MAY 2022
We are so thrilled that for the first time in three years, we will be celebrating Collectors’ Night in-person! Finally, a chance to come together again. We’re looking forward to clinking glasses, delighting in the presence of the artworks in this catalog, and dancing the evening away. We also look forward to honoring the artists in our community. WPA worked with hundreds of them throughout the pandemic on research-driven inquiries and experimental projects. Artists know uncertainty, and through dynamic workshops, screenings, conversations, and performances, they showed us how to care for each other, where to find beauty, and what can be accomplished when one perseveres. We are grateful to all of them for shining a light.
LETTER FROM THE COLLECTORS’ NIGHT CO-CHARIS
DEAR FRIENDS OF WPA,
A pivotal moment at Collectors’ Night this year will be the opening of bidding for WPA’s 41st-annual benefit art auction, held on Artsy through June 17. The sale is overflowing with incredible artworks, many of which will be exhibited at Collectors’ Night for your exclusive viewing. Because artwork sales are split equally between the artists and WPA, when you commit to a piece, you are not only investing in a work that will bring you immeasurable joy, but also putting money directly in artists’ pockets and funding another year of exciting artist-organized projects at WPA. Whether you are a corporate sponsor, a member of the host committee, a ticket buyer, an art purchaser, or an artist, we appreciate you being part of WPA’s community. Thank you for your support.

FEATURE
Washington Project for the Arts (WPA) is a platform for collaborative and experimental artist-organized projects, dialogue, and advocacy. We also run Wherewithal Grants, a regranting program for independent artists and artist collaboratives.

ABOUT WPA
HOW WPA UNIQUELY SUPPORTS ARTISTS ARTIST-ORGANIZED PROJECTS In 1975, WPA was founded as a socio-economic alternative to the mainstream museums that dominate the nation’s capital. In 2018, we deepened our commitment to artists in our community by officially adopting a new program model that empowers them to organize the projects and events that they want to see. Artists now organize all of our programming as an extension of their research and practices. We created this program model because artists around the world are increasingly collaborating across boundaries and borders to build community and shape discourse. We facilitate these collaborations through artist-driven inquiry. Our model provides artists with the opportunity to expand their practices and experiment without absorbing financial burdens or capacity barriers. We provide resources to create critical connections and long-lasting, mutually beneficial relationships that build artistic communities and experimental projects around knowledge-sharing.

ABOUT WPA
Our spring Artist-Organizer-in-Residence, Adele Kenworthy sharing her practice with another artist during a studio visit. Photo by Alexandra Silverthorne.
Our commitment to paying artists is why, in 2016, we became the first arts organization between New York and Miami to be W.A.G.E. certified. Annually, nearly 50% of our expenses go directly to artists. RESIDENCIES WPA supports a residency program for artist-organizers, providing them studio & meeting space, honoraria, production funds, and research support. Artists use the opportunity to conduct collaborative research and experimentation in the public realm. This can include curatorial and editorial research, community organizing, or public programming. This is not WPA’s first residence program—in the 1980s we had a designated apartment and studio space designed by the artist David Ireland.
SPECIAL EVENTS Throughout the year, WPA hosts intimate, special events for our patrons and friends, both at our space and in people's homes. These events provide opportunities to meet contemporary artists, learn about their practices, and explore the artistpatron relationship. If you are interested learning more about these, please contact Peter Nesbett at pnesbett@wpadc.org.

WHEREWITHAL GRANTS WPA has supported 124 visual artists and arts collectives in the DC area with a total of $220,000 since launching Wherewithal Grants in 2019. Generously funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts as part of its Regional Regranting Program, the program supports a wide range of multidisciplinary practices, particularly those that emphasize collaboration, research, and experimentation.

AUCTION INFORMATION
HOW TO PURCHASE ARTWORKS WPA’s benefit auction offers a rare opportunity to purchase artwork for your home or office while directly supporting artists and WPA. The auction will be held on Artsy, the online sales platform, from June 3 to to June 17, 2022. REGISTER TO BID To place bids on Artsy, the first step is to create an account at artsy.net (click the "Sign Up" button). Then you must register for the auction, which you can do several days in advance of the sale opening, or at any point during the sale period. When the auction is open for registration, it will appear in the “Upcoming Auctions” section of this page: artsy.net/auctions. Note that your registration may take 24 hours to process before you can place any bids. When the auction is live and open for bidding, at 8:30 p.m. on June 3, it will appear in the “Current Auctions” section. USING YOUR IPHONE OR IPAD If you would like the convenience of browsing the sale on your iPhone or iPad, you can download the Artsy app from the Artsy website.

BROWSING THE SALE & MAKING INQUIRIES When you see a lot you wish to bid on, you can view more information by clicking the thumbnail. You can also connect with an Artsy specialist by clicking “Ask a Specialist” for any additional questions, or you can contact WPA directly, by calling Peter Nesbett at 202.631.5438 or Emily Fussner at 571.255.9374.

PLACING A BID You can bid in two ways, a) enter a bid that is higher than the existing bid, or b) place a maximum bid and allow the system to bid on your behalf (in pre-determined increments) up to your maximum bid amount. Please note that maximum bid amounts are only executed if there is a competing bidder up to that amount. WINNING BIDDER NOTIFICATION & PAYMENT The bidder with the highest bid when the sale ends at 8:30 p.m. on June 17 is the purchaser of the artwork. Note that the Artsy website will not take payment; WPA
AUCTION INFORMATION
staff will contact you via email on Saturday, June 18 to confirm the artwork(s) you have won and to process payment. SALES TAX WPA will charge sales tax on purchases made to all DC residents. Sales tax will also be charged to non-residents picking up artwork from WPA. The sales tax rate is 6%. Buyers requesting sales tax to be waived must provide documentation of tax exemption prior to processing. Regulation 402.3 of the District of Columbia Code provides that the gross receipts for the sale of items acquired by a semi-public or social organization for the purpose of resale at a planned function are subject to the 6% sales tax.
PURCHASING ARTWORK AFTER THE AUCTION CLOSES Unsold artwork may be available for purchase through WPA after the auction ends, until 5:00 pm Tuesday, June 21, 2022. Please call Peter Nesbett at 202.631.5438 for more information.

ARTWORK SHIPPING & DELIVERY When WPA staff contacts you for payment, they will ask you to confirm whether you will pick up your artwork at WPA’s office, would like to request local delivery, or would like to request shipping to a non-local address. If you are in the DC area, WPA asks that you please try to pick the artwork up, or we can help you arrange delivery (in DC or within 10 miles of the city) for a flat-fee of $100. If you are not local, WPA can ship your artwork for an additional fee. The shipping fee can be found on Artsy with each artwork entry (see “Additional Information” below the artwork image). Shipping is not calculated by the recipient’s address, but will fall into one of three flat-rate categories depending on the size, weight, and material of the artwork, and must be paid before the artwork can be released. Pickup, delivery, and shipping timelines will be communicated at the time of payment, depending on your location and schedule, and how the artwork will be transported. WPA will make every effort to unite you with your artwork within 21 days of receiving payment.
