EDITOR’S MUSINGS… Our double issue welcomes you to a summer of We have shows galore and Summer balls, food extravaganzas and flower festivals - too many to list here.(p 32) If you have a youngster going off to Uni or starting an apprenticeship, remember to apply for a grant. This was set up a few hundred years ago by scientist Robert Boyle, who resided in Yetminster, to support our young people as they start out on the next stage of their lives. However, they do need to live in the three villages of Yetminster, Leigh & Chetnole, see p 47. Whilst we are on the subject of the Boyle’s Education Trust, they are looking to re-let the business premises which was Georgies Hair Salon next to the Gallery in Yetminster. So if you know anyone who might be interested in this prime business location have a look at their advert on p 47. The November edition is our 300 magazines, full of interesting articles and events, delivered to your door by our stalwart village distributors, in all weathers, (thank you). To celebrate, we would like to create a special edition with your Wriggle Valley anecdotes of the last 30 years. If you have a story you would like to share, send it in and mark it with “ ”. Enjoy the next couple of months - let them be lovely - and we will be back on your doorstep in September; articles in by 12th August please. Thank you to those who have been sending event photos in already - it is much appreciated. Have a splendid summer.

e begin by sending our very best get well soon wishes to our very own Gordon Ratcliffe who has been poorly recently and we hope that you are now on the mend. Hope you're all enjoying high summer in Chetnole and our area - July and August have a selection of fun-filled events for your enjoyment ranging from charity coffee mornings to the big one itself, CHETNOLE FETE AND FLOWER SHOW, interspersed with a world music concert at the village hall, a SUMMER LUNCHEON for Melbury Bubb church and a cricket match to boot. See our section plus the diary for details of all these events and go out and have fun. Have a great summer and see you in September
V W M Janet and Gordon Ratcliffe wish to thank everyone who sent cards and offers of help during and after Gordon's unexpected stay in Dorchester Hospital at the end of May. Your support is greatly appreciated. PS: the fast response and treatment from the NHS was bloody marvellous too! wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk
Are you ready for the CHETNOLE FETE AND FLOWER SHOW on Saturday 5th August? This will be the 70th Flower Show, so we are hoping for a bumper crop of entries. Have you planted Swiss chard this year? Can you enter a dish of soft fruit? Or five penstemon in a vase? And what about those cooking skills, do they need honing? Three florentines is the Challenge. The flower arranging class reflects our anniversary and asks for an arrangement for ‘70TH CHETNOLE FLOWER SHOW’ so get your thinking caps on. As always, the sun will shine between 2 and 4:30pm, so make sure you come and add to the atmosphere!
SPONSORSHIP FOR THE CHETNOLE FETE AND FLOWER SHOW 2017 The Committee are delighted to announce that the owners of DOCKSIDE PERSONNEL, Richard and Nicola Quaresma, have offered to sponsor the hiring of the marquee for the Chetnole Fete and Flower Show. Richard and Nicola have only recently moved to Chetnole with their two children, so it is wonderful that their company has so generously provided funds to cover the cost. This of course means that more of the money raised on the day can go towards local charities and organisations. We thank them for their very kind and unexpected contribution. Dockside Personnel is a ‘one stop shop’ for the supply of both temporary and permanent staffing solutions. They cover a range of employment sectors, from cleaning to construction, hospitality to retail and more. Jackie Boulter

A SPECIAL TREAT! On Saturday 15th July, at Chetnole Village Hall, you will have the opportunity to hear something very special! Sekou Keita – arguably the most influential and inspiring kora player of his generation will be giving one of his only two concerts in this part of the world this year. The kora is a 22 stringed West African harp and Sekou (who hails from Senegal) is an exceptional musician and a true master of this instrument. Since he graced the international stage in 1996 he has earned world-wide acclaim. His performances in this country include Glastonbury Festival and at the Royal Festival Hall. In his latest album – “22 Strings” – Sekou shows what a wondrous instrument the kora is – one that can soothe the bloodlust of warriors and take the human spirit to a place of deep meditation, stillness and beauty. “An absolutely magical sound” – Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2. Please don’t miss it! Tickets - £12 obtainable from: John Head - 01935 873555 or Janet Wood 01935 873022
CHETNOLE VILLAGE HALL SUMMER BARBECUE The evening could have been a washout, but the almost 70 attendees, plus organisers and helpers, had a thoroughly good time despite the weather. Most of us managed to stay dry, with only two unfortunate individuals receiving a drenching from the gazebo roof 'water feature'! The indomitable team of chefs did a superb job in the adverse conditions, producing perfectly cooked burgers and sausages to be enjoyed with the delicious side dishes, followed by luscious desserts. Special thanks to 'Word Gets Out' for providing a great musical performance which got so many of us up and dancing under the disco lights. The evening raised almost £750 for the Village Hall. oin us in July for AN EVENING WITH JOHNNY KINGDOM. WILDLIFE PRESENTER, FILM MAKER & PHOTOGRAPHER Saturday 8th July 2017. Johnny hasn’t always been the wildlife photographer, film maker and presenter that most people know him as. All this came about because of a serious accident that changed his life. Before this he was a farmer, quarryman, forestry worker, gravedigger and, if truth be told, a poacher. How things have changed, but those days certainly left him with some stories to tell. He still lives in North Devon, as he has done since the day he was born. He loves it here surrounded by the beautiful moor with all its stunning wildlife and family and friends . What more could a man want?

s a continuation from last month’s introductory article we continue the walking theme: If you wander in the early evening up to the Miz-Maze field there appears on the skyline the penciled shape of a shallow ridge, so faint that it seems to disappear as you approach, like a mirage. A bird’s eye view of this shape would appear hexagonal: a raised six-sided earth work as in the aerial view and the historian’s sketch in Barbara Boswell’s book on Leigh. The pattern is like a long coiled rope with only one path leading to the centre and with no false turns or dead ends. A true labyrinth follows the classical pattern found on ancient coins from the legendary Cretan palace of Knossos. As we are not Cretans, however, what might have been the purpose of our British labyrinths? It seems that ‘walking
All that’s left of Leigh’s Miz Maze a maze’ was a game in Roman times; crawling along it was used as a penance, and that religious or seasonal celebrations or games took place there. Shakespeare in the 17th century certainly knew about mazes. In the 18th century young men from Leigh village re-cut the paths and repaired the earthwork, but by 1868 our maze was overgrown. Barbara’s wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk
book says it was last used for a bonfire in 1902 to celebrate the coronation of Edward VII. Today there is renewed fascination with the symbolism of mazes. Wessex Labyrinth Walks, using a life-size classic coiling maze, re-creates a maze walk, a journey which reflects our meandering route through life. The heart of the labyrinth is ‘place for prayer and meditation; a place for listening and waiting’. Of the eight turf mazes surviving in Britain, only three are named ‘miz-maze’, meaning a whirl, a confusion or a mystification. A mizzle is a drizzle of rain, or something which disappears suddenly - like a mirage! Has anyone any ideas about how our maze might have been used? Was there a witches’ corner there? The fascinating maze-mystery remains.

We are thrilled to announce that on 3rd July we are having a special performance by world renowned opera singers as part of a national project to promote outstanding activity provision in Care Homes. Evans Tonon (one of the Italian three tenors), Augusto Valenca and Francesca Lanza will once again be performing for us. We feel very honoured and privileged to welcome them back. They are remarkable performers with incredible talent.
Louise and Becky manned a stall at the Sherborne Castle Fair recently and were pleased to chat to so many friends of the Old Vicarage and also provide an insight into life at our very special Care Home. The Old Vicarage once again sponsored the food tent and the crowds were not put off by the wet weather. We are constantly evolving our activity programme and we are now offering gentle yoga classes for our residents. (In between Maypole dancing, visiting miniature ponies and harp playing)! We were delighted that members of St Andrew’s church joined us on Rogation Sunday to conclude their service and have a welcome cup of tea! We very much value our close links with the local community and
we are very thankful to so many who help out as volunteers. Our next event is the CHARITY DOG SHOW on Sunday 23rd July. Everyone is very welcome, with or without a dog! It is worth a visit for the cream teas! Other dates for your diary: • Wednesday 27th September. nother fabulous turn out from Ryme for the Annual Churchyard Tidy up on 13th June; what a lot of power tools but what a result! The very overgrown hedge on the west boundary is now half the size and hopefully it is now under control for the next few years. Work seemed to go into overdrive after the coffee break when we were powered by the most delicious date slices kindly dropped off in the porch even though she couldn’t be there herself by Sue Goldsworthy, they were really special. Thank you so much to everybody from Mike and I as Churchwardens, not forgetting Dominic Smith who, because he couldn’t come on the day, did sterling work another afternoon clearing the side of the road all along the church wall. So goes the old adage. May might not be out for some time yet ; so, with the weather improving, get clout casting unless you want to be very hot and sticky. But not too many clouts – Yetminster is not that sort of place! So what’s to do this warm, reducedclout summer? The YETMINSTER FAIR 8th July is a must do. Judging from the programme it looks like being a very lively a-ffair . The following week (15th July) Liz Clothier is throwing open her garden and offering tea/coffee and cake. A beautiful garden and, on past form, the cakes will be delicious. All for St. Andrew’s Church. Well worth supporting. 19th August sees the SUMMER SHOW in the Jubilee Hall. All those prize vegetables

and fruits, the cakes and jams and bread, the photos and paintings and needlework. A veritable feast for the eyes. And the gossip – who’s won what, and was it fair? On the broader Y front, we have a new Chair of the Parish Council: Geoff Goater. An ex-civil engineer and resident of four years, he has been very active in the SAS (St. Andrew’s Singers) and church fundraising. He is also a Morris dancer and clog dancer which should make him uniquely qualified to keep the council in order. We congratulate Geoff on the appointment and wish him the best in this demanding task. The Neighbourhood Plan is progressing. It’s a bit like pre-election purdah at the moment. Lots going on in the background – reports being written on housing, transport, business, the environment. But still in the draft stage and not quite ready for publication. Look out for a questionnaire which is planned to be distributed shortly. It is vital that the whole community has its say. Don’t just leave it to a few “enthusiasts” to make the running. When it comes through your door, take the time to fill it in and let the NP Steering Group know what you think. You be listened to. On the buses: to cover the withdrawal of the public services there are potential approaches that could involve the use of minibuses from local taxi firms. It might be possible to run a twice or thrice weekly service to and from Sherborne from Yetminster, Chetnole and Leigh. It will require a person or persons to organise and co-ordinate bookings. If you are dependent on buses or have an interest it keeping a service going contact Wriggle Valley Transport Group via wvtbus@gmail.com or 01935 873979. At the personal level, we have condolences to wish Michael Windridge and his family for the loss of Nora. Also a correction to make from last month: the printer’s devil got into the works somewhere. So, congratulations to Pat and Jenny on their recent marriage, not Pat and John, as published last month. All happiness to you both.

CHAIRMAN’S BLOG Yetminster and Ryme Intrinseca Parish Council Evening All! Well, if anyone had told me when I was little that one day I would be a Chairman of the Parish Council I don’t think I would have believed them, but here we are. As I write this, I’ve been in the job for three weeks and it feels a bit like being thrown into the deep end. However, onwards and upwards. I think we owe a great debt of gratitude to the previous Chairman, David Gould, who has steered the village for the last nine years
through some fairly difficult times and we all hope that he and Penny enjoy a well-earned ‘retirement’. Christine and I have only been in the village for just about four years and really love Yetminster – we came from Cambridgeshire which though lovely, didn’t have the rolling hills and the warmth of Dorset folk, or the wonderful characters who live in and around. There’s so much to do in the village and I hope over the next few years that we can promote (cont’d on next page) (CHAIRMAN’S BLOG cont’d) and expand the facilities to keep the

HIGHWAY VERGES AND BIODIVERSITY A little while ago the Parish Council were led to believe that Parish Councils would have to take on responsibility for road verge management in their parishes. We now understand that this is not the case and that maintenance of the verges will remain with the Coast & Countryside Service. However, new approaches to verge maintenance are being trialled through reduction in fertility of verge soils which will lead to an increase in their biodiversity. The aim is to reduce substantially the cost of managing the verges while at the same time maintaining high standards to allow safe passage along the highway, and to look after the wildlife and landscape values of the roadsides that contribute so much to the character of the Dorset countryside. The intention is that, in an identified area, the existing grass is removed and wildflower seeds sown which, once established, produce colourful shows of flowers for most of the summer and
autumn. These areas are also a source of nectar for insects, and the County Council has recently adopted an Action Plan for Pollinators to encourage this approach (https://www.dorsetforyou.gov.uk/pollinat ors). This initiative is welcomed by the Dorset Wildlife Trust and it has been suggested by the Coast & Countryside Service that we may like to consider undertaking some form of conservation management of our own verges. This could include getting the community involved in identifying verges that might be suitable, raking up after the verges have been cut and sowing wild flower seeds etc. In order that we may consider whether we would want to change some of the verges within the Parish we would be grateful if you could give us your views by using the contact form on the Parish Website. village vibrant. Fairly soon we will have the start of 87 new homes at Folly Farm, the chances are that this may take a good few years to complete as it will probably be built in several phases, but on a positive note, this will give us more time to welcome the newcomers gradually into the village. July already. The year is going at its usual breakneck speed. This is the month the children break up from school - holidays gardens go wild – barbecues – last year’s embarrassing summer clothes and the YETMINSTER FAIR on 8th July. I hope everyone
will support the Fair, it’s a lot of hard work for Barbara and her small band of helpers. All the money raised goes to local groups, last year £1250 was distributed - pretty magnificent for a small village. This year is looking wonderful with some new events. The White Hart will be open all day and there will be music there in the evening, cream teas in the Jubilee Hall and Brian is organising what looks to be a brilliant model exhibition also in the Jubilee Hall and Val Singleton will be there to open it and do a Storytime. Do come along and support it. Geoff Goater wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk
SYRIAN REFUGEES IN YETMINSTER Dorset C.C. has responded to the National Programme ending in 2020 by settling two Syrian refugee families in the County and expect to expand its own programme in Dorset by resettling around twelve families per year. In response to that programme the Sherborne Area Refugee Support group (SHARES) has located a property in Sherborne which will be housing a Syrian refugee family from about mid-June this year. Yetminster responded magnificently to SHARES request for clothing for refugees and we feel sure that its members would extend a generous welcome to a refugee family if a suitable property can be found in the village to house them. The suffering endured by Syrian families over the last five years deserves a response from our prosperous community. With a refugee family in Sherborne and two other Syrian refugee families already housed by Somerset C.C. in Yeovil, a similar family would not feel isolated in Yetminster. As SHARES representatives in Yetminster we are looking for a two, three or four bedroom property in the village to house a Syrian family and to ask for the owner of an unoccupied property in the village to come forward with an offer to let it to a refugee family. The circumstances are: • Refugee tenants have full refugee status from Day 1. This entitles them to all the benefits that an equivalent British family would have. They are not asylum seekers. ROYAL VOLUNTARY SERVICE HOME LIBRARY SERVICE Do you like to read? But find it difficult to get to the library to get new books? We might be able to help. Sherborne Library has a team of dedicated Royal Voluntary Service volunteers who are able to visit on a regular basis, choosing and delivering the books you want from the Library to your home, free of charge. Large print books and talking books can also be delivered. This service is funded by Dorset Library Service, and delivered by the Royal Voluntary Service. It is available across Dorset to anyone who cannot easily get to their local library, and can be provided on a temporary basis as well as long term. All Royal Voluntary Service volunteers are DBS checked and receive ongoing training and support. If you are interested in either receiving the Home Library Service or becoming a volunteer, please contact Maria Jacobson, Royal Voluntary Service Manager Dorset Home Library Service, on 07786 635154 or 01305 236666, or e-mail Maria.Jacobson@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk
ON THE BEAT Unfortunately there was a burglary in the Leigh area in the early hours of Thursday 8th June. The thieves gained entry through a heavy wooden garage door by forcing open a five lever mortise lock. The stolen items include a grey and yellow Cube Cross Pro hybrid bicycle & accessories, a Dewalt cordless drill and impact driver set (in bag), a large and small Kango electric drill, a Petrol Disc Cutter, a Laser level, a Whacker plate together with various spanners and various boxes of stainless steel screws. On the following day, at around 3.10am, a farm outbuilding was also burgled in the
Yetminster area. The thieves stole a generator, a trailer, a pressure washer and various tools on Friday 9th June. Please do be vigilant and recheck your security arrangements. As we have advised before, if you do not already have one consider fitting an audible alarm to sheds and outbuildings. It also helps us if you maintain a list of serial numbers and detailed descriptions of all of your valuable items and equipment should you be unlucky to be visited by thieves. If you have information on either of the two crimes described please contact Dorset Police via our ‘Do it Online’ webpage here: www.dorset.police.uk/do-it-online/ or by telephoning the Dorset Police non-emergency number 101 and quote Dorset Police incident number 08:0052 or 09:0454 Mark Jones (Dorset Police, PCSO 6269, Sherborne Rural)

After a rather erratic week of changeable weather our prayers got answered and Sunday May 21st dawned bright and clear in readiness for the comeback of the YETMINSTER FUN RUN & MAY FAIR and what a day it was! We had a fantastic turn out of runners and walkers to complete the five & tenK route, parents and local community arrived for registration and while many prepared themselves by taking part in the organised warm up routine the volunteer marshals took up their positions, the first aider made sure he was ready to jump into action if needed (luckily as I wasn't competing he could relax a little!). With smiles, laughter and determination the runners set off amidst cheers and good luck wishes and first back over the finish line was St Andrews very own Deputy Head Adam Gough, not surprising as he'd just achieved a fantastic time in the London Marathon a few weeks earlier but he was closely followed by equally enthusiastic runners, please check the school website for photos that capture the ambience of the day. If you compare previous Fun Run photos you'll notice a few familiar faces so a Upgrade to colour? Contact Gordon Ratcliffe email:gojan@btinternet.com

very big thank you to everyone who continues to support us and an equally big thank you to all our new supporters too. The pool committee had worked hard to reinstate the Fun Run for 2017 and the success of the event illustrates what a brilliant job they did. The May Fair also proved to be a winner with continual queues at the food and bar stalls, many coconuts being won, chickens being chucked (not real ones!), ducks being hooked, cards being dealt, hoops being thrown and prizes galore for all the winners. There was even the opportunity to join in a Zumba lesson and judging by the amount of people who took part I can only conclude that Yetminster must have some miracle energy potion in its drinking water. Yes, it certainly was a fun day all made possible by the help given from parent and family volunteers and the support of local businesses. So, in true Oscar fashion, PTFA would like to thank:
THE WHITE HART PUB, BAILEY RIDGE NURSERIES, ELITE ESTATES PROPERTY SERVICES, & BARFOOTS BOUNCERS for their donations and sponsorship also all the parents and teachers who donated goods and their time to make the day a memorable success. Many thanks one and all. Elaine Pennington PTFA Chair wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk

TIM EDWARDS 28th Feb 1948 – 24th May 2017 Tim Edwards, who has tragically died after a long illness, was a well-known face at local and national festivals, food fares and nationwide country shows. As the Distiller of Somerset Cider Brandy, Tim was passionately devoted to its promotion, to which visitors to the Leigh Food Fare in this area over the years will testify. A hugely popular and charismatic man, particularly in his local at the Chetnole Inn, Tim’s deep, rich booming voice and constant laughter added colour and warmth to generate conviviality and which drew people in. Tim hailed originally from Uckfield in East Sussex but spent over 50 years in this part of Dorset, following a brief period in the Royal Artillery and in France. He had the worldly air of a buccaneer perhaps, contemplative whilst rolling one of his French-tobacco fags (even when in his wheelchair) and was one of those larger than life characters (the Chetnole Inn has been blessed by a fair few of them over the years but they seem to be an endangered species these days) who was very direct in his views, particularly when it came to his undying allegiance to the England cricket team. Yet his strong views also imbued a strong sense of fairness and courtesy. Apart from his ingrained love of cricket and his distilling craft Tim’s other equal passion was for his partner of 35 years, Susan Arrow of Leigh (whom he met whilst they both appeared on stage together at the Swan Theatre), and her children and grandchildren. He was to become a much loved stepfather and grand-dad, the sort who become gold to grandchildren who gradually realise how lucky they have been later in life.
It was fitting that such a man be laid to rest in a beautiful, natural place and so it was on the 31st of May that a large group of mourners gathered on a perfect sunny afternoon at Higher Ground Meadows above Corscombe. Tim’s final journey was on the twowheeled wooden bier to his resting place, and the Humanist funeral service was warmly and movingly conducted by Nick Laurie FPC. Poetry was bravely performed by Susan, spoken eulogies with humorous anecdotes came from Roger Bastable Tim’s oldest friend, Julian Temperley, owner of Somerset Cider Brandy who testified to Tim’s uncomplaining toughness as his disability grew worse, this writer on behalf of all local people present and absent, Tim’s work colleague Laura and very movingly and bravely for a young boy, Tim’s grandson Hylas-Jack and grand-daughter Holly. In a final and warm tribute from Julian Temperley, a bottle of 20 year old Cider Brandy made by Tim himself, was emptied onto his absorbent coffin, along with a packet of his favourite tobacco. The whole atmosphere in that natural, beautiful place with its sea of wild flowers and sweeping vista was simply one of love, loss and gratitude. The rich earth opened itself to embrace and transform this important being into itself, and the shadows slowly began to lengthen. Mike Elfed Williams wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk

Notices are being displayed around the three parishes which indicate more fully whether a prospective applicant is eligible and how they should apply. WRIGGLE VALLEY TRANSPORT WORKING PARTY We are continuing to explore the options in relation to providing some form of Community Transport after 24th July when the existing bus service will be withdrawn. Bradford Abbas have now indicated that they would like to participate in what we are trying to do which means that 4 Parish Councils are now working together to try to find a solution. It is clear from our preliminary discussions with the General Manager for South Somerset Community Transport, that we need to establish the likely demand in order to progress things. As such we have designed a simple survey form and this is available at: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/2V2G J9K . Cover - Aerial view of our beautiful Wriggle Valley
churches for specific maintenance or modernisation projects. To date, the Trust has been able to award grants totalling £100,000. So get on your bike or horse, dust off those walking boots and get out in our wonderful countryside to raise money for your local church. Go as part of a group or as a solo explorer and visit as many or as few of the amazing churches that our Benefice is blessed with. Information and sponsorship forms will be available through July and August or email Alex Mitchell altrmitch@hotmail.
Alternatively you can use the link which has been posted on the Yetminster Village Facebook pages and on the Parish Websites. It would therefore be helpful if anyone affected by the loss of bus service could complete the survey. If you don’t have access to the internet (or if you know of anyone who doesn’t have access) then please contact WVTG member John Howes 07989018436 and he will arrange for a form to be made available. It would also be good to have “bus users” on the working group so if you would like to get involved or even just show your interest please contact us on 07941518772 or at wvtgbus@gmail.com. YES IT’S APPROACHING FAST! hopefully you already know that this year’s Yetminster Fair will be on Saturday, 8th July starting at 1.00pm and we hope you will all give us your support again. There will be lots to do on the day with plenty of entertainment in the High Street in front of the White Hart and a variety of stalls in the High Street to tempt you and don’t forget it’s all for good local causes. There will be the usual parade led by the WESSEX HIGHLANDERS with the YETMINSTER IRISH DANCERS, the SCOUTS AND CUBS AND THE GIRL GUIDES before the fair is “officially” opened by TV PRESENTER VALERIE SINGLETON. THE TOWN CRIER from Yeovil will again add to the fun by ringing his bell and letting you know what is going on and our friends at ABBEY RADIO will be on hand to announce the various performers and keep you entertained during the changeovers. THE JUNIOR WRIGGLE VALLEY PLAYERS will be setting up their marquee in the White Hart car park and will be entertaining us in their own inimitable style and Valerie Singleton has promised to read some children’s stories. THE STICKLAND CHOIR will also perform during the afternoon. Blanche and Alex at THE WHITE HART have organised a cider tent and also, entertainment for the evening and we are grateful for their support. Also new this year there will be a DISPLAY OF MODEL BOATS in the Jubilee Hall and this will be along with the SCOUT’S FAMOUS CREAM TEAS which, with the display of vintage cars, are definitely not to be missed!
Entrance and car parking are free so we would ask you to support us by buying a programme – your programme number will be entered in the Fair Lucky Number draw and you will have the chance to win a hamper of goodies. So, we have it all organised and we are raring to go! - it just now needs you so do please come along, enjoy yourselves and help us raise some money for our village organisations. SCAM MAIL Scam mail is sent with the sole intention of obtaining money through fraud and deception. There are many types of postal scams including fake lotteries, prize draws, clairvoyant and bogus health cures. Royal Mail has launched a new initiative to help protect consumers from scam mail. It will initially focus on customers receiving high volumes of scam mail and will block and impound scam mail at its major distribution centres before it reaches the customer’s letterbox. Legitimate business and personal mail will continue to be delivered to the customer in the usual way. Using Special Delivery, Royal Mail will proactively contact those
households it believes are receiving high volumes of scam mail. They will be given the telephone number for a dedicated Royal Mail help line, email address or Freepost address to contact the Royal Mail if they have concerns or want to arrange a home visit from Royal Mail staff. In the six months from November 2016 to April 2017, 700,000 scam mail letters were intercepted and prevented from reaching their target victims. Anyone can become a scam victim, if it has happened to you contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on
03454 04 05 06 who will take this situation seriously. This helpline is the first point of contact for consumers seeking advice or wishing to report a problem to trading standards. SOUTH WEST TRAINS TRAVEL TO LONDON Are you planning to travel to London by train from Yeovil Junction or Sherborne during August? If so, you should be aware of the works at Waterloo Station which are planned to take place from 5th to 28 August. There is a major project to be undertaken to extend platforms, change track layouts and signalling but most importantly to bring the platforms of the former Waterloo International Eurostar station into use as part of Waterloo mainline station. During the works, platforms 1 to 9 will be closed so obviously many fewer trains will be able to go into Waterloo. Over the Bank Holiday weekend 25th to 28th platforms 10 to 14 will be closed as well. This will mean fairly serious disruption to our trains. Services will be disrupted and
MICROSOFT TECH-SUPPORT SCAMMERS USING WANNACRY ATTACK TO LURE VICTIMS This is a message sent via Dorset Alert. Action Fraud has received the first reports of Tech-Support scammers claiming to be from Microsoft who are taking advantage of the global WannaCry ransomware attack. One victim fell for the scam after calling a ‘help’ number advertised on a pop up window. The window which wouldn’t close said the victim had been affected by WannaCry Ransomware. The victim granted the fraudsters remote access to their PC after being convinced there wasn’t sufficient anti-virus protection. The fraudsters then installed Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, which is actually free and took £320 as payment. It is important to remember that Microsoft’s error and warning messages on your PC will never include a phone number.
there will be fewer trains. Some trains will stop at Basingstoke and some will be diverted to Reading. There is a warning leaflet available but it is very general. NEWS FROM ST ANDREW’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL
ACORN CLASS’ TRIP TO HAYNES MOTOR MUSEUM Acorn Class had a fantastic trip to Haynes Motor Museum in June. The children learnt about the history of the motor car, how the materials they are made from have changed over time, from wooden wheels to light plastic racing cars, and how lots of people assembling a car on a production line could make so many more cars than just one person making a quality but very expensive car. We measured a Mini and a Cadillac and compared their length. We then estimated how many children we could fit in the Cadillac; we managed to fit all 18 children in various parts of the car! It involved some great team work. Well done Acorn Class! Matt was so impressed with how well you worked together and mentioned several times what a polite and well behaved class you were. All the children and some adults too, got to dress up in a variety of costumes. See if you can spot Acorn's King and Queen and their chauffeur complete with goggles. The bear skin gloves were a little big for the chauffeur but I think you will agree they really did look the part. After a well earned lunch the children then had a chauffeur driven ride in a Bentley, the Old Grey Lady. The leather seats were very soft and sumptuous as were all the materials used in the interior. This car is often used as a wedding car so we were very lucky to have a ride in it. The children also enjoyed some free time on the bikes around a miniature road system. Once again the children were very courteous to other families using this area. We were very proud of them all.

A ROYAL OAK SAPLING HAS BEEN PLANTED IN OUR CONSERVATION AREA. CONGRATULATIONS YETMINSTER ON GETTING YOUR ROYAL OAK SAPLING! The Dorset Gardens Trust Schools Committee decided to celebrate the 90th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, which was in 2016, by gathering, with permission from the Queen Elizabeth herself, acorns grown that year in Windsor Great Park. There are some most interesting ancient oaks in the park over 1300 years old.

CHURCH NEWS
Our Church Communities NEWS FROM THE THREE VALLEYS’ TEAM It’s strange to contemplate how each scene, though constant in terms of the countryside I am looking at (trees, fields and hills, and so on), provokes in me such a variety of emotional response. The sun shines changelessly on the daytime around us, so what alters in these different scenes is not the light being shone but the way in which I sense it. Of course, I have no choice in how I perceive natural light. But the world around us is illuminated by a light greater even than the sun. This is a light we can choose to ignore or embrace. If we do the latter, it will set our lives ablaze with love. Nicholas Clegg
I am lucky to live in a house with wonderful views. To the east, I see the sun rising behind the ridge towards Sherborne. To the west, I see the golden disc of the sun dropping slowly down in the direction of Yeovil. In the mornings, the valley in front of the ridge might be covered in thick mist, succumbing slowly to the early sunshine, or it might be hidden by rain. On a sunny day, the light might already have made the trees glow emerald green. On a cloudy evening, the range of different shades of red, orange, and grey, floating in stark contrast with each other, is staggering. During a cloudless dusk, pastel shades (blue, green, and pink) ease effortlessly into each other, bathing the countryside in a soft glow.
The Rev. Dr Malcolm Guite, poet, priest and chaplain of Girton College, Cambridge, will be talk about Seamus Heaney, George Herbert, the poetic imagination and its relationship to faith.

10.30am Rogation Service Our Church Communities
Of course we’re at church on Sunday It’s a habit of ours, so to speak. Of course we’re at church on a Sunday (Certainly not any other day of the week). Only – Last Sunday we were all too busy (Well, Uncle John was coming to tea). And the week before Sally was sick – (I think it was Sally, not me).
And the week before that it was sunny So we picnicked on Solsbury Hill. Next week it’s Auntie Ann’s wedding In Surrey at two – what a day! Me and Sally are going to be bridesmaids, I think we’ll be tired next day. We’re ALWAYS in church on a Sunday, Almost always, or mostly, I’d say, Just sometimes we are busy, not well, or lazy And what about you - any way?

CLUB NEWS
Club News Nora Windridge Sadly Nora is no longer with us, and our sympathies go out to her husband, Michael, and all her family. Nora was an active member the Yetminster History Society for over 30 years. She produced several books on different aspects of Yetminster's heritage, both in her own name and jointly with others. Coming to the village in 1980 she joined a small group led by Jocelyn Berthoud working in the kitchen of The Old Vicarage, Church Street. They were interested in the old houses of Yetminster and were assisting an academic from Bristol University, R Machin, collect data for his book. It was here Nora caught the Yetminster history bug. She had found her vocation. Her first outing was a joint venture with Jocelyn to write a history of St. Andrew’s Church. Published in 1987, it remains an excellent guide to its story. She loved the research and tracking down the records that had spread over time to Dorchester, Trowbridge in Wiltshire, and various archives in London. Disappointed only sometimes, when finding 19th century letters whose penny black stamps had already been removed from their envelopes! Her first personal project was Yetminster At School, which traces the
history of schooling in the village from Tudor times to the opening of the present day St. Andrew’s School in Stonyacres. Aptly her home, Sanders, is a conversion of a former school building. Part of the original flagstone flooring can be seen outside the house, now a parking space. Perhaps her favourite work was The Prebends Of Yetminster. Nora became one of the few who actually understood how the Prebend system worked. She believed it was due to Yetminster’s almost unique system of prebendary courts that we still have so many fine buildings today. The courts controlled the tenure of land. Local farmers instead of being beholden to the Lord of the Manor paid a fee to the court. Thus they could guarantee property stayed within the family and were willing to invest in more elaborate structures that could be passed on to their heirs. Nora has set the bar high for us present members of the society. Long may she be remembered; and may we be able to live up to her standards for our projects in the future .Read one of her poems on p 62. Outings and next meeting. The last visit of the season is a GUIDED TOUR OF SHERBORNE SCHOOL. It is fully booked at time of writing. You can put your name on the waiting list. There are often cancellations: family visits, unexpected hospital appointments, etc etc. Leave details with Elizabeth Jubb on 873397. The next meeting will be 13th September – AGM & Jonathon Weeks: “A BLAST FROM THE PAST”

we were swiftly escorted across the terrace to the orangery for our cream tea. After a sociable time amongst the arrangements of peonies, tree ferns and trailing geraniums we were fortified to return outside to ‘brave the elements’ and discover the refurbishment of the gardens. A previously silt-laden lake has been drained and brought to life again with fresh water, creating a truly tranquil setting. We continued across fine lawns to admire the avenue of limes and to gaze back at the Queen Anne style house across a stunning, sunken topiary garden with a statued fountain at the centre. To the eastern side of the estate the natural wooded area has magnificent copper beech trees. Returning towards the house are a series of walled gardens, outside which is a delightful herbaceous border. The gateways through the walls were flanked by red Sambucus nigra, the ornamental elderflower. Sheltered within the walls were a pool area, a cutting garden with peonies and climbing roses, an area for chickens, ducks and goats and a green house. It really would be lovely to return again in a few years to see, and admire, the continuing redevelopment of this ancient garden.
CHETNOLE AND LEIGH GARDEN CLUB
“The nicest thing about the rain is that it always stops. Eventually.” Eeyore To say that it was a wet day on 5th June would be an understatement! Nevertheless, well protected with rainy day clothing and footwear, garden club members assembled in Milborne Port to visit the garden of privately owned Ven House. Lord Charles Allen has been the current owner only in recent years and the gardens are now being ‘brought back to life.’ Greeted warmly by James FosterPegg, the estate-manager/head gardener,

CLUB NEWS
The evening commenced with the usual business and then Heather Baldock and Sarah Lumsden shared their experiences of their time at Denman College - Heather to study the "Music of George Gershwin & Cole Porter" and Sarah "Family History for Beginners". Both were very enthusiastic and recommended Denman College to everyone, especially the meals! Our May talk was "The Land of Tigers" with the very popular speaker Chris Shaw. Over the years we have heard many of her talks and she makes them very interesting and in a lighthearted manner. She, and three others, went to Madhya Pradesh in India about three years ago as this area has more tigers there than any other country. Sadly in the past so many tigers had been poached for use in Chinese medicine and in black magic that OPERATION TIGER was set up all over India to try and stop the numbers of tigers declining. They decided to fence off areas of National Park solely for tigers but if they did escape and kill any cattle, the farmers would get compensated. Tigers really only kill humans if they are extremely hungry. Chris and her party were very lucky to have an expert guide called Krishna and they slept under canvas but as Chris said it was "high end camping" with brocade drapes inside the tent! Each day they always left very early ie 4.30am to go on one of their tiger drives when it would be freezing cold and to enter into the parks, they always needed to take their passports as these areas are strictly monitored. They would then return for breakfast at 10.30am, have a snooze and then go out again at 3.30pm for a final Tiger drive as the Parks closed smartly at 6pm and on one of their trips they had just spotted a tiger in the distance when they had to leave the Park, as if they did not leave on time, the Guide could lose his licence - they are very strict. They had many forays into the
three different Parks they visited which resulted in not sighting a tiger, only signs of foot prints. However the Parks were beautiful and Chris enjoyed sitting in the land rover and just being still and watching the wonderful bird life and in the second Game Park they visited called Canna she marvelled at the beautiful green trees. The third Game Park they visited had lots of bamboo and again after two drives they had seen nothing. However on the third drive they hit the jackpot as there in front of them strolling down the road was a tiger - no more than six inches away from them. So that obviously made the whole trip worthwhile! You have to be patient to go game watching! When she revisited the same parks with her daughter two years later, they saw loads more tigers but she felt that first one was very special! She then showed us some slides to finish her talk - one we won’t forget.
Our July meeting is The "ORIGIN OF GIN & TASTING" by Ros Nehmes and in August "MY LIFE IN FUNERALS" by Wakeley Brothers again, you cannot complain our talks are boring!! Anne Reason wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk
YETMINSTER & RYME GARDEN, ART & CRAFT SOCIETY AMMONITES AT CHELSEA Take a look at the photograph here and be prepared to be impressed! This is one of eight giant fossils crafted by Philippa Louden as part of the Dorset and Guernsey NAFAS exhibit in the grand marquee at the Chelsea Flower Show in May, entitled ‘A Walk Through Time’. As well as these lambs’ tails ammonites, Philippa also made hemispherical fossils from monkey puzzle tree leaves (that has to be a first!!!) as well as bay leaf spheres and her works of floral art were part of the Jurassic Coast section of the exhibit. But you don’t know the best bit yet. Philippa’s team of nine floral artists won a GOLD MEDAL and she brought the certificate along to our club meeting to celebrate yet another first – a connection, if somewhat tenuous, between our Garden Club and Chelsea and we were very proud of her achievement. Well done you!! THE ANSWER LIES IN THE SOIL At the same meeting we came down to earth (quite literally) with David Usher’s very knowledgeable talk about soil – what it is, where it comes from and how it can be improved. We enjoyed David’s last talk on the restoration of Hestercombe Gardens, so invited him back again to share his expertise in a different way. He set up neat rows of soils, and took us through the components of sand, loam, silt and clay and it was surprising to learn that clay consisted of the smallest particles of all; it is just lumpy because they all like to stick together!
We learnt how to improve these soils with organic matter which can help sand particles bind together or, if that’s what you want, breaks down that depressingly sticky clay. It’s quite a thought that without such compost, soil would be nothing more than very small pieces of mineral rock. Once we got going on the subject of making your own compost, a lot of us were in our comfort zone, although it was a bit surprising to learn that there are very few actual nutrients in garden compost, you need a fertilizer for that – but that’s another subject altogether. You should have been there!
NEXT MEETING… …SUMMER PARTY AND QUIZ on 11th July at 7pm. It will be just as good as the one two years ago, we promise! Judy Ferretter
