LETTER FROM THE CO-CHAIRS

As the co-chairs of this year’s benefit art auction, we are pleased to introduce HIGH FREQUENCY: a Benefit Auction in support of Artists and WPA, to be held in partnership with Artsy from July 30 – August 13, 2020. This catalog, printed exclusively for WPA’s closest supporters and friends, is a preview of the artworks available for sale. This year marks an important milestone for WPA: our 45th anniversary. Ideally, we would be celebrating with you in person at Collectors’ Night, our annual benefit party, but this year the coronavirus made that impossible. By partnering with Artsy to move the auction online, we are able to honor our commitment to the participating artists while also caring for the health of our community. We hope you will see the auction as an opportunity to support the important work of WPA, while also lifting up the artists who continue to bring us inspiration, solace, and moments of joy during this challenging time. We’d like to thank the corporate partners and host committee members who stayed with us through the transition from an in-person to virtual event, especially those who recognized the need and increased their support. We will enjoy seeing your bids online in the coming weeks, and we look forward to a time when we can gather again to celebrate our creative community in person.

In response to this global health crisis, WPA has stepped up to help artists like never before. With your support, we will continue to take actions like these to sustain our creative community. ARTIST PROGRAMMING WPA is forging ahead with all of the programs we had in development at the time that the pandemic began. This has meant reconceiving them in new forms, using new online and virtual platforms, and even the U.S. Postal Service. VISUAL ARTIST IMPACT SURVEY WPA circulated the first national visual artist survey in response to the pandemic to better understand its impact, both financially and artistically. Hundreds of artists responded, entrusting us with their stories. We used this information to develop the criteria for Wherewithal Recovery Grants. WHEREWITHAL RECOVERY GRANTS With significant funding from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, as well as the generous support of a number of individual donors, WPA launched the Wherewithal Recovery Fund, granting aid to visual artists struggling to meet basic expenses. Through this fund, we have provided relief to nearly 100 artists living and working in the Greater Washington area. ARTIST ADVOCACY WPA continues to advocate on behalf of artists in our region, principally around issues of compensation. We do this in our conversations with funders, our institutional colleagues (other nonprofit arts spaces), and local businesses. HIGH FREQUENCY

CONNECTING ARTISTS AND PATRONS WPA organizes two annual art sales that match hundreds of artists with an equal number of seasoned collectors and first-time buyers. This year, HIGH FREQUENCY replaces Collectorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Night, our spring gala and auction.

HIGH FREQUENCY provides a rare opportunity to purchase quality artwork for your home or office, while directly benefiting dozens of extraordinary artists, as well as WPA, during this critical time. The timed auction will be live from July 30 to August 13, 2020 through the online sales platform Artsy. REGISTER TO BID To place bids on Artsy, the first step is to create an account at www.artsy.net. The HIGH FREQUENCY auction will have its own page where you can register to bid several days in advance of the sale opening, or at any point during the sale period. When HIGH FREQUENCY is open for registration, it will appear in the “Upcoming Auctions” section of this page: www.artsy.net/auctions. When the auction is live and open for bidding, it will appear in the “Current Auctions” section. A NOTE ON THE ARTWORKS Artwork dimensions are listed here unframed, height by width by depth (H x W x D). Further information about the artwork, including framed size, will be available on Artsy. Prices listed in this catalog are suggested retail, provided by the artist.

HOW TO PURCHASE ARTWORKS

PLACING A BID There are two ways to bid: you can either enter a bid that is one bid higher than the existing bid, or you can place a maximum bid and the system will bid on your behalf against other bidders up to your maximum bid amount. Please note that maximum bid amounts are only executed if there is a competing bidder up to that amount. PURCHASING The bidder with the higher bid at the time that the sale ends on August 13, 2020 is the purchaser of the artwork. Note that Artsy will not take payment; WPA staff will phone you on Friday, August 14th, or Monday, August 17th to confirm the artworks you won and to process payment. You can also arrange payment on your own initiative after the sale ends by calling us at 617.710.3829 and asking for Alexa Kaye. SALES TAX WPA will charge sales tax on purchases made to DC residents. The sales tax rate is 5.75%. Buyers requesting sales tax to be waived must provide documentation of tax exemption prior to processing. Regulation 402.3 of the District of Columbia Code provides that the gross receipts for the sale of items acquired by a semi-public or social organization for the purpose of resale at a planned function are subject to the 5.75% sales tax. PURCHASING ADDITIONAL ART AFTER THE AUCTION Unsold artwork may be available for purchase through the WPA office for one week after the HIGH FREQUENCY benefit auction ends. Please call Alexa Kaye, at 617.710.3829 for more information. ARTWORK SHIPPING & DELIVERY During the processing of your sale, WPA staff will inform you of the location of your art. If it is in the DC area, WPA staff will ask if you would like the artwork delivered, or if you would prefer to pick it up at the WPA offices. If the artwork is not in the DC area, WPA staff will work with you and the artist to arrange for shipping or delivery. If the work will be shipped or delivered, you will be invoiced for those costs, which must be paid before the artwork is released to you. Every effort will be made by WPA staff to unite you with your purchased artwork(s) within 21 days of the sale.

offered lot subject to all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon (a) assumes the risk and responsibility thereof (including without limitation damage to frames or glass covering prints), (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof, and (c) will pay the full purchase price therefore or such part as WPA may require. If WPA is unable to unite you with your purchases through no fault of its own within 30 days of the purchase, the artwork will be sent by WPA at the expense of the purchaser to a public warehouse at the expense of the purchaser and such additional charges will then be added to the purchase price of the object. If the foregoing conditions and other applicable conditions are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to WPA by law, including, without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the bid price, WPA at their option, may either (a) cancel the sale, or (b) resell the property on three days’ notice to the purchaser and for the account and risk of the purchaser, either publicly or privately, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for payment of any deficiency, all other charges due hereunder, and incidental damages. 4. Any checks should be payable to Washington Project for the Arts. 5. These Conditions of Sale, as well as the purchaser’s and WPA’s respective rights and obligations hereunder, shall be governed by and construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the District of Columbia. Producing HIGH FREQUENCY required a certain nimbleness and understanding on everyone’s part, as the COVID-19 pandemic took us by surprise and upended all our original planning. Washington Project for the Arts (WPA) would like to thank everyone who worked with us to adapt to the new temporary reality, and we extend our thoughts to all of those who were unable to continue in partnership. WPA supports artist-driven projects, advocacy, and dialogue so that artists can live, work, and flourish. We believe a thriving arts community is essential to the enduring health of our society, and we value collaboration, inclusion, and experimentation.

HISTORY

Since 1975, WPA has presented more than 500 exhibitions; 1,000 performances; 700 lectures, workshops, and symposia; 250 screenings; and 58 public art projects. Nearly every major visual artist in the District between 1975 and today has had some connection with WPA. Many have sat on WPAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Board of Directors, including William Christenberry, Gene Davis, Sherman Fleming, Sam Gilliam, Martha Jackson Jarvis, and Maida Withers. Walter Hopps, the legendary curator, was also a board member. WPA has also brought hundreds of extraordinary artists and curators from outside the area to DC over the years. They include Robert Ashley, Alice Aycock, Eric Bogosian,
