Editor’s notes We’ve had a lot of positive comments about the new layout of the magazine, although we appreciate the ‘News from the Villages’ section is taking a little getting used to without dedicated pages given to each village. The diary pages seem to be getting longer, which shows on how active our villages are. However, we will endeavour to make them easier to read. This is still, as they say, work in progress. There is a wealth of diverse events happening over the next few months; please look out for the adverts displayed under each of the village’s news so you don’t miss anything. We’d like to thank the people who expressed an interest in the Advertising Co-ordinator’s position and we hope to announce who will be joining the team in the next issue. The Batcombe Cream Teas will firmly take place on Sunday, 14th June at 3.00pm as usual at Court Farm. This annual event has been taking place, come wind, rain or shine, for the past twenty five years. It started with the Vardys at Church Farm Bungalow, then to Madge and Stella Newman at Harris Farm where scones etc were passed out through the window, and finally to Court Farm first with the Dowdalls and now the Hodges. So please come with friends and enjoy a super cream tea with other stalls and excitements thrown in. All in support of the Church of St Mary Magdalene. Hermitage Hoedown – 4th July As was announced in last month’s magazine, there will not be a Summer Ball in Hermitage this year. With the onset of better weather I guess we've all been encouraged to get out get some fresh air in the lungs and perhaps walk the 'Leigh Triangle' - passing enroute the 2 Leigh Tulips (there were 3 but one was beheaded)? Sadly when one does you can't help but see the rubbish/litter/ tin cans/ fag packets/bottles etc by the side of the road , in the hedges just casually thrown away. WHAT A SHAME! It was good to have so much space and the hall was actually warm when we went in and we didn’t have to keep our coats on for the first half an hour! We have been working on 2 badges, the first our Fire Safety Badge, and after doing our homework we visited Sherborne Fire Station where we were shown around the Station and all the equipment on the engines . For the past few years, at every bend along this route, there has always been a large number of Lambert & Butler cigarette packets, presumably thrown out of a car window as a matter of course. Although just as numerous, once again this year this was matched by a new entrant with Golden Virginia packets - both vying for the title of The Most Thoughtless Smoker in Leigh competition! The amount of soft drink tins, bottles and sweet wrappers, as well as sandwich and burger packaging, remained depressingly steady. 26 March - Most other areas were much clearer than other years. 28 March - Kevin Goodall reported that on their clean up from Three Gates to Totnell, they were disappointed to find that dog owners had cleared their dog mess up and placed it into plastic bags,

St Andrew’s Leigh Gift Day – 20th June Leigh is very fortunate to have two lovely community facilities; the New Village Hall and the Church; communities in every way are at the very heart of our village. We have all worked really hard in the last 4 years to raise funds, to work on both the inside and outside of the new hall and are now enjoying the rewards of our efforts. The church is a rather more historic building, and although sufficiently ancient we will not attract any grants. This year we have to repair the large stained glass East window behind the altar and also the smaller side South window in the chancel. They are both very draughty, so adding to the heating and candle costs, and are in danger of collapsing. The repair is specialist work and the cost will be about £4000 +VAT. To add to this, the cost of running the church is now in deficit – you can see this from last year’s accounts which have been in the porch for a few weeks and will remain so. The church made a loss of £32 every single week last year, and our contribution to the Diocese this year has increased by over £1000 to £14,446, so the weekly loss will be greater for 2009. We have a number of events planned: the May Fair on 16 May and the Coffee and Crafts Morning on 6 June, both advertised in the April magazine. To add to that, we are going to re-instate the Annual Gift Day - which was put on hold for the last 2 years to allow for the big push on village hall fund raising. Gift Day will be on midsummer weekend, Saturday 20 June followed by a festival evening Songs of Praise on Sunday 21 June. The church is open all the time but from 10 am to 4 pm on the Saturday Bishop George

will be there, with supplies of coffee/tea and biscuits so feel free to come and talk. Then on Sunday evening, a Songs of Praise to celebrate our friendly community will be at 6.30 pm followed by refreshments – outside, if we are lucky with the weather. You will be very welcome to come to either or both, you might even be surprised, and if you so feel you can make a gift (Gift Aided is always a plus!) at any time. Longbridge & Bolter’s Droves – update The future of the Longbridge and Bolter’s Droves in Leigh has been uncertain ever since they were designated Bye-ways Open to All Traffic (BOAT) in the 70’s when the implication of redesignating these leafy lanes was unknown. In the early years the impact on the soft clay soil by the use of 4x4 vehicles and trial bikes was less obvious. However, more recently, the Dorset County Council (DCC) allowed a group of volunteers representing FODROW to remove a number of trees and saplings to widen the droves and lay 10 tonnes of hard core to spread on the tracks – the DCC also provided almost 42 tonnes of hardcore (which disappeared into the soft clay almost immedi17

We hope that you will be very happy here. The bi-annual Village Meeting was well attended by 21 people. Our Community Officer, PC Moore, came to the meeting and reported that there had been only one theft of a trailer from Tim Roberts’ drive. He also stated that there were three vehicles that the police were interested in and if spotted should be reported to the police immediately. They included a silver Ford Focus Reg No NG 06 YFP and a white Ford Transit with a blue roof. PC Moore has now been trained in the use of the speed-gun and hopefully will be using it in Ryme in the early morning soon. Our District Councillor, Mrs Margaret Lawrence, also attended the meeting and gave an outline of the Council Tax rises

and where the money is being spent on more than 70 services. Ryme does not have a representative on the Parish Council at the moment where it should have three members. If anyone is willing to become a member please contact the parish clerk. There are ten meetings a year on the last Wednesday of the month. Church Warden’s Report It was reported that Bishop George Browning will be leaving the parish - probably in the autumn. It is hoped that he will be replaced without too long a gap. The church wardens asked for better support for the services held in the church and also for people to say if they wanted any changes in the services. Services held in the church were now down to two a month. They will be 8.00am and alternate months Matins or 9.45am. Frankham Farm Gardens The gardens will be open on Sunday 10th May and Sunday 14th June from 2.00pm to 5.00pm. The gardens consist of three acres of fantastic mixed gardens - something for every type of gardener and all for charity. Delicious home-made cakes and tea are available. Wheelchair access. Parish Council Meeting The meeting, held on 11 March, was attended by 7 councillors and 4 members of the public. As a result the meeting was short and to the point!. Council Membership - Mr Gary Sturgess of Hamlet was co-opted as a councillor. Planning - There were no contentious planning matters. Grants - It was resolved that as from 2010 up to £1000 a year would be made available to the Grants Committee. This money would come from the Council Reserves which currently stand at some £22,000. The grants committee would consider making grants from this money for the betterment of the people of Yetminster and Ryme. Lengthsman - The possible employment of a council lengthsman was discussed. Disabled Parking Bay - The council had no objection to a disabled parking bay outside the Health Centre for use by those visiting the Health Centre, Church and St Andrew’s Hall. David Gould Parish of Yetminster and Hilfield Bishop George Browning took the chair at a well attended and enjoyable general meeting of the church on Monday 23rd March in St Andrew's Hall. Valerie Rowsell, who has done the job so well for the last few years, was re-elected as Churchwarden and was joined by David Price. Although a comparative newcomer to the parish, David is a very experienced Churchwarden, having served in the English Church in Rome and at his former home in Essex. Barrie Smallcalder and Patrick Moule were re-elected as Treasurer and Secretary respectively. Marie Sutton, Frances Moule and Howard Jones retired as members of the PCC and were replaced 23

by Jane Robotham, Judy Pyke and Simon Eadon. Peggy Holland-Parfitt and Bill Shipman continue as members of the Deanery Synod. The PCC presented a comprehensive report on a full year of activity in the church, mostly very positive, with increasing membership and improved finance, and recorded thanks to the myriad people who do so much to 'keep the show on the road'. Bishop George reported on what he had done and how he saw the future. After the meeting there was an excellent party laid on by the Churchwardens. ‘TELL OUT, MY SOUL’ – Timothy DudleySmith visits Sherborne A couple of years ago in the Voices for Hospices event, at Leigh, we sang many of the hymns of this great modern writer, including the best known of all, one of the all time favourites, 'Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord', a versification of the Magnificat. We were to have been led by Bishop Timothy himself but he needed to be with his wife in her final illness and his place was taken by his son James, the Rector of Yeovil. Now Bishop Timothy, in his early eighties, is coming to Sherborne, to the Digby Memorial Church Hall in Digby Road, on Friday 15th May at 7.30 at the invitation of the Sherborne Abbey Faith and Arts Group. Anyone from the Wriggle Valley will be welcome – ring the Parish Office on 812452 (mornings) to book, £3 including refreshments. She has devoted her life to the nomadic people of the Afar region in the desert of northern Ethiopia. By living amongst them, she has for very many years been helping with their medical and educational needs and sharing in their nomadic way of life in that strife-ridden part of the world.

St Andrew’s (Wriggle Valley) Pre School St Andrew’s CE Primary School is entering the second year of school management of our own Wriggle Valley Pre School and the setting is going from strength to strength under the leadership of Mandy Vallender. As we begin the summer term 2009 numbers have risen dramatically and some sessions are closed to new pupils. Our rising 5’s programme is underway as the older children ready themselves for entry into their Reception year at school. Throughout the year the children have benefited from the excellent support of the Leader and her assistants Jo Redford and Jean House and also have enjoyed specialist music support from Alex Locke (Music Subject leader at St Andrew’s). Set within the grounds of St Andrew’s CE Primary School, Yetminster, the Pre School is currently housed in a well equipped ‘mobile’ building but plans are afoot to create, in the near future, a purpose built ‘Foundation Stage’ unit which will cater for the educational needs of those children aged two-and-half to five. Already, strong links have been forged between School and Pre School and weekly planning meetings between Mandy and Early Years’ coordinator Fiona Payne ensure a high degree of consistency and good practice. Since January 2009, ‘Topsy Turvey’ Mother and Toddlers’ group have also been based at the school and Mandy Vallender is looking forward to supporting their transition into Pre School over the coming months and years. We look forward to continuing to provide a high standard of ‘Pre School’ experience for local children from the age of two-and-a-half and to the further development of the facility over the coming years. Gardening Tips for May Hoe! Hoe! Hoe!! A busy month as growth momentum builds up and the hoe becomes your best friend to save hours of boring weeding later in the summer. Hopefully the following couple of items will also help you to enjoy your garden and its produce. More Flowers ……. Divide clumps of those perennials that you want to propagate, those that have become too big and those that perform disappointingly. Bulbs and rhizomes can be divided. Just make sure that the transplanted divisions have roots, shoots, and are given adequate water to settle into their new positions. Back to back garden forks are best to lever clumps apart. Cutting back clumps of spring-flowering perennials such as Pulmonaria can encourage a fresh flush of foliage, which is more attractive than old, mildew-covered stems. The plants will also remain more compact and flower better next year. Divide Primula (primroses) after flowering, planting them in a nursery bed until they are ready for planting out again in the autumn, for a display the following spring. Divide Hostas as they come into growth. Spreading and trailing plants such as the annual Lobularia (sweet alyssum), and the perennials Alyssum and Aubrieta, can become tatty and patchy. Trimming them back after flowering encourages fresh growth and new flowers. Deadhead Tulips and Daffodils. More Tomatoes…… Tomato plants produce their first flowers in May, but there can be problems in getting these earliest flowers to pollinate and, consequently, set fruit. Later trusses usually set without a problem, but the first ones can need a little help. This doesn’t mean you have to tend them with a fine brush, as the blossom will self-pollinate, but you may have to improve the general conditions. Mist plants overhead with a fine spray of water in the morning and again in the evening. This ensures the pollen is just slightly damp, rather than soaked, and most likely to set fruit. You don’t need to do this for second and subsequent trusses, but the first ones always benefit from a helping hand. Bishop George’s Message My Dear Friends, Confidence is everything! Watching a child learn to walk, ride a bike, or play a musical instrument we realise how fragile confidence can be, for one major stumble, accident or humiliation can reverse all progress made. The same applies to the elderly, confidence in one’s ability to cope, drive the car, cook ones meals, or simply leave the house, can be too easily and prematurely diminished. In the affairs of the globe, confidence in the economic system has taken a very heavy blow and desperately needs to be restored through wise counsel and strong leadership. We have recently celebrated the great festival of Easter. The events of that morning so long ago are as inexplicable as they were deemed to have been unlikely. What however is indisputable is the unshakeable confidence these and surrounding events gave to a very ordinary and small band of men and women who in an astonishingly short period of time were able to transform the hearts and minds of thousands until in 2009 there are now several billion followers of Jesus world wide. What was it of which they became so convinced? · They were convinced as Christians remain convinced today that the nature of God is revealed in the man from Galilee. · They were convinced as Christians remain convinced today

This year it was definitely one of our colder winter months. The most dramatic event was heavy snowfall on the 5th, which caused widespread disruption throughout the county. Bright days more than offset by cold nights Average maximum temperatures were 7% higher than usual, at 15.8C (60F). There were 17 nights with frost instead of the usual 9, and this was 5 more than the number in February. The coldest night was -6.7C (32F), well below the record for the previous month. Minimum temperatures averaged 0.2C (32F) instead of March’s usual 2.2C (36F). Because of the sunny days, the average temperature for March was deceptively close to normal, at 6.5C (44F) instead of 7C (45F). Very little rain Rain fell on only 9 days instead of the usual 14. Total rainfall was 22mm (1.2”), or 40% less than usual. Wriggle Valley Women’s Group In March we welcomed Jenny and David Peet who gave a most interesting talk about Mercy Ships. They showed slides and explained what happened when they visited the ship each year for a fortnight. Their son and family live permanently on the ship and the children go to the ships school. They are always looking for volunteers with different skills but anyone going has to pay their own way. In May we have had to make a change of date so we will be meeting at Goose Slade Farm, nr East Coker at 7.30pm on THURSDAY May 21st!! There will be a talk by the owner, Phil Dunning and the opportunity to look round the shop (and buy if you wish), followed by refreshments.

She shared her enthusiasm and knowledge with the members as she illustrated her trek across the hills and valleys of the central region of Western Bhutan – and discovered so many different forms of Aresaema and species of Primulas, Rhododendrons, Magnolias, Acers and Euphorbias. The vibrant colours of her slides made us all wish we could have joined her on this trip! Bhutan is a country about the size of Switzerland, bordered on the north and west by Tibet and in other directions by India – the state of Arunchal Pradesh in the east, Assam and West Bengal in the south - and Sikkim towards the west. 53

The friendliness of the people and the all-pervading calmness of their culture were apparent from the presentation. We learnt the history of the country and saw slides of several fortresses (ozong) and religious shrines (Chorton). (One should always walk in a clockwise direction around any chorton that one comes across. The ever-present prayer wheels are also turned in a clockwise direction). Rosemary shared the experiences of her 28 day trip in such an enthusiastic way that there may well be a great polishing of walking boots in Chetnole and Leigh in preparation to follow her footsteps through the hills and valleys of Bhutan! Mary Head Yetminster & Ryme Garden, Art & Craft Society Spring Show On Saturday 21st March the Bi-Annual Spring Show took place at St Andrewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hall, Yetminster. Entries of photographs, paintings, needlework and craft were of a good standard. The Art category definitely benefitted by being simplified to one adult class (+ novice class) as it enabled entrants to work in mixed media without, for instance, needing to worry about a picture being painted entirely in oil or entirely in watercolour. The tea and cakes were much enjoyed and thanks to all who helped and donated. Mrs Valerie Buckland was elected Chairman for a further year, Charlie Osmond was elected Vice Chairman, Paul Smith was elected as Treasurer and Alan Bastone was elected as Secretary. After the business part of the evening Mike Morrell gave a very interesting illustrated talk on the holiday trip he and his wife took to Oman. He said this large Arab country has been ruled by Sultan Qaboos who, in the last 40 years, has introduced a western way of life but without losing the Arab culture. Mike was 55

dressed in the traditional robe worn by many of the men in Oman called a Dishdash and wearing a very ornate round hat. Stanley Waterfall brought along his Dishdash complete with hat that he got when he visited Oman some years ago! Alan Bastone Hermitage & Hilfield WI Members enjoyed a very entertaining evening, provided by member, Christine Dickerson with a general knowledge and musical quiz. Joint winners, Margaret Murray and Jean Honse, with Maia Jones runner up. Christine judged the competition and Lorna and Sylviaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s entries were judged equal first. Election of officers for the coming year took place with Sylvia Coffin, President, Joyce Chutter, Vice President, Lorna Gassett, Secretary and Jean Honse, Treasurer. Lorna attended the Spring Council

April at Glanvilles Wootton Village Hall and the Group outing will be to the Blue Glass factory at Bristol. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month. Visitors are welcome. Sylvia Coffin Chetnole Chuckers Boules Club The boules season commenced in Chetnole on Sunday 5th April, with a BBQ of locally grown meats followed by social games. About 30 new and returning members enjoyed a sunny afternoon on the piste. The club will again compete in the Dorset League and match secretary Ian Wood has already circulated a 2009 fixture list. In addition to our own championship, Chuckers have been invited by organiser David Courage to participate in a knockout boules competition at Melbury Osmund, sponsored by The Rest and Welcome pub. The final will take place at
