Foundation Annual Report July 1, 2015 - June 30, 2016

A Message from the University President K athleen Waldron The continual and growing support of the William Paterson University Foundation to the University, its students, and its faculty is making a difference. In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2016 the Foundation’s assets reached $23 million and contributed $2.5 million directly to support student scholarships, student mentoring, student leadership programs, student participation in collegiate academic competitions, alumni events, faculty research, and travel. Without this additional support from alumni, friends, and foundations and corporations, the University would not be able to offer additional services and support to nearly 11,000 students and over 400 fulltime faculty. Of most note in the last few years has been the significant increase in scholarships available to students as the Foundation now provides more than $1.1 million a year to worthy students seeking to start or finish their degrees. The Scholarship Endowment has grown from $3.2 million to $7.1 million since 2010 and we continue to receive more and larger gifts from supporters of the Foundation. Contributions to the Foundation, whether in endowed or in annual scholarships, provide critical funding that our students need to realize their personal goals. We hear stories from alumni who speak passionately about the transformative experience that William Paterson University provided them and the critical role the University played in the early years of their personal and professional development. Stories like this cause us to redouble our fundraising efforts so that we can continue making a difference in the lives of students—today and in the years to come. The Foundation support also has led the University to be able to fund student travel to academic conferences to present their own research; to enable students to compete on a national level in collegiate competitions in sales through the Russ Berrie Institute and in financial planning, both in the Cotsakos College of Business; and in radio broadcasting and television studio production

competitions where William Paterson University students have excelled. Faculty received additional funding to enable them to conduct original research in the fields of music, science, art, education, business, and communication, thus enhancing the research productivity of the faculty and supporting career development. This past year, the University obtained its first patent in a cutting-edge scientific area to reduce or impede addictions. The Foundation also has formed a very close relationship with the William Paterson University Alumni Council, and together the two groups have raised alumni participation to record levels. Last year, there were 50 engagement events, including 12 webinars, 20 reunions, and numerous other conferences and symposiums which engaged more than 1,600 alumni with their alma mater. The engagement of the University’s graduates is an important indicator of satisfaction while a student and we are very pleased with the progress we have made over the past few years. I would like to thank the Board of Directors of the William Paterson University Foundation for its stewardship of the University’s endowment and fundraising initiatives and acknowledge the Institutional Advancement team for all its efforts this year. Thank you for your contribution to William Paterson University. Your investment in our students and our faculty is very much appreciated. Kathleen Waldron President William Paterson University

A Message from the Foundation Chair and President Like most universities, the majority of our student body is made up of millennials—those born between the early 1980s and early 2000s—and they are a group about whom popular opinion is definitely mixed. Our experiences, though, have led us to see that they are a civic-minded, engaged, and passionate generation. At William Paterson, we choose to engage with our millennial students—and their non-traditional age peers— in a way that is valuable and beneficial to them. As a University, we strive to provide enriching academic and extra-curricular opportunities and our students take full advantage. In the last year alone, • An Honors College student and scholarship recipient won the student art show competition at the Northeast Regional Honors Conference; • Members of the Iota Alpha chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, the international nursing honor society, participated in a medical mission to Haiti for the fifth consecutive year; • A financial planning major was one of 14 students across the country to receive a $5,000 TD Ameritrade NextGen Scholarship, making him the fifth William Paterson student to do so in the history of the program; • Three WP88.7FM student staff members visited the White House and interviewed Obama administration officials; • A sophomore was one of five students in the state and 218 in the nation to receive the 2016 Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellows Award for Civic Engagement; • A biology major was awarded a first place STEM award in biological sciences at the Emerging Researchers National Conference in Washington, DC; • Our Pioneers completed more than 7,200 hours of community service as part of University-sponsored projects; • Ten STEM teacher candidates engaged in a week-long institute at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, and the University was named a member institution of the NASA Minority Serving Institution Network as a result.

Chair, William Paterson University Foundation

All of the students at William Paterson, regardless of their age, are bright, talented, hard-working, and deserving of our support—and we’re not the only ones who’ve noticed. In the 2015-16 fiscal year, the Foundation and Alumni Association achieved record numbers in almost all areas, including bequests, the annual fund, scholarship distributions, and alumni engagement. William Paterson draws this support from alumni, parents, friends, corporations and foundations because we have clearly demonstrated our intention and our ability to make a difference in the lives of our students and to help them succeed. The academic achievements, civic activities, and career outcomes of every single William Paterson student—millennial or otherwise—have felt the impact of the Foundation and Alumni Association’s efforts, and as we continue to grow, so will they. For your past, current, and future support, we thank you.

About the Foundation The William Paterson University Foundation, founded in 1992, is a nonprofit entity created to support the educational mission of William Paterson University and is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of students, enriching resources available to faculty and staff to support pedagogy, research, and creative work, and developing alumni relations in partnership with the University’s Alumni Association. The Foundation is governed by an independent board of directors of 27 private citizens who meet four times a year. In accordance with its by-laws, the Foundation is managed by staff from the Office of Institutional Advancement of the University and is presided over by Vice President Pamela Ferguson, who also serves as President of the Foundation. Foundation financial statements are audited annually by PKF O’Connor Davies and the investment assets are managed by Goldman Sachs.

Fiscal Year 2016 Overview Fiscal Year 2016 represented yet another year of significant collaboration—collaboration between the Foundation and the Advancement division and the entire University community and collaboration between the Foundation Board and the Alumni Association. These important partnerships continue to grow in strength, building a foundation for support, improving stewardship of donors, and creating a base of alumni and friends who are engaged meaningfully in the life of William Paterson University and who are generous with their talent and their resources, and in doing so making a difference in the lives of our students.

As of June 30, 2016, our investments under management with Goldman Sachs held steady during volatile market conditions. The overall endowment grew 75 percent since 2010, bringing the endowment to $11.7 million.

Estate of Arthur Acquaviva A $266,000 bequest from the estate of the late Arthur M. Acquaviva ’75 has established the Arthur M. Acquaviva Endowed Scholarship to provide support for students with financial need. Acquaviva, who died in 2014, was a teacher and librarian at Verona High School, his alma mater, and was a 1975 graduate of William Paterson University. A lifelong resident of Verona, he was passionate about photography and computer technology, subjects he taught at the high school. He also was known around Verona as a local photographer, and frequently photographed town events and sports.

Fundraising Highlights The Foundation raised $8.74 million in cash, gifts-in-kind, bequest intentions, and new pledges, representing an excellent fundraising year. During 2016, the Foundation benefited from the generosity of 3,849 donors, including alumni, friends, faculty and staff, parents, foundations, and corporations. The annual giving program raised nearly $500,000, representing the highest yield in the history of the University. Much of this success was due to those donors who increased their giving to the minimum leadership level of $1,000 or more, a 32 percent increase in just the last year.

The Impact of Generosity Scholarships One of the Foundation’s major goals is to increase support for student scholarships. Through the generosity of donors, several new endowed and annual scholarships were established in fiscal year 2016.

Thank you to our generous donors for this important support.

Give Something Back Foundation

Scholarship Dinner

The Give Something Back Foundation committed $200,000 to establish a scholarship that will benefit ten students with financial need. This gift was made possible through the generosity of Joan and Jack Hall and Robert Carr, the founder of the Give Something Back Foundation.

Nearly 500 scholarship recipients, donors and their guests, and members of the William Paterson University community gathered for the 17th annual Scholarship Dinner on November 10, 2015. This inspirational event celebrates the many generous scholarship donors while providing an opportunity for these donors to meet our outstanding scholarship recipients. Remarks were made by Katherine Zimny, a junior majoring in earth science and elementary education who is the recipient of the Charlotte P. and Louis Y. Sirota Endowed Scholarship and the donors who established this scholarship in memory of their parents, Bobby and Rick Sirota.

Alumni Jeffrey and Annie Millar Long-time donors and alumni Jeffrey Millar ’80 and his wife, Annie Millar ’15 created the Alumni Business Endowed Scholarship to support a full-time or part-time non-traditional undergraduate student majoring in business.

Bernard J. Milano and the KPMG Foundation Bernie Milano, recipient of a William Paterson University honorary doctor of humane letters, established the Bernard J. Milano/KPMG Endowed Scholarship to benefit highachieving junior-status students majoring in accounting.

Basem and Muna Hishmeh A fundraising dinner hosted by the William Paterson University Foundation, philanthropists Basem and Muna Hishmeh, and the Center for Arab American Philanthropy raised more than $365,000 over three years for the University’s Arab American Scholarship Program. The Fund, created in 2011, provides support for undergraduate students with financial need who seek to become leaders in their disciplines and contribute positively to their community.

Scholarship Committee

The scholarship committee consists of representatives of the Foundation and the Alumni Executive Council. Bequest Intentions We received two very significant bequest intentions this year. One is from an anonymous donor; this bequest will ultimately establish an endowment for the music department to support programs and residencies in the areas of classical, new, and world music. The second is from an alumna and former William Paterson University faculty member; this bequest will ultimately provide a naming opportunity on the University campus. We also received three generous bequest intentions: from Herbert and Marjorie Goldstein to establish a named scholarship endowment fund; from Francis Pinto to establish an endowed scholarship in education, and from an anonymous donor to establish an endowed scholarship in honor of the Class of 1966.

The Fund for WP is the Foundation’s annual giving program through which alumni and friends alike can make unrestricted gifts to the University. Combined, these gifts of any size make a significant impact on students at William Paterson University. One of the most important areas of impact is in scholarship support, a strategic priority of William Paterson University. The Fund for WP adds to the University’s slate of scholarships by directly supporting nearly 170 annual scholarships across all disciplines. These scholarships help deserving students succeed.

In November, we traveled to DC to host an alumni reception in the Rayburn Building near Capitol Hill. Nearly two dozen attended the event. Alumni Dan Cimmino ’94, Gena Zak ’97, and Kisha Manning ’07 are providing leadership in organizing DC Chapter events for alumni.

William Paterson in Florida and Washington, DC In March, President Waldron, Pamela Ferguson, and Janis Schwartz, executive director of alumni relations visited with alumni, friends, and former faculty in Florida. We hosted receptions in Boca Raton and Naples. The chair of the Board of Trustees, Fred Gruel, joined us in Naples as did Bill Joosten ’66, a member of the Alumni Executive Council of the Alumni Association. President Waldron provided more than 100 William Paterson Floridians with a University update outlining new initiatives and programs, campus activities, and construction, and discussed the importance of alumni remaining close to their alma mater.

During 2015-2016, the Alumni Relations team executed or collaborated with University partners on 50 engagement events and initiatives with 1,668 alumni in attendance, 30 percent for the first time. The Alumni Relations team continued to find new and exciting ways to engage alumni. We continued to expand Homecoming Weekend with a variety of events, including tailgating, a carnival, collegehosted activities, and a star-gazing event.

Alumni events included 12 highly popular webinars, five special trips/excursions, and more than 20 reunions, receptions, and stewardship events, many in partnership with the academic colleges/departments. Alumni Association representation continues at important University events such as Freshman Convocation and Commencement, strengthening the message of alumni engagement. We welcomed more than 100 alumni back to campus for the Pioneer Society Luncheon in December 2015. This annual luncheon brings together alumni who graduated at least 50 years ago and it serves as the welcome to the newest 50th reunion class. In May 2016, we welcomed the Class of 1966 to Commencement activities where Senator Cory Booker delivered an inspiring 2016 Commencement address. Cory Booker

About William Paterson University William Paterson University is a leading public University with nearly 11,000 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered by five academic colleges: Arts and Communication, Cotsakos College of Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Health. Its 370-acre wooded campus is located in suburban Wayne, New Jersey, just 20 miles from New York City, adjacent to 1,200 acres of wetlands and woodlands, and only three miles from the historic Paterson Great Falls. The University offers a wide range of learning opportunities in its classrooms, laboratories, and studios, and throughout the campus, as well as at various off-campus locations. William Paterson’s faculty members provide a valuable blend of accomplished scholarship and practical, applied experience. Among the University’s faculty are 41 Fulbright scholars and recipients of numerous other awards, grants, and fellowships. Students benefit from individualized attention from faculty mentors, small class sizes, and numerous research, internship, and clinical experiences. The institution’s nearly 73,000 alumni can be found throughout New Jersey, the nation, and the world, using their William Paterson degrees and experiences as a springboard to professional accomplishment and personal growth. They are leaders in the arts, business, health care, sports, entertainment, the media, and education. They are public servants, artists, musicians, teachers, scientists, television personalities, authors, politicians, crime fighters, and entrepreneurs. Their achievements reflect the University’s mission and commitment to preparing graduates for success in their careers, communities, and lives.
