News from the Villages BATCOMBE.....

"A peck of March dust is worth a kings ransom " but this year farmers and gardeners alike will be hoping for rain. With very little rain since December things are looking serious. It is going to be a busy spring and summer in Batcombe. The Easter Sunday service on 8 April will be at the usual time of 10.15am.

The very popular Cream Teas will again be at Hilfield Friary on Sunday 17 June at 3pm. The date for Batcombe’s Jubilee Celebrations will be Monday 4 June and a meeting will be arranged shortly to decide on the format for the day (more news next month). The next Batcombe monthly coffee morning will be on Wednesday 4 April at 11am at Kathy Lawrence (Rowans). There are more exciting events planned for the autumn, so watch this space …… Alan Bastone

CHETNOLE..... with Melbury Bubb & Stockwood

April in Chetnole brings a warm welcome to the Jackson family who have moved all the way from Leigh to The Old Post Office in the very heart of the village and we hope that Andy and Sue, daughter Abbie (9) and dog Lola will be very happy in their new home and we wish John and Pat Wyatt good luck for the future. The couple hope to settle in Oxfordshire nearer their family. As the milder weather approaches out come the more sporting members of the community - walking, running and cycling past my bedroom window on a Sunday morning making me feel extremely lazy as I lie in bed drinking my tea. Our very

own Gary Sturgess will be entering the Virgin London Marathon once again on Sunday 22 April and running to raise money for our local hospice - St Margaret’s, Yeovil. What a great cause and good luck Gary - fingers crossed you bust that four hour barrier! Let’s hope he has an "extra Weetabix” that morning. Anna Taylor from Melbury Bubb also needs our support as she is taking part in the 2012 London to Brighton Challenge on 12 May to raise funds for the British Red Cross. If you would like to sponsor her have a look a her fundraising page here http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/AnnaT aylorLondonToBrighton. Anna will walk 100km in one go so if you spot her bulk-buying Weetabix in town you know the reason why! All the best to you too. wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 5

Epic half-marathon memory of uncle

series

in

When my uncle died in September I pledged to pay tribute to him in a spectacular way. Also named Philip Tebbatt, my uncle had died aged just sixty five years old but had packed a huge amount into his life as a devoted father, grandfather and uncle, as the village bobby for Market Bosworth in Leicestershire and also as a prolific figure in the Scout Association for many years, achieving, amongst other things, the bar to the Silver Acorn in 2001. To commemorate Uncle Philip’s life and achievements I am running a half-marathon every month from March to October this year and hope to raise a substantial amount of money for the Scout Association as well as the hospice in Leicester that cared for him so well in his final hours. I have already completed the Silverstone Half and am on my way to achieving my goal. If you would like to sponsor me then please take a look at my fundraising page at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/PhilipTebbatt

where you can also read my blog on how well I am progressing. Wish me luck, I am going to need a lot of it! Philip Tebbatt 6

Saturday 3 March saw another packed Village Hall for the Chetnole Jazz Café. The French Gypsy Swing Band kept the audience entertained throughout. The band, “Petites Annonces” said the audience and venue were perfect and would love to be invited back. “Petites Annonces” have posted a video of one of their songs, from Saturday night, on YouTube/Facebook so Chetnole is fast becoming the centre for village entertainment. This was the last Jazz Café for the 2011/2012 Winter Program but another program is being planned for the next winter series so watch out for the adverts and posters in the Autumn. The Village Hall Committee would like to thank everyone for their support with this new style of entertainment. WRIGGLE VALLEY WOMEN’S GROUP

DUck Preparations are well underway for the 2012 Chetnole Duck Race. The Race will start from the bridge at the bottom of Mill Lane at 2.00pm on Sunday 13 May. The Ducks will race, from here, to the ford in Deep Ford Lane. Whilst the Ducks recover, Teas, Coffees, Soft Drinks and Cake will be served in the Village Hall where the winning Ducks will be announced. Fearsome friends

Anna Taylor

I have been reading the Wriggle Valley magazine and thought I would introduce ourselves. We are the Drapper Family and we moved into one of the Magna houses, Stavordale Cottage, in Stockwood, back in October. We are a home educating family of eight children so you might see us around during school time. As the weather improves Chetnole park/recreation ground will become our sports ground where the children love to run, play basketball and generally get rid of some of their energy. We regularly use the mobile library to get books out to research for projects and the driver very kindly makes a special stop at the end of our drive. Each Sunday we go to Yetminster Methodist Church and support their work, and back in December we enjoyed the carol service at St Edwold’s, the tiny church just over the fields from our house. The Wriggle Valley magazine has been really helpful when trying to find the local Health centre, riding stables, and driving school, and to be kept informed of what is going on around the village. The Diamond Jubilee celebrations sound very exciting and we hope to be supporting as much as we can. Everyone has been so welcoming and it is a privilege to be able to live in this most wonderful part of Dorset. Thanks for all you do to keep us all informed about what is going on around the village.

ST PETER’S CHURCH, CHETNOLE The Annual Vestry Meeting and the Annual Parochial Church Meeting will take place on Thursday, 19 April at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. All Welcome wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 9

Report on Chetnole and Stockwood Parish Council meeting held on Thursday 8 March A meeting is to be arranged between a member of the Dorset County Council Highways Team and two willing volunteers who are prepared to take on the task of constructing new ‘finger posts’ for the signs within Chetnole. The existing fingers are in bad repair and as they are not a legal requirement, DCC no longer fund their repair/replacement, but they are happy for the Parish Council to organise the repair as long as it is done under their guidance and to their standard. Unfortunately the Parish Council will still have to pay for the materials! The Chairman warned of new legislation under the Localism Bill, requiring Parish Councillors to declare not only their own interests, but also those of their spouse/partner and for those interests to then be published on the Dorset for You website. There is also a need for a Neighbourhood Plan, which may be formulated along with our adjoining parishes. Work to thin out some of the trees in the Playing Field this autumn is being

considered by the Sub-Committee following recommendations in a report by a professional tree surgeon, which was commissioned by the Parish Council. After many years as Parish Council representative on the Playing Field SubCommittee, Cllr Mark Gallimore has announced that he intends to stand down, although he will remain on the Parish Council. The Chairman thanked him for all his help over the years, overseeing the various projects and the installation of new equipment. Cllr Owen Pope volunteered to take his place on the Sub-Committee. One of the reasons why Cllr Gallimore wished to resign from his playing field duties, was to give more time to the Parish Plan. He is hoping to ignite more public interest to assist in furthering the objectives of the Plan. The possibility of entering the “Best Kept Village” competition was discussed. In the mid 1980’s Chetnole won this competition (a plaque is on the wall in the Village Hall). One resident has kindly offered to look into this, but again, he will need a bunch of keen helpers if he is to take it further. Sue Woodford, Parish Clerk

All seems very quite in Hilfield at the moment, but everything's iGn bud adding early colour to the landscape. It's nice to see Richard and Sally's cows out in the fields, hence this little poem. Spring has sprung, the grass has ris I wonder where the birdie is? There he is up in the sky He's just dropped some whitewash in my eye! I'm alright, I won't cry, I'm just glad Vickery's cows can't fly! A very positive meeting was held on the future of Hilfield Church and we have a strong group of people in our village willing to give up their time and energy in keeping this beautiful little church up and running with services throughout the year. Thank you to you all.

Dates for the diary: Easter Service to include an Easter Egg Hunt for the children on Sunday 8 April at 4pm, with tea and biscuits at the church. LEIGH..... Representative: Philippa Toulson philippa@folksw.org.uk

It feels like only five minutes since we were unloading the furniture van and moving our goods and chattels, our home and office and large boys into Church Farm. In fact it is exactly three years this month. The boys have grown and left and our goods and chattels have multiplied to fill their space and we are almost unpacked! I feel the least qualified person in the village to be taking over from David, Anne and Philip and had there been stiff competition, or indeed any competition at all, I would have remained at the very bottom of a long list!!! Anyway, here I am and you have only yourselves to blame! I am quietly confident that all the good and busy people of Leigh will set about being my eyes and ears in the village and will pass me news of all the comings and goings, plans and events, joys and sadness. That way I shall hopefully be spared peering through your windows and eavesdropping on your conversations!

St Andrew’s Church, Leigh Please note that our Annual Parochial Church Meeting is on Thursday 12 April in the Committee Room, Leigh Village Hall. The meeting starts with refreshments (wine, coffee/tea) at 7pm and the actual business will commence at 7.30pm. The meeting is open to all and it would be great to see a good turnout to find out what is going on in your church. The Good Friday service is in Leigh at 11am – see under Church News for the rest of the Easter services. Please put Saturday 19 May in your diaries for our annual May Fair from 2-4.30pm. COFFEE MORNING 10.30am, Saturday 21 April

This year we are raising funds for a custom built greenhouse for our residents use. And on that very subject the Leigh Welcome Pack has recently been revised and updated so if you have a new neighbour then please do let me know and we will have a Pack ready for you to hand over. By the time you read this Easter will nearly be upon us. We will be eyeing up our Easter eggs and enjoying the spring sunshine and my inbox will be heavy with all your news. Fingers crossed. A very happy Easter to you all. Philippa Toulson

February at the Old Vicarage has seen lots of changes. The South sitting room now has luxurious curtains and carpets and the new office is rapidly taking shape. Valentine’s Day was celebrated with the making of cards and a sing song accompanied by Val Rowsell. Heart shaped iced biscuits were also made and decorated with help from Connie. Wendy Bassett provided a fantastic morning’s entertainment with songs from the 50’s and 60’s and St. David’s day was a riot of daffodils and stirring Welsh music. Emily and Sue have now completed the Gold Standard Framework portfolio and we hope to have news soon on what status we have achieved. We are now looking forward to a busy spring, with the activity diary rapidly filling up. Our coffee morning is on Saturday 21 April at 10.30am. We have many stalls including bric a brac, books, raffle and lots of bargains. We would be very grateful for donations of goods, which can be left in the office. We look forward to seeing you then! Finally many congratulations to Josie and Gavin on the birth of their baby daughter, making Annie and Ian very proud grandparents! Jan Milward

Easter is just around the corner and it is wonderful to see the daffodils exploding into colour around the village. Congratulations to Helping Hands on their launch, providing support to people in need. The issue of the Post Office still rumbles on, the site of the new location for a diminished facility to be located in Yetminster has not yet been decided. The consultation period for the proposed Gypsy and Traveller site in Coles lane has concluded. Coles Lane is still one of the four sites being considered and there are disturbing news articles appearing in local publications that do not support local resident views or the Parish Councils stance. If residents have strong views on this subject now is the time to write to the Council and express their concerns. Shelagh Hill would like to apologise for misspelling Nora Windridge’s name in the tribute she wrote about Nina 2012 is already disappearing fast and it will soon be time to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee events and the Yetminster Fair, please get behind these celebrations and help make them a huge success. Beer Mill Mead Conservation Area, Leigh Dick and Julian visited the site in February and examined 16 nesting boxes. Three open fronted boxes did not appear to have been used the others had variable amounts of moss/leaves. One needs a new catch, another needs a repaired front, and one has been taken away for replacement. Two boxes were too high for the ladder. The Tawny Owl box needs securing and it could not be reached on this visit. The area is on the Leigh Yetminster Road just on the Leigh side of Stake Ford. It is available for anyone interested in wildlife, plants, birds, fauna or just spending a quiet time enjoying the peace of this small area. New horse vets established in Holnest Holnest Park Equine is a new specialist equine veterinary practice established in Holnest in October 2011 by Paul Legerton. Having worked in horse veterinary practice in Dorset for nine years, Paul spotted a demand for consistent personalised veterinary care for horses from an experienced horse vet. By providing a mobile service overheads and fees are kept as low as possible after investing in high quality mobile equipment including a digital Xray, scanner and scope. Surgeries requiring general anaesthesia are referred to local or specialised practices while 24 hr back up from another local horse vet ensures all emergencies can be

catered for. In spite of launching in a recession, take up is so far exceeding all forecasts suggesting that the blend of value with quality service will remain popular. Paul obtained the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Certificate in Equine Practice in 2005 having originally qualified with honours from Liverpool University. He has worked in equine practice in Staffordshire, Oxfordshire, Australia and New Zealand and has a keen interest in racing having attended Uttoxeter, Wolverhampton, Wincanton and Taunton race courses as duty veterinary surgeon. Prospective new clients from all walks of equestrian life are welcome to contact Paul on 07930 150269.

Jubilee ‘It’s a Knockout’ Fun Olympics As we all know this year is the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the 2012 Olympics. The Queen’s wish is that communities all get together and join in with the festivities of the Jubilee. With this in mind the PTA of St Andrew’s School and the Yetminster Jubilee Committee have got together and planned an It’s a Knockout Fun Olympics on the school playing fields for all the Wriggle Villages on Saturday 2 June. The event will open at 12pm with Outside Caterers, Bar, Tea Tent, Outside Stalls and entertainment for all. The pool will be open for viewing in its new state and the main event ‘It’s a Knockout’ will start at 1.30 – 2pm.

The teams will be made up of 10, adults, children or adults and children. All you have to do is fill in the entry form which you can get from the outlets in the advert or e-mail annaandkids@hotmail.co.uk with your team name, and the names of the members of the team and contact details of the captain. You then need to design a flag for the team and turn up on the day. We are hoping for as many villages to join up for this fun event and the other villagers to join us in supporting their teams, catch up with friends and enjoy the fun and frolics. I look forward to seeing you all on the 2nd June and wish you fun in making up your team names and designing your flags Anna Matthews, Chairperson St Andrew’s PTA

Messy Church The 3rd Messy Church was held at St Andrew's School on Sunday 11 March. Over 50 adults and children attended plus another 16 on the Messy Church team. Our theme for the afternoon was "Love your World" and the 'Craft Time' centred around God's creation. The children had fun with 7 different crafts including bird tables, bird food holders, prayer balloons, leaf painting and grass heads. After craft time, we had 'Celebration Time' when we celebrated the wonderful world God has created. 'Chomping time' followed where we shared a tea of pizzas, sausage rolls, salad, fruit and lots of yummy cakes! The afternoon was great fun and we look forward to welcoming you to our next Messy Church on 24 June. wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 37

Frankham Farm Celebrates 30 years

Frankham Farm, Ryme Intrinseca, this year celebrates 30 years of opening for the National Gardens Scheme which raises money for Caring and Gardening Charities. During this time over £15,500 has been raised for the N.G.S from admissions to the garden. The late Jo Earle began to create the garden in the 1960’s and continued to extend it over the years. Other than an old Bramley apple tree in the vegetable garden and some ancient oaks everything has been planted by Jo and Richard and includes some unusual trees and shrubs. The 3 ½ acre garden has been designed for year round interest; winter shrubs and spring bulbs are followed by perennials, roses, clematis and other climbers, which led to the garden receiving an award from the Dorset Wildlife Trust for wildlife friendly planting. Trees are a feature with over 80 species of oak being distributed around the farm and garden, and many field corners have been planted with trees as wildlife/conservation areas. In 2010 the RSPB surveyed part of the farm and recorded 44 species of birds, 8 of which were on the “red” alert list and included corn bunting, skylarks and spotted flycatchers. 38

Teas are provided by local ladies and the proceeds are donated to Ryme church; plants are also on sale for charity, and last year £450 from plant sales was donated to the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. Richard Earle continues to open the garden for the NGS in memory of Jo and the garden is well worth a visit. Opening dates this year are 29 April, 24 June and 14 October, 2-5pm, admission £3 children free (sorry no dogs). Andy Templeman

We tried a much thicker wire, but the squirrels returned – and they were successful. Finally, we used medium-thin wire, thin enough to foil the squirrels but strong enough to withstand the gales. Bailey Ridge Plants Opens in Jubilee Year waved in the breeze and then the sun came out from behind the clouds and shone down as Oliver snipped the ribbon with a set of gardening shears. A ripple of applause from friends, family and budding gardeners was followed by cups of tea, coffee, apple cake and muffins. Bailey Ridge Plant centre is small and personable and the emphasis will be placed on recycling, sowing and growing. There is a lovely selection of shrubs, herbaceous, trees, roses and bedding and in recognition of Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee celebrations Bailey Ridge Plants have Jubilee Oak whips for sale complete with tree stake and tree shelter. What better way to commemorate such a special event if you have room in your garden. Bailey Ridge Plants is open daily between 9am and 5.30pm. Please be sure to call if you are passing. Telephone 01963 210999 or visit www.baileyridgegardenplants.co.uk. Sue Dodge

The weather was fickle and heavy rain had been forecast for the launch of Bailey Ridge Plants the village garden centre between Leweston & Leigh. One or two light showers interrupted last minute preparations. Frenetic activity to get the place open had meant that there were a few loose ends but nothing serious. Mr Oliver Letwin, Member of Parliament for West Dorset arrived on time and was the very first customer through the doors charging to secure a Clematis for his wife on Mother’s Day. Raising Funds for the British Heart Foundation Although it now seems like a long time ago, I would like to thank everyone who helped me raise money for the British Heart Foundation. Even St Andrew’s Primary School mucked in on their ‘Wear Red Day’ last June. others from all over the country as we cycled 300 miles through Vietnam and Cambodia. This five day challenge took us from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to the border with Cambodia and then to the ancient temples of Angkor Wat. The main challenge was undoubtedly the heat and humidity. It reached 38°C one afternoon and we were drinking about four litres of water a day. Many suffered from heat exhaustion but the

stamina and resilience built up over many AgustaWestland financial year ends enabled me to keep going throughout! In total, I managed to raise £3,775 for the BHF. I can recommend a ‘World Experiences’ challenge to anyone! Simon Cridland

Never let it be said that we no longer have Community Spirit! Chetnole Village Hall was packed to the rafters on Saturday evening, 17 March; local talent came together with fantastic performances, including singing, poetry, stories, instrumentals and ensemble sing-alongs, led by organiser Jim Aldhouse. The night kicked off with the house band, the Wriggle Valley Wranglers, including Jim, Mal Prodger, Jan Witt, Ken Horswell and Pippa Scott, who launched the evening with a medley of classic "rock ‘n’ roll". This was followed by brilliant performances from Jim, his daughter Phillippa (via video link from Singapore), Stan Darley, Nils, Linda Caroll, Bella Neate-Clegg, John Fripp and Jenny Shepherd and they were astounding. Some wonderful music was performed by Esther and Jane Robotham with Simon Eadon, as well as Amy Goodfellow, who blew the audience away with songs from Les Misérables, Jesus Christ Super Star and The Wizard Of Oz. Jim, reunited with David Gough, took the crowd by storm, with their rendition of hilarious folk songs, including a song all about their “little nicotine girl”. Of course, there was a very important cause behind all of this excitement; Jim

and Michele, with their son Robert and daughter-in-law Tracy, hold the charity Down’s Syndrome Association very close to their heart. Their grand daughter, Poppy, Robert's daughter, was born with Down's Syndrome and the Association helps to support families caring for children with the Syndrome, including fundraising and the simple raising of awareness. Tracy, Poppy's mother, gave a passionate plea for us to treat all children with Down's Syndrome with the same respect as any other child. Raising awareness and finance for this organisation truly helps families like the Aldhouses, so to see people of the Wriggle Valley coming together for such a wonderful cause, and raising a whopping £1100, was a wonderful thing.

Nils and Jim singing a Sw edish ditty Thanks are due to all who helped make this evening fantastic. Robert, Jim and Michele's son, is running the London Marathon and with the help of the people of the Wriggle Valley is now well on target to raise £2,300 for the Down's Syndrome Association. DVDs of the evening will be available from Jim for a donation to the Down’s Syndrome Association of £5 Hebe Neate-Clegg www.justgiving.com/Robert-Aldhouse

Starting on Palm Sunday, Holy week takes us on a journey through the dramatic events of Jesus’ last week. Christians have often found it helpful to re-enacted the events of that week so that they can enter into the drama and experience some of the pain and the joy of the disciples. Sadly we won’t be able to act out the Palm Sunday procession as there don’t seem to be any donkeys available this year, but we will be celebrating our own Passover or Seder meal, the meal Jesus ate with his disciples on the night before he died. During the meal the story of Israel’s escape from slavery is told and each item on the menu has a special significance. It was at this meal that Jesus spoke of his own death and spoke of the bread and the wine as his body and blood. www.wrigglevalleybenefice.org 48

…gone gardening Planning your Garden Celebrations? There are just a couple of months before the Queen’s Jubilee, and this will be closely followed by the Olympics. We are going to have an extremely busy, patriotic summer this year and no doubt the village halls of Britain have already planned their street parties and festivals. Celebrations all round and what better place to start than in the garden with a Jubilee hanging basket, window box or a border arrangement using red white and blue. If the Union Jack’s colours do not appeal then purple is an excellent royal colour and looks fabulous with gold and deep yellows. As a feature plant there are plenty of upright and trailing geraniums to choose from some having variegated or ivy-leaf shape. A geranium is a completely reliable plant and when given the right encouragement can create an amazing show. Fuchsias literally drip with colour displaying tremendous, stunningly fresh prolific blooms that stretch out for the whole of the summer. In most instances fuchsia flowers can carry two colours but there are plenty of exceptions, even elegant white forms. Geraniums and fuchsias are easy to grow, and by taking cuttings from them you can always be assured of new plants every year without having to buy new ones. The range of colours and the names available are mind

boggling, be sure to look at the varieties in the flesh before choosing. Do not be deceived by the colours in plant catalogues, pictures can be very misleading. For a wonderful frothy royal blue or stunning white, lobelia takes all the prizes and can either trail or be upright giving it the flexibility to be used as an edging plant. There is a fabulous double flowered lobelia known as Kathleen Mallard which really catches your eye. New for 2012 there is a blue Diascia which looks interesting, definitely worth a try. Bacopas are dainty. Alysum a bit oldfashioned but versatile. Surfinias produce outstanding flowers when nurtured, but to get your collection of plants off to a flying start you should choose a good multipurpose compost, mix it with a little fertiliser if you have it and a few grains of swellgel so that your tub or basket doesn’t dry out too quickly during the summer months. Feed your containers regularly, at the rate they grow and flower they will need plenty of water and nutrients to keep them looking good. For a special commemorative rose perhaps choose Rose Scarlet Queen Elizabeth. Happy Gardening! Sue Dodge The Company of Landscapers wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 57

Club NewsChetnole Cricket Club Chetnole & Leigh Garden Club On the evening of 5 March, 50 or so bargain-hunting members of the Garden Club descended on the Castle Gardens Garden Centre in Sherborne to participate in the annual ritual ransacking of the store. Taking maximum advantage of the exclusive 25% Gold Card discount offered annually to Club members by The Gardens Group, shelves and displays were ruthlessly pillaged as trolleys and baskets were filled for presentation to check-out staff by the slightly smug looking customers. Seeds, bulbs, fertiliser, weed killer, birdfeeders, seed potatoes, tools, miscellaneous gardening equipment and, of course, plants, were scooped up at bargain prices. Lists of bags of compost, soil improver, grit, bark mulch etc. were handed in for home delivery the next day – a great service by The Gardens Group and much appreciated by all. Before the mayhem, the evening had begun very differently. Tea and biscuits were genteelly served followed by an educational and amusing presentation by Mike Burks, Managing Director of The Gardens Group, in which he spoke on current colour in the gardens indicating an array of beautiful plants which can enhance our grounds at this time of year. This civilised start to the evening was in stark contrast to the stampede through the centre and its attractions once the deal seeking membership had been released for its retail activities. Mike, Brian and all at Castle Gardens are to be complimented on and thanked for their courtesy and patience, which

was very much appreciated by all in attendance. What great service they offer! The next Garden Club event will take place on 2 April at 7.30 pm when Peter Orchard, founder of the “Nature of Dorset” website, will speak on “Your Garden – its importance to Wildlife”. Tuesday Club On a dull February afternoon, one of the best travel speakers we have had the privilege of getting to speak to our club led us into the wonderful history and scenery of the rose red city of Petra. Christine Simpson is so fluent and articulate in her presentation that you feel you are one with her every step of the way. Petra is a wonderful city of ages old buildings which

have stood the tests of time and the elements. The city cannot be seen from the surrounding countryside but is approached by a road leading to a steep ravine, and suddenly there is the glorious sight of the rose red buildings. Christine’s pictures were beautiful and certainly whetted our appetites. Her description of her Turkish bath was, to say the least, explicit!

Having enjoyed the warmth of the water first, she then had to remove her bathers in front of the male attendant and was then doused in a bucket of ice cold water – a very invigorating experience! On April 10th we have a talk about The Jubilee Trust. With the weather hopefully improving, we look forward to picking up on our numbers. Pauline Harley

Leigh At our February meeting Annette Trapaud, the Fundraising Coordinator of The Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance, came and gave us a talk on the work of this amazing organization. It was fascinating to learn about the type of helicopter they fly, the Euro 135, the number of staff they need, the number of missions they carry out each year and something of the history of the organization. They have been operational since March 2000 and are based at Henstridge. They get no direct funding and have to rely on donations. Their main fund-raiser is their Monthly Lottery and we were all encouraged to join in with this but also to use their recycling banks – print cartridges, old mobile phones etc. Living in a rural area, as we do, we might well need (hopefully not) to use 60

the Air Ambulance at some point or know someone who will. We collected a sum of money during the evening to give to Annette and her talk certainly reinforced our opinion of it being a very worthwhile charity to support. At the beginning of March the WI held a very successful Jumble Sale and thanks to all those who donated clothes or came to support us. Our Annual General Meeting is on 24 April and our May talk will be on Cuba. Do come and join us. Anne Reason

Farewell The Hermitage and Hilfield W.I. is no more. The final meeting was held on 6 March, when W.I. representatives came from Shaftsbury to make the closure official. Thank you to all members past and present for all their contributions. Christine Dickerson

The Wriggle Valley Juniors ACT 2 The next few years - 2003 - 2006 After a very successful year in 2002 we had decided to again run throughout 2003. Another ambitious timetable was planned, still meeting on a fortnightly basis and to improve funding we invoiced members termly and charging £1 per session. Our main productions for 2003 were “Alice The Musical” which had eighteen brilliant songs and a witty script, which we performed in June, followed by a church performance of a Christmas Play “Stable Manners” in December. Both shows allowed us to make donations of £50 to the Leigh Brownies and £50 for the Yetminster Scout Group and also a £75 donation towards St Andrew’s Church, Yetminster. In 2004 we decided to change our meetings to weekly on Tuesday evenings at Yetminster Scout Hut and our main production was yet another witty musical about Robin Hood which was performed in June. Two donations of £75 were made to Leigh Brownie towards their camp and Yetminster Scout Group. After all the hard work the children came to a free BBQ where they were all rewarded with medals. This was followed by a Christmas show at Chetnole Church where the parents were able to get together for mince pies and mulled wine and the children received a gift each.

Stable Manners

we raised £60 for Biblelands, a Christian charity. In spring 2006 we made a decision to sponsor a village in Kotada, which is in India. The children wrote to the children and collected toys, which were transported by Clippers Teas. The village required a new community hall to hold events like marriages. We had decided on performing Cinderella with the profits going to the village’s fund and were able to send a cheque for £250. Not only did we do a full production in this year but we also managed to do a “Mother’s Day Show” to entertain the parents and get them involved in our drama games and also had an Indian Night where an employee from Clippers gave us all a talk about Kotada and an end of term BBQ where the children received medals. This year we have also introduced two cups to the proceedings – one for the juniors and one for the seniors for best improved for the year. At Christmas we decided that the children could write their own plays so we split the group into four and gave them a Christmas song each to sing and then they wrote a play around the title of their song. This was performed in front of family and friends in In 2005 we December and was followed by a Christmas performed a very ambitious play “Moving on” tea and the children all received a present which went well and in our Christmas nativity from the group. More next month. Caroline Hart wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 61

Hundred of Yetminster History Society On 14 March we had a very matter of fact talk on the Weymouth relief Road from Senior D.C.C. Archaeologist Steve Wallis. He spoke first of the difficulty of crossing the Ridgeway south of Dorchester and of the problems of the old road, clearly illustrated by maps, and then of the cooperation of Dorset County Council, Wessex Archaeology and the Oxford Archaeology group. The importance of Weymouth as a centre for Olympic sailing in 2012 encouraged action. The area was well known for its archaeological interest; archaeology was not deeply buried but heavy machinery was need to remove top soil, carefully supervised by archaeologists. Many prehistoric bones and skulls were found, the oldest, buried in foetal positions. There were also what appeared to be an execution site near an old 64

boundary, where bodies were thrown into a pit. The physiology of these showed they were Vikings from Scandinavia, tall and fit young men. A battle may have taken place miles away, the captives were treated brutally and there were many signs of struggle. Victims included at least one older man. As a result of this project barrows which could have been lost by ploughing or animal activity were saved and public interest was raised, especially locally. About 7000 people from Weymouth alone came to an exhibition and talks and others requested a repetition of these. Empty dug graves remain somewhat of a mystery and there are problems of space for storage and display. After this month field visits take place, please book. Shelagh Hill

Yetminster & Ryme Garden, Art and Craft Society How many people can resist a garden bargain? Especially at this time of year when we discerning gardeners are starting to long for those balmy summer evenings when we can sit out in our deck chairs with a glass of wine, captivated by the beauty around us which we have created by our own unique choice of planting! You will marvel at that new shrub, that tree cleverly placed to provide maximum shade, or those glorious summer bulbs at their peak. While you sip your wine, with your new gardening gloves and shoes thrown off and lying at your feet, and while your garden is refreshed by that clever watering system you thank heaven you had the wisdom and forethought to buy, your mind might return to an evening in March spent at Sherborne Castle Gardens, when, as a member of the Garden Society, you were able to indulge in buying whatever you wanted for the garden with your 25% discount card. How gratifying, you think to yourself! Summer Outings Now that Spring is here and everything is starting to brighten up, our Society has two glorious garden outings planned. In June we visit Mottisfont Abbey and its sublime and quintessentially English Rose Garden, planted in the eighteenth century from roses collected from Europe and beyond. This is followed later in the day by a trip to Spinners Garden and Nursery. These gardens are beautiful in their own right, and the nursery promises to sell you all those rare and unusual shrubs you can’t find anywhere else. In July, we head off to Devon to The Garden House at Buckland Monachorum. Described by the renowned gardener and presenter of the BBC for the Chelsea Flower Show, Rachel de Thame, as perhaps the most breathtaking of all gardens. Then in

the afternoon we leave for Buckland Abbey, the home of Sir Francis Drake. Two more tempting outings are hard to imagine. Information and booking arrangements for both these days have been given out to members at the last two meetings. Please remember that we need your completed forms handed back at the April meeting at the latest. If you have not received this information and wish to join us, please contact Jean Bridges on jeanheatherbridges@yahoo.co.uk . Yetminster Open Gardens The date is set for Sunday 1 July and so far we have about twelve participating gardens. All money raised will be donated to our two selected charities: Dorset Air Ambulance and St Margaret’s Hospice. If you would like to add your garden to those already included, please let me know (pandy.brown@btinternet.com ) – you don’t have to be a member of the Garden Society. Your garden doesn’t need to be big and it doesn’t need to be perfect. Maybe a bit of weeding beforehand and a cheerful face at the gate is all that is required. We want to make this a fun afternoon and an opportunity for garden lovers and neighbours to indulge themselves. Next meeting Gerald Fisher is coming to talk to us on 10 April about bees and bee keeping, an interesting diversion from the normal garden talk. Mr Fisher is the retired President of the Somerset Beekeepers Association. He has written a book on bee keeping and runs regular lectures and courses, so he knows his subject well. It should be an enjoyable and informative evening. Pandy Brown wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 67
