In 1969 P rofessor H ev en th al h eaded a com m ittee to investig ate it. In 1971 C h a rle s M o o re w rote a proposal o n it. In 1982 E arl F la n sb u rg h stu d ie d the feasibility o f it. N ow , in 1989, P rofessor D e F a lco has m ade yet a n o th er stu d y o f it. W hat is IT ? IT is a cam p u s center. All four o f these c o m m itte e s cam e up w ith th e sam e result: W PI needs a cam p u s c enter, a cen ter w hich w ould p ro v id e postal service, a b o o k sto re and snackbar. T h e c am p u s c en ter sh o u ld also c o n ta in T V lounges, stu d y ro o m s fo r p ro ject w ork and any additio n al aspects w hich m ay be d e em ed necessary.

The faculty Planning Committee that dratted the WPI Plan recommends that a cam­ pus center be built to help foster the positive social climate and sense of community that the Plan demanded.

The Commission for Residential and Social Life reports: "Without the investment in a campus center, the Commission believes the central finding of its work - that WPI lacks a focal point for campus identity and community - will continue to be an unful­ filled need. The Commission regards the commitment to a campus center as its most important recommendation."

President Strauss announces a $100 million fundraising campaign that will include the Campus Center as a priority item.

WPI's Board of Trustees resolves to support the project through the selection of an architect and completion of a design ready for bidding by the end of the 1998 fiscal year.
