Editorials Tecl1- Quo Vadis In a few weeks Tech will see the beginning of a new Mechanical Engineering BuiiCfing with the breaking of g round opposite t he Alden Memorial. This step will usher in the ftnal major building project. on the Institute's campus for many years to come.

Specifically, what does this mean ? If we look into the past or this venerable old college we might perhaps fmd the answer.

The founding of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, was, in itself, something of a dis tinction. It was d is tinct in that it was one of the few schools in the country to pioneer a new type or education on a sound and firm foundation . Though the plans were vague a nd indefinite the purpose and the s pirit and the sound backing were there in force . John B oynton and Ichabod Washburn knew what they wished to do, they wished to help the youth of that time to live a richer and more useful life. Has Tech kept this purpose in mind ?

After Boynton Hull a nd the Washburn Shops had been built , the then Worcester County Free Institute of Industrial Science entered a trans ition period which ultimately resulted in the evolution of what we now know as Worcester Polytechnic Institute. During this time, T ech saw new buildings going up a round the o lder ones, giving proof of the soundness of its engineering education. With each addition to the campus, the Inst itute appeared revitalized and accordingly, application ~ for admission increased as a lso d id enrollment.

Begun as a single stone building on West Street, the campus has grown with remarkable rapidity . Comparing aerial viE'ws of other colleges with our own indicate!> a definite reason for boasting. No engineering college enrolling an equal number of undergraduates can display a campus as large, as well-planned , and with such possibilities of even further expansion as our own .

But the mental health of the college has held no secondary position in the minds of our executive body. High admission requirements have been maintained. number of candidates even with satisfactory records has been kept small, and increased selectivity is being ma intained. Thus, facilities for the limited student body are exceptional and records of alumni show that training obta ined at W. P . I. was a boon to their endeavors.

And now we are fortunate enough to see the last stages in a development which has been proceeding steadily for seventy-five years. Soon the walls of another new building will be casting shadows on the campus-proof of the initiative and the genius of the men associated with Tech.

With the completion of the physical appearances here at the Institute, new horizons beckon W . P. I . educators. The goal lies in tha t direction which coincides with the desires of the public-spirited men who founded Tech. Whatever step is ta ken to fulfill these wishes, results in benefits to the community and to the nation as a whole.

These values, values of community and o f country, with the addition of capability are the test or the worthiness of W . P. I. Tech is worthy, Tech must satisfy even the ghost o f the critical and hard-headed John Boynton.

As Professor Taylor describes our college in his bi.s torical and informative book, Sevemy Y ears, " . . . the W orcester Polytechnic Institute, a n excellent engineering college that could not stay within the bounds of its founders' vision!' How true this isl
