The questions raised by the action o f Dartmouth's trustees in requiring fraternities and sororities to go co-ed are more fundamental. First, are these

houses truly this depraved? And second, if they are, will making them coed change anything or simply increase opportunities for depravity?

But now it seems there’s something even worse. It’s "being forced lo go coed.” I will apologize right now for using such a scary and downright rude word as “coed.”

At least, I assume it must be rude and scary, because nothing else would explain the knicker-twisting uproar into w hich the fra tern itie s and sororities o f Dartmouth College have plunged themselves. You would have thought, from the reaction, that some hallowed institution is being brought to an untimely end by a brutal and

And, perhaps this is so. Perhaps this w ill indeed spell the end o f the Greek system, at least at Dartmouth, and quite possibly, throughout the United States. However, I have to say I am somewhat skeptical about such a dire prognosis.

But, to be fair to the fraternities and sororities that are worried about their future, I have to say that I am also skeptical about the claims by certain adm inistrators about the various Greek houses. According to these administrators, fraternities are full o f vice, drunkenness and sexual debauchery.

Now, if you were to turn back the clock some 20 years and tell me, as a new student, that by joining a fraternity I would be immersing myself

behavior, I would have to say, in all honesty, that I might find it at least somewhat enticing!

This current “dens o f iniquity” approach to Greek culture is doomed to failure for precisely this reason.

It probably also explains why the membership o f such organizations is dropping nationwide. If they aren’ t dens of iniquity, why join them?

The theory is that they are useful social clubs that provide a basis o f networking and also do considerable amounts o f charity. As such, these organizations will appeal to some, but probably not to as wide a group as the “dens of in iq u ity ” type of organization.

All of this is, o f course, based on various theories (or, if you prefer a

K in n ic u t t H a ll, S a l i s b u r y L a b o r a t o r ie s Dr. Choucri will focus on how innovative technologies create forms of power that may “democratize” the global community in previously unforeseen ways. The transmission of new political, intellectual, strategic and scientific “voices” enables policy formation at the global level to reflect the diversity of the world’s community, and to create new bases for negotiations across conflicting views and contending cleavages. The net result is that a new paradigm of information technology is emerging-on that supersedes the traditional pattern. She will conclude her lecture by contrasting the old and new paradigms, and by highlighting some of the most significant implications for international policy and economic relations.

Nazli Choucri is a political science professor and associate director of MIT’s Technology and Development Program. An expert on interdisciplinary analysis of international political and economic conflicts and cooperation, she edits the MIT Press Series Global Environmental Accords, Strategies for Sustainability and directs the university’s Global System for Sustainable Development, an adaptive electronic knowledge networking system.
