Wriggle Valley Magazine November 2010

Editor’s notes As many of you will know by now Stanley Waterfall died on Friday 8th October. Stanley was one of the founding fathers of this publication and until his recent illness was an active member on the committee, ensuring the efficient distribution of the magazine to all the villages. Others will no doubt write at length about his many skills and attributes but for those of us connected with magazine we have lost a true champion and dear friend. Our sincere condolences go to Ella and the family at this sad time. Our cover photo this month reflects the fact that November is the time for the official remembrance of all those who have fallen in the service of this country. The photo is of the Somme battlefield as it looks today and proves just how prescient John Masefields words were when in 1917 he wrote: “When the trenches are filled in, and the plough has gone over them, the ground will not long keep the look of war. One summer with its flowers will cover most of the ruin that man can make, and then these places will be hard indeed to trace, even with maps.”

proposed, but no agreement was ever reached. Some years passed and it was feared the village would not have a War Memorial. The Methodist congregation therefore decided to install this beautiful marble plaque to honour the memory of those servicemen who gave their lives in the 1914-18 War. For many years, the Methodist chapel became the venue for Remembrance Services with the Royal British Legion etc. It continued to be so until numbers wishing to attend exceeded the 80-seat capacity of the Chapel. Village Remembrance Services are now held at St. Andrew's Church, where a brass Memorial Plaque has been A cyclist on the recent Dorset installed. John Nile Historic Churches event noticed the 1914-18 War Memorial Plaque on the East Wall inside the Methodist Chapel. This resulted in a representative from the Imperial War Museum coming to learn about its existence and to have it officially recorded on the U.K. Inventory of War Memorials. The location - inside the chapel - is unusual. It is understood that when a village War Memorial to the 23 men who fell was being planned, agreement on its location proved difficult. The churchyard, the Green and inside the Parish Church were all

News from the Villages BATCOMBE..... Local representative: Alan Bastone (01300) 341351 Alan@FlowersFarmlakes.co.uk

Looking down the valley, Batcombe is looking fine with a smart new thatch on Church Farm House and the autumn colours just coming to their best; a place of which to be proud. We welcome Paul & Carol Attwell and their sons, Adam, Charlie and Henry soon to be living at Court Farm Buildings, Great Head Lane. We wish to thank John Griffin for trimming the church boundary hedges. Lillian Newman and family and Madge wish to thank everyone for the cards and messages of sympathy since Lisle’s death; they are very much appreciated The November monthly coffee morning will be on Wednesday 3rd at Church Farm House, Batcombe.

and a well known to many in Chetnole for his active role in the local community. Stanley will be sadly missed. Good news - by the time you read this, We offer a warm welcome to the village, Wriggles, the new local produce shop, (see to the new occupants of Meadow View, separate feature on p13) should be up and Steve and Tina Dorran. running alongside the Chetnole Inn.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Terry Freeguard of Chubbs Farm Cottage, who was admitted to the ICU at Southampton Hospital on 9th October, after sustaining very serious injuries in a fall. Anyone wishing to contact Terry should contact Trudy James on 872977. We join family and friends in Leigh, in mourning the passing of Stanley Waterfall MBE, a founder member of this magazine

More good news – arrangements are being made for a weekly Outreach Post Office service to operate from Chetnole Village Hall, following a recent inspection. No firm start date can be established however, until a telephone line has been installed and a local, qualified person found. Any volunteers? It seems we will have to wait until after New Year for any further progress. (cont’d over the page) 7

Recent fouling of The Wriggle by an accidental slurry spillage, made front page headlines in the local press. The Environmental Agency assured concerned residents that it will monitor the rate of recovery of river life and condition of the water, which has gradually become clearer.

sending a cheque for £240 – Well done Ladies!!! The very popular Chetnole Curry Lunch takes place this November (see ad p7 for more details). This event sells out quickly, so book early to avoid disappointment. Many thanks! Gordon Ratcliffe

Every resident should have received a copy of the Parish Plan, attractively presented and entitled appropriately “Looking Forward”. The Parish Plan Steering Committee members are to be commended for their completion of two years hard work. No doubt there will soon be a call for volunteers to implement the various tasks listed in the Action Plan - don’t be shy dear readers! The WCML (Wednesday Coffee Mornings Ladies) send a big “Thank You” to everyone who supported the Macmillan “World’s Biggest Coffee Morning” held in the village hall on September 22nd resulting in

My sincere thanks to all loyal supporters who sponsored me for the annual “Dorset Historic Churches” cycle ride in September. I failed to beat last year’s record of 46 churches, having chosen a hillier, more scenic route. However sixty-five miles and 38 churches later, I raised £200 plus around £50 from Gift Aid. Half of the money collected goes to St. Peter's, and half to historic churches across Dorset. It's a great way to see some of the county's remote churches and byways AND get some healthy exercise. We need more cyclists next year - come on you Chetnole couch potatoes! John Fripp

Farewell to the Houses Stockwood Parish Council parish council debates and Thanks to Gerald Potts for reporting that John and Sandra House moved out of the Parish at the end of September, after many years of farming up at Manor Farm, and will be much missed. In paying tribute to their contribution to the local community, Gerald reminds us that John served on the Parish Council and succeeded Bu Tabor as Chairman and being succeeded himself by Mark Gallimore. Mark said " I initially encountered John House at my first Chetnole & 8

meeting in 2002, when he was the chairman of the council. He carried out this leadership role with enthusiasm and skill and provided essential local knowledge especially about parish history. As well as being the Chairman he played the important role of unofficially representing the farming side of the parish. I have always felt it is important to have the views of the farming community heard at such a forum and John's extensive farming knowledge often proved invaluable during

discussions. “ Gerald also remembers the contribution made by Sandra as “Keeper of that dear little church at Stockwood”, not to forget John’s leading role / life and soul of the party in The Wriggle Valley Players over the years. Their many friends in the Parish thank both of them for the all time and effort that they have put into the community over the years and wish them the best of luck in this next chapter of their lives.

St. Peter’s Church, Chetnole The Harvest Festival service on October 10th was taken by Yetminster Guides and John Reynolds. The collection for the charity "Send a Cow" amounted to £217. Harvest Lunch followed in the Village Hall. This was a happy occasion with young and old in attendance and the chance to meet some newcomers to the village. A big “thank you” to all who helped in any way. The lunch raised £270.71 for St. Peter's. Ann Flew

Churchyard Gateway New Overthrow Archway and Lantern. In the early 1940's, the original archway was removed, possibly as part of the wartime scrap metal drive. Following protracted paperwork, permission was finally granted to allow its replacement. As the new lantern is battery powered it will be lit on a 'as required' basis. On Monday 20th September, a large group of Chetnolians gathered at the gate to take part in the dedication of the new archway in memory of Anthony (Tony) Cooper. The dedication was conducted by Rev Simon Brignall with prayers and a most appropriate reading from Psalm 24. The next major undertaking will be the repair/refurbishment of the churchyard wall - watch this space!

Mrs Gerish’s Rear Window 70 people were entertained at Chetnole Village Hall on the 7th October when the Artsreach season opened with the Ministry of Entertainment presenting their new extravaganza "Mrs Gerrish's Rear Window". It was the usual mix of comedy/drama interspersed with songs from the 70s/80s. Everyone left with a smile anyway! The next performance will be on Thursday 9th December, when Devil's Violin present "The Singing Bones". Sounds a bit odd I know - but Devil's Violin have enthralled audiences from Cornwall to Northumbria with their Unique blend of thrilling music and storytelling that becomes very atmospheric even spooky. Tickets will be available from mid-November from John Head 01935 873555. Hope to see you there. CHETNOLE VILLAGE HALL ArtsReach Presents... Devil's Violin present "The Singing Bones"

Chetnole Chuckers Boules Club The boules season is coming to a close, as the nights draw in, but we shall continue to boule on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons, as long as the weather permits. The annual match between the Chuckers and the Leighers was held on the last Monday morning of September. By adopting the tactic of playing as long as possible, before having to stop for a pub lunch, Chuckers won a closely fought match and retained the trophy. On a sunny afternoon on 10th October, two of the three club championship finals were played to the delight of a large crowd of spectators, resulting in the crowning of two new champions: in the Men’s Singles, John Head beat Ian Sinnott 2-1 and in the Ladies Singles Janet Ratcliffe beat Connie Wallis 2-0. Well done Janet and John! The final of the Mixed couples has still to be played.

New Arrival We welcome Peter Sharland to Gunville Cottage. Peter has moved from Yetminster, with two friendly Jack Russells named Hardy and Tich. Quiz Night – 20th November

I am delighted to say that all of the available tables have been reserved for the Quiz. If you would like to compete but have not yet registered, please call me and I will put you on a ‘waiting list’, so that if any of those who have registered advise me that they cannot attend you can take their place. Thank you. Just to remind you that the proceedings will start at 7:30 p.m. Alan Ward Ray Dickerson

A ‘Diamond’ Couple Many congratulations go to Alan and Honor Ward who recently had their Diamond (60 years!) wedding anniversary. Sadly, they could not celebrate this as Honor is in a dementia nursing home, but their two daughters Kristina and Sheena and their two sons James (from South Africa) and Thomas (from Norwich) visited their parents. Honor and Alan bought Coasters Cottage in 1954; they were working in the Gold Coast (now Ghana) when

expatriates were called ‘old coasters’. Both were teaching physics, maths and engineering, and continued to do so until recently. They returned in 1985 from Africa to their many friends in Hermitage, and joined in fully with St. Mary’s church and with the Methodist chapel in Yetminster. In 1997 they bought a little batteryelectric car; this was white and cubical, and friends nicknamed it ‘Sugar Lump’. They drove this for 40,000 miles. This was changed to a black Ford Fiesta, still battery-electric, which has so far given them 32,000 miles of pleasure. They also made a battery-electric ride-on tractor, and the photograph shows Honor on it. Honor was a keen gardener, Alan is not, so to make use of their long back garden he has installed a GSHP (Ground Source Heat Pump). So far he is pleased with it, but the winter will tell!

Xmas Bingo – 4th December A reminder that the next Bingo evening will be a special Xmas session to be held on Saturday 4th December in the Village Hall starting at 7:30 pm. So, put ‘Strictly’ onto “record” (that way you can skip over the boring bits, like the practice sessions and the judges comments) and come and join friends and neighbours for a bit of fun and a chance to win some great prizes.

Hermitage & Hilfield Village Hall Committee Following the recent Annual General Meeting the committee has a new chairman, Sue Bosanquet. Sue replaces Jeremy Cozens, who has stepped down from the position that he has held for 8 years, and from the committee that he has served on since 1993. Sue spoke for the whole committee, and for many in the village, when she said that

we owed a big debt of gratitude to Jeremy for all that he had done as Chairman and in his previous roles on the committee. Dave Whiteoak of Hilfield was elected as a committee member at the AGM.

Bingo – 9th October The Bingo and Raffle prizes were (fairly) evenly divided across the players at the latest Bingo session which was, as usual, an enjoyable evening. Thanks go to Charlie Osmond for his role as the Caller, and to Sue Bosanquet and Barbara Atyeo for organizing the event.

New Year Party 22nd January A date for your diary – the Hermitage and Hilfield New Year Party will be held on Saturday 22nd. January starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Village Hall. More information will follow in future WRIGGLE Valley Mag. and posters on the village notice boards.

HILFIED..... Local representative: Michael & Ann Harris (01300) 341148

There on the hill sits our beautiful little church, spring cleaned and decorated with greenery, flowers and produce, ready for our harvest festival service. The weather was bright and sunny with a fine view to be seen from the doors The church was filled to the brim and more people outside. 18

A lovely service and hymns was taken by Rev'd Simon Brignall. Thank you goes to Sally Vickery and Monica Hambidge for decorating the church and for all the produce kindly given. Tea was to follow at Mr & Mrs Algar's at Church Farm, Thank you for their hospitality. It was also lovely to see the residents from

Hilfield Friary. Thank you to all those that attended this service. Our next service will be on the 23rd December for Carols by Candlelight, time to be comfirmed and we look forward to seeing you all then. Anne Harris

LEIGH..... Local representative: Anne & David Reason 873726 dareaon@btinternet.com

October brought another new family to Leigh – so a warm welcome to Jan and Alan Abraham who have moved into Brambles in Back Drove. We wish you well. Sadly, very sadly, the village lost probably its best known ‘inmate’ – Stanley Waterfall MBE, one half of Stan and Ella. He died quietly and peacefully on 9th October in The Old Vicarage – a place to which he

and Ella spent many many hours playing Scrabble, being Father Christmas, wearing his ‘silly’ hats, raising funds for TOVIC and many other charities. I am sure that many, fuller tributes will be paid to Stanley in the December edition – as this edition is about to go to press, it was too important not to mention. Goodbye old friend. David Reason

News from the Old Vicarage. Some late summer sunshine set the scene for a trip to West Bay back in September, where fish and chips were enjoyed by all. October brought a very welcome visit by Sharon and her wonderful owls. We are looking forward to a shopping trip to Street and a visit by Border fashions. November is already looking very busy; our Christmas fair is on Saturday November 6th at 11am. We will be raising funds for breast cancer research and have many stalls booked in. Please do come along and support us! We are also very much looking forward to a visit

by some miniature ponies and have a pub lunch trip in the pipe line. We will be celebrating the engagements of five members of staff on November 23rd, with a celebration of marriage.

We will have a parade of wedding dresses, music, champagne and cake! We hope to include photographs from some of our residents and staff members. Any gifts for our raffle would be much appreciated.

CHRISTMAS FAIR!

The Old Vicarage, Leigh. Saturday November 6th 11am. Fudges biscuits, plants, gifts, cards, Jolin Gallery, jams, raffle. £1 entrance to include refreshments. Lots of bargains! All welcome!

RYME INTRINSECA..... Local representative: Gilly Wilson 8732982

The church looked beautiful for the harvest service on Sep 22nd and even better for being full of people with the singing greatly swelled by the St Andrews singers who kindly gave up their time to come. This was followed by a very jolly meal at Church Farm afterwards when the Bishop of Sherborne could really meet everybody. It is very sad news to hear of the death of Ian Hoare on the 6th Oct after only a short spell in hospital; he had been ill for some time. Our thoughts and prayers are with Caroline at this time. Village Meeting: Please make a note in your diaries of the bi-annual village meeting in the church on Tues 16th Nov at 7pm.

All are welcome to come and voice their opinions on any village concern or just have a chat! Candle Lit Carol Service: This joyous occasion will be on Sunday the 19th Dec at 6.30pm followed by mince pies and mulled wine in the Post House with Gloria Abbey. Gilly Wilson We raised £200 by sponsoring Liz Ashmead (with Penny the horse) and her daughter, Annabel Tottenham and Nick Follett on cycles. Many thanks to them and to other generous sponsors. One half of the above sum (£100) will come back to Rhyme church. Many thanks Stuart Grant

DORSET HISTORIC CHURCH TRUST RIDE + STRIDE 2010 It always takes time to get all the returns in but it looks as though in Yetminster we have raised a splendid sum of £902. The doughty cyclists were the Barfoot family, the Gostick family (whose seven-year-old was going strong when the rest were flagging), the Brignall family, John Ferreter, Nick and Clare McLeod-Ash, and Patrick Moule, while the walkers were a group led by David Fogden, Brian Rowsell and George Sutton. This is a splendid achievement and if it has been equalled throughout the County we may even, in this 21st year of the event in Dorset, have brought the grand total over the years to £750,000. This has enabled the Trust to make hundreds of grants and to encourage very many churches of all denominations to get to grips with the task of keeping their lovely churches in good order, proclaiming their faith as they have done for so many years. Well-maintained, smiling churches speak of a faith which welcomes everyone dilapidated ones give exactly the opposite message! Patrick Moule

Yetminster Film Nights Thursday 18th November “Letters to Juliet” PG – Romantic Comedy – starring Vanessa Redgrave and Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!) Sophie, on a visit to Verona, goes to the house allegedly inhabited by Shakespeare’s Juliet. She learns that for years lovelorn women have been posting letters to Juliet, asking for advice in matters of the heart. Sophie finds a 50-year-old letter written by a young English girl about a Tuscan boy she loved and lost. She gets in touch with the writer, Claire. Claire and her grandson arrive in Verona and all three set off on a search for the long-lost Lorenzo. Tickets will be £5 to include a choc ice and will be on sale at Oak House Stores two weeks before each showing. Although tickets will be available on the door, it is most appreciated if they can be bought in advance so that seating can be sorted out reasonably accurately and enough wine and choc ices be brought to the Hall. Doors will open at 7pm (not before as Moviola need the time to set up) and films begin at 7.30pm. Look forward to seeing you there. 25

Gardening hilst I am not an advocate of unnecessary digging – seldom needed in raised beds - heavy and medium soil should have manure dug in now, leaving the surface rough for the frost to break down; lighter soils can wait for spring manuring. Now is the time to give regularly waterlogged ground some drainage treatment. This can be done in various ways: either dig gravel into the soil have bloomed. Carnations and pinks that or, in extreme cases, lay land drains were layered can now be potted up and towards a soakaway. placed safe from winter’s winds. Dahlias that have flowered should be dug up and stored, whilst young ones should be potted up and kept dry throughout the winter. You will probably need some reserve pansies in the spring, so thin out seedlings and pot up those removed. Peonies can be propagated by taking part of the root.

Cuttings

Flowers Surplus manure or compost should be spread over the empty flower beds (if leaf mould is not available) and the soil dug over. Herbaceous borders should be forked over and plants cut down after they 36

It is the time to review which perennial plants are becoming old and will need replacing soon. Having made your selections, take your cuttings. Planting Final plantings of snemone tubers, Canterbury bells, pansies, primroses, sweet William, violets and wallflowers should be made. Irises should be planted in groups of three in a feature position. Roses should be planted and any prunings taken, heeled into the ground in a sheltered position; no point in discarding them when they may strike and give you more plants.

Wriggle Valley Magazine November 2010

Seeds to Sow now: Hollyhocks thinned. Plant garlic and overwintering outdoors; sweet peas in frost free onions (Senshyu Yellow, Red Baron or conditions for an early show. Radar) and shallotts (Eschalote Grise, or Jermor). Seeds To Sow now: broadbeans (Aquadulce claudia), peas (Pilot, Meteor, Feltham First).

Fruit This is the month to plant fruit trees. Currant and gooseberry bushes too. Figs will need thinning. Spread some manure between the rows of new strawberry plants.

Trees and Shrubs There’s still time to plant flowering shrubs and trees for next season. Let exercise generate some warmth in November’s Potting now: Shrubs such as azaleas and cold and enjoy yourself - and look forward deutzias. Bulbs for Spring flowering to the rewards of your labours in 2011! including astilbes, dicentras and lily of the valley should be potted up.

Vegetables Get the soil ready for spring sowing. Those energetic souls who want to keep warm should get the hoe going in between the growing crops. Collect vegetable refuse and burn or compost it – don’t let it rot beside the plants. The last of the beetroot and carrots should be lifted and prepared for the freezer. Celery and leeks need earthing up. Parsnips may need covering. Spinach will continue to crop as it is 37

News from the Churches St Andrew’s Church, Yetminster A season for everything. As the years pass the act of Remembrance on November 11th grows in significance for our nation. I have seen the numbers growing over the past few years just at a time when living memories begin to pass into history and we lose those who fought in the great conflicts of the last century. Maybe it is because our forces are once again actively engaged in defending our freedoms and the younger generation realise once again the price that must be paid to protect us all from tyranny. We salute those who so bravely put themselves in the firing line for us, and think of the young men and women who never lived to see our day. I have just completed reading the monumental account of the Normandy landings by Anthony Beevor. He reminds us that it was a citizen army that fought their way through the deadly hedgerows of Normandy. They were often outgunned and outfought by the hardened Nazi troops and the losses suffered by both sides of the conflict were equal to the losses on the bloody eastern front. A terrible price too was paid by the civilian population of France who endured bombing and brutal reprisals by the occupying forces. It is well to remember the price paid for our freedoms and to give thanks for the sacrifice of so many. It is well to move on too, not to forget but to heal. The writer of Ecclesiastes who penned those famous words...‘there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven’ goes to say ‘a time to kill and a time to heal’ I often pause in front of a small oak tree planted in the grounds of Hilfield Friary by 38

St Andrew’s Church, Yetminster German volunteers who came to Britain after the war. The tree reminds us of John’s vision of heaven in which there was a tree planted by the river of life ‘and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations’ . The volunteers still come each year as part of a programme organised by the German government. Today they form part of a larger international community working with the Franciscan brothers in the ‘Hilfield Peace and Environment programme’. They remind us that healing and reconciliation is possible as we unite around a common cause, that of caring for the earth. Our post war leaders were visionaries, they understood that the real war we must fight is the war against want and disease. Their vision helped to build the prosperity of Europe today and brought independence for many new nations. In our generation we still need vision as we struggle to ensure that peace and prosperity are shared with all and not bought at a terrible price for our earth and its people. Yetminster Methodist Church "You don’t have to go to church

to be a Christian" Often one hears this point of view, based on the accepted fact that there are more good people in our communities than the one in ten found attending Sunday worship in our churches. Wondering what Jesus' thoughts were on this subject, I remembered the story of Jesus at the home of Simon [Luke Chapter 7] and the woman who came to Jesus there. Simon, the Pharisee, was an authority on religious customs and practices. He knew about the importance of keeping the Sabbath and other ritual practices. The woman was almost certainly a prostitute, and not considered worthy of being in such company - indeed, she had need of forgiveness for her sinful life. Jesus uses a parable to get his message across to

YETMINSTER METHODIST CHURCH

YETMINSTER METHODIST CHURCH

AUTUMN FAYRE

Simon, "..... if a large debt was cancelled ..... which was the greatest?". Then, straight to the point, he says to Simon "You INVITED ME TO YOUR HOME, YOU DIDN'T PROVIDE WATER TO WASH MY FEET ..... etc." "But this woman washed my feet with her tears. YOU DIDN'T PROVIDE A TOWEL ..... this woman wiped my feet with her hair. Her LOVE has saved her." The moral of this story is for us all. Church-going has its important place in the Christian faith we profess, BUT without LOVE it is meaningless. As we attend church, re-charge our Christian batteries, and be supportive to other like-minded folk, we must live out the LOVE for others that is so fundamental to being a Christian, out of church! So maybe "you don't have to go to church to be a Christian", but I find it helps me! John Nile

Leigh Weather Watch September “Summer pleasures they are all gone like visions every one And the cloudy days of autumn and of winter cometh on.” John Clare 1743-1864. The poet was rather pessimistic about September and we didn’t do too badly for sunshine and cloud-free days, despite having one of the earliest frosts of the past 10 years. Even so, the nights are drawing in at a rapidly increasing rate, and we haven’t yet had the annual chore of remembering to put all our clocks, watches and video recorders back an hour. Temperatures Our summer was concentrated in earlier months this year. August was the coolest since our records began in 1995 and the average temperature in September was only 13.6 C (56 F), or 6% below normal. The only previous years with below zero temperatures before October were 2003 and 2005. This year the first autumn frost was on September 25, with -1.4 C (29F). Maximum

temperatures were 6% below normal but minimum temperatures fell even more sharply, being 15% down. Many tender plants must have been taken unawares. Rainfall August restored greenness to the fields and September kept up the good work. There was 25% more rain than usual, but it was concentrated in fewer days than usual. Sunshine There was only one day without any sunshine but the month as a whole was very slightly duller than the average. Even so, 2010 has now had 1073 hours of sunshine, making it 8% sunnier than the average year. Winds September maintained 2010’s tendency to be calmer than usual and the peak wind speed was only 28mph. No sign of autumnal gales and devastation - yet!

SPOTLIGHT on our community Alan Bastone Born in 1927 in London, Alan was a sickly child and at five was sent to a nursing home in Worthing which he remembers to be ‘more like a prison than a place to get well’ and being shut in a dark cupboard for not sitting still in bed! Alan then went to live with his Grandmother in Hertfordshire where she taught him to read and write before, aged ten, he finally joined school, cycling ten miles each day. When war broke out, Alan was recruited as a messenger boy for the Home Guard and spent many nights cycling around in the dark, worrying his mother sick. Alan’s school days were short lived for at 13 his school was bombed and he found himself a job as an office boy in London earning 16 shillings a week (80p). Later, working on a poultry farm, Alan kept his own hens and pigs earning extra money by rotavating gardens. After 16 years he had saved the princely sum of £2300, which enabled him to take on a Council Farm in Hertfordshire. Alan bought three Guernsey cows for £100, plus a calf, and in 1958 moved into the four room house along with parents, Doris and Edwin, brother, John and grandmother Lucy. Initially the house was without electricity or hot water and only

a pail in the outbuildings for the loo; Alan had to milk his cows in a loose box with a portable milking machine and when he filled a ten gallon churn on the first day he thought he was going to make a fortune! Alan bought Flowers Farm, Hilfield, in 1968 and moved in with 50 cows and 20 followers; his parents and, brother joining him in 1974. He established his popular fishing lakes in 1977 (the first being dug as a reservoir in 1976 due to a shortage of water which was, and continues to be, supplied by the Friary). In 1988 ill health forced Alan to give up farming but not his involvement in the community which has always been extensive including being: Chairman of High Stoy Parish Council (36yrs); Chairman of Hermitage Village Hall committee (16ys); Secretary of the Dorset Ponds & Lakes Society (17yrs); Secretary of Sherborne Farmhouse Discussion Club (16yrs); Secretary to Flowers Farm Fly Fishers Club (since 1977); Secretary to Leigh Discussion club (since 1984). Despite ill health Alan and Pam Vardy continue to take care of each other at Flowers Farm, remaining active and very popular members of the community. Kerry Straughan 51

Club News Chetnole & Leigh Garden Club The AGM of the Club took place at Chetnole Village Hall on Monday 4th October and was attended by 43 of the membership eager to hear the annual reports and what awaits them in the coming year. Rosemary Burden remains as Chair of the Club as she enters her third and final year of her tenure of this position. Ken Madgwick has retired after eight years sterling service as Treasurer, with that portfolio being picked up by Michelle Aldhouse. Mary Head, who, for the past four years, has arranged the annual programme of speakers and events so splendidly, has retired to the back benches of the Committee, watching the activity to replace her with great interest. The post remains unfilled at present although a packed programme for the coming year is already in place, thanks to Mary. The membership can look forward, with anticipation, to interesting and entertaining presentations on subjects ranging from Pruning to Compost via the Flora and Fauna of South Africa’s Western Cape, growing Clematis, Japanese Gardens, Herbal Habitats for Wildlife and much more with, of course, an array of social activities and trips.

The members were reminded of the opportunity to borrow various items of equipment from the Club’s inventory: these include a long handled pruner, a Henchman platform, a lawn scarifier and a gazebo. Due to ongoing pressure on the finances, largely because of the increasing cost and expenses of speakers, the annual membership of the Club will be raised to £10 per person with effect from the start of the new season on 1st November 2010. The shock of this news was mitigated by the copious amount of beautiful complimentary food and wine offered with the Committee’s usual largesse! The first event of the Club’s new year is a direct reaction to a number of requests from the membership for advice and information on pruning. Therefore, at 7.30 on November 1st at Chetnole Village Hall, an expert, Robert Allwood, has been booked to give an overview of this complex subject. Mr. Allwood has spent his working life immersed in horticulture, has managed his family’s nursery and also ran the Plantsmen’s Garden Centre for Scott’s Nursery in Merriott, Somerset. He is indeed an expert on his subject and his presentation is much anticipated. As at most of the Garden Club’s events, guests and visitors are very welcome. Tom Withycombe

Leigh & District Discussion Club The first of our winter meetings was held on 5th October at Leigh Village Hall. A talk was given by Mr Abrahams, head gardener of Minterne Magna Estate. Born in Buckinghamshire, he was never very keen on school, but loved the great outdoors. So much so that someone left him a garden in their will, for which he lovingly cared for 20 years. Moving on to be head gardener at Windsor, he introduced the Foxtail Lily which was very fashionable in the 70’s. The Queen was most fond of this lily and they were often used to decorate state banquets etc. His next move was to the Savill Gardens, again as head gardener. From Windsor he started his own business in Derby as a landscape gardener, which he continued to do for 15 years. Deciding to have a break from work, he then travelled the world for 2 years; destinations being San Francisco in the States, New Zealand and Australia where

he saw some wonderful crystal caves. On returning home he got a job at Stean Park Garden for 2 years and from there to Minterne Magna Estate, where he has been working ever since. One of the jobs here was to renovate the rhododendrons and on doing so he found a very rare one. Also a ‘Living Fossil’ was discovered, much to everyone’s surprise and pleasure. Hopefully he will stay at Minterne to continue his marvellous work. He was thanked by the Chairman, Charlie Osmond. After tea during business the following dates were given out: On Friday 19th November we are holding our Annual Dinner at Leigh Village Hall, 7.30pm. Anyone interested, please contact Alan Bastone on 01300 341351. All welcome and please bring your friends. Next meeting 2nd November at 7.30pm, a talk by Dr Townsend on “A visit to Cambodia. INTER VILLAGE INTER VILLAGE COMPETITION 2010 COMPETITION 2010 Dear Readers, Players, Captains and Observers, The Yetminster Boulers really enter into the spirit of the competition. Two years ago they arrived as typical froggies with berets and onions, last year as lookie likey Maigrets and this year as immaculate French waiters. Unfortunately there were only two of them. Come on Yetminster! You can do better than that. The event was well advertised in the WVM and there were plenty of children playing rounders at the same time. The Tennis was unfortunately missing a number of matches due to holidays and rain. Therefore I am considering stretching the competition over the year.
