@WorthingtonOhio
Sports Line (weather info): (614) 786-7366
During inclement weather Worthington Parks and Recreation facilities will maintain normal operating hours for general recreation unless directed otherwise by the City Manager. We know you and your families need a place to play, so we maintain facility and program operations as long as instructors and staff are available. Program cancellation decisions are made independent of Worthington school closures. When possible, cancellations will be posted on Worthington’s Facebook page and on the WPRD sports line beginning at 8:30 AM for morning classes and 2:00 PM for afternoon and evening classes. Should weather conditions worsen after the indicated times, cancellation decisions will be made and communications handled in the best possible way according to the situation and staff resources. In the event of a weather related closure, programs and permit groups will be rescheduled, accounts credited or refunded. This Worthington Parks and Recreation brochure is printed on recycled paper.
Facility Information Worthington Residency Throughout this brochure, different fees are listed for Residents (R) and Non-Residents (NR). Resident fees apply to those who live or work in the city limits of Worthington, including spouses and school-aged children of those households. These households and companies pay taxes that support the Worthington Parks and Recreation Department and therefore pay the resident rate for memberships, programs, and rentals. All others pay the listed non-resident rate. Two proofs of residency are required at the time of registration to receive the resident rate. Examples of proof are a valid driver’s license, check with address, utility bill, or bank statement. Working Residents must work a minimum 20 hours per week for a company in the City limits of Worthington. Verification of payment of Worthington City taxes is required at the time of registration to receive the resident discount price. Acceptable verification is an original pay stub, dated within 30 days, that specifically denotes Worthington taxes being withheld.

Little Nemos
This class is also referred to as Parent Child Aquatics Level 1. A parent is required in the water with the child. The Tiny Tot swim class introduces basic skills to both the parents and the children. Parents will learn to work with their child including how to support and hold their child and prepare the child to try the skills on their own. Children are introduced to basic skills such as blowing bubbles, kicking their legs, floating on front and back, underwater exploration and much more.
This class is also referred to as Parent and Child Aquatics Level 2. A parent is required in the water with the child. This class is for those children ready to move up from the Tiny Tots (Parent & Child Aquatics Level 1) but are not yet old enough or ready for Flounder or Guppy I. Here the children improve on the skills learned in Tiny Tots. Children should be comfortable in the water and be able to move around by themselves with a parent or adult nearby.

Our Thank You for Learning to Swim It may be break week from swim lessons, but that does not mean that your swimmer should not be in the water! At the end of the Summer Swim Lesson Session we want you to swim during break and play with the aquatic staff in the pool. This would be a perfect time for you to splash around with your swimmer, get to know the staff and reinforce the skills that they have learned through the session. Upon completion of the each session you will be given a pass from your instructor good for one adult and the participant to swim and play on the day designated on the card. Additional guests may swim at regular guest pass rates.

Drama Camp: Pinocchio
Twelve Dancing Princesses and Prince
The puppet Pinocchio has one dream: he wants to be a real boy, but it seems he may never become it! He jumps from one piece of mischief into another. He is disrespectful to kindly Gepetto. He goes to the puppet show when he should be in school and even sells his spelling book. When he meets the bad boy Candlewick, Pinocchio easily consents to run off to the Land of Hooky! When he gets there, he becomes a donkey. With the help of the Blue Fairy, Pinocchio escapes and, at long last, realizes his dream. A faithful retelling of the Collodi story! Performance at 4:30 PM on Friday, June 27. Bring a 3 ring binder, sun block, swimsuit, towel and lunch daily.

Travel back in time to the Middle Ages and imagine yourself living in a castle with the fantasy of dragons in your kingdom. During this 5-day drawing workshop, students will learn how to illustrate period-specific characters and scenes, from knights in shining armor to elegantly-dressed maidens as they strengthen their drawing and coloring skills. There is a lot of focus on how to compose a well-drawn figure, but with a touch of the whimsy and intrigue of this time-period. We toss in a little architecture with a realistic drawing of a castle and add a dash of fantasy with some dragon images; learning how to draw both realistic and cartoon-style renderings. Get ready for five days of exciting, medieval imagery! Instructors: Young Rembrandts Staff #24887 Mon–Fri 12:30PM–3:30PM Aug 4–Aug 8 1 wk. R $125 | NR $150 Min. 5 | Max. 15

We’ve run this workshop before with ‘unbridled’ success—now we’ve updated the artwork for a first-place finish! Horses are not only graceful and majestic animals, but they are also excellent subjects to draw and color. In our Young Rembrandts Horse Drawing Workshop, our students will learn how to draw horses of all shapes, sizes, and styles. Colorful compositions help our students strengthen their coloring skills. PAD Awareness Walk for Clean Streets
All Ages • Selby Shelter Saturday, July 19 | 9:00–10:00 AM
Do your legs hurt when you walk? Do you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol? If you answered yes to both questions, you may have peripheral arterial disease or PAD. PAD occurs when cholesterol and fibrous material accumulate inside the vessels in your legs causing narrowing that obstructs blood flow, very similar to blockages in the heart arteries. PAD affects about 20% of adults over the age of 55, and over 200 million people worldwide carry the diagnosis. Risk factors for PAD include diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Having peripheral arterial disease increases your risk for heart attack and stroke. A simple screening test can determine if you have PAD, and a regular walking program is part of the treatment. Come join us for an educational walk and community beautification event July 19, 9:00AM at the Selby Park Shelter House to learn more about PAD (including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment), while helping to keep Worthington beautiful. Free, but pre-registration is encouraged. Those pre-registered will receive a goodie bag for participating. #25607 Sat 1 wk.

Give us your input! Please complete the WPRD Brochure Survey We would like your input on the WPRD Activity Brochure! Did this brochure you are looking at arrive in TheBAG at your home or did you pick it up at the Community Center? Or are you viewing a digital format? Are you able to find the information you are looking for easily, or do you have suggestions for improvement? Please take our short survey to help us evaluate the delivery and content of the Activity Brochure so we can be sure we are delivering our information to you in the most effective way possible!
Each year we close the Community Center for a week and the pool for two weeks to complete major renovation projects and deep cleaning. This is done in an effort to provide the cleanest and most up to date facilities while incurring as little inconvenience as possible. Having the scheduled maintenance period allows us to strategically plan our improvements and upkeep. This year’s shutdown period includes the following: • Drain both pools and detail clean • Service any pool mechanicals and inspect filters, grates, tile, etc. • Re-grout tile where necessary • Clean carpet • Refinish terrazzo and wood floors • Detail clean locker rooms • Clean air ducts • High dusting • Service fitness equipment This year’s shutdown also allows us to schedule any known operational interruptions caused by our roof replacement during the period we are already closed in hopes of eliminating the need to close portions of the building further inconveniencing our members.
The survey is available at this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ WPRD_ActivityBrochure We encourage you to complete the survey online, but paper copies are also available at the Community Center and Griswold Center customer service desks.

Foam Rolling Clinic
Age: 16Y and up • Community Room
Myofascial release in foam roll classes is based on the fact that loosening up the connective tissues increases muscle flexibility, in addition to reducing pain. The cylinder-shaped foam rollers are made of varying densities, which can be used to vary the pressure applied. In this foam rolling class, you will learn a variety of different ways to use the foam roller. You will practice rolling it over your muscles slowly, stopping and holding on sore trigger points until the tension is released, usually in about 30 to 60 seconds. Applying sustained pressure with a foam roller can release tension in the muscles and tissues, and minimize constriction. Instructor: Brandi Williams #25155 Sat 9:00AM–10:15AM 1 wk. We will then do some stretching to get ready for the cardio segment. The use of buoyant equipment adds variety and increases the intensity of our workout and the level of laughter. We may travel to other areas of the pool to further enhance our workout. We end our session with abdominal work and more stretching. Get a great water workout with us in the river. It’s fun. Fitness Programs The Alexander Technique
Circuit Training Strength Class
Fearless Falling
Do you wish you could stand and walk for a longer period of time? Are you having chronic headaches, back or neck pain? The Alexander Technique can help you! Come find out what you can do to move with more freedom, ease, balance and less pain and limitations. Start moving in a way that is more functional and satisfying for your body. Instructor: Donna Doellinger
Circuit training is an excellent way to simultaneously improve mobility, strength and stamina in a short period of time. Under the direction of an instructor, choose stations that alternate between different strength exercises. The exercises are separated by brief, timed rest intervals, and each circuit is separated by a longer rest period. Don’t miss the first session, as we will go over each exercise in detail, learning proper posture and technique as well as equipment adjustments. Great for any fitness level! Instructor: Jeff Fickell
NEW LOCATION at the Griswold! The fear of falling is one of our strongest phobias, and injuries from accidental falls have become epidemic, but little has been done to help people actually learn how to fall. There are basic movements you can learn at any age that will greatly reduce your chance of serious injury from a fall. Learning how to fall safely is the primary purpose of the Fearless Falling classes. Based on TaiChi kung fu, you will also learn how to move smoothly, avoid falls, improve your balance and awareness, and pick up some basic self-defense skills. Fearless Falling is open to all adults, but you should be physically able to get up from floor level by yourself. Black-belt instructor Mike Grigsby has been teaching kung fu and falling skills for over twenty-five years.

Fearless Falling: Personal Safety Skills
Jul 7–Aug 25
New!
This session will focus more on self-defense. Even a little selfdefense knowledge can be of great value when needed. These self-defense classes focus on simple, but effective, methods. They’re about protecting yourself from the most common assaults; not fancy movie techniques. They are based on the styles of Shuai Chiao Kung fu, Tai Chi Chuan, and recent self-defense research. The methods are quite powerful, but also humane. The object is control of the situation and selfprotection: not “kill-or-be-killed” techniques. You will improve balance, strength, stability, reflexes, general awareness, and learn specific “tricks” of the martial arts. #25003 Mon 4:00PM–5:00PM R $40 | NR $52

Griswold Center Programs Fitness Programs Feldenkrais Method®: Awareness Through Movement® Age 18Y & up • Topping Room
Feldenkrais lessons may be done standing, sitting or lying down. They explore basic movements in great detail, in a gentle manner that evokes in adults the quick, spontaneous learning of young children. This “reprograms” the brain for better posture and self-image, greater ease and pleasure in movement, and fuller relaxation in rest. Chronic tension, pain, anxiety, disability, and effects of aging are not confronted directly, but are simply left behind in a natural process of learning and improvement. Students are often surprised to find that the smallest and most gentle work produces the most profound changes. This method was developed by the late Israeli physicist Moshe Feldenkrais. Teachers and teacher trainings are certified by the Feldenkrais Guild. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing. Instructor: Melinda Murphy #24994 Tue 11:15AM–NOON R $24 | NR $31

PAD Awareness Walk for Clean Streets All Ages • Selby Shelter
Registration opens May 27 for Worthington Residents (see page 4 for details).

For anyone who loves literature and good writing. Come and join our play reading group. There will be something for everyone—comedy, drama, romance and mystery! We will read scripts from many different styles, then discuss the themes and characters. Leader: Mary Williams
Some fashions are so classic they never go out of style. Tie dying is a long-practiced pastime of hippies, counter-culture members, and people who simply love colorful clothing. Now you want to do it yourself, but the question is, how? What do you tie? What do you dye? Have all your questions answered with taking this class. Wear some old clothes. We will be tying a shirt and dying it in the class. The shirt will go home with you for the last part, washing and drying. One shirt included in class price. Please give your t-shirt size at registration. You may bring another shirt or item of your own.

Let’s talk about UFOs. (That’s quiltspeak for UnFinished Objects, a quilt or craft project you started but never finished.) UFOs are unfinished for a reason. People usually need some kind of help or motivation to get going again. One thing that surprises me in these classes is how much everyone learns from other people’s UFOs. You don’t just get going on your own project, you also see, hear and experience how problems are solved on other pieces. Have some craft or sewing project that you are stuck on? Griswold Center Programs Partnerships SALT—Seniors and Law Enforcement Together
Safeguarding the rights and well-being of seniors is a key responsibility of Ohio’s criminal justice community. By working together, law enforcement and organizations that serve older adults can accomplish much more than they ever could achieve alone. Supported by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is now a Triad, or partnership involving law enforcement, seniors and community groups that work to prevent crimes targeting the elderly. Worthington’s SALT (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) council work with Triad to present education and prevention programs and implement strategies to reduce or prevent crime. The Worthington area SALT council meets quarterly at the Griswold Center and is a great networking opportunity for seniors to share neighborhood information as well as hear from local law enforcement on recent trends. For more information call (614) 842-6320.
