WOW - Wonder of the Word
Why is this book given the title WOW? W O N D E R O F T H E W O R D! Paul’s Prayer ‘I ask that your minds may be opened to see his light, so that you will know what is the hope to which he has called you, how rich are the wonderful blessings he promises his people’ Ephesians 1:18
Wonder, excitement, thrill, buzz, call it what you may, that is what we experience when our minds (the eyes of our heart) are opened to discover treasures in God’s Word. We experience WOW, the Wonder of God’s Word in many different ways as we study his Word. The woman at the well met Jesus, and she was WOWed by him when she discovered that he knew everything about her without her telling him anything about herself and when she discovered it was the Messiah himself who was speaking to her! The WOW spread to the people in her village as they heard for themselves the words of Jesus. The disciples were frightened by the storm on the lake but after Jesus rebuked the elements and calmed the sea, they were terrified all the more frightened. Why? They said - (not just the demons) even the wind and the sea obey Him! They were WOWed not only to see Jesus demonstrating power and authority over the winds and the sea, but more frightened to be in the presence of Jesus ! We are ‘WOWed’ with each revelation of God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit – their character and attributes. We are WOWed to see what triune God does directly and through his servants. We are also WOWed when we discover our true nature. Saul boasted that he was faultless as for righteousness based on the law; but he saw it as ‘garbage’ when he considers righteousness that is through faith in Christ. Philippians 3:4-9. David prayed, “Open my eyes, so that I may see the wonderful truths in your law. Psalm 119:18
The Bible is timeless. It speaks to us today because our human nature is the same as that of the people who are described in it although they lived hundreds of years ago. No scanner in the world can trace our thoughts and motives, but God’s Word can. No medicine, money, or force can cause our behavior or heart to change, but God’s Word can. In these Bible story sessions, we should prepare to be WOWed by the Word.
WOW - Wonder of the Word
Discipleship Training using Bible Story format. How important is it? Discipleship is essential part of the Great Commission of Jesus. Jesus, in his Great Commission commanded his disciples to go to ‘Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples’. He did not say to make them Christians or church goers! Not all those who attend church regularly necessarily be Disciples of Jesus. They may be very sincere and be religious in their participation in church activities and be generous in their works of charity. Churches are a ‘mission field’: The first few Bible passages (stories) make God’s plan of salvation very clear to the participants. It provides them with an opportunity to know the beauty of the Good News of Jesus and to get to know Him as their Lord and Saviour. This spiritual regeneration is the beginning of the discipleship. It gives one an assurance of Salvation. I used to be good church goer but for a long time did not know Jesus as my Saviour and Lord nor did I have assurance of salvation. Most churches are a mission field! They need the Gospel. Knowing about Jesus is not the same as knowing Him personally. Most churches have no focus on discipleship. Thank God for those churches where they encourage discipleship culture. They focus on the study of the Word, encourage accountability to one another, encourage the study of the books that are related to the fundamentals of faith with others in the church family etc. Unfortunately, most pastors have no knowledge of the Great Commission of Jesus Christ. In most churches, there is no focus on discipleship in their teaching. Church members attend church service week after week but they have not assurance of salvation or awareness of need to become a disciple of Christ and disciple others. Seriously, discipleship is not a training course that begins and ends in a few days. It is a life time journey. But it must have a start. These Bible Studies in this book offer the opportunities to individuals and churches to pay attention to the Great Commission of our Lord Jesus and to know who is a disciple of Jesus Christ and how to be one and live like one. By the time one does a few Bible Studies, they will learn the guidelines of doing the Bible Study. 2
WOW - Wonder of the Word
What is a good Bible Study?
What does the passage say? • What did it mean to the readers then ? and What does it mean to me now?
Some call it inductive Bible Study. Expositional teaching is excellent. It also asks the same questions mentioned above. The teacher or the leader takes the people through every verse in the passage. This allows the Word to speak to us. We do not read our thoughts into the passage or twist it to suite us! Some preachers and so called Bible teachers read a passage and take off with their own thoughts and do not know where to land! They read their thoughts into the passage or hop from one verse to the other to support their argument. This is not the case of ’rightly dividing the Word’. Some of them give a long list of points. The content may be good but the it is very difficult to remember and share with others. Why Story format? Stories are interesting, easy to remember and to share with others. They travel easily. It is the method Jesus used. He (Jesus) would not speak to them without using parables. Mark 4:34 Ground reality is in most countries over 90% people want to hear or watch and learn not by reading books. These are called Oral learners or preferred oral learners. A few years ago, In America, there was a research done on literacy among adults. The results were interesting. 14 out of 100 are illiterate. 29 of them can barely read. They cannot make sense out of reading a sentence. They are called functionally illiterate. There are 44 of them who are educated but prefer to watch or hear and learn than to read a book and learn. These are called preferred Oral Learners. Example: My friend’s son failed in his high school final exam. He found it difficult to read and learn. He learnt the same topics on U-tube and passed the exam with distinction! Remaining 13 people out of 100 are the Literate. They prefer to read and learn to watching or hearing. They want definitions, bullet points etc. How important is the Story format to the Oral Learners? Oral Learners find it difficult to remember the lists and definitions. They prefer to receive Bible teaching in Story format. It is like offering water to the crane in a plate! It finds it difficult to drink. Same is the case with oral learners when we preach to them giving bullet points and lists. 3

Ask yourself how many sermons you heard in your life and how many you can remember well? Stories make deep impression in the minds and hearts of people. Not only easy to learn, easy to share with others. They travel fast. It is the method Jesus used. Bible is 75 percent narration; 15 percent poetry and 10 percent exposition. Even non-narrative passages can be studied using Bible story format. During this training, you will see the demonstration of this. ‘ The Bible Story session is enjoyed by both illiterate and highly educated people. I have never seen anything like this.’ Pastor Robert from Kuwait said. ‘I studied theology for 6 years. When I go to labour camps, I do the Bible stories. The response is great.’ Pastor John from Tamil Church in Sharjah. ‘I have a congregation of 200 people from Hakki Pakki tribe. I never had any formal theological training. I often wondered what to teach week after week. After learning Bible Stories, I feel confident. I only had guns but not cartridges! Bibles stories are like having cartridges. I do not need to write down any notes!’ Pastor Moses from Hubli said with smile in his face.
Questions in the Bible Study: Out of 200 times, when Jesus was asked questions, only less than five times he directly answered. He often responded with another question or shared a parable. Example: In the story of the Good Samaritan, (Luke 10:25-37 Jesus askes the teacher of the law, “In your opinion, which one of these three acted like a neighbor toward the man attacked by the robbers?” Jesus invited discussion. In Bible Story session, the leader asks questions so that the participants can find answers for themselves. When they ‘own’ the answers, they will remember for a long time. The leader does not ‘preach’ but let the Word speak to them. Story of Nathan: In 2 Samuel 12 we have a story of King David. He committed adultery and murder. He was trying to carry on with his life as if nothing has happened. Prophet Nathan rebukes king David - not by directly confronting him. He shared a story of a rich man who took away the only sheep of a poor man to prepared a meal for his guests. David was angry and said. “I swear by the living LORD that the man who did this ought to die! For having done such a cruel thing, he must pay back four times as much as he took.” Then Nathan said, ‘You are that man.’ David made correct spiritual observation in the character of the rich man. Nathan then drew David into the story and made spiritual application. This is what happens in the Bible Story sessions. Bible characters act like mirrors and show our condition. When God’s word speaks, there is comfort and conviction of sin.

Partnership with Churches Introduction: General Goal
Come along side with churches and help them with Bible Teaching notes as they seek to become a healthy church or plant one. Expectations:
In the first ten Bible stories, all those who are in the group or church will have a clear presentation of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. They will have an opportunity to repent of their sins, believe on redemptive work of Christ on the cross, become children of God and have assurance of salvation. They will be able to share their testimony with others with clarity and conviction. They will also learn the process of preparation and presentation of the Bible story. They will know the Great Commission of our Lord and have clear understanding of who the disciple of Jesus is and grow in discipleship. Over a period of one year, the church will experience growth as each person becomes a disciple of Christ and disciples others. Below are the topics on the fundamentals of the faith (systematic theology), Personal growth (discipleship) and the Church. For notes on the following topics, please contact Babu Ganta. Bible story sessions and doctrinal teaching sessions Each Bible study passage lends itself to many opportunities to teach topics on systematic theology, discipleship and the Church. Teaching on these topics can be combined with Bible Story sessions. For example, when I do a story of Eutychus in Acts 20:7-12, I can spend some time teaching the importance of the church ordinance of the Lord’s Table or Sacraments. When I do a story of Jesus forgiving and healing a paralyzed man in Mark 2:1-12, I will devote the second part of the teaching session to study divinity of Jesus Christ. Doctrines can be taught along with the Stories or taught in separate classes. Proper knowledge of Systematic Theology is very essential for any leader who shares a Bible story.

1 At the Home of Martha and Mary Luke 10:38-42 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 38
40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” 41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
‘Depart from me’ : God’s will is greater than ours. In fact, our will can even often be downright harmful. Martha was busy doing what Jesus never needed or asked for and missed out on the most important thing. It is so easy for us to slip into this kind of situation. If we do not correct our selfish ways, we are in danger of one day facing Jesus and hearing him say, “I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!” (Luke 13:27). This Bible study helps us to examine ourselves.
‘Mary was at His feet while Martha was on her feet! When you spend more time at His feet instead of on your own, you become more effective in your ministry. That’s because as you learn to listen to His Word, you start to make better, wiser decisions. This has an impact even unto eternity! Your ministry will never lack what it needs when you do what God wants you to do.
Jesus responds to those who show hunger for His word. It does not matter who you are, where you are, or when you call out to him. He will always respond. Hebrews 11:6; 2 Chronicles 16:9

2 Jesus Heals a Man with Leprosy Mark 1:40-45 A man with leprosy [a] came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” 41 Jesus was indignant [b] . He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed. 43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: 44 “See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.” 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere. 40
Footnotes: a. Mark 1:40 The Greek word traditionally translated leprosy was used for various diseases affecting the skin. b. Mark 1:41 Many manuscripts Jesus was filled with compassion.
Situation:
Leper had a ‘now or never’ kind of mindset, saw a great opportunity, came to Jesus, and received the priceless gift of new life. Did he end up becoming a follower (disciple) of Jesus? What about you? Is getting a job promotion, success in your business, or physical healing proof that you are a disciple of Jesus? Symptoms of leprosy could be seen as a spot on the body; once that spot showed up, the leper was immediately sent out of their home and out of their job - and left at the mercy of others for food. As outcasts of society, lepers had to hold their hands over the upper lip and shout ‘unclean, unclean!’ whenever they saw people. If anyone touched a leper, they would become ceremonially unclean until they were cleansed! If the leper touched anyone, he could be stoned to death! Lepers have no sense of touch, smell, or pain. For example, if a leper were to hold a hot glass of tea, he would not feel the heat. Lepers suffer from damaged skin, and their fingers are reduced to short stubs. When dust falls in their eyes, there are no tears to cleanse it. As a result, many go blind. And since they cannot smell, lepers don’t even realize when they smell bad. In the absence of treatment, the leper remained excommunicated until death! See Lev 13:45-46. To the Jews who had believed in him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.” John 8:31 “…that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” Matthew 5:45 “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 11

3 Jars of Oil 2 kings 4:1-7 The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the LORD. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.” 2 Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.” Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. 4 Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.” 5 She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. 6 When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.” But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing. 7 She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.” 3
The key to God’s resources in times of difficulty: The ‘company of prophets’ was like Theological College. In those days, the teacher and students lived together. Teaching was not done in a classroom like it is today! In those days, going to man of God in times of difficulty was like going to God himself. But now, we have Jesus as our mediator between us and God. 1 Timothy 2:5

4 Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man Mark 2:1-12 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them.4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!” 6
Context: This story comes after Jesus healed the one leper who disobeyed & told everyone of the healing. After Jesus comes back from the desert, people again flock to him.
God understands and hears your hearts cry: This is a great passage that reveals Jesus as God in the flesh, who has the power and authority to forgive sins. He understands your heart’s cry even if you don’t pour it out in a well-worded prayer! The teachers of the law experienced the shock of their lives as they saw the Messiah in the very same room as them! Teaching the Word - Importance: Mark 2:2; Colossians 1:28-29; 2 Timothy 2:2; Acts 13:44; Ezra 7:10 Jesus has authority to forgive sins. Mark 2:10 (only God can forgive)

5 The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector Luke 18:9-14 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people - robbers, evildoers, adulterers - or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ 9
“But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ 14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” 13
Context: Jesus just spoke to religious leaders, self-righteous Pharisees, known to keep the laws that they wrote about God’s laws. Jesus told them that God answers prayers of His people. Pharisee is a religious person who studies the law, practices and teaches others. He spends most of his time at the temple or synagogue. The law does not expect people to fast two times a week nor expect people to tithe in everything! He takes pride in observing self-imposed extra scriptural rules. Tax collector has reputation of making dishonest money and his Jewish community coupled him with sinners! There are billions of religious people in the world. There are many who like to think they can please God with their good works! But we cannot get into heaven on any righteousness of our own; it’s only by seeking Jesus that we can be saved. Jesus loves sincere seekers and desires for them to know the only key to His Kingdom- Himself. This is a great passage by which we can learn about salvation and what it means to have assurance of that salvation. Grace: Getting what we do not deserve Mercy: NOT getting what we deserve - punishment!
Assurance of salvation: Rom 8:16; I John 5:13; Rom 5:1 and 8:1 Godly sorrow or worldly sorrow? See 2 Corinthians 7:10 Forgiveness: I John 1:9 Authority to be children of God: J ohn 1:12 Who will not inherit the kingdom of God? 6 The Fall Genesis 3:1-15 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” 4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?” 10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” 11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” 12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me - she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 So the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” 7

A This is an amazing story of how the cancer of sin has infected all of us. We see the craftiness of Satan as he sows seeds of doubt and dissatisfaction - even in the midst of God’s abundance!
We can see God’s mercy and love, and His redemptive plan to bring us back to his fold.
God gave a special responsibility to MAN. Failure in this area results in a dysfunctional family! Eve was tempted: 1 Tim 2:14 God held Adam responsible:: Gen 3:9
God created the first humans, Adam and Eve, and abundantly blessed them with all they needed for happiness and communion with Him. Their Garden contained vegetation and beautiful trees, good to look at and good to eat. About one tree, the Lord God said, “Do not eat from it. On the day you eat from it you shall surely die.”

Gen 3:14 Sin brought a curse on all the world. The earth is not the same as it was before Adamʼs fall (v 17; Rom 8:19-22).
Gen 3:15 Here is the first promise of a Saviour for fallen man. He would be born of the woman (the man is not mentioned here. Many scholars think this signifies the virgin birth of Christ. See Isa 7:14; Matt 1:22-23; Gal 4:5). The Saviour will be the bruiser of Satanʼs head – that is, He will destroy Satan and his works (Rom 16:20; Heb 2:14; 1 John 3:8). The final overthrow of Satan is seen in the last book of the Bible (Rev 20:10). The serpent was to bruise the heel of the Saviour. He could hurt and wound Him but not destroy Him. And the wounding of the Saviour was for manʼs benefit (Isa 53:5; 1 Pet 2:24).
Genesis 3:21 The LORD God also made garments of skins for Adam and for his wife, and clothed them.. It seems very probable that there is a picture here of Godʼs way of salvation by sacrifice and grace. Manʼs attempts to hide his guilt and shame cannot succeed. He is not fit to stand before God in his own works. God Himself killed an innocent animal and clothed Adam and Eve. Much later in history God came in the person of Christ and died for sinners. He clothes those who come to Him in His own righteousness. What man is by nature is described in Isa 64:6. By Godʼs grace he can have a perfect covering (Isa 61:10; 1 Cor 1:30). Justification - Gen 15:6; Rom 1:17; 3:21-26; 4:5, 23-25.

7 Jesus Heals a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath Luke 13:10-17 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God. 10
Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, “There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.” 15 The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? 16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?” 17 When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing. 14
Synagogue is a Jewish house of worship, often having facilities for religious instruction.
The crippled woman for 18 years had known a very different world,- limited in her movements and looked down upon by the society; mentally crushed; could not join others in social activities, helpless, trapped in her bent body - what lese? Satan could not stop her from going to the synagogue to hear God’s word. Though she had enough excuses for not going to the synagogue, she went and had a surprise for life from Jesus. She was a walking miracle. Now people look at her with respect. See Psalm 3:3. Jesus did not want her to be kept bound by Satan even for a second longer. In her healing, we see the power of Jesus over Satan. Jesus corrected the thinking of legalistic -minded people. (Tradition: Mark 7:13; Is 112-14) Far more than physical healing: 1 Pet 1:18-19; 1John 3:8.; Mark 10:45 Discuss - ransom, redeemer, redeemed.

8 Story of Tabitha Acts 9:36-43 36 In
Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor. 37 About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room. 38 Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, “Please come at once!” 39 Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them. Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. 41 He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called for the believers, especially the widows, and presented her to them alive. 42 This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord. 43 Peter stayed in Joppa for some time with a tanner named Simon. 40
Every member in the church ought to be a disciple of Jesus! Discipleship is central and crucial to fulfilling the Great Commission of Jesus. This story gives great insight into what it means to be a disciple of Jesus and what it means to be a dynamic Church. A glimpse of heaven can be seen when people are loving and thoughtful of each other’s needs and move at God’s speed in obedience to Him! Sometimes we tend to worry because we do not understand the bigger picture of God’s work in our lives. But our God is dynamic, His church is dynamic, and the lives of his disciples are also dynamic - and full of surprises!
Mark 16:20 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.
Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

9 Abram in Egypt Genesis 12:10-20 10 Now
there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe. 11 As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, “I know what a beautiful woman you are. 12 When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live. 13 Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.” 14 When
Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that Sarai was a very beautiful woman. 15 And when Pharaoh’s officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh, and she was taken into his palace. 16 He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels. But the LORD inflicted serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household because of Abram’s wife Sarai. 18 So Pharaoh summoned Abram. “What have you done to me?” he said. “Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!” 20 Then Pharaoh gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he had. 17
Context: Abraham lived in a pagan land. God called him to leave his country, his relatives, his father’s house and go to a land He would show him. God told Abram that he would be the father of a nation and world would be blessed through him and his descendants. Abram and his wife left, but he took his nephew and his father. After a delay in Haran, Abram made it to the land God appointed. He has no children.
In this story we see Abraham in his weakest moments. We also see God’s mercy and patience. Later, Abraham was able to pass the test of faith with distinction. God was pleased to be known as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob!
God called Abram to leave his country, his relatives, and his father’s house and travel to the land He had promised to him. God told Abram that he would be the father of a great nation & that the world would be blessed through him and his descendants. Abram & his wife left, but Abram took his nephew & father. After a delay in Haran, Abram made it to the land that God had appointed. He had no children at this point.
Abraham has witnessed the redemptive plan of God. God rescued him when he was slipping. See Psalm 23:3

10 Zacchaeus the Tax Collector Luke 19:1-10 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. 5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” 8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” 7
Context: Jesus told His disciples about serving others and about His soon death and resurrection. Now, on His way to Jerusalem to his death, the crowd following Jesus has just seen Him give Bartimaeus sight.
A In this competitive world we live in, to climb to the top of the ladder of power is no small feat. The ‘chief tax collector’ in the story had money and a high position of power. He was a prisoner of selfishness! Upon meeting Jesus, though, he was set free. His values and worldview were changed forever. Tax collectors were known to overcharge the people in order to line their own pockets and were treated like any other sinners. The Roman government employed Jews to collect taxes from the Jewish community, so tax collectors were hated by the Jews. ‘unless the Father draws them..’ John 6:44 Salvation : Acts 4:12; John 5:24 Son of Abraham : Gen 15:6; Rom 4:11, 16 Luke 19:8 Zacchaeus chose a new master that day and called Him “Lord”. Up until then, his master had been money (16:13). He is one of the few rich men who enter Godʼs kingdom (18:24-25), and he is in great contrast to the rich fool in 12:16, the rich man in 16:19, and the rich young ruler of 18:23. But he did not get into Godʼs kingdom simply by saying Lord to Jesus (Matt 7:21). He revealed that he had a true faith in Him by what he did. Zacchaeus was willing to do what many were not willing to do (16:14; Matt 19:21-24). This showed the work of God in his heart. 22

The Great Commission and Who is the Disciple of Christ? The Great Commission of our Lord Jesus Christ: Matthew 28:18-20

drew near and said to them, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Go,
then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples:
baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, 20 and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you.
And I will be with you always, to the end of the age.
Is it necessary for a church goer to be a disciple of Christ? If one is not a disciple of Christ, can he be a real Christian?

Let us see who Disciples of Jesus are.
Disciples of Jesus To help us remember this better, let us imagine that you are looking at a room which has three windows. 1.Called, 2. Born 3. Redeemed and Rescued. It is like looking into a room through three windows! 1.Called: Imagine Jesus calling Peter to follow him. Disciple is the one who has heard the invitation or the call by the teacher, left everything and followed the Teacher. Luke 9:23; John 15:19. The teacher is given the first place in their lives - more than things, others, family members even their own lives. Luke 14:33; Galatians 2:20; Matthew 6:10 They depend on God every need. Luke 21:4; Mark 10:21; John 15:4 Their satisfaction and delight is only in Christ. John 4:13,14; 1 Peter 1:8 Their goal is to do God’s will for them. Philippians 3:12 They always obey their Teacher. John 14:15; 8:31; Matthew 7:21
They are baptized in obedience to His command. Matthew 28:19; Colossians 2:8-15; Romans 6:3-4 They display selfless love for one another. John 13:35
They are called to be holy. 1 John 3:3; 1 Peter 1:15

2. Born: The second angle to see what it is to be disciples of Christ is that they are born into God’s family. Imagine a newly born child: hunger, growth etc are signs of health and of life. They are born again. Their values and world view have changed. They have become the members of God’s family. John 3:3; Ephesians 1:3-10; Acts 8:37-38; 1 Peter 1:23-25; John 15:19; 1:11-12. Hunger: Just like a new born child is hungry, they are hungry for God’s Word. 1Peter 2:2; Acts 17:1
Growth: They grow into Christlikeness as they study God’s Word and know His will for them. 2 Corinthians 3:18; Galatians 4:19; Romans 12:2 They are a new creation. 2 Corinthians 5:17 3. Redeemed and Rescued: The third angle to see what it is to be disciples of Christ is that they are redeemed and Rescued. Redeemed means they are purchased at a price to be set free. Galatians 3:15; 1 Peter 1:19; Revelations 5:9; 1 John 2:2 has a special word - propitiation. It means paying the price to remove the anger of God. They are now owned by the one who paid the price. 1 Corinthians 7:23; 6:19-20 Rescue: Imagine a person rescued from the burning house debris of a collapsed house after an earth quake or someone rescued from the grip of captors or hostage takers. They are rescued from the jaws of death. We have been rescued by God. Colossians 1:13 Who were their captors?
Satan, sinful world and sinful flesh who had enslaved them. 1 Peter 2:1-2;2, 22; Ephesians 2:1-3; 6:10-13; Romans 8:12,13; 6:20; John 8:34; Now they are on their guard and not continue in sin. 1 John3:6,9 25

They are now sure of their safety. They have assurance of their salvation. Romans 8:16; 1 John 5:13; Ephesians 1:13 They set matters right if they have wronged others. Luke 19:8 They always examine themselves and keep their conscience clean. Psalm 139:23; Acts 23:1; 24:16; 1 Peter 3:16; 1 John 3:21 They are led by the new Master i.e. the Spirit of God. Romans 8:14 They are gladly involved in making others - disciples of Jesus. Matthew 28:18-20; 2 Timothy 2:2.

God’s plan of Salvation How to become a child of God (Disciple of Jesus Christ)? Journey of faith starts by realizing that I am going in a wrong direction and take a U-turn. That means to acknowledge I am a 1sinner. I have lived a life of rebellion and indifference to God. I say to God - am sorry. I 2repent of my sins. I believe what God says in His Word - 3As many as received Him, He gave the power to become sons of God. I also believe that Jesus Christ, by his 4death on the cross, took the punishment I should have received. The promise in 1 John 1:9 is like a blank cheque signed by God. 5‘But if we confess our sins to God, he will keep his promise and do what is right: he will forgive us our sins and purify us from all our wrongdoing’ God never goes back on His promise. I take His word by faith and accept His forgiveness. Now that I have this valuable gift from God, I thank Him for His forgiveness and welcoming me into His family. I also said sorry to all those whom I hurt. There is a clear 6change in my behaviour (thoughts, actions and reactions), and what I value most. I notice the change within me. My friends and family too see it. I feel 7terribly uncomfortable - talking, thinking or acting or behaving the way I used to in the past. It is continuous struggle in my life but I enjoy the freedom from all the things that had enslaved me. God gives me 8guarantee in my spirit that I am God’s child. This is how one is born into God’s family. It is also called being 9born again. 10Now I am not ashamed to say that I am God’s child.

Importance of Sharing your testimony. It is a matter of great joy to share with others when something very nice happened in your life. For example - if you just got married, or got a visa to a dream country, bought a beautiful car, built a house and so on. Some hide their excitement and joy because they do not want others to think they are showing off. Some keep it private and confidential. After Peter responded to the Good News of Jesus and joined God’s family he describes his feelings ‘joy unspeakable full of glory’ 1 Peter 1:8. He also says to be prepared to give reason for his hope. 1 Peter 3:15 Paul says in Romans 1:16 ‘for I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ because it is the power of God unto salvation. In Acts 1:8 All those who have responded to the Gospel and filled with the spirit would be witnesses to the end of the earth. Sharing a testimony - Guidelines 1. I have realized I was a sinner. 2. I repented of my sins. 3. I believed that Jesus bore on the cross the punishment of my sins. He died and rose again. 4. Not because of any works of charity but by His grace God welcomed me into His family. He gave me His peace and joy. I believe what the Bible says in John 1:12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God 5. I now have assurance of salvation because of the Holy Spirit. 6. I am now hungry for His Word. I am no longer comfortable when I slip and fall into sin. 7. I know within myself the change in my live. Even my friends and family have noticed change in my life. 8. Some were happy to know that I have become the follower of Jesus. Other were not. They insulted me and made my life difficult. God helped me to cope with it. 9. I set right with people whom I have wronged or hurt. 10. When I was helpless and hopeless, He showed mercy and kindness and made me His child. He gave me value and goal to my life. 11. I can never adequately thank my Lord for what He has done in my life. Have you ever heard a testimony where one says: I had a great sickness. A man or a woman of God prayer for me. I am now healed. That is why I am a child of God. I was unemployed for a long time. An evangelist or a pastor prayed for me. Immediately I got a job that is why I am a child of God. I had a difficulty in my business or job. A very religious person prayed for me. Now I have success in my business. That is why I know I am a child of God. ‘For he makes his sun to shine on bad and good people alike, and gives rain to those who do good and to those who do evil.’ Matthew 5:45 Obedience is the Key (not the miracles in life!). ‘So Jesus said to those who believed in him, “If you obey my teaching, you are really my disciples’ ‘John 8:31. 29

How to learn a Story? (Two ways)
1. Hear the story and learn it. Listen to the story being told or read. (The leader can read or ask
someone to read clearly and loudly. You can play the story on audio player if you have Audio scripture available.) This is very useful if there are some in the group who cannot read.
Close Your Eyes! Retell the Story OUT LOUD From Memory. Listen to the Story as it is read again (by the same person or any other
person), Close your eyes and tell the story OUT LOUD.
Tell and check until you can go through accurately. Repeat these steps
until you know the story well.
Keep telling the whole story out loud with your eyes closed, until you
repeat it accurately.
2. Read the story aloud and learn it. Pray for the ability to remember and understand the story and to tell it
accurately and with enthusiasm.
Read the Story Through Once OUT LOUD. Close your Bible and close your eyes! Retell the story OUT LOUD
From Memory.
Read the Story OUT LOUD Another Time. Again, Close your Bible,
Close your eyes and tell the story OUT LOUD.
Tell and check until you can go through accurately.
Repeat these steps until you know the story well. By doing this, you
will know the story inside and out sooner than you think.
Note: Reading aloud will block out distracting sounds and presses the story into your memory. Closing your eyes as you tell the story allows you to see it. Picture the people and the surroundings in your mind.

Bible Story – Presentation Guidelines:
Introduction Tell the Story Spiritual Observations Spiritual Applications God Me
1. Introduction: (It has to be short) Link: Something special about this story. Situation: The problem or the tension in the story. Context: The back ground – what has happened before the story. Difficult words - explain if there are any difficult words) 2. Tell the Story The leader tells the story with actions. Lead through the Story. (The leader starts the story, asks questions or uses incomplete sentences, invites people to complete the story.) Practice in Pairs (or a volunteer tells the story) 3 . Spiritual Observations. What does the person Say or Do? Ask a question - What does it tell about that person? The answers give us Spiritual Observations. Then, ask - What is the result? (of what is spoken or done) Finally ask: Who are all impacted? Example: In the story of Jars of Oil, the widow went to the man of God in times of difficulty. (What she did). The result was the man of God received God’s solution to her problem. Everyone witnessed the miracle of God’s provision to the widow and her children. (impact) Note: when you notice what each person said or did in the story, also study if that person has a choice to say or do differently. (choices and other choices). Say, Do – Choices – Other Choices – Result and Impact. 31

4. Spiritual Applications State each Spiritual observation and ask: Today does this happen? In what ways does it happen? Can you think of an example in your life or in others’? 5. God (What can we learn about God from this story?) 6. Me (How will the lessons in this Bible study help me now and in future?) 7. Prayer: Close with Prayer.
Bible Story – Preparation 1. Pray - God help me to learn the story well and find the spiritual observations (treasures) in the passage. 2. Learn the story. 3. Find Spiritual Observations by sections. 4. Convert the Spiritual Observations into Spiritual Applications. 5. Part of the preparation is to take note of any difficult words in the passage that need explanation. 6. Give some thought to the introduction to this passage.
Story Rounds Preparation needs about 45 minutes. In the last 10 minutes, choose a volunteer. He or she will have an opportunity to share the story with another group who have never studied this passage. Leader helps the volunteer choose 3 or 4 Spiritual Observations. Discuss if there are any difficult words that need explanation. Practice how to lead through the story; how to ask questions to get spiritual observations; how to convert the Spiritual Observations into Spiritual Applications. Presentation is done in 30 minutes. If all the Spiritual Observations are not covered, it is okay. At this stage, what is important is to know the procedure of doing the Bible Study. Leader accompanies the volunteer to the new group. He has liberty to gently interrupt if the volunteer leader goes off track and bring him or her back into the process. The leader notes down the minor mistakes and brings them to the volunteer’s attention after the Bible study.

Converting Spiritual Observations into Spiritual Applications. Take one of the few spiritual observations you have made.
