Foundation Annual Report July 1, 2017 - June 30, 2018
A Message from President Helldobler
At William Paterson University we are dedicated to providing an affordable and advanced public higher education to our students. In the following Foundation FY18 Annual Report you will find an update on all the wonderful work being done through scholarships, programs, and initiatives that provide great opportunities for William Paterson students. Because of your generosity, our students are able to engage in meaningful research, valuable internships, civic engagement projects, and the priceless experience of being able to study abroad. We are extremely grateful to our donor community and truly appreciate your willingness to give. For many potential University students, being awarded a scholarship is the difference between getting a college education or not. And because of our rich diversity, William Paterson students graduate and go on to change and improve the social fabric of the region, state, and nation. At William Paterson when you give back to one, you are giving back to us all. We are very thankful for the support of our dedicated donors and look forward to establishing new relationships for the future. As a donor you are part of the transformative cycle of giving that changes lives and changes communities. And that is the impact of Will. Power.
Thank you. Richard J. Helldobler, PhD President William Paterson University
A Message from the Foundation Chair and President
As a donor, you understand the impact that a William Paterson University education makes on students. Perhaps you are an alum or a current or former faculty or staff member, a local business leader, or a member of the local community. Although we may have different motivations for supporting the University, the end result is the same: to help William Paterson provide an outstanding and affordable education for students, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college. One of the many ways in which William Paterson supports students is through financial support in the form of donor scholarships. These scholarships demonstrate the donors’ commitment to William Paterson’s students and ensure that vital support is available to deserving young people. As you will read in this report, named donor scholarships often provide the extra support that our students need. William Paterson is focusing on increasing the amount of donor scholarship support available to students, to help fill the gap between the cost of tuition and what our students can afford to pay for their education. One way to ensure that this support is always available to students is through endowed scholarships. This type of scholarship leaves a lasting legacy, ensuring that the donor’s vision is established in perpetuity, and benefiting current and future generations of students who will pass through William Paterson’s doors. Endowed scholarships also set an example, inspiring students to continue the tradition of philanthropy. Because of scholarships, students are able to work fewer hours, incur less student loan debt, live on campus, and participate in all that the University has to offer its students, including research opportunities, extracurricular activities, and access to internships and hands-on career preparation. By supporting William Paterson University, you are part of a community of William Paterson alumni, friends, faculty, and staff who are determined to make a lasting impact on our students. For your past, current, and future support, we thank you.

About the Foundation The William Paterson University Foundation, founded in 1992, is a nonprofit entity created to support the educational mission of William Paterson University and is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of students, enriching resources available to faculty and staff to support pedagogy, research, and creative work, and developing alumni relations in partnership with the University’s Alumni Association. The Foundation is governed by an independent board of directors of 25 private citizens who meet four times a year. In accordance with its by-laws, the Foundation is managed by staff from the Division of Institutional Advancement of the University and is presided over by Vice President Pamela Ferguson, who also serves as president of the Foundation. Foundation financial statements are audited annually by PKF O’Connor Davies LLP and the investment assets are managed by Goldman Sachs.
Fiscal Year 2018 Overview Fundraising Highlights The Foundation raised $3.1 million in cash, gifts-in-kind, bequest intentions, and new pledges, representing a solid fundraising year. During fiscal year 2018, the Foundation benefited from the generosity of 3,266 donors, including alumni, friends, faculty and staff, parents, foundations, and corporations. The annual giving program raised over $538,000, representing the second highest yield in the history of the University. Much of this success was due to those donors who increased their giving to the minimum leadership level of $1,000. In FY18 we also saw a 17.2 percent growth in the $100-$999 gift level. The Impact of Generosity At William Paterson University, more than 80 percent of our students require some form of financial assistance while completing their degree. The overwhelming majority also work part- or full-time while attending school. Still, despite this and competitive tuition rates with minimal annual increases, the average William Paterson student will graduate with $25,000 in debt and spend the next 20 years repaying government and private loans. Scholarships are cholarships turn the about opening doors dream of a well-rounded and creating possibilities college education and all for our students. the future benefits it brings Scholarships enable them into a reality for thousands to become top students of our students. in the Honors College and active members of college organizations. Scholarships free the time a student needs to host and produce campus television and radio shows, write for the two University newspapers, and complete an internship at a local or national network, all while completing the credit load needed to graduate in four years. Scholarships give a student the chance to prepare for and attend an exclusive invitation-only industry conference or allows a student to work fewer hours so he or she can become a student government leader. Precipitated by a generous gift of $1,000,000 from The Henry and Marilyn Taub Foundation, William Paterson University focused even more intently on increasing scholarship support with a goal of raising $10 million. As of June 30, 2018, we have raised $7.5 million towards that goal. Since 2010, the University has increased annual donor-funded scholarships over 214 percent, going from $414,000 to an estimated $1.3 million and resulting in more than 525 scholarship awards. The scholarship endowment has increased 172 percent from $3.2 million to more than $8.71 million during the same period of time. In the past year alone, the University raised more than $1.8 million in endowed and annual scholarship support.

Academic and Program Support Barbara Sugarman Barbara Sugarman established a generous bequest intention in honor of her late husband, William Paterson University professor emeritus, Dan Sugarman, to support the Psychology Film program. Professor Sugarman was a clinical psychologist who joined the William Paterson faculty in 1962. He had a private practice, authored several books and articles, and was often interviewed on television and radio programs. The film program currently runs under psychology professor Chris Holley.
The Henry and M arilyn Taub Foundation In addition to their generous support of scholarships of $250,000 per year through the Henry Taub Scholars Program, The Henry and Marilyn Taub Foundation increased its support for the early childhood learning consortium for preschools in Bergen and Passaic with a gift of $85,000. The program inserts a William Paterson Professor in Residence (PIR) at the preschool level to provide valuable professional development and classroom coaching. In addition to the PIR placement, the consortium has developed a network of educators for teachers to utilize as a resource for exchanging ideas and experiences. As a result of the success of the consortium, The Henry and Marilyn Taub Foundation invested $40,000 for program development at Garfield Pre-K. The Block Play Innovation Program provides professional development training designed to improve children’s visual spatial math skills and vocabulary at Garfield Pre-K. For the fourth consecutive year, The Henry and Marilyn Taub Foundation supported the New Jersey Turnaround Partnership that provides PIR assistance at Paterson School 28, with an award of $40,000.

level donations have increased 140% to the Annual Fund since 2010 The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation generously provided $100,000 in support of the College of Education’s STEAM – Framework for Teaching Across Disciplines Program, which they have supported since 2012.
National Sales Challenge The William Paterson University Foundation also received generous support from corporations with both local and international footprints for the Cotsakos College of Business’s successful National Sales Challenge at the Russ Berrie Institute for Professional Sales. In response to the reality that professional sales is still a practitioner’s discipline, the Russ Berrie Institute for Professional Sales (RBI) created a “boot camp” three years ago for the National Sales Challenge through generous funding from the Russ Berrie Foundation. In consultation with industry experts, the goal of the RBI Sales Career Boot Camp is to give sales students an opportunity to hone their execution skills and to get a taste of the real world through their close interactions with practitioners in the field.

The Fund for WP is the Foundation’s annual giving program through which alumni and friends alike can make unrestricted gifts to the University. Combined, these gifts of any size make a significant impact on the students at William Paterson University. One of the most important areas of impact is in scholarship support, a strategic priority of William Paterson University. The Fund for WP adds to the University’s slate of scholarships by directly supporting annual scholarships across all disciplines. In fiscal year 2018, the annual giving program raised $538,000, the second highest in the history of William Paterson.
Bricks, Bricks, and More Bricks! Generous alumni, parents, and friends gathered together at Homecoming to celebrate the installation of the engraved bricks which line the pathways from University Commons to the Cheng Library. In mid-March, we hosted successful alumni events in Washington, DC and in Miami, Boca Raton, and Naples, Florida. President Waldron provided an update on University initiatives and key trustees in attendance delivered an update on the presidential search and toasted President Waldron for her leadership and commitment to William Paterson. Many thanks to Board of Trustees members Brad Neilley (DC), Linda Niro (Boca Raton), and Debbie Zastocki (Naples). In addition, we met with several alumni and friends of the University throughout that week. If you are interested in becoming more involved with our regional programs or have a seasonal home in one of these areas, please contact Gail Kinney at kinneyg@ wpunj.edu or at 973.720.2615.
Each year a team of more than 30 William Paterson University students staff our annual Phonathon, calling alumni and friends to raise money for The Fund for WP. Our callers will talk with thousands around the country, share news about the University, and yes, ask for support for WP’s areas of greatest need. Educating the leaders of tomorrow is a cause we all care deeply about and one we believe worthy of a few minutes of your time. We know that you’re busy, but we ask that you answer the call. A brief phone call with a student can make a world of difference.

Partnering with the William Paterson Alumni Association Together, the William Paterson University Foundation and the William Paterson Alumni Association continue to focus on increasing the number of alumni who are meaningfully engaged in the life of the University—as mentors, as advisory board members, as class guest speakers, and as webinar experts, just to name a few. For the fifth year in a row, the William Paterson Alumni Association granted $40,000 in support of two of the University’s priority projects: Alumni Association Incentive Grants, which support students at risk of leaving the University with small grants to make it possible for them to complete their education. The Alumni Association also supported the Peer Leaders program where upperclassmen serve as success coaches for new students as they acclimate to life on campus. Funding for Alumni Association Grants is made possible through generous gifts of William Paterson University alumni to The Fund for WP.

The Young Alumni Chapter is comprised of a group of active alumni who plan and execute events focused on bringing young alumni together, such as networking events, webinars, and social events. They volunteer their time and energy at campus events such as Homecoming and Senior Send-Off. They are committed to providing career advice, providing updates on what is happening at William Paterson, and generally help to locate alumni with whom we have lost touch and highlight young alumni on their new WP website: wpunj.edu/alumni/ young-alumni.html
This past year, we delivered an electronic survey to William Paterson alumni with noteworthy trends and data points which were discussed with the Alumni Executive Council’s strategic planning committee to identify distinct action items: 1) early involvement– students and young alumni; 2) build a culture of legacy and philanthropy; 3) social media and information delivery; 4) pathways for volunteers; 5) meeting expressed needs of alumni. This year, we executed or collaborated with campus partners on 50 event opportunities for WP alumni. In addition to in-person event programming, WP alumni were invited to participate in a virtual book club this year, engaging 213 alumni. We also continued our
popular webinar series focusing on topics of value such as financial planning, data analytics, google forms, and career development, attracting 398 alumni participants and alumni experts in their respective fields. The 2017 Homecoming achieved University-wide participation which included an Alumni Biergarten located near the Carnival and across from the football field. A wide variety of events were offered throughout the entire weekend, engaging alumni and friends, and included the Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony.
Pioneer Society Luncheon We welcomed more than 125 alumni back to campus for the Pioneer Society Luncheon in December 2017. This annual luncheon brings together alumni who graduated at least 50 years ago and it serves as the welcome to the newest 50th reunion class. This year, professor emeritus, Gabe Vitalone, made a presentation, “Age Well by Moving,” at the luncheon. Professor Vitalone served the College of Education for 34 years, from 1957 to 1991, teaching educational and developmental psychology. He has a loyal following of alumni who meet regularly with him for breakfast. At age 95, he and his wife, Evelyn, are frequent medal winners at the New Jersey and United States Senior Olympics. In May 2018, we welcomed the reunion Class of 1968 to Commencement activities where Kristine Johnson, WCBSTV anchor, delivered an inspiring 2018 Commencement address.
Our alumni serve as mentors in the Pesce Family Mentoring Institute, as College advisory board members, as class guest speakers, as Alumni Executive Council members, as Foundation Board members, as Board of Trustees members, as ambassadors, as employers, as providers of student internships
