F o u n d e r ’s N o t e This first issue is a labor of love celebrating all that is great about destination weddings and romantic vacations. The places, spaces, and faces I had the privilege to know are collected in this first issue. Destination weddings continue growing in popularity and have been for the past decade. This resource guide is to showcase the best of what is available and to know it makes sense to incorporate that “local flavor” in your plan in part of buying locally. I have the unique opportunity not only to partner with engaged couples to design their best moments under the sun, but to be a consultant of travel and have met unique tourism partners that set the highest standards for customer service and benchmarks in their work towards sustainable tourism. They amaze me. In my eight-years in the business I have found destination weddings can be green weddings. Before I reached out to Guido Bauer, CEO at Green Globe Certification, an internationally recognized provider of training and education for sustainable travel and tourism, I, like many, thought that traveling long distances for destination weddings must leave a large carbon footprint. However, I’ve learned from Mr. Bauer that the frequency of use for these hospitality and tourism businesses grows when they are sustainable, therefore decreasing the overall environmental impact of these weddings. Further, most of those vendors on these islands go to great lengths and invest substantially in a ‘greener’ approach that philosophically matches their desire to provide sustainable tourism. I felt their story should be told. I think travel has a huge positive impact on the judgments we make. We should enjoy the planning; enjoy the process, and most of all we should enjoy the people who go through the journey with us. Modern Mexican Dress by Les Gazelles

S

ome traditional Mexican wedding dresses will have lots of colorful embroidery. The Aztecs, Mayans, and other indigenous women of ancient Mexico wore brightly colored skirts and blouses made of cotton or other natural textiles.

Here is some great advice: if your destination wedding is in Cancun,

Riviera Maya and you want your Mexican wedding gown to reflect the ancient cultures, you can wear bright jewelry, or even this gorgeous modern komono-style dress by Les Gazelles.

Decide what types of wine you prefer. Some wineries have a limited selection - they might specialize in reds or a certain varietal. For example, I prefer Rieslings. However, there are only a handful of wineries that produce Riesling in Napa. It made it easier to plan where to visit, knowing that these were "must-sees".

Visit the wineries’ websites ahead of time. All of the wineries will have a website that will list what they are currently sampling at the time of your visit. While you might be familiar with some of the wines from your local store, the winery might offer a completely different tasting menu. The wine menu is usually a bit more on the "special" or "reserve" side, which can only be found at the Winery itself. Also, you might want to quickly rule out a location because they may only offer one or two varieties that you may not like. Plan your itinerary. Go to Wine Country Getaways. This online site was easy to use and helpful in planning out how far each winery is from the others. If you don't know the area it can be hard to understand how much driving time is involved, or even how to best maximize your time overall. Napa is the common term, but there are actually several areas that have a large number of tasting rooms.

You can visit Napa, Sonoma or Healdsburg just to name a few. Each could take you a day in itself. Schedule tastings early. While visiting websites, you can find information on how to schedule tours and tastings. I highly recommend picking out one to three locations that offer a full tour. Schedule this early! Full tours fill up fast. You can then base your itinerary on the tours you've scheduled. Also note that most tours and tastings will charge a fee ranging from $5 to $100. Schedule your time appropriately. Wineries on average are open between 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Some may open earlier and a few might close later). I would recommend you only plan a maximum of three visits per day. Otherwise, you will feel rushed and really won't enjoy the experience. Each tasting is usually at your own pace which can last from thirtyminutes to an hour. If you don't like what you taste, don't hesitate to leave and move on. Don't forget food and water! In town, you can buy small groceries or even sandwiches, salads and beverages at the Dean & Deluca on the main strip. For a more cost effective approach, you can stock up at the Target located in the city of Napa. Buy a 12pack of water. You will drink it! Pace Yourself. If there are five to six wines on a tasting menu, you can end up having 5-6 ounces of wine quickly. Pace yourself and plan out with your travel companions who will be driving and who will be tasting. We planned a "red" day where I drove and my partner got to taste whatever he wanted. Another day was a "white" day where I tasted and he drove. We also learned that you can split your tastings; pay one fee and share the amount. But also pace yourself on time... have fun! Walk around! Enjoy the scenery as it's gorgeous. Some of our best photos came from walking around a vineyard right at sunrise.

Ask a local expert. Make an enquiry to your hotel concierge for tips. They can provide a list of ‘partner’ wineries that might give you complimentary tastings or free tours. They can also schedule those tastings/tours or a hot air balloon ride. In addition, instead of paying each winery to ship home those one or two bottles you just acquired from them, arrange a shipment with your hotel. The hotel we stayed at, Hotel Yountville, worked with a local shipping company to deliver all our wine home for us. We discovered a cost savings benefit. Because we had a good collection of bottles from each of the wineries, having the hotel facilitate our shipment we avoided paying six different times for shipping. In other words, a difference between spending $20.00, six different times (directly from the wineries) and spending just one time at $40 to $45 through the hotel to ship one box (or a case of 12 bottles). We arranged to ship home three cases - all mixed with the best of the best that we tasted. Hot air balloon rides – a definite MUST DO! Several companies offer these. We choose the services of Napa Valley Balloons, Inc. It was wonderful and the best choice! We ended up having to reschedule for the next day due to weather, but it was amazing the next day. The company did a nice job of taking care of everyone and making us feel safe. As a photographer – I took some amazingly great photos. If you have extra time to spare, spend a day in San Francisco. When you fly into San Francisco airport on the drive north to Napa, stop at the Golden Gate Bridge for that photo opportunity. On a final note – let me tell you about Wine Clubs. During our stay in Napa Valley, we quickly learned that every winery will push you into joining their Wine Club. They'll offer free or discounted tasting fees, an immediate discount on anything you buy that day (such as 15%-30% off the sale) and a three to four shipments per year with two to four bottles in each shipment. At face value, it’s a great deal. But by the end of the trip you'll be wondering how much money you committed to spending. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely some clubs that we are happy to be in, but there are some that we have already called to cancel just because of buyer's remorse. iminatravelillustrated.com | ‘IMINA Travel & Events // ‘IMINA Travel Illustrated |

A Sandals Resort experience truly encompasses all that the Caribbean has to offer. Among the distinctive experiences to be enjoyed are a hip beach club with a chic vibe, day and night; a seaside paradise with mountainous views packed with flora and fauna; and a plantation-style Great House, where cool drinks and warm hospitality are served by the pool or in an enchanting private villa. And the best part is not only the enjoyment of all these experiences, but knowing that staying at Sandals makes a positive difference in the lives of Caribbean people.

The Sandals Foundation Recognized For Their Work Improving the lives in the Caribbean

The Sandals Foundation represents the culmination of three decades of dedication to the Caribbean by Sandals and brings to life the hotel operator's belief that being good neighbors and citizens is a non-negotiable duty. The Sandals Foundation invests in sustainable projects in education, the environment, and communities and aims to preserve and protect the beauty of the Caribbean. It receives countless requests for help from across the islands and seeks to do everything it can to respond to as many as possible. The Sandals Foundation allows both the company and its staff to meet the needs of the people living on the islands. The Sandals Foundation has secured a prestigious World Travel Market Global Award in recognition of the work it undertakes as the philanthropic arm of Sandals Resorts International. WTM's Global Media Network, consisting of key travel industry media around the world, selected organizations and individuals that have contributed to their region's travel and tourism industry.

The Sandals Foundation was nominated by Travel Weekly USA, and was presented with the award on November 2011. Adam Stewart, President of the Sandals Foundation’s Board of Directors was elated by the news. “To be recognized by the World Travel Market, one of the most prominent travel organizations in the entire world, is incredibly humbling and a great testament to the work of, not just our Sandals team members, but also our travel partners who all play a huge role in making a difference to the lives of those who need it the most,” remarked Stewart. “By its very nature, the work of the Sandals Foundation is never complete but an award such as this drives us on to greater and greater heights and is a tremendous honor,” Stewart continued.

Inspiration boards help communicate your expectations very easily. Another approach would be taking the song you choose for your first dance or walk down the aisle – now ask yourself, “If you were to make a music video about your wedding day what would it look like?” Close your eyes – play it in your mind; imagine YOUR day. Now you have the look, the tempo, and the vibe you’re seeking. Journal it with photos and share it all with your resort’s onsite wedding coordinator.

“Before the meeting with your resort’s onsite wedding coordinator that occurs once the engaged couple arrives at the resort, it is suggested to have had all the wedding details guaranteed far in advance”

– Palace Resorts Weddings

Finally arriving at your resort is exciting, and those wedding formalities are just as exciting. So get to the pool, beach, and sunny weather more quickly by being well-prepared for your meeting by setting up services a few months in advance – that way you are only ‘re-confirming’ your arrangements which will shorten your meeting time.

“Lastly, trusting your resort onsite wedding coordinator is very important to the planning.” – Palace Resorts Weddings Engaged couples taking a "do-it-yourself" approach should take the time to do their own site inspection at their destination of choice. It is a good idea to visit at least three different resorts and to get to know the staff before making a commitment. Trust is a process. The initial meeting with a resort onsite wedding coordinator will help lay the foundation. If your budget is limited, seek out a professional, such as ‘IMINA Travel & Events, to eliminate the guess work.

If you think of yourself as a traveler and not as a tourist and if you want to connect to what’s considered real Caribbean hospitality – then welcome to Barbados! All across the island, you will find elements of the past intricately woven into the present. Sugar was the primary industry from the 1600’s until the 1980’s, and it remains a powerful influence today. In the parish of St. James, a town called Holetown is the oldest British settlement in Barbados, dating from 1625. It has many resorts, good shopping, and radiant beaches. It was

originally named Jamestown after its benefactor, King James I of England, but later acquired the name "Holetown" due to the off-loading and cleaning of ships in the very small channel near town. In St. Peter, the parish spans Barbados from the Atlantic on the east to the Caribbean on the west, and is home to many resorts with active waterfronts. Two of the most popular spots in St. Peter are the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, where the green monkeys thrive in a protected environment, and Farley Hill Park with its ruins of a grand plantation house. In the parish of Christ Church at the southernmost tip is Silver Sands, an extremely popular area for windsurfing.

So, if you are wondering how to

preserve the best moments -- we’ve got expert advice from one of Puerto Rico’s top wedding photographers, Vanessa Vargas.

Follow: Photographer Advice | Capturing Those Amazing Moments

We know how amazing, busy, sometimes crazy, and a bit overwhelming your wedding day can be. While you’re in the process of planning your day, a few strategies will help you through this process to ensure you will receive the best from your photography session. When planning to get ready in your hotel room, schedule the maid service early in the morning -- this way your room will look clean and organized and any photos taken there will look amazing. Your wedding coordinator may be able to help arrange this service with the hotel for you. If the hotel is unable to clean your room before the photographer arrives, then try to organize the room as much as possible; however, some wedding messes can be okay. Hide away any suitcases, bathing suits, or towels in the closet. And dispose of any beer bottles or leftover food too, if any. Bring along your wedding invitation. Arrange to have your flowers delivered to your room within plenty of time. Have your shoes, your rings and any special jewelry displayed and ready to be photographed as soon as your photographer arrives. Photographs during your hair and makeup session are usually one of the moments that take some time to shoot. So make sure your stylist is aware to arrive promptly for your appointment. You may want to give a reminder of the location where you are getting ready as well as the designated time. Also, try to schedule the end of your session within plenty of time for you to be ready at least 45 to 30 minutes either before your ceremony or at the moment of your “First Look” with your Groom.

When planning for a sunset ceremony, take into consideration the actual time the sun will set. The use of natural light helps sharpen the image. Schedule your photo session within enough time to avoid feeling rushed through because of the lack of day light. Also, consider having your “First Look” session before the ceremony. If friends and family members want to take pictures at the same time your family / formal portraits are taken, we don’t mind. However, keep in mind that it may get awkward and a bit confusing for the bride, groom and their family to know which camera to look at.
