive into the interior design world full-time. “It kind of was an epiphany in my mind, that I had just turned 40 … I kind of thought, ‘What am I going to do? I don’t have a degree — what am I going to do when I’m 50?’” Clements says. “It really was a push within myself to want to really have more of a career — and to have an education and to do something that I was really passionate about.” With that realization, Clements went back to college, graduating with a degree in interior design services from Seminole State College before going on to work as a design consultant at Robb & Stucky Interiors and a design consultant/salesman at Baer’s Furniture. Clements was lucky in his start to find a job in the field of his dreams, but at the same time, there were difficulties beyond his control. At the time he made the move into interior design, the economy was in a downturn, so building a career was a huge task. However since then, the economy has recovered, and Clements is working on bigger and better projects with Saxon-Clark — which allows him to enjoy the things he loves most about design, such as the hard work and the reward at the end.

Clements says. “The most favorite part is throwing it all together, but that’s only 10% of the job. Ninety percent of the job is really a lot of work, and a lot of research and a lot of focus to get a client where you want them to be.” That kind of dedication to his craft is one of the many aspects that have made Clements an attractive designer to many in the area. Along with his tenacious work ethic, there is something that Clements holds above all else — making sure his customers get the home of their dreams, regardless of his own personal tastes. “I think that it is just most important to me, that people understand that good design and to be a good designer, it’s not about me as the designer,” Clements says. “You need to understand what a person wants — it’s about their style. “It could be the most, to me, unattractive style in the world … but it’s not important that I like it,” he says. “It is important that I do what you like and make you happy — good design is not (about) the designer but the client.”

CLIENTS COME FIRST

And make no mistake, designing the inside of a home is much harder than it appears, and it’s no snap of the finger the way HGTV makes it seem, Clements says. “It’s really, really a lot of work — you’ve got to have a passion for putting together the creative part, and planning, and space planning, and making the decisions and making the client happy and learning to listen,” OCTOBER | BALDWIN PARK LIVING

KEEPING IT REAL ESTATE

Autumn updates CHRISTINA RORDAM FLORIDA REALTY INVESTMENTS Christina Rordam is a local Realtor with 12 years experience and a member of ORRAs Top Producer Club. For more, visit christinasellsorlando.com.

With fall unfolding, now is the perfect time to get that home improvement list done. The holidays are beginning, and your family likely will be hosting guests at home, so why not make a great impression with some upkeep and home improvements? Unlike the states that experience snow, here in Central Florida we have to be sure to guard against rain, wind and, from time to time, more severe storms.

1

Hurricane season overlaps with our fall, so a good place to start with your autumn home updates is the roof. Step outside and take a good look. Is there anything that seems damaged? How about the age of your roof? Is it reaching the end of its useable life? Many roofing contractors will come evaluate the home for free or a nominal charge. Having a professional assess the condition of your roof is a great thing to do pre hurricane season. But if you haven’t yet, there’s no time like the present.

2

Although we don’t have quite the number of falling leaves as our northern neighbors do, fall is the best time to get your mind in the gutters! Better Homes and Gardens website offers some insight on why this is so important. BGH.com points out that your gutters keep thousands of gallons of water off of your home’s exterior each year. Especially living in a state such as Florida, it’s vital to keep them free of debris with a good cleaning and mesh guards put in place to keep them that way. I love squirrels and find them adorable. However, squirrels birds and other animals can make homes in your gutters so it’s important to keep track of their condition annually — even if you’ve placed guards and cleaned them out.

50

BALDWIN PARK LIVING | OCTOBER

3

Some other key items to check up on this fall are your ductwork, HVAC and weatherstripping. Leaky ducts are one of the main culprits for out of this world utility bills, so it’s advised to keep a yearly lookout on them for any potential rifts. Many homeowners will hire HVAC pros to come evaluate and service their systems yearly or bi annually for optimum functionality. Some utility companies will provide a free energy-efficiency inspection too, so there are multiple routes to go in keeping your family comfortable heading into winter. Weather stripping around doors and windows can let climate-controlled air out into the wild without your knowing. In fact, BGH. com sites a U.S. Dept. of Energy study saying as much as 10% of your electric bill can be blamed on deterioration in weather stripping. Yikes! Make a visual inspection by walking your home’s perimeter inside and out to see where weather striping needs repairing and make the necessary fixes.

4

Once you’ve ensured optimal HVAC and weather stripping performance in your home, take your energy efficiency to the next level by installing a smart home thermostat like the one offered by Nest. Smart thermostats can be set up to control temps and maximize efficiency when you are not at home, helping to shave a few bucks off your utility bill. Just think of all the pumpkin spice lattes you can buy with that extra money! Sorry, had to do it. Already have a smart thermostat in place? Replace all the light bulbs in your home with energy star approved LED bulbs. RISMedia.com notes that you could consume 75% less energy from your lighting sources with just this simple fix. The bulbs last up to 50% longer than

incandescent lights. Many holiday decorations now come equipped with LED bulbs or can be replaced with LED bulbs, so you can decorate and save at the same time.

5

Now back to those pesky storms. Make an evacuation plan, just in case. The closer you are to the coast, the more important this is. Make space to house any patio furniture or outdoor items in the event of high winds, and don’t forget to trim those trees. If you have any dead limbs or trees that need removal altogether, do so before they become a liability to your home. Stock up on all your medications both prescription and over the counter. Store a few battery-operated fans, lanterns and batteries to power them (many of these items may require D batteries, so check Amazon, Costco and your local home-improvement warehouse). While you’re shopping for batteries, be sure to check that the ones in your smoke detectors are operational and grab replacements for the future. Flashlights are also important, as is a battery-operated clock radio. A gallon of water per day per person, some non-perishable food items, duct tape and flashlights are key to keep on hand, as well. Extra towels, blankets, heavy gloves and rain gear make the priority list, too. And don’t forget your furry family members. Keep pet meds in stock as well as up to a week’s supply dry food and water. A home is more or less a living, breathing member of your family. It’s important to make checks on its health and condition several times a year and keep up its appearance. Home is where your family and your heart are, so take care to keep it well maintained.

The first phase of the active senior-living facility, located at 2687 Lake Baldwin Lane, comprises 80 dwelling units for seniors spread throughout three buildings, along with a 40-bed medical facility, a café and a pool area. “We’re very excited — this phase sold out before we even moved a shovel of dirt,” Chief Executive Officer Roger Stevens said. “There’s a high demand; we’re happy to serve the people.”
