Annual Report 2013-14

A Message from the Foundation President: As I begin my fifth year with William Paterson, I reflect with pride on how the University, the Foundation, and the division which helps support them both have changed since my arrival. To name but a few ways, we have added dozens of academic programs and degrees, including two at the doctoral level. We completed and have begun to implement a ten-year strategic plan which focuses our efforts and brings us closer to our goal of being a model of outstanding and affordable higher education. The Office of Campus Activities and Student Leadership has become Campus Activities, Service, and Leadership and taken on responsibility for our campus-wide civic engagement initiative. Even the landscape is changing as we complete our second new academic building, University Hall, and begin work on the renovation of the rest of the academic corridor. The Foundation has cultivated and received multiple million dollar gifts for programs and scholarships. Through careful management and increased philanthropy, we have grown our endowment overall and shown significant gains in scholarship funds in particular. We have revised the terms of and improved our partnership with the Alumni Association and its Executive Council, and, in conjunction with them, increased the number of annual scholarship awards available to our students. In Institutional Advancement, we have increased both the number of and attendance at cultivation, fundraising, and stewardship events, and expanded the scope and nature of our touches to constituencies on and off campus. We have enhanced the visibility of the division within the University community by pairing specific fundraisers with College deans. We have built important programs that educate and engage potential donors at all levels including our future alumni and that comprehensively steward those who do donate after a gift is made. We have refined the roles and skills of our team, with onethird of them coming on board after I joined the University. Finally, the Advancement division feels so strongly about building scholarship support at the University that collectively and personally, we fund two student scholarships per year. The changes we have made and the stories we tell about them all have one underlying theme: support of a common goal. Whether through collegial endorsement of ideas and improvements, tax payer votes for capital funding, or charitable gifts that provide financial aid, we have all contributed with the aim of creating a college experience that is exciting and interesting as it happens and worthwhile and impactful in the years that follow. William Paterson University is a place that transforms lives— aren’t you proud to have been a part of that? Thank you for all your support!

Foundation Annual Report

July 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015 About the Foundation

Fundraising Highlights

The William Paterson University Foundation, founded in 1992, is a nonprofit entity created to support the educational mission of William Paterson University and is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of students, enriching resources available to faculty and staff to support pedagogy, research, and creative work, and developing alumni relations in partnership with the University’s Alumni Association.

The Foundation raised $3.56 million in cash, giftsin-kind, bequest intentions, and new pledges, representing a solid fundraising year. During 2015, the Foundation benefited from the generosity of 3,958 donors, including alumni, friends, faculty and staff, parents, foundations, and corporations. The annual giving program raised $471,200, representing the second highest yield in the history of the University. Much of this success was due to those donors who increased their giving to the minimum leadership level of $1,000 or more, a 55 percent increase in the last four years.

The Foundation is governed by an independent board of directors of 25 private citizens who meet four times a year. In accordance with its by-laws, the Foundation is managed by staff from the Office of Institutional Advancement of the University and is presided over by Vice President Pamela Ferguson, who also serves as president of the Foundation. Foundation financial statements are audited by O’Connor Davies and the investment assets are managed by Goldman Sachs.

Fiscal Year 2015 Overview Fiscal year 2015 represented yet another year of significant collaboration—collaboration between the Foundation and the Advancement division and the entire University community and collaboration between the Foundation Board and the Alumni Association. These important partnerships continue to grow in strength, building a foundation for support, improving stewardship of donors, and creating a base of alumni and friends who are engaged meaningfully in the life of William Paterson University and who are generous with their talent and their resources, and in doing so make a difference in the lives of our students. Total Assets of the Foundation We continue to see a steady increase in our investments under management with Goldman Sachs as well as solid fundraising results. Since fiscal year 2012, the total assets of the Foundation have grown 47 percent from $15.9 million to $23.3 million in fiscal year 2015. In the same four year period, the overall endowment grew 48 percent bringing the endowment to $11.1 million.

The Impact of Generosity Scholarships One of the Foundation’s major goals is to increase support for student scholarships. Through the generosity of donors, several new endowed and annual scholarships were established in fiscal year 2015.

M arie Louise McCarthy endowed scholarship

Joan Torrens Hall generously established a $200,000 endowed scholarship in memory of her sister, Marie Louise McCarthy, who was a 1944 graduate of William Paterson University and a teacher and principal in public education. Scholarships will be awarded to students who maintain a grade point average of 3.0, remain on track to graduate in four years, and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to students from Garfield High School where Mrs. McCarthy Marie Louise McCarthy taught for forty years.

Henry and M arilyn Taub Foundation William Paterson University received a $1 million donation for scholarships from The Henry and Marilyn Taub Foundation, the largest gift for scholarships in University history. Scholarship contributions such as this are much needed in an institution that serves many students who rely on state and federal support, loans, savings, and fullor part-time jobs to pay for their education. The Henry Taub Scholarships will be awarded to 30 to 50 students with the goal of eliminating their need to take on debt to pay for their tuition.

Basem and Muna Hishmeh Philanthropists Basem and Muna Hishmeh, who have generously supported a number of University programs, pledged $100,000 per year for four years in support of the University’s Arab American Scholarship Fund. The Fund, created in 2011, provides support for undergraduate students with financial need who seek to become leaders in their disciplines and contribute to their community.

For the past sixteen years, the Fred C. Rummel Foundation has supported William Paterson by providing scholarship support for students in the Honors College. In this time, the Rummel Foundation has donated $348,000 and assisted 42 current and past scholarship recipients.

Endowed Scholarships FY12 - FY15 Over the last four years, the William Paterson University Foundation has increased the scholarship endowment by nearly 70 percent. Through endowment earnings and other annual scholarships, the Foundation awarded nearly 500 scholarships amounting to over $650,000 in fiscal year 2015. Through the generous support of our donors, we estimate $1.1 million of student scholarship support in the 2015-2016 Endowed academic year. Scholarships FY12-‐FY15 2015

The Fund for WP is the Foundation’s annual giving program through which alumni and friends alike can make unrestricted gifts to the University. Combined, these gifts of any size make a significant impact on the students at William Paterson University. One of the most important areas of impact is in scholarship support, a strategic priority of William Paterson University. The Fund for WP adds to the University’s slate of scholarships by directly supporting more than 160 annual scholarships across all disciplines. These scholarships help deserving students succeed. Student lives are also directly enriched by gifts designated to the colleges. In the Cotsakos College of Business, these donations provided support for students to attend national and regional competitions in sales, financial planning, and business case, as well as present their research papers at academic conferences. In the College of Science and Health, these funds supported student success via assistantships and research in addition to supporting faculty-student research opportunities. The College of Humanities and Social Sciences also sent 24 undergraduate and graduate students to seven different conferences in their disciplines in English, psychology, and philosophy. The College of Education hired eight reading tutors for K-12 students attending the Reading Clinic. In the College of the Arts and Communication, funds were used to acquire music equipment, technical resources, and art supplies and to upgrade communication facilities. The Cheng Library purchased books and media resources and also hosted the Sixth Biennial William Carlos Williams Society Conference in June.

Tours of Hobart M anor For the 2014 holiday season, the Hobart Manor Revitalization Committee partnered with the Master Gardener Association of Passaic County to decorate the Manor. In addition to a reception paired with tickets to a holiday show at Shea Auditorium, the Committee organized tours for alumni and other members of the community in an effort to promote Hobart Manor and its status as a registered historical landmark. The tour was developed by student and Committee member Gabriela Salvador and was so successful overall that, during the spring semester, she worked with the University’s Instruction and Research Technology (IRT) team to create and produce a video tour of the

the downtown Paterson post office and courthouse and the addition to William Paterson University’s Hobart Manor. Notably in attendance at the tea were Garret Hobart IV and his wife and granddaughter. Mr. Hobart is the grandson of the original owner of the Manor and great-grandson of the 24th vice president of the United States. The Hobart family toured changes to the Manor with student guide Gabriela Salvador, who was dressed in period garb.

Heritage Society This year, we formally inducted a record 93 members into the Heritage Society, WP’s recognition society for donors who have given for more than 20 years. Heritage Society members were recognized and received their induction pins at seven events which included the Cheng Library Digital Archives event at Homecoming weekend, the annual Scholarship Dinner, the Pioneer Society Luncheon, Florida alumni events in Sarasota and Naples, the 50th Reunion, and the Hobart Manor Sunday Tea. 11

Partnering with the William Paterson Alumni Association Together, the William Paterson University Foundation and the William Paterson Alumni Association continued to focus on increasing the number of alumni who are meaningfully engaged in the life of the University—as mentors, as advisory board members, as class guest speakers, or as webinar experts, just to name a few. During 2014-2015, the Alumni Relations team executed or collaborated with University partners on 59 engagement events and initiatives with 1,655 alumni in attendance, nearly 600 for the first time. The Alumni Relations team continued to find new and exciting ways to engage alumni. We hosted an expanded Homecoming Weekend of events that included tailgating, a carnival, college-hosted activities, star-gazing, and a display of the digitization project in the library. Events included 12 highly popular webinars, five special trips/excursions, and more than 20 reunions, receptions, and stewardship events, many in partnership with the academic colleges/ departments. 12

Alumni Association representation continues at important University events such as Freshman Convocation and Commencement, strengthening the message of alumni engagement. We welcomed more than 100 alumni back to campus for the Pioneer Society Luncheon in December 2014. This annual luncheon brings together alumni who graduated at least 50 years ago and it serves as the welcome to the newest 50th reunion class. In May 2015, we welcomed the class of 1965 to activities where alumnus Will Pesce ’73 delivered an inspiring 2015 Commencement address to the graduates.

This year alumni served as mentors in the Pesce Family Mentoring Institute, as College advisory board members, as class guest speakers, and as Alumni Executive Council members.

In the last four years, alumni participation has increased by over 40 percent. This past year was a dynamic one for alumni social media, creating 7,344 opportunities for exposure to alumni/students/friends of the University. We have quadrupled followers on Instagram and garnered 5,540 views on YouTube.

Doug Hamilton is stepping down as the president of the Alumni Association after six years. We thank him for his dedicated years of service and leadership. He is a true “WP Pioneer”!
