PUBLISHER’S VIEW| DR. LEI LEWIS According to research, “as chronic diseases rise, the burden of care for patients at home disportionately falls on women; resulting in huge implications for women’s participation in the workforce and the health of female caregivers.”

H

ow exciting! The sights and sounds of Christmas are with us once again. For me Christmas is one of the most favorite times of the year. It is a time to remember God’s gift to the world, his Son Jesus Christ. It is a time when families stop what they are doing and come together bearing gifts for each other. For me it is a time of reflection and assessment. I love this time of the year. Thank you for including WOW Magazine as a part of your reading material. Each issue we hope to bring a new, thought provoking and challenging segment to our publication. Starting with this issue we are excited to debut “Health Wise” an exciting and informative new section on women’s health. You’ve heard the cliché” a “woman’s work is never done” neither is the awesome challenge of staying healthy.

Think about it, “Good health is also wealth.”

In HealthWise, we will share health related information from medical specialists and others with an important perspective on Women’s Health.

4

As women, we invest tremendous time managing our businesses and careers and, unfortunately, too often to the detriment of our own health. It is no secret that good health is our greatest asset; therefore, the most important goal should be the protection of that asset. Before the balance sheets are reviewed, before that all-important business meeting, we must ensure that we prioritize our lives by taking care of “first things first…..our health.”

No client, board, dinner or “other meeting” is more important than our “health meeting” with the doctor. As we enjoy the holiday season, I encourage all of us to re-purpose our lives by investing time concentrating on our health by making an effort to understand and listen to our bodies. It is easy to reschedule the doctor’s appointment and ignore those little annoying aches and symptoms that pop up from time to time. Many of us, habitually, have conditioned our lives where we literally function day to day on auto-pilot. Our busy schedule demands it. Those periodic annoyances are nothing more than Mother Nature’s subtle way of trying to get our attention but because we are fixated on finishing the task at hand we, unfortunately, ignore the signals until the problem is exacerbated.

| WOMENOFWEALTHMAGAZINE.COM

Obviously, women featured in WOW lead very busy and successful lives. They are not only focused on their respective field of endeavors, most also devote an inordinate amount of time attending to family demands. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, “women are major consumers of health care services, negotiating not only their own complex health care but often managing care for their family members as well.: It is a well documented that women serve as the “Chief Medical Officer” in most families.

tatus…Prestige… Fur Coat…Synonymous? Realizing that fashions derived from actual animal skins were no longer politically correct or in keeping with her own core values, Donna Sayler has built an entrepreneurial empire wrapping the famous and not so famous in her fabulous faux fur designs and creations. “Inspiration for Fabu lous-Fu rs came nearly two decades ago when I was on my way to purchase a mink coat. On my car radio, Paul Harvey described kittens being skinned to become “mink” teddy bears. Instead of buying a coat that day, I was inspired to create a luxurious alternative. Not in my wildest dreams did I imagine that Fabulous-Furs would evolve into fine ready-to-wear, attracting a clientele ...of high-profile, internationally recognized celebrities. As a real-life Cinderella, it’s fabulous to see our guilt-free products in movies, on TV and Broadway. It’s gratifying to know that our products, in providing a luxurious alternative to real animal fur, bring joy to people all over the world, and at the same time, make unnecessary the destruction of countless

animals.”Wanting a the look and feel of a fur coat without cruelty, the always creative designer Donna, fashioned a replica coat for herself out of synthetic fibers over 20 years ago. “I received so many compliments on my own coat that I thought to myself…I should create a kit for women who wanted their own furs as well.” After seeing Donna’s coat kit, actress Loretta Switt famous for her role on the iconic MASH television series, contacted her. ”I want a coat and I don’t sew. How can I get one?” Donna bounced back “I will have our ‘Ready to Wear Department’ whip one up for you.” Donna sat down at her sewing machine and created Switt’s custom faux fur, and the rest as they say is history. Fabulous furs was propelled into its second incarnation. In addition to coats, Fab Furs offers a great selection of accessories all with an animal print or faux fur theme. Shoes, hats, gloves, glasses and jewelry complete the collection. Various accessory items for the home are also part of the mix. Visit www. fabulousfurs.com or scan the code with your mobile phone. BREAKING NEW GROUND AT

MOREHOUSE Dr. Montgomery Rice, a pioneer in women’s health, became the new Dean and Executive Vice President for Morehouse School of Medicine June 27, 2011 where she assumed the responsibilities for oversight of academics, research, community health, and education and training programs while continuing to guide the advancement of patient care. She has traveled throughout the world giving speeches, participating in workshops as a prolific speaker and advocate of women’s health. She has earned national and international recognition for her commitment and dedication to eliminating disparities in women’s healthcare. An innovator and a power player in the field of medicine she shares “I am a Georgia native and received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Georgia Institute of Technology and a medical degree from Harvard University Medical School. I completed my residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Emory University School of Medicine and a fellowship in reproductive endocrinologist and infertility at Hutzel Hospital in Detroit.” She has held numerous positions at the University Of Kansas School Of Medicine prior to joining Meharry Medical College; including Director, Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Vice Chair, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Medical Director, Clinical Trials Division, Clinical Research. Dr. Rice is a founder of the Center for Women’s Health Research, one of the nation’s first research centers devoted to studying diseases that disproportionately impact women of color

Contrary to what people may know about her background and her somewhat humble, homegrown beginnings, Dr. Rice shares, “I am an investment, a product of Georgia’s Public School System from Macon, Georgia.” I want people to know that investing in our young people is the most important investment one can make as they will determine our future.” Dr. Montgomery Rice is a prolific speaker and advocate of women’s health; she has given more than 500 talks and participated in workshops and conferences throughout the world. Her acumen and the many contributions she has made as a professional in women’s health and research have earned her national and international recognition, particularly, through her unwavering commitment to eliminating disparities in women’s healthcare. Estremely passionate about the field of research. She has spent the last 15-20 years of her career studying women’s health issues including a major focus on research in the arena of reproductive endocrinology and infertility. When asked about the most pressing health issues facing woman today Dr. Rice responded without hesitation…“In my view, obesity is a major health factor for women as it increases the burden of other diseases and changes the outcome of many health problems.” When asked to share her vision for Morehouse School of Medicine, with utmost passion, she said: “My vision is that Morehouse School of Medicine continues to be the voice for the underserved leading research development to train the next cadre of health professionals and continuing its strong role in health education to eliminate health disparities.” In the course of this work, we will enhance and embrace new technologies while developing partnerships through collaboration in making a difference on a larger platform.” “We are on a mission to educate health leaders of tomorrow, effectively engage communities while developing science that will change the world and, I am ecstatic about leading that charge.” Does Mentorship play a part in this vision? I have always told people that the equalizer is mentorship. If you have the right mentor and you are willing to work hard, you can be successful. The importance of mentors is they keep you from making so many mistakes and repeating those you have made. Mentors share knowledge with you. They are your sounding board, such that they help keep you on course.

Portrait skin regeneration is unlike any other facial treatment available today. It is not a laser, radio frequency, or light-based treatment. It is a completely new plasma energy technology that works both on and below the surface of the skin to modify the skin’s architecture so that new collagen is generated. Portrait® is effective in reducing the look of fine wrinkles and deep wrinkles, treating skin with sun damage, improving skin tone and texture, improving an acne scar* and tightening skin. It works on a variety of skin types, easily without the costs or down time of plastic surgery. During your short procedure at the Atlanta Wellness & Aesthetics office in Atlanta, Doctor Sarah Ghayouri uses Portrait® to transfer plasma energy to the treated area without direct contact to the skin. This technique preserves the skin’s outer layers which act as a protective dressing until new skin regenerates. Unlike plastic surgery, downtime is minimal. Clinical studies show that the improvements you see following your treatment will become even more dramatic over time. True skin regeneration for smoother, more beautiful skin care. Portrait® skin regeneration can be used to treat an entire facial area or a specific facial area. Treatment for an entire face can take as little as 20 minutes; a regional treatment can be as short as 10 –15 minutes. Shortly after, you will see improvements in your skin texture and tone and diminished wrinkles giving you a new, more vibrant and youthful appearance. Over time you will see continuing improvement that is truly unique. The results are comparable to aggressive laser resurfacing but the downtime is dramatically reduced. It keeps working, stimulating collagen production that has a unique matrix and increasing elastin for up to one year with continued improvement to the skin. And, Portrait® skin care is safe and effective. It gives you the facial results you want without the lengthy downtime or the risks associated with plastic surgery.

Here are the alternatives you should consider, all of which are available in easy treatments in our Buckhead office in Atlanta.

Position Your Bed for Power

Be as far from the door as possible. There is likely more than one place to put your bed, and if you have a choice and it is aesthetically pleasing to you, place your bed as far from the door as possible. The best position for your head is in the corner farthest from the door. The further from the door you are, the more empowered the position is. In the gangster example, the further he is from the door, the safer he is. He has more time to prepare himself to fight any “enemies” who might walk through the door.

Avoid situating your bed in the direct path of the doorway. Stand at the entrance of your bedroom and imagine a light the width of the door shining into the room. Anywhere the light hits is considered the “path of the doorway”. This path is like a strong windy tunnel of unseen, fast-moving energy. When you sleep in the path of the doorway, you have to work to “fend off ” this strong flow, thereby losing personal energy while you’re sleeping. It’s energetically calmer to sleep anywhere in the room other than in this pathway. A common misconception is that sleeping with your feet pointing at the door is “bad”. This is a problem only if your feet are pointing at the door while you are sleeping in the path of the door. By Alice Inoue What if I told you that the position of your bed and where you sleep each night has a great effect on your life, your health and your disposition? Would you believe me? I didn’t believe it until I started this line of work and witnessed hundreds of cases of “proof ” that there is something to it. Bed positioning is extremely important in feng shui. No matter what school of feng shui you follow, it’s a foundational aspect of the philosophy, as it has a relationship to how you position yourself in life, which in turn has an effect on how empowered you are and, to a degree, how successful you are.

Gangsters and animals know positioning The next time you watch a movie that shows a head mob guy sitting in a restaurant, notice that he’s always sitting in what is known in feng shui as the “power position”. He is far from the door, usually in the far corner, facing the door, so that no one can surprise attack him from behind, and he can see who comes in the door.

26

| WOMENOFWEALTHMAGAZINE.COM

In the same way, animals position themselves to face the door so that all they need to do is open one eye to see who is approaching.

Empowered bed positioning Feng shui uses the same concept in bed positioning. If you put yourself in an em powering position you create a better energy for you to be empowered. Here are the “power position” guidelines:

Be able to see the door from the bed. This means that when you are lying in bed, you need only open your eyes to see the door; you don’t have to turn your head or crane your neck. At our deepest level, we feel most secure in this position.

If you have no choice but to position yourself in the path of the door, with feet pointing at the door, place a small table at the foot of your bed with a plant or large crystal that will buffer some of the energy so you don’t have to process it all.

This will energetically serve to deflect the draining energy of the bathroom. Hold this as your intention when you are installing the mirror.

Consider the bigger picture Some people position their beds against a solid wall because they have read that it is “bad” feng shui to have your head under a window. Although having your head under a window is not as favorable as a solid wall, it’s far better than to sleep in a position where you cannot see the door. If you have a window above your head, close the curtains or shades at night to cover up the “hole” in the wall to be energetically protected.

Use your down time for support By sleeping in an empowered position, you can use the “down” time while you are sleeping to your utmost advantage – not only get more peaceful rest but to give yourself an opportunity to be your best self each day!

Alice Inoue is a life guide that uses the modalities of feng shui, astrology and spirituality in her work. Her offerings include award-winning, mind-body-spirit themed books, as well as a series of feng shui instructional DVD’s. For more information visit www.aliceinspired. com. Sign up for her newsletter to receive monthly articles on feng shui, astrology and life wisdom.

Avoid having the wall to the bathroom behind your head. The bathroom consists of many drains, so the energy of the bathroom is draining. When you sleep with your head against the wall of the bathroom, it “pulls away” some of your body’s energy. The most energetically draining wall is the one with the toilet attached to it. If you have no other choice but to keep your bed in this position, place a small mirror on the headboard, or on the wall just below the top of the mattress, in the approximate area where you lay your head, with the mirror side facing the bathroom. You can purchase a four to six inch diameter mirror at a craft store and use double-stick mirror tape to attach it.

Bestselling book, On Toby’s Terms (Bettie Youngs Books, 2010) is an endearing story of a beguiling creature who teaches his owners that, despite their trying to teach him how to be the dog they want, he is the one to lay out the terms of being the dog he needs to be. This insight would change their lives forever. “Simply a beautiful book about life, love and purpose:. —Jack Canfield, Co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul When Charmaine and her husband adopted Toby, a fiveyear-old Chesapeake Bay retriever, they figured he might need some adjusting time, but they certainly didn’t count on what he’d do in the meantime. Soon after he entered their lives and home, Toby proved to be a holy terror who routinely opened and emptied the hall closet, turned on water taps, pulled and ate things from the bookshelves, sat for hours on end in the sink, and spent his days rampaging through the house. Oddest of all was his penchant for locking himself in the bathroom, and then pushing the lid of the toilet off the tank, smashing it to pieces. After a particularly disastrous encounter with the knife-block in the kitchen— and when the couple discovered Toby’s bloody paw prints on the phone— they decided Toby needed professional help. Little did they know what they would discover about this dog. Toby is a big, brown, happy dog. Every week, his owner,

Deborah Scott Thomas | Data Solutions & Technology, Incorporated Deborah Scott Thomas is the President and CEO of Data Solutions & Technology Incorporated (DST), a consulting company headquartered in Lanham, Maryland. She founded the company in 1994 with a specific vision in mind; a successful company that provides outstanding customer service while effecting positive change for her employee family. She dreamed of a company that would be built on the 3 R’s: respect, reputation, and reliability. Through hard work and dedication she has grown the company by more than 200 employees in the United States and abroad. DST’s core capabilities are management support, information technology, logistics and operations, aviation management, and scientific and technical services. Clients are a who’s who of federal agencies, to include the Department of Energy; Department of Defense; Defense Intelligence Agency; Defense Information Systems Agency; and Department of Commerce. Her commitment community service, mentoring, and excellence has earned her numerous awards and recognitions, most recently, the Spelman College Legacy of Leadership Award; The Network Journal’s 25 Influential Black Women in 2011; the Lifetime Achievement Award from The Center for HBCU Media Advocacy, Inc.; the Distinguished Hornet Entrepreneurial Award from the Alabama State University (ASU) National Alumni Association’s Philadelphia Chapter; and the first Silhouette of Service Award from Alabama State University’s College of Business Administration. Where do you see DST going in the next decade? We will continue to maintain the company’s number one priority: 100% Customer Satisfaction! We will continue to be one of the best consulting companies in the nation, one that effects positive change for people. We will continue to help educational institutions grow and cultivate productive citizens, such as my alma mater, Alabama State University, and Bowie State University (BSU). Are you and your company involved in your community? Absolutely! We are truly committed to giving back

44

to the community. For instance, DST employees have contributed time, energy, spirit, and donations to help make the annual March of Dimes March for Babies fundraiser an overwhelming success. For six consecutive years DST has been a Top 5 Team for Prince George’s County March for Babies. Moreover, I serve on several advisory boards, such as the Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation and BSU’s College of Arts & Sciences. Giving of our time and finances is oftentimes the tipping point for our community reaching its true potential and becoming a ‘place of choice’ for people to live and work. One of my role models, Edie Fraser, tells us to “ generously support others in every way that we can.” What played a role in you reaching your goals? My roots began in the beautiful state of Alabama where my family were farmers. I one of seven children. Even though we lost our father early in life, he had a tremendous impact on our lives. My mother instilled in my siblings and me a solid foundation – courage, giving, sharing, being the best we could be, compassion, and strength of character. Two of my mother’s favorite principles of life, which I have always used as touchstones, are: 1.

Put God first in your life, and all will be given to you

2. Get an education from Alabama State University (ASU) and you can go any where in the world. So, I live by these every day and am grateful for ASU where I also received my Air Force commission. For many of us the preparation to become a successful entrepreneur involves general and specific knowledge. I find that successful entrepreneurs are those who hunger for experience, knowledge, and find challenges and obstacles to be opportunities for growth, for example, my

military experiences has help shape my life and provided the foundation for my leadership skills. While in the military I earned a master’s degree which increased my overall management abilities. After serving my country for more than three decades I retired as a Colonel from the United States Air Force Reserve. Moreover, I have also worked for Fortune 100 companies as well as small businesses which enhanced my knowledge of business. Likewise, it was also important for me that while building the company I devote quality time for my family. I am married to an entrepreneur, Oatice Thomas, who is President and CEO of Operations & Technology Incorporated. We have three awesome sons who are striving to make a positive impact on the world. I believe a balanced life entails enjoying every aspect of your time on this earth. So we must purposely carve out time to enjoy the people and things that we identify as being important to us. Can you expound on your activities that bring education, industry and government together? Definitely! We are hosting the second annual national HBCU entrepreneurship conference at Ala-

bama State University on March 5-7, 2012. The goals of the conference are to enable attendees the opportunity to learn about business development; entrepreneurship; grants; contracting; and fellowships. Last year our conference had a special focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Conference attendees will come from federal, state and local agencies; corporations; small businesses; higher education community, including faculty, staff, students and alumni; and high school students interested in attending college. The HBCU entrepreneurship conference brings together the holy trinity: industry, government and education. The conference participants have an opportunity to develop relationships and partnerships that can help them be successful in their undertakings. Many successful entrepeneurs that I know have failed many times in different ventures but those that PERSEVERE have a greater chance of success. SUCCESS is so different to so many different people, so each woman really has to ask herself how they measure success and what is their ultimate goal?

Laurie A. Sossa | Southern Barter Club Tell us about Southern Barter Club SBC is a national membership based trading organization where members earn and spend trade dollars instead of cash dollars for their transactions. Our market place is for large and small businesses to earn buying power in the form of trade currency as they offer their professional services, inventory and available resources to other members within the network.

Laurie A. Sossa CEO, Founder, Southern Barter Club, Inc. CEO, Founder, Eco-Trade Global, LLC

Bartering Your Way To Success

SBC is a parallel economy and alternative market place for businesses. Our brokers bring buying power to our members and help them acquire needed goods and services without using cash. Our trade currency is reportable income to the IRS. We are a third party record keeper for all trade transactions. We have ah online barter store and trading platform as well as a brick and mortar showroom filled with hard goods available without cash as well as certificates for a wide variety of goods and services. SBC hostsmonthly networking events for our members to meet other businesses that trade, trade shows, and we have our very own social media platform where members can connect, trade and network online within the SBC community. Tell me about going green and some of the work you do outside SBC. We recently launched our sister company, Eco-Trade Global consisting of eco-friendly and sustainable businesses that reuse and recycle and trade. This directory is for those looking to run their business using green businesses or if they want to adapt to a green life style they can tap into this resource to easily find green businesses they can connect, network and trade with. I am also involved with several non-profits and serve on the board of directors for the World Chamber of Commerce and chair the committee for barter and global trading. I recommend that any cash strapped non-profit use trading their memberships and sponsorships to fund the growth of their organization. One of the initiatives of the WCC is sustaining the environment which inspired me to form Ecotrade global. I also host a local television show called Barter is Better which brings general awareness to barter. We interview local businesses in the studio and on-site at their business, that share their true life success stories about using barter to run their business and personal life. There is a lot of interest with this topic especially with the state of the economy.

What kind of businesses can we expect to find in your network? Our network includes large and small corporations, small business owners, business organizations, nonprofits, chambers of commerce, service providers and basically any one with goods, services or resources that are open to earning and using our community trade currency.

46

| WOMENOFWEALTHMAGAZINE.COM

Is trading limited to Southern Barter Club members and only in the southeast? We belong to two international reciprocal trading organizations. These strong alliances with other barter exchanges nation wide, expand trading opportunities for our members. The trade currency we share is actually global. Members can acquire local and national advertising in print, billboard, radio and TV as well as graphic design services, printing, office equipment and repair, legal services, healthcare services, dining, hotel accommodations and more with SBC members and upwards of 50,000 other businesses owners that trade within the trade network.

What is your inspiration and what are satisfying aspects of what you do? I get tremendous satisfaction from my work but at the end of the day it is really my family that inspires me the most I often come across businesses and non profits that are I need of funding or additional revenue and they don’t realize they actually have their very own private currency in the form of their goods and services they can offer so it’s great to be able to introduce them to the concept of organized trade and help them help themselves. I find it very satisfying working closely with many non-profits that really do so much for people in the community and for businesses and it’s very rewarding being involved and being able to support them.

What advice can you share with aspiring female entrepreneurs on being successful? Don’t give up. Many successful entrepreneurs that I know have failed many times in different ventures but those that persevere have a greater chance of success. Success is so different to so many different people, so each woman really has to ask herself how they measure success and what is their ultimate goal? Success is not only measured by how much money one makes, but also about attaining peace and contentment along with a great quality of life. When asked what business I am in, I respond by saying that I am in the networking business and I also trade- so I can’t emphasize enough how important networking is and the doors that it opens. Equally, important is making time to mentor and help others by sharing what you have learned from your own life’s journey. And obviously, I encourage anyone starting a business that wants to grow their business, to make sure that they incorporate organized trading as a component to their business model as it will attract new business, help use under utilized assets , minimize cash outlay and increase their bottom line. Throughout my career I have learned to recognize when another person is in need and to PAY IT FORWARD, which helps me to respect what has been given to me. I ensure I instill that concept in my children as well as other children with whom I am in contact. It is important to give back.”

Juanita Ann Bates | Anuschka Health Care Group Club Juanita, what inspired you to pursue a career in healthcare? My dream started from what my mother told me when I was young. She instilled many core values within me and also told me that if a person shows, kindness, compassion and love; and have given it unconditionally with no expectations; they would have in turn given the greatest gift any person can give. As I grew older I realized that I wanted to be that person to others and be able to give a voice to the weak, disabled, and emotionally or physically challenged people in the world.

What impact has being an African-American woman had on your chosen career? As an African American woman I realize that I have even more responsibility to be a role model and success for little African American girls out there. They unfortunately do not have many role models so it’s important that they are aware that people like me exist. It’s similar to President Barack Obama demonstrating to African American boys and girls to realize that they, too, can be President of the United States one day.

What are the most difficult challenges you face in your career? One of the most difficult challenges that I am constantly facing is also what has brought me this far in my career and that is my big heart. Because I have such compassion for people I wanted to help everyone and that can be a challenge.

Do you feel that women in general have a more difficult time succeeding in your field versus their male counterparts? I’ve always been determined to do what I am passionate about. While the executive side of the medical industry is make dominated, women who love to see people healthy and happy will succeed if they are passionate and determined regardless of their gender.

How have you overcome them? I’ve become better about realizing that I cannot do it all and have surrounded myself with key people who are helping me implement and spread my vision of love and kindness. How did you develop the concept of Anuschka Healthcare? The word Anuschka means “like no other” and can never be duplicated. I’ve always wanted to provide rehabilitation facilities, and with my unique concept and design I know it will be successful.

52

| WOMENOFWEALTHMAGAZINE.COM

What is your vision for Anuschka in 10 years? To keep growing and expanding as a company. What legacy do you hope to leave for future generations? That hard work, persistence and dedication pays off. Throughout my career I have learned to recognize when another person is in need and to pay it forward, which helps me to respect what has been given to me. I ensure I instill that concept in my children as well as other children with whom I am in contact. It is important to give back.”

During his first year in office he increased the city’s reserves from $7.4 million dollars to $56 million dollars. He has improved fire rescue response times, hired over 200 police officers and reopened all the city’s recreational centers.

In an interview with WOW magazine Mayor Reed was asked:

How does the position of Mayor help you to empower women of Atlanta?

“I have a continued commitment to women owned businesses. “I have a strong relationship with my mother who helped to shape my opinion on how vital women are to an organization that functions well.”

During Mayor Reed’s term, Hartsfield Jackson Airport has spent more than one billion dollars with women and minority owned firms. Out of seven most senior positions in Mayor Reed’s administration five are held by women. Candace Byrd is Chief of Staff. Ms. Byrd is one of only two women in the history of the city of Atlanta to hold the position. Cathy Hampton is a graduate of Spelman College & Harvard Law School. Cathy Hampton is the City Attorney. Joya De Foor is the Chief Financial Officer. Sonji Jacobs Dade is Director of Communications & Duriya Farooqui is the Deputy Chief Operating Officer. “Not only do I believe in the talent, merit and value that women bring to an organization, I live it in a verifiable way. This administration has as many women in positions of leadership as any in at least the last four years.”

Did you ever have a mentor/s?

“My mother and father were mentors to me, as well as my three brothers Charles, Carlton and Tracy. They were the most important sources of mentorship and examples of what to be as a man.” Mayor Reed’s parents divorced when he was in the seventh grade. His parents remained untied in raising him. He not only believes his mother and father served as mentors to him, but sends a powerful message to families where African-American children are being raised in homes in which the parents

What is your vision for the city of Atlanta?

How do Women-Owned Firms in Georgia compare to Women-Owned Firms in other parts of the country?

“I envision Atlanta becoming a world class city. Atlanta is on the path to being one of the leading cities in the world. It will take a lot of work and time but we have the assets for it. Hartsfield Jackson Airport is the busiest airport in the world. Atlanta is fourth in the nation with the number of fortune 500 companies based in the metro Atlanta area. Atlanta is still a very young city.”

What are your goals for small business?

Atlanta has made path breaking changes to provide opportunities to small businesses. We have a program that I believe to be unmatched.” Commerce Connect is a program that links business owners with federal, state, local and non-profit resources. “I applaud U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke for bringing CommerceConnect services to the city of Atlanta.”

How will this affect women owned businesses?

Newly cross-trained Commerce staff working in existing local department offices is assisting Atlanta area businesses which include women owned businesses. Assistance is available no matter where the business owner is in their business life cycle, whether just getting off the ground or looking to expand into overseas markets – in collaboration with state and local partners. Mayor share with us your spiritual aspirations?

I try to speak in a church at least once a month. “God has a calling on my life. He certainly has demonstrated that he has his hand on my life and I have a witness to share based upon my experience with Jesus Christ. It is so gratifying for me to be able to visit a church and share my witness.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

“I see myself as the Mayor of Atlanta. I’ve never been happier in my life. I receive great satisfaction from what I’m doing.”

Mayor one last question, do you have aspirations on becoming president of the United States?

“Not at all. I don’t want to be president. We have a great president. I just want to be Mayor.”

Roger Bobb is the current CEO of Bobbcat Films. In just a short time he has managed to work his way up from producing and directing what he would call low budget music videos and short films to becoming the Executive Vice-President of Tyler Perry Studios, and now having his own film company. He was born in London, and his family moved to the US when he was 4 years old. Bobb was raised in Brooklyn, New York and credits his interest in film making to his childhood. He and his brother would memorize and quote lines from their favorite movies. They loved movies and found it as a form of escapism. Bobb thought the film making business was just for white guys from Hollywood that were far, far away, until he saw and was inspired by Spike Lees’ movie, “She’s Gotta Have It”, that was filmed a few blocks from his neighborhood. Now, he knew what the future held for him. Bobb attended the Brooklyn College and the School of Visual Arts. Soon thereafter he became a Paralegal, where his company moved him to the heart of the film making city, Los Angeles California. His second view of filmmaking occurred in front of his Corporate Apartment Complex. He became totally fascinated and said to himself, “this is what I have got to do”. It was during this time that a lot of new up and coming directors, producers and film makers started to surface, like Robert Townsend of Hollywood Shuffle fame, Nick Gomez (Laws of Gravity), Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi) and a host of other independent film makers. Not knowing anything about film making did not stop Roger Bobb. He started out writing, directing, starring in and producing low budget short films. He won a few film festival contests and started making music videos, where he took on many roles. The big turning point in Bobb’s directing and producing career came when he entered a program given by the Directors Guild of America (DGA). This program is call the DGA Trainee program. It is a 2 year training program that teaches people how to make films. Bobb trained with veteran film makers, such as Woody Allen, Mike Nichols, and James Mangold. During this time he worked on movies like Cop Land, New York Undercover, and NYPD Blue. Bob credits this tremendous amount of experience as helping to jump start his career. In 2004 Bobb received a call from Tyler Perry who was looking for someone to help him produce “Diary of A Mad Black Woman” and the rest is history. Roger Bobb worked with Tyler Perry extensively to produce such hit films as, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea Goes to Jail, The Fam-

ily that Prays, Madea’s Family Reunion and a host of other hits. After eleven films, 222 episodes of House of Payne, 140 episodes of Meet the Browns, and seven years later, Bobb is ready to take that leap of faith and branch out on his own. He developed Bobbcat Films and the purpose of Bobbcat Films is to create various genres of film and entertainment. Bobb said that he will be doing reality shows, films and sitcoms. He would like to produce shows that will uplift, encourage and inspire people. Studios are now more receptive to financing Black Film, and Bobbcat Films will act as a conduit to other studios to produce film. Bobb stated that when House of Payne started, there was relatively only one Black sitcom, The Game, now there are 5 or 6 different sitcoms. There is a climate of inclusion now, states Bobb. He is very excited about his Film Company and filmmaking in general in today’s climate. He has a desire and vision to produce the type of programming he would like to see on film and television. If someone has a script and wants Bobb to look it over to produce, he recommends going through the correct process of submitting it to him through an agent. Although he does not directly hire actors and actresses, he states that he is always looking for new talent and can recommend talent to casting directors. He feels the Atlanta market is booming and has room for new talent. “Atlanta is considered the New Hollywood of the South. More sitcoms are being filmed in Atlanta right now; five sitcoms are being filmed here right now. The films and sitcoms being filmed here in Atlanta is by no means an accident with studios like Tyler Perry Studios,

Young people looking to get into the film business should work on their craft always, recommends Bobb. If you are a writer, you should write. It does not matter whether you get hired or not but you should always be honing your craft, and the Rain Forest Films, Bobbcat Films, and BET.

same goes for Actors. You should act if you act, whether you are acting in church or the church basement, or local stage production you should also be perfecting your craft. Bobb also recommends going to your local college and getting involved in film there, ‘I love what I do because I feel it has an importance in society to tell a story that motivate and inspires people.’ Bobb believes films are recession proof. “It is the cheapest form of entertainment. You can always turn on that box and escape”.

GRIND- How To Turn Your Coffee Break into Your Big Break

“If you shoot for the stars and miss, you can still hit the moon”.

In a world where it seems that everyone is looking to become the next American Idol, America’s Next Top Model, or the next Apprentice, there are very few how-to blueprints in the marketplace. While talent is a huge determining factor in a person’s success—there are many other elements that separate the stars from the wannabes. GRIND: HOW TO TURN YOUR COFFEE BREAK INTO YOUR BIG BREAK by CJ Miller delivers that blueprint, with honesty, humor and quite a bit of insight. This is CJ Miller’s journey of how he put himself on the track to reach the stars and along the way learned some life lessons that could help anyone in any field. The story begins with CJ’s frustration at yet another audition. Out of that frustration came a plan. If success wasn’t coming to him, he was going out to find it. He decided to start working at a well-known coffee house. Once inside the chain he secured a transfer to a Hollywood coffee house where he knew producers, directors, casting agents, and other power players came to get their morning joe. CJ knew that with his good looks, charm and personality, all he needed was face time to make his dreams come true; what better place than where these Hollywood star makers would be relaxed and use to seeing him everyday. Except, there’s more here than how to make it in the entertainment field; this is also a story of overcoming adversity, fighting through disappointment and failure and still pursuing your goals because as CJ points out even if you shoot for the stars and miss, you can still hit the moon.

Woman of Success

Written By Tony Martin CFO Women Of Wealth Magazine

W

hen will a woman be the richest person in the world? This was the headlines for a Wall St. Journal article on August 1, 2011. The article suggests that women may be doing better than men in the broader scheme, but they are under-represented at the upper echelon of wealth. The number of women on the Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans has dropped by half since 1996.

Now if her privately held company, Hancock Prospecting were publicly traded, her net worth would be $30 billion placing her in the top 10 globally. Based on a few projections and commodity prices, her net worth could top $100 billion. I am not providing advice to anyone but here is what I have been doing since I have learned this new information. I have researched a few of the private, publicly traded companies and alternative investments in this space. If it is good enough for Ms. Rinehart it is good enough for me.

According to a report from Citigroup, mining heiress Georgina “Gina” Rinehart is on course to overtake Carlos Slim as the richest person in the world if commodity prices keep rising. Ms. Rinehart’s three coal and iron ore projects are among the 10 most promising projects in the world.

Tip

Wealth leaves clues and patterns. There is always room at the top. The people that make the Forbes 400 list willingly share how they accumulate their fortunes annually. Follow the leader and become that leader that others desire to follow.

ernie Lawrence-Watkins is a seasoned transactional attorney in the areas of Entertainment, Intellectual Property, New Media and Corporate Law. Some of her clients have obtained some of the highest accolades in their career, including, but not limited to Grammy Awards and Tony Awards. She also received The Token of Appreciation Award from Music in the Metro, a non-profit organization located in Des Moines, Iowa for bringing youth and the music industry together. Throughout her career, she has served on the Board of several nonprofit organizations, including the Black Entertainment Sports Lawyers Association (BESLA), United Way-African American Partnership, Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Smyrna Basketball Association, Inc., and co-founder of Black Women in Entertainment Law (BWEL). She currently serves as a local advisory Board member to 1-Economy Corporation, and Branch, Banking and Trust (BB&T), the fourth largest bank in the Southeast region. She maintains a column called “Ask Bernie the Attorney” for an online publication over the years. She is a member of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys (GABWA), Women in Film and Television Atlanta, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Ms. Lawrence-Watkins is married with two sons, ages 9 and 12.

Bernie, have you experienced any challenges as a woman practicing law in the entertainment field? Yes. Entertainment Law is a male dominated field. Potential clients have the perception that women will not be as aggressive in a negotiation. We are perceived as being women in the traditional sense. So, from the onset of meeting with a new client, we (women) are faced with having to prove that we can be as assertive and know how to play hardball. What would you say has impacted you the most over the years?

92

| WOMENOFWEALTHMAGAZINE.COM

Having a family has impacted me most over the years because it has taught me how to maintain balance in my life. My work schedule can be quite hectic at times. My responsibilities as a mother and a wife allow me to cater to my family in a way that takes my mind far away from my work. My sons know their mother is a professional with time constraints, but they also see that I make myself available to address their every need. It is important for them to see a strong woman who, in their eyes, can do it all. It helps set the standard for what qualities they should look for in a woman.

How do you see women as change agents in your field? If more women pursued a career in entertainment law, it would help to level the playing field. We serve as role models to others who aspire to follow in our footsteps; I call it “women empowering women.” The more women we have in positions of power, the less likely women will face the fear of not being able to break the glass ceiling. What role does your company play in mentoring? Every year we invite high school, undergraduate and/or law students who are interested in the field of Entertainment Law to either intern or shadow us for a day at the office. We expose them to the different aspects of what is entailed in running an entertainment law practice and arm them with the necessary tools to compete. How do you mentor other women? I make myself available and talk to women about how to conduct themselves in a business environment. I also talk to them about my experiences and offer advice regarding any concerns they may be facing in their practice or the field of entertainment, in general. My goal is to help guide women so they can avoid some of the pitfalls in the business. WOMENOFWEALTHMAGAZINE.COM |

A Man at The Top Of His Game

B

By ShiVonne Taylor

ernard H. Coleman, Jr., Esq. was born in West Palm Beach, FL to a single, teenage mother who was denied the opportunity to participate in her high school graduation because she was pregnant with him. He reluctantly remembers the times when his mother did not eat to make sure that he and his brother had enough. He vividly remembers food stamps and the government-issued powdered milk and blocks of cheese that they often relied on during the hardest years of his young life. Despite the many obstacles he faced in his childhood, Bernard was inspired by his family’s love, faith and work ethic to rise above humble beginnings to become one of the most well-known and well-respected Sports & Entertainment Attorneys in the country. The seeds of success were planted early by Bernard’s grandmother, Bernice Lyles, who worked as a maid for wealthy families in Palm Beach, Florida. Bernard’s father inspired him to be the best at whatever he did and provided the foundation for the athletic ability that would open doors in his life. His mother is a woman of faith who he attributes with introducing him to God.

During Bernard’s freshman year, tragedy struck. He suffered a football career ending knee injury that caused him to miss over a month of classes. He had to endure two agonizing knee surgeries and a long, grueling rehabilitation process. He spent over 2 years rehabilitating his knee just to be able to walk normally again. He had every reason to give up and go home, but he persevered. While at Harvard, Bernard even found time to study abroad at the American University in Cairo, Egypt during his junior year. He remembers sailing down the Nile River and placing his feet into the Red Sea as a 20 year old American college student. Through all that he experienced while at Harvard, Bernard not only competed with his peers; he graduated from Harvard on time and with honors. Bernard went from Harvard to the University Of Virginia School Of Law. Upon graduating from law school in 1996, He began as an Associate at one of Atlanta’s most prestigious law firms. He later became a Partner at a mid-sized law firm in Atlanta before joining Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice LLP along with his mentor and the man he affectionately refers to as his “Professional Father,” John F. Sandy Smith, Esq.

In high school, Bernard was a star football player (like his father before him who was drafted to play in the NFL). He was also a captain of the football team as a fullback scoring 14 touchdowns during his senior year. Football proved to be a springboard out of poverty and on to bigger and better things. Bernard graduated from Boyd Anderson High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1989 as the Valedictorian of a graduating class of 400 students. He interviewed with every Ivy League college and chose Harvard (or should I say, Harvard chose him).

Now in the 15th year of his legal career, Bernard has closed over a billion dollars in transactions ranging from complex merger/acquisition transactions to endorsement deals and strategic partnerships for his athlete and entertainment industry clients. He heads the Sports and Entertainment Practice in Atlanta for Womble Carlyle, and he is a Partner in the firm’s Corporate and Securities Practice. Womble Carlyle is a full-service law firm approaching 600 lawyers and one of the top law firms in the United States. The firm’s offices span from Georgia to South Carolina, North Carolina, Delaware, Virginia, the District of Columbia, Maryland and out to California. However, what Bernard enjoys most about Womble Carlyle is the firm’s entrepreneurial and congenial culture. According to Bernard, Integrity, Devotion to Clients and Respect for the Individual are the core values of this firm. When he learned that the firm was governed by these core values, he knew he had found his professional home.

Upon being accepted to Harvard, Bernard faced the challenge of how he was going to get to school and meet all of his expenses. That’s when God sent an angel into his life—an attorney by the name of Martin D. Cohen out of Allentown, Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Cohen had a foundation that helped disadvantaged young people pay for college. Mr. Cohen’s wife had read about Bernard in the local newspaper and encouraged him to apply for a scholarship through their foundation. Between the financial aid package from Harvard, the Cohen’s generosity and his three college work-study jobs, Bernard was able to pay his tuition, book fees, and room and board for the four years he was at Harvard. When Bernard arrived at Harvard, he quickly saw that most of his fellow students had a much different path to Harvard than he. Many of the students had attended the country’s most elite prep schools. Many students had family and friends who attended Harvard and other Ivy League schools.

Bernard’s peers at Harvard were wellprepared and seemed groomed from childhood for the Harvard experience. He did not have the advantages afforded to most of his classmates, but this did not discourage him. Hard work was one of the values instilled in him by his grandmother. Failure was not an option.

Through his firm’s Sports and Entertainment Practice, he enjoys working with such sports legends as Evander Holyfield and Dominique Wilkins, Atlanta Falcon’s Pro-Bowl Wide Receiver Roddy White, rising music stars like child prodigy Tyvion Harris a/k/a Tveezy (who is touted as a superstar in the making), rising movie/ television stars Robert “Iron E” Singleton (The Blind Side and hit television series, Walking Dead) and Sharon Morris (The Blind Side, Due Date, Green Lantern and Secret Life of Bees). Bernard also counsels film producers on organizing, structuring and raising capital for their film projects, and his practice also helps television show producers get television shows placed with television networks. y vision for this law practice is to help clients make money, make history and make a difference. Bernard is passionate about his vision, and he shares it with every client prospect he meets. He has fast become one of the most sought-after Sports & Entertainment Attorneys in the country. Today, he is living his dream, and his greatest fulfillment comes from helping others live theirs. Bernard is a shining example of what the American Dream can be, and as far as he is concerned, he is just getting started. You can reach him at BColeman@wcsr.com or 404-962-7576.

erri J. Vaughn is an actress who for over a decade has captivated the hearts of her fans. She first captured America’s heart with her lovable portrayal of Lovita Alizay Jenkins on “The Steve Harvey Show.” She has also played the role of Brenda in the Tyler Perry film “Daddy’s Little Girls”, alongside Gabrielle Union and Idris Elba. These two movie appearances only scratch the surface of Terri’s accomplishments as a renowned Hollywood actress.

This “However” isn’t necessary, Terri’s rise to stardom took root in humble beginnings. Terri grew up as the daughter of a hardworking secretary and department store employee. While in her youth, Terri invested her time into studying, singing in her church choir, modeling, and working at McDonald’s. By remaining committed to these endeavors, Terri grew into a woman of discipline and self-confidence. She even funded her own tuition at California State University, during which she entered the Miss Black California Pageant contest. Terri’s experience with this pageant helped her to see her passion for acting, which has landed her in films including “Friday” (1995), “Don’t be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood” (1996), “Fair Game” (2005), “Daddy’s Little Girls” (2007) and “Three Can Play That Game” (2007). “The success of my career has been a long journey, but my big break came when I played Lovita Alizay Jenkins on the Steve Harvey Show. For five years, I was part of that show, and I’m very grateful for Steve Harvey. He’s incredible. He’s talented, smart and funny. He’s my godfather. And I’m also very thankful for Lovita Alizay Jenkins because she was the one who put me on the map!” When Terri is not dazzling her audience on the big screen, she remains a devoted wife and a mother. “She is married to Karon Riley, an NFL player, and they have two children.” Recently, Terri and her family relocated from Los Angeles to Atlanta.

Along with her role as an actress, businesswoman, wife and mother, Terri has shown her commitment to bettering the lives of young women.

“My mission is to provide a nurturing and supporting community for Atlanta-based talent where they can feel a sense of camaraderie that I so deeply fell in love with during my 17 years living in Hollywood, as well as a haven for out-of-town actors to unwind while filming in Atlanta.” Through The Green Room Lounge, Terri has graciously given back to her community by supporting two nonprofit organizations: Take Wings Foundation, whose mission is to build the self-esteem of at-risk teens, and the Colored My Mind, whose mission is to improve the lives of children and adults affected by autism. Terri is a remarkable woman who from humble beginnings has built an incredible acting career and legacy for young women. She has cultivated her passion into creating a lounge that serves as a hub for artistic and creative talent in the south. Therefore, it is of no surprise that Terri Vaughn continues to leave an impact in her community. Within a few years of arriving in Atlanta, Terri channeled her creative juices into creating the Green Room Lounge. Nestled in Buckhead, an upscale community, The Green Room is one of the finest lounges in Atlanta.” While in the lounge, people have the option of taking acting courses or networking while enjoying an elegant hors d’oeuv or a cup of coffee. Furthermore, the lounge is artfully decorated with books—many of which were used by Terri and her former students—on subjects including acting, theater and entertainment.

r. Lei Lewis, a non-denominational minister and International motivational speaker, is the Founder, Publisher and CEO of Women of Wealth Magazine, one of the leading publications on financial education, mentoring and philanthropy. She is also the Founder and Executive Producer of the Annual Global Women Financial and Philanthropy Summit featuring the Red Carpet Experience and Mentor/Mentee Partnership Luncheon. As a woman continuously evolving, she founded the 1000 Women Strong Mentoring (WSMI) Global Initiative in 2010. The motto of WSMI is “Changing The Face Of Wealth through financial education, mentoring and philanthropy”. In addition to the above, she is the Executive Producer of the Women of Wealth Magazine Reality Show. Dr. Lei, a coal miner’s daughter, was born in the hills of West Virginia. At the age of 13, her mother was killed by her father in a domestic violence encounter. She and her nine siblings moved to Florida to begin a new journey, without mother or father. In spite of her tragic beginnings and against all odds, she can proudly state that she is a first generation lawyer and a graduate of the University Of Georgia Law School. As an entrepreneur, she practiced business and nonprofit law for over 15 years.

She states: “it is still too painful to look back down that road”.

Dr. Lewis has ministered and taught in South Africa, London, Paris and Amsterdam. Today, she is positioned to change the face of a nation through her multicultural vision to change the face of wealth through mentoring, financial education, empowerment and philanthropy. She is the Author of two books. Her first book, Empowered by Christ to Live, graphically paint the story of how she hovered between life and death. Details of that part of the journey will be revealed in her quest to redesign her future. Although it happened over 10 years ago, she states “it is still too painful to look back down that road”. She has hosted several television shows and all about transforming lives. Dr. Lei has to have a passion to see women at the top. She often states “WOW Magazine will give women an opportunity to network and earn a seat at the table with powerful mentoring leaders.

WOW Women readers recognize that it is no longer sufficient to merely look at the table from afar but instead she is demanding a seat at the table.” Currently there are over 10.6 million women-owned businesses employing 19.1 million people and generating $2.5 trillion in sales. Women make or influence over 80% of all purchasing decisions. While women wield significant influence they still lack proportionate influence and power in the corporate world. The overall employment situation of women has not evolved significantly since 2001. WOW Magazine has chosen to participate in the movement to Change the Face of Wealth by launching the 1000 Women Strong Mentoring (WSMI) Global Initiative. By the end of 2012, the goal is to have enrolled 1000 women into our mentoring program with each woman paired with a mentor within her industry. Our Mentor Mentee Partnership Initiative will have several components to it.

Women who want to be a part of our mentoring Initiative should visit our website at www.wowglobalsummit.com and enroll in our mentoring community. Our focus is women of wealth and power mentoring women of various cultures who are on the cutting edge of success. WOW Magazine is about enabling women to become their own personal Architect in redesigning their future. Some of you will recall the Doris Day song, “Que Sera, Sera, whatever will be, will be, the future’s not ours, to see Que Sera, Sera, what will be, will be.” Well I do not believe that, I believe if you can see yourself in the future, we will see each other at the top. In the first phase of my life, I journeyed through life as a minister and a lawyer. Now, I am enjoying the journey as I evolve and explore all aspects of my journey as a publisher, film maker, mentor and philanthropist. On behalf of WOW Magazine, Dr. Lei has covered events all over the nation, from the White House, the Clinton Global Initiative, the BET events to Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women Leaders and so many more. I invite you to come along with me and share my journey as I go forth in my quest to redesign my future, with God as my Chief Architect. Visit me at www.womenofwealthmagazine. com and move forward with me as I set out to redesign my future. Please write me at lei.womenofwealthmz@ gmail.com and tell me about your quest to redesign your future, using the plans of the greatest Architect that ever lived, God, our father. I will reply back and display some of your stories in a future issue of WOW Magazine. Come on; write to me, you just might have your winning story featured in a future segment of WOW Reality TV Show.
