Students will have the opportunity to experience college life, learn new skills, and obtain the information necessary for awareness and readiness for college and careers. Art & Communications Acting for TV, Theater, and Modeling Do you enjoy acting or simply wondered what acting is like? Do you ever wonder what it’s like to do a TV commercial, theater, or even model for a crowd? In this one week workshop, students will learn all that and more, from the basics of shooting a TV commercial to acting and modeling. Students will discover their unique talents, as well as develop self-confidence and good communication skills to enter the entertainment business (world) or any future career. At the conclusion of the week, students will create a live mini-performance to showcase their talent and skills learned! The program will end at noon on Friday. Digital Photography This workshop will introduce participants to the essentials of the medium. Participants will be required to provide their own digital camera, which has at least 5.0 mega pixel rating. Students will expand both their technical and artistic skills, allowing them to employ the creative method to develop a more visually stimulating body of work. Drawing Anatomy In this class you will create compelling portfolio drawings of anatomically precise details such as arms, hands, and heads. Bone and muscle structure will be explored through the use of anatomical software presentations and guided drawings as well as direct observation. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the function of bones and muscles in human motion. The program will end at noon on Friday. NEW! Business Law for Future Entrepreneurs Radio Disc Jockey (DJ) and Broadcasting This course will immerse students in the fundamentals of being a radio DJ and broadcaster. From planning a radio show, to producing programming content and selecting music, this course will train students how to record, edit, and broadcast their creative radio ideas. The class will train in the award-winning WPSC 88.7 FM radio station, named as the Best College Radio Station in the Nation at the 2017 IBS Awards. Making A Difference: Leadership through Community Service Who are the leaders of tomorrow? What are you doing to make a difference today? How are you lending a helping hand? This workshop empowers students to be positive role models and to strive to realize their potential without minimizing the value of teamwork. Students will participate in a variety of different leadership exercises and also partake in community service activities in and around the William Paterson campus. Students will learn more about themselves, others, and the world around them through fun and interactive activities, while building techniques to develop trust and collaboration. In this 24/7 connected world, this program will help students understand different types of leadership styles, how to work with others, and how important their contributions are to the community and beyond. The course will be designed to teach students to think like a lawyer. In other words, to be able to think logically, and to apply the law to the facts presented, in order to make a winning argument concerning the issue at hand. Students will learn how to think critically so as to include all possible outcomes, analyze the facts, read and understand the law, and summarize all of these factors in preparation for assigned homework projects. WP Shark Tank Marketing Strategies This workshop has been designed to target a high school audience eager to learn about the fundamentals of effective business strategy, dynamics of marketing, including the complexities faced by a company as it markets its goods, services, and ideas. (Instruction, Demonstration, Experience, and Assessment) process that has been adopted will enable students to maximize their development by utilizing proven sales techniques to have an immediate impact to influence others. NEW! Electronic Music Production Learn the tools to develop, record, and produce a song from a top studio owner and session musician. Computer Programming: JAVA This course will focus on the development of fundamental concepts of algorithm design and programming in Java. Mixed Media Sculptures Using recycled materials and a lot of imagination, students will plan, design and create a variety of sculpture projects. We will begin with basic paper and cardboard structures to understand concepts of form and space. Projects may include bottle cap art, plaster masks, and sculpting with repurposed objects. 4H Junior Chef Challenge (Grades 7 and up) Inspired by the popular cooking show Chopped participants are challenged to make 3 separate meals using mystery ingredients and a stocked pantry. This program teaches kids how to think about different flavors and how they work together. It challenges their creativity and nourishes a passion for the culinary arts. Learn about the art and practice of recording from industry professionals. Participants will have handson experience in a professional recording studio and take part in recording and mixing sessions. Introduction to Game Design The workshop is designed to provide the beginning skills to developing games. Science Engineering Olympiads This program does much more than test factual knowledge; participants are also engaged in problem solving, laboratory investigations and hands-on activities such as designing and testing mouse trap vehicles, bridges, and egg-carrying rockets. Preparing to compete in the various events also provides a vehicle for students to form new friendships and bond as a cohesive team. The Science Olympiad models the friendly competitive spirit that drives scientific research. English as a Second Language Communication Skills Program William Paterson University is collaborating with Interstudio Viaggi (ISV) to offer an English as a Second Language Communication Skills (ESL) program. This course describes the structure and dynamics of human society, and interprets social behavior within the context of modern society and culture. It includes an examination of such topics as the culture; social structure and systems; socialization; conformity and deviance; social stratification and social class; inequalities stemming from gender, race and ethnicity, religion, and age; the major social institutions of the family, education, the economy, the political system, the crime and justice system; and belief systems; human ecology; rural, urban and suburban life; popular culture; and social movements and social change. Making A Difference: Leadership through Community Service Who are the leaders of tomorrow? What are you doing to make a difference today? How are you lending a helping hand? This workshop empowers students to be positive role models and to strive to realize their potential without minimizing the value of teamwork. Students will participate in a variety different leadership exercises and also partake in community service activities in and around the William Paterson campus. Students will learn more about themselves, others, and the world around them through fun and interactive activities, while building techniques to develop trust and collaboration. In this 24/7 connected world, this program will help students understand different types of leadership styles, how to work with others, and how important their contributions are to the community and beyond. Drawing The purpose of Drawing is to provide each student with specific drawing media experiences and to build basic perceptual skills in terms of drawing from studio set-ups. Genetic Engineering and CSI In recent years, science and ethics have become major considerations for the general populace. They are both necessary, but must work together. Students will learn both hands-on laboratory techniques related to DNA fingerprinting and genetic engineering as well as discuss some of the most challenging and controversial topics facing our world today, such as stem cell research, animal rights, and research on humans. Digital Media Digital Media is an introduction to the fundamental principles of computer technology in art and design. Students will gain practical understanding of hardware, software, internet technologies and computer file organization. Topics such as saving, printing, scanning, computer systems and preferences as well as an introductory look at the Adobe software suite will be introduced. Additionally, students will gain an understanding of file formats in order to archive work on external drives and internet portfolio sites. By using the product Little Bits, students will be exposed to a series of components that serve multiple engineering functions. This can include relays, switches, delays, power sources, and other sorted pieces. As the students learn each component they are encouraged to experiment and build on their own. Projects are summarized as shown below: Designing a Roller Coaster (1) is physics project will show how the circular motion equations are related to the roller coaster and the relationships between the potential energy and kinetic energy; Designing a Bridge from balsa wood (2) physics activity will challenge students to build strong bridges using the laws of physics like the stress and the strain; Egg Drop Experiment (3) is related to topics like inertia, gravity, momentum, potential and kinetic energy; and Water Balloon Experiment (4) is related to a projectile motion of an object challenge is which group is going to get a maximum range of a projectile. NASA Moon Landing: Preparing for 2020 (Grades 5-8) Students would be working on six different design challenges, inspired by NASA’s upcoming mission to set up an outpost station on the Moon in the year 2020. Challenges require students to work collaboratively to brainstorm, design and build “equipment” that would help the astronauts land safely on the moon and be able to transport materials around the satellite while building the outpost station. William Paterson University’s Pre-College Youth Program offers Academic Academies for high school students to foster a deeper knowledge of college-level material in specific areas of academic focus. Students will examine career possibilities and achieve a new perspective on their academic abilities and potential. Faculty and college students will interact with students to explore the university’s resources, broaden their educational experience, and sharpen their academic skills.
