In high school, the same people did the same stuff the same way all the time. When it came time for college, I was ready to break away from that. I wanted a brand new experience not just in the classroom, but all the way around. At William Paterson, I got the chance to reinvent myself.
YOUR NEXT PASSIONATE DEBATE could count toward credit. William Paterson’s political science program gives students the skills they need to change lives locally and globally. Students get the big picture with an international focus and compete against some of the brightest minds in two “Model United Nations” competitions—and win. Our extensive internships and Fulbright Award–winning faculty make our graduates equally competitive in the professional arena.
Meet Jennifer Bauer MAJOR: POLITICAL SCIENCE
YOUR NEXT MENTOR could be Susan Dinan. As the director of the University Honors College and an associate professor of history, she really gets to know her students in multiple ways. And sometimes she’s the one who does the learning. “Active, involved students like Jennifer have taught me that the Honors College is very much a way of life—and a busy one. They’ve inspired me as a director, a teacher, and a researcher.”
YOUR NEXT BOND could last a lifetime. Jennifer is a member of Alpha Sigma Tau, one of William Paterson’s 25 sororities and fraternities. “It’s been equal parts demanding and rewarding,” says Jennifer. “It demands that I live out the values I’ve adopted, that I become a better person, and that I balance my academic goals with a healthy social life. But the rewards are immeasurable. I have a whole new awareness of the people around me—where I stand with them, and who I can count on to stand with me for the rest of my life.”
YOUR NEXT TEAM OF EXPERTS could be your classmates. As a student in the Honors College, Jennifer also took part in the honors learning community. “I was able to bridge the gap between my academic and social lives,” says Jennifer. “Members are always lounging in the ‘pod,’ watching a movie like Crash or The Motorcycle Diaries, and later discussing the implications and context with a professor who stops by. The experience really blurs the line between learning and living—making both even better.”
YOUR NEXT HONOR could be your college. The Honors College is more than smaller classes with bigger opportunities. It’s a learning community within a residence hall. It’s personal attention from expert faculty. And more than anything, the Honors College is a chance to lead, discuss, create, and build. Working one-on-one with faculty mentors, students are given freedom to lead projects that they’ve developed. They get to experience William Paterson in an entirely new setting. And it helps them build friendships they can only find in the Honors College.

I wanted to keep my options open and make a thoughtful choice. Sort of like taking myself out of the old context and asking, ‘What if?’ That’s when I found William Paterson, the professional sales program, and my passion. Now I know when it comes to life after college, I’ll have all kinds of great choices all over again.
Joseph Joshua

YOUR NEXT PRESENTATION will be televised. Through its Russ Berrie Institute for Professional Sales, the University offers the country’s first and only bachelor of science degree in professional sales. We also have a state-of-the-art professional sales lab, where student presentations are digitally recorded. That instant feedback gives them rock-solid sales skills.
YOUR NEXT INTERNSHIP could turn heads. A local financial corporation sponsors the RBI Sales Leaders Program in a round-the-world tour of economic powerhouses (like Qatar). When reps from the corporation met Joshua, they just had to make him an offer. He accepted. And now his internship lets him build on his two strengths: managing finance and sales. “I originally wanted to get a degree in finance,” says Joshua. “So this internship is tailor-made.”
YOUR NEXT CLOSE FRIEND might call another continent home. “My friends are from all over. My closest friend, Joseph, is from Kenya,” says Joshua. “That’s the beauty of being on this campus. You’ll know how to communicate with people from a variety of perspectives just by walking to class and talking to your friends.” “My job isn’t just to sell things. It’s to build relationships. My goal isn’t to become a salesman—it’s to become a trusted advisor,” says Joshua.
Meet Joshua Schiller MAJOR: PROFESSIONAL SALES
Your next power tie.
YOUR NEXT TOUGH CUSTOMER won’t stand a chance. With an impressive internship on his resumé and all the experience he gained in classroom simulations, Joshua says he’s ready for anything. “I’ve learned how to think on my feet and spot a great opportunity anywhere. That person you sit next to on the airplane might turn out to be your most important customer.”

YOUR NEXT MENTOR could be one of our professional sales faculty. Our professors are not only respected scholars in the academic field of sales but experienced sales professionals as well. Every day they bring the real world with them into the classroom, sharing their passion and knowledge of sales to help students become the next generation of business leaders.

I always knew I was college material. It was just a matter of finding the right college. William Paterson had everything I was looking for. The education department is great and the faculty are incredible role models. I’m getting real teaching experience before I graduate. People here keep telling me I can make a big difference in my community. And I believe them.
YOUR NEXT CHALLENGE may be their next hope. As a graduate of the Paterson public schools, Lindsay is a Paterson Teachers for Tomorrow scholar (PT4T), which means she is committed to teaching in the city of Paterson for at least three years after college graduation. “Many kids where I’m from don’t think college is for them,” she says. “They don’t realize that they have what it takes to be a double major in education and math. Then I show up—and get them to think again.”
Meet Lindsay LeDuc
YOUR NEXT COMMUTE could be to a whole new world. Not everyone lives on campus. And that’s okay. “A lot of people think that as a commuter, you don’t get the rich campus experience and you don’t interact as much,” says Lindsay. “But it’s just not true. I have the freedom to participate as much as I want. It’s all here. There’s always something going on and I find that most of my friends who commute are like me—they don’t want to just come to class and leave right away. They join clubs, hang out, and study in the University Commons for a few hours.”
YOUR NEXT 20 HOURS could change your life. Part of the secondary-education requirement is 20 hours of classroom observation. “It’s called the real world,” says Lindsay. “And we get to experience it before we graduate. During my observation, I saw make-or-break moments where I learned what it takes to be a great teacher. For me, it just confirmed that I’m definitely in the right major. And the preparation I received at William Paterson confirmed that I am in the right place.”
MAJOR: SECONDARY EDUCATION AND MATHEMATICS
YOUR NEXT MENTOR could be Djanna Hill, professor, Department of Secondary and Middle School Education. “It’s been wonderful to watch Lindsay blossom into a teacher,” says Professor Hill. “As director of the Paterson Teachers for Tomorrow program, I had the privilege of knowing Lindsay as a scholarship candidate, as a high school student, as a student assistant, and finally—and most importantly—as a person. We have so much in common. We’re both passionate about urban education. We’re both mad about our subjects—I’m science and she’s math. And we’re both looking to inspire future generations to change the world—starting with the city of Paterson.” YOUR NEXT CLASSROOM might be where you meet your first students. William Paterson’s College of Education has been a major resource for providing the world with forward-thinking educators. Our graduates learn by collaboration. They’re taught that, as professionals in the education system, their learning and development doesn’t end at graduation. And like their professors at William Paterson, they lead by example.

I knew my major would be challenging. I knew that it would mean more responsibility and more creative time-management skills than I needed in high school. I also knew that when I graduated, I’d be a sought-after candidate in an in-demand field. What I didn’t expect was that I’d have so much help along the way.
YOUR NEXT CLASSROOM could be a hospital room. We have contacts in more than 20 agencies within a 25-mile radius of William Paterson University. Among those we partner with most frequently: • Hackensack University Medical Center • St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center • Valley Hospital • Morristown Memorial Hospital • Valley Home Care • Visiting Health Services of New Jersey • Greystone Psychiatric Hospital
YOUR NEXT “PATIENT” might teach you something. The Nel Bolger, R.N. Nursing Laboratory is equipped with the latest in simulated lab technology. Opened in 2008, the Bolger lab recreates scenarios that play out in actual ICUs every day. The lab features observation areas, computerized patient-simulation mannequins, and a control station that makes everything come to life. It’s also outfitted with robotic digital cameras and editing facilities for producing DVD “resumés” that students can show to potential employers.
YOUR NEXT JOB INTERVIEW could be your last. Hospitals know us, and they know how well we prepare our graduates for today’s health care challenges. By adding your name to our reputation, hospitals and health care settings across the country will know a great deal about you before you even show up for the interview. In fact, 93 percent of our graduates are working full-time within six months of graduation and 7 percent go on to graduate school. And with the demand for health care workers in nearly every state expected to rise, you’ll be ready—and busy.
Meet Philip A. Tagalog MAJOR: NURSING
YOUR NEXT MEETING could start with you at the head of the table. For two years, Philip was the president of the Student Nurses Association at William Paterson. “As president of the SNA, I inspired my classmates to look beyond nursing school and start visualizing unlimited career options linked to the field, like informatics, policy reform, and entrepreneurship. It was also a great opportunity for me to develop my communication skills and network.” With more than 75 organizations on campus, your shot at a leadership role won’t be a long shot.
YOUR NEXT MENTOR could be Julie Bliss, professor and chair of the Department of Nursing. “I get to share my passion for nursing with self-directed students like Philip—students who take on the hard courses and the heavy workloads,” says Professor Bliss. “I get to inspire a new generation of nurses to bring fresh energy and enthusiastic dedication to bedsides all across the country. And I get to watch them become the kind of nurse I always strived to be—which makes my contribution to health care much more rewarding.”

When I first transferred to William Paterson, I wanted to study jazz. But after I got here and I saw how much students were able to do and lead and have access to, I switched to communication with a focus on film study. It was tough to choose between two stellar programs, but I know I made the best decision for me.
Meet Kamilah Bayete MAJOR: COMMUNICATION
YOUR NEXT MOVE could lead to a whole bunch of great opportunities. Kamilah transferred from a community college in Philadelphia. She came to William Paterson after following her passion and hearing some solid recommendations. The process was smooth. Once she got here, she jumped from jazz to film studies. That set her up for a position as a casting assistant for Transformers 2, several enviable internships, and eventually a job offer as a full-time events planner for celeb gatherings. And as one of the approximately 1,200 transfer students who enter the University each year, the only move she’s ever regretted after living on campus for two years was the move out.
14
YOUR NEXT INTERNSHIP could be on the air. Kamilah landed an internship at Air America Radio, announcing the traffic and weather every Saturday night during Rachel Maddow’s show. William Paterson students intern at a wide range of media outlets, taking advantage of our proximity to New York City, the media capital of the world.
YOUR NEXT MOUNTAIN-TOP MOMENT might happen on the fourth floor. Kamilah lived in High Mountain West, one of two residence halls that opened in 2006 to create a modern, inspiring “learning community”—and a 24/7 campus experience. All suites have everything you’d expect, which can be bittersweet. “Of course, I eventually had to move on,” Kamilah recalls. “But I’m crying because I loved it so much.”
YOUR NEXT MENTOR could be Diana Peck, professor of communication. “I’ve been with the University for 35 years,” says Professor Peck. “I’ve seen it grow up. It’s broadened its mission and community outreach. I see the same kind of momentum in the students. Every year they get more sophisticated, more driven. Kamilah is a great example. She’s a real self-starter. I helped coordinate one of her internships and I’ve been in her corner ever since.”
YOUR NEXT ROLE could be the lead. Our communication department is among the best in the state university system. Our students have access to fully equipped, state-of-the-art television and radio studios. Kamilah worked at our TV station, WPBN, on the currentevents discussion show, Open Minds. She worked in and out of the control room, from operating the teleprompter to being the writer and producer.
