Newspeak welcomes the Class o f 2001 to WPI by Ed Cameron and Lisa Bartee Co-Editors-in-Chief
Welcome to WPI! The staff of Newspeak would like to take this chance to welcome you to the school and invite you to sit down and catch your breath. The coming months are bound to go by with a flurry of new op portunities and before you know it, the year will be over. But before we get too far ahead of ourselves here, we’d like to let you know that we feel it’s our job to keep you informed of the week-to-week happenings at WPI. From campus-wide news to What’s Hap pening and the Police Log (starting in our first regular issue on September 3rd), we try to stay on top of what’s going on. News peak is published every Tuesday while class is in session (except for finals week - we’re all too busy!). Because the paper is entirely student produced, our staff has a big respon sibility. From the writers and photographers
to the layout and business staffs, everyone chips in and we all have a good time. Perhaps you would like to help us out. Although some members of the staff do spend a lot of time working on the paper, you don’t necessarily have to make a huge com mitment. Some positions take only a few hours a week. If you were interested in being on the writ ing staff, you would be covering the stories you want to see covered. We’re more than willing to help you with problems you have, whether you’re doing that first interview or just want to know who to contact for a par ticular story lead. Our writers normally cover events on campus (Coffeehouse Shows, for example), but we also have large numbers of books and CDs which come in to be reviewed. This is perhaps the most visible part of the paper, you get the by-line that you can send home to the folks. Newspeak values its writ ers, for they can give that student perspec-

tive that the administration doesn’t always have. But there is far more that goes on here to make sure that a quality paper goes out ev ery week. First, we need money in order to operate effectively. Essentially, we are a small business. Though a portion o f our funds come from your social fee, through the Stu dent Government Association, roughly 1/2 of our budget consists of revenue from ad vertising. It takes smart people to stay on top of all the paperwork, but this is WPI and you’ve already been accepted. Without our business staff, it would be impossible for Newspeak to operate. We also have a top-notch advertising staff, but there is always room for more interested people! The advertising staff contacts po
tential advertisers, sets up the ads which are to run each week, and even gets to design some ads. Ad design is a perfect place for someone who wants to exercise their creativ ity. This paper is intended for the WPI com m unity, especially the students. But it reaches much farther than the edges of cam pus. First, we are on-line on the World Wide Web (http://www.wpi.edu/~newspeak/) and this is read by people all over the world, hon est! Second, we distribute papers to our sub scribers, mostly alumni and parents who want to stay in touch with life on the WPI campus. And for those of you at the bottom of the hill, who don’t come up to Daniels Hall very often, we put papers in Founders Hall See Newspeak, continued to page 2
Welcome WPI students! by Edward A. Parrish President, WPI
Welcome back! I hope your summer was interesting, productive, and fun. If it was anything like mine, it went by so quickly it was hard to know exactly what did happen. In any event, here we are at the beginning of another A Term, so we may as well make the best of it. I thought I would take this space to share with you some of the things that happened on campus over the summer. To begin with, the new Web-based online registration system is ready for full use. The trial run last spring proved very suc cessful with those students involved in the experiment and we are optimistic that everyone will like the new system. No more long lines! If you have any suggestions whereby we may improve it, let us know via the newsgroup wpi.admin.feedback (more on this below). Those of you in Ellsworth/Fuller will benefit from a complete renovation that was just finished. This resulted in each apartment getting a facelift, with new cabinets and kitchen appliances, for example. As Sanford-Riley was refurbished last summer, this puts us at the half-way mark with the residence halls; Daniel and Morgan are scheduled over the next two summers. We are also making progress on the Campus Center. Over the summer, a committee composed of faculty, students, staff, and members of the Board of Trustee’s Physical Facilities Committee interviewed architectural firms interested in the project. From this effort, we recommended Shepley. Bullfinch, Richardson, and Abbott as principal archi tects. The Executive Committee of the Board approved this selection, and authorized negotiation of a contract to take our conceptual designs and functional needs to the stage of construction diagrams. At its meeting on October 17, 1997, the Board will set a date for groundbreaking, taking into account the need for fund raising. This year we are experimenting with providing a computer store on campus, oper ated though the bookstore. The idea is to offer those who are interested systems configured to fit into WPI’s computing environment and at competitive prices. Dur ing the experiment, only systems from Dell are being offered through the bookstore because this was the only vendor that could negotiate pricing in time for mailings to new students. If we continue this service, another vendor or two will be added to provide variety of choice yet realize some economy of scale. In the meantime, a local vendor (owned and operated by WPI alumni) with whom WPI has done business recently, TCS, Inc., is also offering specific configurations as part of the experiment. Both TCS and the bookstore will participate in the vendor’s day event during orien tation. Also on the computing front. Prof. David Finkel o f the Computer Science De partment has agreed to chair the new Information Infrastructure Planning Com mittee. Established over the summer, the committee is charged with developing a five-year master plan for academic and administrative computing as well as for the library, the Instructional Media Center, and telecommunications.
