2021 BEST OF THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS, WINDERMERE'S FAVORITES

© Katinka2014 | Dreamstime.com 203538121

SAN JUAN ISLAND Comfortable Community, Breathtaking Nature & Rich Culture

As soon as you step off the Washington State Ferry, you’ll feel the lovely, slower pace of island time. People are friendly and smiling. In summer, visitors from all over the world come to play and see the whales. In winter, the island is at its coziest, when the approximately 7,000 year-round island residents nestle up with their favorite book, take cooking or naturalist classes and enjoy free lectures at the library. Completely walkable Friday Harbor has some of the best and safest schools in Washington as well as a state-of-the-art Island Hospital. The streets are lined with shops and charming boutiques, grocery stores, restaurants, fitness and yoga studios, art galleries and museums. There is a historic movie theater, a bowling alley and the San Juan Community Theatre, delighting patrons with plays, as well as classical and contemporary music performances. The Saturday Farmer’s Market, the Community Food Coop, the many farms and countless, adorable Farm-to-Table restaurants make the island a food lover’s paradise. The cute coastal town of Friday Harbor on the 55-square mile San Juan Island, is not only San Juan County’s government seat and a U.S. Port of Entry, but also the only incorporated town in the entire island archipelago, making San Juan the most convenient of the islands to live on. Gorgeous San Juan Island, with its lush farm valleys, rugged coastlines, breathtaking beaches and Madrona forested hills, sits in the Olympic Rain Shadow and enjoys over 247 days of sun per year. The temperate climate is a gardener’s dream and perfect for an active, outdoor lifestyle. Two marvelous National Historic Parks, a County Park and the renowned Whale Watch Park with its historic lighthouse (one of the best places to see Orcas from land in the world) are perfect for hiking, biking, birding, beach combing and horseback riding. The crystal-clear waters of the Salish Sea beg to be explored by boat or kayak. While commercial fishing has slowed, it is not uncommon to find a “Gone Fishing” sign on a closed store. There are excellent crabbing, shrimping, salmon, halibut and ling cod seasons, and if you happen to live on the right beach, you can even grow your own oysters! San Juan Islanders are a celebratory bunch and don’t miss any opportunity to honor their rich history and culture. Festivals, fairs, parades and community events are on the calendar almost every month of the year. With the 4th of July Parade, fireworks and County Fair in summer, the Friday Harbor Film Festival in fall, the Island Lights Festival and old-fashioned Christmas Celebrations in winter, there is always something fun going on. Whether you are a history buff volunteering at the National Historic Parks, a whale lover educating boaters, a volunteer at the animal shelter or wildlife rehabilitation center, there are a multitude of rewarding opportunities to be part of the island community. What will you do with your island time?

PARKS, BEACHES & TRAILS We Love AMERICAN CAMP & ENGLISH CAMP

National Historic Parks

The 1859 Pig War on San Juan Island — so called because its only causality was a pig, set in motion a border dispute and a 12-year occupation by American and British forces on opposite ends of the isle. The two stunning camps left behind, with a combined acreage of 2,072, couldn’t be more different from each other and became National Historic Parks in 1966 by an act of Congress. American Camp on the south end features truly awe-inspiring prairies and many different beaches, among them San Juan’s longest and wildest: South Beach with its dramatic driftwood formations, picnic benches and fire pits for Summer night bonfires and s’mores. The interpretive center and historic barracks give a glimpse into what army life must have been like 150 years ago. Beautiful Granny’s Cove is shallow and protected and gets warm enough for a little swim in Summer. Jakles Lagoon and 4th of July Beach are calm and protected by Mt Finlayson and its windswept wolf trees. Mt Finlayson and the lagoons are the gateway to gorgeous nature trails winding through the entire park. Cattle Point Light House on the south end with an almost 360-degree view, is one of the best places to go birding on the island. It is common to see foxes, rabbits, bald eagles, numerous seabirds, otters, seals, sea lions and orca whales. On the north end of the island, wooded English Camp is nestled around protected Garrison Bay. The remaining barracks double as an interpretive center and backdrop for reenactments of the Pig War and

19th century camp life on summer weekends. There is a small, formal English garden and a Royal Marine cemetery as well as an abundance of scenic trails to explore. The flat Bell Point Loop winds through old orchards and forest along the bay for a lovely 1.7 mile round-trip. A bit more challenging is the steep, 1.5mile hike to Mt. Young, offering the most rewarding views from the top. English Camp is adjacent to the Roche Harbor Trails and Roche Harbor Highlands properties, each with a maze of trails to explore. GPS is spotty out there.

LIME KILN STATE PARK Also known as the “Whale Watch Park”, Lime Kiln State Park, on the west side of San Juan Island is one of the best places to watch orcas from land in the world. The steep cliffs and deep waters surrounding the park let whales and other wildlife feed very close to shore. Orcas can be observed year-round, with most sightings being in July and August. The Lime Kiln Lighthouse doubles as an interpretive center in summer.

KING SISTERS PRESERVE Owned by the King family since 1930, four King sisters and the Land Bank share ownership of this gem in the heart of San Juan Island. Most of the protected land is leased to farmers. A public trail parallels San Juan Valley Road.

“MORE THAN JUST WHALES − Awesome Park! Visited in September, didn’t seen any whales but a few seals and dolphins! Weather was perfect even when cloudy. We loved that they “idiot-proofed” the trails, with signs pointing out the best spot to see the whales, and how far until we walked there. One of our favorite stops on San Juan Island, looking forward to visiting again during whale watching season!”− Naturetack / tripadvisor.com

13

“GARRISON BAY IS WONDERFUL − Take the time to visit this location. The history of the island comes alive with the buildings and information. The walk around the grounds gives you a real sense of what it was like to live there a 100 years ago. The trails are easy and follow some of the shoreline If it hadn't been so chilly, we would have spent more time here.” − Lana G. | tripadvisor.com

MT. GRANT PRESERVE Located around five miles from Friday Harbor on Beaverton Valley Road, Mt. Grant Preserve is San Juan Island’s highest, publicly accessible mountain. A one-mile trail winds through old-growth Douglas Firs and leads to a sweeping 360-degree view of Mt. Baker, Mt. Rainier and Glacier Peak, as well as the Gulf Islands, the Olympics and the Cascades.

SAN JUAN COUNTY PARK This 12-acre jewel where the 1998 feature film “Practical Magic” was filmed is the only park on San Juan Island with overnight camping facilities. There are picnic tables, a picnic shelter and barbeques for day visitors. The crescent-moon shaped pebble beach has a boat launch and is a popular place for kayakers to put in. The water is shallow and calm and perfect to cool off on a hot summer day. On top of the rocky bluffs surrounding the beach you’ll find a wide-open grassy field for playing games, sunbathing or whale watching. On Friday evenings in the summer the staff of the local Wolf Hollow Rehabilitation Center gives wildlife talks here.

HARTMAN BASEBALL FIELD On the corner of Spring and Price Street in Friday Harbor, is the home of Friday Harbor High School’s Wolverines. This popular ball field is also the starting point of many of Friday Harbor’s parades.

JACKSON’S BEACH The former site of San Juan Island’s salmon cannery, this nice driftwood beach is just outside Friday Harbor town limits. There is a boat launch, picnic benches, barbeques and a volleyball court in the sand surrounded by prairie grass. The beach is popular with dog lovers.

JOHN O. LINDE COMMUNITY PARK Friday Harbor’s newest sports park offers soccer, softball and multipurpose fields, as well as a concession stand, playground and walking trails. The athletic fields and playground are dog-friendly and open to the public if not reserved.

SUNKEN PARK Just above the ferry lanes, this quiet refuge in the middle of town features a well-maintained basketball court, picnic benches, fun murals and a shady gazebo for hot summer days. Almost always you’ll find a few basketballs laying in the grass, waiting for the next kid or kid at heart to play.

TURN POINT PARK This precious marine park, nestled in between private property, is a popular spot for boaters to put in to paddle to Turn Island, just a quarter mile away or Jackson’s Beach, three miles away.

BEAUTIFUL AND RELAXING − We decided to camp here and are very happy we did! Everything was well maintained and camping so close to the beach was amazing. We could hear orcas and seals as we slept. I would definitely come back!”− Heatherlouise2018, Chicago / tripadvisor.com

THE INSIDE SCOOP . . . WHO LIVES HERE FULL TIME? According to a December 2018 Census Bureau survey, San Juan Island has a population of 7,810 which is 1.9% greater than it was in 2017. The median age is 52 years and female to male ratio is 53% to 47%. From the 2017 American Community Survey, the percentage of owner households to total households is 72% (28% are renters). Sixty-two percent of homeowners have moved here since the year 2000. San Juan Island had a median home value of $437,900 and average monthly rent of $1,045 (US average is $949). The average household size is 2.1 and 95% of the homes here were built before 2009 (source Towncharts. com).

WHERE DOES ISLAND DRINKING WATER COME FROM? Water is a precious commodity everywhere, but especially on solid rock formations surrounded by salt water, like San Juan Island. Consumable water is at a premum. While many private residences on San Juan Island have private or community wells, all the water piped through Friday Harbor comes from the Trout Lake watershed on San Juan Island’s pristine westside. A single Friday Harbor household pays a minimum of $125/month for water, sewer and garbage.

Original Art © Sarah Hansen, 2021

WHAT ABOUT ELECTRICITY? Many island residents would love to live “off the grid,” and some do. However, San Juan Island lacks the winter daylight necessary for a good solar power system, does not have large enough streams to support small hydroelectric systems and doesn’t have consistent enough wind for efficient wind power generation. So, most of us buy power from OPALCO, our local power and light cooperative, which delivers it to us via three separate submarine cables. During winter storms, power outages are just something we accept as part of the wonder of island living.

GARBAGE GOES WHERE? San Juan Island residents are very conscientious about reducing, reusing and recycling, partly because we’re all protective of our island and partly because garbage is so expensive to ship off-island. Our transfer station just outside of town, is where we recycle, dump garbage and pay by weight. Everything disposed of is then shipped back to the mainland.

WHEN WILL I KNOW I’M AN ISLANDER? When do I become an “ISLANDER” is a question asked by many who make the decision to relocate to our beautiful islands and permanently change their zip code to call the San Juan Islands home. For many it’s the day they unpack their last box, for some it’s their first OPALCO bill and for others it’s when they begin saying “I’M HEADED TO AMERICA” when going to the mainland.

MORE ISLAND LORE . . .

IS GOOD HELP HARD TO FIND? Our Realtor team at Windermere is the largest and most productive in the County and over the years, we’ve had the opportunity to work with many different contractors and vendors; most good, some bad and a few ugly. We also have a professional property management department that has contributed to a useful Directory of Vendors. Even so, there are some contractors who have such a busy schedule, you might have to look off-island for someone to do the job you want. It’s wise to ask around and get references for any work you want done. Feel free to give us a call or come by the office and speak with any of our Realtors; you might find we’ve been through a similar experience and can share some valuable insights.

WHY IS ISLAND LIVING SO EXPENSIVE? Visitors are often surprised by the higher prices for island goods and services relative to mainland expectations. In some cases, island prices run 50% higher than mainland equivalents. We’re not exactly on the edge of the world yet being as remote as we are does take its toll on prices. Consider that nearly all the goods consumed here must be brought over on the Washington State Ferry system, by private barge or by plane and it starts to make a little more sense. The island experience, be it here, Hawaii, the Caymans or anywhere, is just a little more costly.

IS IT HARD TO BE SO RELIANT ON THE FERRIES? Planning all your trips to the mainland around the ferries does take some thought, and we won’t lie and say we don’t complain. In fact, the San Juan Islands have the highest number of pilots per capita of any US county, and it’s gotta be because so many of us overreact to the ferry-driven economy. Still, dealing with the ferries really just requires a small amount of advance planning. Get your car in line with time to spare, bring a book or a pair of running shoes and enjoy the fantastic scenery. In our fast-paced modern world, it’s good to be forced to slow down from time to time, and that’s how we teach ourselves to love the trip. The constant crisis in ferry funding is a little different. The ferries are part of the Washington State Highway system. We need them to get around just like Seattle needs I-5 or Spokane needs I-90. Yet somehow ferry funding is treated a little differently than highway funding. Wouldn’t it be great if riding the ferry cost the same amount as a 60-minute drive down the freeway? Want to know about anything else? Please come visit us at the office . . . 50 Spring Street!

LOOK FOR THESE SIGNS . . . Jan Jameson and Jeanie Rouleau’s book entitled, YOU KNOW YOU’RE AN ISLANDER WHEN suggests a few key signs to look for when asking yourself if you’re an islander.

• You Invite 23 to a Party. . . 5 RSVP and 31 Show • Four Cars at a Stop Sign Constitutes a Traffic Jam • You Affectionately Call Your Island “ The Rock” • Best Part Of Any Trip Is The Ferry Ride Home

San Juan Islands

There are 172 named islands and reefs that make up the San Juan Archipelago; one a drive — to island attached to “Mainland America” by bridge, one offers its own ferry and four served by the Washington State Ferry System. Fidalgo Island, with the Anacortes waterfront, is the most populated of the San Juan Islands. It is truly the beginning of your adventures into the Salish Sea. Orcas Island, the famous “Emerald Island” is the largest of the San Juan Islands in land mass and it’s shaped like a horseshoe. Served by the state ferries, the terrain covers 57 square miles of rolling hills, lush mountains, densely wooded forests, pristine lakes, beautiful beaches, and green valleys dotted with sheep and deer. With 5,000 year-round residents, it’s known as “the gem of the San Juans.” Visitors soon realize there’s a beautiful view from nearly everywhere on Orcas Island! Beyond ferry serviced islands you are sure to discover worlds like no other.

Many islands are private

communities offering small stores, postal services, private airstrips and docks as well as homeowner associations and year-round caretakers. Life in the islands today is easier than it has ever been. See for yourself.
