Foundation Annual Report July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017

A Message from the University President K athleen Waldron The William Paterson University Foundation is making a significant difference in the lives of our students and faculty, raising over $3 million from alumni and other donors during this past year to support academic programs and student scholarships. This Annual Report will provide an overview of the generosity of our supporters and how the funds are utilized to enhance the mission of William Paterson University. The Annual Report also will provide the University community with an opportunity to recognize individual donors and to highlight some of the activities that the University would not have been able to provide without this additional support. As a public university serving primarily students from New Jersey, we are acutely aware that tuition and reduced appropriations from the State of New Jersey cannot support all the needs of a thriving student body of more than 10,000 students and the scholarly pursuits of 400 full-time faculty offering over 250 academic degree and certificate programs. Without additional resources so generously provided by our alumni and friends, the University would be less dynamic and more limited in its offerings. The University has continued to focus on support for students through private donor scholarships. In collaboration with the William Paterson University Alumni Association, the Foundation provided 550 individual scholarships this year, totaling nearly $1.3 million. In addition, funds supported student programs, including mentoring, leadership programs, and participation in collegiate academic competitions. The Foundation support allowed students to travel to academic conferences to present their own research and to compete against national peers in collegiate competitions. Again this year, the student radio broadcasting and television studio production teams won national leadership awards that bring recognition and distinction to the campus. Faculty received additional funding to enable

them to conduct original research, scholarship, and creative activity, thus enhancing the richness of the classroom experience and supporting the faculty’s diverse research interests. Our alumni tell us that William Paterson University made a life-changing impact on them, and those reminders constantly reinforce the importance of an excellent academic experience. The University not only provides that academic experience, but also the personal and social development that leads to fulfilling careers and actively engaged citizens. As leaders in their communities, our students build on the strength of a William Paterson University degree to pay it forward to future generations of University students. Together, the Foundation and the Alumni Association have raised alumni participation to new heights. We will continue to reach out to our graduates to keep them informed of the University’s progress and to encourage them to give back to their alma mater. Foundation Board members continue to provide stellar leadership in the stewardship of the University’s endowment and fundraising initiatives, and I am delighted with the partnership that we have developed. The team from Institutional Advancement, under the leadership of Vice President Pamela Ferguson, and in collaboration with many other parts of the campus, continues to move the University forward to new levels of philanthropy. Your financial investment in our students, our faculty, and our University is laudable. I thank you for your commitment again this year. Kathleen Waldron President William Paterson University

A Message from the Foundation Chair and President William Paterson University’s students come from diverse backgrounds, financial circumstances, and geographic locations, but they all come to school with a dream. Whether to pursue a career that they’ve been interested in since a young age, to be the first in their family to graduate with a college degree, or to immerse themselves in the on-campus experience and participate in a variety of extracurricular activities to augment their classroom learning, our students are all working hard to develop academically and personally, and ultimately find their place in the world. As you will read in this report, we are continually working to find innovative ways to increase the amount of financial assistance that we can provide to students. A large, and expanding source of funding comes in the form of donor scholarships. The William Paterson University Foundation has increased its fundraising goals for donor scholarships, raising significant funds in the last several years and securing several new significant scholarships in this past year alone. While donor scholarships provide much-needed financial assistance to students, these scholarships mean so much more to the recipients. They demonstrate to students that somebody whom they have never met believes in them and is willing to invest in them and their education. Many

scholarship recipients share with us that this support helps to boost their self-confidence, inspires them to work even harder to maintain good grades, and feel more secure in their decision to pursue their education. We are continually humbled by our students’ determination and hard work in pursuit of their dreams. However, for far too many, financial need is an obstacle to opportunity. For those students, a donor scholarship lessens the tuition burden and allows them to focus on their studies and career preparation. For all that you do to support our many deserving students, we thank you.

About the Foundation The William Paterson University Foundation, founded in 1992, is a nonprofit entity created to support the educational mission of William Paterson University and is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of students, enriching resources available to faculty and staff to support pedagogy, research, and creative work, and developing alumni relations in partnership with the University’s Alumni Association. The Foundation is governed by an independent board of directors of 25 private citizens who meet four times a year. In accordance with its by-laws, the Foundation is managed by staff from the Office of Institutional Advancement of the University and is presided over by Vice President Pamela Ferguson, who also serves as president of the Foundation. Foundation financial statements are audited annually by PKF O’Connor Davies LLP and the investment assets are managed by Goldman Sachs.

Fiscal Year 2017 Overview Fundraising Highlights The Foundation raised over $3 million in cash, gifts-in-kind, bequest intentions, and new pledges, representing a solid fundraising year. During fiscal year 2017, the Foundation benefited from the generosity of 3,654 donors, including alumni, friends, faculty and staff, parents, foundations, and corporations. The annual giving program raised over $562,000 representing the highest yield in the history of the University. Much of this success was due to those donors who increased their giving to the minimum leadership level of $1,000 or more, a 25% increase in just the last year alone.

William Paterson University of NJ Foundation, Inc. Total Assets, Endowments and Endowed Scholarships FY10 - FY17

Scholarships. Scholarships. Scholarships The Impact of Generosity At William Paterson University, more than 80% of our students require some form of financial assistance while completing their degree. The overwhelming majority also work part- or full-time while attending school. Still, despite this and competitive tuition rates with minimal annual increases, the average William Paterson student will graduate with $25,000 in debt and spend the next 20 years repaying government and private loans. Scholarships are about opening doors and creating possibilities for our students. Scholarships enable our students to be a top student in the Honors College and an active member in college organizations. Scholarships free the time a student needs to host and produce campus television and radio shows, write for the two University newspapers, and complete an internship at a local or national network, all while completing the credit load needed to graduate in four years. Scholarships give a student the chance to prepare for and attend an exclusive invitation-only industry conference or allows a student to work fewer hours so he or she can become a student government leader.

Scholarships turn the dream of a well-rounded college education and all the future benefits it brings into a reality for thousands of our students. That is why your support is so important. Thank you to the many individuals, foundations, and corporations who have provided important and necessary assistance to help our students with financial need become innovative thinkers, practical learners, and leaders in the community and beyond. Precipitated by a generous pledge of $1 million from The Henry and Marilyn Taub Foundation, William Paterson University focused even more intently on increasing scholarship support with a goal of raising $10 million. As of June 30, 2017, we have raised nearly $5.7 million. Since 2010, the University has increased annual donor funded scholarships over 214% going from $414,000 to an estimated $1.3 million, resulting in more than 550 scholarship awards. The scholarship endowment has increased 156% from $3.2 million to more than $8.2 million during the same period of time. In the past year alone, the University raised more than $2.2 million in endowed and annual scholarship support.

Through the generosity of donors, several new endowed and annual scholarships were established in fiscal year 2017. Highlights include:

also doubled their scholarship support bringing their commitment to $50,000 to support students in the music management program.

“Scholarships do so much more than help students financially. They let our students know that we care and are thinking about them. We can’t overlook the comfort that this must play in the lives of our scholarship recipients. … I am forever grateful to William Paterson, and, like all other scholarship donors, motivated to do something for the current generation of students.” Jeff Millar

Academic and Progr am Support Ip Wing Kong, a well-known figure in business among the Chinese American community, provided a generous donation of $150,000 to the Center for Chinese Art at William Paterson University. Kong is the founder of Kong Kee Food Corporation, a specialty food products company, as well as an artist who focuses his work on Chinese calligraphy.

The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation generously provided $100,000 in support of the College of Education’s STEAM – Framework for Teaching Across Disciplines Program and they have done so since 2012. The William Paterson University Foundation also received generous support from corporations with both local and international footprints for the Cotsakos College of Business’s successful National Sales Challenge at the Russ Berrie Institute for Professional Sales. In response to the reality that professional sales is still a practitioner’s discipline, the Russ Berrie Institute for Professional Sales created a “boot camp” for the National Sales Challenge though the generous funding from the Russ Berrie Foundation. In consultation with industry experts the goal of the RBI Sales Career Boot Camp is to give sales students an opportunity to hone their execution skills and to get a taste of the real world through their close interactions with practitioners in the field.

In addition to the generous $1 million four-year pledge to establish The Henry Taub Scholars Program, The Henry and Marilyn Taub Foundation also generously supported William Paterson University’s newly launched early childhood learning consortium for preschools in Bergen and Passaic counties with a gift of $95,000. The goal of the program is to systematically explore, implement, and evaluate the use of best practices in preschool settings. Following William Paterson’s highly successful Professor in Residence (PIR) model, the program provided direct support to preschool educators through embedded PIRs for classroom coaching; built a preschool network that educators can use as a resource to exchange ideas and experiences; and provided timely and sustained professional development support to preschool teachers. The Henry and Marilyn Taub Foundation also invested in William Paterson University’s Turnaround for New Jersey (TAP) program at Paterson’s PS 28. The focus of the program is to provide embedded professional development opportunities facilitated by a Professor in Residence for the teachers and staff using the University’s Professional Development School model.

The Fund for WP is the Foundation’s annual giving program through which alumni and friends alike can make unrestricted gifts to the University. Combined, these gifts of any size make a significant impact on the students at William Paterson University. One of the most important areas of impact is in scholarship support, a strategic priority of William Paterson University. The Fund for WP adds to the University’s slate of scholarships by directly supporting annual scholarships across all disciplines.

Partnering with the William Paterson Alumni Association

Together, the William Paterson University Foundation and the William Paterson Alumni Association continue to focus on increasing the number of alumni who are meaningfully engaged in the life of the University—as mentors, as advisory board members, as class guest speakers, and as webinar experts, just to name a few. This year, the William Paterson Alumni Association provided $40,000 in support of two of the University’s priority projects: Alumni Association Incentive Grants which support students at risk of leaving the University with small grants to make it possible for them to complete their education. The Alumni Association also supported the Peer Leaders program where upperclassmen served as success coaches for new students as they acclimate to life on campus.

The Young Alumni Chapter is comprised of a group of active alumni who plan and execute events focused on bringing young alumni together: networking events, webinars, and social events. They volunteer their time and energy at campus events such as Homecoming and Senior Send-Off. They are committed to providing career advice, providing updates on what is happening at William Paterson, and generally help to locate alumni with whom we have lost touch and highlight young alumni on their new WP website: http://www.wpunj. edu/alumni/young-alumni.html During 2016-2017, the Alumni Relations team executed or collaborated with University partners on 50 engagement events and initiatives with over 1,700 alumni in attendance, 30% for the first time. We continued to find new and exciting ways to engage alumni. In addition to in-person event programming, WP alumni were invited to participate in 13 webinars, addressing pertinent topics such as career development, personal improvement, and educational enrichment, attracting over 400 participants. We continued to expand Homecoming Weekend with a variety of events, including tailgating, a carnival, college-hosted activities, attracting an estimated 2,000 alumni, friends, students, and community members. Alumni Association representation continues at important University events such as the New Student Welcome and Commencement, strengthening the message of alumni engagement. We welcomed more than 100 alumni back to campus for the Pioneer Society Luncheon in December 2016. This annual luncheon brings together alumni who graduated at least 50 years ago and it serves as the welcome to the newest 50th reunion class. In May 2017, we welcomed the class of 1967 to Commencement activities where New Jersey State Senator Paul Sarlo delivered an inspiring 2017 Commencement address.
