Editor’s notes Welcome back after the break and I hope you’ve had an enjoyable and successful summer. We’d like to extend our apologies to the advertisers who were not featured in the last issue due to a lack of quality control by Creeds, the printers. I’d also like to mention that we do our best to place contributions where you’ve requested them to appear, but it‘s not always possible. Well there’s been a lot happening here at the magazine: we’ve changed to a local printing company called Remous and hope you like the new look and feel to the magazine; unfortunately due to Stanley Waterfall’s poor health we’ve had to reorganise the distribution of the magazines, which is now being managed by Stan Darley and Graham Plaice. As you know Stanley has played a pivotal role in the history of the WVM and will continue to act in an advisory capacity on the committee. We also have a vacancy for the advertising co-ordinator’s role. Advertising is our main source of income to enable us to provide a free magazine and we need someone to liaise with existing advertisers and deal with any new enquiries. Please contact either Graham Plaice, chairman, or myself if you would like to find out more. In the meantime we would like to extend our thanks to Rosie Cunningham for all her hard work and wish her our sincere good wishes in her new role as a school governor. Ginny Goodall, Leigh, starts the first in her series ‘Voices from the Vicarage’ where she gets to chat to the residents and relates their stories; I’m sure this will prove to be a very popular addition to the regular features. We’re also hoping to get some young people’s perspective on life in the villages. John Tatchell’s beautiful photo is the first to be featured in colour on the front cover – will yours be on the next? Keep sending them in. Carol Porter Readers are invited to make voluntary donations towards the cost of production. These should be forwarded to the treasurer at Mallows House, Church Street, Yetminster, DT9 6LG. Cheques can be made payable to Wriggle Valley Magazine. Thank you.

What a busy July we have had in Batcombe. Starting with the marriage on the 9th of Karen Beiling and Brad Mear and then on Sunday 11th the church was filled for Holy Communion and the baptism of Sarah and Charlie of Warden Hill Farm House, with the church filled with summer flowers - it was a joyful occasion. There was great excitement at the Friary with the wedding of Richard Thornbury and Chantal Meuller, the first time a wedding has taken place at the St Francis Friary and then to round off the weekend the baptism of little Uriel. Bridget & Derek's barn dance was a great success and many thanks to all who helped; £300 was made for church funds. Don't forget that the Harvest Festival will be at Batcombe Church at 11am on Sunday 12th September followed by a bring and share lunch . The Council have at long last informed us that they have the funds to replace the signs at the cross road and work should start soon, but don't hold your breath! Congratulations to Julie & Jonny Gibbs on the wedding of their daughter Emma to Tom Sheford at Piddlehinton Church on 7th August. Batcombe monthly coffee mornings will be 1st September at Warden Hill Farm House and in October it will be at David & Ivy Perry's home in Weymouth.

We begin on a sombre note, as two Chetnole residents have passed away since the last issue of the magazine. It is with great sadness that we learned of the death on 13th June of David Fogg, who had lived in Mill Lane for a relatively short time. We offer condolences to his partner Kathryn, with best wishes for her new life in Dartmouth. In early August, after a long illness, Paul Lovell died at his home at Little Kimble, Batcombe Road. We offer deepest sympathies to Linda Lovell and her family. A warm welcome to the recently arrived newcomers: In Mill Lane, Edwin and Anne Hirst moved into Gables, - Chris and Sharon Murphy and children moved into Wriggle Cottage – and further South along the village, Tony Jones & Jaqueline Boulter moved into Thurlands. We wish you happiness in Chetnole and encourage you to join in local activities. Please let me know if anyone has been overlooked. Wriggles Farm Shop Landlord Mike Lewin reports that Wriggles Farm Produce Shop should be open for business alongside the pub by the end of September. Progress has been delayed by unforeseen extra work, in converting the old skittle alley into “ a clean, fresh and exciting shopping opportunity”. 5
The ethos of Wriggles is “Support Local Producers, Serve Local People and help the Local Economy”. In the meantime, the pub team is to be congratulated for reaching the finals of Taste of Dorset Awards 2010. Watch this space….
Home Watch A mild ripple of concern went through the village on 8th August, as a tramp wandered about somewhat unsteadily at dusk, knocking on several doors to seek a handout. The late Bill Peach Some of you may be aware of our father Bill’s passing on the 10th June. Although residing for the last 18 years in Dorchester, Bill and his wife Maisie, following their marriage, lived in Chetnole for 38 years that left them with many fond memories, first at Rimpton Cottage & latterly Church Cottage. Bill was born 21st April 1925 at Melbury Osmond, and when Bill left school, he worked for Bradfords Coal Merchants at Yetminster prior to being called up to the Dorset Regiment in 1943. He saw action in the jungles of Malaya where his platoon was ambushed and he was wounded by a sniper and hospitalized in India. He rejoined his regiment and continued to Japan going to Hiroshima after the Atomic Bomb, and then Tokyo where he was a guard at the Emperor’s Palace. After demob he worked for Unigate Creameries in Yetminster as a foreman sniffer, - I wonder what some of the farmers thought! The firm became Unigate Foods Ltd on 1st April 1970 and in due time Bill went to work at Maiden Newton Creameries, and thence to Bookers Cash and Carry at Yeovil, where he retired 20 years ago. A great part of Bill’s life was very much centred on Chetnole and St.Peter’s Church. This included initially stoking the church fire, then ringing the bell for 8am communion, winding and maintaining the clock mechanism, clearing the churchyard and cutting the grass for a £5 note a year. He was also a member of the Parochial Church Council. Bill was passionate about his garden and still working in it the day he was taken ill. He had an operation, but sadly passed away two days later. His final resting place will be a return to Chetnole churchyard where his ashes will be interred Della and John Peach 8
63rd Chetnole Annual Flower Show and Fete While the judges were viewing the handicrafts, flowers and vegetables, the weather was showery but by the time show opened the clouds cleared. Treacle Eater Clog Dancers, Circus Performers, owls, alpacas, and lots of interesting sideshows, stalls and activities and delicious teas all contributed to making it a superb family afternoon. We are grateful to Mr and Mrs Tabor for the use of their field for the show, and to Mrs Sue Lloyd for graciously presenting the trophies. Thank you to all who made the effort to enter, and a big THANK YOU to everyone who helped to make this event such a success. Prizewinners (see photo) were:

The Chetnole Book Following publication of "Chetnole - A Brief History of a Dorset Village" in 2007, additional material has been obtained from several sources, including much from Australia, and a small supplement to the book is in course of preparation. If anyone in the village, not already in contact with us, has any extra items of interest to offer, would they please advise us now. If there is anywhere a photo of the Chetnole Home Guard, a very active organisation in World War II, it would be the greatest pleasure to see it. Paul & Annette Hallett Tel 872721

Songs of Praise – 1st August We had a full church for Songs of Praise at St. Mary’s on 1st August, taken by Michael Anderson, followed by a glass of Pimms. It was a lovely evening and seemed to be generally appreciated. The whole evening made approximately £300 for the church funds. Faith Hervey 11
Family Fun Event – 3rd July This did exactly what it said on the tin! There were lots of families with children and it was fun, plus it provided an opportunity for friends and neighbours to get-together and to ‘catch up’ with the news.
Families having fun
The weather was kind and we were able to enjoy all the activities on offer on the Green. Rounders and Tug-of-War proved very popular and, as seen from photograph, you didn’t have to be big and beefy to participate in the latter. Thanks go to everyone who help to make this a success – there are too many names to mention, and I would run the risk of forgetting someone if I tried to list them all! Christian Aid Hermitage raised £143.25 for our Christian Aid collection. A very big THANK YOU to all who contributed. The total raised in the Benefice was £1924.71 – a magnificent amount. Lin Allen
Bible Study each Wednesday A small group of Christians in Hermitage meet for a short Bible study, hymns and prayers each Wednesday at 8.30am. The meeting generally lasts for 35-45 minutes and the venue is Alan Ward’s home, Coasters Cottage in Gunville Lane. If anybody would like to join this informal group please ring me on 01963 210953. Lin Allen Golden Anniversary congratulations Two thousand & ten (2010) marks the ‘Golden Anniversary’ of one of Hermitage’s best known institutions – D J Chutter Ltd – General Building Contractors and bespoke Joinery business, making high quality joinery for the company and for other contractors. It was in May 1960, that David Chutter started the business – working on his own for the first year before taking on a labourer and a tradesman. During the 1970’s the company was invited to tender for larger contracts which meant taking on more employees. It withstood the depression of the late 1980’s, which resulted in the layoff of many employees, and it has now grown to having a workforce of 25 permanent staff plus sub-contractors. It also continues to offer three apprenticeships. It has contracts with Dorset County Council, WDDC and West Dorset Health Authority, as well as undertaking major renovation of listed buildings and new builds for private individuals. David is still involved with the business but his son Mark has taken over the main role, after joining the company in 1982.

News from the Old Vicarage. At the time of writing we are enjoying some beautiful summer weather. The rabbit hutch is in situ awaiting the arrival of our new additions and the gardening club has been busy transforming the little courtyard. We had an excellent day of memories back in June with four volunteers from the Gryphon school and we are looking forward to trips to Abbotsbury and Weymouth. Gilly Wilson is bringing her horse up for a visit and we are planning some fish and chip suppers through the summer months and of course we have the garden party to look forward to. Natalie’s baby is due on 8th September and she will be away on maternity leave until next year. We wish her all the very best and we hope she will be popping in to see us with her new baby throughout the coming months. Jan Milward

Charity work in Brazil May I say a big thank you to everyone who came to support the evening at Leigh Village Hall on our work in Brazil. The turn out exceeded expectations and it was a privilege to be able to share my understanding of Brazilian society and especially of the plight of the homeless and victims of domestic violence. Thank you for your generosity and encouragement. On behalf of everyone at Encontro com Deus in Curitiba, Southern Brazil Patrick Reason St Andrew's Church, Leigh As some of you are aware changes have been made in the scheduling of the services for St Andrew's and throughout the Benefice and unfortunately the August schedule was not very clear, so apologies to anyone who turned up for a service which did not exist! A new schedule is coming into effect from October but I wanted to point out that the Family Service in Leigh will be on the 3rd Sunday of the month in September (19th), so as not to clash with the Commissioning Service for the new Headmaster of St Andrew's School in Yetminster on September 12th at 10am. It would be good for those who have connections with the school to be there to support Mr Paul Miller who is taking over the headship in September.

Leigh Parish Plan 2011 The Working Party received over a hundred suggestions for inclusion in the Parish Plan revision that takes effect from 2011. Many could be grouped into key wishes for the village, or areas of concern. As a result, we are now in a position to proceed to the next public meeting: we propose to hold this in Leigh Village Hall Screenbites starting at 7.30pm on Tuesday 7th Will be on Saturday 9th October at September. 7pm. a wish to evolve to meet the changing needs of the village. The most popular suggestions covered road safety, better broadband, better transport, the availability of appropriate housing for all ages, keeping the older members of the community independent for as long as possible, looking after our roads and footpaths and how our local government works. Co-operating with neighbouring villages was a common thread within many of the topics. All but one of the inputs was constructive and forward looking, wanting Leigh to continue as a good place to live. The meeting should be full of interest and discussion. We plan to move to a draft Plan Revision in November, and to put the final Revised Parish Plan before the Parish Council in January for their approval, so this is a good time to come along to have your say as to what the Leigh Parish Council should be doing over the next five years. We hope that as many as possible from Leigh will attend to have their say, and there will be the usual tea, coffee, soft drinks and wine available from 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start. The Plan Revision is not a secret, so those interested from neighbouring villages are welcome! Leigh 5th Food Festival and Classic Car Display It seems amazing that this was the 5th time we have all met for the Food Festival. This year was very successful, and the sun shone – at least 900 people attended, and we made £3,207.06 which is an increase of £1,374.36 – amazing. Mat Folas made a very flattering and apt speech, and talked to various stallholders. There was a wonderful selection of Classic Cars – about 45 came and as usual a great variety for the aficionados to salivate over. Michael Michaud from Peppers by Post gave colourful cookery demonstrations, The Wednesday Club entertained the children, and Kate Turnbull (daughter-in-law!) demonstrated her talent of face painting. The Yetminster Irish Dancers performed beautifully – what a great day. A huge thank you to everyone who helped with car parking and other duties, AND the sign maker (my husband)!!! Noone in the area could escape. I have also had great support from the Fudges, and all the stallholders remain remarkably loyal, for which I am extremely grateful. Ryme Intrinseca Village News A big welcome to Christian and Gerry Stanley who have moved into ‘Brockbury’. Also congratulations to them on the birth of their first child, a daughter, Lucy born soon after their move. Christian, already a doctor, is training to be a GP. Gerry was also in the medical profession but at present has her hands full with Lucy. Their hobbies include cycling and walking. Our thoughts are with the Lill family after the death of Vanessa’s mother Sheila who had been very ill for a long time. gplaice@gmail.com Yetminster & Ryme Intrinseca Parish Council Summary of COUNCIL MEETING 23rd June 2010 The meeting was attended by nine councillors, three members of the public, CCllr Bevan, and the Clerk. Finance The Council agreed the 2009/10 accounts and annual audit statement. The Council agreed to provide a £10,000 loan to the Sports Club to be used towards the cost of the planned extension of the Club building. The loan will be repaid over three years and the Club agreed to provide four guarantors who will cover the loan if the Club defaults The following grants for 2010/11 were agreed: Yetminster Fair Association - cost of insurance £400 Yetminster Sports Club - cost of grass cutting £450 St Hippolytus Church - churchyard maintenance £200 St Andrew’s Church - churchyard maintenance £700 Air Ambulance £100 Citizen’s Advice Bureau £100 Planning Network rail have agreed to paint the new communications mast - to be sited 100metres north of the Mill Lane crossing - matt green/brown to make it less conspicuous. Possible Affordable Housing The Council has received an objection to the possibility of an Affordable Housing Development on land west of the Thorn-
ford Road and north of Coles Lane. Please note that in law neither the Council nor any councillors may comment one way or the other on a possible planning application. The same is true of District and County Councillors. Comment can only be made after the application has been received. Individual residents may of course object/comment at any time. Additional Points from July Meeting County Council Cuts County Cllr Bevan reported that the first tranche of cuts by the County Council will be £30 million (10%) with the possibility of a further £10 million. This will be painful!! Loan to Sports Club The Council agreed that the draft agreement produced by the Sports Club was unsatisfactory. In view of the time scale, and the fact that there is no council meeting in August, a sub committee was authorised to agree a satisfactory loan agreement for the Clerk’s signature. Children’s Playground Quotes for the repainting and repair of the equipment are being sought. Grit Bins Two sites (near the Post Office and at the top of Mill Lane) for grit bins have been agreed with the District Council who will keep them stocked. Yetminster Film Nights Thursday 16th September “It’s Complicated” 15 - Romantic Comedy – starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin & Steve Martin. Meeting up again at their son’s graduation, Jane and Jake find themselves oddly attracted to each other after ten years of divorce and embark on an affair, clandestine because Jake is remarried to a younger wife and Jane’s eye has been caught by the romantically-minded architect who is remodelling her house. Thursday 21st October “From Time to Time” PG/12A – Historical Thriller. Written and directed by Julian Fellowes. Starring Maggie Smith, Timothy Spall, Alex Etel, Pauline Collins, Harriet Walter, Hugh Bonneville and Dominic West. In times of war two centuries apart, two distinct worlds are linked by a single family and the house in which they live. It is 1944 and thirteen year-old Tolly Oldknow is sent to spend Christmas with his grandmother, whilst his mother searches for news of his father in wartime London. In the old house, he becomes a witness to events during the Napoleonic wars and finds himself slowly drawn into participating in the drama. Invisible to most people in the past, yet able to move amongst them, he begins to unravel the mystery which has bewildered his family for two centuries. The
solution to the puzzle leads him into his greatest adventure yet… Thursday 18th November “Letters to Juliet” PG – Romantic Comedy – starring Vanessa Redgrave and Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!) Sophie, on a visit to Verona, goes to the house allegedly inhabited by Shakespeare’s Juliet. She learns that for years lovelorn women have been posting letters to Juliet, asking for advice in matters of the heart. Sophie finds a 50-yearold letter written by a young English girl about a Tuscan boy she loved and lost. She gets in touch with the writer, Claire. Claire and her grandson Christopher arrive in Verona and all three set off on a search for the long-lost Lorenzo. All of this is wrapped up in unimaginably beautiful shots of the Italian countryside. Tickets will again be £5 to include a choc ice and will be on sale at Oak House Stores two weeks before each showing. Although tickets will be available on the door, it is most appreciated if they can be bought in advance so that seating can be sorted out reasonably accurately and enough wine and choc ices be brought to the Hall. Doors will open at 7pm (not before as Moviola need the time to set up) and films begin at 7.30pm. Look forward to seeing you there. Sue Eadon Quiz Night Thank you to all those who attended and supported the Yetminster Fair Association Quiz Night. The event was an unqualified success and a very enjoyable evening. Please note your diaries for next year’s event which will take place on Friday 10 June 2011. 23

Help for Heroes The members of the Royal Naval Association, Sherborne Branch, would like to thank most warmly everybody who, in so many ways, supported the Garden Open at Bembury Farm on 25th July in aid of Help for Heroes. It was a wonderful afternoon with lovely fine weather and, due to the great generosity of so many, both on the day and before, the Branch is delighted to have been able to send £2,136.14 to Help for Heroes. Leaders & Helpers needed We have had a hugely successful couple of years for the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts; as naturally happens, there is due to be some movement amongst leaders, some moving to different groups and some stepping down after a period of very hard work and sterling service to the group and Scouting. We are therefore approaching a shortage in leaders and helpers; Cubs will be particularly affected. If there is anyone out there who would be interested in committing to regular volunteering to ensure the continuation of the group, please let me know. You may be interested but have reservations; I am most happy to discuss them with you and think of any way you can be supported to assist with the running of the group. We need more help to step forward, otherwise we will be in serious difficulties after Christmas. We are a happy, sociable group of adult volunteers and would welcome any newcomers to our fold. Here’s hoping!!!!! Bev Taylor -Wade Group Scout Leader, Yetminster, 01935 873144 / 07796184111
SOS From Your Local Filling Station Bridge Garage, Leigh, To enable us to keep the petrol service going, we ask that you use us on a regular basis. We know you find us useful for your mower petrol or if you have run low on fuel and we do appreciate that you need to take advantage of the lower prices offered in town, which we are unable to compete with. However, it is costly to provide the service and we need to cover our expenses. Therefore, it would help us greatly if more people regularly bought just £10 or £20 worth, which would only be around 70p - £1.40 more than in town. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our regular, long standing customers for supporting us which is very much appreciated. Regards Brenda & Steve Addison Boyles Educational Foundation The Governors would like to receive application for grants from those living in Yetminster, Leigh and Chetnole who will be attending further education or taking up apprenticeships in September 2010. The grant can go towards the costs of purchasing course books and other items needed to assist with further education. In the case of apprenticeships we can assist with cost of tools etc. We are also able to give assistance to youth groups in the area. Please apply in the first instance to Mrs M Read, Bound Lane Farm, Leigh, Sherborne, DT9 6JA Alan Hill 32
The Wednesday Club Thank you to all those who came and supported us at our Open Day on June 30th. The Rev’d Choi from the Methodist Church came to speak to us and he gave out Bibles to our four leavers, Kim Barfoot, Aimee Lauren Gillman, Katy Barton and Annie Brignall who are all off to The Gryphon School this coming September. We also said goodbye to Stephen Williams who has been a faithful supporter of The Wednesday Club and we look forward to working with the new Headmaster, Paul Miller, from September onwards. I am so grateful to all those teachers and helpers who give of their time and I would love to hear from anyone who would like to join the team. It is a great privilege to be involved with the children and to share our Christian faith with them. If you feel you could help in any way, please contact me on 01935 873726. Anne Reason
day was bright and sunny so we could spread ourselves out into the garden. It was wonderful to see so many people supporting the event and the “Bring and Buy” table was heaving with things to purchase. However we all obviously had had enough of courgettes and marrows as these were the most difficult items to sell and we ended up donating some to The Old Vicarage. Thanks to all of those who ran stalls, raffles and dashed around with tea, coffee and biscuits, but most of all our thanks go to Liz & Julian Turnbull for hosting the event at their house. From the money raised we hope to be successful in our bid for the Beer Mill Mead conservation area this year. Many thanks. Kevin Waterfall

Calling All Teenage Actors And Musicians.... Are you a teenager who needs an outlet for your talents? Some of the former members of The Junior Wriggle Valley Players (now at secondary school) have said they'd love the opportunity to perform again; so we are hoping to put on a production of Romeo & Juliet at the beginning of December. However we need more people to make up a full cast. So we are looking for young actors, musicians, artists or technicians who would like to work with us on a new version of the great play - a bit of Glee fused with a hint of Bollywood. Don't worry if you want to be in the Wriggle Valley panto as well - our rehearsals will be on Sunday afternoons so you could do both (if you have enough energy!). Our first meeting will be at Yetminster Scout Hut on Sunday 12th September 5.00 - 7.00pm. Come along to find out more - everyone welcome. If you'd like more information please call Sylvie (01935 873707) or Caroline (01935 872471).
ping session on June 20th was especially notable for the almost total lack of moths and the frost we found on our tents when we got up! The moth trapping session we held at Lankham Bottom near Cattistock at the beginning of July was on a much warmer night – we recorded an amazing 122 species of moths – at least 30 people including several families helped to analyse the traps. Alners Gorse and Lankham Bottom are always open to the public so please feel free to visit at any time – and let us know what you see there! A date for your diary: CONSERVATION ACTION DAY AT ALNERS GORSE Sunday September 19th 10am – 4pm Carrying on with our woodland and scrub management work - and if the ground is firm enough and the weather suitable, we will be planking some of the larger trees we have felled and building nest boxes and bat boxes. Yetminster Irish Dancers The school holiday is a time when we look back on the successes of last year and forward to an interesting future: the annual concert in the Octagon, this time with the Irish comedian Jimmy Cricket, who is so kind and talks willingly with the youngsters; the springtime display when we fill The Digby Hall so friends and family can praise the progress that the dancers have made; the trip to The Atlantic Hotel, Newport, South Wales to entertain at a corporate function; No win, no fee!; the overnight stay in Wimborne for the Folk Festival with hundreds of dancers dancing in the street, and then back home to Yetminster for the Fair.
Most of you will know that we do a 30min show at The White Hart, but this year we followed it with different performance in the church, which generated an entirely different atmosphere. I think it’s wonderful to see the church in this mood and hope more of you will join us next year. This is also the time that age and further education makes us lose some familiar faces, the juniors become seniors, and vacancies become available for new members. It would be nice if some came from this immediate area. If you are interested please contact me, Sharon Sandom, 10, Gainsborough Drive, Sherborne, Tel 01935 815572

Welcome back and Artsmark Gold Welcome back to one and all, especially to the new little ones in our reception year, Acorn Class and to our new Headteacher, Paul Miller. Paul brings with him a real passion and enthusiasm for education that will continue to motivate and inspire both pupils and staff in the school. We welcome him to the St Andrew's community and to Dorset as he and his family have re-located from Lancashire. We also wish our Willow Class leavers the very best as they move up to the Gryphon and other schools and Steve Williams as he embarks on his retirement from being our headteacher. We're delighted to announce that after many years of hard work and our commitment to the teaching of the arts, we have achieved Arts Mark Gold status, prestigious recognition from the Arts Council England in recognition of the school’s commitment to, and excellence in, arts education; nearly 20% of our day is spent using the arts to enhance and enrich our children’s learning. Paul Miller, Head teacher of St Andrew’s Primary C.E. Primary School, Yetminster, said: “I’m delighted that the Arts Council has recognised St Andrew’s dynamic and outstanding arts education programme in Art, Music, Drama and Dance. Our children enjoy and excel in these subjects and all have the opportunity to participate, exhibit and perform, often sowing the seeds of a lifelong passion. We find the arts stimulate creativity and imagination in our children by providing visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to our world. Living in rural Dorset is an inspiring environment; we have been able to use it as an outdoor classroom. St Andrew’s children are lucky to have taken part in a melange of arts activities, visual, dramatic, musical and digital. We are also very fortunate to have very talented and creative arts teachers on our staff which enhance and enrich our children’s learning and experience of school life. If there is anyone in the community who feel they could make a contribution, feel free to contact us! September …. the tail end of summer or the beginning of autumn? A time to enjoy the late summer garden and the continuing pleasure of harvesting your own homegrown produce; and to begin thinking about tidying the garden for the approaching winter as well as planning for 2011. Lots to do this month - including the following ……… · Divide herbaceous perennials. Lift and divide any plants that are too large – prise the plants apart with two forks, then chop into sections with a spade. Replant healthy pieces that have good roots and leaves, firm them in and water well. Particularly good for crocosmia and many clump forming Alpines. · Dig up remaining potatoes before slug damage spoils them. Store sound ones carefuly. Discard others. · Net ponds before leaf fall gets underway · Take cuttings this month from: lavender, penstemons, heather, fuchsias, hydrangeas, rose, clematis, buddleia, alpines, ceanothus and bedding geraniums. To take cuttings pull off side shoots with heels, remove the lower leaves and then place in compost. · Cut back flowers of Hydrangeas to a healthy pair of leaves · Prune back rampant climbers and clear away annuals that have finished flowering Look out for black spot on roses – dark spots with yellow edges or dark blotches. Pick off any affected leaves and collect those that have fallen onto the ground. Throw away or burn the leaves to prevent the disease spreading. · Bring inside any tender perennials, such as Fuchsia, Gazania, Lantana and Abutilon, before frosts cause damage. · Wait for the first frosts to hit dahlias and cannas before lifting the tubers or rhizomes. If you decide to leave them in the ground, cover the crowns with a protective layer of straw or bracken. · Mow less frequently, and raise the height of cut as the growth rate of the grass slows down. This will help the lawn to withstand the last of the warmer, drier weather, and also keep it resistant to treading as the wetter weather arrives. · Continue to sow vegetables for overwintering, to mature next spring: turnip, spinach, winter lettuce, Oriental vegetables and seed of overwintering onions, both salad and bulb types. · Plant overwintering onion sets in late September. · There's not a great deal to sow now but, surprisingly, it's the right time to sow winter lettuces such as Arctic King for spring harvests. · If you have fruit trees then now is the time to put a grease band around them to stop pests from crawling up and destroying the fruit. Remove apples, pears and plums affected with brown rot to prevent the disease from spreading DON’T FORGET TO USE A CIRCUIT BREAKER (RCD) WHEN USING MOWERS AND OTHER OUTDOOR ELECTRIC POWER TOOLS. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY! Tom Withycombe 40

Lammastide Lammas Day itself is celebrated on the first day of August and corresponds to the ancient Hebrew Feast of Weeks, when a sheaf from the first cut of the barley harvest was offered to God. The word ‘Lammas’ first appears in the writings of King Alfred and is thought to be derived from an English word for ‘loaf’ followed by ‘mass’. In the early English church it was customary to consecrate bread made from the first ripe corn of the year in order to celebrate the beginning of harvest time. On the 1st of August, Lammastide was celebrated in St Peter’s Church, Chetnole as part of the Prayer and Praise service. That service therefore marks the beginning of the harvest season which will continue throughout August, September and early October, when the root crops, including potatoes are finally harvested from the fields. In all of our villages across the Wriggle Valley benefice, Harvest Thanksgiving services are celebrated in September and October, whilst in August, flower and vegetable shows are mounted in Chetnole, Leigh and Yetminster. All of these wonderful activities and services are planned with one thought in mind. They are designed to celebrate the wonderful fertile soil of the Wriggle Valley, the enormous range of fruits, flowers, vegetables and grain which grow in profusion across the valley, culminating of course in a thanksgiving to God for his goodness to us. The time honoured words from the 26th Chapter of the Book of Deuteronomy written many hundreds of years ago, still hold good, namely, “You shall take a basket containing the first
fruits of the earth, take it to the priest in the House of God and set it down before the altar of the Lord.” Harvesting is now under way. We must never ever forget that the partnership between God, who provides the natural resources and the farmers and gardeners who till and husband the ground is a finely balanced one. The phrase ‘balance of nature’ is often used to describe this partnership. Sadly, in many parts of the world man has been foolish enough to ignore the balance of nature, the result being that fertile acres are turned into arid land and deserts emerge where once crops grew. As the food is harvested in the Wriggle Valley over the next few weeks, may we remember all those who work on the land and also give thanks to God in our Harvest Services for his munificence. We have indeed much to be thankful for. Prebendary John Parfitt Taize Service Sunday 26th September at 6.30pm in the Methodist Church Yetminster "God Provides" Yetminster Methodist Church Yetminster Methodist Church will recommence the Fellowship Studies which are held on the first Tuesday of every month and are open to everyone. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 7th September at 2.30pm at The Meadens, Clovermead, Yetminster. Refreshments will be served and we hope to see you there. 42

June-July 2010 "Weather means more when you have a garden. There's nothing like listening to a shower and thinking how it is soaking in around your green beans." - Muriel Spark. After an unusually fine spring, the summer got off to a good start in June. As the main holiday season approached July failed to maintain such a high standard for sunshine but it did offset the rain shortfall that was stopping the beans (and, more importantly to some, their lawns) from growing. Temperatures The average maximum temperature in June was 10% higher than usual, at 23.5 C (74 F). The hottest day saw 29.2 C (85 F), and the coldest night almost dropped to freezing point instead of the more normal 3.7 C (39 F). Rainfall Rain seldom fell in June. There were 22 rain-free days but, when it did rain, the showers were heavy, giving us 25% more rain than usual - 55 mm instead of our average 44 mm (1.8". July was even wetter, and 40% above average, with 63 mm (2.5") instead of 45 mm (1.8"). Total rainfall for the year so far is now only 2% below normal, with 431 mm (17"). Sunshine There were only 3 days without measurable sunshine during the 2 months. June was the sunniest month recorded during 2000-2010. With 209 sunshine hours it was 37% above average. June fell back to only 116 hours, 18% less than usual, but the 2010 total so far is still 17% above average. Winds 2010 is proving exceptionally gale-free but July did provide one gust of 45 mph – well above the month’s usual peak speed of 32 mph.

VOICES FROM “THE VICARAGE” Bet And Reg Coffin
Bet & Reg Coffin have rooms next to each other and share a lovely garden room, where I sat with them to listen to their memories. Bet’s story - “I was born 1924 on a farm at Bailey Ridge. My maiden name was Joliffe. My father and grandfather were both farmers; I was brought up doing all the jobs a farmer’s daughter was expected to do, and I loved it. I went to the local school in Leigh and Mum took me on the back of her bicycle. My mother worked extremely hard; she cooked for my grandfather and father at lunchtime and then again for us children after school; we always had a good meal. I liked my teachers, they were fair and kind but you knew where you were with them and you didn’t play up tho’ sometimes I would get into trouble for playing in the boys’ playground. I left school at 14 and started work on the farm which is all I ever wanted to do. At that age I was given full charge of a tractor and shown how to drive it. At 15 I drove the farm’s lorry. I never took a driving test but I drove all over. I was the eldest of 3 and on Tuesday evenings we all had to sit and darn our socks and do mending. I hated it but you just had to do it without moaning. There was an Army camp just up the road from us and every evening during the War servicemen would come down and sit with us around the fire and mum would cook them a bit of supper. Summertime they would come and help us make the hay. We were teenagers during the War and we’d sit and watch at twilight as the bombers left England to bomb Dresden, we would wave to them but I don’t know whether they saw us or not. They would come back at ten o’clock and we would try to count them. Sometimes, for a holiday, mum would send me to stay with my grandmother who lived in Leigh. There were cousins of my age who would come too. I think it was really to give my mum a rest. My parents are buried in the Leigh churchyard.

I met Reg at a village dance and we got married in Leigh church. We had three children. Reg’s dad owned a 40 acre farm and when he retired we took over as tenants.” Reg was born in 1921 and his father was the blacksmith at Holwell. He was very proud that one of his uncles had built and run the first car in Dorset. Reg said “I used to have to do some jobs before school and when I heard the school bell ringing I used to start running across the fields and got there just as the bell stopped. I really think they kept ringing it until I arrived as they knew my dad needed my help. I left school when I was 14. My dad worked with a local carpenter to make wheels for gun carriages. He and mother would carry the iron band to fit the wheel. It was very hard work, especially for my mother. My father was Methodist and my grandfather was a preacher.” Bet told me something of the families who lived in Leigh when she was a teenager. “There was a family in the village and the mother was a drunk. That little girl was always to be found sitting outside the pub on the cold step, Winter or Summer and her mother wouldn’t come out until 10 o’clock it didn’t matter what the weather was doing, she had to sit there and wait for her mother.” Thankfully this kind of thing was very rare. Wriggle Valley Players News Calling all Thespians….. The Players are about to launch rehearsals for the next pantomime to be performed in Leigh in January and early February 2011. Everyone in the Valley will remember the success of “Viva Boudicca”, our last venture, earlier this year and so again, by popular request, we have a brand new original script crafted here in the Wriggle Valley for us by Phil Tebbatt. Should you wish to be involved in the performance come along to the read through on Tuesday 14th September in Leigh Village Hall at 7.30pm when we will read through the play and discuss arrangements with all who want to participate in any way at all. This year the play is based on a local smuggling theme and is called “Pirates of Wessex, or, The Curse of the Turtle’s Head”. Hope we will be able to see you there at the read through. Auditions will take place on Monday 20th September and rehearsals which will mostly be based in Leigh will regularly be on a Monday, though extra rehearsals will be needed closer to the time. Should you be interested in joining the society or helping in any way, costume, stage crew etc why not come along and get to know us. We are a very friendly local group who take a great deal of enjoyment from the productions we mount. Apologies are due to those looking forward to the performance of “The Monkey’s Paw” but personal difficulties led to us being unable to perform it during the summer. Perhaps we will be able to resurrect the show for Halloween.
Looking forward to seeing you at the read through on the 14th Jim Aldhouse, Chair Wriggle Valley Players The Leigh Discussion Club In July members & friends enjoyed a coach trip to Symonds Yat in the Wye Valley - every seat was taken on Colin Powell' s coach and we could have taken more if seats had been available. When we arrived we were given coffee and biscuits, then some of us walked down to the river and those unable to walk went by car to the river for a 45 minute trip and then back to the hotel for a meal. We then had a look around the village which 100 years ago would have been a busy industrial area. We were tired but happy when we set off for home after enjoying a memorable day. Alan Bastone Hon Sec Tuesday Club Our July talk entitled “Cape Town to Victoria Falls” might have led some to think we were in for another session on the humiliation of the British Football team, but fortunately we were treated instead to a beautifully illustrated account by Christine Shaw of her 3,500 mile Safari through seven countries of Southern Africa. This was no Safari staying in posh hotels but camping close up to all the wildlife. Even before leaving Cape Town there was plenty to see with the unusual spectacle of Jackass Penguins making good use of the suburban swimming pools. From there onwards the creatures seen became increasingly exciting and included lions 56
and lionesses, leopards, wildebeest, elephants, giraffe, zebra, hippo and springbok. Christine also enjoyed seeing some marvellous cave paintings but the highlight of the trip was a helicopter flight over the Victoria Falls. This gave a splendid view of them in all their glory! As usual we have an interesting programme of talks for the Autumn before our usual Christmas festivities, so do come and join us for a stimulating and social afternoon; details are in the calendar section of the magazine. to plants by their botanical names in that language, causing brow furrows to deepen and eyebrows to rise quizzically. Apart from recommending plants which can be grown successfully in deep shade in soil types relevant to various parts of Dorset, occasionally including the Wriggle Valley, the address also included detailed information on how to actually introduce shade in an existing shade free garden. This included the planting of hedges, shrubs and trees under which plants such as Hederas (Ivies) and Dicentra Spectabilis (Bleeding Heart) could be planted with an assurance of success. The next evening of the Garden Club will be of a totally different nature! It will take place at 7.30pm on Monday, 6th September in the village hall in Chetnole when the speaker will be the very popular TV personality Paul Atterbury of Antiques Roadshow renown. Mr Atterbury will speak on “The Making of a Dorset Garden”. This event is sure to be very popular so be certain not to arrive late! Those who attended Paul’s last talk to the Club in January 2008 will need no reminding of how enjoyable it was. Non members and prospective new members are welcome. Tom Withycombe
Leigh WI There was a very successful outing to Poole in June when it appears that a good time was had by all who went! The speaker for our July meeting was Mr Bob Hall with his "Confessions of a Rural Meter Man". He had been a meter man for 24 years in West Dorset and regaled us with lots of funny stories, including several doggie incidents. Our meeting on 28th September is the WI committee supper for all members. The next Branch meeting will be on 11th October with the Hilfield & Hermitage WI and the subject would be "The Story of Tea". The Singles Championship is well underway. There were 18 entrants divided for the first round into three groups of six players. The eight men and four ladies with the highest scores in the group matches then compete to determine the Ladies’ and Men’s champion for the year. Sixteen sets of partners initially entered the Pairs Knockout Competition, held for the first time this season, and at the time of writing, the competition is in the semi-finals stage, to be completed by the end of August. We look forward to the Inter-village competition on Saturday 11 September at 6.00pm, where dress with a French flavour is strongly encouraged - this should be an entertaining evening! Ian Wood
Hermitage and Hilfield WI For our August outing we visited Brotherwood Conversions at Beer Hackett. We were welcomed by Sue Goldsworthy who had kindly laid on Pimms and nibbles. We were shown around by John Daniels and Paul Barber who explained the company's operation of converting vehicles to carry wheelchairs. We saw the various vehicles in different stages of conversion and were very impressed by the large and modern factory. We all enjoyed a most interesting and informative evening. Liz Cozens
Illustrated Talk – 7th September The Hermitage and Hilfield WI will be hosting an illustrated talk on ‘Canals and Waterways of Dorset and Somerset’, starting at 7.30 pm in Hermitage village hall. Admission is £1 and there will also be a Raffle. All are welcome (including men)
