Welcome back to another year, Ryme Intrinseca one that will be of great significance to our little county of Yetminster Dorset which often gets overlooked in the grand scheme of Out and About things. To be hosting the Sailing for the 2012 Olympics has to be a Diary - February onwards major feather in our cap. Lots of folk, both young and old, have volunteered to help, and be Regular Meeting & Activities ambassadors at, this prestigious event. Another celebration this year is our Queen’s General News Golden Jubilee and the Wriggle Valley, like the rest of the country, is organising events to enjoy St Andrew’s Primary School and memorials which will be there forever to remind us of this significant happening. News from our Churches Yetminster has designed a magnificent clock face for St Andrew’s Church as well as a number Benefice Church Services of fun activities over the weekend (see pages 34/35). Leigh Weather Watch Back to more mundane matters, every month we receive some super articles for the Planning Applications magazine which would be greatly enhanced by a photo or two, so please bear that in mind and Club News take your camera to your next meeting/event. Thank you to Ray Dickerson for his atmospheric cover photo of a wintry sunset in Hermitage. Keep them coming in. Please remember the new cut off date for your news and views is the 12th of the preceeding month in order for you to receive your magazine well before the beginning of the month. Thank you, in anticipation, to our distributors for delivering them earlier. Have a good month Bella Neate-Clegg

BATCOMBE..... What a mild winter it has been with roses in bloom on New Year’s Day; there is a old country saying " when the days do lengthen the cold do strengthen " - never mind spring is on its way. December has been a very busy month in the village with the Auction of Promises which was a great success and Derek was a great auctioneer. Our thanks to all who provided the promises and supplied the food, it was a very enjoyable evening which raised £1750 for Church funds. Well done everyone, The children’s carol service on Christmas Eve taken by Simon saw the church nearly full, many of the children read the lessons and many thanks to those who provided mulled punch, mince pies and sweets for the children. There was a collection for the Children’s Society. The Christmas Day service taken by the Brothers from the Friary and again the church was filled to capacity and the collection was for the Salvation Army.
Thanks to all the ladies who decorated the church, all the helpers who cleaned it and kept the churchyard so tidy during the year, The monthly Coffee Mornings held on the first Wednesday of each month at 11am will be 1 February at Andrew and Susie Graham’s, and 7 March with Chantel and Richard at Hilfield Friary. The next PCC meeting will be on 13 February at Flowers Farm and the AGM will be March 26 at Church Farmhouse. Alan Bastone
CHETNOLE..... with Melbury Bubb & Stockwood
I start this issue on another sad note for Chetnole. Mrs Jo Bennett of Chetnole passed away on Wednesday 11 January 2012 after a long illness. She had lived at her home 8, Lamb Plot since 1951 and we send our condolences to her children and family at this sad time.
More new residents for Chetnole in the shape of Piers and Lin Dupre at Longstone House who we hope will be very happy here. Sue Morgan reports that there has been a deafening silence in response to the idea of Chetnole setting up its own First Responders group. If this really is the general feeling she will not take the matter any further, but is mentioning it once more just in case you were away when the subject was first raised. Please 'phone Sue Morgan on 873104 for further details. wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 5

Chetnole Whist Drives Whist Drives are held throughout the year fortnightly on Wednesday evenings in the Village Hall. In order to run these successfully we rely on volunteers to collect fees from players & sell raffle tickets as they arrive at 7.30pm, and to return later in the evening make & serve tea. At present this task falls on helpers twice per year but with more volunteers on the Rota this obviously would lessen. So if you are able to help at any time during this coming year please ring Josie on 873571 Your assistance would be very much appreciated as the Whist Drives provide a valuable contribution to the Village Hall finances. 6

Winter 4x4 Rota Following the last few weeks of mist and murk and general dampness it appears that we are having an extended late autumn and that winter is just not happening for us. However, don’t be fooled – remember how all the snow last year took us all by surprise and caused a huge amount of inconvenience for all? Well, just in case the snow and ice do make a hasty return we in the village are now armed with a team of 4x4 drivers primed to help you if you need to be somewhere urgent/need medication collecting etc and the roads prevent you from getting out of the village.
Wednesday Coffee Morning. Funds raised in 2011 from the sale of Fearsome friends home made produce, bric- a- brac and books totalled £120. This will be donated to the 'Lord's Larder' Charity in Yeovil ( takings from coffee/tea , minus expenses, go towards the village hall). Many thanks to all those who have contributed to and supported this event. Dickens 200th/Olympics/Queen's Jubilee. the children in everything they did, often joining in; through his children he became interested in karting and boating. The years rolled by and in 1973 Paul left farming to set up Pen Mill Motor Mowers in Yeovil with his now son in law Les. His love of meeting people lead to the discovery that he was an excellent salesman and the business grew rapidly; soon he was joined in the business by Kathleen, Nick and Eileen. In the early 80s declining health caused Paul to retired from Pen Mill, but he was soon to find that retirement was to become busier than his working life, largely due to his grandchildren. He was a loving, caring and supportive Grandfather and like his father before him was known to all as Pop. The extended family had by now grown by eight grandchildren, Jody, Luke, Jess, Nat, Hayley, Ollie, Dan and Ellie and Paul and Kathleen were regularly found by the side of the swimming pool drinking lemon tea, watching their children, grand children and often many ‘extras’ from the village, splashing about. Paul was often seen walking or cycling through the village and always knew what was happening with everyone, offering a listening ear and a wise word where needed Sadly, Paul’s health further declined and he moved into the Old Vicarage where he spent four and a half happy years being cared for and loved by all. Paul’s funeral was held on 25 November and was taken by Rev Stephen Batty and was attended by a large number of villagers and was a good send off for ‘Mr Chetnole’ Gerald Potts would like to add that he loved Paul’s sense of humour and remembers him as Father Christmas giving presents to the Little Wrigglers toddler group’s annual Christmas party in the village hall. He also was pleased to help Paul cut the grass in St Peter’s churchyard and occasionally the cricket field. He enjoyed Paul as his “gaffer” and was proud to be his “lad”! The family would like to say a special thank you to everyone in the villages for their kind words and support during this time. Eileen Foy

Paul, alias Pop, was born at Chetnole Farm, the only child of Lydia and Percy Horsey. Throughout his long and active life, Paul went on to spend over 80 years living at Chetnole Farm, often sleeping in the same bedroom in which he had been born. He was a very precious child, the apple of his mother’s eye and living in a houseful of women, he was spoilt rotten!! This continued throughout his life and he was always a hit with the ladies. Paul was educated firstly at Pen Hill School in Yeovil, and later attended West Buckland School. When finishing school Paul came back to work on the farm. In the early 50’s Paul took a keen interest in a young lady called Kathleen, who happened to be the daughter of the dairyman, Harry; in the mid-50’s Paul and Kathleen were married in Chetnole Church. During the ensuing years Paul played an active role in the local community, he was very fond of the village discussion club in Leigh and local amateur dramatics; Paul was also an active member of the NFU and latterly became a parish councillor; he was a great supporter of the village church and followed in his dad’s footsteps, serving on the PCC for 57 years and welcomed all who came to the church. When he wasn’t riding his cherished 650 cc A10 BSA motorbike Paul was often found in the churchyard on his ride-on mower, cutting the grass and talking to passersby. The village cricket club also benefited from Paul’s knowledge and expertise in laying and maintaining the ‘hallowed’ square. His caring nature, patience and listening ears served not only his family, friends and villagers but anyone who had problems. He gave 27 years of service to the Samaritans in Yeovil serving as both a committee member and a leader during this period. Paul & Kathleen’s three children Lis, Eileen and Nick all have wonderful childhood memories, growing up at Chetnole Farm; they were privileged to have such good role models in their parents. Paul always encouraged and supported

Pre-Christmas Concert The Pre Christmas Concert in the Church can be counted a great success. All tickets sold, a more than full house, with extra chairs introduced in the aisles in order that the pews were not too crowded. The programme by the the Leweston Girls School Schola Cantorum and Musicians was certainly different and greatly appreciated by the audience. The ladies of the village turned up trumps again with vast quantities of mince pies and the mulled wine (courtesy of Nigel and Jill Bray). The wine being one of Jill's secret recipes was greatly enjoyed by all, including a significant number of the Cantorum!! On unlocking the church next morning, the warming aroma of mulled wine was still very much in evidence !!
Christmas Carol Singing On the evening of the Wednesday before Christmas a significant number of Chetnolians met at the Chetnole Inn before touring the village to sing carols. Musical accompaniment was by courtesy of Sarah Baker on recorder and one of our Swedish visitors Dag Linwicks on accordian, plus very professional carol sheets for all from Mary Prodger. Our three enthusiastic young door knockers (Andrew, Callum and Charis) collected the very healthy sum of £123.60 which is being shared between St Peter's Church Fabric Fund and Macmillan Cancer Care . At the conclusion I was kissed on both cheeks by a fair maiden, which made the whole affair very worthwhile! David Gough wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 13

Quiz for St Mary’s Church We are extremely grateful to Ray and Christine Dickerson who organized a very successful, if challenging quiz in aid of Hermitage Church in November. All the tables were taken and we were fortified in the interval with fish and chips. It was a very cheerful evening enjoyed by everyone, and we made some money too! Faith Hervey It was one of the most “testing” quizzes that I have set, and congratulations go to all the teams for their performance. Particular congratulations go to the ‘Three Gates 4” team on coming first; in joint 2nd place were ‘Milkmaze” (from Leigh) and ‘Just Thrown Together’ (Dave and Hazel Stevens and Dave and Denise Whiteoak) and in joint 3rd place were ‘3 J’s plus 1’ (from Yetminster) and ‘Steep Hill’ (Roger and Faith Hervey, Christine Richardson and Nadia Craton). This was our first attempt at running such an event, and what a good experience it was. So many lovely Christmassy things were on offer, many made by people in Hermitage and Hilfield and, although the numbers through the door were lower than we had hoped for, the morning was a definite success. Thank you to everyone who contributed to, and supported, this occasion. Profits from the Fair will be shared between the Village Hall and St Mary’s Church fund.

Xmas Bingo We had a good turn-out for the Bingo on December 3rd., with several younger players who were very welcome , as they brightened up our evening. The prizes were quite well distributed throughout the room as were the raffle prizes. A big thank you goes to Ann and Charlie for making the evening a success. Our next Bingo session will be in March – see below. Barbara Atyeo Carols by Candlelight Hermitage held its annual candlelit carol service on Christmas Eve in St Mary’s Church. It was a particularly lovely service with the Church beautifully decorated, and with a congregation larger than we have seen for years with Standing Room only. The singing was happy and loud and the high point was the beautiful solo and accompaniment of ‘Silent Night’ given by Emily and Josephine Mitchell. We are grateful to John Reynolds for taking the service and a thought provoking sermon. Faith Hervey

We had a lovely Christmas service which was held in our candlelit church. The lane leading up to the church gates was lit up and the double church doors were decorated with small lights. On entering the church it was a glow with candles and tea lights and a large Christmas tree was hung from the ceiling. Our little church was full to the brim; it was lovely to see so many people. A lovely reading was done by Isobel Vickery, thank you Isobel. The carol My Little Donkey was song beautifully by Mark and Emma's Children. A huge thank you to Mark and Emma for their hospitality, mulled wine and mince pies.
We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year but it now seems a long time ago. On walking up the lane by our house between Christmas and New Year primroses were spotted growing in the bank. I only hope they survive any future frosts. In the garden our rhubarb is six to eight inches out of the ground and in full leaf and two of our clematis shrubs are in full bud along with the honeysuckle, and to top it all we have a pair of blue tits busy making a nest in the box on the post in readiness for their brood. excellent meal and the presentation of trophies. Alan Bastone, the owner of Flowers Farm, Hilfield, was presented with a special trophy by Malcolm Maxted, chairman, on behalf of the members. The trophy
was to celebrate thirty five years since the opening of the fishery. Alan started the fishery in 1976 almost by mistake. The farm was short of water in this drought year and in order to collect water a lake was dug. When the lake filled from local springs Alan introduced some Rainbow trout as an experiment. The fish survived, four more lakes were dug and the rest is history. Flowers Farm is now a thriving trout fishery visited by fly fishers from all over the country. It is open all year round with day and season tickets available. Blair Sibun

Happy New Year to you all – I hope not too many of you succumbed to the Leigh Lurgy during the festive period; our perspective would suggest that more did succumb than did not? A great tonic to start the New Year was the award of the MBE to Phil Burton in the New Year’s Honours List, for masterminding our new Village Hall. He would be the first to say it was ‘A Village Effort’ which indeed it was – but someone had to lead the rabble! Many congrats Phil …and Sandy! Sadly the festive period saw the passing of two lovely ladies of Leigh, Marjorie Manning and Joan Steer. Raffles will never be the same! At the same time we warmly welcome Michael and Plaxy Arthur into half of Totnell House! We look forward to seeing them around. So as the sun sets in the West – The Reason Era cometh to an end! This is my last Intro. We shall miss it – but not completely as we will continue to deliver to our little patch of the LeighChetnole highway! Adieu – and as Dave Allen always said at the end of his show, “May your God go with you”. David Reason

First the exciting news that since the last magazine we have had two new babies in the village! First congratulations to Steve & Liz Chilton of 1 Lilac Cottages on the early arrival of baby Clara , who arrived on 22 November; she was soon home & busy gaining weight. Secondly congratulations to Christian & Jerry Stanley of Brockbury on an early arrival on 7 Jan of a son Henry a brother for Lucy also all safely home. Scrap Batten recently found a photo among his papers of the Ryme village school taken in the 1920’s when there were 60 children in the village!! One teacher & her assistant. Village Meeting This seems a long time ago now on 15 Nov. The state of the potholes outside Tim Roberts & also potholes and flooding at Elsford bridge on both the Dorset & Somerset sides was discussed. Cllr Lawrence is to look in to it. We now have three grit bins in the village. It is important that only a small amount is used at a time , approx a handful per square metre, think how thinly the gritter spreads it, definitely not for private use, no more will be supplied. Potential sites for gypsies in Dorset were discussed and Cllr Lawrence reported that it would not be Leigh, possibly Coles Lane on council owed land but more likely to be in Sherborne...
Jan Millward was keen to have a Jubilee project. Mr Perlejewki has suggested an Olympic celebration; all to be discussed at the next meeting which will be on Tuesday 20 March. The Carol & Christmas services were well attended, particularly the Christmas Day family service, which was standing room only. Thanks to Gloria Abbey for the delicious mince pies after the Carol Service. And also to all the people who put so much work in cleaning decorating, organising the service & performing on the day. Donations from these services went to East Africa Aid, Yeovil Night Shelter & Leukaemia Research. New Year Village Walk This was attended by about 27 people & quite a few dogs. A brisk walk across the farmland was followed by soup& sausages at Church Farm. ÂŁ110 was donated to Dogs For the Disabled. Telephone Box Library Daphne Blakey reported that it had been a great success, 300 books having been borrowed since June.

Development of land for a travellers’ site in Coles Lane, Yetminster On Thursday 12 Jan residents had the opportunity to meet representatives from the Planning consultants and the Council in St Andrews Church Hall and to view the outline proposals to provide a Gypsy and Traveller site on vacant, WDDC owned land at the end of Coles Lane. Certain problems exist due to potential contamination from the site’s previous use and with creating access as the land itself is higher than the roadway. No details were available as to the potential cost of remediation and access works but these are
likely to be considerable. An option is for the Council to sell the land to the travellers placing conditions on the site’s use in the planning permission process. No specific details of occupancy and numbers were given although the Consultant’s Suitability Appraisal document, available on the County Council’s web site, indicates that “the site could provide a small single pitch site for a Gypsy Traveller family”. It is the only identified site which is owned by the Council and which has very good access to most services

This is clearly an important issue for residents within the immediate area of Coles Lane and for the village as a whole and readers are urged to ensure that their views are known. Further details, together with two response forms are available on the Dorset County Council’s web site www.dorsetforyou.com/tra vellerpitches. These must be completed and returned by 10 February. Yetminster Fair News Treasurer’s Report for 2010 - 2011
Local Groups and Organisations were invited to submit applications for funding and the committee has agreed the following allocations:-
This year we were without the benefit of revenue from the evening concert and we were also unsuccessful in obtaining funding from the Parish Council to offset the cost of the Public Liability Insurance. Additionally we faced a shortfall in income from the Supper and Quiz nights and reduced revenue from the stall pitches. Notwithstanding these difficulties, and recognising the existing financial climate, it has still been possible to generate resources through local support to enable the Association to continue to help local projects. A continuing key financial strength in this is the income from the 50’s Club which provides a sound base to the fund.

Summary of COUNCIL MEETING 16 November 2011 The meeting was attended by eight councillors and eight members of the public Traveller Site Once again this matter was raised. Cllr Gould reiterated that the consultation document was still in draft form. It is due to be sent out for consultation shortly, at which point the Council and indeed individual residents could have their say. He pointed out that any comments must be ‘Objective’ as any ‘Subjective’ ones are likely to be thrown out. Subsequent to the meeting a consultation was arranged for 12 January 2012. The Post Office Cllr Gould said that the Post Office would remain closed for the time being whilst the Post Office authorities negotiated the lease with Mrs Merrit. He has been assured that Yetminster will retain a Post Office for the foreseeable future. In the meanwhile he and other councillors will run a shuttle to Thornford PO at 10am each Thursday. Speed Cameras We still await authority from Dorset Police to start this. Planning There were no contentious planning issues. 32
Development Grants The Council asked St Andrew’s PTA to submit a formal request for a grant towards the swimming pool restoration. The Grants Committee was asked to revisit its report on the larger development grant available in the future. Street Lighting Following a petition from residents the street lighting in St Sound’s Close and Stonyacres will be replaced on a one for one basis. Mr Drewett has agreed to assist the residents of Shearstones in drawing up a similar petition. Finance A precept of £9200 was agreed for 2012/13. High Speed Broadband Cllr Gould briefed on the Government plans to upgrade broadband to 25mps throughout the country by 2015. He said that businesses and residents with high use of the internet needed to state their requirement to Cllr Wills so that a strong case for upgrade can be made. Christmas Tree Once again Cllr Wills agreed to supply the Christmas Tree for the village. A Yetminster Project to Celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee When Queen Victoria reached her Diamond Jubilee in 1897 the village celebrated the event by fitting a chiming mechanism to the existing 1682 clock, which plays the National Anthem every three hours. The Jubilee Committee are looking for a suitable project which can be an everlasting tribute to our Queen who will have reigned for sixty years by next June, and who has given herself unstintingly in the service of this country since her coronation in 1952. One project which is being pursued, and which will complement the Victorian Jubilee memorial, is to install a clock dial on the East face of the Church tower which is linked to the existing clock. It is felt that this will be a fitting commemoration of the reign of our Queen who, with Victoria, is one of the two longest serving monarchs of this country. Two firms have been approached and both have submitted reports and estimates for completing the job. Pictures of the dial and how it would look when placed on the East face of the tower are shown below.

Before going ahead with this project the Jubilee Committee wish to know whether it has strong support in the village, and invite all resident members of Yetminster to sign a petition requesting the committee to proceed further with applications to the relevant Church bodies for their approval. Petition sheets may be found in the Oak House and Post Office Stores, the White Hart Inn and the Sports Club These have been available since the middle of January. All Yetminster Village residents are urged to sign the petition by 10th. February if they approve this project. By signing the petition residents are being invited to do no more than show their support for this way of honouring our Queen for her long service to the Nation and the Commonwealth. Any queries on this project may be addressed to John Strover on 01935 872437 Yetminster Jubilee Committee

Yetminster Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations Our plans for what we hope will be a enjoyable and whole village event are progressing and decisions taken. Permanent Memorial The Committee are very keen that there should be a permanent and fitting memorial to the Queen’s Jubilee in the village. It is after all a momentous event. To this end the fitting of a clock face to the Church Clock is being investigated. There is a separate article on this subject. If this project is not feasible some other worthy project will be commissioned. If anyone has an idea please let the committee know. Unfortunately, in view of the time scale, it is unlikely that any permanent memorial will be ready by June 2nd. However we will do our best. Celebrations The following is planned and in some cases booked. (NOTE there are some changes to the previous plan) Saturday 2nd All age Olympics and Hog Roast on School Playing Fields. Sunday 3rd 10:15 Thanksgiving Service in St Andrew’s Church. 1.00pm Street Party Lunch in High Street. Tables, Food, plates and cutlery will be provided free of charge. Bring your own drink and glasses. PM Entertainments yet to be decided 6.00pm Dancing (or not!) in the High Street to the Fat Marrow Band with Barbecue; again bring your own drinks. We are investigating the provision of a big screen so that people can watch the Thames River Pageant which also takes place that afternoon. Sunday 4th 8.00pm Barn Dance in St Andrew’s Hall. Dancing to O’Dalaigh’s Celli band, which
includes two former Yetties, Pete Shuttler and Mac McCulloch. Food and drink will be provided, but a decision as to whether this will be included in the price of the ticket has yet to be taken. Tickets (on sale later) will be £15 adult and £10 children. Maximum numbers 120. There will be a break so that the lighting of the Beacon on the Church Tower can be witnessed. This will take place at a preordained time between 10.00pm and 10.30pm. Memorabilia All children attending the Street Party will be given a Diamond Jubilee Mug. Commitment We hope that many of you will be prepared to commit to coming to the Street Party early and to this end we will be approaching all residents in early spring asking for that commitment and the payment of £2 per household. Street Decoration The High Street will be decorated with bunting and we hope many High Street residents will put out Red, White and Blue flowers either in pots or hanging baskets; even if it is only for the weekend. ‘Dress Code’ we hope that all those attending events and especially the street party will dress in some form of red, White and Blue. Help and Assistance The committee will need plenty of help to set this up either in the form of labour nearer the time or help with fund raising. If you are able to and would like to help in any way please let a member of the committee know. The more people are involved in the whole project the more fun it will be David Gould

BRADFORD ABBAS COUNTRY FAIR Saturday 16 June This year we are looking forward to staging yet another successful Country Fair as the main fundraiser for St Mary's Church and St Mary's School.
WOODLAND WEDNESDAYS
Over the years we have raised large amounts of money which have been used for improvements to both organisations. Because of the huge success of last years' bigger and better event we will be continuing with the Sports Club in the village as our venue featuring a Farmers Market, Craft Fair, Events Arena, Live Music stage and lots lots more. This year we aim for bigger crowds and revenue for the Church, School and other local organisations. We are looking for STALLHOLDERS, particularly for the Farmers Market, so if you make or grow anything from cakes to carrots then give us a call! If you are part of a local group, society or charity with strong Bradford Abbas ties we would be willing to offer a table for your organisation free of charge in return for donating a volunteer to the fair committee to help set up or help man the event on the day. All enquiries to Nicola Hayward on 01935 411434.

General News St. Andrew’s Primary School is lucky enough to have had the opportunity to study and handle some real pieces of moon rock and lunar dust this week. These amazing pieces were collected during NASA’s manned space missions to the Moon in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The samples were delivered to the school by a special NASA envoy and are kept under tight security at all times. The UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council provide schools around the country with these materials together with a display of information on meteorites and other space rock as part of a science educational package. Katrina Halford, the Science & Technology teacher at St. Andrew’s School, commented “We are absolutely delighted to be able to offer our students such a unique and exciting opportunity to actually handle something which provides an insight into the bigger environment surrounding us. We have recently taken a trip to the Science Museum in London and our students are excited to build on that knowledge in more depth. Most children view the Moon as something that is at the edge of their understanding and now we can truly give it to them to hold, they are so excited”. For more information, please contact St. Andrew’s Primary School on 01935 872430 or visit our website www.standrewsyetminster.org.uk to view more pictures. Rosie Cunningham, Governor

News from the Wriggle Valley Singers and Folk South West In November Folk South West hosted a Loud and Clear singing day of traditional carols in St Andrews Church Leigh. We had a great day and it was decided that we should carry on meeting, which we did. On 10 December the newly created Wriggle Valley Singers shared a concert with Stanchester Quire in Leigh Village Hall, where they joined the Quire for some carols but also did two spots of their own. They were enormous and received well-deserved thunderous applause! Flushed with success we continued to meet and on 19 December we went carol singing around Leigh, singing the old carols as they would have been sung over 150 years ago. We concentrated on the area from The Cross to South Street so we are sorry if you missed out this year but we do hope to do it again next year when we will focus on a different part of the village. The singing was excellent and it was a lovely Christmassy occasion. We collected £110, which is divided equally between Shelter and Folk South West. Thank you so much to all who sang, listened and gave so generously, it is all much appreciated. Special thanks to Caroline and Pam Birdsell for the fabulous mince pies and mulled wine at the end, it was just perfect! And so to the future – The Wriggle Valley Singers would like to carry on meeting and singing and we hope to fit in at least four sessions between now and Easter. Please get in touch if you would be interested in joining us. Folk South West on the move – In June our landlord would like to have his house back. Completely understandable from his point of view but just a bit sad for us as we 44
have loved our time at Church Farm. We are keen to stay in the village and the plan at the moment is that we will move to Church Farm Cottages. As this is slightly smaller some of our stuff will go into store but we are searching for anyone who has a spare room that we could use to store our accumulation of costumes. We use these on various occasions during the year when we are singing at Medieval, Victorian and Edwardian events. It is quite important that they are accessible, dry and away from too many mice! Please do let us know if you think you might be able to help. Philippa Toulson philippa@folksw.org.uk

Your Preschool needs
OON your support
You may or may not be aware of the troubles the St Andrews Wriggle Valley Preschool has faced over the last couple of years, and more importantly, in the last weeks. The Preschool was very proud to have celebrated its 40th year in 2011 but, as parents, we had no idea of the financial struggle with which the School’s Governors found themselves until the beginning of December 2011. The governors were forced to issue a letter to the parents informing them that come January the Preschool would be suspended because it was running at a significant deficit which the school could no longer sustain. It also stated that the Preschool staff had accepted voluntary redundancy and the future of the provision would be discussed at the meeting with the governing body in February 2012. The majority of the children attending the Preschool are aged 4 yrs + and thus in their final year at Preschool, before making the huge jump to Reception in St Andrew’s CE Primary School, Acorn Class. Many parents specifically chose St Andrews Wriggle Valley Preschool because of the liaison and integration with the main school and thus weren’t going to take things lying down!! A committee has now
been formed called The Wriggle Valley Parents Group with elected officers and an adopted constitution. It is fully committed to the continuation of the Preschool for another 40 years!!! The Preschool will operate with volunteer staff for the first term with the view to employing permanent staff from February 2012. The committee has worked very closely with the governors and Paul Miller, Headteacher, to ensure that the Preschool remains Ofsted registered and can continue to offer the excellent standards it always has done and most importantly remain legal!! The final piece in our jigsaw puzzle, the CRB checks, have been returned and the Preshcool reopened its doors as St Andrew’s Preschool on Monday 9 January . The 'ownership' of the Preschool has been transferred back to the parents and it will be operated by the parents group as it was many years ago. Well aware of the previous issues the Preschool faced, the officers of the new committee are experienced in their fields and the pool of knowledge is vast to ensure that any hurdles can be overcome!! The parents have managed to save the Preschool for the time being but the continuing support of the surrounding communities is needed for its survival!! I hope that the local community will also continue to support the Preschool fundraising activities, as you did for the well attended Race Night, by joining us in forthcoming events, such as the classical concert (see page 43) and other activities held by the Preschool; we will ensure that every demographic is catered for!! The Preschool will be relaunched in February.

The Old Vicarage Care Home goes to London For the third time, The Old Vicarage has been recognised as an outstanding business with the Great British Care Awards, earning a place this year at the finals of the Great South West Care Awards 2011, to be held in London this May. After impressing the judges at the interview stage of the competition with their passion for the job and for the individual care of residents and staff alike, Annie Sinnott and Sue Ford were winners, being invited to attend the national finals for the care home sector, which will take place this May in London. Both attended a wonderful evening, held at The Passenger Shed, Brunel’s Old Station, Bristol, on Friday 4 November. The gala included a champagne reception and gourmet meal, as well as the presentation of the awards for the nineteen category winners, presented by Keith Chegwin, in which Annie and Sue accepted the awards for Care Employer and Care Home Worker. All of us at The Old Vicarage, as well as the local community, are very happy and proud of these thoroughly well-deserved achievements, and wish Annie and Sue all the best in this year’s finals.

News from the Friary Over the past few years Hilfield Friary, Batcombe, below the edge of the Dorset Downs, has developed as a mixed community of Franciscan brothers and lay members, both men and women. Although the night shelter for ‘wayfarers’ closed in 2004 we continue to offer hospitality to many guests, including those with particular need of rest, refuge and refreshment. At the heart oaf our life is the rhythm of daily prayer and worship. A particular focus for us as Franciscans is working for peace – with each other, amongst Christians and people of other world faiths, and living peaceably with the environment. There’s an exciting conservation programme on our land and we run a range of courses and retreats which share something of St Francis’ peaceful wisdom for the world today. You can read more about Hilfield on our website: www.hilfieldfriary.org.uk
As the work of the Friary is expanding we are looking for local volunteers – people who are interested in our Franciscan ethos and the kind of work that we are doing, and who would be willing to give some time each week or fortnight to assist in staffing our office, welcoming guests, helping with our Friary shop, or sharing in any of the regular and essential community tasks: cleaning, cooking, gardening etc. We regard those who help us as part of the community for the time that they are at the Friary, and we invite them to share in our meals and our meetings. If you would like to experience something of Franciscan community life in this way please get in touch us. Sara Whistance, PA to Br Samuel SSF 01300 34231. samspassf@franciscans.org.uk

G
entle Reader, Some of you may have heard already that John and I have retired and have made the momentous decision to sell Moreys after 20 happy years and return to Orkney. Having notified many of our friends (and former pupils) up there, we discovered that there is a dearth of Ministers and that I could have a full – time job preaching if I wanted, but being officially retired one can always say “No”! We’ve come to the
conclusion that the Lord wants us to be useful while we are still sufficiently fit and able. Consequently this will be my last contribution to the Wriggle Valley Magazine. I used the meditation below by a Sister of Carmel at a funeral last year and it summarises beautifully how I feel. Thank you all for your fellowship and neighbourliness. We shall miss you all, but hope to visit when time permits. God bless you all. Jo Jones Sherborne & Yeovil Methodist Circuit
Uttered Through a Reed Outside the city in a marsh near a river grew a reed. She had lived in the green and yellow marsh all her life, and she was happy. When it rained, the young reed thanked God; she felt clean on the outside and on the inside. Within her, life surged and she grew strong. When the sun beat on the marsh, she thanked God too (but not as loudly as before). She knew that although it scorched her outside and hurt her inside, her roots were digging into rich black soil, but most of her days were like yours and mine – Sunny, overcast, windy, or drizzly. One day (I’m not sure of the date), the Son of God walked through the marsh.
54
He liked it out there at times, away from the whirlpool city. He saw the speckled reed and stopped to look at her. It wasn’t that she was particularly beautiful, but the Son of God needed a reed to pipe on and, with a little fixing up, she would do. He studied the reed and finally said: “Little reed, I need a pipe to play a melody. Would you let me pluck you by the roots? I can fix for my purpose and that may hurt, but I wish to sing a song of love through you” The little reed could hardly believe her ears; she could hardly believe what was happening to her or what the Son of God was saying to her.
Finally, she strangely enough said, with no hesitation: “Yes, yes, let it be done” And as the Son of God pulled up the reed by the roots (and it did hurt), she lay in his hand and didn’t mind. Even when he took his knife and cut away her throbbing roots, she just cried: “Yes, yes, let it be done” The Son of God whittled her to fit his palm and emptied the clutter in her heart. And when she was hollow, virgin empty, the Son of God kissed her with his lips and uttered through her a beautiful song of Love. A Sister of Carmel

This year’s costumes surpassed any we’d seen before - thanks to Gill Clarke. The wolf, Lupus (Harvey Robotham) was dressed to impress - but I’d be surprised if a few members of the audience weren’t plagued with nightmares after watching his antics. Fortunately Neela Brooking, radiant as The Woodland Fairy was there to calm our nerves.
Newcomers to panto, Amy Curtis and Max Harding took on the parts of Bo Peep and Boy Blue with great prowess. They were ably supported by some of the more regular teenagers as well as members of the The Dance Academy. Choreography by Amanda Myall gave us another dimension with some superb performances by many members of the cast. Jan Witt as musical director ensured that we were entertained with high quality sound to complement the acting and dancing. With splendid comic timing and a great chemistry, Pippa Scott and Daphne Barfoot as Hustle and Bustle brought the comic relief, providing a foil to the evil Jasper de Vyle (John House). Congratulations to Director, Kirsty Andrews for bringing this delightful performance to life. No mean feat when we consider that her third child was due the day after the final performance! Thanks go out to all those who supported the production behind the scenes. Sylvie Lord

Tuesday Club Our first meeting of 2012 proved to be most instructive and helpful. Two members of the Dorset Fire Service, Dave and John came to tell us all about the dangers of fire and how to avoid one in our own homes. They started off by showing us a short film of a fire started by a smouldering cigarette left on an easy chair. In real time it showed us that from the first sign of flame to a completely burnt out room took just 31/2minutes. The first and most essential precaution to take is the fitting of efficient modern smoke alarms. I was not the only person, with the old type, guilty of taking the batteries out because they proved over sensitive. The modern ones are much less over sensitive and the batteries cannot be removed. Moreover if they are fitted by the fire service they will ensure that they are positioned where they should not go off at
the least whiff of well done toast. In 2008 there were 12 house fire deaths in Dorset, only three had working smoke detectors. We were also told in case of a fire not to jump out of a window but, having first phoned the fire brigade, to close the room door and stop any smoke coming in with a blanket or rug at the bottom of the door and open all windows for air. The closed door would keep the fire out for 25 minutes by which time the fire service would be with us. They then took the names and details of anyone who would like a free visit and free detectors fitted; and I think Leigh residents will have given them enough work for the rest of the year. We then had a brief A.G.M. Subscriptions remain at £5 a year- a sum more than recouped at our first meeting! Sylvia Bryan

Chetnole & Leigh Garden Club At the first meeting of 2012 members enjoyed a talk on seed sowing and propagation from Mike Burks of The Gardens Group. He talked informatively and entertainingly on the topic, touching on the fact that seeds can range in size from the microscopic begonia semperflorens (so tiny that it is said to be more expensive, weight for weight, than gold) to the coconut. With the recent revival of interest in ‘grow your own’, seed sales are now increasing and we were shown examples of the different ways that manufacturers market and present their seeds. Mike then gave a real ‘hands on’ demonstration, showing how to mix seed and cutting compost with an equal quantity of perlite for the ideal sowing medium and how to sow seeds to obtain even coverage, (first in one direction and then at right
angles). Another tip: when watering, use room temperature water and start and finish sprinkling outside the seed tray. This avoids large drops falling on the seeds and disturbing them. We were told how pricking out the germinated seedlings as soon as they can be handled will encourage good growth and avoid leggy plants. Most importantly, Beautiful always follow the instructions on the back herbaceous of the seed packet. All this borders useful information, plus brief advice on various methods of propagation, was delivered in Mike’s usual light-hearted and amusing style. The prize for the best indoor flowering plant was won by Christine Dickerson with her African Violet. At the next meeting on 6 February Chris Ireland-Jones of Avon Bulbs will be speaking on ‘Extraordinary Bulbs’. Janet Wood

Wriggle Valley Women's Group. The title of our November talk was a down-to-earth one – just Storytelling - but in the hands of Linda Carroll, 'down-toearth' was the last thing it proved to be, and we were treated to an evening as thought-provoking as it was entertaining! Linda's knowledge of the art of telling stories - as well as the stories themselves is vast, and beginning with a parable, that had an ironic twist in its tail (excuse pun!), she went on to talk about the origins of storytelling itself, how, as soon as people developed speech they began to tell stories – to instruct, to try to explain the inexplicable, but most of all, perhaps, simply to entertain – or, in the case of ghost stories - to enjoy making their listeners glance nervously behind them and move closer to the fire! For centuries the same, or very similar stories, have turned up regularly all over the world, sometimes because they have been spread by travellers, but more often because the original tellers all just happened to have had the same idea! Such stories can be short and straightforward, long and involved, practical or magical. Their endings can be happy, unhappy or even equivocal, but they all carry some sort of a moral or lesson that the listener would be wise to heed; Linda gave us a plenty of fascinating examples, the most intriguing of all being the Armenian story of a wife, her husband and a mysterious locked chest... As she had been a teacher, Linda also read extracts from one of Gervase Phinn's books recounting his experiences as a teacher and later a school inspector. Some were sad, some extremely funny, but all were enlightening, and we agreed with her (and Gervase Phinn) that if children are given the chance to enjoy 68
'story-time', at home as well as at school, it can open the door to so many things – not least the power to use their imaginations. The meeting went on much longer than usual because, as well as answering questions on a subject as old as it is fascinating and still able to cast its spell over adults and children alike, Linda was also asked to tell us ' just one more story' before we went home! Dorothy Baldock The next WVWG Meeting is on Tuesday, 21 February - 7.30pm. in Leigh Village Hall when Mrs. Eustace will guide us through 300 Years of Music. It is an Open Meetings, so guests – men as well as women – are most welcome. Yetminster & Ryme Garden, Art and Craft Society For anyone with a leaning to exotica and decadence in the garden, Geoffrey Northcote’s talk on the World of the Tropical Garden at the January meeting gave us some good ideas should we wish to create our own botanical paradise. After running through the history of botanic gardens in the UK and around the world, he shared with us a trip he had taken to Bali some years ago to see how the temples, pavilions and palaces of the past were embellished with exuberant and spiritual planting. Palms, ferns, hibiscus, bourganvillea, frangipani, fig and flame trees plus all manner of uncatchable names were there in abundance, creating an impressive and in some places, impenetrable jungle of foliage and flowers. Those with a penchant for drifting off to sleep during a slide show may have missed the more unusual decorative features; topless Bali beauties wafting enigmatically through dramatic foliage certainly created a noticeable stir among the others! If seeing is believing, you too could have this effect in your garden! We then moved on to see how botanical gardens have changed with the move to more contemporary planting. The careful mix of vibrant colours, harmony and layers of different greens combined with the more thoughtful application of the traditional concepts of space, abundance and stillness were used to amazing effect. Reference was made several times to Will Giles, who has created a very good botanical garden in Norwich, which
demonstrates that you can create tropical effects anywhere in the world. I think his web site is worth a visit if you are interested in creating something similar. The evening was brought to a close by a concise and witty vote of thanks from John Parfitt, and grateful applause! Diamond Jubilee As you know, arrangements are underway for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Yetminster. It is hoped the whole village will join in, not just in participating, but also in the preparation. We would like to take this opportunity to put out an early rallying call to all the green-fingered members of the village. We will be looking for red, white and blue flowers to decorate hanging baskets in the High Street, so if you can help with this, now is probably the time to start planning. A sub-committee to manage the flowers will be in operation and in contact soon. Other dates The next Society meeting will be on 14 February, when we have a speaker on Gardening Folklore from Castle Gardens. The discount buying evening, as last year, is in March. We mentioned at the end of last year that we are planning an Open Garden event for Yetminster later in June. Bearing in mind the activities surrounding the Jubilee, we were probably being a little ambitious with this date, and besides, all the flowers, at least from my garden, will probably be hanging in baskets up and down the High Street. So we will announce a later date in due course. As they say in Bali: Hari-Hari bahagia! Pandy Brown wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 71
Leigh Discussion Group We commence with our annual Christmas Meal which this year was held on the 18 November in the Folke Golf Club. They did us proud with a most enjoyable meal. 54 persons attended - we had our usual raffle which realised £100 plus our annual hands on your head or your bum ably organised as usual by Paul Smith – this made £54 for a selected charity. The evening was finished off with a few jokes mainly at the expense of our Chairman Charlie Osmond great evening all round! We move on then to our meeting on the 6 December when we had a social evening where we get competitive with the best old photos; this time on farming. Also cakes baked to a set recipe with the recipe this year being provided by the late and sadly much missed Marge Samways. Marge was a great cook and a regular winner in these competitions. Our guest judges for the evening were Alan and Ann Osmond, after much deliberation the winners were Cakes – 1st Valerie Buckland with runners up Norman Buckland and Eileen Dare.
Cheese Straws – 1st Sheila Smith and runners up Brenda Evans and Eileen Dare. Photographs - 1st, 2nd and 3rd Brian Read. The evening was finished off with a game of Bingo run by Charlie and ably assisted by his wife Ann. Finally, we report on our meeting of 3 January 2012 when our guest speaker was Mrs Peet. Her subject was Tudor Britain (No Knickers)! Well, I have to say what an interesting talk - she held everybody's attention from first to last with explicit details of real life in Tudor times, from differences between rich and poor, having babies, what they wore and various health remedies which beggared belief - but all facts of a time that was never in our history books. We shall invite Mrs Peet again. Chetnole Chuckers Boules Club
Boxing Day Boules
This year the Chuckers’ Christmas Dinner was held at the Yeovil Golf Club, a new venue for the Boules Club. Although a few were not able to attend, a gathering of about 24 members enjoyed an excellent evening meal in very pleasant surroundings. John Head, acting as Chairman for the occasion, summarised the season’s activities and presented the trophies for the Club Competitions held earlier in the year. With so many contributions of gifts for the
raffle, it seemed almost everybody came away with a prize! The Boxing Day Boules was well attended. About 30 participants, including friends, children and grandchildren, turned up at the boules terrain for morning sausage rolls, mince pies and mulled wine. It was a fun occasion and unlike last year year, which was cancelled because of the snow, the weather was mild enough for a few games of boules, with all three pistes occupied for a couple of hours. We now look forward to the 2012 Boules season. Ian Wood wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 73
