Hawaiian Lunar Calendar
In the traditional Hawaiian calendar, the 29.5-day cycles of mahina (moon) is divided into three 10-day periods known as anahulu. The first period is ho‘onui (growing bigger), beginning on the first crescent. The second anahulu is poepoe (round or full), and the last anahulu is emi (decreasing).
Community FADs The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council supports community development programs aimed at utilizing marine resources in a sustainable manner while facilitating and supporting cooperative research with fishermen. The Council recognizes that legally permitted and properly located and maintained fish aggregation devices (FADs) have potential community benefits. In 2006, the Council worked with Hana fishermen to establish the first legally established community FAD in Hawai‘i. The number of community FADs has grown to five in Hawai`i and one in Guam (see map on back cover). Council-supported community FADs are public and fishable by everyone, but please use best practices by not tying up to or wrapping lines around
the FAD. Further, the Council requests that fishermen utilizing a community FAD submit a voluntary catch log (see next page) to the Council so as to improve management understanding of the number and size of the fish caught and the fishing effort associated with the FAD.
Tide Variations To determine the time for the high and low tides for the following places, add (+) or subtract (-) the hours and minutes from the Honolulu time depicted.
