CUTTING PROCESS

WELDING & CUTTING PROCESSES MMA PROCESS • Most commonly called stick welding • Also known as MMA (manual metal arc), and SMAW (shielded metal arc welding) • MMA welders are ideal for General repairs and maintenance • Can weld in windy, outdoor conditions • Simple in operation & portable TIG WELDING PROCESS • TIG = tungsten inert gas welding • Provides high quality welds • Precise and accurate welding on thin material highly aesthetic weld beads • Capable of welding mild carbon steel, aluminum and other metals with just a single shielding gas, argon • For aluminuim welding an AC/DC TIG welder is required PLASMA PROCESS • Can cut any conductive metals • Neat precise cuts • Low heat affected zone which prevents warping • Works with compressed air

MIG WELDING PROCESS • MIG = metal inert gas welding - Argon (or MAG = metal active gas welding) CO2 • Easiest welding process to learn • Ideal for workshop or factory enviroments • Best suited for fabrication work • Welds up to 4 times faster than MMA welding • Not suitable for windy, outdoor conditions

FLUX CORED MIG WELDING PROCESS • FCAW = Flux Cored Arc Welding • Can be used without GAS or Gas assisted • Can weld in windy, outdoor conditions • Works as well as Stick on rusty or dirty material • Polarity needs to be reversed • Deeper penetration for welding thick sections • Increased metal deposition (easily two or three times that of Stick welding)

DUTY CYCLE EXPLAINED The duty cycle really details just how long the machine can operate within a TEN minute welding time without overheating or becoming damaged! If your welding machine says ‘duty cycle =60% @ xyz amps’ this means that out of a welding ‘on-time’ of only ten minutes, your welder can only safely weld continuously for 6 minutes in every ten minutes, & if you exceed this 6 minutes, you will risk overheating or damaging your welder! The ‘on-time’ is the actual welding time where a welding arc is being produced. The duty cycle is not relative to where your welder is only plugged in & switched on, but not being used.

Manual metal arc (MMA) welding, also known as stick welding, is a manual arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode coated in flux to lay the weld. An electric current, in the form of either alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) from a welding power supply, is used to form an electric arc between the electrode and the metals to be joined. As the weld is laid, the flux coating of the electrode disintegrates, giving off vapours that serve as a shielding gas and providing a layer of slag, both of which protect the weld area from atmospheric contamination. Because of the versatility of the process and the simplicity of its equipment and operation, manual metal arc welding is one of the world’s most popular welding processes.

Welding Electrodes

Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, is an arc welding process that uses a consumable tungsten electrode to produce the weld. The weld area is protected from atmospheric contamination by a shielding inert gas such as argon, and a filler rod is used. TIG is most commonly used to weld sections of stainless steel and non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, magnesium, and copper alloys. The process grants the operator greater control over the weld than competing processes such as (MMA) manual metal arc welding and (MIG) metal inert gas welding, allowing for stronger, higher quality welds. However, TIG is comparatively more complex and difficult to master, and furthermore, it is significantly slower than most other welding techniques.

Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding, also referred to as metal active gas (MAG) is an automatic or semi-automatic process in which a wire connected to a source of direct current acts as an electrode to join two pieces of metal as it is continuously passed through a welding gun. A flow of an inert (argon) gas or active gas (CO2) (depending on the type of steel), is also passed through the welding gun at the same time as the wire. This gas acts as a shield, keeping airborne contaminants away from the weld zone. The primary advantage of MIG welding is that it allows metal to be welded much more quickly than traditional “stick welding” techniques. This makes it ideal for fabrication work.

Plasma cutting is a process that is used to cut most types steels and alloys using a plasma machine & compressed air. The principle of plasma cutting is based on the ionisation of air which is forced through a small orifice (the cutting tip) and air electrode. An electric charge combined with the ionised air creates the cutting arc (plasma). Plasma is an effective means of cutting thin and thick materials alike. Hand-held torches can usually cut up to 50 mm thick steel plate, depending on the size of the machine.
